[Charania] BREAKING: San Antonio Spurs star De'Aaron Fox has agreed to a four-year, $229 million maximum contract extension with the franchise, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul told ESPN. The deal secures Fox's future in San Antonio through the 2029-30 season.

Update via Shams Instagram: The max deal has no player option in the final year and secures De'Aaron Fox's future in San Antonio through the 2029-30 season, after a trade deadline deal moved the one-time All-Star and one-time All-NBA guard from the Sacramento Kings to the Spurs.

Fox and Rich Paul were able to navigate a trade to his preferred destination of San Antonio in February and then secure this long-term lucrative extension months later.

Fox is just one of two players to average 20 points, 5 assists and 1 steal in each of the last six seasons, along with Luka Doncic, and he is just one of four players with 10,000 points, 3,000 assists and 700 steals since entering the NBA in 2017-18, along with James Harden, Russell Westbrook and Jokic.

  1. Why surround Wemby with spacing when you could have the 7’4 guy shoot 10 threes a game instead?

  2. Pairing the prospect of the decade with a non All Star PG reliant on speed 💔

  3. I get that they can do this because of the timing of their rookie contracts but it still seems like an enormous overpay.

  4. Yikes. That’s gonna be tough to move if they decide to go a different direction in the future.

  5. Damn Fox’s getting maxxed. I know it’s not the most unpredictable thing in the world but it’s a bit surprising still

  6. I’m really happy the Kings aren’t handcuffed by that contract. Fox is a nice player when he wants to be. The problem is he doesn’t play with intensity all 82.

  7. I would not have given that to him. Especially since I like the potential backcourt of Harper/Castle in the future.

  8. Barely minimum wage when you take into account taxes, agent fees, inflation, and tariffs

  9. That’s gonna be a bad contract by the end. Maybe it is now. But it is value in having a player Wemby can play with who can help him win now to get playoff experience

  10. As a sixers fan I know a thing or two about really bad contracts

This is a really bad contract

  11. 4 years?? Did Spurs atleast get a team option on that? I guess you kinda have to give him the max but if I’m Spurs I’d rather 2-3 years with a team option for maximum flexibility. Although they should be able to trade him easily enough when the time comes.

  12. Fox and AD making more money than Luka for the next 3 years, that’s so insane lol

  13. Good for him!!!! I do expect him to be difficult to move. I honestly think castle will be better than Fox sooner than people expect. With Harper as well.

  14. Paying a heavily speed-reliant, small guard 57 million into his early 30s. What could go wrong?

  15. I dont disagree that Fox isn’t worth that, but honestly if ur the spurs why not? You have so many rookies with promising futures and those big contracts aren’t gonna be a thing until this one is nearly over with.

  16. Man Rich Paul must be the best negotiator in management. I’ve seen many contracts from his clients that just look baffling on paper.

  17. This is why teams get too expensive, you can’t pay that much to a player that has achieve nothing, you should be able to get 2 players almost as good as him for that price.

Or the salary cap is too low for teams, or extensions like these don’t make sense.

  18. I totally understand why the Spurs had to do that. I also think it’s one of those contracts that’s basically a negative asset the moment it was signed. Paying someone who’s around the 30th best player in the league $55 mil/per year is brutal, especially under the current CBA.

Like I said, I get why the Spurs did it and they didn’t really have a choice. But it’s a reflection of how screwed up the NBA salary structure is that a max contracts include guys like Luka & Giannis AND guys like Fox. It’s stupid, and I don’t know how it can be fixed, but it needs to be fixed.

  19. Yall acting we didn’t have Tre Jones as the strater with no backup 13 months ago. Now we have Fox, Castle, and Harper. I’ll take that all day.

  20. This is fantastic for league parity. If they competently put a team around Wemby the league would be screwed.

  21. Fuck. Max salary or role player salary, but you can’t exactly pay the guy like a role player. I hate that there’s no middle ground for players at Fox’s level.

The max contract should be locked behind all-nba selections, and the supermax locked behind first-team all-nba selections

  22. It’ll be expiring by the time Harper is extension eligible. Fox was the best win-now PG on the market until then.
