MLB LIVE🔴 San Diego Padres vs Arizona Diamondbacks – Aug 4, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

just about set. Our starting pitcher in this one, Ryan Nelson. Well, he’s allowing just over one base runner per inning, which is really good, especially for a starter because these hitters get to see you two, three, maybe even four times in a start. So, just shows you how deceptive and how effective his stuff is. We’ll see if it’s that way in this one. All right, ready to get underway. Fernando Tatis Jr. to hit here [Applause] outside low and we are underway on the ground on to first. One out in the top of the first as we take a look at the Padres’s lineup. Someone who makes things happen for them in part with his legs. Fernando Tatiz Jr. and Boo. He’s the table setter for this offense. Team leader and on base percentage. I mean, that just gives your teammates plenty of chances to cash in and bring them around to score. Man, I used to love when I had a guy out in second base or third base. Easy to get those RBI’s game after game. you know, a guy like this, what he’s going to provide and the opportunities that other guys are going to get in the lineup. Luis Azands in now and watches strike one. [Music] Here’s a batter who for whatever reasons plays better on the road, and that should help him here today. Big time gem right there. I hate it as a hitter, but standing in center field, you can’t help but chuckle a little bit. Close but called the ball. And the count one and two. One out. Base is empty. That’s a ball down the line. Carol sizing this one up. Fielding for the wall. Makes the catch and foul ground. Batting third. Third baseman Manny Machado. And now it’s Manny Machado. What a season it’s been for him. He has supplied a lot of power and that average. Come on. Come on. You can do it. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And that’s ball one. Two out. Space is empty. And Manny gets a piece. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. That one down the line and foul ball. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. and he grounds one back up the middle. Marte throws to first in time. That ends the frame. Padres’s down in order. And now Arizona gets its first opportunity in a scoreless ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show back here at Chase Field. Now, the starting pitcher in this one, you Darvish. What do you look for here? Well, you know, this guy wants to be better than that. I mean, the ERA is bloated. He understands that he’s got to put his team in a better position to win ball games. And at this point, you have to forget about your own individual stats and you have to go out there and attack and try to get that W. And if you do that, you’ll look up and most likely that Erra will have dropped over time. Corbin Carroll, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. Darvish, a 65 righty, 220 lbs, and he was born in Japan. Check. Swing. Called strike. [Applause] Swinging a foul straight back. [Music] Ah, that hit him. And the leadoff man is aboard to start the inning. an outstanding hitter in Cel Mart. And there’s a foul ball. Runner on the move. pitch almost got him and that’s a stolen base. Not even close. I think that steal kind of sets the tone not just for this game but for the entire series. First inning, game one. So that kind of tells me they’re going to be aggressive on offense and try to force the issue whenever they can. Man at second and he pumps it a strike. He must have been looking for something else cuz he gave up on that pitch a little early. It was right down Main Street. Probably not going to see a better pitch to hit in this at bat. Swinging a miss. That one in the dirt. Got him. One away on the strike out. Well done behind the dish. Well, I don’t think there’s a hitter alive that hasn’t at some point succumb to that pitch right there. It just looks like it’s in the zone the entire way and then the top spin and gravity take over in the blink of an eye. And it’s just such a tough pitch to lay off of. Now up next for Arizona, Heraldo Peromo ripped to third to first. Two away. Batting fourth designated hitter. Time to take a look at the Diamondback lineup. The home run a big part of the equation when it comes to this offense. Singing they’re one of the better clubs in the league in terms of putting runs up via the homer. Yeah. And that makes them even more dangerous because they’re going to get their hits, but they’re also going to get those home runs and have runners on base, which is multiple runs out of one swing. So, yeah, you really have to try to manage a team like this and keep them contained. You can’t give up extra outs, whether that be via an error or a walk. AU Heno Suarez stands in with two away as he takes a ball. Let’s go. Next offering is in for a strike and a strike. All sliders so far in this at bat to get ahead in the count and clearly shows there was a game plan in mind for how to attack him in the box. Carol on at second with two down. B [Applause] [Music] [Applause] in the air right field. Tatis makes the play and that is the third out of the inning. One left for the Diamondbacks. Scoreless after one. Back here in the desert, here’s the center fielder, Jackson Merill. Jackson Merrill Nelson back to work. Swing and a miss. Strike one. Low one check swing called strike. It’s a good change up to hit up in the zone. I don’t think he recognized it. I’m sure he’d love to have that one back. Larry Bullard, our umpire behind the plate. Bullard’s got a pretty standard strike zone. Sometimes he’ll have you guessing a little bit, but overall well respected umpire in the league. And that one misses up and in. And the count is one and two. What about some non nos? Like you can’t call the umpire blue the way you do in little league or high school, right? Yeah. Swing. And this one’s blasted. It’s got a chance. And that’s a foul ball. