MLB LIVE🔴 San Diego Padres vs St. Louis Cardinals – Aug 2, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

John Shabi and Chris Singleton with you. The first half of the All-Star break is behind us and partner, it’s go time in the second half. And if you want to be playing meaningful games at the end of September, you got to put your head down and grind for the next 8 weeks. Coming to you live from Southern California, MLB The Show brings you baseball on a rainy night. It’s the St. Louis Cardinals and the San Diego Padres’s. First pitch coming at you right after the break. All right, just about set to go. And our starting pitcher here today, Dylan Cease. And Singy, that may be his name, but the strikeout is his game. Well, Boo, I can tell you’ve been working on that one, but yes, you are right. This guy strikeout for nine over 11. I mean, that’s just getting it done. There are a lot of strikeouts in that other lineup. And when you look at what he’s able to do, man, it’s going to be a fun one to watch today. Brendan Donovan, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. Come on, Dylan. Fouled off left side. That one fouled off. Base hit center field. So, a man on base to start the inning. still able to come through behind in the count right there. Everything was on time and fluid in that swing. Got a pitch he could get the barrel on and lined it into center for the knock. Those always feel good. And now it’s Ivon Herrera. [Music] Ball one, no strikes. And another ball. Donovan aboard here at first with nobody out. Come on. In the dirt. Two balls, one strike. [Applause] Slice the other way. That’s a base hit. Lead runner holds up. They’re at first and second with nobody out. Two consecutive base hits for this team. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. First and second, no outs. And now the DH Alec Burlson misses inside. And that is ball one. and that one missing low. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. First and second here, no outs. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. And they’re happy to play station to station right here. Bases loaded, nobody out. Well, that was one of those high percentage advantage counts where batting averages are just so much higher. Pretty tough for the infielders to do anything with that one. He pulled it hard into the outfield and even when you keep it on the ground, it feels great when you hit a missile like that. Here comes Wilson Contreras and that’s outside. This is a hitter who takes his game to another level playing at night. [Music] [Applause] And that’s a little bit high. Two and 0. Pressure’s on right here. Two count. Base is loaded. You don’t want to fall to a three ball count and then walk in or on. He’s got to challenge the hitter right here. Yeah. Now, two balls in a strike. I need a strike out and you need a ball perhaps on the ground for a double play or get yourself a popup, something. But you’ve got to make some pitches. But if he can battle and get through this, he can earn some points. Next offering way off the plate. Base is juiced. No outs. Swing and a fly ball in the air out towards right center field. Squeezes it. Runner tags from third. Puts the tag on him and it’s a double play. [Applause] Such an impressive play defensively right there. The outfielder on the run. first makes the catch but then quickly able to set his feet and get a strong enough throw with accuracy to the dish. Nice job by the catcher as well to finish it off. Just a highlight play. Mason Win will hit next. [Applause] The shorts stop takes a ball. The one that clips a corner. 2-1 in the dirt but kept close. Two aboard, two outs. Late on that fast ball. I would throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. There’s a swing and a drive and it gets into the corner, but it’s fouled. Looked like you got a little excited on that fast ball. Got to think to yourself, you want to stay up the middle that way if you’re a little bit early, you hit it out of the ballpark. If you’re a little late, opposite field not and that is that. So, the Cards strand a couple and now the Padres’s get their first opportunity in a scoreless ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back here in San Diego and our pitcher in this game, Steven Matz. Well, he’s putting together a really nice season on the mound. Erra RA in the low threes. Very respectable when you consider guys are looking to do damage. They’re not trying to just walk and hit singles. They’re trying to hit homers and draw walks and score runs. So when you have a guy that can limit the other team from scoring more than a few runs, that’s really tough to beat game in and game out. Fernando Tatis Jr. leading things off and takes a strike. [Music] Yeah, the lefty with the 01. And downstairs [Applause] [Applause] and El Nino is stifled for the K. Wow, that’s a tough call for the hitter, but the pitcher will take that all day long. the first baseman. Not quite in the strike zone, but he found a spot that the umpire is going to at least for now allow him to get that call. So, hitters are going to have to make an adjustment, but pitchers are going to learn from those things and really try to exploit them if they can. Luis Arise stands in. That one finds the zone. And that’s strike one. One out. Space is empty. Outside low and a count even one and one ground ball right side. Donovan onto first and two quick outs in the bottom of the first here tonight as we take a look at the Padres’s lineup. And Chris, this group has been struggling to put up runs lately. Well, they haven’t been on base a ton, and even when they are, they haven’t been hitting very well with runners on base. So, they need a player or two to really step up, have some quality at bats, hit according to the situation, and sort of break out of this. I think if they do, the rest of this lineup will follow. Come on, Manny. Manny Machado in the box now. No balls in a strike. Two out. Base is empty. Swinging a foul. Pushed off to the right. And that will get out of play. Andy O2. And down on strikes. And it’s a three up, three down in. Nothing doing there for the Friars. Scoreless