MLB LIVE🔴 Houston Astros vs Miami Marlins – Aug 4, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
with my partner Chris Singleton. I’m John Shami. The first half of the All-Star break is behind us and partner, it’s go time in the second half. And if you want to be playing meaningful games at the end of September, you got to put your head down and grind for the next eight weeks. It’s the Houston Astros taking on the Miami Marlins. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. So, almost ready to get underway. And today’s starter, Tyler Phillips. And for some reason, he’s not quite as effective here in front of his home crowd, Chris. Yeah, Boo. And the fans are well aware of that. For him, he’s got to just not press and go out there and say, “Hey, I’m just treating this like any start. home, on the road, it doesn’t matter. My job is to focus on that catcher mitt, attack hitters, and just try to move through a ball game. So, if he can find that kind of focus, doesn’t matter where he’s pitching because he has good enough stuff to go out there and win a ball game. And a foul ball. The 01 fouled off. He was late. misses. It’s a strike out. And now the catcher comes up to here. missed. One down. Base is empty. And that misses. And that’s ball two. And that one is inside. That’s a walk. Went with another change up but missed the spot. That just came apart right there. Four pitch walk and guy at the plate was not going to help him out by swinging at something out of the zone. And now it’s Christian Walker. He’s been tearing it up at the plate recently. Batting over 300 so far this month. Oh, and one. Yeah, that’s fouled off. One ball, two strikes. Rarely will you see a pitcher just to waste a pitch like that. The batter wasn’t even tempted to swing. Every pitch needs to have a purpose so that it can set up a following pitch to help you get that out. That one down the line and it goes just foul. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. In the dirt. Two and two. Well, with the amount of pitches that can end up in the dirt, a good secondary lead doesn’t have to get away from the catcher, but if you’re anticipating based off the trajectory, get yourself into scoring position. Battling here as he fouls it away. Eighth pitch of the bat coming up. and a swing and a miss. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. Well, getting a good look at the pitcher here in the first inning isn’t a bad thing. I know he struck out, but you can live with that as long as the other hitters in this lineup can learn something from it. Now, it’s going to be Cam Smith. That one hit to right. Sanchez drifts towards it, nabs it, and that is that. So, the Astros leave one and now the Marlins will have a crack at things. No score. Back after this on the show. Back here in Lone Depot Park. And starting this one, Jason Alexander. And Chris, he’s a guy that gets better when things get tough. Well, he’s been a real quality starter for his club. But coming into this one, what stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year. It seems that they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone. So, we’ll see how right-handers do against him in this one. And he lays down a bunt throw off line. He’s safe and a nice job there to keep it from getting away. This was the perfect spot to drop the bunt for a hit. I mean, he used his bat as a tool up there to direct the ball exactly where he wanted it to go and look smooth doing it at the same time. Really well done. And the defense right there stood no chance. And now for the Marlins, Jesus Sanchez. Slider right there. One’s the count. Nobody out. Runner at first. Let’s go Miami. Ground ball left side could be two to second for one. Back to first and that is a double play. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. Ramirez. And here’s the rookie catcher, Augustine Ramirez. And that’s outside. Two out. Base is empty. Right side. And foul ball. Ball two. Two balls. One strike. There’s the strike of the knees. Good eye right there. I don’t know how you take that one after the called strike on the corner. Just a little bit off the edge to the right side. Altuveet handles it. The throw to first and that is the third out of the inning. Nothing doing for the Marlins. Scoreless after one. All set for the start of the inning. Vic Keratini at the plate. 17 Victor Keratini. Phillips back to work and that’s in for a strike. And ball one assigned to home plate duty is Ricky Holiday. Boo. And something I’ve heard players saying about Ricky strike zone is how he will call the high strike. That could be something that’s tough to deal with, especially if you’ve got a pitcher out there coming at you with high velocity. Next offering is in for a strike. Chris, do players ever change their approach in meaningful ways based on who’s umpiring or is it good to just be aware of tendencies so you’re not that surprised? I’d say the latter because pitcher’s got to pitch to his strengths regardless. The hitters got a hit to his. Ah, that hit him. And the leadoff man is aboard to start the inning. Here’s Mauricio Dubon. And there’s a base hit to left. Lead runner holds up. They’re at first and second with nobody out. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. Just a solid swing right there. caught it out front and ripped it into the outfield for the base hit. Those always feel great. Runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game. Cooper Hmel up next for the Astros. First pitch just misses. Inside just missed. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. First and second, no outs here in the top of the second. Out towards right center field. Sanchez ranging after it. Pulls it in. One away. So digging in Chaz Mccormack. This kid a 21st round pick out of Millersville University in Pennsylvania. First pitch misses. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. And that one fouled off. Two on, one out. Oh, that’s out. Second inning here. No score. Still two and two after the foul ball. Laser base hit. Keratini rounds third headed for the plate. The throw is offline and he’s in to score and it’s one- nothing. A perfect example right there. That plate discipline. It pays off. The deeper he gets into account, the more comfortable he becomes and he usually wins the battle. Two on, one out at the plate. Zack Short pitch misses and it’s one and0. First and third, one down. Late swing fouled off and a swing and a miss. Big pitch right here. He’s going to try to make a pitch. It’s going to produce a strikeout or a ground ball double play. on a line. Base hit in comes the runner from third and it’s an RBI single and they take a two-run lead. Comes through with the RBI. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages working on going to the opposite field and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did. And he did it perfectly. So, the lineup flips over. Here’s the former MVP, Jose Altuve. And that one just misses a ball and no strikes. Altuve officially joined the 2000 hit club in 2023 with every career hit as a Houston Astro. third player in club history with 2,000 hits and 200 home runs. Jeff Bagwell, Craig Bio, those are the two others. And that’s some great company, Boo. The one-1 got the back going too soon. It’s strike two. Great spot to be in right here for the pitcher. You can either strike this guy out, get ground ball, double play. McCormick on third. Short at first, one gone. Fouls it back with two strikes. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Two count in the dirt. No advance. Good job behind the dish. In the dirt. Runners hold tight, but it’s a full count now. Ninth pitch of the at bat do next. foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch and they’re all loaded up. When you go that deep into an at bat, the hitter usually comes out on top. The catcher at the plate is the Astros catcher, Yiner Diaz. Walked his first time. Just missed. Next offering in there for a strike and a count even one and one. Base is loaded. One away. And that one gets past the catcher. Runners stay put and the count moves to two and one. on the ground. Could be two. Quickly to second for one. Double play. What a quick killing day to end the inning. But two runs for him and they jump ahead now to the bottom of the second. It’s the Astros two and the Marlins nothing. Back here in Miami leading off Kyle Stard and singing we already know he’s going to finish the season with a new careerhigh in home runs. That one is absolutely belted. Going back, leaps at the wall, but can’t hold it in. Safe at second with a leadoff double. Well, clearly he was ready to hit right there. Anytime you smoke a ball off the wall, you kind of think about what it could have been, but obviously you have to be happy with that result. Runner in scoring position. No outs. And up next for Miami, Otto Lopez edge of the zone for a strike. 0 and one. kicks and fires with a short stop. Takes a ball up the middle and he knocks it down. Gets it there in time though. He keeps his composure and they get the out. That was pretty right there. Beautiful play with Johnston. Troy Johnston the next up for the Marlins. That’s a little bit low. That one’s in there and it’s a ball and a strike. One out and a runner at second. Bottom half of inning number two. on the ground right side. Altuve slings to first in time. This lineup’s going to have to find a way to make him work a little harder out there on the mound. I mean, he is just mowing him down. He’s settling in. You got to make him uncomfortable. Maybe step out of the box, call timeout, do whatever it takes. And now Hernandez. And that’s him for a strike. It’s 0 and one. up the middle. Base hit and a run in to score. Well done. Drives in the run. He kind of muscled that one out there. Didn’t get the barrel with it, but the important part was that he found a way to stay through the baseball and just drop it into center field. Here’s the rookie third baseman, Graham Paulie and right back to the mound. Sends it to first. Inning over, but they pick up one run on the RBI single and this is now a 2-1 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show and welcome back to the ballpark. Out of the third inning. So now the Astros designated hitter, Christian Walker. First pitch and he just misses. Though Chris, through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. This one swung on and hit well way back there. It bangs off the wall into second easily with a leadoff double. A late jump. And I think that was the difference on the play. It’s not always easy seeing the ball off the bat. It’s something to improve. Runner in scoring position, no outs. And stepping in for the Astros, Cam Smith flyed to right his first time. Swinging a foul out of play. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens. Miami’s bullpen with some action number 66 getting ready to go. Bezo the right-hander also getting loose. Runner at second. Nobody out. Next offering is outside. Ground ball up the middle. Up the middle and he knocks it down. Still able to get it there in time. And they come away with an out after a tricky start to the play. Keratini. Victor Keratini up next for the Astros. Fly ball to the outfield for a sack fly. soft ground ball to the right side, find a hole. He can attack this a few ways, but the one thing he can’t do is strike out. And a foul ball. Walker stands at third with one gone in the inning. That’s squirts away a little bit. Nice job behind the plate there. Swing and a tapper then rolls foul. Come on, punch him out in the dirt. Nice job behind the plate. Two-2 now and that just misses. Really good take especially with two strikes. Hit on the ground to the right side. Edwards over to first. Roer scores though. That’s a little insurance and the lead is two. Oh, there it is. A little old school manufacturing of a run after that double. Ground out to get him over and another ground out to get him in. Nice job to get that RBI. Now the Marlins manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. Tyler Phillips gives way. Not what they were hoping for from the opener. So we’ll see a new arm on the mound when we get back. Now pitching forward. New pitcher on now. Number 66. Pretty tight game. So they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. And here is Mauricio Dubon one for one with a single and a run scored so far. First pitch and that’s in for a strike. Dubon batting sixth in today’s lineup and he was born in Honduras. Next offering is down low. That one ripped right center field. A dive and he can’t haul it in. And that’s a two out double. Wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. Cooper Hmel will hit next. He’s 0 for one. Just missed. All one. No strikes. Runner at second, two down. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. Fouled off down the right side in the air to left center. Meyers gets under it and that’s the third out. One run, a pair of hits, no errors, and one left on. We head now to the home half of inning number three. It’s the Astros three, and the Marlins won. And we’re back in for the bottom of the third. And at the plate for Miami, Dane Meyers. Meers. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Liner base hit. Had a good start to the inning. That pretty much split the zone down the middle. And those are the ones where you got to make them pay. Edward. So the batting order turns over. Xavier Edwards the next up for the Marlins. Runner on the go. Line drive takes it in for the out. Throw behind the runner. They’ve got him doubled off. The right fielder number seven Jesus. And now for the Marlins. Jesus Sanchez. He hit into a double play his first time up. Here’s a rocket out to left. That is the inning. No runs, one hit, no errors, and no one left. On to inning number four. It’s the Astros three and the Marlins won. Back here at Lone Depot Park, John Shami with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Chaz McCormick. Let’s go Marlins. And first offering is fouled off. He’s one of those Dave Mccardi, Mark Carry on, Ricky Henderson types. Throw left. Oh, that pitch right. You make a note of those guys cuz it’s just different. It’s like, man, you’re left-handed, but you hit right-handed. Fast ball on the inside corner for a strike. Ripped to short. Leadoff hitter retired in the fourth. Up next for the Astros, the shortstop, Zack Shorts. Now it’s Zack Short. RBI single his last time up. That one inside. Ball one. One out. Base is empty. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And now two and 0. And that drops him for a strike. Nasty two slider there for a strike. That tells you he’s got a lot of confidence in that pitch. And there’s a fly ball deep right field. That one’s back there onto the track and he makes the catch. Now that the second base, so the Houston lineup turns over. Jose Altuve up to hit here. He is struck out and he is walked. Swing and a miss as he was late that time. One just a bit tardy there. Not sure if he had a hard time picking it up out of the hand or if he was sitting off speed. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. just misses with that one. And they’ll do it again. That misses the zone and it’s two and two. Well, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where a pitch would rather just give up a first pitch single than to have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. Two down and a foul ball. He stays alive. He wanted that fast ball high and tight looking for a strikeout. Just didn’t locate it very well. swings and miss has struck him out. Astros are down quietly and the score stays three to one. Ready to go. And here’s the catcher Ramirez. from Virg and that one fouled off. You know, these Marlins as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see, but I think they have to. And there’s a hit. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Here’s the cleanup hitter for Miami, Kyle. A double and a run scored his first time on it and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Ramirez on at first. Nobody out. Swanging a ground ball and that one finds its way through. Throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Couple of singles back to back. Really nice job staying up with his approach. He didn’t try to do too much with the pitch. Just shot it through the infield. Lopez. Now it’s the short stop. Otto Lopez grounded out his first time. Late swing fouled all kick swing. Now a look down to first. No swing. Just held it back there. Tying run is at first. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. rolled to short. Could be two over to Altuve. Throw to first, but he beat it. Well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Now, here is Troy Johnston grounded out his first time. Downing ball here. Rolls. Foul. That misses the zone and it’s one and one. Runners are at the corners. One away. No inside. It’s a big opportunity right here, but I love the way he’s slowing the game down. and he’s shrinking his zone, making sure he gets the pitch that he wants to hit. Tap foul at the plate. I think ultimately you want to tie him up, get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield. That’s inside. Ariberto Hernandez in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here on the ground to first. Could be two. Fires to second for one. Return throw to first. Got him. Double play. And that’ll do it. So no runs on two base hits. No errors and one left. We’ve played four. It’s the Astros three and the Marlins one. We’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth. Jansen jump. He doesn’t get a lot of strikeouts compared to other relievers, so he relies on getting that soft contact and the defense doing the work behind him. They’ll have to be on their toes with him on the ball. At the plate is the Astros catcher Diaz. Diaz just missed. Well, these Astros digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. They’ve hit seven line drives already. And even though some of them have been for outs, there’s nothing wrong with delivering consistent hard contact. That’s almost always going to lead to positive results. That one misses and now three and 0. In there for a strike at the top of the zone. Next offering is fouled back. right back to him on the mound. Tosses to first. One away here in the fifth. That’s what a good sinker is designed to do. Get a guy to roll over a little bit, hit the ball on the ground, kill some worms while you’re at it. Christian Walker up next for the Astros. One for two. Right through there for a strike. There it was. Oh, here it is. Hit it. He gets a take. Gets ahead in the count. Swings here and blasts one left field and it’s a one hopper off the wall. Should be extra bases. Cut off. Throw to second. Not going to get him. He’s in there. He has had such a good day today. I don’t think he’s going to want to leave when it’s over. Couple of doubles today for the DH. Cam Smith up next for the Astros. Bowl for two in this one. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Runner at second here. One gone. And another ballistic out. Fly ball down the line. Hernandez on the move. He’s got it. There’s two away. The first baseman number 17, Victor. So, next up for Houston, Victor Keratini. Let’s go. And that’s off the inside edge. And that’s ball one. And there’s a strike to the outside corner. Back door him with a breaking ball. Just got the corner. There’s nothing you can really do with that. Inside all on the ground to first. Third out. That ends the frame. a double in the inning, but they leave him stranded. Home half of the fifth coming up, it’s the Astros three and the Marlins one. Back here in Miami, here’s the left fielder, Arberto Hernandez. Hernandez. Alexander back to work. Wrapped out to center field. That’s well struck. That’s back there. That’s long gone. It’s his sixth home run of the season. It’s 32. He only needed one swing to square it up. Not wasting any time and that is bad move. Aggressive and it paid off. With a low 90s fast ball, you have to live on the edges and hit your spots. If you don’t, you’ll get hit hard. Really good swing there. Patient, waited for it. It was like BP all over again. Graham Paulie the next up for the Marlins. That one outside. That’s ball one. Always exciting to see a laid-off home run in an inning. Kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning on the ground right side. Altuve slings to first. One away. That ground ball may have him back on track after the homer. the center fielder. Yay. And now the center fielder, Dane Meyers, one for one with a single so far. The bit behind with that swing. It’s strike one. One out. Base is empty and a run in. Last half of inning number five. flares it into the outfield and foul ball. Next offering way off the plate. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. Back to the top of the lineup. Xavier Edwards gets a chance to hit here. Edwards swang and a miss. There’s the change up. Change up right there. Just pulled the string. And a ground ball to first. And that one handled. He takes it himself to the bag. And that’ll do it. One for the Marlins on the solo shot. It’s now a 32 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. And welcome back to the ballpark. All right, we go to the top half of inning number six. Here’s the third baseman, Mauricio Dubon. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Junk. A righty that throws with power. He features a four seam fast, a sinker, a slider, a slur, and he occasionally uses a curve. That one hooked foul. That misses the zone and it’s two and two. Two two in the count up the middle and a base hit right there. Just kind of sliced that one into center. Oh, this has been a really nice game at the plate for him. He looks locked in. Everything was on time and fluid in that swing. Got a pitch he could get the barrel on and lined it into center for the knock. Those always feel good. Cooper Hmel up next for the Astros on the corner for a strike. Dubong gets his lead at first with nobody out. Let’s get the easy two now. Let’s go. Fast ball for a strike and it’s nothing in two. No ball, two strikes. Oh, and he hit him. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. Here’s the center fielder, Chaz McCormick. Chaz McCormick right through there for a strike. This is an opportunity to do some damage, but you’ve got to be selective. Make sure you get a pitch that you can handle. The 01 is outside and it’s a ball and a strike way high. First and second, no outs. And we’re the top half of the sixth. Swing and a miss. in that strike two and a swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball. Came inside with that two strike fast ball nicely and just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate. Couldn’t get around on it and catch it out front. Many times if you do, it’s a foul ball. And you know, a lot of pitchers, they really don’t like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter. And when they’ve got him up against the ropes, got to figure out a way to put him away. Did a nice job right there. And now here is Zack Short. The short stop takes the ball. Two on, one out. Paul, that pitch is out. Now he can’t squeeze it behind the plate, but no advance from the runners. Out to center. Meyers sizing this one up. He’s got it. And there’s two away. Here’s the second base, Jose Altuve. A walk and a pair of strikeouts. That one’s in there. 0 and one. And I know you want to be patient as a hitter, but you got to be ready to jump on the first thing straight. And he got one right there. but left the bat on his shoulder. And that’s a little bit high and it’s one and two. Homeplayed umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. Swing and a fly ball in the air out towards right center field and it falls. The run comes in to score from second and it’s an RBI single and it’s 42. Really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat. I don’t know how he’s able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on it. That pitch was inside and he let it get really deep. So pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good wood on it. Yer Diaz up next for the Astros. There’s the strike. First and second, two down. That one misses. And now it’s even. One and one. Out to short. Lopez. They get the force that ends the inning and they limit the damage. But the RBI single pushes across a run. It’s now 42. You’re dialed into the show. Back now for the bottom of the sixth. And there’s a new pitcher on the mound. From Valdez. The offense will need to be ready for the breaking stuff. He’s got a great curveball. Valdez. And at the plate for Miami, Jesus Sanchez, the rightiel Sanchez and that clips the inside corner. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Brian Abrau, the hardthrowing righty is up and loosening. Susa also getting ready. Now the one ground ball right side and foul ball. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. One ball, two straight. Gets a piece and stays alive. Oh, he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. He’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit. try to move it around. Create just a little bit of illusion at the end. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. Well struck right field and it’s out of here into the home bullpen for a homer. his second homer this series. It’s 4-3. He kept swinging and it paid off. Well, that was a battle. Boo again. He just kept taking his cuts. Finally squared one off. That was one of those home runs where you really don’t know if he got enough of it off the bat. I mean, he put a good swing on it clearly, but I wouldn’t say he really got the sweet spot on the bat. The exit below wasn’t anything too impressive, but it had all it needed for him to circle the pillows. Ramirez up to bat next. Lays off for a ball. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in here in the bottom of the six. And another ball. to third and it’s just fouled. That was close. That one missed. These first two hitters really making them work out there. Already 14 pitches this inning. drive. That’s a base hit. Showed some really nice patience in that. Worked himself into a good count. So much of good hitting is finding holes in the defense. That’s why you’re always thinking line drive into the gap. Those kinds of swings really boost your confidence. And here is Kyle Sters. Hit hard should be extra bases runner around third on his way to the plate. Tag and he’s out at the plate. A lot of real estate to cover on that play defensively on a long throw to the cut off man and then a lot of ground to make up as well on the relay. But an excellent job of execution and getting that out at the dish as he tried to make it home all the way from first base. Otto Lopez the next to hit. That clips the corner. and that is downstairs and that is ball one. The shorts stop takes the ball. He’s getting a little frustrated out there on the mound getting hit around a little bit. Let’s see if he can settle himself down. man at second. That one’s in there. That’s strike two. I got two. Grounds one to short. short to first and he beats it. Everyone’s safe. Now batting the first baseman, Troy. First and second, one out. And up next for Miami, Troy Johnston. He’s looking for a ground ball to get a double play and out of this jam. Way to lay off that pitch down on the ground to second. Might be two. Not in time. He’s safe. Well, that at bat had a lot of pressure riding on it. So, really great job coming through right there. It’s got to feel good. Tying runs now just 90 ft away. Just got to be wary of that double play though. That would strand him and in the inning. And the batter now, Ariberto Hernandez, and takes low from ball one. And that chops in for a strike. I got a ball. One strike. Next offering misses down and away. In situations like these, the air can get really thin up there at the plate. Got to find a way to breathe and slow everything down. Really been able to slow down the game tonight with his at bats and the biggest one he’s had so far. He doesn’t look anxious at all. Liner caught at second. That at bat is a positive sign even though it probably doesn’t feel like it. hit the ball hard, but it doesn’t always work out in your favor. Sometimes a defender is there to make a play. Now a chance for Graham Paulie. He’s grounded out a couple of times just off the outside edge. And that is out of play. Not close with that one. Now two balls in a strike. So they’re all loaded up with two outs. And fouled off. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. Got him. Huge strike out there. Well, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job of getting out of the jam. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Anthony Bender. And he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. Anthony Bender. Well, one run game. And now the DH Christian Walker. Walker. Strike one. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Lake Backer, the rookie right-hander, is getting loose. Gibson also throwing. Here comes the one. No need to offer that pitch until you get to two strikes. It’s just a low percentage of success when you want to try to go after that down and away pitch. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. Here’s the O2. Spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Strike three. Went back to the sweeper and got the strike out. Up next for the next will be the cleanup hitter Cam Smith. 0 for three with two fly outs and a ground out. Just miss the plate. Base is empty. One away here in the top half of inning number seven. Outside and the count is 2 and0. He’s clearly trying to work him away here. Both pitches off the plate. If you really want to put the ball in play, you’re going to have to stay back and drive it to the opposite field. And that one inside and it hit him. And next to him for Houston, Victor Keratini. Victor Keratini. This one in the air. Johnston under this one. He’s got it. And there’s two away. got the pitch that he wanted just a little bit quick. Front shoulder open, backside collapsed a little bit and the launch angle not where he needed it to be. And stepping in for the Astros, Mauricio Dubon, three for three with two singles and a double edge in the zone. Call the strike and it’s 0 and one, man. I mean, nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. And now the count is even. I got one ball, one strike. Finds his way through base hit. And now first and second with two outs. He was all over that one. Just a simple ground ball the other way that had eyes on it, man. Sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel, put the ball in play, and just hope it finds a hole. First and second, two outs. Cooper Hmel up next for the Astros. There’s the strike. 95 of that one. One’s the count. Check swing called strike. No balls, two strikes. Oh, that’s okay. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. really think the outer half is open. Two on, two outs in the dirt. Blocked. Count moves to two and two as the runners hold. Two outs. And the sweeper is off the plate. At this point in the game, you cannot issue free passes. He’s going to have to challenge this hitter. Hitter’s got to be ready to swing it. Chaz McCorman up next for the Astros. And that’ll load the bases. Oh, this is their chance to break it open. And if they don’t end up winning this ball game, they’re going to look back at this opportunity right here and have some regret. Two outs, bases full, and now the center fielder, Chaz McCormick, and the first pitch misses for ball one. Well, he’s already in some trouble, and falling behind in the count makes it even worse. Then you’ve got to throw the ball over more of the plate, and that’s where they can really do damage against a guy like this. And a count one and two. Smith the runner at third. Dubong on second. Pummel out at first with two down. On the ground out to short. sends it across the first out to escape a bases loaded jam unsc. So they get out of the bases loaded jam without any damage and that does it for the inning. Midway in inning number seven and it’s time to stretch. It’s the Astros four and the Marlins three. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Bennett Susa coming on to face a righty here and he’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers in those matchups are very good. And now for the Marlins, Danny Meyers, the center fielder, Dave Meyers. The pitch bounced and that got the pitcher saved at first. And now after the play, we’ll check in on the lefty status. Now batting now hustle out to check on him. That was quite a shot he took as you see him down on the knee. Yeah, clearly in some real pain, but he will not want to come out of this game if he doesn’t have to. It’s looking to me like he’s going to try to shake it off and continue. Back to the top of the order now. Now here is Xavier Edwards one for three. Very high with that one. Ball one. If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get in the scoring position. Hit in the air right field. And there’s one away. The right fielder number seven, Jesus sent. So up next, Jesus Sanchez. He’s already homerred here in this one. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Trying to hold a one-run lead here in the bottom of the seventh. Check swing called strike with two strikes. may see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Next pitch is outside. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Just off the outside part of the plate. Really nice slider right there. Sweeping across the dish, but just couldn’t hang the edge. And a swing and a miss. Now two away. Now batting. Here’s the catcher Ramirez. Ramirez. Pitch misses inside. One and0. Fast ball for a strike at 95. And a count one and two. Really going after him here. All fast balls to get ahead in the count. runner on the move. Foul ball still a one and two count. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. The high heat too much on that one. Sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve, but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results. And right there, thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam. Now pitching. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eight. Blake Backer. And he’s been racking up strikeouts at a high rate this year. Typically at least one an inning. So he’ll be tough to get to. And stepping in for the Astros, Zack Short. That one finds the zone. Strike one. A little out front there as he swings through it. Got him swinging. No messing around with the pitch calling in that sequence right there. Four pitches, all fast balls. Yeah. And that makes me think that was the plan before the at bat even started. If you think you can simply just beat a guy with only your fast ball, why throw him anything else until he shows you he can handle it. Now it’s the second baseman, Jose Altuve. Just missed. just missed activity in the bullpen. Cal Quantrol, the right-handed sinker baller. He looks to be readying himself. One down, base is empty. That one misses. Three balls, no strikes. And there’s the automatic. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Still finds a way to get off a throw and it’s in time. It wasn’t the smoothest play you’ll see today, but they still get the out. Yer Diaz. Two outs. Base is empty. At the plate is the Astros catcher, Yiner Diaz. 0 for three in this one. First pitch just misses. 10. And strike one to the catcher. One and one. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the eighth. On the ground to third. Zips it to first. And the Astros put down in order. Nothing doing there for Houston, but they hold on to a 4-3 lead. Now pitching back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Brian Abrau. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. Now here’s the Marlins DH Kyle Stard three for threes doubled twice and single and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Swang and a miss. No balls, two strikes. gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. And a breaking ball misses outside and that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. And a ball even the count. Good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with. You’re better off taking that pitch inside three into the cow. Otto Lopez in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Looking to get the tying run on base. Foul ball and it remains a full cow and the tying run is on base. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat and ends up drawing the wall. Very gritty. No outs. Runner at first. Otto Lopez. The next up for the Marlins way. Maybe losing command a little bit after the walk. Next pitch, not even close. holding on to a one-run lead here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. And strike two. One ball, two strikes up the middle. sneaks through base hit and a go ahead run is on base. Still able to come through behind in the count right there. Just kept it simple. Played Pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from. And there was just no one there to knock it down. A chance now to even the score and maybe extend this game. First base. And here’s the first baseman, Troy Johnston. Corner infielders up on the grass expecting a bunt. And there’s no doubt that they’ll feed off the energy from this crowd, right? I mean, yeah, I’d say the intensity level has gone up a few notches for sure. Trying to move the runners over. Dubong fires to first on the run. That throw is wide. He has to lunge off the bag to get it. No outs on the play. Base is now loaded. Base is loaded. Nobody out. And at the plate for Miami, Ariberto Hernandez. He’s already homerred in this game. This is what stat nerds like myself might call a high leverage situation. Yeah, Boo. Not sure what the numbers say, but clearly an at bat that could change the course of this game dramatically. First pitch misses. A strike out. And you need a ball perhaps on the ground for a double play or get yourself a popup, something, but you got to make some pitches. But if he can battle and get through this, he can earn some points. Next offering is in for a strike in the infield at the corners. Don’t be surprised to see them come home first and prevent that run from scoring. Base hit right field. One runs in. A second scores as well. They lead it in the eighth. Such great concentration. Everybody on their feet knowing that you can come through with a good swing. And there he doesn’t try to do too much. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the bullpen. Brian Abrau won’t go any further tonight and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. Now pitching. They hand the ball over to a new arm, Hunter Brown. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. So runners at the corners, nobody out. And up next for Miami, Graham Paulie 0 for three with two ground outs and a strikeout. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Ball one, no strike. swing and a miss. The Astros have some action in their pen. Caleb Ort up and throwing the one-1 dives and he can’t hang on. The throw is still in time and that’s out number one on a tough play. Just a great effort all the way around at third base right there. Nice job to get a glove on it with the dive, but it was the recovery that was so impressive. If he doesn’t hop to his feet and get the throw off in such a fluid motion over there, I kind of doubt he gets the out. So, digging in, Dane Meyers. There’s the strike. 01 now. Called strike. A sinker at the bottom of the zone. Quickly into an 02 count. Both pitches were down in the zone. I think you set your sights a little bit higher in the air. Right field. Base hit. One run in already. Here’s the throw to the plate, but it’s offline. It’s 74. Xavier Edwards now at the plate. Misses off the plate. And that’s ball one. Still only one out here in the inning. And another ball. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. Ruer takes off. Swinging a ground ball up the middle. Altuve slings to first. No chance at the double play with the runner in motion. The right fielder number seven, Jesus. And now for the Marlins, Jesus Sanchez. That one finds the zone and that is strike one. Swings through that one. This guy’s got such a good sinker as a hitter. You’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. And now one and two. Meyers on at second with two down. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Swing and a miss and he chases that one in the dirt. Catcher has it. Fires the first and it’s in time for the third out. So that’ll end the inning. Four runs in the inning and they’ve jumped in front through eight full. It’s the Marlins seven and the Astros four. pitching. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Matt Emory. A chance at his first save of the year. Now it’s the Dro, Christian Walker. Christian Walker. And that’s in there at the knees for a strike. Emory, a 62 righty. He features a four seam fast, a slider, and he works in a change up. Swaying in a miss, and the count is 0 and two. Swings and misses. And a strike out for the first out here in the ninth. Well, that right there is what you want to see out of your closer. Come in and close the door. Cancel any hope that that opponent has in making some type of comeback in the ball game. Tell you what, that helps him settle in and that helps everybody else relax a little bit to get these other two outs. And first off is fouled off. slapped foul up the middle and that’s a base hit. The first base hit number 17 man at first with one gone. Victor Keratini getting ready to hit that one to first. The throw to second. The double play ends it right here. The ball for his first career save deserves to be on display at his house. I mean, it’s kind of like when a restaurant frames its first dollar bill somewhere in a wall. You just can’t forget your first save. This one finishes with a final of seven to four. for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