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Started to go after it. Now looked down to third and he went around according to Patrick Johnson. that he fit. And here comes Sander Bogart. Bogart on the inside corner for a strike. Second inning here. No score. Let’s get it going. Line drive. They got it for out number two. It’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting a line drive that finds a glove. But you will get some high fives. You know, when you make great contact, you feel like you’ve done everything right. But in this game of baseball, not everything is in your control. Now, here’s Jake Croninworth. That one finds the zone and it’s 0 and one. Tap foul at the plate. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. And a pitch that’s off the mark and it’s one and two. I don’t like to say he wasted a pitch. I think that was a purpose pitch. Change the eye level. Have him look up. Now go back exactly where you want to go. Missed with a change up. Two and two. Recognize that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. And they’ll do it again. Swing and a miss and he got him. And a nice inning of work there as he sets him down. One, two, three. Nothing doing there for the Friars. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom half of inning number two. Here’s Guriel. He’s got which is a little sneaky because he’s so comfortable with taking his base hits to the opposite field, but he can jump you if you make a mistake. [Applause] Pitch is in there. It’s 0 and one. Swing and a miss. Ugly swing right there. Well, you got the hitter already chasing that nasty slider. If you’re on the mound, you just want to expand the zone right now. Get a swing anding miss and get through this at bat. Foul ball still 0 and two. [Music] On the ground to the left and it goes just foul. fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. Pretty good pitch there to take a rip at. He wants to get his arms extended. He likes the ball away from him a little bit, just not able to square it up. And that skips in the dirt. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You could tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. Swings and misses. struck him out. Oh, that slider wasn’t even close to the strike zone and he got him to chase. That’s just a bad approach right there. Either he was looking for something else and got completely fooled or he was sitting all over the slider and just couldn’t resist the temptation. But man, really expanded right there and didn’t have a chance of making contact with that pitch. Here’s the catcher, Adrien Del Castillo. That pitch in for a strike. One and one. [Applause] That’s in there. I understand you want to try to gauge that guy’s fast ball, but you also have to be aggressive and ready to hit in your zone. Now you’re in a tough spot. gets a piece and it stays 0 and two way inside. Gets out of the way. Now he breaks his bat. Machado on the run. Sends it over to first. Got him. Nice play. Seven. First baseman Tristan English. Next to hit for Arizona, Tristan English. And there’s a ball. Looks like he thinks that should have been a strike at the top of the zone, but doesn’t seem to be too upset. That’s just a case where I think he’s trying to get a better feel for the umpire strike zone and what he’s going to be calling. That’s just a part of pitching. Next offering is in for a strike. Darbish delivers. [Applause] Now it’s three and two. [Applause] and down on strikes. And it’s a three up, three down inning. Nothing doing for Arizona. We’ll move to the third with no score. And we’re back. All set for the start of the inning. And the batter will be the shortstopas. Let’s go back. Swing and a tapper that rolls foul. Next offering in there for a strike. That’s strike two. And a swing and a miss. Down on strikes. That K is his third of the game. Really love the pitch sequence right there. I’m telling you, pitcher and catch are on the same page right now. Here’s Gavin Sheets now. Left hand bat. [Applause] That one finds the zone. Strike one. line to left. Guriel handles the chance. Knight catcher Martine Martine up to hit. Ball one. No strikes. One and0. This one high in the air to left center. Barrosa makes the catch. and over. Home half of the third coming up. No score. Back here at Chase Field as we go to the last of the third. Down to third base, Bla1 Alexander. Pitch misses there and that is ball one right through there for a strike. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. And it is two and one. No, that’s high. [Applause] [Music] Fast ball for a strike. And boy, that was the pitch. 