after one. New inning getting started at the plate. Jordan Walker number 18 Walker in his second season batting sixth in today’s lineup. A former first round pick in 2020. CE back to work. A bit behind with that swing. It’s strike one. Just threw that fast ball by him. elevated and if you’re not looking up in that location, very difficult to catch up to, especially with that velocity. Back up the Oh, that got him. No chance for a play and let’s hope the righty’s not hurt on the mound. Now pitching Nick Petta is forced to the mound after the injury and he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits period. Here’s the catcher, Johel Po. That one finds a corner. One turn. Late swing fouled off. [Music] ball in the dirt. That one misses and the count is even. Two and two. in the dirt. Blocked. He’s in there. So, a wild pitch allows the runner to advance. You know, sometimes it takes a reliever a little time to get comfortable with the mound out there, especially when they come in trying to be nasty with every pitch they throw. Not exactly what they were looking for when they called him in, though. We’ll see if he can settle down. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out here in the top of the second. Stays alive. Man at second. Croninworth throws on to first. One out in the second. Not a bad outcome in that spot. The runner moves up to third and now they have a chance to drive in the go-ahead run. It’s not a knock, but at the end of the day, it’s a good at bat. So, up next, Thomas Sajay. This is the classic manufacturing a run situation. A runner at third, less than two outs, and a golden opportunity to bring him home. In there for strike one. No need to offer that pitch until you get to two strikes. It’s just a low percentage of success when you want to try to go after that down and away pitch the other way. Fair ball. Run scores easily and it’s one- nothing. The throw into second and he’s in there as a run scores. Comes through with the RBI. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. One out, runner at second. And up next for St. Louis, Victor Scott. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively on the ground right side and that’s just fouled. [Applause] One- one in the dirt. Runner at second here. One gone. [Applause] Swing and a popup. Cronin work. They got it for out number two. Now batting the second baseman, Brendan Donovan. Back to the top of the lineup. Here’s the second baseman, Brendan Donovan. He’s one for one. Lent off the game with a single in there and it’s 0 and one. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. One-1. Little trouble with this one behind the plate and a 1-1. Yeah, that’s fouled off. [Applause] Hammered base hit headed for the plate now. A long throw home and he’s out. Down and that ends the inning. Well, it’s pretty difficult to throw a base runner out at the plate with two outs on a base hit to the outfield. But an excellent job of coming up with it, getting rid of it quickly and throwing on the money. That is great technique from start to finish. Nice job to end the inning. Back here at Petco Park. Bottom of the second. Here’s the cleanup hitter for the Padres’s. Jackson Merrill. And there’s a fly ball deep right field. And that lands inside the party courts for a home run. Bottoms up. He’ll circle the bases. It’s 1-1. He only needed one swing to square it up. Not wasting any time in that at bat. Aggressive and it paid off. [Applause] Love to see a hitter aggressive on the first pitch of an at bat. You watch him from the on deck circle. So when you step in the box, you’re ready to pull the trigger wherever it’s at. Really good job by the hitter. Total conviction on that swing. Here’s Bog Guards now. Tapped at the plate, but it’s a foul ball. Just got to delete it. You give up that leadoff home run. Go back to work. Focus on this next batter. [Applause] And that’s in for a strike. And the count is 0 and2. Joe McDonald doing the home play duties here. Well, Joe is an interesting one. I’m always trying to figure out what exactly his zone is. Feels like it kind of moves around from game to game. Sometimes inning to inning outside low. Yeah, the count one and two. Yeah, I think that’s fair. I don’t think he’s ever way off with his balls and strikes, but yeah, I don’t think it’s easy to define what his zone is. Like you said, hit on the ground softly to short. Throws to first. That’s one out in the bottom of the second. Good sinker low in the zone right there. Reproduced exactly what he was looking for. Ball on the ground. Nice ground out. Here’s Gavin Sheets now. Left hand bat. Come on. And that’s through there for a strike. It’s 0 and one tied up here in the early going out to short. Win throws to first in time. Good fade and sinking action of that change up. Got that hitter to roll. The second baseman. Now here’s Jake Croninworth. [Applause] delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Two down, base is empty, but one run across. Bottom half of inning number two. Swings through that. More and more guys are looking to slug regardless of the count in this situation. We’ll keep a close eye on his approach. And that just misses. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading to count one, two. Don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you can get hurt. Two down. Nobody on. Swing. Get a ball popped up to Jay-Z sizing this one up. makes the play and it’s out number three. The Padres’s get one in the inning with a solo blast. All even now at 1-1. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. On to the third inning now. Here is Ivon Herrera. Herrera. That’s out to center field. Merrill calls it in and there’s one away. [Applause] Now that the designated hitter, Alec, now Alec Burlson, one for one with a single so far. That one ripped right center field and it’s into the gap around first heading for two. in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. Wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. Wilson Contraras now up to the plate. That’s a ball tried to attack with a sweeper. [Music] ball. One out, a runner at second. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. And a foul ball makes the count two and one. Diego man at second. Fast ball is outside. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here with a middle of the order hitter up, runner in scoring position. He’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike. Swings and misses. Three and two now. Spoils a two strike pitch. He’ll see another really great change of speeds. He goes off the off speed to the fast ball and the hitter doesn’t know what’s coming next. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. Payoff pitch and a swing and a miss. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. It’s a good breaking ball there just off the corner where you can’t really do much damage, but it’s close enough to where you got to protect. And he just couldn’t find a way to fight at all. [Applause] Burlson on it second with two down. Come on. And strike two. One, two. In the dirt. Runner holds. Count goes to one and two. And he deals on the ground right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. So, one left for the Cardinals. Still tied 1-1 as we go to the last of the third. Now, it’s the switch hitting outfielder Bryce Johnson. Johnson. It really feels like we might be running out of time before a rain delay is called. This rain is not letting up. Yeah. And if we do get a delay, the unfortunate thing is the clock’s going to start ticking on these pitchers and they won’t be able to keep their arms warm forever if it’s a long break and going to have to exit this game a little early. Swing and a miss. Adam out front for the strike out. Well, take a look at the three pitch sequence here. Pretty simple in terms of putting them away at the plate. Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher, you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle. And right there, clearly he was in swing mode, but all you can do is hope to foul that off. And now it’s Elias Diaz. Fall off foul. line to left. Here makes the play. That’s out number two. Now batting right fielder. So the San Diego batting order turns over and now the right fielder Fernando Tatiz Jr. 0 for one after striking out looking to start the game. Breaking ball misses down and away. Swing and a ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit and that keeps the inning going. [Applause] Way to get on. Way to get on. The first base. The next up for the Padres’s one so far. Tatis runs pitching for a strike. Safe at second. And that was not close. [Applause] That one drifts inside. Runner at second. Two down here in the last half of the third. And that is downstairs and the count two and one. And he pumps in a strike on the ground right side and foul ball inside. Almost got him. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with three hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. Two outs and one in scoring position. So now two on and two outs. The third baseman number 13 Manny first and second two out. Here’s Manny Machado now 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. First pitch just misses. One ball. No strike. [Applause] That one hammered but pulled fouled. Tatis the lead runner out at second. Arise at first. Two out of the inning and a count one and two. Well, he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit, but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs, you’ve got to expand the zone. He’s capable of going out there and doing damage with it. [Applause] [Music] swing and a miss and he’s down on strikes. He’s notched four strikeouts now. A lot of adrenaline. We can see it right there. And sometimes you just got to let it out. That’s an outstanding job of taking that, executing, and getting out of a tough inning. And welcome back to the ballpark. Start of the fourth now up for St. Louis. Jordan Walker. Walker. Just missed. That’s the ball. 10. No. And another ball. No strike. [Music] That’s in there. Three and one. 3-1. [Applause] It’s a lead off walk and that’s the go-ahehead run. Well, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hit didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. Yoel Poso next up for the Cardinals. Rolled out to second in his first at bat. [Applause] ball in the dirt but kept close. Nice job behind the plate there. [Applause] Swing and a miss and a count. One and one. One. One. Runner at first with no outs here with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Check swing. Appeal to first. No swing. Just held it back there. 2-2 now. Good job to fight that one off. F Thomas Sajayi in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Strike three. Got it with the sweeper. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Thomas Sajay. He doubled home a run at his first AB. fouled off. He was late. Man, at first one away. That missed by a lot. And that’s ball two. Right through there for a strike. Runner takes off in there for strike three. Go to second and that’ll end the inning. Trying to make something happen there on offense, but that’s the risk you run. Awesome. Strike him out. Throw them out. Double play to end the inning. And we’re back. John Chabi and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Jackson Merrill. Merrill. Yeah, the pitch is in for a strike and it’s all in one. You know, these Padres’s as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see. But I think they have to. And one and two. One ball, two strikes. And that’s outside. He’s been pitching well, but we’ll see what kind of adjustment the hitters make this second time through the order. We’ll know if he’s got really good stuff in this one or not. Pitch misses. Three balls, two strikes. [Applause] And down on strikes he goes. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. The batter. And here comes Sander Bogart. He’s 0 for one. Bogart. Bogarts who wears that number two on his back for his idol Derek Jeter. pulls that one foul. [Music] That one hooked. Fouled. All tied up. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. No, let’s go. Swing and a line drive ripped down into left center field and a touchdown for a hit and the Padres’s have a man aboard with one out. Good two strike hitting right there, Boo. A bit of a lost start for some. So that was nicely done to beat the odds. Nice line drive to Pullside. Met it out front, but just stayed through it nice enough and ripped it into the outfield. So now the DH spot, Gavin Sheets grounded out. His first time up. Pitch is in there. That’s strike one. Over 80% of his first pitches are strikes. You’re doing that, you could have a really good day out there on the mound. [Music] Oh, he’s really working him away this bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. Headed towards the corner. Walker hustling after it. Makes a nice running catch. Two down. Man, Boo, I love watching an outfielder take on the wall to make that play. And it’s a lot easier to watch from up here because that can be painful in the end. You know the wall’s coming up on you quickly. So you have to maintain concentration in able to make that catch and hold on to it after contact. Croninworth batting for the second time and that’s strike one. Bogarts off of first with two away and it’s one and one. to the right side and that goes foul. Two outs. Bows it back with two strikes. Oh, this is a good time to step out of the box. Take a deep breath. Reset. Couple of change ups. Probably won’t see another one here. Another one two. That one the other way. Makes the grab and that’ll end the inning. One left for San Diego. Score remains tied 1-1. We’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth. Yuki Mui and he’s had a struggle so far this year as you can see the inflated erra looking to bring that down a little bit right here. [Applause] Victor Scott now at the plate fly out his first time. 11. Victor Matsui measures 5’8 in 29 years old and he was born in Japan. Pitch misses. Ball one. Bullpin action for the Padres’s. Steven Kol appears to be getting loose. [Applause] The one- one is fouled off. The one two fights it off. He’ll see another upstairs and it’s two and two. Two balls, two strikes. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] got him swinging. And Chris, that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base. And the defense breeds a sigh of relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play. But that’s how you do it. Keep him off balance, get him out of there, and deal with the next guy. back to the leadoff spot in the St. Louis lineup. Brendan Donovan. Next up for the Cardinals popped up. Bogarts makes the grab. Two down. The batter, the left fielder, Ivon Herrera. Here’s the left fielder, Ivon Herrera. One for two. [Music] That one’s in there. Strike one. And a big swing and a miss. No ball. Two strikes. Got it. St. Louis goes down in order. Red Birds down quietly. Score remains deadlocked at one. Now pitching back now to start the bottom of the fifth and taking over on the mound. Sunny Gray still pretty early in the ball game. So this bullpen has some work in front of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs. Kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him. Johnson stands in now and watches strike one. You know, these Padres’s digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. They’ve hit seven line drives already and even though some of them have been for outs, there’s nothing wrong with delivering consistent hard contact. That’s almost always going to lead to positive results. [Music] ball. That’s a really good job of laying off the O2 high fast ball is going to make that pitcher really have to respect this hitter even though he’s behind in the count. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. The catcher. Here’s Elias Diaz. He’s 0 for one. Diaz. Fast ball for a strike. Action in the pen down there. Jojo Romero. The southpaw is throwing and getting that sinker dialed in. Swinging at a high-fly ball that’s out to center. Scott calls it in. Two away. now batting the right fielder. So the lineup flips over Fernando Tatiz Jr. to hit here. [Applause] That one finds the zone. 0 and one. Two down, nobody on. Last half of inning number five. Line drive. Could be extra bases. around first and hustling for second. The throw in and he’ll make it safely. That’s a double. Couple of hits in a row for him here. He really shot that one down the right field line and somehow found a way to keep it from slicing. Foul. One thing that was great about the approach. His head was down all the way through the pitch and that’s how you do it. A chance now to take the lead and at this point in the game that could be a deciding run. So digging in Luis Arazz and that is out of play. As a pitcher, you know, the runner on second is ready to push things with this speed. A base hit is probably going to be a big run. So you really have to execute on the mound [Applause] and fouled off. Tatis at second with two down. [Applause] Swing and a miss. And that is that. He’s in a tough spot. Had to make a great pitch. Did it. got the strike out, gets out of the jam. Clearly, he’s happy with those results. Back here in San Diego now. It’s the DH Ason, the designated hitter, Alec Burlson. Matsui back to work. And that misses one and0. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen for San Diego. Jason Adams up and loosening in the pen. Peralta a left-hander also throwing inside. Ball two. And another ball. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire bat. The first base. Go ahead. Run on base. Now, the Cardinals number four hitter Wilson Contrarus. 