MLB LIVE🔴 Boston Red Sox vs Kansas City Royals – Aug 4, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

From historic Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, Major League Baseball on tap. It’s the Kansas City Royals and the Boston Red Sox. Boo Shami alongside Chris Singleton. Well, Singy, when you consider the top hitters ballparks in the sport, this has got to be one of them. I’ll say this, pitchers have to stay with their game. They can’t look over their shoulder and think, “I have to be fine and perfect on every pitch.” Continue to pitch to your strengths and you’ll come out of here with a good outing. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. Just about set. And on the mound now, Brian Beao and Singi. It’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strikeout. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think they can move through a ball game and you look off, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s gotten this one. Mike Garcia leading things off and takes a strike. And ball one swinging a ground ball and it goes just foul. The one two and there’s the ball. Slice the other way. That’s a base hit. So, a man on base to start the inning. Batting second, shorts stop, Bobby Wit Jr. Now here’s Bobby Wit Jr. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Beo goes 6’1. He features a sinker, a slider, a change up, and he works in a fourseamer. It’s a double play for crying out loud. The shorts stop takes a ball. That one’s spoiled and the count now two and one. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Not close with that one. And now three and one. Garcia gets his lead at first. Nobody out. Full count. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. Righty delivers. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Ninth pitch of the at bat do next. Ground ball could be two. There’s one not in time at first. It’s a fieldielder’s choice. That third first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino. And to the plate for Kansas City. Vinnie Pasquantino. Chris, he’s definitely going to finish the year with a new careerhigh in homers. We just don’t know how many he’s going to hit quite yet. That one hammered but pulled fouled. Man at first, one away. Check on the runner and he’s back in there at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. That’s a little bit low. One and two. And now it’s one and two. That one missed. He’s trying to stay down in the zone, but the hitter just will not chase. Now back in a two- two count. He’s going to have to go to something else to get him out. Rudder. Rudder takes off. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. And now it’s three and two. Recognize that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. And ball four to a board. Take your base. Well, a breaking ball in that 3-2 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. First and second, one out. Perez will hit next. That’s a strike. It’s 0 and one. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. Here’s a batter who for whatever reasons plays better on the road and that should help him here today. Next offering is down low. Way to lay off that pitch down. One and one. Next pitch misses way outside. Tough spot right here. A couple runners on. Two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. Next pitch, not close up high. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here with a middle of the order hitter up, runner in scoring position. He’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike. And a swing miss. It’s a hitter. You don’t know what to expect here in the 3-2. If he’ll throw a breaking ball 3-1, he’ll do it again. 3-2. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. Here comes Whit around third. He’ll score easily and it’s an RBI single on the board first. It’s one zip. Big swing of the bat right there to give him the lead. That was clutch. Timing on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. Randall Gritic now right through there for a strike. At this point, the clean inning is over. Got to settle in, focus on the hitter, and get out of it with minimal damage. Tough start for him so far. Already at 30 pitches here in the first. chopped left side quickly to second for one and that’s two. So, one run in the inning on this base hit. It’s an early one- nothing lead. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. And we’re back here at Fenway Park. Today’s starting pitcher, Jonathan Bolan. What do you have on him, Sigy? Well, he’s been a real quality starter for his club. And coming into this one, what stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year. It seems they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone. So, we’ll see how right-handers do against him in this one. Roman Anthony, the leadoff batter, as he swings to for strike one. And that one misses up and in. And the count is one and one. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and in just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it. Hit a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. The one two ball good two strike hitting right there. A bit of a lost start for some. So that was nicely done to beat the odds. Just found a way to slap that ball down the third baseline. That’s really excellent back control. And it kind of goes back to all those drills you see hitters do off the tee where it’s placed in different spots. That was just nice. And now it’s switch hitting third baseman Abraham Toro. He’s been a great free agent side and a foul ball. Ruer at first with no outs here. Ball. puts it in the air out towards left center. Whit gets under it. One down. Batting third center fielder. Check out the Red Sox lineup finding themselves down a run early. They’d like to punch back here with a run of their own. Absolutely, Boo. But I don’t expect them to change their approach because of that run. They still want to put together strong at bats. Be patient out there and get a feel for this starting pitcher. Now batting Jiren Durant. This has been a career year for him when it comes to driving in runs. And that’s in for a strike. Always tough to turn two on a speedster like this. It’s even harder with him coming out of the left-handed batters box. You really need something to hit hard on the ground that they can handle to turn too quickly. Comes up empty. Talk about tying a guy up. That was ugly. Anthony the runner at first with one gone in the inning. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. Oh, there he gets the slider in on his hands and it just eats him up. You know, it’s hard to get the bat around on a pitch like that in tight. You just feel like you’re crowded on the inside part of the plate. Can’t get any extension. That’s one he definitely should have laid off of. Here’s Trevor Story now. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. right through there for a strike. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the wall. He’s going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. And a swing and a miss. And that’s that. One left for the Red Sox. Still behind by a count of one to nothing. Second inning set to go. Here’s the catcher. Ready for me. Come on. Let’s go. Beo back to work. Pitch misses and it’s one and0. That one down the line and that’s just foul. Pretty good pitch to take a pass at in a one count. Just not able to square it up. And that skips in the dirt. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Well, that slider down and away. It’s just kind of a slow death with two strikes you’re looking to protect and halfway to the plate you know you’ve committed and you know you’re going to have no chance of touching it. Tell you what, sometimes you just have to tip and cap. Adam Frasier in the box with one away as he takes ball one. Rips that one to right. Ara makes the grab. Out number two, batting eight, left fielder Tyler Tolbert. Two down, base is empty. And stepping in, the rookie left fielder, trying to bunt his way on. And foul ball. That’s to third. zips it across and it’s a one, two, three inning. Nothing doing for the offense that time. We go to the bottom of inning number two. It’s the Royals one and the Red Sox nothing. Bottom of the second, Joe stepping in from Boston. Chris has been a good year for him, having already set a new career high for RBI’s season. That’s inside. That’s inside. Next offering is in for a strike. Our plate umpire Earl Hendris. Yeah, with Hrix Boo kind of interesting. He’s a good consistent umpire, but you do hear that he kind of favors one side of the plate more than the other. So, it’s really hard to know for sure, but I think that usually it has to do something with where he sets up prior to each pitch. Last couple of pitches breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. You can do it. Next offering upstairs. And there’s a foul ball. That one misses. So a lead off walk up next for the Red Sox. That’s to third. Garcia. There’s one and they get him easily at first. It’s a double play. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. Yoshida. And next for the Red Sox, Masataka Yoshida. late on that fast ball. It’s 0 and one. Two out. Space is empty. And that one fouled off. swing and he breaks his back and it goes just foul. That one is absolutely bel. He nails one out to right. His second home run this series and this game is tied. It’s 1-1. This game is breathing new life thanks to that home run. And that’s exactly what they needed. When you have a team that hits home runs at such a high rate, they can get back in the ball game so quickly. That’s why that leadoff walk was extremely costly. So, it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. Now, it’s the second baseman Son Raphaela. Ball one on the pitch inside. tied up here in the early going. This ball’s chopped on the ground. Whit over the first. That’s a third out. One scores in the inning coming on this solo home run. All even at one a piece. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. back here at Fenway. And now it’s Kyle Isbel Center Kyle Isel. All right, let’s go. This one chopped on the ground but fouled. That’s inside at one and one. Just that miss. That’s the ball. Two balls, one strike. Two-1 pitch is in there and the count is even. Two and two. Swings through that one. It’s a strike out. Mikel Garcia steps in for the Royals. He’s one for one. Lent off the game with a single. First pitch and that’s in for a strike. Fought off foul. strike three and that’s two in a row. That was a wellexecuted slider away for the strike out right there. First two pitches filled up the zone and got him ahead 02 in the count and at that point you can start expanding the zone as a pitcher. He made him chase and got the quick strike out. Bobby Wit Jr. steps in for the Royals. Just miss 10. Swings and blasts one deep to left center. And that one is off the top of the wall and into second easily with a two-out double. Now batting first baseman Viddy Pascantino Man Singi he hit that ball right on the sweet spot according to Stackcast the exit VO 110 mph. Yeah Boo I mean that right there is an absolute missile and he just put a great swing on it. Squared it up perfectly. Those are the ones that feel really good. And now the first baseman, Vinnie Pasquantino, worked a walk in his first trip to the plate. The other way and it stays fair. Wit scores. It’s 2-1. Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. So runner at second, two down. And now it’s Salvador Perez to the plate. Singled and drove in a run his first time through. And that one handled. Fires across the diamond. And they get Perez for the out. They limit the damage here. KC gets one on the double and it’s now a two-1 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. set for the bottom of the third. And now it’s the catcher for the Red Sox, Conor Wong. Conor Wong checks his swing. Now it appeal to first. No swing. Two up. And a foul ball. Makes the count. Two and one. And that gets the inside corner for a strike. up the middle. What a stop to his knee. The throw and that’s a great play for the out. Well, you can see right there he looks very comfortable going to the back hand. Nice diving stop. Gets up to complete the play. That’ll fire the team up for sure. Now here’s the Red Sox leadoff hitter, Roman Anthony. Outside low and that’s ball one. One ball, no strikes. And there’s a ball. Rolled softly, but that goes fouled. One down. Base is empty. And that one fouled off. I’m just waiting for a foul ball up here. I mean, this is one of the best places to be ready and to have a foul ball opportunity. We got a great view of the action and it finds its way through for a hit. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Now ready down the number two hitter Abraham Toro 0 for one with a fly out. That one fouled off. It was in this ballpark. You and I were working together in the 2013 division series and you caught one. Do you remember it? Be honest. Do you remember that? Whit off balance feed. There’s one and they bounce into two already. This one ends the third. One hit in the inning, but no one left. Three innings complete. It’s the Royals two and the Red Sox one. Back now at Fenway. John Chi with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Randall Gritic. Go back to Kansas City. Foul ball there. and he grounds one back up the middle. Tosses to first. Lead off hitter retired in the fourth. Now batting catcher Freddy Fine. Freddy Fine steps in for the Royals. His first at bat was a strikeout. So Boog, you went to college in this town. What was it like for you being a college student and having the opportunity to bounce over here to Finway Park and see some games? Yeah. In fact, 1990, a couple of college classmates and I, we were in college. We bought standing room tickets and then the next night got a chance to see the Red Sox clinch the East against the White Socks in that sliding catch in the corner by Tom Bdansky. The Red Sox would end up losing to the Oakland A’s in the playoffs. But that’s one of the things that I’ll think about in terms of memories from going to college and going to Fenway. Sends it across the first. Two quick outs here in the top of the fourth. Deceptive slider right there. Stayed in the tunnel a long time. Got that hitter out front. Rolled over it. Put it on the ground. Here’s Adam Frasier 0 for one so far. Frasier measures 5′ 10 in 190 lb. And they traded for him earlier this year. In there at Denise and the count one and one tapped back up the middle. Raphaela over to first. Frasier retired. Royals set down in order. Three up, three down for him there. And midway in the fourth, it’s the Royals two and the Red Sox one. Back inside Fenway Park. Bottom of the fourth. Digging in. It’s the speedy outfielder Jiren Durant. Jiren Durant. And that one is in for a strike at 95. And it’s 0 and one. Lined. And that’s a base hit. man aboard on the leadoff single. I could watch base hits like that one all day long and so could every hitting coach in the league. Just a nice line drive into center field. And now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first. Story now struck out swinging his first time. Fouled off. He was late. I love this part of the game. Does he really want to try and steal second against this catcher? I know he’s fast, but it’s pretty risky. Next offer way off the plate. Clearly didn’t come out of his hand the right way. Left that curveball way up. Tying run is at first. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth and a count one and two with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base trying to stay out of the double play right here. One, two now. Battling here as he fouls it away. Swing and a miss. And he struck him out. and he’s registered three Ks in this one. You know, Boo, you often think of sliders more for that horizontal movement, but most of the good ones have both vertical depth and that horizontal movement. And that’s what we saw right there. Good drop on the break and got him to swing over the top. Stepping in, Willard Abrau walked his first time. Bolan keeping an eye on him. And that is out of play. Eddie one ball one there. One ball, one strike. One ball, two strikes. Good job to fight that one off. Duran leads off first with one away. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. So interesting. He’s looking very comfortable out of the stretch after giving up the lead off single. Backto-back strikeouts. So they haven’t been able to move that runner up, get him into scoring position and try to have a better chance of scoring. I tell you, good job so far on the mound. He just needs one more out. Romy Gonzalez up next for the Red Sox. A bit behind with that swing. It’s strike one. Well, he’s been incredibly efficient in this one. First pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up until this point. ripped to third but handled and that’ll end the inning and the Red Sox leave one and they trail it here two to one back in Boston ready now for the fifth inning. And now here’s a speed threat outfielder number two. Beo back to work. Shortened the bunt and missed it. Going one and ball one. Bunting for a hit. Grabs it bare-handed. Throw to first. It’s there. And that’s a great play. Well, he gave the bunt a shot there, but not able to execute. Yeah, I think he rushed it a little bit. And when guys rush, can be a popup or can be bunted right back at a position player. Here’s the center fielder, Kyle Isbel upstairs. What about the fans at Fenway? Would they let you have it from time to time? They’re definitely intelligent baseball fans, which is awesome. They’re not waiting for something to happen. They can smell a big inning or anticipate a situation setting itself up into the outfield base hit. And now the lineup turns over with one away. One thing I found that was very cool was making a great play to end the inning and running off the field and getting a standing ovation. Even at times when you’re not a player on their team, as long as you’re not winning, they will celebrate and applaud a great play on the field. These fans here, they love and respect baseball. Digging in Mike Garcia swing and a highf fly ball. Well struck left field. That ball’s carrying and it bangs off the monster. The throw to third into second with a double. And they’ve got something brewing now. To third. Kag got him. Hey, as a former center fielder, I’m feeling pretty good right now. That’s an excellent job by this guy to come up throwing and deliver a strike to third base. Now, for the offense, that’s a tough one to swallow because you never want to lose a runner in scoring position by making an out at third base. Bobby Wit Jr. steps in for the Royals. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. runner at second. Two down and we’re in the top of the fifth on the ground to first and that’s just fouled. That one almost got him. Finish him. Strike him out. Ruther at second. Two down. That one is blasted left field towards the monster into the monster seats and gone. He flexes his power with that swing. His 16th homer of the year and they add to the lead. It’s 4-1. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. And here’s the first baseman, Benny Pasquantino. And immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. blind drive. That’s a base hit out of the left center field. And that means Salvador Perez will have a chance to hit. Wasting no time. Two for two now on the night. And just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Brian Beao won’t go any further tonight and it’s going to be a start that he’d like to get a redo on. Not his best. Back with a new arm in a minute. Now pitching. So out of the plate comes the right-hander Jordan Hicks. He last pitched two days ago. hits. Two outs, runner at first. Salvador Perez steps in for the Royals. And that one is inside. Right through there for a strike. The 1-1 is fouled off. Fouls that off to the left and will do it again. That missed by a lot. And that’s ball two. Pasquantino off of first with two away. Ground ball left side and foul ball. They stopped the lead runner at second. Now two on with two outs. Now batting right fielder Randall Gritick. And now Randall Gritick for two in this one. There’s the strike. 95 of that one. Two aboard, two outs. Boston’s bullpen with some activity. Garrett Whitlock up and loosening in the pen. Weisser getting loose as well. That’s a ball. It’s a big opportunity right here, but I love the way he’s slowing the game down. He’s shrinking his zone, making sure he gets the pitch that he wants to hit. Out to short. They take the force out. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. Two-run shot for the Royals this inning. It’s now 4-1. You’re dialed into the show. ready to go for the last half of the inning. Now, the left fielder, Masataka Yoshida. Masataka Yosha. Thinking about Yoshida, he’s never going to be the biggest player when he’s on the field, but that doesn’t mean he can’t hit. He gets on base and doesn’t strike out very often. That combo makes you a valuable asset to your club. Snags it on the run and there’s one away. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. Raphael stands in now and watches strike one ball. Next pitch is downstairs and delivers outside. Oh, they have had a hard time scoring in this one. The pitcher out there on the mound wants to keep attacking. Make sure that they don’t get any confidence. Slice down the right side. One out. Base is empty. Swing and a popup. He’s there. He’s got it. That’s out number two. Good hard fast ball up in the zone right there. They look really good coming in, but so hard to get on top of as a hitter. And the Royals manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make the move. Jonathan Bolan will depart. And that’s an excellent job from the reliever in the starting role today. Gave him some length. Back with a new arm after this. Now pitching for and we’ve got ourselves a pitching change. Steven Cruz. Power slider guy. Boo. He throws it hard and gets a lot of