3-1. You want to be really aggressive on the fast ball. Broken background ball to second. Croninworth fires to first on the run and it beats him. What a play. Well, I’m impressed with this guy’s internal clock. He knew he had plenty of time to take that extra step, secure his grip on the baseball, and make a strong, accurate throw. Next to hit, Jorge Barrosa. And the first pitch misses for ball one. One ball. No strike. [Music] There’s the strike. [Music] Swinging a foul straight back. Still tied at zero. Last of the third. Darvish kicks, delivers that one to first. Steps out first for the out. Now batting right fielder Corbin Carol. So back to the top of the Arizona lineup. This is Corbin Carroll. Let’s go back. Come on Diamond. And that’s down and away. One and0. Just off the outside edge. Two count. You really don’t want to give in here. You got to work the edges. Really execute a pitch. Hopefully, you can get back into this count. That one misses. Three balls, no strikes. Back to back breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you, that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So, I think the confidence level is raised right here. Foul ball. Two down to and that’s fouled off. [Music] Got him. Larry Bullard rings him up. So one, two, three go to Diamondbacks. Still no score. Back here in the desert now it’s Fernando Tatis Jr. Fernando Tatis Jr. Come on D. Swang in a line drive ripped right center field and that’s a base hit. So a runner aboard to start the inning. Well clearly he was ready to hit right there. Really good swing right there. there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle, allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer, and he hit the ball on the screws. And now, let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases. Luis Arise stands in. He’s 0 for one. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. [Applause] [Music] And that one gets past the catcher. So a wild pitch allows the runner to advance. Definitely trying to work down and get that double play ball, but it got away enough to erase any chance of that. Good job of moving up into scoring position. Now a hit could make that wild pitch really sting. [Applause] Drilled in the air high and deep right field into the corner but foul. fights it off. He’ll see another runner in scoring position. Nobody out. Top half of inning number four. Stays alive. Man at second. That one to first. And he takes it himself for the out. Not a bad outcome in that spot. The runner moves up to third and now they have a chance to drive in the go ahead run. It’s not a knock, but at the end of the day, it’s a good at bat. Here’s Manny Machado now 0 for one. He grounded out in his first at bat. And Manny gets a piece and he’ll one swing and a miss as he was late that time. Run around at third. One gone. [Applause] Next offering is downstairs. swing and a high-fly ball in the air left field. Guriel handles the chance. Here comes the runner from third. He’ll score on the sack fly on the board first. It’s one zip. There you go. Nice little RBI there. It’s a great at bat. Got the job done. Next to hit, Jackson Merrill struck out swinging his first time [Applause] in the air left field. Guriel has it sized up and he makes the catch and that is that. So they get one run, one hit, no errors, and no one left on. On now to the bottom of the fourth, it’s the Padres’s one and the Diamondbacks nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom four, standing in is the power hitting second base, Catel Marte. Marte, first pitch doesn’t find the zone. Well, these Diamondbacks just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases that are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see. But I think they have to in plenty of time to first. They get the out on Marto. And now it’s going to be Heraldo Purdomo. [Applause] And he swings and misses and it’s nothing at one. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. That’s too low. And one and one. The Padres’s leading by a run. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. One down. Base is empty. That’s down and in. A slider miss. [Applause] This to third. Machado already two gone here in the home fourth. Now batting designated hitter AU Suarez up to hit down. Fly to right his first time. Suarez goes 5′ 11 in 215 lbs. He’s usually a third baseman, but today he’s the designated hitter. That’s in there. And that’s strike one. Little bit of a day off for him. Instead of being at the hot corner, he can just kind of put the batting gloves on, hold the bat as he sits on the bench waiting for his time to hit. Next offering misses and the count even one and one. Just missed. They had a swing and a miss there. Generally second, third time through the lineup, you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them. Looks like he’s doing a nice job of it. And that’s downstairs. And it’s a full count. [Applause] Two outs. Swinging a foul ball at the plate. They’ll do it again. Hard hit right side. Croninworth throws on to first. Darvish gets a one, two, three. So they make short work of him there. Onto the top of the fifth we go. It’s the Padres’s one and the Diamondbacks nothing. And we’re back. Top five, John