Houston Astros will make World Series – Dana Brown tells MLB Now on Astros’ new roster in postseason
Hey, it’s Brian Kenny. Thanks for joining us. What’s up, BK? How you doing? I I missed the Where’s the map of the world behind you? I I always anticipate the map of the world. I’m a little disappointed. That’s in my That’s in my home office. This is uh I’m on the road with the team right now. All right. I wanted to see you know like the Pacific and you know the everyway uh Carlos Koreah back when when did that even become a possibility? Yeah, I mean we were looking uh you know for an infielder at at uh you know at the deadline as well because you know we knew Pettis was hurt. we we knew it was a significant um hamstring strain and so look we started looking toward uh Carlos and and we we we went through the process and looked like this thing could we could pull it off and so we knew how much he would mean to this club and so we you know we kind of got busy on it and uh we we were able to work it out. Yeah. He’s not an infielder, right? He’s like a foundation of the franchise before your time when you were there. But how much does that factor in? I mean at an ownership level and everywhere else. Yeah, look, Carlos is uh you know, he’s been great here. You know, the getting him back into the clubhouse with his makeup and his presence is big, you know, and so had to go to ownership, of course, and uh you know, talk dollars with him, but you know, look, Jim Crane’s been committed, you know, to to winning and the windows always open here and so we’ll do what we have to do to try to push this team forward and he was very open to it and then we were able to get it done. I I would expect you know Carlos has been very good but very hurt over the last few years just you know not as many games. Concerns about injuries performance as he moves forward. What are your concerns there? Yeah look so look at the end of the day we felt like his his games played were good. He had that one year where he was hurt and so you know we feel he was health healthy. you know, we know the person the makeup and what the type of grit and grind he’s going to have to to to pose and so we felt good about it. The the medical came back clear and so look we we’re just excited to get him back. You mentioned Asak Paredes uh out with a strained hamstring. Is he doing rehab, not surgery, what’s the prognosis with him? Yeah, so we have two options. You could either do the surgery or rehab. He chose the rehab. It’s his choice. Um, and so he’s going to rehab it. He’s going to try to work to get back. You know, he’s dedicated. He’s missing he’s missing this. And so I think he’s dedicated to trying to work to get back and that’s probably why he made that decision. He thinks he can get back and so we’re we’re all for it for it. And so, you know, hopefully it works out for him. But we knew it was a significant strain. Yeah. And um No, go ahead. Yeah, we knew it was a significant strain and so we we we talked to him and he made this decision. All right, Yordon Alvarez, what what’s the latest on him? Yeah, he feel really feels really good right now. He’s going to take BP on the field today. Um, and so not not here, but he’s probably about six 50 miles north of here at West Palm, but he’s not going to be here in Miami. But he’s going to take BP on the field, and we’ll know a little bit more after today. He feels really good right now and so that’s a really good sign and so we really could use him getting back and um you know we’re excited to get the news after this BP today to see what it feels like. Okay. Yeah. A fracture in his right hand. He’s been out since May. Sounds like he’s close. Possibility of being close. Sounds like he’s very close because he’s he’s swinging the bat right now with no pain. We have to increase the intensity. So that’s going to be field BP. Then it’ll be BP off the machine. Then it’ll be live BP. So each level will increase the intensity and so if he can get through this with no pain u you know that that uh that means he’ll be back in the near future. Yeah. Dana I know you’re doing this again without Alvarez largely. Bregman, Kyle Tucker gone. Joel Sherman who’s on our show a lot actually called you the zombie Astros cuz you’re the Astros yet you’re not the same Astros yet you’re still quite dangerous. So then they did it up on on MLB Central too. Uh but it it was Joel who put it up there. It cracked me up. I don’t know how aware you are of that, but how have you been able to maintain as a division leader with all those losses and play the way you have? Yeah, at one point we had 18 guys on the IIL. Look, I give big credit to our coaching staff led by Joe Spatada. Joe’s done a great job of, you know, just getting these guys to buy in and to let them know, look, this is a winning tradition here. The, you know, we brought up some young guys. those those guys have been stepping it up, you know, like even last night, Alexander threw a great game, you know, really stepped it up after losing three in Boston, big game uh pitcher uh last night. And so that those kind of things really help the club when you when when you have