MLB LIVE🔴 Boston Red Sox vs Kansas City Royals – Aug 4, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

From historic Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, we’ve got baseball on the show. It’s the Kansas City Royals and the Boston Red Sox. Alongside Chris Singleton, I’m John Shami. Well, Singy, when you consider the top hitters ballparks in the sport, this has got to be one of them. I’ll say this, pitchers have to stay with their game. They can’t look over their shoulder and think, “I have to be fine and perfect on every pitch.” Continue to pitch to your strengths and you’ll come out of here with a good outing. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. Just a little bit away from first pitch, getting the nod on the mound, Brian Beao. And Singi, it’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strike out. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that can keep a good tempo. Don’t give hitters time to adjust or think they can move through a ball game and you look up, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. Drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck back there onto the track and he makes the catch. And here now the lineup for the Royals. And singy, I’m a bit surprised to see this many righties in the lineup against a right-hander. Yeah, you’re not the only one, Boo. I’m a bit surprised as well. And you know, some hitters work well against same-handed pitching. You know, just back in 2024, Bobby Whit Jr., Vlad Guerrero Jr., and Aaron Judge all had higher batting averages against righties than they did against lefties. So maybe they got a plan after all. Bobby Wick Jr. stands in now and watches strike one. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Has room and he makes the catch. Boy, that was a hanging breaking ball right there. I think he tried to do a little bit too much. Sometimes those eyes can get really big. I think his swing broke down as well and that’s what caused him to pop it up. Two down, base is empty. And now the first baseman, Vinnie Pasquantino. Way high there. Ball one. Now bullet to second base, but he’s got it to end the inning. KC down in order now. The Red Sox will get their shot. No score. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back here in Boston and on the hill in this one, Jonathan Bolan. Well, you can see his whip is a little above the league average. Not bad, but I think in this one, he’s going to need to control that a little bit better. Try to limit hitters from getting on base. Stay in that windup instead of the stretch. And when he does allow base runners, be able to throw a pitch. He’s going to get a swing and miss. get out of the inning so that a base hit doesn’t do more damage and put his team behind the eightball. Now it’s the rookie DH Roman Anthony just missed. That one misses and it’s 2 and 0. And another ball. That one finds the zone. And now three balls and a strike. that smashed towards center. Isbel makes the play and there’s one away. Check out the Red Sox lineup. And perhaps part of the game plan is to get into the bullpen as early as possible. They’re facing a staff that’s blown a lot of games in the later innings. And his hitters, you’re aware of that, but you don’t want to become too relaxed in too late in the ball game because you never know what could happen on any given day. But with that said, even if you fall behind early, you’ve got a lot of confidence that this game will not be over until that final out. Abraham Toro in the box now. No balls anywhere. Strike. Sliced hard but fouled down the left side. keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. One down. Base is empty. Line drive. Snags it on the run. And there are two outs. That was just a great jump and route to the ball. It had to be. If he was going to cover all that ground and bring in that sinking liner, that’s the way it had to be done. Nice job, Jiren Durant in the box now as he leaves that one up high in there for a strike at the bottom of the zone. Two outs. Base is empty. line to right and that’ll be a base hit. Well, that’s one of those knocks where you almost expect to get some jabs from your teammates when you get back to the dugout. That line drive isn’t going to light up Statcast or anything like that, but it gets the job done. And he just kind of caught it on a weird spot of the bat, but he didn’t get cheated with the swing, that’s for sure. And now they’ve got some speed on runner on the goal. Pitch is high. throws strike singy. He definitely showed off the wheels there. Yeah, and it turned out to be a bang bang play. Statcast gives us the data and that stolen base wasn’t possible without that sprint speed. Ruer at second, two down. That misses the zone. Now 2 and 0. Next offering is fouled back. Man on second, two down. Fouls one off. Two and two. Well, pretty clear to me he was trying to go deep right there. But you’ve got to get a pitch that you can handle. And that’s a strike out looking a controversial called strike three to end the inning. Well, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job of getting out of the jam. Back now with Venway. And now it’s Salvador Perez to the plate. Salvador Perez. Here’s a batter who for whatever reasons plays better on the road and that should help him here today. Beo back to work and the pitch a little bit low. Ball one. One and0. And that one fouled off. Off the mark there. Two and one. Last couple of pitches. Breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. And the 2-1 hammered but foul on the ground right side. Raphaela tosses to first and quickly one away in the second. Batting fifth right fielder Randall Bridget. Randall Gretchic now. First pitch and he just misses. Swing and a highf fly ball pulled foul and that’s out of play. Great swing and solid contact. Just a little too quick. He’s got to stay back a little longer. The 1-1 is fouled off. And now it’s even up. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Second inning here. No score. And that’s downstairs and outside. Still just the second batter of the inning. And on the mound, he’s already thrown 13 pitches. They got him working hard out there to the right side. And that chance handled. Fires over to first. That was a strong at bat even though he couldn’t find a way on base. Here’s the catcher, Freddy Fine. That one finds the zone. Strike one. Swing a miss at a slider. Well, you got the hitter already chasing that nasty slider. If you’re on the mound, you just want to expand the zone right now. Get a swing and miss and get through this at bat. Two down. Tap dances out of the way of that one. That one the other way and foul ball and he deals. Still two and two after the foul ball. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. spoils that one and it remains two and two. Two outs. Now he breaks his bat, gets it to first. Royals set down in order. Nothing doing for the offense that time. We go to the bottom of inning number two. We’re tied nothing. Nothing. Back here in Fenway, bottom of the inning. And now the right fielder, Will Abrau. That’s in there. And that’s strike one. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. our plate umpire Earl Hris. Yeah, with Hendricks boo kind of interesting. He’s a good consistent umpire, but you do hear that he kind of favors one side of the plate more than the other. So, it’s really hard to know for sure, but I think that usually it has to do something with where he sets up prior to each pitch. Falling behind two and one. Rip towards third over to first. Leadoff man retired here in the second. Batting six, first baseman Romy Gonzalez. Romy Gonzalez up next for the Red Sox. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively, but runs pretty well. So, when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. just missed. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field and that will fall. So, a man aboard now with one away. That ball right there landed in what they call a no man’s land. Meaning, it’s not really a spot on the field where you can expect anyone to get to it easily. I mean, it’s a tough play going back for the shorts stop, but also for the outfielders trying to come in. They got to go a long way as well. And now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first. Masataka Yoshida batting with one down, takes a strike. What about him playing another position on defense, one that would require a little more range. Absolutely. And I think if push came to shove where they had to make a a move during a game, it’d surprise a lot of people. You might even be able to put him in center field. Slapped hard the other way, but foul. If it were an average catcher behind the plate, I’d say take second base. But this isn’t a catcher you want to run on. His quick release is unreal. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Gonzalez stands at first with one out. Well, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat. And I’m sure there’s sometimes where pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Liner base hit throw into third and the throws off line safe at third. But when you see that many pitches in an at bat, your chances of succeeding go off. And right there we see the result. Two on, one out. Raphaela the next to hit. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season, so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. Two on, one out. And that is out of play. Got him swinging. Certainly a strikeout situation right there. The infield playing back and this pitcher has to step up and get the swing and miss. Really nice job of attacking the hitter at the plate. Pretty big two out at bat coming up now. Joe stepping in for Boston. Connor Wong just off the inside edge. One out. Runners on first and third. Two away. Next offering upstairs. Tough spot right here. Couple runners on. Two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. Next offering is in for a strike. Just missed out there on the mound. He’s got to go right after this hitter because you don’t want to turn this lineup over. This is the guy that you’ve got to get that final out. get out of this inning and they’re all loaded up. Oh, that sets up a really big at bat in this game. These are the moments when everyone in the stadium gets really locked in. And next is the designated hitter, Roman Anthony. He’s 0 for one. It’s early, but these bats can impact a game just as much as they do later. Here’s a chance to set the tone early for your team. Swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. Linder