Shabi with Chris Singleton. And leading it off, Sander Bogarts. Let’s go back. Nelson back to work. Late swing fouled off. Well, he got challenged with a good fast ball right there. Just couldn’t catch up. outside. One and one [Applause] and a pop off right side foul territory. Dell Castillo makes the catch and there’s one down. Now batting second base Jake Croninworth. Jake Croninworth the next up for the Padres’s. His first at bat was a strikeout. in for a strike. Going one, swing and a miss as he was late. It’s a tough pitch, but in terms of the best pitch you’re going to get to hit in the at bat, that fast ball was down enough where you’re going to catch up to one, that’s the one. When he elevates, guys aren’t touched. [Music] base is empty, one away and we’re in the top of the fifth. Fouls it off. Still one and two. One down, base is empty, and a ball evens the count. Swanging a ground ball and that’s just fouled. Now he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. She’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit, try to move it around, create just a little bit of illusion at the end. Now batting shortstop, Joseas. That ball was absolutely ripped. 111 off the bat and I’m pretty sure it started to whistle after it left the bat. I think I heard that too, Boo. And these are the moments we appreciate when we can look at Statcast and just see exactly what the data is. Always so much fun to see what numbers pop up. And now here is Josea Glaciius. One ball, no strike. Croninworth the runner at first with one gone in the inning. Turn now. Let’s go. That one’s in there. One ball, one strike. One way to make a guy real uncomfortable at the plate is pound him inside with good velocity. They’re doing that right here. Swing in a miss. And it’s one and two. Cena strikes him out for the second time today. Now here is Gavin. He’s 0 for one. And that is downstairs. Ball one. Two outs. Edge of the zone for a strike. And now it’s even. One and one. [Applause] Move to first. Croninorth dives back in. Let’s go. There’s a 1-1. And that one is inside. Good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with. You’re better off taking that pitch. Come on. Here we go. 3-2 now. 3-2. Two out. Runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. Foul ball and it remains a full cow. That one hammered center field back there. And that one is off the batter’s eye. Wow. Out of here. And they add to their lead. It’s three nothing. Those are the at bats that leave pitchers exhausted. He had to throw a lot of pitches and still gave up the long ball. That’s a bad combo. Knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spent on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient. And it paid off. And here’s the catcher, Martine Maldonado. Fly to center his first time. And that’s a little high. [Music] swing and a miss. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Anthony Dclifani appears to be getting loose. Woodford getting cranked up as well. [Applause] This one in the air right field. Carol and makes the play and that’s out number three. Two across on this San Diego homer. It’s now 3 nothing. Back here at Chase Field and it’s Lordis Gore Jun leftiel scoring runs. This is where you’re looking for that shut down inning. Get that hot team back in there to swing the bats. Yeah, the first offering a fast ball for a strike. You know, these Dbacks just aren’t putting together very many good at bats in this one. Just one base runner to this point and it’s not exactly early anymore. They have guys in this lineup capable of sparking something, but it just hasn’t happened for him yet. Griel gets a piece. [Music] Next offering is down low. Really good take especially with two strikes. swings through it and that’s a strikeout. Oh, nothing too fancy on the strikeout pitch right there. Just a low 90s fast ball. I’m not sure he was trying to challenge him, but that’s pretty much what happened. Veryable location, but he found a way to just get it by him. Now the Dback’s catcher, Adrien Del Castillo, grounded out his first time up. That one pushed foul out of play off to the left. Well, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. Tatis snags it. Two-way down. Lefties can definitely be a little pole happy up there, especially with pitches that they see pretty well. That was a good example. He hooked an outside pitch, hit that ball in the air to right, just not with much authority. And first off is fouled off. The Dbacks hitless so far in the game. All this offense has just been locked down. Almost five full innings of shut out baseball. And that one way outside now one and two. Well, the offense has gotten going and a pitcher wants to go out there, have a real quick inning, get those guys back into the dugout so those bats can stay hot. Next pitch is outside. [Applause] Slug on belted. That one’s deep. That’s long gone. He’ll circle the bases. His first homer of the year. It’s 3-1. That one just sounded different. Hey, it might have been the loudest moment yet. Man, my ears are ringing. I can feel that swing from the boot. Oh, that one got in the jetream on a line drive. You saw the numbers on the backs of the jerseys of the outfielders, which is usually bad news. And all of a