late movement so it’s tough to pick up. And stepping in for Boston, Connor Wong grounded out his first time up. There’s the strike. Pitching has been pretty dominant in this one, but you got to be careful. Not working with too big a lead. They could get right back in this ball game if you’re not careful. Next offering is foul back. Swing and a miss. Struck him out and a nice inning of work there as he sets him down. One, two, three. Nothing doing for Boston and they trail it 4-1. And we’re back for Freddy for me. And first offering is fouled off. Well, these Royals, simply put, are producing a lot of quality swings. They’ve hit seven line drives already, and even though some of them have been for outs, there’s nothing wrong with delivering consistent hard contact. That’s almost always going to lead to positive results. Gets it to first. Lead off man retired in the six. So, digging in, Adam Frasier. Slashed foul down the right side. That’ll hook off into the seats. Red. The 01 just missed. And now two balls in a strike. That’s a strike thanks to the sweeper. on the ground out to short. Tosses across to first. Two quick outs to open the top of the six. Good sinker low on his own right there and produced exactly what he was looking for. Fall on the ground. Nice ground out. Here’s the left fielder. Just missed. Two down, nobody on. And we’re the top half of the sixth. Come on. Drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck and it one hops the wall. The throw into second and that’s a two out double. Everything came together for him. Nice line drive to the side there, but he didn’t spin off of it. That’s the key. You still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that. So runner at second, two down. So up now for Kansas City, Kyle Isbel. And that one is downstairs. And that is ball one. Two outs and one in scoring position. Come on. They had a foul ball. Come on. Bounced to the right side and that chance handled. Throws the first in time. That’s out number three. So, no runs here in a base hit. No errors and one left. Top of the order. D up in the home half of the six. It’s the Royals four and the Red Sox one. Back here in Boston. Bottom of the six. And now the DH. Roman Anthony. There’s the strike up high. 0 and one. Action in the pen down there. Taylor Clark up and throwing. Shriber warming up as well. And it’s even up. One and one. Right through there for a strike. Got him. And now one away. frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter. And I’m sure that’s going to sit on him for a little while. You want to be ready to hit the fast ball. Sometimes you can overink things and I think that was the case right there. Toro up to hit for the third time as he lays off inside ball one. That’s a ball. Base is empty. One away here in the bottom of the six. Foul tip. Oh, that got her umpire. And it looks like he got him upstairs. That one catches the zone. That’s strike two. And that’s in the dirt. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming off AF’s walk. Fans another. And that’s three straight strikeouts. Two strikes. Many times hitters looking out over the plate. You’re looking out over the plate. You’re also going to let the ball travel a little bit longer. And a fast ball zipped on the inside corner just locks you up. Jiren Durant up next for the Red Sox. Durant really thriving with the bat this season here at home. That’s in there. 0 and one. Swing and a chopper out to short. Whit over to first. Three up, three down. Inning over. No runs, no hits, no errors. We’re through six full. It’s the Royals four and the Red Sox one. Now pitching. Greg Weisser will take over here. pretty tight game. So, they’re looking for quality pitches out of them right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Back to the top of the order. Mikel Garcia steps in for the Royals. Garcia. And the pitch a little bit low. Ball one. ball. Misses the zone for a ball. That was the sweeper. So, definitely a little wild right out of the gate. Well, it could be a little tough coming from the bullpin mound to this mound, but you’ve got to find a way to get ahead in the count quickly. He hasn’t. We’ll see how this bat turns out. That one misses. So, a leadoff walk. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire at bat. So, up next, Bobby Whit Jr. can’t forget the two-run shot he launched out of here in the fifth. Yeah, one of the biggest swings of the game, Boog, as he looks to make even more of an impact in this at bat right here. And that’s fouled off. Garcia aboard here at first with nobody out. The kick and the pitch. Runner goes strike in there. And that’s a stolen base. Not even close. You know, having a good lead is so key when you’re stealing bases. even if you’ve got great speed. But if you don’t have great speed, but can get an extended lead and a good jump, you can steal bases on a catcher who can really throw it. That’s a nice job right there. A short stop takes the ball. The Red Sox with some bullpen action. Garrett Whitlock, the hardthrowing righty is up and loosening. fouls it off. Still one and two. Man at second. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. And now the first baseman, Vinnie Pasquantino. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. One out, a runner at second here in the top half of inning number seven. Swang going to ground her foul first base side. Strike him out. Two two in the dirt. 22 now and the sweeper misses. Runner at second here. One gone. And ball four, two aboard. Oh, you know this guy wants to swing it, but he’s showing some good patience in this one. It’s the second time he’s taken both Salvador Perez. Salvi steps into the box now. And that’s in there at the knees for a strike. Check swing called strike and it’s nothing and two. Big pitch right here. He’s going to try to make a pitch. It’s going to produce a strike out or a ground ball double play. And that’s outside. Rarely will you see a pitcher just to waste a pitch like that. The batter wasn’t even tempted to swing. Every pitch needs to have a purpose so that it can set up a following pitch to help you get that out. Way outside. Two and two. Two walks in the inning already. and he just doesn’t seem comfortable out there. Like he can find the right mechanics and then repeat them. Next pitch misses. Three and two now. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. On the ground to third might be two. Fires to second for one. And that’s two. So they’re able to work around a pair of walks in the inning midway in inning number seven. And it’s time to stretch. It’s the Royals four and the Red Sox one. Pitching for We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Taylor Clark. Definitely a guy that pounds the strike zone, makes hitters earn their way on base, and rarely gets in trouble because of free passes. Trevor Story comes up to the plate. for two with a pair of strikeouts. Stop Trevor Story. And the pitch is outside. Ball one. And another ball. Struggled a little bit in this one. Couple of strikeouts earlier, but doing a much better job in this at bat to get ahead and find a good hitter count at 2 and 0. The 200 is in for a strike. In this situation, you expect the batters to be a little more patient, possibly take until they get a strike. With that, you don’t want to miss your opportunity to get ahead early in the count. He didn’t right there. And now two and two. Two and two is the count. And that one upstairs. Count is full. swing and a miss and he is down on strikes for the third straight at bat. Just a mid90s challenge fast ball right there. Not much to it. And I’m sure he’d love another swing at it because he was in a very hitable location. Those are the swings where you can sometimes start to question yourself as a hitter and say, “How’d I miss that?” But you know what happens on the ground and it goes just foul. The Red Sox trailing by three here in the bottom of the seventh. Next pitch way upstairs. Pretty standard high 02 fast ball right there if you’re smart but look for something down in the zone but not too far. Don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt. Handles throws to first and that quickly two away. That play won’t be trending on social media later on but it’s still important to execute it to perfection. This game is a lot harder than it looks. Partner Romy Gonzalez getting ready to hit. Pop foul out of play off to the right. There’s the swing and a miss. Oh, and two. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Two down. Doan up and in. Now one and two. He’s great hitting the ball the other way and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. That one 95 to finish him off. Offense held in check there. Eighth inning coming up. It’s the Royals four and the Red Sox one. Now pitching. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eight. Garrett Whitlock coming on to face a righty here. And he’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers in those matchups are very good. And now the right fielder Randic. Three ground outs already. He’s 0 for three. Right through there for a strike. That’s in there. No balls, two strikes. Quickly into an 02 count. Both pitches were down in the zone. I think you set your sights a little bit higher because you’ll have a tendency to chase if you look down in that area. And now one and two. That to right. Man at first, nobody out. Next is the Royals catcher Freddy Fine. And there’s the strike. 0 and one. Next offering misses down and away. Let’s get out of here. Oh, and he hit him. Take your base. Now batting second base. And next up for the Royals, Adam Frasier. 0 for three in this one. And there’s the strike. Well, in this situation with runners on, you got to get ahead in the count so that you can dictate the rest of the at bat. Nice job right there. Swing and a miss. First and second, go outs and we’re in the top of the eighth. And that’s outside. A change up missing. The countdown two and two. Nice stop. The feed for one and two. What a play. They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leaguers. They make tough plays look simple. Now the left fielder one for three. That one found hard the other way. All right, let’s go. Gets under and pops it up. Raphaela on his way over and that’ll do it. Royals leave one, but they lead it four to one. Back now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth, John Shriber. He pitched yesterday and we’ll see him once again. Number 46, John Shriber. Here’s the left fielder, Masataka Yoshida. He’s already homerred here in this one. The Red Sox in striking distance, but have some work to do. Boog, it starts with the laid-off man. I need a good at bat out of him right here. And there’s the strike. No need to offer it that pitch until you get to two strikes. It’s just a low percentage of success when you want to try to go after that down and away pitch. And that’s in for a strike. Got to keep things airtight defensively right here. On your toes, ready to make a play. If you can get this to the ninth with a three-run lead, it should be a W. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow right field and that’s a foul ball. That missed inside. One and two cow. Next offering is outside. And that one almost got him on the ground to the left. And that’s a fair ball. Love how he became a really tough out with two strikes right there. Not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play. That’s a team at bat right there. Nice job of staying back and letting the ball repeated. Here’s the second base, Son Raphael. Drilled out towards left center field. And it’s off the green monster. Throw comes in. Runner stopped. Second and third. Nobody out. Backto back base hits. Absolutely blasted that one into the gap, but just didn’t have quite enough to clear the wall out there. Maybe a little more elevation under it and it carries over. But that’s a swing you’ll be happy with every time. And maybe they’ve got something going here. Trying to get back into this one. Next to hit, Connor Wong right through there for a strike with the tying run at the plate here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. got him swinging. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had him fooled. Roman Anthony, Roman Anthony now at the plate. That one way outside and that’s ball one. Well, it’s critical right here that they bear down and turn in some quality at bats. Try to chip away at that lead because if it gets to the ninth, that closer’s coming in. Swing and a hard hit grounder to third and it’s just fouled. That was close. Next pitch is outside. really been able to slow down the game tonight with his at bats and the biggest one he’s had so far. He doesn’t look anxious at all. Tying run at the plate. Line to left. Brings it in. Runner tags for home. Fires it to the plate, but it’s offline. He will score. That wasn’t your standard sack fly. He barreled that baseball. Just couldn’t get it to drop in. Here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. John Shriber won’t go any further. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout and we’ll be back with a new pitcher. So they bring on their closer in the eighth, Carlos Estz, and he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. Joel stepping in for Boston, Abraham Toro. Corner infielders guarding the lines trying to prevent extra bases. Here come the rally caps. It’s late, but it’s far from over. You see the velocity 97 with that fast ball. And that one fouled off. swings and miss has struck him out. They get a run on two hits, no errors and a man left through eight full. It’s the Royals four and the Red Sox two. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Jorge Al. And this is his 40th appearance of the season. So he’s starting to log a decent amount of work this year. Kyle Isbel steps in for the Royals. That’s in there. That’s strike one. Boston’s bullpen with some activity. Garrett Crochet, the lefty, looks to be getting himself ready. And he hits a ground ball right side. Raphaela in plenty of time to first. Now one gone in the ninth. Now batting third baseman Michaelel Garcia. Mikel Garcia steps in for the Royals. Just off the outside edge. Ball one. Base is empty. One away. You’re in the top of the ninth. And that’s in for a strike. Cut on and lifted in the air. Duran. He makes the grab. Two down. Now batting. Short stop. Bobby Wit Jr. Two out. Base is empty. Bobby Wit Jr. steps in for the Royals. He’s already homerred in this game. Sing. You talk about a guy that has all the skills. The range is really good, but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays. This one in the air center field. Durant has a beat on it and makes the play and that’s out number three. Nothing doing here this half. Heart of the order. 345 will get their shot in the bottom of the ninth. It’s the Royals four and the Red Sox two back here at Fenway. And now Jiren Durant. If there’s nobody on in front of him, you know, a single for him many times is a double. This guy is off to the races, ready to steal a bag when he’s on first base. And that misses ball one. And because of that big power arm, he’s able to play a little bit deeper, make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond and still get a pretty good runner. That’s impressive. And that one a little below the knees. Two and one. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. And that’s downstairs and outside. Here’s a swing and a line drive and that’s a base hit into right field and that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. Showed a lot of fight with two strikes in that AB. Nice line drive to side. Fed it out front, but just stayed through it nice enough and ripped it into the outfield. And now let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases. Here’s Trevor Story. And that one is in for a strike. If it were an average catcher behind the plate, I’d say take second base. But this isn’t a catcher you want to run on. His quick release is unreal. The tying run at the plate. Fouled off down the right side. A short stop. Takes a ball. missed inside with the curb. Still just the second batter of the inning and on the mound. He’s already thrown 13 pitches. They got him working hard out there. missed with a change up and now three and two. So here we go. Base runner at first could be running on the pitch. He’s got good enough speed to steal the bag to get in scoring position even if it’s a swing and miss at the plate. Tying run at the plate. Foul ball and it remains a full count. and a swing and a miss and