Game 72 – 1998 Arizona Diamondbacks Revisionist History v Oakland Athletics @ Network Ass. Coliseum

Hey everybody, welcome back to Brainiac Baseball’s 1998 Arizona Diamondbacks revisionist history. Today’s matchup is between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Oakland Athletics at the Network Associates Coliseum. On the mound for the Diamondbacks today is Mike Hampton, whose record is 4-4 with a 3.31 erra. And pitching for the A’s is Tim Hudson, whose record is 9-4 with a 3.49 RA. Okay, we have a modest little three-game winning streak after yesterday’s victory over the A’s. We won six to four. Uh not the best performance from Andy Bennis, but he did manage to get the win. Uh giving up all four of the runs and then the bullpen came in and did their jerbs and uh we we looked pretty solid. We didn’t we had 13 hits in that ball game, not one extra base hit. And I think we counted at least eight hits to left field. And I know the game can’t possibly know this, right? But, you know, we’re in the power area era where everyone is pulling everything. And you know, if if this were our 1970s Seattle Pilots sim, yeah, there were a lot of slap hitters. People were going to the opposite field. They were trying to make contact. They were doing everything they could to not strike out. And that’s not the era that we’re in. Um, and with Mike O’Quist, I think he had an 80 mph fast ball or that was the top speed for a fast ball that he didn’t even have. So, you know, like how would they be slapping it to the other field instead of pulling it? When I went back and watched the game yesterday, that’s the first thing that really stood out to me is all the um base hits to the opposite field, which just didn’t make sense. Uh, but we got game two of the series today. We’re uh facing off against Tim Hudson and Mike Hampton will get the start for us. He now leads the team in ERA with Andy Bennis giving up the four runs yesterday. So, uh interesting to see that Mike Hampton actually leads our team uh in uh RRA. We’ll see if that holds up against the A’s lineup. So, let’s go ahead and get today’s game started. As always, I appreciate everyone following along. Like andor subscribe to the channel. I’m sure everybody knows by now that we do have a contest, uh, a free giveaway that’ll take place during the seventh inning stretch of game 80. This is game 72, so you essentially have a week to enter. If you want to get in on it, there’s four prizes. Uh, we have nine contestants, so those are pretty good odds. Uh, and even if you were to enter now, you would still have a pretty good chance to win, I would think. Uh, so get in on the giveaway. Let me know in the comments below that you want in on the giveaway and I will add you to the list. Okay, Mike Hampton. There you see him looking pretty solid and we have all of our bullpen available today. And then our lineup versus Tim Hudson. The only difference today is I’m going to sit Jay Bell. I mean, he is just horrible. And we’ll let Hanley Frias uh get the start at shortstop today. uh better defensively technically, but also a pretty pretty terrible hitter. Uh otherwise, everybody else is the regular guys. Uh we do have Pudge Rodriguez back in the lineup after a day off yesterday. Okay, let’s go ahead and do the lineup rundown for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Batting lead off in left field is Bernard Gilkkey. Batting second and dinging is Arubiel Dazzo. Batting third at catcher is Ivonne Rodriguez. Batting cleanup in right field is Bobby Higginson. Batting fifth at third base is Matt Williams. Batting sixth at first base is Travis Lee. Batting seventh in center field is Rob Ryan. Batting eighth at second base is Todd Walker. And batting ninth is the shortstop Hanley Frias. Okay, we got Timmy on the mound. Tim Hudson. Uh you’ll see that his card for 1998 is actually a minor league card. In ’98 he was still in the minor leagues. He didn’t make his debut until 99. So he’s way ahead of his schedule making his 16th start. 9 and4 with a 349 RA 81 strikeouts in 105 and 2/3 innings pitched. Opponents only betting 230 against him. Couple complete games and a shut out. Fast ball topping out at 97 mph. very high percentage for ground ball. The game seems to think that he’s got six pitches. A sinking fast ball is his best pitch rated at 93. And a splitter rated an 85. His cutter is a 78, just below league average. This is for a 22-year-old rookie who wasn’t even in the majors yet. And overall, he’s got a 90 rating with a peak of 93. Look at his peripheral ratings. I mean, they’re all kind of amazing. um a real indicator for what he was during his peak period in real life. Certainly, I don’t think he’s quite there yet, but um should be a tough ball game for us today. 