right base hit and they strike first as they take a one- nothing lead. Ball comes in, runner stops at third. Bases still loaded with two out. Always feels good when you come through and get your team on the board first. Solid swing from start to end. On time with everything. Really good balance. Nice extension. And he met it out front for the line drive. And with two down, the Red Sox the early lead. Abraham Toro up next to the Red Sox. All loaded up. Bottom half of inning number two. That one at 95 missed up top. And now two and that one fouled off. out towards left center and that’s the inning. But they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s an early one- nothing lead. You’re dialed into the show. Back here at Fenway Park. All set for the start of the inning. Leading off, Adam Frasier. Frasier bats left, throws right, hitting seventh in today’s lineup, and he was a sixth round draft pick back in 2013. Next pitch is outside. Swing and a base hit. So, a man on base to start the inning. Batting eight left fieldielder. Pitch was in and off the plate. So hard to do anything with the pitch in that location, but somehow he got the barrel to it and hit it well. Pretty amazing. And stepping in the rookie left fielder 10 in the dirt. And the runner holds way inside. Gets out of the way. Straighten him up a little bit. And a foul ball makes the count two and one. Called strike. A sinker at the bottom of the zone. That’s a great take right there. Even though it’s a strike with the situation runner on first base, you want to keep the ball off the ground and you swing at that pitch. Most likely you roll into a double play. It falls for a hit. Lead runner to second. So two on and nobody out. The first move felt like a bit of a guess. You have to be right in those spots or things can get away from you awfully quickly. And now it’s Kyle Isbel. And that’s in there at the knees for a strike. Slice hard but foul. First and second, no outs. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. Lifted in the air now the left side and it’s Steve Bear coming home. He scores to tie it up. It’s an RBI single. It’s 1-1. a costful mistake in the outfield thanks to the bad read and terrible timing for that to happen. That’s a play you just want to forget about. So up next, Michael Garcia. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. And that drops in for a strike. up the middle. Oh, great stop. There’s one to first save. It’s a fieldielder’s choice and an RBI. Well, that ball off the bat ticketed for the outfield and a base hit for the hitter, but just taken away by the diving stop. Nice job, now. Here’s Bobby Wit Jr. Runner on the go. Pitch in for a strike. Save Zack with a stolen base. You know, having a good lead is so key when you’re stealing bases, even if you’ve got great speed. But if you don’t have great speed, but can get an extended lead and a good jump, you can steal bases on a catcher who can really throw it. That’s a nice job right there. Fouled off. He was late. Fouled off. And they’ll do it again. Foul ball still 0 and two man at second. Swings through for the Kay went back to the slider and it was a good idea. Well, they get the strike out there and what kind of stood out to me was that they weren’t shying away from contact. Every single pitch was in the strike zone. And that tells me they wanted to attack him and it paid off. And here’s the first baseman, Vinnie Pasquantino. 0 for one so far. And that one’s a little bit low. And that’s ball one. Garcia on it second with two down. That misses. Two balls, no strikes. Swanging a ground ball. It’s through for a hit. Coming home. Here’s the throw to the plate. Safe at home. And the runner scores from second and they take a two-run lead. Well, they call that an advantage count for a reason. You’re so much more likely to get something you can handle. Couldn’t get any air under it, but he smoked that ball back up the middle. Timing was just perfect. Got great wood on it. And there’s just no chance for the infielders with how hard he hit it. Two outs, runner at first. Now it’ll be the cleanup hitter for the Royals, Salvador Perez. Next offering is in for a strike. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the wall. He’s going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. Andy will shoot. One, two. Slider misses outside. The guy at the plate could recognize Slider out of the hand. Didn’t stay in the tunnel very long in terms of depth and perception. He knew right away it was an off speed pitch. Here’s the 2-2. And there’s the ball. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion. So something in the gap should definitely score it. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AV going. So now two on and two outs. A breaking ball in that 3-2 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. Randall Gritic steps in for the Royals. grounded out his first time. That one catches the zone. One. When you’re struggling out there on the mound, hitters know that there’ll be plenty of opportunities within the at bat to try to get something to hit hard. Now one and one. movement in the bullpen. Garrick Crochet up and throwing. Two outs. Couple of base runners at first and second in the dirt. Blocked. Two on, two outs. Up the middle on the run. throw to first and they get the out. Three runs for him here and they move ahead. We move on to the bottom of inning number three. It’s the Royals three and the Red Sox won. Back inside Fenway Park set for the bottom of the third and now Jiren Durant. We talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it. But pushing the offensive side for just a second, Chris, it’s the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most in the air out towards right center. He’s got it. And there’s one down. Every day during batting practice, these outfielders get about 10 minutes of bars in the gaps. They practice this and when the game comes, they make the play perfectly. Well, he gets to balls that get by most people at that position. just really impressive because there’s certain times a ball comes off the bat automatically that team that hit it thinks that they’ve got a base hit or they may have extra bases and he just takes it away. One out, base is empty and that’s in the dirt. fights it off. He’ll see another foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming and a swing and a miss. down on strikes and he’s registered three Ks in this one. Just a great slider right there. And I think the key for pitchers and what hitters don’t want to see is if a pitcher misses with that pitch that he misses off the edge of the strike zone rather than in the middle of the strike zone. And right there, excellent execution and it finished up in a perfect spot. Two down swinging a liner foul off to the right. You know, Chris, through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. Hard on the ground to first. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. Red Sox go down quietly and it remains a 3-1 ball game. Back in Boston, John Shami with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Freddy Fine. Come on, Red. A little out front there as he swings through it. 0 and one. Grounds one to short. Story rolls across the diamond. That’s the first out in the top of the fourth. What about the fans at Fenway? Would they let you have it from time to time? They’re definitely intelligent baseball fans, which is awesome. They’re not waiting for something to happen. They can smell a big inning or anticipate a situation setting itself up. Frasier stands in now and watches strike one. One thing I found that was very cool was making a great play to end the inning and running off the field and getting a standing ovation. Even at times when you’re not a player on their team, as long as you’re not winning, they will celebrate and applaud a great play on the field. These fans here, they love and respect baseball. Two out, space is empty. Now the left fielder singled and scored his first time. He swings and fouls one off. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. And that one hit to first. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly, but they get the out at first. And that’ll do it for the inning. Three up, three down. That time we’re midway in the fourth. It’s the Royals three and the Red Sox one. Righty reliever out of the pen, Thomas Hatch. And he comes on here for the first time this season. And I’m sure there’s some nerves involved in that. So we’ll see how he settles in. Romy Gonzalez now at the plate. One for one with a single and a run scored so far. Romy Gonzalez. on the ground. Frasier jumps, throws on the money. Nice play. Up next for the Red Sox. Left fieldielder. Here’s the left fielder. Yosha the other way. and foul ball. One down, base is empty on the ground to third. Already two gone here in the home floor. Now batting second base, Sedan Raphael. And stepping in for Boston, Sidan Raphaela. Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Swings here and blasts one left field and it bangs off the monster. Takes the turn. He’s digging for second and in there with a double off the wall. He quickly went from hitter to base runner. Love when guys make that transition. And he’s got speed to put on a show. So runner at second, two down. Connor Wong getting ready to hit. Walked his first time. And there’s a rocket into the outfield. Brown’s third headed for the plate and it gets by in. He’ll score and he’ll pull into second with two gone. No waiting around right there. He was ready to swing it on the first pitch. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. Back to the top of the lineup. Roman Anthony up next for the Red Sox. RBI knock for him last time. Now a chance to drive in another run. That one hooked foul. As a pitcher, you know the runner on second is ready to push things with this speed. A base hit is probably going to be a big run. So you really have to execute on the mount. And that’s fouled off. That misses the zone and count one and two. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. On the ground to third. Garcia whips it across. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. Red Sox with an RBI double. It’s now a 32 ball game. Major League Baseball is on the show. Back here at Fenway, we go to the top of the fifth. And now Kyle Isel Beo back to work. And that misses. And that is ball one. Highfly ball down the left field line. And a foul ball. And he lays down a bunt and he beats it out. It’s a bunt single to start the inning. This was the perfect spot to drop the bunt for a hit. I mean, he used his bat as a tool up there to direct the ball exactly where he wanted it to go and look smooth doing it at the same time. Really well done. And the defense right there stood no chance. Now, here’s the leadoff hitter for the Royals, Mike Garcia. First offering runner goes that one fouled off. That’s the third and it goes just foul. Gets a piece and stays alive. Here’s the O2. Swing and a miss. Struck came out and the runner stays where he is. Now Betty short stop. Now it’s the short stop. Bobby Whit Jr. for two in this one. Runner on the go. Fouled off left side. Beo picks the first. Isbel back in on a dive. You know, Boo, this is a player with some serious speed. In 2023, he became the first player in 20 years to record two infield hits and an inside the park home run in the same game. Isbel the runner at first with one gone in the inning. The short stop takes a ball. Runner goes again. This one in the air. Gonzalez has a beat on it. He’s there. He’s got it. Out number two. Now batting the first baseman, Vinnie Pascantino. Vinnie Pasquantino steps in for the Royals. And a liner out into right center for a base hit. Durant quickly gets it back in. Lead runner to second with two gone. Waste no time there. That’s a good sound coming off the bat, man. And as he connected out front and ripped it into the outfield, that’s one of those swings where you just don’t even feel the ball hit the barrel. That’s a pure stroke. Perez stands in with two away as he takes a ball. If he can get through this one, put up a zero, this will help in his outings to come. And that misses at a countdown two and nothing. First and second, two down. And a foul ball makes the count. Two and one. getting a little frustrated with the strike zone. Two outs and now it’s filled up. That’s good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and in just on the edge and that’s one of those if you swing at it. He had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Foul ball and it remains a full count. First and second, two down and we’re in the top of the fifth. He fouls it off. Will do it again. And that’ll load the bases. Take your base. Pitch count’s getting up there now. And not saying that’s the reason for this walk, but this is the point in the game when every sign of wavering starts to get everyone’s attention. And now Alex Kora is out of the dugout and he will make a move for the bullpen. Brian Beo departs and it wasn’t his best start, but he kept them in it to this point. And we’ll come back with a new arm. Now pitching. So the Red Sox bring on a new pitcher, Jordan. Still pretty early in the ball game. So, this bullpen has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs, kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him. So, bases all loaded up. Randall Gritic steps in for the Royals. He’s grounded out a couple of times. pass the catcher just missing off the plate there according to the umpire and out there on the mound maybe trying to get an explanation. Can’t say he’s convinced, but it looks like he’s accepted it. And the one that missed, in situations like these, the air can get really thin up there at the plate. Got to find a way to breathe and slow everything down. And that is cut on and missed. And it’s two and one. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. Next offering is in for a strike. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. Two outs. Bases are full. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Still two and two after the foul ball. Out to short story. They take the force out. out to escape a bases loaded jam unscathed. So a strong showing there from the Boston bullpen. Home half of the fifth coming up. It’s the Royals three and the Red Sox two. And welcome back to the ballpark. Abraham to third baseman Abraham Toro fought off foul. Next pitch just misses. It’s a ball in two strikes into center. That one gets down for a hit. Off to a good start with a leadoff nod. Hitting is really easy for some guys. One thing that I can see already, his bat stays in the zone on plane for an extended period of time. And guys like that, they have a high contact rate and they have more barrels because of that bat being on plane. And even when you don’t get it great, it’s still hit hard enough to dunk something in like that in front of the center fielder. Durant in the box now. Takes strike one. Tying run is at first. Last half of inning number five. And that’s a little bit high. One and one. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield on the ground. Two ball jump throw. Safe at first as they can’t make the play. Now that is shortstop Trevor Story. Here’s Trevor Story now who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. It’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed and fouled off. Toro at second. Durant at first with no outs. tapped at the plate, but it’s a foul ball. That’s too low now. One and two. Way to lay off that pitch down and a swing and a miss. And that is a big first out. Well, that’s always the key to effective pitching is getting ahead in the count. And as a pitcher, it really allows you to start expanding the zone. Hitters become defensive and all of a sudden that plate starts to get really wide. What happens is because of the pressure, you end up committing to a pitch as a batter before you recognize what it is and that’s what leads to the strikeout. Next to hit, Willard Abrau, that’s off the inside corner. One and0 at the dish looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot. anything but the inning ending double play boo. One out runners at first and second swing and a miss and one and one. Tie a guy up like that, you’re feeling like you are in command. Swing a highf fly ball deep left field into the monster seats and gone. And that’s how they take the lead. It’s 53. Listen to these fans. This place is absolutely buzzing right now. You can feel the energy all the way up here in our broadcast booth. When you’re working with this kind of velocity, so critical that you move the ball around, work quickly, and make sure that you keep that hitter off balance. Clearly not fooled by the location or the velocity. He was all over that fast. And the Royals manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make the move. Thomas Hatch gives way. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout. And we’ll be back with a new pitcher. Steven Cruz comes on now and he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits, period. One down. Next is the speedy first baseman Romy Gonzalez out to short with and there’s two away. Up next for the Red Sox, left fielder Masataka Yosha. And next for the Red Sox, Masataka Yoshida. And that one popped in the air left field. And that is that. Socks get three on the homer. It’s now a 53 ball game. Back after this on the show. And we’re back here at Fenway Park. Now it’s going to be Freddy Fine. here. Hicks a 6’2 righty 28 years old and they traded for him earlier this year. And that’s off the outside edge and it’s one and0. Boston’s bullpen with some activity. Justin Wilson, the left-handed reliever appears to be getting loose. Bernardino warming up as well. And that’s through there for a strike. And it’s one and one. And the sweeper misses. Two-1. Swing and a miss as he was out front that time. And the next pitch is way outside. him out. Line drive and it stays fair. Love how he became a really tough out with two strikes right there. He really shot that one down the right field line and somehow found a way to keep it from slicing. Foul. One thing that was great about the approach, his head was down all the way through the pitch and that’s how you do it. Here’s Adam Frasier, one for two, and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter with the tying run at the plate. And we’re in the top half of the six. That’s a strike across the top of the zone. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches. Now in an 02 hole. He’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake. Bounced and that got the pitcher gets to first ahead of the runner and they do get the out now. Daddy left field and now they’ll hustle out to check on him. That was quite a shot he took as you see him down on the knee. Yeah, clearly in some real pain, but he will not want to come out of this game if he doesn’t have to. It’s looking to me like he’s going to try to shake it off and continue. Now the left fielder. This is what stat nerds like myself might call a high leverage situation. Yeah, Boo. Not sure what the numbers say, but clearly an at bat that could change the course of this game dramatically. And that’s outside ball one. Red Sox leading it by two. And another ball outside. That one misses and now three and 0. Three and 0. And there’s the automatic. And they’re at the knees. Three and two now. Red Sox by two. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. Ground ball up the middle to third. Tag. Got him. Oh, boo. We talk about how the ball is coming out of a pitcher’s hand comes out of his hand as an infielder. Wow. Really impressive. Kyle Isbel digs in now. line to left. He dives, but he can’t make the catch. And now they’ll have runners on the corners with two away. Having himself a really nice game at the plate. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages, working on going to the opposite field, and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did. And he did it perfectly. Here’s the third baseman, Mike El Garcia. We just might be talking about this at bat in our postgame rap. He’s proven he can drive in runs in these spots. Down low and kicks away, but all the runners hold. Corners are occupied with two down. That’s down and in. Rips that one to right, squeezes in, and that’s the third out. So they strand a pair. 891 scheduled in the bottom of the sixth. It’s the Red Sox five, Royals three. Back now with Venop Son Raphael Son Raphael. That’s off the mark and that’s ball one. You know these Red Sox really impressing me with the quality of their bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work. The numbers paint a pretty clear picture. The offense likes playing with fire today. Seven of their hits have come off of fast balls. So, that tells me their timing is pretty locked in right now. The catcher, Connor Wong. Here’s the speedy catcher, Connor Wong. So, with that fast ball approach in mind, it’ll be interesting to see if we see any adjustments in terms of the pitch calling. Yeah, clearly there’s been a need to mix it up a little bit more than they have. Diving it gets down. Could be extra bases in safely with a double. His second of the day. Two hits for him in this one. Both for extra bases. Got to feel good about that. Ripped that one down the line and kept it fair. And even when you hit it that far out front, you still have to keep your hands tight to your body so you don’t hook around that baseball and put it in foul territory. And that right there was perfect. Now at the plate, Roman Anthony. And that’s him for a strike. 