he’s gone for the fourth time tonight. Typically that high fast ball if it’s close to the top of the strike zone a hitter if he’s prepared for it can get to it. But that one just had that little jump at the end which indicates there’s a good spin rate on it and it didn’t decrease in velocity as that hitter’s internal clock would expect it to. And that’s why you see the swing and miss. And here is Willard Abra swinging a miss as he was laid 01 with the tying run at the plate there. The home team trying to pull it out. Tap foul at the plate. Outside low and a count one and two. Tough to take a two strike change up that just missed. I think they get frozen. Swung on. Belted. Carrying well. Gone. into the deepest part of the park. He rocketed that one out of here. His 21st of the year. And we are all tied up. It’s 44. Listen to these fans. This place is absolutely buzzing right now. You can feel the energy all the way up here in our broadcast booth. took on the big part of the yard for that home run and just barely got it over the wall. I thought for a second he brought it back out there too. Gave it a great effort, but you know those plays are so tough to pull off and I’m sure he’d love to have another shot at it here in the bottom of the ninth, one out. Now here is Romy Gonzalez and that traps in for a strike. trying to keep good speed off the bases. Back and forth we go. A seessaw battle in the late stages of this one. That one way inside. Straighten him up a little bit. Tied at four. Chopped on the ground. Two out. Now batting left fielder Masataka Yoshida. So two down now and here is Masataka Yoshida. Yeah, that skips in there. Next pitch in for a strike and the count even at one. Well, he had a pretty good look at that pitch and not sure exactly what tied him up there. Couldn’t pull the trigger and perhaps the best pitch he’ll see in this at bat to hit. Oh, that hit him. The throw is still in time and they come away with an out after a tricky start to the play. But this clutch home run gets us even again. All even now at four a piece. Back here in Boston on to extra innings and here’s the first base Vinnie Pascantino. Alcala back to work and that’s downstairs and it’s one and0. Well, it’s kind of deflating. You blow that lead in the bottom of the ninth. So here’s a new opportunity. Hit the reset button. try to get some more runs and then close it out in the bottom half of this one. That one ripped but foul. Man at second. That one not close. And that’s ball two. Fast ball on the inside corner for a strike. Well, it looks like he’s wanting to work the upper part of the strike zone. What does that mean? Top hand better be working for the hitters. Adjust that side a little bit. Give yourself a chance to hit. Tied at four. That’s outside. Three and two now. Salvador Perez in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. Fouls it back with two strikes. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Ball four. He walked in and that keeps things going. Well, they didn’t give him anything to hit and now with runners on first and second, they’ve set up a double play opportunity. So, not a terrible result. Go ahead run on base. Perez the next to hit. Gets the slider in there for a strike. Fly ball center field. Durant on the move. And that is a big first out. Randall Gritic will hit next. Now batting right fielder Randall Gritick. Fast ball for a strike and it’s 0 and one. And I know you want to be patient as a hitter, but you got to be ready to jump on the first thing straight. And he got one right there to let the bat on his shoulder. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Swing and a miss. Struck him out of the slider and there’s two gone. Nice work there to get the strike out. That’s a big second out. I’ll tell you, this home crowd will be fired up. They can get out of this and leave that go ahead run stranded in scoring position. This is a big moment in this game. And here’s the catcher, Freddy Fine. And fouled off. Slap the other way. Foul. Well, if he’s going to do something special right here, it’s going to have to happen with two strikes. Swing and a miss. And he got him. They miss a big chance to take the lead here late. Sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve, but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results. And right there, thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam. Pitching for back here in extras and a new pitcher on the mound in the bottom half of the inning, Sam Long. Well, walks have certainly been an issue for him this season, so we’ll see what kind of command he has. runner in scoring position, no outs. Now it’s the second baseman, Son Raphaela. Drove it off the wall last time, just missed out on a home run and misses inside. And that one fouled off. Not even close there. Ball two. That one down the line. And that’s just foul. Here’s a two- two. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. He’s gone off speed. He needs to elevate here with two strikes out of the zone. Two two now. That one backed up the middle and it gets through. coming home. Fires to the plate and he dives in with a winning run and the Red Sox walk it off in extra innings. You know, he had to feel the pressure. Winning run on second base. Found a way to make solid contact and the winning run comes across to score. Everyone going crazy. Exciting finish to this game today. Close one here today and your final 54. A oneun extra inning win for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon.