22-year-old righty is arbitration eligible at the end of the 2000 season. Look at his log. Now, he is coming off a no decision to the Dodgers. Uh he went seven innings giving up two runs and then before that he had his complete game shut out versus the Giants. So, he was on a hot stretch. In fact, the last time he gave up more than three runs was back on May 10th when he gave up five runs to Minnesota. So, maybe uh Todd Walker has a good history against him. I guess we’ll find out. Let’s take a look here at the defense for the Oakland A’s. Now Henderson’s in left field as he was yesterday, but his defensive rating is down to a 70. That’s weird. And the infield looks pretty good other than uh Giani at first. Not really known for his glove anyway. Behind home plate is AJ Hinch once again. Um they have Christensen in center field, somebody named Chef in Wright, Boragle at second base. So they are mixing it up today. and Bell Horn’s at third. Not a bad defensive alignment though. Okay, here we go. Bernard Gilkkey leading it off against Tim Hudson. Gilkkey by far the hottest hitter on the team. Fivegame hitting streak, batting 320 over the last 20 games and a ground ball to second. That’s Boragle making the play. One out. Here’s a Rubio Dazzo. He’s under 200 in the last 20 games. Even when he hits it hard, he hits it right at somebody. That’s Miguel Tahada making the play. Two down and Pudge Rodriguez after a day off. It’s a ground ball to second and Barnagle makes a play as well. So we go to the bottom of the first. Let’s take a look at this A’s lineup today. Batting lead off at third base is Mark Bellhorn. Batting second in left field is Ricky Henderson. Batting third at shortstop is Miguel Tahada. Batting cleanup at first base is Jason Giani. Batting fifth and catching is AJ Hinch. Batting sixth and ding is Scott Speizzio. Batting seventh in center field is Ryan Christensen. Batting eighth in right field is Chris Chef. And betting ninth is the second baseman Raphael Boragle. Okay, take a look here at Mike Hampton. [Applause] Uh, two and two in nine starts. This coming over from Houston. 338 RA, 33 strikeouts in 48 innings pitched and opponents are betting 247 against him. Fast ball topping up at 95 miles an hour. He is a fly ball pitcher and yet he’s only given up four home runs this year. His fast ball is his best pitcher rated an 85 only pitch he has overall rated a 78 to 25 year old lefty making big money maybe even more so after he goes to arbitration this year look at his log there’s seven innings against Anaheim in which he did not give up a run five hits couple of walks he struck out eight and in the previous start he was seven innings versus Pittsburgh only giving up two runs So, pretty solid here of late. We’ll take a look at our defense. [Applause] Well, with everybody in the same position, pretty solid as you can see. Free at short is actually higher rated than Bell. Bell’s a 79. Free is at 83. I’m not sure that really means much. Behind home plate once again is Pudge. Switch hitter Mark Bellhorn leading it off against Mike Hampton with a one-two count and Hampton strikes him out. Hampton really not a strikeout pitcher in this sim, but he did have a couple really good years uh in the majors in real life with strikeouts. Top 10. Ricky Henderson popping it up. He was pretty quiet yesterday. He walked once and did not steal the base. and Miguel Tahada with two quick outs. It can never be easy. Base hit to the opposite field, of course. Tahada on first for Jason Giani. 3-1 and the uh poo poo batter in the inning with the strikeout walk combo. Here’s AJ Hinch, current Tigers manager. Mentioned that yesterday. Two two a ground ball to first. Teely taking the plate. Top of the second inning. Bobby Higginson stepping into the plate. Betting 325, 10 home runs. And another ground ball. Wait, he is a ground ball pitcher, right? Yeah, very high amount. Okay, well, at least the game is following its own information. Matt Williams gets a hold of one. Lions to left. Ricky tracking it down and Travis Lee. Six in a row for Hudson. Bottom of the second. Here’s the DH Scottzio. Little floater to right going to make the catch. I I know that for variety’s sake the game has to go directly and then into the gaps and then center field. And you know how it