Coach Mike Tomlin on liking the urgency of the group (Aug. 5) | Pittsburgh Steelers

Man, a lot of really good work today. I like the way they they approached it. We didn’t warm up to it and that was one of the things we talked about this morning. Uh going in and out of off days, man. We just can’t waste time and I just felt the energy and and urgency in the group in terms of how we work. We had some really good competition. Um got another shot or two minute, which is important, man. We just got to keep hitting situations because at the end of the week, we’ll be in the stadium and so um you know, not enough time to cover all the scenarios. We better stay after it. Uh, but I like what we did today. Um, you know, no new news on a lot of those guys. Um, status that we’ve been talking about. A lot of people working their way back. Joey Porter Jr. was a a partial participant today for an example. Um, I guess the big news is Will Howard left with a hand injury that’s being evaluated. Um, John left with some uh knee soreness. We’ll evaluate him as well. That appears to be uh less significant. Uh, but we’re examining Will Howard. We’ll see where it takes us. to throw. How did get hurt? Um I think it was a CQ exchange, but I didn’t have direct eyes on it, so I’m speculating. Mike, was Robert Woods of the opinion he scored at the end of that two-minute? I’m sure he was. Is it his throwing hand? Uh yes, it is. Mike, any update on on high school? Um he’s got a groin. Um but I don’t know the length of time. Um you know, it’ll be a couple of days at least for sure. Uh we’ll play it by ear. What’ you see from Aaron in the two minute he ran, Mike? you know, he’s in complete command. Uh I’ve seen some things that I’ve seen from the opposing sideline over the years in terms of his ability to take advantage of substitution changes and so forth. Uh he’s been doing it at a high level for a long time and so not surprised by any of that. On that interception, did 26 get there a little early? Uh we’ll take a look at the tape. Are you going to start on Saturday, Mike? Man, I can’t see past Wednesday at this juncture. At this stage of development, Saturday’s a long way away. Seriously. U we’re just trying to have good days. Anyone else? Coach, talk about the uh progress of Jack Sawyer so far. He’s done a nice job. Um he’s highly competitive. I’m equally as impressed with what he’s doing in special teams because essentially he played DN at at college and so he’s playing on his feet and playing in some space and doing a nice job. All right. Thank you. You talk about uh getting guys out to look at guys behind them. Is part of that also balancing offense and defense at times trying to get specific matchups in play? No, that’s less significant for me. Um, you know, you can spend a lot of time trying to control matchups this time of year. Uh, we just put guys in groups and work and understand that sometimes people going to be in tough matchups, sometimes they going to be in easy ones.