sudden, they’re back in this ball game. [Applause] Now at the plate, Bla1 Alexander. That is upstairs for ball one. [Applause] And that one fouled off. Ball on a strike. That one fouled off. Two down, nobody on. And now the count is even out to short. Jump throw. They get the out and that’ll do it. But the Diamondbacks do get one back with a homer. It’s now a 3-1 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. We’re back and they make a change to start the sixth. The new pitcher, Anthony Dclafani, just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. body and the batter will be Fernando Tatis Jr. Fernando Tatis Junior the pitch check swing and he went and that is strike one. This guy who grew up in big league clubous got to be a nice feeling Sigy when your father played in the big leagues and he passes down all that wisdom. There’s the strike 95 of that one. Yeah. And beyond that, all the other men in those clubous that sort of take you under their wing as a son or nephew and show you some of the tricks of the trade. It’s just invaluable that type of experience. And El Nino is stifled for the K. And now the first base, Luis for two in this one. Come on back. There’s a swing and a drive. That one’s back and one hops off the wall. Should be extra bases. And he’s got a double. Oh, that started it ended pretty quickly. No messing around right there. He hit that ball really well to deep right field right there. Got a pitch to drive and just stayed through it nicely. Didn’t quite have the trajectory to clear the fence, but you’re always happy with an extra base hit. One out, runner at second. Manny Machado up to the plate on a line. Base hit coming home. Here’s the throw to the plate. It’s offline. The run comes in. It’s 4-1. Everything came together for him. That’s about as textbook as it gets. Got his stride and load out of the way early. He stayed inside that ball and squared it up out front. Man, that was like he was in the cage hitting off a T. One down. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Jackson Merrill. Ball one on a pitch inside. [Applause] Got it. Here goes the runner up the middle. Ferdomo onto first. No chance at the double play with the runner in motion for the Padres’s. The designated hitter, Xander Bogarts. Now Xander Bogarts gets a chance to hit. [Applause] swing and a ground ball base hit right field. Here comes Machado around third. The throw is offline. He’s saved. It’s 5-1. Puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI. Just a simple ground ball the other way that had eyes on it, man. Sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel. put the ball in play and just hope it finds a hole. Two outs, runner at first. Now it’s the second baseman Jake Croninworth. One for two. Ball in the dirt and it gets away. And now a man into scoring position. Can’t imagine he’s too happy with that one on the mound. Just one pitch after giving up the single, he basically turns it into a double. [Applause] No, that’s a ball. [Applause] Next pitch is downstairs. And there’s the automatic. Two outs and one in scoring position. So now two on and two outs. His ability to draw walks has been something that’s been part of his career since day one. Jose, first and second, two outs. Jose Eacius gets a chance to hit now. [Applause] And that’s in there for a strike. Little slider that finds Lamar. Man, I mean, nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. Swing and a liner foul off to the right. Boggarts the lead runner out at second. Croninworth at first. Two out of the inning. The shorts stop takes the ball. [Applause] [Music] Two on, two outs. That missed by a lot. And that’s ball two. [Applause] [Applause] Oh, that fast ball drilled him. He had two strikes on him. Leftielder Gavin Sheets. So, up next, Gavin Sheets. Can’t forget the two-run shot he launched out of here in the fifth. Yeah, one of the biggest swings of the game, Boog, as he looks to make even more of an impact in this at bat right here. That’s a little bit low. [Applause] The one and that one hammered. That’s back. Gone. Grand slam. Another homer, his second home run of the game. It’s 91. Well, a great job here of staying within himself. You know that if you get a knock, you’re going to drive in a couple. So, stay focused on that. Well, he does more than just a knock. Hits the grand slam to drive in four. really good job at the plate. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. That’s it for Dcliffani and as he heads for the dugout, we’ll take a quick break. New arm on the mound when we get back. Now pitching now on the mound for the Diamondbacks. Number 43. Number 43. The southpaw’s been really good against left-handed hitters. Two outs, nobody on. Next for the Padres’s, Martine Maldonado. Foul ball there. [Applause] And that drops in for a strike. Two pretty nasty sliders to get this hitter in an 02 count. If you’re up there at the plate, you got to look up in the zone and spit on anything that’s down. [Applause] Pitch misses. Ball one. [Applause] That’s down and in. All three. Fernando Tatiz Jr. in the San Diego on deck circle. [Applause] And a foul ball. He stays alive. [Applause] Got him. That’ll end the inning after a lot of scoring. San Diego goes big with the grand slam. And