goes. But I when they they fly out to right center or left center in the middle, I have no idea who actually makes the catch. They’re saying it’s a fly out to right, but I think that’s just, you know, the dialogue. I don’t think it actually necessarily means that Bobby Higginson made the catch. You know, maybe Ryan has a better um range. You know, I I don’t know. I do know that he does, but it I don’t know if he makes the catch or not. Here’s Ryan Christians send their second walk issued now. Chris Chef, didn’t this clown hit a home run against us? Yeah, he did. Oh, no. He had two doubles and a triple and an RBI in a game back in May. Made his whole damn season really. One out, runner on first. Could Christensen be going? Full count. Okay, so we’ve definitely lost today’s game. There’s nothing we can do about that. When Mike Hampton starts walking the bottom third of the lineup, you know, the game is over. Raphael Barnagle does not have a hit versus lefties, so he’s clearly going to get one here. Yeah, that’ll get everybody in. There’s nothing we can do to stop it now, so we’ll just play it out. We will pull the infield in for shits and giggles, but this will be a fly ball or home run or something. All right, so yeah, the game is over. We can just get it over with here. So that’s great. He walks four batters in the inning. Totally realistic. Oh, now there’s one from Hudson. Let’s hit and run with uh Todd Walker. It’s our first base runner, so we got to maximize any opportunity to try to score. We may not get another opportunity. Walker gets a base hit to center. That’s our first hit. Ryan goes to third. [Applause] [Music] We’ll go on contact even if it’s a double play. That run will score and give us a little bit of hope. Oh, it’s back to the pitcher, so that doesn’t matter. Yeah, this game was over before it ever started. Joki though, he does remain hot with a double. Naturally, Freas will not score from third. Why would he? And a liner to right. So that’s it. That’s the only run we’re going to get today. Oh, that was Oh, that was only two outs. Oh, I’m I’m way off. Should have drank that fifth of scotch. It’s too early for that. Okay, well, we tied it up. Uh, great job by um Dazzo getting the sack fly to tie it. Okay, well, look, they’re making it interesting. Now he’s already walked five batters and he’s given up two hits. I mean, that really ought to be enough, right? Oh, no. AJ Hinch with a ground ball to third. Here’s Scott Speizio. Ground ball to short. You know, as I mentioned yesterday, this is the Moneyball A’s. They were paid to take walks. And a one, two, three bounce back inning. Top of the fourth. Here’s Higgy leading off. One, two. Yeah, nice curveball from Hudson. I actually don’t remember what Hudson’s main pitch was. I don’t believe the game actually gets the pitches correct unless it’s a knuckle ball pitcher. Matty Williams with the base hit in the center. Potential double, but we’re going to say no. [Applause] Let’s see if T League can come through. Still betting 342 versus righties. This Tim Hudson though count it out. And Rob Ryan had a good game yesterday. lines it into left field for a base hit into the corner. Holy smokes. Matt Williams scoring from first. I don’t know if he ever did that, but Ryan gets a double. I think that’s his ninth. It is his ninth. It’s good to see Rob Ryan coming back. Had that incredibly hot start and then went dead for a while. Three to two. And Walker’s going to float it over the first baseman’s head down into right field. Another run scores. This is Todd Walker’s breakout game. It’s four to two. Great job by Walker. I mean, he is hitting well in our uniform. His overall numbers don’t look great, but he’s six for 16. So, he’s given a little bit of oomph to the second base position. I want to say we’re batting under 200 in that position combined with Spivey and Batista and uh Stankowitz free will pop it up. Okay, bottom of the fourth inning. Let’s uh see if we can’t get it under control here now that we have the lead. Chris Chef flying out to center. Here’s Raphael Barnagle popping it up. Frias will make the catch. And we’re back to Bellhorn [Applause] popping it up as well. That is exactly what we need. That’s going to be seven in a row for Hampton. Top of the fifth inning. Let’s keep it going. Here’s Bernard Gilkkey. Six-game hitting streak now. Riner at Boragle. Didn’t even have to move. Dazzo had the RBI on the sack. Fly. Flies out to left and the pudgy one. There we go. There’s a gapper for the catcher. coming back after