0 for two in this one. That’s through there for a strike. That’s a great take right there. Even though it’s a strike with the situation, runner on first base, you want to keep the ball off the ground and you swing at that pitch, most likely you roll into a double play. That one missing inside. One strike. [Applause] Rudder takes off and he grounds one back up the middle. Base hit. That was smoked through the infield and they had their first hit since the third inning. Just a nice job coming through in a pretty high leverage spot right there. I know that was a ground ball, but it was absolutely hammered through the infield. That’s not one you’re excited to get in front of if you’re an infielder. You know, they used to say charge it crazy. And up next for St. Louis, Mason win [Applause] 10. Squirts away a little bit. Runners stay put. That’s ball one. Go ahead run at second and we’re the top half of the six. [Applause] Two in the dirt. Blocked. Runners hold. Count moves to 2 and 0. swinging a miss and it’s two and one. Well, he came right at him right there, challenged him with the two fast ball. Not sure exactly what he was looking for, but got to imagine that’s a confidence booster on the mound. You’re in that hitter’s head a little bit. [Applause] Got leg and that is a big first out. Well, big strike out right there and maybe a little controversial with the call. I think he got a little bit of favor on the mound. No question about it. It’s not exactly what you want to see in a big spot like that. And I’m sure there’s some chirping going on from the dugout making it clear that wasn’t his best call behind the plate today. And now it’s going to be Jordan Walker. Runners [Applause] at first and second with one gone. All right. Wow. Inside. Just missed. It’s a big opportunity right here. But I love the way he’s slowing the game down. He’s shrinking his zone, making sure he gets the pitch that he wants to hit on the ground. Two ball feed to second. That’s one. Back to first. Double play. Nice job getting over. And that ends the inning. So no runs here on a base hit. No errors and one left. Hard in the order. 345 coming up. All tied 1-1. Back here at Petco Park. Bottom of the six. Now Machado up here. You know, Boo, Petco Park seems to be transforming into Machado’s castle. I mean, nobody’s hit more home runs in this ballpark. And Machado passed Adrien Gonzalez for the top spot on the list in 2023. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. That’s inside. [Music] Next offering is in for a strike. [Music] Swings through it and that’s a strike out. Here’s the center fielder, Jackson Merrell. He’s already homerred here in this one. Merrill. Ball one on a pitch inside. One ball. No strike. Drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck. This looks like extra bases and that’s going to roll to the wall and he’s into second base with one away as the go ahead run. Two hits for him in this one. Both for extra bases. Got to feel good about that. Anytime you can drive a ball into the gap the other way. It feels so good and that’s when you know you’re right where you need to be at the plate. It’s even better when it gets you extra bases. Got to love looking in at your dugout and seeing your teammates fired up. One out, runner at second. Bogarts digs in now. Sunny Gray checks on the runner. Merrill back in on a dive. Good wheels out there on second and he’s getting a pretty big lead right now. Definitely looking to score on any hit to the outfield. Swinging a foul out of play. [Applause] on the ground to third and that chance handled. Zips it to first. Bogart’s retired. Up next for the Padres, the designated hitter, Gavin. Sheets. Gavin Sheets. The next up for the Padres’s on the ground to first. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. So, one hit is all they get. We’re through sixfold. All tied 1-1. [Applause] Now, pitching. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Jason Adams. And he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. And now the Cardinals catcher Yel Poso. Yoel Poso. Swing and a tapper then rolls foul. Now this is in the air down the line. He’s got it. One down. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. Thomas Sajayzi next up for the Cardinals and that’s in the dirt and it’s one and0. Bases empty, one away here in the top half of inning number seven. rolled softly, but that goes foul. Here’s a one, two. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. [Music] gets a piece and stays alive. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. Outside low and the count’s even at two. Ball three. Full count. and he grounds one to the right side. Over to first. So they get the out after a long battle at the plate. The center fielder number 11, Victor Scott. Now up for St. Louis. Victor Scott singing. You got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively. I mean, watching him track balls in the outfield, it is beautiful. First catch and he just misses. So, how much does his speed factor into his ability to go get it? It’s heartbreaking for the hitter because off the bat, he thinks this ball’s going to get down because of that speed and the ability to make up so much ground. He enters the picture and breaks a guy’s heart. So, a foul ball makes it one and two. There’s one guy that I can think about, Boog, who started as a third baseman, Alex Gordon, and then became an elite perennial gold glover out in left field for the Kansas City Royals. But he’s a guy Bogarts with the throw to first. And that is that. So, no runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left. Seventh inning, stretch time, all tied 1-1. [Music] Now pitching. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Bill Mton. He’s throwing the ball very well overall this season. He’s been really tough to get to. You see that erra and that’s where you love to be. Now it’s the second base. The second baseman. Jake Cronin work. [Applause] There’s the strike. Well, a good slider from an opposite handed pitcher has to stay in that tunnel just a little bit longer. Otherwise, recognition can cause you to barrel it up. And right there, the hitter clearly couldn’t do anything with it. Just off the inside edge. Just missed. [Applause] Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. And he’s going to make it to first. And we’ll see how they score it. Leadoff man aboard on the error. And that puts your pitcher in a little bit of a tough spot right away to start the inning. Not where you want to be. So, we’ll see if he’s able to work around it and pick the defense up. Next to hit, Bryce Johnson. [Applause] Ground ball left side. Could be two. Boots it. No throw. Save at first. And we’ll see if it’s an error. I think he just rushed out. Great chance to turn two. And as an infielder on a play like that, I think guys can get a