REKAP: ⚾️ Chicago Cubs 3-2 loss to Cincinnati Reds. ‘Trainwreck city! No idea what is going on!’

Welcome into the recap of a brutal Cubs loss 32 to the Reds on Monday evening at Wrigley Field. I’m David Kaplan. It’s brought to you by our great partners at Winrust. They are the exclusive home of Cubs Checking. Click the QR code on your screen or winrust.com/cubs and get your very own Cubs checking account. That was a terrible, terrible loss. I do not know what is going on with this Cubs offense, but they look feeble. They look terrible. And if this doesn’t turn around very quickly, they’ve got no chance at running down a red-hot, really good Milwaukee Brewers team. Uh, let’s get into this. It’s also brought to you by our great partners at Tasty Trade, folks. Kyle Tucker coming into tonight and he’s supposed to be one of the best hitters in baseball. Kyle Tucker coming into tonight since July 1st against fast balls only hitting 160. 160 and I watched him on his last at bat get blown away by fast balls. I mean not even close. You want to know what the Cubs top six hitters tonight were? Plus we’ll add Michael Bush in there. So top seven because they only got one at bat for Justin Turner and Nick Lollo the red starter came out early in the game said I’ve got a problem with my finger. I have a blister out. They get him out of there. So they switch from Turner to BCH. Guess what? You count those seven guys. They went 1 for 21 tonight. One for 21 tonight. Absolutely abysmal offensively. Abysmal. I don’t know what is going on with this team, but Kyle Tucker looks completely overmatched. Sea Suzuki, who we all thought should be an all-star at the All-Star break, he looks completely overmatched. PCA does not look good. He did not start the game tonight, but PCA did come into the ball game once Lola was knocked out with that blister. And he struck out, of course, the first time and then he also got hit in the eighth inning. And then Nico her hits a hard line drive right at the second baseman and PCA gets doubled off. Ninth inning, Cubs do absolutely nothing. Nothing offensively. They had some opportunities. The sickest one was in the seventh. They’ve got a man at third. Dansby Swanson up. He hits a hard ground ball and it comes right near the bag to Brian Hayes who they just got from the Pirates last week at the deadline. Rifles it to first. Danby Swanson, I gave him credit yesterday. I’ll give it to him again. Running hard. They call him safe. And guess what? Terry Franon, Hall of Fame caliber manager, says we’re challenging that he never touched the bag. It’s exactly right. He came up that short trying to stretch to touch the base. How do you miss first base? How does that happen? And guess what? You turn on the after review. The runner never touched first base. He’s out. Inning over. Take the tying run off the board. Castro had scored. And so it’s 3-2. Eighth inning, you get the double PCA off of first. Ninth inning, you go down as feebley as possible. And there’s your ball game. Uh Caleb Theobbar gave up a hit. You had that was the one that gave the go-ahead run in. You had Ian Hap make an error in left field. You had Dansby Swanson boot a ball. He did hit a booming two-run home run that gave the Cubs a brief two to one lead. But add it all up, this team looks lost. They look overwhelmed. They look like they’ve got no juice whatsoever. just an awful, awful state to see the Chicago Cubs in when they were playing such good baseball for such a long set of uh months. Now, let me tell you something else. Mike Sarroka started tonight. This was the big acquisition we had to have at the deadline. Mike Sarroka, everyone else is going out and getting Joan Durant and Ryan Hellley and all these different dudes. And guess who we get? Mike Sarroka with I thought this guy has a little bit of an injury history. Okay, let’s see what happens. He did strike out the side in the first after two innings. Ah, shoulder hurts out. So, I went to AI. I said, “Hey, Grock, what is Mike Sarroka’s injury history?” Listen to this. Michael Sroka has had some tough injuries, including tearing his right Achilles tendon twice, which sidelineed for nearly all of 2021 and 2022. He’s also dealt with a shoulder issue, a hamstring problem, and forearm inflammation that ended his 2023 season early. He pitched last year for the White Socks, who were the worst team in baseball. And then he went to Atlanta and then we had to have him. Couldn’t get anybody else. Michael Soka leaves with a shoulder problem. I would be willing to bet he’s headed to the injured list. Uh let’s take a look quickly at our pitching matchup sponsored by Hooters we call winging it. Uh Ben Brown was very good tonight. That is the one thing you can hang your hat on tonight for the Cubs. Sroka two innings, one hit, one run. It’s earned three Ks. And then Ben Brown, four innings of two hit, one run baseball with five Ks. And for the Reds, Nick Ledo lasted one and two/3. No hits, no runs, 1K. And then they used a collection of relievers with Barlo picking up the win. He’s five and0. Our studio 41 look ahead. Guess what? Tomorrow night 7:05 Cubs and Reds again and it’s Shota Imanaga time. If you can’t win with Shota Imanaga, you got big big troubles. They have to find a way to win a baseball game cuz Atlanta’s not very good and the Brewers are rolling. And they’re down there again for the next two nights. And this look ahead’s brought to you by Studio41 Home Remodeling Showroom. Go to studio41.com. This kitchen, they did it. They’re awesome. Uh and finally, our player of the game tonight. I mean, nobody was really awesome tonight for either club. The Cubs were just bad. They just were worse than the Cincinnati Reds. Um, I guess I’m going to have to give it to uh I’m not going to give a freaking MVP apt. There’s your promo code. No MVP. Train wreck city. Train wreck. Have a great night. Take that.