a day off, shooting it into left center field. His 13th overall double, ninth as a diamond back. He’s still batting 315 for us. That is a guy that only intentionally walks. [Applause] I do like looking at the uh the stats as they accumulate over the season. We’re coming up on the halfway mark as Bobby Higginson strikes out. I’m very curious to see what we’re on pace for for home runs. Did I kill our uh game sim by taking the home run percentage down 20%. Um, I mean, if the game works properly, then we’ll be right in line with what uh the with the quantity of home runs that were hit prior to the steroid arrow. Speaking of that, all roeded up, Miguel Tahada plants one in the left field bleachers. I used to sit out there. Right about there above the uh the drummers. [Applause] All right. Four to three. And Giani, they’re going to go back to back. And no, there’s six walks. That’s brilliant. Giani on first. AJ Hinch for two today. There’s a ground ball to third. Catch a running. Giani double play. Easy. Tahada hits his 10th home run of the season. We go to the top of the sixth inning. There’s Matt Williams. 02 infield single. He had an infield single in yesterday’s game. Average is up to 280. Now leadoff man is on. Now Travis Lee, despite batting well over 300 versus Wrighty’s is 0 for two with two strikeouts. 01 and a double play. Oh, Williams will beat it out. Good hustle by Williams. He scored from first. He should be exhausted. Rob Ryan 22 swinging at nothing. And Todd Walker. Yeah, he’s three for five against Hudson this year. I think he’s two for two today. He strikes out looking. Bottom of the sixth inning. Hampton at 93 pitches. So, he’s going to be tired here momentarily. I think we got to start the inning at least with Speizio before we get to the right-handers and the base hit. So, that’ll do it for Hampton. Terrible performance today really, but he did kind of keep us in there. Boy, I guess we’re going to go with Baroski here. Barski just got blowed up, right? No, actually he got blowed up a little earlier when he took the loss versus Seattle and since then he’s been okay. Speio on first. Here’s Ryan Christensen. One-1 ground ball to second. Let’s turn two. Nope. We get the lead off lead runner at second now. Will Christensen go? He is speedy. Does he have any stolen bases? He’s two for two as a backup guy. [Applause] I think I’d be going here if I were them. Chris Chef striking out looking. Baroski coming in and getting the job done so far. Here’s Borneal. We’re going to guard the lines. You don’t want to double down the line having Christian scoring. If he hits it in the gap, there’s nothing much we can do about that with all the um territory out there. There’s a ground ball to third and Williams in the right place. Okay, we maintain the lead. Top of the seventh. In comes Jim Dhy. He’s not good. Taking a look at his stuff. He’s got a circle change. You don’t see a lot of those. And by that arm angle, looks like he’s a sidearm pitcher. We’ll see if the game recognizes that. Handley Frias. [Applause] Well, no. The game didn’t recognize it at all. Great job, game. Frios grounds out. Here’s Silky Gilkkey. Oh, there’s his third hit of the ball game. This guy is so hot. What? What? Oh, we could go for two. Hell’s to the Yes. Let’s go for it. Look, he’s already there. Christensen’s got a noodle arm. It’s only 155 ft. But Gilkkey so silky. Yes, there’s a double. Good job, Gilkkey. That is his 10th double of the year. Looking at his log, it’s his third uh multi-hit game in a row in scoring position for Dazzo, who’s kind of become useless. like he’s dropped all the way below 300. 2-1 floater, but that’s not going to get it done. Guy would be out no doubt at third after being safe once. So, it’s up to Pudge. Rodriguez does have a home run against DHY this year. 2-1 and a tapper back to the M. Well, we took a chance. Okay, Baroski, he did his jerb. Bottom of the seventh. We got a switch hitter batting 211 versus righties and then two more righties. So, we’re going to Russ Springer. I mean, the guy just plays every game mostly poorly. a 675 RA in the last 20 games. His last 20 appearances. Somebody’s got to do it. Here’s Bellhorn. First pitch tied up. His fourth home run of the season. Okay. Um I guess we got to let him pitch one more. no matter what. So, yeah, we never had a chance today as Henderson gets thrown out. That’s too bad. I like the fact that we fought back. We’re going to bring in Chris Hammond to face Giani, runner on first. And he walks the only left and he’s