Dolphins Make SNEAKY Signing + MAJOR Austin Jackson Injury Update | Miami Dolphins News
Second video of the day here at Dolph today by chat sports. I am your host Nick Rolloloff because we got some news. The Miami Dolphins made a sneaky signing and it’s a name that you may actually remember. Plus, we have a lot of injury updates to go through before this first week of the preseason against the Chicago Bears. Mainly on Austin Jackson. We’ll touch on Cam Smith as well as Eafatu Melofanu, but I mentioned it. It is the first week of the NFL preseason. They started off against the Chicago Bears on Sunday at 1 p.m. Eastern time. Are you excited for the first preseason game? I know I’m fired up and I can’t wait to be live on the channel hanging out with all y’all. If y’all are excited, type those me down in the comments. Let’s start with the sneaky signing that Miami made. It is a tight end fullback hybrid Chris Mrick who actually played for the Miami Dolphins in the past. This is his seventh season in the National Football League. He actually was an undrafted free agent in 2019 and he’s played a little bit for Miami in 2020. We’ll look more at his history here before, but there is a clear takeaway on this and it’s more or less on Alec Ingold. But before we get to Alec inold, do you remember Chris Mrick? Well, if you don’t, well, here is the update. He attended Temple University. He was a UDFA in 2019. Miami picked him up in undrafted for agency and stashed him on their practice squad and then signed him to a reserves future contract after the 2019 season. He was on the practice squad again in 2020, but actually appeared in four games, activated from the squad. Now, he bounced around, played a couple years for the New York Giants, but in 2024 was on the Texans and Jaguars practice squad. So, hasn’t got a lot of playing time on actual Sundays, but has still been inside the league. And in his career, he has appeared in 27 games, mostly when he has gotten snaps as a blocker. But due to his versatility as a blocker and a receiver, he did get a couple touchdowns in his career. He was prior or usually used inside the red zone. And that is where I really want to hone in here with Chris Mrick. He is a fullback tight end hybrid. He’s a massive human being. He is 6’5 261 or at least that is what he’s listed at. So he provides a lot and we know Miami when they look at tight ends really try to get guys that can block. They believe that with Frell Brown. They believe that with Julian Hill. They already have a fullback tight end hybrid on the 90man offseason roster in the form of former UDFA in 2024 Hayden Ruchcci. But they add another one. Why is that? Well, it’s because of Alec Ingold’s injury. If you were not aware, on Sunday morning, August 3rd’s practice, Ingold went down and a lot of the players, it would looked like a scary injury, went down on one knee, huddled around him. Now, he eventually got up and walked off the field under his own power. So, it wasn’t like it was a soft tissue injury like an Achilles, like an ACL. And it was announced later that day on Sunday that Alec Ingold is in concussion protocol. So, good news on Inold, but we know Miami really likes to utilize in gold in the rushing game, in the passing game, and especially inside the red zone. So, in order for them to keep up those same type of tendencies and formations, they just need to add another tight end fullback hybrid. So, I would expect Chris Mrick to take the role of Alec in gold in some of these preseason games, in some of these practices. I would also expect to see Hayden Ruchcci do some of that as well as we briefly mentioned a second ago. So with in gold out for one maybe two weeks, play it safe, keep him out two weeks. He does not need to get reps in the preseason. I would expect to see a lot of Chris Mrick and Hayden Ruchcci playing that in gold role. And this is why you subscribe to the channel by the way because no matter how small the Dolphins news is, we will cover it. Miami made a couple moves over the weekend with signings, with extensions. We had you covered then as well. So, if you want top-notch Miami Dolphins coverage, join the channel today. Let’s segue over to another injured player, not Alec Engold, but actually Austin Jackson, because this came out over the weekend, and it made me a little nervous. Now, I do feel a little bit better about it now, but Cameron Wolf had the report that Dolphins escape an injury scare for key pass rusher Jaylen Phillips on the practice Saturday. Phillips did go down, but he also tweeted out and said he just got whipped by another leg and it’s just a bruise. He’ll be fine. Thank goodness. But the part we’re showcasing here is Austin Jackson as Wolf was told that he will miss multiple weeks here in the month of August with a lower body injury. But the hope is that he will be back and ready to roll for the week one game against the Indianapolis Colts. And it does sound like he will be ready to go for that week one game. Mike McDaniel was asked about it before practice on Sunday and he said that Austin Jackson has nothing to do with anything about missing into the regular season and it doesn’t seem to be in that time frame which is really positive for Miami. I mean it’s not great that Austin Jackson is already banged up. It’s not clear what the injury is. And in the preseason you do not have to disclose the injury. when we get to the regular season, they do have to give you timets and what the actual injury is. You don’t have to do that now, but man, it’s such a good thing that he is at least anticipated to be ready to roll for that game against the Colts because I have often said that Austin Jackson is one of the most important players on this offensive line. I would label Patrick Paul as probably the most crucial and pivotal this year, but I would put Austin Jackson probably in that 1B to Paul’s 1A or at least number two because with Jackson