this is now a 911 ball game. You’re dialed into the show. It’s a bit of a blowout now, which gives us a bit more freedom here in the booth. I’m not sure that’s a good thing. Do you collect baseball cards? You know, when I was a kid, I used to put them in my back tire of my bicycle, so it would sound like a motorcycle. Probably ruined some good cards back then, but don’t really have much of a collection. The other day I came across a binder that my wife had in one of the drawers and my son’s got some baseball cards. So, we’ll be looking to see if there’s any kind of retirement income in there. Activity in the bullpen for San Diego. Nick Paveta up and loosening in the pen. Marinacio getting loose as well. Late that time and it’s strike two. So my dad told me that he had a bunch of Mickey Mana rookie cards and a whole bunch of valuable cards and his mom tossed them because what you know what did she know? So I made my mom keep all my baseball cards and I really don’t have any that are valuable and that story stunk by me anyway. Line to right and that’ll be a base hit and that turns the lineup over. He doesn’t flinch at all with the front shoulder. Stays nice and closed behind in the count. hits this ball beautifully. And now the right fielder, Corbin Carroll. [Applause] and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Nobody out. Runner at first. Next pitch is outside. That one missed. Let’s get it going. And that one is downstairs. And now three and one. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. And ball four, two aboard. He’s making things difficult for himself right now out there on the mound, but you know, his confidence should still be high enough to get out of this, but he’s going to have to buckle down right here. Catel Marte up to the plate. That one misses. That’s five straight. No outs. Runners at first and second. Six straight outside the strike zone. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. Let’s go. And there’s a ball. Oh, they have had a hard time scoring in this one. The pitcher out there on the mound wants to keep attacking. Make sure that they don’t get any confidence. First and second here. No outs. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Gets a piece and stays alive. Spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another. Well, he’s having a tough time getting a pitch by him. As a hitter, you feel pretty confident that you’re seeing different pitches still able to make some type of contact. And that’ll load the bases. Man, that’s a tough one to take on the full count, but I guess he saw it really well. It’s a really nice plate appearance. And the Padres’s manager making his way towards the mound as he will make the move. That does it for you, Darvish. And he leaves with the lead after giving them some decent innings. We’ll be back with a new pitcher in a moment. Now pitching for new pitcher now number 66. Number 66. Well, you see the RA very solid and that doesn’t always tell you the whole story, but he’s been really good so far this year. Now it’s the shortstop Peralo. He’s grounded out a couple of times. There’s the strike. Well, this is a tough situation with the bases loaded, but the healthiest mindset is just try to get outs one hitter at a time. Swinging a foul out of play. [Music] Not close with that one. It’s a ball in two strikes. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. Look out. That ball was smoked. Man, I am so relieved that they have this netting down the line just to ensure safety for the fans. Last thing as a player, you want to look up and see a fan get hit. [Music] Ground ball right side. It squirts through. One run is in. The throw in. Save it home. And the runner scores from second. And it’s 93. Au Suarez up to the plate now. And a strike on the outside edge. Marte on second. Peromo out at first with nobody out. And a swing and a miss. No balls. Two straight. [Applause] in the air out to center. It falls in and that’s a base hit. They won’t test it here. Bases loaded, no outs. We don’t see this a whole lot anymore where hitters with two strikes are willing to shorten up, tighten up, and try to hit the ball back up the middle other way. He was trying to hit that hole, I believe. Very good at bat with two strikes. Base is loaded. Nobody out. Lordis Goreel Jr. stands in now for the Diamondbacks. And that’s him for a strike. Oh, and one. [Music] [Applause] Traffic on the bases with two already in to score here in the bottom of the sixth. [Applause] That just misses. Now one and two. [Applause] [Music] Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Couldn’t hit the fast ball at the knees. So they’re all loaded up now. Up next for Arizona, Adrien Del Castillo. [Applause] Grounded to third. Could be two to second for one. And it’s a double play to end the inning. So, two runs on three hits. No errors, but two are left stranded. Seventh inning coming up. It’s the Padres’s nine and the Diamondbacks three. Back here in the desert digging in. Fernando Tatis Jr. Fernando Tatis Jr. and takes low for ball one. And that one off the outside edge. Next offering is in for a strike. [Applause] Hit hard on the ground to short. Zips it across and they take care of Tatis for the out. Now batting first baseman Luis Arise. And here’s the first baseman, Luis Az for three. Chris, baseball today, so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers. But this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. And there’s a strike on the outside corner. When you look at the elite teams in a game right now, there is going to be the slug. No question about it. But the really good offensive teams combined slug with more contact with less swing and miss. One down, base is empty. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. That’s the second out. Well, that’s always the key to effective pitching is getting ahead in the count. And as a pitcher, it really allows you to start expanding the zone. hitters become defensive and all of a sudden that plate starts to get really wide. And what happens is because of the pressure, you end up committing to a pitch as a batter before you recognize what it is and that’s what leads to the strikeout. Machado in the box now. No balls in a strike. Well, an at bat can be a little bit of a dance strike one here, but few more pitches. We’ll see how it turns out. Yeah. And the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end. Swings here and blasts one left field. That’s down. One hops off the wall. And that’s a double. Well, that certainly feels good when you can win the bat after being down in the count up against it with two strikes right there. Kind of a risky pitch coming inside with the breaking ball like that. You have to bury it otherwise it’s not too difficult to get the back to it like he did that time. And in scoring position with two away. Jackson Merrill the next up for the Padres’s 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. And that is in for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. One of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins, the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter, the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter. Man on second, two down. Fouled off left side. [Music] Ripped to short. Peromo on to first. Third out. One left for San Diego, but they lead it 93. [Music] And welcome back to the ballpark. Set for the last half of the seventh. And now the first baseman, Tristan English. First baseman Tristan English. [Applause] Yeah. And I figured you would get Kate say into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. Late with the swing there. Oh, two. Next offering is downstairs. And that’s ruled a swing. It’s a strike out. Oh, that’s a pretty nasty curveball right there. And hitter didn’t look comfortable at all. clearly full. Tried to check his swing and went around, but could have been called a third strike anyhow. That’s how dirty it was. Nice pitch for the punch out. Alexander in the box now as he leaves that one up high. I can’t play around with him here. It’s a six-run lead at this point. Got to attack hitters even if you give up a solo shot. Swing and a highf fly ball hit the air left center field. This one’s got a chance onto the track and he makes the catch. Now batting center fielder Jorge Barrosa. Next up for the Diamondbacks, Jorge Bar Roa. Come on. Big hit. Let’s go baby. The other way. Sheets makes the grab and that is that. Diamondbacks down quickly. Still way back. It’s 93. And we’re back. And now the DHitter Sander Bogart. That one ripped. Fair ball around first. Heading for two. Throws to second in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. Couple of hits in a row for him here. First pitch fast ball in a great spot to do some damage and he squared it up nicely. Jake Croninworth the next up for the Padres’s. swaying at a ball popped in the air and that’ll fall for a base hit. Here comes Bogarts around third. The throw is offline and he’s in to score. It’s 103 short stop Joseas. So digging in now for San Diego. Jose Eacius. Line drive. Here’s Mare for one and he’ll eat it and be happy with the out. Now batting left fieldielder Gavin Sheets. Stepping in Gavin Sheets. He’s got a couple homers already. So, can he possibly do it again? Come on, man. Of course he can. Those two he hit were legit. And he looks pretty locked in right now at the dish. [Applause] and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Man at first one away. That one off the mark and that’s ball one. [Applause] in the dirt. Two balls, one strike. [Applause] Just missed. Glacius leads off first with one away. Grounder might be two. One at second, over to first, but he beats it. Up next for the Padres’s, catcher Martin Maldonado. Here’s the catcher to hit. Martine Maldonado. 