got a face. So stupid. Mike Mohler. So no victory for Hampton. He didn’t pitch worth. Yeah, it wasn’t worth it anyway. He was kind of garbage today. Mhler coming in to face Bobby. Lefty on lefty. We got a bunch of lefties coming up too. 22 Brown ball to short. So the A’s will walk this off and I guess in the bottom of the ninth inning. That’s what’s going to happen. I feel bad for whomever our ninth inning pitcher will be today cuz it’s a guaranteed loss. It might be a hit. No, of course not. Let’s see if he can get Speizio. [Applause] Ground ball to first. We’re going to bring in Clint Saddowski. Four and a third innings of work. Hasn’t really given up many hits. One out. Nobody on. And here’s Ryan Christensen. Two. Whoa. That was a nasty curveball. Whoa. I kind of wish I could see the trajectory of that again. And Chris Chef O2. And a base hit right back up through the box. Runner on first. We got to guard the lines. Born. Yep, we lost. Oh, nope. I thought that was going to fall in. All right, we’ll wrap it up here. Ryan Walker. Hey, a hit for Freos. Who would have thought it? Lefty on the mound. We got to try. We’re going to lose anyway. So, we’re going to steal try to steal second even with a lefty on the mound. His fast ball is his worst pitch. So, he’s going to throw some kind of junk. And we know the catcher’s got a bad arm. Frias has 88 speed. Everything says this is going to work except the fact that we have to lose. Frias is safe. And here’s our hottest hitter, Silky Gilkkey. 10 count. One, two. All right. Well, I hate to put it on Nelson Cruz, but you are going to get the L, sir. [Applause] Riffy popping it up intentionally walk GMBB and AJ Hench who I don’t think has had a hit uh this series ball game 54. We’re going to have some free baseball. That’s brutal. Dazzo batting 356 versus lefties and he still can’t hit. [Applause] Oh, here’s the endgame stats. Another over for Gaza Pudge. Not a lot of fiercenesses in this lineup today. Bobby Piggy. I mean, now we could try to steal here, but with Matt Williams up, he’s two for four. I think you got to let him swing. Don’t want to take the bat out of his hands. 01 and he got to let Cruz go a second inning of work. That’s always a bad idea. But all we’ve got left is uh Guzman unproven. [Applause] Let’s see if we can’t get one more inning out of Cruz. We’ll know here in a second. Yeah. Fly ball to center. I thought he was going to walk him for sure. Ryan Christensen. He doesn’t have any power. Ground ball destroyed. There’s got to be an error or something coming up. Chris Chef striking out. All right, 11th inning we continue. Who do we have on the bench now? Well, we’ve got Bell, we’ve got Gary Maddox Jr. If we get somebody on, we have to pinch run with Gary Maddox Jr. and then we’ll just figure out the defense. Jay Bell could play first. Let’s see if we can get T. Le on. He’s uh batting 056 versus lefties. One, two. Well, he ripped it, but unhelpful. Mohler officially tired. Rob Ryan, there’s a base hit. Well, Rob Ryan’s fast. Oh, do we want to go for two? I guess not. Now, do we want to run? I mean, it’s the bottom of our lineup. I think we got to try to steal here. And I think Ryan’s had a pretty good success rate. Seven for nine. You could say he’s due to get caught, but I think we got to try to steal. He’s going to go on the first pitch. He’s going low outside. Yeah. And he does steal it. Number eight. Todd Walker having a good game. He’s two for four. One for three against Mohler. One, two. Ah, All right, it’s going to be up to Frios. Nope. Damn it. All right. Well, we’re going to Guzman. We do have Omar Dah left. I guess [Applause] Guzman’s got 81 endurance. He could pitch eight innings if we needed him to. Uh but we it won’t get that far. He’s only had one appear or Oh, no. How many has he had? He got one appearance. He went one and two/3s, gave up two runs on three hits, and walked two. Who was that against? Uh a terrible team. Uh Texas. All right. Here we go. Hornagle floater out to right. One out. Mark Bellhorn already has a home run. Tied it up back in seventh. Seems like forever ago already. And Ricky B Ricky 0 for four with a walk and was caught stealing. Striking out. Guzman looking good in his second opportunity. In comes Joe Nathan’s hot dogs. All right. Oh, I wanted to mention this is a little late in the game to mention this, but today is uh Brainiac Baseball’s 5year anniversary on YouTube. I just got the notification uh when I woke up this morning. So, happy 5year anniversary to us. It’d be nice to