little excited and forget to make the play one step at a time. Could have been two outs. Instead, they get none. Elias Diaz the next to hit and that bunched towards third and a foul ball. [Applause] and he lays one down the left side, rolls across the diamond. The runners move up on the sacrifice. That’s a good piece of hitting right there. The job is to move the runner up and give your team a chance to score the go ahead run. That’s exactly what happens. So you better believe your teammates are happy with you after that at bat. And the batter will be Fernando Tatis Jr. outfield deep here trying to prevent anything over their heads. I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone here. Pitchers looking for calling for the intentional walk and that loads up the bases and the force play is down. And here’s the first baseman Luis Sas. Boo. This has been a good one. A really good game to this point and huge opportunity with the bases loaded. [Applause] Donovan for one and that’s two. These boys are ready to make a play with the bases loaded. Excellent job of execution there. You turn the double play and the inning is over. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Wandy Peralta. Well, he’s been excellent against left-handed hitters this year and that’s his first test. This looks like a good move to the pin in terms of the matchup. Back to the top of the order now. And here’s the St. Louis leadoff man, Brendan Donovan. That misses. And that’s ball one. Activity in the bullpen. Robert Suarez, the closer is getting loose. [Applause] That one missed. [Applause] That’s in there. And it’s two and one [Applause] on the ground out to short. whips it across. Lead off man is out here in the eighth. So up next, Ivon Herrera struck out on just three pitches last time. That pitch clips the outside corner. That’s strike one. [Applause] just missed. Next offering in there for a strike and a count one and two. Swinging a miss. that one in the dirt. Gets to it on first. Got him. Two gone after the strike out. So now here’s the Cardinals designated hitter, Alec Burlu. [Applause] And that’s it for a strike. It’s 0 and one. 01. Foul ball there. [Applause] Two down. And that’s outside. [Music] Off the mark there. Now two and two. Just misses with that one. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. Wilson Contrarus in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Two outs. Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Ninth pitch of the at bat do next. Come on, punch him out. Swung on. Popped up left side. Bulgarts. And that is that. And we’re back on the bottom of the eighth. And now it’s Manny Machado. Manny Machado. [Applause] That one outside. And that’s ball one. [Applause] I’ve gotten to call some incredible NLDS games here at Petco Park between the Padres’s and their fierce rivals, the LA Dodgers. NLDS game four here in 22 when the Padres’s knocked off LA and then game four in 2024 when the Dodgers started their comeback and eventual run to the World Series. One of the great fan environments in baseball. slings it across and that’s one away as the leadoff man is out in the eighth. Next for the Padres’s, Jackson Merrill. He’s already homerred in this game. Padres [Applause] swing and a highf fly ball left field. He makes the catch and there’s two down. Now batting the shorts stop Xander Bogart. And here is Xander Bulgart’s one for three. That’s off the inside corner. Ball one. just missed. Two down, nobody on here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Inside just missed. Gavin Sheets in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. and a four pitch walk. One of the things about that two out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So all down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI and those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. Now pitching, new arm of the mound for the Cardinals, Jojo Romero, left-handed batter at the plate, and he’s been excellent in those matchups this year. So, this seems like a calculated move. Runner at first with two away. Next is the designated hitter, Gavin Sheets. 0 for three in this one. [Applause] And that one clips the corner. That pitch started in and ended up on the outside edge. Just changing planes and very difficult especially for a left-handed hitter to track on the ground right side in and over on the ground out. Took just two pitches to finish the frame out of the bullpen. Padres’s leave one. It’s the ninth and we are tied. Now pitching for the welcome back. And here comes the closer, Robert Suarez. And one thing on him, he’s been really good this season at keeping the ball in the park. Not an easy guy to take deep. And up to him is Wilson Contras. First baseman, Wilson Contras. And that one fouled off. I want to start that load a little bit sooner because of the good vlog [Applause] and a miss as he was late that time. got him looking and a strike out for the first out here in the ninth. Mason win next up for the Cardinals 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. [Applause] That’s in for a strike. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Steven Colet appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. [Applause] One down. Base is empty. Way inside. Straighten him up a little bit. [Applause] strength three and that’s two in a row. Got a little bit of a questionable call on that fast ball right there. Appeared to miss off the outside just a little bit according to the electronic strike zone, but that’s the type of location where you kind of have to understand that it’s close enough to where you don’t want to put the fate of your bat in the hands of the umpire. He did and it got burned. Now it’s the right fielder, Jordan Walker. [Applause] There’s the strike. Looks like the weather could actually play a factor in this one. It’s coming down pretty good. Yeah, it is. And it’s not too bad yet, but the field’s not going to be able to hold up if the rain gets any worse than this. So, keep an eye on the pitcher mound as well. And the rest of the infield start to puddle up a little bit. That misses the zone. One and one. [Applause] And a foul ball all tied up here in the top of the ninth. And that’s a strike out. Lucas and he strikes out the side in the ninth. Offense held in check there. Bottom part of the order. 