0 for three with two fly outs and a strikeout. [Applause] That catches the top part of the zone. Strike one. [Applause] That one is absolutely belted and it’s a one hopper off the wall. Should be extra bases coming home. Safe. And it’s an eight run lead. Picks himself up an RBI. That pretty much split the zone down the middle. And those are the ones where you got to make a pay. Junior. Now it’s the right fielder Fernando Tatiz Jr. First pitch misses. [Applause] [Applause] And a foul ball. Tatis waits. That one not close. The countdown two and two [Applause] and delivers outside. Three and two. [Applause] to the right side, whips it to first and they take care of Tatis for the out. They limit the damage here. Two runs, three hits, no errors and one left. Last half of the eighth coming up. It’s the Padres’s 11 and the Diamondbacks three. Ready for the bottom of the eighth. And now the right fielder Corbin Carroll. Right fielder Corbin Carol. [Music] Swinging at a highf fly ball. Well struck. That one carrying and it’s gone. He shoots one out to right. His 22nd homer of the year. It’s 114. first pitch swinging and he got the fast ball. He knew exactly what to do with it, too. [Applause] When you’re working with this kind of velocity, so critical that you move the ball around, work quickly, and make sure that you keep that hitter off balance. Clearly not fooled by the location or the velocity. He was all over that fast. Here’s Catel Marte. And that one upstairs. Ball one. [Applause] [Applause] Swing at a high-fly ball that’s out to center. Merrill makes the play. One away. It’s a good recovery though after giving up the home run. Not allowing it to stay in the head but going to work at the next hitter. And a tough one at that. Heraldo Peromo will hit next. [Applause] swing and a miss. That’s strike one. Look, it looked like that curveball backed up on him and although it’s a mistake, it works out really good for the pitcher. The hitters timed it up, expects it to be to a certain spot and it just doesn’t get there. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. One out, base is empty and a run in here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. This to center field. Merrill coming on, makes the grab. Nice play after the long run. And there’s two down. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. [Applause] On the ground to short now. A jump throw. What a play. Inning over. But a solo home run will at least get this closer to respectability through eight full. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. And on the mound is the closer Kevin Gle. And he’s coming in to pitch on four days rest right here. And that might not be a factor at all in terms of being rusty, but he should definitely be well rested. Stepping in for San Diego, Luis Ar. [Applause] Carol makes the catch and there’s one down. Really nice job to get your first out of the ball game. Now batting third base man. With this kind of lead, he can swing freely. Try to hit the ball out of the park. Do what he loves to do. [Applause] Swing and a highf fly ball to left. Guriel handles the chance and there are two outs. Up next for the Padres’s, centerfielder Jackson. Two outs, space is empty. Jackson Merrill the next to hit. 0 for four. Two ground outs, a fly out, and a strikeout. [Applause] Hard hit left side. Handles. Throws the first and the inning is over. Three up, three down for San Diego. They lead it though 11 to four. Now pitching for Zack now as they hand the ball to a fresh arm to start the bottom of the ninth. Nick Pava and he’s been racking up strikeouts at a high rate this year. Typically at least one inning, so he’ll be tough to get to. Lordis Guriel Jr. [Applause] He swings and fouls one off the one. And that’s outside. Right through there for a strike. He’s great hitting the ball the other way and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. Okay, foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. [Applause] Goes down looking. Bell just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast ball right there. here and I don’t think he was taking it thinking it might be a cold ball or anything. I just think he was flat out frozen. Did not expect that location in my opinion. [Applause] And first off is fouled off. [Applause] Just missed. That was good pitch there. really had some run and finished a little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. [Applause] swing and a miss and he chases that one in the dirt in time for the second out. Good job to clean it up after the drop. Third strike. Very strong coming out of the pin so far as he punches out the first two batters he’s faced in this one. Getting straight to work. Man, it’s talked about a lot, but relievers are just so electric these days. He’s aren’t fun at bats if you’re a hitter. I’m so glad I’m retired. Now, here is Tristan English. That one close rule the ball. One and0. [Applause] And that is out of play. [Applause] They’re down to their final strike. One and two. This could end it. Yeah, the one two misses to even the count. That turns out to be a really good take right there. But you don’t want to end this game with the bat on your shoulder. Two down, nobody on. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. [Applause] Headed towards the corner. And a foul ball. [Applause] battling here as he fouls it away. [Applause] Got him. And that’s the ball game. Well, with this sixth win in a row, all of a sudden, you start to look around up and down in the lineup to your left, to your right as a player, and you say, you know what, we’re good. Uh we may have had some tough times earlier on, but this is a good team. and you start to expect this kind of play out of yourselves. We’ll see if this translates into a longer winning streak than it is right now. Final score in this one, 11 to four. For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show, I’m John Shami. Thanks for joining us. What the move?
