MLB LIVE🔴 San Diego Padres vs Arizona Diamondbacks – Aug 5, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
just about set to go now. And today’s starting pitcher, Eduardo Rodriguez. What should we keep an eye on here? Well, you know, this guy wants to be better than that. I mean, the ERA is bloated. He understands that he’s got to put his team in a better position to win ball games. And at this point, you have to forget about your own individual stats and you have to go out there and attack and try to get that W. And if you do that, you’ll look up and most likely that ERA will have dropped over time. Pulls that one foul and a pitch. This one popped up right side. Lley makes the play. One down. As we take a look at the Padres’s lineup, the guy who’s been huge for them over the last month plus, Luis Arazz. Well, Boo, there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does. I mean, batting over 400 with runners in scoring position. Are you kidding me? I I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic, but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not and first offering is fouled off. Here’s a guy at the plate and I’m expecting to have a good game. He always seems to play better in road games. Now that’s smacked to right center. Makes the grab on the run and there’s two away. That was just a great jump and route to the ball. Well, it had to be. He was going to cover all that ground and bring in that sinking liner. That’s the way it had to be done. Nice job. Here’s Manny Machado. What a season it’s been for him. He has supplied a lot of power and that average. Now he’ll bull it to second base, but he’s got it to end the inning. Nothing doing there for the Friars. And now the Diamondbacks will get their first turn at bat. No score. You’re dialed into the show. Back here in the desert and on the hill, the big righty Mason Miller. Chris, his strikeout rate this year among the best all time. He’s truly one of the elite strikeout pitchers in the league. I mean, strikeouts per nine off the charts. So the opposing team, they know they have their work cut out for them anytime they’re facing this guy or a guy like this that’s going to get the swings and misses. Pretty much in a class of his own when it comes to that category. Miller a 65 righty 26 years old and he was a third round pick in 2021. 101 on the gun swing a miss one ball. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one two. Don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you get hurt. Swing and a miss. Got him to go up the ladder for the K. This is Corbin Carroll. Hard on the ground to first. Arise steps on the bag and a couple of quick outs. third. Okay, let’s check out the lineup. A really frustrating showing for them in their last game. Lots of traffic on the bases, but they left a ton of runners on base. Couldn’t cash in their chances. Chris, they had plenty of chances. There’s nobody to blame it on but themselves offensively. They just did a poor job converting in those situations. You have to figure out what’s your plan going to be. Maybe watch some tape from the last game. Make the adjustment. So if you get those opportunities in this one, you’ve got a much better chance of scoring some runs. Peraldo Pomo stands in now. Looks at that one inside. Foul ball there. Two outs. Right through there for a strike. Was a good change up to hit up in the zone. I don’t think he recognized it. I’m sure he’d love to have that one back. Triple digits on that last pitch. Diamondbacks down quickly. We played an inning. No score. Top of the second. And now a center fielder. Jackson Merrell. Jackson Merrell. Rodriguez back to work. That misses off the outside edge. Lifted in the air down the left side, Barrosa and out number one on the grab. Batty fifth shortstop, Sander Bogarts. Here’s Bogards. Now he’s already set a new career best for stolen bases in a season. Chris, just a slow ground ball this time. Over to first. Bogart’s retired. Good fade and sinking action of that change up. Got that hitter to roll over. Left fielder Raone Lauraniano. Here’s Raone Lauraniano. Off to a great start. He’s really cruising out there on the mound. He’s got a chance to get through these first two innings with under 20 pitches. that could set him up to go deep into this game. That one catches the corner for a strike. Well, the key to his success is getting ahead early in the count. He cannot afford to go deep in the counts. Doesn’t have a ton of swing and miss stuff, so he’s going to have to work efficiently. Third out. Padres’s down in order. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. Back here at Chase Field, bottom of the second. Now here’s the cleanup hitter for Arizona, Lordis Goreel Jr. He’s got pop, which is a little sneaky because he’s so comfortable with taking his base hits to the opposite field, but he can jump you if you make a mistake. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. Patrick Johnson behind the plate. Patty Johnson, the sunboo, but I’d ask permission first before I called him that. Does a pretty good job back there. Occasionally we’ll see a couple of sideways looks from players, but that kind of comes with the territory, right? And he swings over the top there. What about some nos? Like you can’t call the umpire blue the way you do in little league or high school, right? Yeah. Even in the minor leagues, you’ll learn quickly uh you call the umpire blue, you better learn his name. And uh that’s just part of being a professional player and even a major league player. makes the catch and there’s one down. As the game has moved along, we see more and more information supplied by teams about the umpires. I’ve been in clubhouses where they have pictures of all four umpires, nicknames, hometowns, and as well hobbies listed just so you can kind of small talk the umpire a little bit. That’s great. Tyler Lleier batting with one down takes the strike. Not even close there. And one and one. Just missed. Pitch misses and the count is three and one. Nothing nothing here in the bottom of the second. That one in triple digits. We got full count. Lifted in the air left field. Pretty well struck. Lauraniano pulls it in and there’s two away. Batting six. Third baseman Blaze out. There’s a third base, Bla1 Alexander. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively, but runs pretty well. So, when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. And there’s the strike. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. Edge of the zone for a strike and the count is 0 and two. What about him playing another position on defense? One that would require a little more range. Absolutely. And I think if push came to Ah, that’s strike three and the third out. So we take a break. Nothing new for Arizona. We’ll move to the third with no score. And welcome back to the ballpark. And now the DH Croninworth Croninworth. Croninworth a seventh round pick by the Rays in 2015 out of the University of Michigan where he was a two-way guy and in fact the Rays used him that way. Tosses to first. That takes care of Cronin. Batting eighth. Second base Jose. Here’s a veteran second baseman, Jose Glacius. That’s down and in. One out. Base is empty. Gets the outside corner with that one. Swag and a ball hit out towards left center field and that will fall. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Oh, he didn’t get much of that one, but it’s going to look like a line drive in the box score tomorrow. That line drive isn’t going to light up Statcast or anything like that, but it gets the job done. And he just kind of caught it on a weird spot of the bat, but he didn’t get cheated with the swing, that’s for sure. And now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first. Turned on but foul wide of third. Double swing and a miss. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt, man. At first, one away. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. Well, definitely a borderline pitch right there. He didn’t look too convinced as he headed back to the dugout. You know, those are tough ones to let go as a hitter, but with a human umpire calling balls and strikes, it’s always going to be on you to protect yourself with two strikes. So, the San Diego batting order turns over. Fernando Tatis Jr. will hit next. That’s way outside. One and0. Glacius leads off first with two down to the inning. Snap throw to first. Glaciius back on a dive. That one finds the zone and the count one and one. Just missed. Two gone, but the go-ahead run is at first. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. on the ground right side, boots it, gets off a throw. They don’t come much closer than that. Bang bang play to end the inning. One left for San Diego. Still no score. And we’re back. Bottom of the inning. Now it’s the switchhitting outfielder, Jorge Barrosa. Jorge Bar Roa. And a strike right through there. That one in triple digits. That breaking ball drops in for a strike. Dangerous spot for that slider right there. Didn’t seem to quite finish out front and get that sharp break. Tell you what, he doesn’t want to throw that pitch again. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. stood absolutely no chance on that slider right there. And I don’t mean to laugh, but that’s a tough one. I mean, pretty much a perfect strikeout pitch. I mean, it looks like a fast ball middle in kind of has cutter action and it just bunches you up to whereas you can’t get your hands through and the barrel to it. And not much you can do unless you recognize the spin early and you spit on it. Alec Thomas now and he takes a strike. Still tied at zero. Last of the third. Swing and a miss. That one at 101. Oh, this can be kind of frustrating for the hitting coach right now. This lineup seems to be swinging at everything. Missed with a change up. One and two to count. fans. Another and that’s three straight strikeouts. Backto back strikeouts to start the frame and that’s now three in a row. Yeah, he’s really settling in and getting a feel for his pitches, throwing them where he wants to right now. So, we’ll see how long he can keep this streak going. Now, a chance for Jos Herrera. That misses and that’s ball one. Two down. Nobody on. Hit in the air. Left field. Lauraniano makes the catch and the inning is over. Onto the fourth. Still scoreless. Back here in the desert, Luis Arise stands in. He’s kind of an outlier, especially when guys are consciously sacrificing contact to deliver power. First pitch misses. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. And that’s pushed foul off to the left and out of play. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Sing, one of the things that’s interesting is that guys really don’t worry about swing and miss from an offensive standpoint anymore. So when you see somebody who contacts the ball like this, do you think of that as plus value? Absolutely. if he’s doing damage now, if he’s rolling over and and grounding out, then it’s a different story. But yeah, if he can put the ball in the gaps or over the fence 100%. And Manny gets a piece. Yeah. And the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end. Swang and a miss. There’s that change up. One of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins, the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter, the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter. And Machado able to spoil that pitch. Fights that one away. Still one and two. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going and a one-two. Next offering misses down and away. Well, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where a pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. Yeah. And I figured you would get caught into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. Strike three and that’s two in a row. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Jackson Merill. Flying to left his first time. That one fouled off Merrill in his second season, just 21 years old. A former first round pick in 2021. Off the plate inside. And now it’s even one and one. The one-1 is fouled off. Gets a piece and stays alive. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. Swing in a line drive. Base hit out into center field. Now batting shortstop Xander Bogarts. Now Xander Bogarts gets a chance to hit. 0 for one. He ground it out in his first at bat. That one’s in there. 0 and one. Two outs. outside with a breaking ball. Just missed. And that one fouled off. Two and two right side. Carol brings it in and that is that. Padres’s leave one and we are still scoreless. Back here at Chase Field ready to go bottom four. Here’s Catel Marte. Catel Marte. and he can’t come up with it. Still manages a throw and they get him. The misplay made it a bit messy, but they clean things up for the out. Corbin Carroll. And now Corbin Carroll 0 for one. He grounded out to first his last time. Ball one, no strikes. All tied up here in the bottom of the fourth. Fall off foul. Come on. You can do it. That one ripped way back there and it is gone. And they jump ahead in the fourth. It’s one nothing. That one just sounded different. It might have been the loudest moment yet. Man, my ears are ringing. I can feel that swing from the boot. When a guy’s got a real hard fast ball, you can’t overswing. All you got to do is get the bathe head to the spot. If you do, he supplies the power and you’ll get to jog around the bases like he did right there. And the batter will be the shorts stop. Peraldo Purdomo in there at the knees. All ones the count. The shorts stop takes the ball. So a foul ball makes it one and two. chases the fast ball up the ladder. Struck him out. Here’s Lordis Guriel Jr. designated hitter. Lordis Guriel Jr. in for a strike. Going one. Oh, he’s looking great so far. It helps when over 80% of your first pitches are strikes. He might be able to go the distance if he keeps this up. Next pitch misses inside and it’s one and one. Two outs. Base is empty. Swing and a miss. And he got him. Make it seven strikeouts for him. DMbacks get one on the solo jack. It’s now one- nothing. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. All set for the start of the inning. Now here is Raone Lauraniano. Lauriano Rodriguez back to work. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. And a breaking ball misses outside on a line. Base hit. So a runner aboard to start the inning. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Just a solid swing right there. Caught it out front and ripped it into the outfield for the base hit. Those always feel great. now. Here’s Jake Croninworth. Lauriano on the move. Pitch misses. Throw to second and great jump and the tying run is now in scoring position. Here’s what I think the manager’s thinking right now today. We’re not driving the ball. It’s hard to get extra base hits. We’ve got to make something happen to get a runner into scoring position. That stolen base. Excellent call. Now all it takes is perhaps a single to put a run on the board. That one drifts inside. Swinging a drive deep right field. Carol on the move racing back. Pulls it in on the warning track. Runner tags at second and he’s in safely at third with one out. Up next for the Padres’s, second baseman Jose Ilacius. Jose Eacius the next up for the Padres’s. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season, so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. Fouled off down the right side. Strike two. Lauriano stands at third with one gone to the inning. Spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another two gets a piece there. will do it again. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Runner on at third. One gone. Ground ball up the middle. Marte throw to first in time. showing us right there why he’s considered one of the best middle infielders in the sport. That’s always a tough play going up the middle on the back hand. But what really made this play happen was that quick release, smooth exchange, and that was as smooth as it gets. And it had to be with the wheels going down the line. And now it’s Elias Diaz. to the right side. And that goes foul and misses inside. Come on and miss. Struck him out. He’s notched four strikeouts now. So it’s one run on one base hit. No errors and no one left on. Home half of the fifth coming up. All tied 1-1. And welcome back to the ballpark. John Shami with my buddy Chris Singleton set to get us started. Bottom five, Tyler Lle. Swaying and a miss. That one at 99 and one. swings through that. This game has been so tight. Feels like the next team to score will win it. Off the mark there. Going to count one and two. O2 fast way out of the zone. I think he’s trying to speed him up. Got to stay back. Off speed’s probably coming. inside at 100 and it’s two and two. Close pitch there and he’s kind of wondering where it missed. You know, getting a feel for each umpire strike zone is something that pitchers and hitters really have to think about and work on from game to game and sometimes from at bat to at bat. Swing get a ball popped up. Arise has it sized up. Puts it away for the out. Now batting third baseman, Bla1 Alexander. Bla1 Alexander stands in now for the Diamondbacks. And there’s a foul ball. Base is empty, one away. Last half of inning number five. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Nick Pavetta up and throwing. Estrada getting cranked up as well. Fouled off. He was late. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. and foul ball. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Now that Jorge Barrosa stands in now for the diamond bounce. He struck out swinging at his first at bat. Come on. Right through there for a strike. Next one is off the play. One and one. Fast for a strike. Swing and a miss. Struck him out and a nice inning of work there as he sets him down. One, two, three. Diamondbacks down quickly. Still tied 1-1. Top six. Now it’s Fernando Tatis Jr. Fernando Tatis. Fernando Tatis Jr. signed by the White Socks 2015 for $700,000 and then eventually moved in the James Shields trade in June of 2016. RIP to first. Nothing you can do about those as a hitter. Even though you know that, they still drive you absolutely crazy. Luis Araz the next up for the Padres’s for two in this one. The offense needs to start showing some fight against this starter. He’s doing his thing out there. They’re going to have to push back at some point and make him work a little bit harder. That’s hard hit on the line and a couple of quick outs. Now batting third baseman Manny Machado. Manny Machado up to the plate. And that’s in there at the knees for a strike. Two down, nobody on. And we’re the top half of the sixth. swing at a highf fly ball that’s out to center and that is that. So no runs, no hits, no errors and no one left. 891 scheduled in the bottom of the six. All tied 1-1. Nick Paveta on a pitch here. He’s got a wicked breaking ball in his arsenal and it’s definitely one of his go-to pitches when he needs an out. 7 Nick Pavetta. So digging in, Alec Thomas for the Diamondbacks, center fielder, Alec Thomas. Close, but called the ball. And that’s ball one. And now a little barking back towards the umpire. Clearly thought he got that outside corner on what was a pretty big pitch. Sometimes that only makes it worse for you moving forward, but it can also open up that location in the future if the umpire thinks there’s a chance that he missed it. Activity in the bullpen for San Diego. Wanda Peralta, a lefty, looks to be getting himself ready. Adam getting loose as well. Balling a strike. Swinging a foul out of play. Swing and a miss. Curve ball in the dirt in time and a drop third strike leads to the first out. Just a hammer 126 curve ball right there, boy. That was exactly what he wanted to do with it. Not a ton of pitchers can throw a true 126 break, but he does. And you can’t throw it any better than he did right there. Here’s the catcher to hit. Jos Herrera. That’s a ball. Tried the sweeper. Oh, that’s up there. All tied up here in the bottom of the six. Just off the inside edge. Well, I would expect in this three-0 count, you’re taking all the way. See if they’ll walk you and he walked him. Bell just came apart right there. Four pitch walk and guy at the plate was not going to help him out by swinging it something out of the zone. So, back to the top of the Arizona lineup. Standing in is the power hitting second baseman, Katel Marte. Singing. He’s a guy who covers both sides of the plate about as well as anyone in the sport. How difficult is that to do? Well, just look at the back of my bubble gum car. You’ll see how hard it is. These guys are great, man. My drive and this might be trouble. And that’s a double. Everything came together perfectly for him right there. Loud contact leads to the double. I mean, you could tell it had extra bases written all over it as it jumped off of the stick. A chance now to take the lead. And at this point in the game, that could be a deciding run. And now the right fielder, Corbin Carroll. Golden opportunity right here. These fans don’t like to see that because they showed up to watch him swing the bat, but this team does not want to let him beat him. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Peraldo Peromo who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts in the dirt one. No movement on the base. It’s ball one. That’s in for a strike. But I think ultimately you want to tie him up, get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield. Next offering is outside. Last couple of pitches breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. One out, base is full. Ground ball left side. Could be two. Looks to second. That’s one. And that’s two. This team is ready to make a play with the bases loaded. Excellent job of execution there. You turn the double play and the inning is over. We go to the top of the seventh. Here’s the center fielder, Jackson Merrill. foul. Next one misses and it’s a ball and a strike. Definitely a frustrating day for the offense, but when they look at it, this guy’s had his best stuff. Been painting the corners, working on the edges, and changing speeds. Just a difficult one. You tip your cap. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Jake Woodford getting loose out there. Nelson the lefty warming up as well. That one to first. Lock clear takes it himself. One up. One down. Now batting shortstop Xander Bogarts. Now here’s Xander Bogarts now. All right back. that catches the outside corner and it’s 0 and one. The guy’s going this good. He’s retired seven in a row. You got to step out of the box, fake bunt, do something to break it up. Swing and a miss. Nice change up. Stays alive. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. So, hey marks the advantage right there. I’m telling you what, pitcher and catcher on the same page right now. Now, batting left fieldielder Ramon Lauriano comes up to hit. One for two. And that misses. And that is ball one. Two down. Do on in the air out to center. Thomas running hard to get it. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And that is that. Nothing doing here this half. Seventh inning stretch time. All tied 1-1 set for the last half of the seventh and it’s Lordis Goreel Jr. designated hitter Lord Pava the tall righty 32 years old and he was drafted in the fourth round back in 2013. Oh he doesn’t get the call. Ball one. Fast ball for a strike. Swanging a ground ball in plenty of time to first and the lead off hitter set down to open the seventh. Up next for the Diamondbacks, first base, Tyler Lle stands in now for the Diamondbacks. And there’s one thing on his mind this at bat, getting that first hit at the big league level. Right through there for a strike. And a foul ball. Base is empty. One away here. The bottom of the seventh. Swing and a miss for the strikeout. He swung over top of the curveball. That’s a pretty nasty pitch right there. I’d call it a power curveball in the 80s. It’s got so much spin on it and you really don’t have a lot of time to sit back and watch what it’s going to do before you have to commit. It was a good one for the swinging strikeout. Alexander in the box again takes the strike and the sweeper misses. That one fouled off. Squeaks through that one. It’s a strikeout. So one, two, three go to Diamondbacks. Score remains tied 1-1. A new pitcher in the game, Jake Woodford. And he’s got a big time breaking ball to contend with. Hitters going to have to pick it up early if they’re going to have any chance. Jake Woodford. So now the DH spot. Jake Cronin. The designated hitter, Jake Croninworth. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. The Diamondbacks with some movement in the pen. Kevin Ginkle up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. Here comes the one on the ground to first locker and he handles it himself for the out. Digging in Jose Glacius. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. All tied up and we’re in the top of the eighth and it’s through for a hit. Always feels amazing getting a job done when the team needs you to come through. It’s just bigger than your own individual stats. He wasn’t able to elevate it, but he put a great swing on it right on time, good balanced approach, and just blasted it through the infield. And now let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases. Here’s Elias Diaz. And that’s downstairs. Ball one. just missed. Struggled a little bit in this one. Couple of strikeouts earlier, but doing a much better job in this at bat to get ahead and find a good hitter’s count at 2 and 0. That’s off the mark and it’s 3 and 0. Way to lay off that pitch down. Fernando Tatiz Jr. in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. down the middle for a strike. They’re now three and one. Highf fly ball right field. Carol moving under it. Out number two. Now batting right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. Fernando Tatiz Jr. to hit here. 0 for three in this one. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Well, a mistake right here could untie this ball game. If you’re the pitcher out there, you just want to be a little more cautious. the one. Hey, one ball, one strike in the air, center field. Thomas under it. He’s got it. And that’s the third out. One left for San Diego. Score remains deadlocked at one. Now pitching for back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Wandy Peralta coming on to face a righty here. And he’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers in those matchups are very good. Jorge Bar Roa now at the plate. The Diamondbacks left fielder. Jorge Barrosa, a change up missing. And that’s ball one. And another ball on plate umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. There’s the strike. In today’s game, not that many fast ball counts, but hitters still in the back of their minds. They’re looking for one. Two change up call right there. Excellent pitch selection to go with. And that one fouled off. Swing and a miss. That’s a strike out. Couldn’t hit the fast ball at the knees. Tough night at the dish. Punching out for the third time right there. He just hasn’t looked very comfortable at the plate. A little unsure of his timing right now. Not picking up the spin and location of these pitches. He’ll have some adjustments to make. Dax making a move for a pinch hitter, Adrien Del Castillo. And this is a big bat in this ball game. just missed. One down. Base is empty. And that is out of play. That misses the zone. Now two balls in Estrada. Action in the pen down there. Jeremiah Estrada, a right-hander with big strikeout stuff, is getting it fired up. swing and a ball lifted in the air shallow left field. That one gets down for a hit. So the go ahead run is on base with a knock. One of the hardest things to do in the game to stay mentally and physically ready for the big opportunity and he came through for his club right there. Jose Herrera stands in now for the Diamondbacks. He’s 0 for one. That one catches the zone and that is strike one. One’s the count. One away. Tie game. Go ahead run stands at first. This one high in the air to left center makes the grab. Two-way down. Now batting second baseman Catel Marte. An outstanding hitter in Catel Marte. One for three. If you don’t get ahead in the count, you can forget about having any success against him line and that’s a base hit and that moves the go ahead run to third position with two ball. Went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. That pretty much split the zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay. A lot riding on this next at bat now as they look to take the lead at a critical point in this one. Now Corbin Carroll to the dish for a big at bat. He’s already homerred here in this one. And that’s a little bit high. One and0. And that drops in for a strike. One and one. That’s off the mark now. Two balls in a strike. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. Deep breath. He’s ready and he fires. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. Three and one. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. That’s in there. Now three and two count. And with two outs and the count full, the runners will be on the move and he hits a ground ball right side and that chance handled. Got on now the offbalance throw and we stay tied as the inning ends. Diamondbacks strand a pair. It’s the ninth and we are tied. Now pitching. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Kevin Gle. Well, he’s been excellent against left-handed hitters this year. And that’s his first test. This looks like a good move to the pin in terms of the matchup. So, coming into the game now on defense, Jake McCarthy. He’ll be controlling center field. Number 31. Another batter now, Luis, known for his late inning heroics right through there for a strike. Felt impressed that he went right after him on that first pitch. That’s the key. Try to get ahead in the count. Then you can play around a little bit more as the at bat expands. And he’ll one and fouled off and one and two. Honest. It’s a strike out. Not the best location with the fast ball on strike three, but when you’re kind of high 90s, you get away with some of those more margin for error. You know, the fast ball has become such a huge strikeout pitch in the sport. And I think a lot of it has to do with all the attention and emphasis on improved spin rates. These fast balls are just exploding out of the pitcher hands and jumping through the zone. Here’s Manny Machado now out to short. Peromo on to first and that quickly. Two away. Now batting the center fielder Jackson. And now the center fielder Jackson Merrill. Fast for a strike. Two down. Nobody on here in the top of the ninth. Just missed. Started to swing. Held up. New one. That’s in there. And the count is even. Two and two. Well, so many hard throwing relievers in the game these days. You would think that hitters have made the adjustment, but I don’t know if you ever get used to it. Just pump it. And that one in the air, center field. McCarthy settles under it, drops into the glove, and that’ll do it. Nothing doing for the offense that time. Hard of the order. 345 will get their shot in the bottom of the ninth. All tied 1-1. Back now as they hand the ball to a fresh arm to start the bottom of the ninth, Jason Adams. He has a great slider with tons of movement. 40 Jason Adam Heraldo Peromo stands in now for the Diamondback. Going for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. There’s your strike. And I know you want to be patient as a hitter, but you got to be ready to jump on the first thing straight. And he got one right there. but left the bat on his shoulder. The one ball one there. Swing and a miss. And they count one and two. Really going after him here. All fast balls to get ahead in the count. And a swing and a miss. A huge out to start the bottom of the night. Oh, when you commit to throwing an inside fast ball to your glove side across the strike zone, especially with two strikes. If you’re going to miss, you want to miss off the plate in. You do not want to leave it out over the heart of the plate. So, that was excellent execution on that pitch. Really tied him up and he couldn’t get a piece at all. Here’s Guriel. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Base is empty, one away. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. Oh, that’s off the plate. He hasn’t wanted to challenge him. Both of those pitches off the plate away. Don’t expect anything down the heart of the plate. You may just have to be patient and take your walk here. One down, base is empty. Gel gets a piece. That one found hard the other way. Two two down. Keeps the advat going with a foul ball. Swing and a miss. And he struck him out. Coming out of the bullpen throwing be strike out the side. Now, you talk about the benefits, the advantages of relievers who can come in and get the swing and miss, whether it’s inherited runners or maybe a little jam that they get into themselves, knowing that they can miss the bat. Tell you what, that’s huge and can change the ball game. Tyler Lleier stands in now for the Diamondbacks. That one finds the zone and that’s strike one. And that gets the top of the zone for a strike. Trying to send this extra innings on the ground to third. whips it across. That’s the third out and we’re headed to extras. We’re at extras here. Stepping in for San Diego, Xander Bogart. For the Padres’s shortstop, Xander Bogarts Ginkle checks the runner. Merrick dives back in safely. You know, Boogie, if you’re that base runner at second base, you want to be quiet out there, not bouncing around, not distracting your teammate, the hitter. Make sure that he can clearly focus on that pitcher and that release point. Swing and a highf fly ball to left. Squeezes it. Runner tags second and he makes it up to third with one away. Now batting left fielder Raone Lauraniano. Raone Lauriano getting ready to hit. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Definitely a strikeout situation right here. Lots of ways for that go-ahead run to score if the ball’s put in play. top of the zone for a cold strike. Well, we call that keyhole. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. two with a go ahead run at third and here in extra innings. Next pitch is outside. That’s a really good take. Jake Cronin work in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. 