The Chicago Cubs just keep finding ways to look bad. They had another tough night offensively, scoring just a pair of runs, and leaving multiple opportunities on the basepaths. Adding insult to injury, new pitcher Mike Soroka left with a shoulder injury and is headed to the IL. Kyle Tucker looks lost offensively as do Seiya Suzuki, Michael Busch and Pete Crow Armstrong. Kap says ‘i have no idea what is going on with this team.’

Take That!

  1. Swanson is the only person on earth who doesn't know what his stride length is. That was yet another pathetic play by Dansby. He's been horrible.
Good thing we traded to get Soroka for 2 innings.

  2. Kap says he does not know what's going on with the offense? The Locked on Cubs team. Stating the obvious. The team is cold. No hits. Struggling. Need to change the batting order. Here's a clue. Nico takes 2-0 fast ball down the middle. Suzuki takes strike one down the middle. Carson Kelly takes a first pitch fastball down the middle. They ALL swing at the very next pitch. It's in the dirt. What's the problem? They don't swing at fastballs down the middle in a hitter's count. Suzuki gets to a full count and swings at a pitch over his head. The problem is, the team is passive and not a smart team. The manager of the Cubs? Not a leader. He should ORDER the entire team to swing at first pitch strikes. ORDER them to swing at a fastball down the middle when it's 2-0. JD calls it Ambush. In the next breath he says Carson Kelly is not afraid to draw a walk. This is the 4 hitter. Taking meatballs down the middle. But he's not afraid to take a walk. I never want to hear my clean up hitter is trying to work counts. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. My 4 hitter should be looking to do damage and swing at fastballs in a hitter's counts. Your batting average when down 0-1? Is .207. Across the league. WHY would you ever be down 0-1? Except on a pitch 4 inches outside that the UMP calls a strike. You put the ball in play, you swing at strikes. You do NOT take strikes, especially if you're not bright enough to realize that you do not automatically have to swing at the 2nd pitch of the AB. Which the WHOLE Team does all the time. They take a meatball and swing at the next pitch. Over your head? So what. In the other batter's box? so what? In the dirt? So what. They all swing at the 2nd pitch that is not a strike but they all take the first pitch. Right down the middle. JT hit the first pitch Sunday about 400 feet. Tonight? First pitch strike. He takes it. The whole team needs to have the mentality of attack. If you get in a fist fight, who normally wins? The dude who throws the first punch. This ain't rocket science. If hitting is hard, try to make it easier.

  3. Jesse Rogers told you this a month ago Kap. If they dont invest in closers (like all the rest did) it meant they were happy to be in the playoffs but didn't believe in more. You were bamboozled by Jed and you believed in the hype that we will go for it and Tucker will be re-signed. Jesse Rogers was right from the beginning

  4. You people aren’t happy unless you are miserable. Arguably the second best team in baseball. Back in April if I told you in August the Cubs would have the second best record in baseball and would be a virtual lock for the playoffs you would have been thrilled. Nah, scratch that. You still would have been miserable.

  5. Obviously the offense is the story tonight and for the past month but remember this off season when the cubs were close to trading for Jesus Luzardo but Jed refused because of his medical?

Unbelievable. Oh, and Schwarber hit his 40th home run tonight. Wasn’t good enough for the Cubs though!

  6. I hope that all the people out there who were chirping about how the Cubs need to sign Tucker ASAP have learned their lesson.
He has only had one home run since June. No really.
Also, the signing of Soroka looks like it's going to end up being a total disaster.

  7. First of all, whether the team admits it or not, Tucker is hurt. Suzuki is lost and has no discipline at the plate. PCA is regressing. On top of that, Mr Ricketts/Hoyer lost the team at deadline. You go all in and trade three players for Tucker to win it this year, and you strikeout at the deadline and get Mike Soroka when you lost Steele for the year. What a joke! They keep lying to Cubs fans and sell tickets. The Brewers are simply playing better and the Cubs will make a run after they get 7-8 games behind and at best will make a nice wild card entrance to please this shoddy front office. Congrats Cubbies!

  8. Jed dropped the ball. May as well let Tucker go after this season and start tearing it down for a rebuild.

    Our 1-4 hitters went 0-14

  9. I wonder where the people were talking shit to me when I kept talking about Jed getting Cabrera, Suarez and Kelly, then add a Mason Miller? Get rid of Berti and Brujan, then use Shaw and Moises as bench players. Now look Jed didn’t do anything meaningful except getting Castro. The pitching in general is garbage and the offense sucks. But hey Ricketts will still be rolling in the money from a sold out Wrigley.

  10. Should have traded Kyle. Cubs will not make the playoffs. The Division Championship is already out of reach. Crow hasn't stolen a base since before the all star break.
