Roch Kubatko on the Orioles trade with the Blue Jays

this close to the trade deadline, three hours between games, something was probably going to go down. We didn’t know that it would be quite a local trade for trade here as we’ve got our own Rock Kubaka with us now to break this one down. And uh Rock, it’s one of the relievers again. I appreciate it being between games, the double header. I kind of slotted nicely, but you know, I’ve been saying and other people know it, the bullpen’s been kind of the hot spot when it comes to this trade deadline. We could talk about Mullins, no Hearn and Lauriana, whoever, but really it’s the relievers first. We figured they were going to attract a lot of interest. I don’t know who had Sir Anthony Dominguez being third in their pool, but you know, Brian Baker first. That might have been a bit of a surprise. And Gregory Soda, but Dominguez, there was enough interest there. They were going to make a move. This is a two-month rental. This is life of a seller. And he was a high leverage reliever with some closing experience. And without Fus Batista, now his value increased. But again, this team is is moving players right now. And his season really turned around with the incorporation of that splitter around May. Remember, he had the terrible spring training, but it was one of those veterans saying, “I’m working on things.” And it’s kind of a slow start at the beginning of the season. He was working on things. And 1.14 RA once he started using that splitter. Uh, so he has been a valuable guy for them. And Tony Manelino, hey, welcome to the world of managing when it is a sellers. You’re going to have to figure things out with a bullpen. We’ve now lost Baker and Sodto and now Dominguez who really was a good acquisition for them from the Phillies for Austin Hayes and you know the short walk down the hallway that was super convenient for him. Yeah, it doesn’t get much uh I don’t know if better is the right word but easier at least does fit it. Now something that was actually talked about during game one is the fact Chad Green another rough outing against the Orioles. He’s their other corresponding move. he gets DFAD. But you have two guy well yeah two guys who are going to just be walking from one clubhouse to another because the return for the Orioles is also playing an Orioles affiliate. So you’ve got Geron Watts Brown who’s in double A and New Hampshire the Fisherats are currently playing Chesapeake who is now his new team. Is this the first time that’s ever happened? I I I feel like especially for a minor leager and a big leager trade, you know, they’re not going one for one up top, right? I remember Bud Norris going down the hall with the Astros in that trade. I don’t believe that was between games, but double header. They have the minor league. I’m going to call stats research because they can check anything and it kind of makes me wonder. But look, this is a good armed 23-year-old. He was their number 10 prospect. Pipeline already has him number eight with the Orioles. So, I feel like that’s a pretty good return. He’s a starter. And stop me if you’ve heard this one. The Orioles get a guy with big strikeout numbers who has some command issues which can raise his walk totals. They feel like they can work with him. This is right in their wheelhouse. This kid again, former third round pick, Oklahoma State, a transfer from Long Beach State. Uh, you know, 40 career starts, 246 strikeouts in 192 innings. This is a strikeout guy. And again, you said he’s at New Hampshire. He was in Class A Vancouver before that. I got my cheat sheet. 62 strikeouts in 37 and a third innings. This is an arm that they want to be able to work with here. And you know, you notice now this these prospect lists are starting to have more pitchers than they did before with the Orioles. It was very prospect position player heavy. They’re getting more pitchers. You can get a starter who’s your number eight prospect for a two-month rental and a guy again they feel like they can work with or they can keep the strikeouts going 60 slider fast ball low 90s. Maybe they can get it to go up a tick or two in exchange for again a two-month rental to get an arm like this. I feel like they have to look at that as a win. That’s why they pulled the trigger. I’m sure there were other offers out there. They’re very happy to get this kid. Yeah. And there was that focus on maybe it’s time to start getting some pitching prospects externally and being able to have them where they’re kind of already half molded, but you can continue to now make your impression for what you want them to look like as a big leager. Now, you just said this, you’re still waiting on other guys. There’s starters, there’s position players who could still be on the table here. Charlie Morton was very candid with you guys. He had those big hugs after his start. That’s not usually for him. Um, if you were looking at most probable to be the next off the board and you just said it, Sir Anthony was not your take for the third. Um, what’s kind of the target right now is we’re going to be under hugatch again tonight. Yeah, I thought he was going to go higher than third. That’s what I surprised me. But, uh, I think Morton is a good call. You know, Zack Efflin obviously struggling some, but again, this is a starter with a track record. So I feel like either one of those guys, there’s Ryan O’Harn, Cedric Mutton’s boy, he certainly knows how to turn it on for scouts here that are watching. There’s a possibility there. Raone Lauraniano, the decision there is if you know you feel like you are going to contend next year. Michael has been very clear that this isn’t a tear down and rebuild. We can win next year. You have that 6.5 million option for Lauriano. Do you want to go ahead and surrender him or is that a guy that you could use next year? That might be a bargain the way he’s playing right now. It depends, of course, on the offer. Uh, and you know, Andrew Kitridge, there’s the 9 million option there. Another guy, if you got him under team control for next year and you want to contend, that’s a big piece in a bullpen. But if a team looks at that and says, “Hey, we’ll give you such and such for him.” Might have to pull the trigger. So, I feel like any of those guys, anybody on an expiring contract is vulnerable right now. Anybody who’s under control, not talking about options, but just multiple years, those guys right now, they’re not looking to move. And that’s certainly not the core group and it certainly wasn’t going to be Felix Batista before the the sore shoulder. He wasn’t going anywhere. Yeah. Well, we know that you’ll have your binoculars locked in behind the box fan on Pressbox Row today. That fan is not helping at all, by the way. The hot air is just slightly moving. It’s It’s pretty bad. We’ll we’ll work on that. All right, Rock. Keep it cool and good luck with the rest of the stud line. bags.

  1. Hey Rock, Orioles’ moved 9 players yesterday, but this doesn’t compare to the 17 player trade between the Yankees and Orioles in 1954 (trade took 17 days to finalize) . The trade was called greatest trade in baseball .
The trade started on November 14 and was finalized on December 1st.