3-2. Got him. Huge strike out there. Big strike out right there. And that kind of takes the pressure off the defense a bit and goes in. So now they can move back. Give themselves more time on a grounder to make a play. A lot more ways to work out of this and strand that runner at third now. So the go-ahehead run in scoring position. Next is the designated hitter Jake Croninworth. It immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. lifted in the air right field. Carol moving under it, makes the grab and that’s the third out. Well, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job of getting out of the jam. back here in the desert ready to go for the last half of the inning. Now the third baseman, Bla1 Alexander and there’s no doubt that they’ll feed off the energy from this crowd, right? I mean, yeah, I’d say the intensity level has gone up a few notches for sure. Adam back to work. Fouled off. He was late. swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. He’s falling behind in a huge spot. Boo. Got to do what it takes to come through. Maybe choke up on the bat a little bit. Spread out those feet. Whatever it takes. Ground ball right side. It squirts through. Throw comes in and the winning run stops 90 ft from home. Nobody out. So they hold the runner at third wanting to play it safe. Think that comes back to bite him. Boy, it’s hard to say. That runner on second to start extras is critical and you want to make sure you don’t waste him. If they don’t score this inning, there’ll be some second guessing for sure. So runners at the corners, nobody out. Next to hit for Arizona. Jorge Barrosa squares, pushes at it, misses it. It’s a strike. It’s 0 and one. And that one upstairs. Ball one. Next offering upstairs. It’s a big opportunity right here, but I love the way he’s slowing the game down. He’s shrinking his zone, making sure he gets the pitch that he wants to hit. And that drops in for a strike, cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. So, he needed a strike out there and he got it. And now we’ll see how they play it defensively. Yeah, now they can move the middle infielders back a little bit. Get into double play depth and look for a ground ball and roll it up. Get a big double play. Get out of this inning. I tell you what, that was a big strikeout in a spot where they really needed one. Now up next for Arizona, Jake McCarthy came into the game on defense. So his first trip to the plate here. Fought off foul. Two on, one out. Closed but called a ball. And now it’s even one and one. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Outside with a breaking ball. outside corner. Got him looking. He can’t believe it. I don’t know what he’s looking for right there. You have to be ready to swing the bat. You can walk it off if you’re just a little more aggressive. And here’s the catcher, Jose Herrera. That one is upstairs. Counts. One and0. Winning run at third. Two down. There’s the strike. gets him to chase after that one. He’s been able to go inside as well as outside effectively working both sides of the plate in this at bat. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Well, if he’s going to do something special right here, it’s going to have to happen with two strikes. fights that one away. Still one and two. Winning run at third. Two down and we’re in the last half of the 10. Next offering is down low. Swing and a miss. Had him out front for the strike out. A lot of adrenaline. We can see it right there. And sometimes you just got to let it out. That’s an outstanding job of taking that, executing, and getting out of a tough inning. Now pitching for the diamond. We’re in extras. And there’s a new arm on the mound. Kyle Nelson. This southpaw has been really good against left-handed at the plate. Jose Glaciius. That’s out to center field. McCarthy settles under it. He’s got it. Runner tags at second. Tag out. They cut down the go-ahead run at third. When you’re already in scoring position, if you decide to tag, you really want to be more than 100% confident that you can make it safely to third because otherwise you take a potential runcoring opportunity off the board. Great throw to third. Here’s the catcher, Elias Diaz. And that one fouled off. popped up to the left in the foul ground. Alexander makes the catch and that’ll do it. Now pitching for back here in extras and a new pitcher on the mound in the bottom half of the inning, Jeremiah Estrada. He’s having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season. So this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the plate. Catel Marte up to the plate. Man at second, nobody out. And Chris certainly one of the things in his head is trying to get the runner over. Yeah. The way that we see the game played today though, guys are not sacrificing as much just to get that runner across. They’re really looking at doing damage. Slugging is the name of the game. This guy’s got good power. With one swing, he can win it for him. Highf fly ball out towards left center. One away. Now batting the right fielder, Corbin Carroll. And the batter now, Corbin Carroll. He’s already homered in this game. Pitch misses there and it’s one and0. looking good. The winning run on second base. Way to lay off that fast ball up right there. You’re looking for something you see well that you can handle, but you also have to keep the discipline so that you’re not popping up pitches that are just a little too high. And a big swing and a miss. One away. And the gamewinning run stands at second. And that’s outside and that’s ball three. Heraldo Purdomo in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Four. He walked in and that’ll keep the line moving. I don’t think he really wanted to pitch to him right there anyhow. Short stop. Peraldo Pomo digs in now. Bounding ball here. Rolls foul. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. Two on, one out inside. And the count is one and one. This one lifted in the air left field and there’s two down. So up next, Ludas Goreel Jr. Oh, how he’d love to walk it off right here. And first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Winning run and score in position with two away. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. and a count one and two. Well, he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit, but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs, you’ve got to expand the zone. He’s capable of going out there and doing damage with it. And right back to the mound. Tosses to first, beats him to the bag. And that means we’re playing 12. onto the 12th and here is Fernando Tatiz Jr. leading off for the Padres’s right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. First pitch misses in the air to left center. McCarthy settles under it, hauls it in, and there’s one away. So the go-ahehead run in scoring position. Now the number two hitter Luis Arise, swings and misses that strike. Well, a come and get me fast ball right there. He didn’t look ready for the velocity. I think it’d be a mistake to throw him anything off speed right here in the dirt. Blocked and the runner holds and a 1-1. And that’s pushed foul off to the left and out of play. Swings and this one’s flared. And that’s a base hit. Runner around third. Throw is offline and he scores. And a two one ball game now. Well, there you go. The RBI machine. Another clutch run scoring at bat. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. One down, runner at first. And now it’s Manny Machado. Here’s the pitch. Runner goes. Tap foul at the plate. That one finds the zone and it’s into activity in the Arizona bullpen. John Curtis, the hardthrowing righty is up and loosening. Beaks, a left-hander, also throwing a rise at first. One gone. Hard grounder into the outfield for a nine. Quick throw back in. Lead runner holds it second with one gone. Now batting center fielder Jackson Merrill. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Jackson Merrill. Swinging a foul straight back. get on the ground to the right side and that one handled. Fires to first in time. Good late bite on that slider. Got the hitter out in front. Rolled over on it. Exactly what he was supposed to do. Bogards. Here’s Xander Bogards. And this is a big opportunity for him to pick up his teammate right here in there at the knees for a strike. Two on, two outs. Swung on, popped up left side. Alexander moving under it. And that is that. But they pick up one run on the RBI single and this is now a 2-1 ball game. We’re back and on the mound is the closer Robert Suarez. Save opportunity for him right here. And he’s their guy. Tyler Lle now at the plate. Well, comfortable or not, these are the situations closers they seem to live for. I mean, you get into some hot water, a jam, tough spot, whatever you want to call it. But this is where they earn their keep. In today’s game, outs are valuable. So, guys aren’t just willing to give themselves up to advance a runner. They’re trying to drive him in as well in the process. So, I don’t expect him to shorten up and just try to hit behind the runner here. Line drive base hit comes back in the tying run stops at third with nobody out. So they hold the runner at third wanting to play it safe. Think that comes back to bite him. Well, it’s hard to say that runner on second to start extras is critical and you want to make sure you don’t waste him. They don’t score this. There’ll be some second guessing for sure. So runners at the corners, nobody out. Here’s the third base, Bla1 Alexander. That’s in there. that one at triple digits. Nobody out. Both the tying and winning runs on base. Got him looking. And that is a big first out. Oh, big strike out right there. and maybe a little controversial with the call. I think he got a little bit of favor on the mound. No question about it. It’s not exactly what you want to see in a big spot like that. And I’m sure there’s some chirping going on from the dugout making it clear that wasn’t his best call behind the plate today. Next up for the Diamondbacks, Jorge Barrosa swinging a foul out of play. swing and a miss and a count is 0 and2. Big pitch right here. He’s going to try to make a pitch that’s going to produce a strikeout or a ground ball double play. The 02 and ball one. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. just misses there. He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here. I love it. Squirts away a little bit to second, but way too late. Safe there. Huge wild pitch there. Winning run is in scoring position. Two on, one out. Look out. And it hit him. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. Next hit for Arizona. Jeff McCarthy went down on strikes his first time through. McCarthy Inside corner for a strike and one. This guy absolutely flies. The defense wants to turn two, but they’ve got to get a ball they can do it with. Make sure you get the first out before you try to rush and get two and end up with nothing. And that one fouled off. That missed by a lot. And one and two. out there to center. Base hit. One run is in. Here comes the throw. The winning run crosses the plate and the Diamondbacks win it in 12. In this situation, this guy’s looking to put the ball in play and find a hole somewhere. Well, he did exactly that. Drives into a very cool walk-off win. A 32 final score in this one. A oneun extra inning win for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon. Heat. Heat.
