Padres vs. D-backs Game Highlights (8/4/25) | MLB Highlights
Well, for Brandon Fod, I I feel like he needs a course correction. He was dealing in the early part of the season, but lately he’s had a little trouble his last 11 games. The team is only four and seven in those games. He’s pitched to a 6 and 12 RA and given up eight home runs. Get a strike out when you need it. Brandon is not what I would consider to be a strikeout pitcher, but there will be situations where he needs to go to his a stuff to try to record a strike out. And another walk. Ball four from Brandon Fa. The Padres’s in business right out of the shoot here in the top of the first inning. Back-to-back walks to begin the night for Brandon Fa and he is putting himself in a very precarious situation. Two on and nobody aboard with Machado coming up. And you could certainly say that Fault is fighting it right now in terms of his command and strike three call. Just a sinker middle of the plate and Machado wasn’t expecting it. Lot of movement on this two seamer off the plate and it comes right exactly where Macan was setting up. McCann always with that great target and he nails it. Padres’s have scored 47 runs in their last eight games. The offense has been clicking and Jackson Merrill a big part of that little swing and bought Macan is on it. Runners advance but VA gets out number two and now he’ll work to Andrew Bogard. Swung on. Ground ball to short. It’s backhanded by Peromo. His throw to first is in time. And a nice job by Brandon Faul to work around back-to-back walks to open up the first inning. JP Sears making his Padre debut tonight. The 29year-old lefty. Four seasons in the big leagues. He’s an interesting one. We’ve used the term crafty left-hander before. Think it really applies here. This is a guy with a five or six pitch mix. We’re excited to see JP. I mean, clearly a guy that was um, you know, valued and we got over here in the trade with Miller and um, a lot of favorable things have been said coming from the group, you know, with Oakland. Um, you know, CS and Emo, their pitching coach and manager, you know, very favorable and we’ve seen him in the past. Looking forward to see him pitch tonight. First pitch and he dunks it into left center. Martinez forward to get it started. But from the right side, he’s really, really aggressive. And Sears just looked like he was trying to throw a strike over the middle of the plate. Martave was ready for it. Boy, this top of the order for the Dbacks. This these are the Marte, Carol, Purdomo. These are the guys that can really score. Laser shot into center field. A base hit. Just a stinging line drive. Pounce the outstretched leap of Bogarts. And just like that, the two top hitters for the Dbacks aboard. Well, Gino Suarez and Josh Naylor both in Seattle. The middle part, the thump of this lineup is a little thin. So they really need Lurtis Guriel Judy. Ground ball up the middle. That’s going to sneak through into center field. Marte rounding third. He will score. Carol gets to third. Gurio tries to get to second and he’s in there ahead of the tag. If it stands, it’s a one- nothing lead for the Dbacks. And they still have two in scoring position. You know, this is the chaos. Put the ball in play and watch everybody run. And this is like a three hopper that gets through the middle. Bogart’s playing in the pool. He goes more towards the center of the field. Carol draws the throw from Merill. He gets into third base and Guriel with some good base running following the play and following where the ball is going. He gets into second. That was just really well done all around. Guriel gets his 51st RBI this season. Swing and a miss. Sears goes upstairs. A heater and on pitch number seven, he strikes out Tyler Lleier for his first K of the night. Two-2 on the way. And a swing foul tip right at home plate or actually no James McCann did not get a piece. Hit the dirt. Freddy Fine couldn’t hang on to the pitch. A strike out nonetheless. And in the inning for Arizona, you got blocker to chase those pitches up. He got Marte to chase that fast ball up. Both for strikeouts. Here’s Corbin who singled his first time. Pace is still loaded and only one out. High in the air near the line and left for Lariano. Blaze is at third. Here he comes. Alec heads for third as well. Play at third and he is in there. RBI for Corbin and it’s two nothing Diamondbacks. Aggressive tag right there in front of the left fielder by Alex Thomas. So two outs, nobody on for Manny Machado. And Manny rips it into left field and base hit. First knock of the night for the Padres’s. Guriel cutting it off. Machado trying for two. The tag from Marte and he’s out. Padre is going to challenge the tag at second base. Does his foot go around the tag there with his toe? His right toe on the uh right field side of the bag. No contact there on the Oh, we might have safe. A great slide. A great maneuver by Manny Machado. Have to review the call on this overturn. The runner is safe. Nice. San Diego will retain their talent. Nice job, Manny. Nice slide right there. Jackson’s got 47 runs batted in this season. About a third of them have come since the All-Star break. Wow. And Merryill hits it hard into left field. That’s a base hit. That’ll get Machado home. Andre are on the board. Merryill tripled yesterday. He doubles in a run here tonight. And a one-run game at Chasefield in Phoenix. Well, after two quick outs on the ground, Manny Machado double and Jackson scalds this one. That’s a cutter right down the middle. That ball is smoked. 106 off the challe of Jackson Merrill. Tyler Lleair, the first baseman, struck out his first time. Lleair launches one way back high in the air and there it goes. Tyler Lleair with his first Diamondback home run. A moonshot over the bullpen. That was a skyscraper for Lleair’s first seven off the pack. And you’re right, that ball was up near the rafters. I was just hoping it would stay fair. It was clearly fair down that third baseline. What a blast. Boy, did that have to feel good. Big smile on his face. He caught a sweeper and demolished that ball. A chance for Corbin who has singled. He’s got an RBI sack line. Liner to right. Tatis has to play it off the wall. Barose is home. Mart into third and Corbin Carroll’s got the RBI double. Boy, that thing was belted. 106 off the bat. I was hoping for a better carum off the wall and watch him leg out another triple, but we’ll take a double and an RBI right here. Holy smoke. I mean, Fernando Tatis is about as good as they get out there in right field and he gave up on that one quickly. He saw how hard that ball was hit and he wasn’t going to be able to catch up to it. So, one out for Sears and now that’ll deal with little bloop trying to get down and it finds green grass. Marte’s home. Corbin’s at third. Another RBI single for Goreel and it’s 5 to one. Brandon having trouble getting this final out of the sixth. A pair of two out base runners for the Padres’s ahead of Jake Hornworth. That’s lined into right. Barosa knocks it down. Sheets will score. Lariano’s into third. Three straight have reached for San Diego. All with two outs and it’s a 5 to2 ball game. It might be time to get Brandon Flaugh out of there. He looks like he is on fumes. And so Tory Lavell will have to go get Brandon fought and will get another Diamondback debut as rookie Andrew Hoffman is on his way in. And the righty’s first pitch swung on and hit out to right playable. Barrosa moves back, makes the catch, and how easy is it to be a Diamondback? One pitch, third out recorded. And just like that, the threat comes to an end. Now here is Alec Thomas and what will likely be his last bat of the night. Alec Thomas gives it a ride. It’s on its way. He’s got another one. Alec Thomas has really figured some things out at the plate. That’s his eighth of the year. Left on left home run for Alec Thomas. That’s his third homer in six games. Padres’s are down to their final out at Chase Field. Deep to center. Alec backing up. Still backing up to the wall. Patter’s got it. A home run and a finish with a flourish for Alec Thomas. And the Diamondbacks win the opener against the Padres’s six-2. As Beckis gets his first big league save. Boy, what a catch by Alec Thomas out there in center field. He was on a dead run toward that center field wall. The stutter steps right before he hits the barrier for the final out of the game. Nice play. Well, we came on the top of the show talking about Alec Thomas and how things have gone Alex’s way at the plate. He looks like a much more patient, better hitter. The results have been there.