and with Miami, he is essentially your left tackle. What do I mean by that? Well, Tua Tongavaloa, your QB1, is a left-hander. I don’t think I’m breaking any news with that. But with lefty quarterbacks, their blind side is that right tackle, which means he is basically playing the role as that normal left tackles do for other football teams. And this is where he’s found his home. Remember, he was drafted in the first round out of USC, was meant to play left tackle, really struggled there as a rookie, then moved to left guard in his second year, and they’re like, “All right, we’re going to try you at right tackle now.” Got hurt in 2022. He basically missed the entire year, but then had his best season of his career in 2023, protecting to his blind side, where Tua also played all 17 games, by the way. Got an extension, and then 2024 got a knee injury that ended his season following the week nine game against the Buffalo Bills. Like, you need this guy to stay healthy. This is one of your most important players on the offensive line. So, maybe the Dolphins are just overreacting to this injury to Austin Jackson. knowing that he’s a little bit banged up on his lower half. And it’s just like, all right, take an extra three week or three days, extra week to just allow your body to recover to the max possible it could in order for you to be a 100% healthy for the start of the regular season because Miami needs to start the year off hot with a relatively easy schedule in the month of September where you play the Colts, Patriots, Bills, and Jets. I’ve talked about it. If Miami wants to make the playoffs, you probably got to go three and one in the first month of the year. You got to beat the Colts. You got to beat the Patriots at home. And you got to beat the Jets at home. If you lose to the Bills on the road on Thursday Night Football, cool. But you got to win those other three games. And I don’t know if they would be able to win all those three games without Austin Jackson on the football field. So, let’s hope that he’s going to be ready to roll week one, which it sounds like he is. But the Dolphins did make a signing on Sunday morning in the f in the form of Germaine Aphiti, the longtime veteran offensive tackle who has started a lot of games for a lot of different teams, most notably with the Seattle Seahawks. That’s where he started his career. He is a right tackle, so this is maybe just some insurance. I’m not sure if Aiti will ultimately make the 53man roster. It’s certainly possible that he could be a backup swing tackle for Miami due to the experience he has, but he is likely going to be probably your starting right tackle going forward with Austin Jackson sideline during training camp. So, we’ll keep our eye on that. But Aiti added to the roster on Sunday. Not a bad depth offensive lineman to have on this roster. But make sure you grab your Dolphins jerseys. Why? More Dolphins injury updates to come here and we’re going to particularly look to the secondary with Cam Smith in efatu melon. And we will start with Cam Smith because my goodness, here we go again. This is the third year Cam Smith is in the National Football League. 2023 second round pick out of South Carolina. And once again, we have to deal with an injury. He didn’t play his rookie season. could never find traction with defensive coordinator Vic Vanio at the time. In 2024, you hope to have him as your third corner, at least as a boundary guy behind Kendall Fuller and Jaylen Ramsay. He gets hurt, misses the first four or five games of the season, returns, was absolutely abysmal to the point where he gets released or not released, excuse me, benched by Storm Duck. The Dolphins organization challenged him to stay healthy and be able to be ready to roll this summer. He’s injured and he’s missing time. I just think the experiment has to end unfortunately. And Brian Dooker, the secondary coach in Miami, was asked about Cam Smith earlier today and he said, “Yeah, we obviously want him out there and be able to stack reps. It’s a missed opportunity, but it’s also an opportunity for somebody else to take advantage of those as well. Trying to be able to be durable and avoid the injuries. He’s got to consistently put that on tape. It’s something he’s still working through. And if we’re going to be just straight up here, I know it’s hard to give up on a second round pick in their third year, but this guy just simply can’t be rostered. I’m sorry. He was absolutely horrific last year and I’ll never forgive him for how bad he played against the Arizona Cardinals last season because if we’re being real, Dolphins win that game, they probably have a chance to win the final game of the season and make the playoffs with 10 wins. in the Dolphins defense blew a double- digit lead in the fourth quarter at home against the Cardinals. Why? Because Jordan Puyer couldn’t defend Trey McBride of his life dependent on it. And Cam Smith also gave up over 100 yards himself in that game. And when you look at what Miami has on this depth chart, it’s hard for me to justify keeping him around for another season. If you just took Cam Smith’s draft value out of the equation and just in a vacuum, these players are on your roster with no knowledge of where they were drafted, no knowledge of what they have done in their past. There is no world where Cam Smith makes this roster because Storm Duck, Jack Jones, and Mike Hilton are your projected starters. But when you look at what has transpired in training camp to this point, Kendall Sheffield has been way better than Cam Smith, and he’s been available on a daily basis for the most part, missing just one practice. Jason Marshall Jr. has shown some promise as a fifth round pick out of Florida this past draft. And if you’re looking towards the cornerback room and you’re projecting what it would be on the 53man roster in late August, this is probably where I would land on August 4th. Storm