01 man at second. Hit hard on the ground to short. Fires across the diamond. Two away. And now it’s switch hitting third baseman Abraham Toro. One for three. Abraham sing. He’s got a history of coming through in the big spots. I know I like to talk about I’m not sure whether clutch actually exists, but you look at the numbers and this guy always seems to deliver in those spots. Highf fly ball out to left field and the inning is over and the Red Sox leave one and it remains 53. Now pitching. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound. Brennan Bernardino. Well, he’s been a really tough guy to take deep this season. You usually have to string some hits together in order to get to him. So, digging in, Bobby Whit Jr. for three in this one. Highfly ball shallow right field. Abrau brings it in. And there’s one down. Now batting the first baseman, Vinnie Pasquantino the next to hit. Just missed. And there’s a foul ball. him down. Got him looking. That was pretty nasty. Now it’s the DH Salvador Perez. ated hitter Salvador Perez. And first offering is fouled off. Two down, nobody on here in the top half of inning number seven. That one off the mark and it’s one and one. One ball, one strike. And there’s one. That one missed. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. Two down, nobody on. Outside and low. It’s ball four. And that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. Oh, a good day for the on base percentage right there. Walk number three. And the free bags keep on coming. You down with OBP. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Brennan Bernardino won’t go any further tonight. And as he heads for the dugout, we’ll take a quick break. New arm on the mound when we get back. Now pitching Greg Weisser on the pitch out of the pen here. Should be a good first match up for him here. He’s been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season. They’ve had a lot of trouble squaring him up. So up next, Randall Gritic 0 for three with three ground outs. Smoked on the ground to second. They get the force and that is the inning. No runs on no hits, no errors and one left. Seventh inning stretch time. It’s the Red Sox five Royals three. Now pitching for We’re back at a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Sam Long. He’s been so good against lefties. Now batting Jiren Durant for the Red Sox. Center fielder Jiren Durant. Late on that fast ball. Zero balls, one strike. Not even close there. And that’s ball one in the air right field. Gritic makes the grab. One down now. betting shortstop Trevor Story. Here’s Story now 0 for three with three strikeouts. Let’s go Red. Come on. Pitch is in for a strike and it’s 0 and one. Activity in the Kansas City bullpen. Hunter Harvey, the hardthrowing righty, is up and loosening. Not close with that one. And that is ball one. And misses inside. Base is empty. One away here. The bottom of the seventh. Pitch misses. Three balls in a strike. And there’s ball four outside four. Oh, that’s a really good take right there. And that’s just mentally prepared knowing that if it’s not on a team, you’re going to take that pitch because you still have one more strike to work with. Not easy to lay off, but he did an excellent job in that play defense. Joe stepping in for Boston. Willard Abra certainly a factor in this one thanks to his threerun blast back in the fifth. Well, definitely one of the most impactful swings of the game. A big reason why they’re working with the lead and looking to add to it right here. Dug on belted and that one is out of here. Another homer. He’s done it again. His second homer of the game. And they boost their lead. It’s 73. One pitch, one swing, one home run. Yeah, you can say that’s efficiency right there. Didn’t need much time in the box to make an impact. A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. Base is empty, one away. And here is Romy Gonzalez. That pitch gets the corner. That’s strike one. And a strike on the outside edge. He doesn’t seem to like to pitch up. Hasn’t offered on either one of those pitches. 02 count now. I think the guy’s going to climb the ladder out there. One down, base is empty. That one got close. And the count is one and two. O2 fast ball way out of the zone. I think he’s trying to speed him up. Got to stay back. Off speed’s probably coming. Stays alive. Cut on and lifted in the air. Reaches over the wall and he’s got it. Now batting left fielder Masataka Yoshida. Here’s the left fielder Masataka Yoshida. That one finds the zone. Strike one. Two outs. swinging a ground ball up the middle. Jump throw across his body. Nicely done for the out. Two runs for Boston on the home run. It’s now 73. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Back here in Boston, we’re in the top of the eighth and here’s the catcher, Freddy Fine. The Royals in striking distance, but have some work to do. Boog, it starts with the laid-off man. I need a good at bat out of him right here. Red. And the first pitch misses for ball one. The Red Sox with some bullpen action. Jorge Alcala appears to be getting loose. Whitlock getting cranked up as well. Next offering away off the plate. Swang going to ground her foul first base side. on the ground to the left. Toro. First out in the top of the eighth. Up next for the Royals. Second baseman Adam Frasier. Adam Frasier steps in for the Royals. That misses and it’s one and0. The Red Sox leading by four and we’re in the top of the eighth. That’s a ball low on the ground right side. The throw to first. Frasier retired. Now batting left fielder Tyler Tolbert. Now the left fielder. Right through there for a strike. 0 and one. And that one fouled off. Line drive and that’s just foul. Next one misses. One and two to count. One, two, swing in a line drive. Base hit out into center field. Joey gets on base and keeps it going right there. Does a great job of staying in the big part of the field. Man, there are a lot of hits there. Now, here is Kyle Isbel. Three for three with three singles and first offering is fouled off. Two outs. Swinging a foul straight back. That’s a ball. Come on and delivers outside. Two two. struck him out without a swing. That was pretty nasty. Royals lead one. Deficit remains at four. It’s 73. Now pitching for back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Hunter Harvey. Harvey. Sidan Raphael now at the plate. The Red Sox. Second baseman Sedan Raphaela on the inside corner for a strike. Swing at a highf fly ball that’s out to center. One away. Now batting catcher Conor. Conor Wong up next for the Red Sox. And that’s outside. Next offering is in for a strike. One and one. And that’s downstairs and outside. That one finds the zone and now two and two. Dangerous spot for that slider right there. Didn’t seem to quite finish out front and get that sharp break. Tell you what, he doesn’t want to throw that pitch again. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. That’s the second out. First strike out for him in this one. That splitter is maybe the go-to pitch when he’s looking for a swing and miss like that. He throws it quite a bit and that’s a good example of the effect it can have on a hitter. Anthony at the plate now. That’s ball one. There’s the strike. that clips the corner. It’s a tough pitch, but in terms of the best pitch you’re going to get to hit in the at bat, that fast ball was down enough where you’re going to catch up. Griette makes the catch and over. One, two, three. Go the Red Sox, but they still lead it 73. Now pitching. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Garrett Whitlock. And he’s got a nice lead to work with. So he should come in throwing strikes, attacking these hitters. So back to the top of the order now. The third base, Mel Garcia. Garcia. And that’s in for a strike. 01. Some hitters are just more confident if they can track that first pitch out of the hand of the pitcher. They don’t care if they fall behind 01. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2 and they’ll do it and blows the high heat past him. That’s a strike out. Now that he’s two outs away. Here’s the shortstop at the play. Bobby Wit Jr. He’s turned into one of the best shorts stops in the game. just missed. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Jorge Alcala getting ready to go. Base is empty. One away here in the top of the ninth. That’s a ball that’s inside. Yeah, there’s a ball. That missed. That’s a ball. Three. Slider clips the corner. Next offering is fouled back. Got him swinging. Royals down to the final out. Chance to strike out the side. Now, you talk about the benefits, the advantages of relievers who can come in and get the swing and miss, whether it’s inherited runners or maybe a little jam that they get into themselves, knowing that they can miss the bat. Tell you what, that’s huge and can change the ball game. Pasquantino in now takes ball one off the plate. This one could be trouble around first and hustling for second. Pulls in with a double. Third hit for him today. Clearly seeing the ball very well in this one. Smash that one through the infield for the knock. When it’s hit that hard, it makes it very tough on the infielders to make any sort of play. Salvi steps into the box now. He’s 0 for one. Swing and a miss. 0 and one. 0 and one. Pasquantino stands at second with two gone. That one missing inside. They’re down to their final strike. Clearly was sitting on a fast ball right there and just ended up out in front of the slider. Hey, you can’t fault him for his commitment. Now he’s just going to have to battle with two strikes on the ground. And this should do it. And that’ll do it. Whether you’re a season ticket holder or you just come to a couple of games a year to see your team win at home, there’s just something special about that. Good job by this team to get it done for the hometown fans. 73 is how this one ends. For Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show, thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