these young guys coming up. Remember we went to Arizona, you know, we had Matthews up for a few weeks. He had a great weekend that weekend. And so, you know, it’s been the young players that have been coming up and stepping it up. You know, you we talked about bullpending. uh at the outset of the show uh you’re a little more traditional, but you have a top five bullpen hater and Brian Abrau have been great. What would your approach be? What do you speak about when you talk about tactics in the playoffs if you make the postseason? Yeah, look, when you have two big guys on the back end with those two guys and hater, that’s really helpful. Like you if you can get to that those guys, it’d be great. You had guys like King and Souza stepping up and that’s really helped those two guys as well. And so we have this mix and match of the back four that have been really good for us this year and that’s really been helpful. And you can get into this postseason. You get some of your starters that are coming back like Javier, you know, we got him coming back. We got Eric Getty coming back. And so that’s why we focus more on the hitters at the deadline. And so we get these hitters uh that we got at the deadline. You mix it with the pitchers that you have coming back. And look, that’s a pretty good force going forward. And you know, we feel really good about it when we get these arms back is things are going to be different for us. So, a man in scoring position. Here’s Sanchez. That ball hit hard by Sanchez. First run of the game for the Astros. Jesus Sanchez against his former team. An RBI double. His first Astros double is against his former team. It’s one- nothing. So, now you’re turning it over to Caro. Caro with a line drive to left. That’ll be down for a hit in the score. Sanchez. Astros lead two to nothing. Carlos Kareah has an RBI single to left. Oh, there we go again. Dana Brown of the Astros is going to join us soon. We come back here right now with our crew. Uh Jesus Sanchez picked up by the Astros and Carlos Koreah age 30 season back as a Houston Astro and again going back to the glorious era which he led really. He was their one pick their 1-1 uh kind of rejuvenated the whole franchise in their total rebuild. What do you make of him coming back now at this point? Well, I think once they lost Paris for the rest of the year, they needed to figure out something on the left side of that infield and Koreah was certainly thinking outside the box. They also knew that the only team Carlos Koreah was going to wave that no trade clause for was the Astros. So, the Twins, if they wanted to get rid of that salary, or at least 70% of it, uh they were only going to be able to trade him to the Astros, they got a left-handed A-ball pitcher or reliever back. So, it’s not like this was about getting back talent. This was a salary dump. The Astros were in a situation where certainly it’s a player they know as well as anybody. They needed him. He was willing to play third base. Uh which didn’t really surprise me. This is a kid who grew up loving Alex Rodriguez. You watched him do that in his career at some point. Uh when it was sort of the right move. Gray has talked about maybe finishing his career as a third baseman. Uh it’s a good fit. You know, he’s going to fit into the market. Fay is going to have happy homecoming. There’s a hero when he gets there. He’s a hero there. Uh you know, I I like the move. He Carlos Korea by the way makes it’s anecdotally but we we have we have data if you want it. He makes basebally plays all the time. Our segment baseball plays Koreah’s on it. He’s very heads up. His slash line it’s strange Anthony because his slash line is is still quite good but he’s missed a lot of the time over the last three plus years. He hasn’t been he truly hasn’t been the superstar that he was when he was with the Astros. No. A lot of that’s because of injuries. And this year, I would say the power numbers have certainly not seemed like what we I don’t it’s not like Carlos Gray was going out and hitting 40 home runs a year for you, but the power game was that was a big part of his game. He was that big shortstop part of that new, you know, kind of mold where he can make plays. He was pretty solid defensively, but he also brought the thunder with the stick. And now moving him over to third. I wonder if that frees him up to try to see what he can do, you know, offensively. maybe change his mindset a little bit because at third base there’s going to be hopefully and I shouldn’t say there’s there will be less wear and tear in his body. He’s still making a lot of plays over there. But to be honest with you, I just feel like this gives him an opportunity just to focus a little more offensively. Um because at third base it’s more about that first step reaction making that play. He’s got good hands already. So then just making the throw across the diamond allow him to focus a little more offensively. Maybe he can bring a little bit more of that back now that he’s back with

They have a good chance bc the AL is wide open. As long as they avoid the Texas Rangers, who scares me as an Astro fan, they will have a shot.