789. Two up in inning number nine. All tied 1-1. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the ninth. Here’s the second baseman. Jake Croninworth on the ground to short. Win tosses across to first and the leadoff man retired here in the ninth. The left fielder number 29 Bryce pinch hitter coming up Jose Glacius and this is a big bat in this ball game. [Applause] Off the mark there. Ball one. Just off the inside edge moving in the bullpen. Ryan Hley, the hardthrowing righty is up and loosening. [Applause] The change up missing. Three and0 played umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. [Music] And there’s the automatic. Base is empty. One away here in the last half of inning number nine. [Applause] Late swing fouled. All [Applause] this one in the air. Contrarus gets under it. He’s got it. And there’s two away. That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. Just got underneath a little bit and popped it up. Alias. And here’s the catcher, Elias Diaz. [Applause] Ball one low. One ball. No strike. [Applause] It’s strike one to the catcher. One ball, one strike. Next pitch is downstairs. [Applause] Check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Hard hit right side. That’s the third out and we’re headed to extras. Tyler Wade. He’s out in left field getting loose there as he enters the game on defense now. Number 14 back here in San Diego. Now it’s going to be Yoel Poso. Man at second, nobody out. And Chris certainly one of the things in his head is trying to get the runner over. Yeah. The way that we see the game played today though, guys are not sacrificing as much just to get that runner across. They’re really looking at doing damage. Slugging is the name of the game. [Applause] [Music] swing and a miss. That’s strike two. Yeah, I think part of that goes into it’s just so hard to come up with hits in today’s game. Start. Oh, that got away from him. And he’s going to reach on a hit by pitch to lead off the inning. Now the third base, Thomas Sajy. Thomas Sajy. bunting, but that’s a foul ball with the go-ahead run standing at second. And here in extra innings and he pops up the bunt on a Croman. Substitution now at first base. And here’s the pinch runner, Garrett Hson. Garrett. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Victor Scott. Pretty good speed over there at first base. I think the pitcher’s got to slow everything down. Hold the ball a little bit. Step off. Just try to break the rhythm and timing of a potential base stealer. Fall off. Foul. This guy absolutely flies. The defense wants to turn two, but they’ve got to get a ball they can do it with. Make sure you get the first out before you try to rush and get two and end up with nothing. Two on, one out. Double steel. [Applause] To first and he beats it. Everyone’s safe. A run comes in on the play. It just doesn’t get any better than this for the offense. The squeeze produces the go-ahead run. And it doesn’t even cost him an out. A perfect play and a big one this late in the game. And up next for St. Louis, Brendan Donovan. And that one fouled off a little out front there as he swings through. Activity in the bullpen for San Diego. Steven Kola, the young right-hander up and throwing. Number 66 also getting ready. Hampson at second. Scott over at first. So one away. Triple digits on that last pitch. Typically that high fast ball if it’s close to the top of the strike zone. A hitter if he’s prepared for it can get to it. But that one just had that little jump at the end which indicates there’s a good spin rate on it and it didn’t decrease in velocity as that hitter’s internal clock would expect it to. And that’s why you see the swing and miss. Here in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. [Applause] That misses the zone. And now it’s even one and one swing and a ball softly hit out of the left center. Bogarts settles under it and makes the catch and that’s the third out. Two men left stranded, but they do push across one. Last chance to even things up. We head to the bottom of inning number 10. It’s the Cardinals two and the Padres’s one. back now and on the mound the closer Brian Hellley. Save opportunity for him right here and he’s their guy. Time to lock this one down and get out of here with a W. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Now it’s Fernando Tatis Jr. Now this guy a player that if he gets on base has the ability to really be aggressive getting around the base paths. [Applause] Well, comfortable or not, these are the situations closers they seem to live for. I mean, you get into some hot water, a jam, tough spot, whatever you want to call it, but this is where they earn their keep. [Applause] So, the tying run at second. That one is upstairs. That was absolute gas. Triple digits on the gun. It’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by. [Applause] And there’s the ball. Almost feel like he’s frustrated a little bit. He wants to be challenged. Luis Aas in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] Fast for a strike. One way to make a guy real uncomfortable at the plate is pound him inside with good velocity. They’re doing that right here. [Applause] Man second and fouled off. [Applause] swings and misses. Struck him out. Well, that right there is what you want to see out of your base. Come in and close the door, cancel any hope that that opponent has in making some type of comeback in the ball game. Tell you what, that helps him settle in and that helps everybody else relax a little bit to get these other two outs. [Applause] up to bat next. Lays off for a ball. Nasty back door slider. There’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it. So, it’s a good take by him. That one in triple digits. One-1. [Music] Here’s a one-1. Yeah, that’s fouled off. [Music] [Applause] Oh, that fast ball drilled him. He had two strikes on him and he hit him to the dish for a pivotal at bat for four with three strikeouts and he’s grounded out. [Applause] Oh, he doesn’t get the call. One and0. He’s getting squeezed a little bit here late. [Applause] [Music] Swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. [Applause] Next one misses. Two balls in a strike. Way to lay off that pitch down. [Applause] Back to back breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you, that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So I think the confidence level was raised right here. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] The other way. Contraras. The three is outlined and he’s in to score. It’s 22. A potential double play ball hit to first is probably the toughest one to execute cleanly. That first baseman, he’s got a very tough throwing lane to deal with because of the runner headed to second base. And a lot of times guys try to throw over or around the runner which can really mess up a throw like that. Still definitely an error though. Jackson Merrill steps to the plate in a clutch situation. [Applause] Just missed. [Applause] This one chopped on the ground but foul. [Applause] Well, you put good velocity in the head of the hitter. He’s got to get it ready early and then change speeds. Keep him off balance. That’s the goal. The one two. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. I don’t know what he’s looking for right there. You have to be ready to swing the bat. You can walk it off if you’re just a little more aggressive. Bogart. It’s Xander Bogarts now. [Applause] That misses and that is ball one. [Applause] Late swing fouled off all. Two on, two outs. Swings and misses. And it’s one and two. I’d say that stayed in the tunnel for a long time. No chance of even fouling it off. [Applause] And what a swing and a miss. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. A run on no hits, an error, and a hit batter. We push on to the 11th. We are tied 2-2. Now pitching for the welcome back. And on the mound to start the 11th inning, Steven Kick. And as relievers go, he’s not a big strikeout guy. Tries to force weak contact, so command and execution are huge for him. Here’s the Cardinal DH, Alec Burlson, leading off for St. Louis. The designated hitter, Alec Burlson. Hard hit down the line and left. And that’s a fair ball. The run comes in from second and they’ve got the lead in extra innings. Not in time. That’s a leadoff double. Well, that’s how you respond. Leadoff man comes up, gets in the scoring position. Now, there are several ways that they can get this run across. Here’s Contraras now. Went down looking on three pitches last time. And let’s see if he can be a little more aggressive right here. Ground ball left side. Machado throws to first in time and Contrarus is retired. Now batting short stop Mason win. Mason win next up for the Cardinals. Let’s go. [Applause] out in front and foul to the left side. One out and a runner at second. [Applause] The O2 and the sweeper misses. Man at second. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another [Applause] the one two fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. One out and a runner at second. We are in the 11th. Oh, he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. He’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit. Try to move it around. Create just a little bit of illusion at the end. Two balls, two strikes. Almost got him. [Applause] And ball four to a board. Well, he took his chance at getting him to chase right there. But with first base open, walk not a bad thing. He set up a double play opportunity if he can induce a ground ball. First and second, one out. Walker will hit next. [Applause] And that’s through there for a strike. Going one. Really good job in this spot to get ahead in the count. He’s going to have to continue finish off this hitter. Two on, one out. In the air on the infield and the infield fly is called. The batter, the catcher, Yoel Poso. Yoel Poso getting ready to hit. [Applause] And there’s a foul ball, two outs. And that’s off the inside edge. And the count is one and one. [Applause] Line to left. Nabs it. And that is that. But a run will score in the inning on this RBI double. It’s now a 32 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball on the show now. Pitching back here in extras and a new pitcher on the mound in the bottom half of the inning. Andre Palante. I can’t imagine any safe. Gavin Sheets now at the plate. 0 for four with three ground outs and a fly out. Sheets backed off the plate that time. [Applause] No, inside. That just misses. And now 3 and 0. Would love to see him get the green light even with the three 0 count right here. Let’s see if he can create some magic. So definitely a little wild right out of the gate. Well, it could be a little tough coming from the bullpin mound to this mound, but you’ve got to find a way to get ahead in the count quickly. He hasn’t. We’ll see how this at bat turns out. At 96, that pitch is in for a strike. [Music] [Applause] Basketball for a strike. Getting a little frustrated with the strike zone. Popped dump makes the grab and there’s one down. The batter number nine, second baseman Jake Croninworth. Now it’s the second baseman Jake Croninworth and there’s no doubt that they’ll feed off the energy from this crowd, right? I mean, yeah, I’d say the intensity level has gone up a few notches for sure. In the air, foul off first. He’s under it. Drops into the glove. Two-way now. Got the pitch that he wanted. Just a little bit quick. Front shoulder open, backside collapsed a little bit, and the launch angle not where he needed it to be. Last chance for the Padres’s now. Batting Tyler Wade taking his first at bat of the game after entering on defense. Hit to right and that ought to do it. He’s got it. Ball game and the Cardinals strand the tying run on base to win it. The ball for his first career save deserves to be on display at his house. I mean, it’s kind of like when a restaurant frames its first dollar bill somewhere in a wall. You just can’t forget your first save. 32 the final score. A oneun extra inning win for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shambi. Thanks for joining us.