get a win out of it. Doesn’t look like we’re going to get there though. Gyoki flies out. Another ground out for Dazzo. The game really has him in a tail spin. He’s going to be safe on an error. All that is doing is setting up the double play. No, won’t even get that far. Miguel Tahada. There we go. And then Giani to wrap it up right here. 54 A’s win. Okay. It’s going to simulate it out. Um RIP to uh Die Diego Sige. You may remember him from our Seattle Pilots uh um what if scenario that we were doing. We’re still doing it. It’s in hiatus right now. But uh Diego Sige passed away uh a few days ago. He was the first ever starting pitcher for the Seattle Pilots in their very first game and he was the very first starting pitcher for the Seattle Mariners in their first game. Uh, so he passed away uh earlier this week. RIP to him. Also, Hoskin Powell I saw had passed away. Former Minnesota Twin and Toronto Blue J. Um, waiting to see if there’s any trades here. It’s taking its sweet time. I don’t think we’re going to see any more trades anytime soon. Trade deadline coming up in about um five weeks. There we go. So, our losing our winning streak is over. Uh we lost uh today. So, that’s a done deal. And take a look at the standings there. Um the East is so interesting because they do not have a 40-game winning uh team yet and all those teams are so mediocre. We’ll take a look at the American League. Boston on top by two. Kansas City one and a half up on Cleveland. Who’s on Kansas City in 98? Oh, Johnny Damon, Jeff Conine, Mike Sweeney. That’s all good. Germaine Dye, and Dean Palmer. Those are great great 90s names. Um, and Mike McFarland at the end of his career. Okay. And who are their pitchers? Apier. That’s all they really had. Everybody else kind of sucks. Nobody else. Well, they’re getting it done. All right, let’s go ahead and take a look at the headline news. Brainiac baseball. Yeah. Okay. Miguel Tahad gets four hits and Hershiser is going to be gone for a month for the Giants. So, uh, the first place Giants suffering another big injury. Let’s look at transactions. What do we got here? Oh, we got a trade. Oh my gosh, we got so much going on. Okay, the Cardinals are trading Ray Langford to Boston for Juan Pñena and Jinho Cho, who I don’t remember. So, there’s Ray Langford only batting 220. Looks like he needs a change of scenery. Under contract through 2003, making some decent money. In return, Boston gives him Juan Pñena. Kind of a maybe a starting pitcher. He’s in single A and Jinho Cho. Oh, he’s a starting pitcher. Also mediocre. his first year of ball. All right, then we’ve got two milestones. On the same day, Barry Larkin and Chuck Knoblock both get their 300th steel. Huh. Larkin is on Atlanta in this sim. And then we’ve got a couple injuries. Chris Holt for Houston’s going to miss one start. Not a big deal. and Oral. Oops. He’s eight and one for the Giants. Is going to miss a month. Is that his second injury? Whoa. It’s his third injury this year already. All right. And we missed Chris Gomez in between there. Just a couple of days for the Padres’s hitting pretty solidly. And then a retirement. Chris Nicking of the Indians on this sim. I kind of remember him on Boston. He only played one year for Texas in our well so far in our sim, but that was way back in ’95. Okay, let’s go ahead and pull up the box score and get out of here. Thanks for watching, guys. Like and or subscribe to the channel. I mean, it was a we put up a fight, but this game was over before it ever started. Um when when uh Mike Hampton walks six batters and gives up four hits, then you know the game is already over. Um but it was a nice battle. We got two stolen bases. We had four extra base hits. Wasn’t enough. Wait, Bobby Higginson made an error. Oh, that’s what led to the loss. I didn’t even see that. That is his seventh outfield error of the year. Oh, the error allowed him to score from first. And that was an unearned run. That’s even cheaper. I mean, come on. I didn’t I didn’t see that. Well, it wouldn’t have showed us because it was the final play of the game, but I mean, that’s just not right. I hate this game when it does like that. That’s so stupid. Uh Joe Nathan gets the win. Guzman takes a loss. They also had four extra base hits, including two home runs at both times. Um, G tied the ball game up. All right, we’re going to come back tomorrow, play game three of the series, and then we’re done with Inner League play. Uh, at least on the road. All right, till next time, everyone. Have a great day.
