Not to mention a serious lack of understanding on how team control and arbitration works
TBF, given the current structure of Major League Baseball, they are entitled to all the best players once their first contract is up.
We could sue them for slander, but from what I am told, “truth” is a viable defense.
Like I posted in that thread, I 100% think there is a deal that both makes sense for Skenes and the Pirates (from a baseball economics POV). It’s just a question of whether Skenes would want it and Nutting would approve it.
I think 6×150 or 7×200 with a flat yearly salary is a really logical middle ground. It lets the Pirates keep Skenes for longer at a yearly amount that they should be able to pay (based on what they’re paying Keller), while it gives Skenes a ton of guaranteed money now and lets him hit UFA again at a prime age. It makes a ton of sense from a baseball economics POV, but I have 2 questions here:
1. Will Skenes want to sign that kind of deal with the current state of the Pirates? He may need some sort of “we’re going to go all-in to win while you’re here” guarantee from the Pirates.
2. From Nutting’s perspective, will signing Skenes bring back enough revenue to justify paying him that price? Logically I think it would, especially with me assuming that they’d trade Keller in addition to signing Skenes to that deal. But I don’t have their finances so I don’t know for sure.
I hope it gets done because I think it makes a ton of sense, but there are still definitely some questions that prevent it from being a slam dunk.
I am not sure they said anything untrue. They know the Pirates don’t spend and they called it out? What is the problem?
Big market teams and their fans aren’t the problem. They feel ‘entitled’ because it’s an inevitability. Your frustration is completely misplaced.
They are entitled to Skenes as far as I can tell. The league sucks.
They’re not wrong. OPs just a baby that can’t accept a team like the pirates can’t and SHOULDN’T afford Skenes. That’s the summation of everything in that thread. Except not as inflammatory
The Pirates don’t deserve Skenes. If Manfred cared about baseball he would force Nutting to sell or trade Skenes. I don’t blame anyone for being upset Skenes is stuck on a laughing stock. The MLB is a joke allowing teams to operate like this. Yes I am a Pirates fan, but they don’t deserve fans.