Duck, Jack Jones, and Mike Hilton are your guaranteed players. Those are my three starters at this point. I think Jason Marshall Jr. is probably a lock as well due to him being a fifth round rookie. I know I just said you could take away draft value, but that was specifically just for the one scenario. And with Kendall Sheffield playing so well, I would put him on this 53man roster. And then the sixth corner that I would like to keep would be an NFL free agent. Whether it’s for Su Douglas, Asante Samuel Jr., Stefan Gilmore, it doesn’t matter. add an NFL free agent, keep the other five, and it’s a relatively fine cornerback room for what you have at least in the beginning of August. The point is Cam Smith is not reliable on the football field. He can’t stay healthy and I am sick and tired of giving him multiple opportunities to prove himself. He has proven he can’t stay on the field. He has proven that he is not good enough to be a starting corner in the National Football League. So, cut bait, wipe your hands clean, and move on. Do you agree with me though? What say you? Should the Dolphins cut Cam Smith? I am firmly in the position of yes. I’m typing my C’s for cut. Do you want to keep them though? You could type your K’s. Let me know your thoughts in the comments. Final player we’ll touch on here with injury news. It’s Ephetu Malafanu. And it’s a positive one. We haven’t had a lot of positive updates on this show with the injuries to Cam Smith and Austin Jackson, but Melanu was finally activated off the non-foot injury list this past weekend. He had his first official practice with the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, August 3rd. And this is such a good thing to see because Miami unfortunately got hit with an injury at safety with Ashen Davis. Now, it is not a season ender. That’s what Mike McDaniels said. And without and with Miami not really adding another veteran safety to this point in the off season in training camp, I doubt that Davis is going to be out for more than half of the year. Maybe I’m going a little bit too quick with that assumption. But Melanu certainly with Ashen Davis’s injury projects as that starting safety opposite of Ma Fitzpatrick. I would be shocked if Dante Trader Jr. as a rookie since he’s missed time would be able to seize that role. I doubt Patrick McMorris would be able to grab it. And even though I’m bullish on Elijah Campbell and his versatility with special teams and in the secondary, I doubt he’ll be a starter. So, with the entire month of August to go and Melanu finally getting to practice every single day, I think he’s going to do enough in this next month and in the preseason to solidify himself as the starter opposite of Minka Fitzpatrick. And he hasn’t got a lot of opportunities in the past. He’s been a rotational third, fourth safety in his career to this point for the Detroit Lions, but coming out of college, he was known as a very rangy, athletic safety and versatile defensive back who can play a little bit of the nickel. And that’s his specialty. It’s really coverage. He’s not one of those thumping safeties that can really attack in the run game and get down in the box and play physical. That’s not his style. So maybe Mick Fitzpatrick will have to play more of that role this upcoming year if Melanu is the other starter and you kind of just put Yatu as that free safety ranging speedy guy in center field but with the versatility to maybe line up in the nickel at times as well. I think he has the chance to be an impact player for Miami. I remember when the Dolphins originally signed these two safeties, Melanu and Ashen Davis in the first two, three days of free agency in early March, I was a lot more excited about the addition of Melanu. Now, over the off season, I came around on Ashen Davis and actually projected him to be the starter alongside Fitzpatrick, but with that injury, it now points to Melofanu being that guy. So, I can’t wait to see what he can do in some of these joint practices against Chicago, his old team Detroit next week in Jacksonville in the third week of the preseason and see him play some live reps as well in these three preseason games because he’ll need to play in order to solidify himself and cement himself as that other starter safety when the Dolphins trot out against the Colts in NFL week one. Guess they’re desperate for a TE…
Grier has no clue how to pick players. Never does he judge if the players are smart enough to play. He makes the same mistake over and over, kind of like the players he often picks. No ability to learn from the past mistakes.
Never pick dumb players just because they can run fast and jump high but always out of position to make a play.
Not impressed with the latest TE signing…. CUT CAM SMITH, HES A BUST!!!! INJURY PRONE… 😵💫🤮

A worse case he will miss the colts game and thats not a bad thing cause I would like to see us whip the colts without needing certain key starters, so the young guys can get some more time to start reg season, and then we go full strength (much as possible) for home opener
Jackson in 5 years has played in 56 games out of a possible 84.
He’s missed a season and more than a half in his career.
Injury prone, and mid at best for a first round pick.. thanks Chris Grier
I’m so exited I just can’t hide it…
YES CUT HIM!!!!
Why so many injuries? Must look at the strength and conditioning coach

Who the F is Myrick screw him
Hey Nic, since you are spot on with Cam Smith, you might want to also share with everyone that Tyrique Stevenson, a home grown Cornerback out of Dade that played at both Miami and Georgia, he went #56 overall to the Bears in the same draft where Grier takes Smith #50 overall…how does Grier still have a job? That man has been with the Miami Dolphins 20 years in a variety of roles and they haven't won a single playoff game or made many post season trips…when are you going to start the drum beat on this?
