Coach Mike Tomlin on situational ball (Aug. 6) | Pittsburgh Steelers
Man, another good day of work. Um, really pushing situations in preparation for Saturday evening. Um, did a bunch of third down ball here today. Did some more twominute. Um, like the like the energy of the group. Um, we rested some more established players um in an effort to get some more exposure uh for some younger guys. a lot of those younger guys are going to be playing a lot of football um on Saturday night and so we just deem it appropriate to give them work and preparation and we’ll do more of that as we push forward closer to Saturday night. But I like some of the things I saw out here today. Um one man’s misfortune is another man’s opportunity. Uh particularly in circumstances like this, people need days off. People deal with minor injuries and so forth. Um we like to focus on the opportunity that it is for others. Um Skyler for example uh got some additional reps today due to the uh hand injury with Will. Regarding Will’s hand injury, um he’s got a broken finger. It can be characterized as week to week. Um you know, he’s looking at his options. Man, I have more information uh when it’s definitive, but he’s certainly out uh this week. Um appears to be non-surgical and so we’ll see where the roads lead us there. We got some other guys working their way back to us uh from a health standpoint. Uh Gareth Warren was a partial participant. Joey Porter was a partial participant among some others. Um just the natural bumps and bruises associated with this time of year. We’ll manage it um and push through these very important days. I’ll pause and open up for questions. Is Derek Harman part of the guys bumps and bruises right now? Yes. Do you have an update on Calvin Austin that he’s down here? I don’t. Um you know, he’ll he’ll be perking back up here soon, I’d imagine. Mike, how have you seen Skyler take advantage of recent opportunities here? You know, he did a good job today. Um, I don’t know that, you know, I’ve really paid attention to the additional opportunity component of it until today and I thought he did a nice job. What is uh Derek uh dealing with right now? You know, um just minor things associated with the rigors of training camp. Anyone else? As far as um two guys that you were looking at last year, Wilson and Faano, now that they’re back healthy with you guys and participating, how have you seen them in their second season? You know, I think they’re both having really good camps. Uh we need them, too. Um they don’t need to behave like rookies, although they didn’t have a lot of exposure in terms of playing time a year ago, they have been a part of the program and I think that that should should show itself and and so far it has. They’re both making plays and doing a nice job of it. Mike, what about ya? What have you seen him do so far? He’s a high energy big. Um, for an enormous man, man, he uh he hustles, he finishes, and and I think that’s a good place to begin from a skill development standpoint. Obviously, he’s a work in progress, but there’s a lot to like. Anyone else? Mike, when we talked with Aaron Rogers this morning, he talked about I’m sorry, Mr. Sorry. When we talked with Aaron Rogers this morning, he talked about, you know, the last three or four practices, he feels the offense is really kind of starting to take some progress. Um, that’s what it looks like. I know he’s throwing the heck out of it, man. And it and it appears that he’s getting really comfortable within the schematics and so I’d say that’s a solid assessment. Where where is Rogers in in comparison to maybe what you expected you to be at this point? I don’t know that I had any expectations. is I try not to make any assumptions uh in team development whether it’s individual or collective.

Feel bad for Will Howard :/ I was really looking forward to seeing him play in the preseason.
Wow… No expectations of Aaron…if that's the case we are certainly doomed! I think both Aaron and Coach T. are way too comfortable.
I wonder if Coach T. would be in agreement with Aaron Rodgers downplaying the importance of the preseason? It's understood that the schematics of the preseason for most teams is vanilla, but there is a lot to get from the preseason like:
REALLY getting hit – not tagged
Uncontrolled situational downs
Uncontrolled unit changes
Seeing different formations and personnel
It's games that determine players livelihood
Fan noise
Real penalties
Game breaks
and frankly some guys perform MUCH better and go HARDER when facing players who are NOT their teammate, so the evaluation process for new players/rookies is essential.
We know Aaron doesn't want to get hit or show his struggles before the Jets game, but I say what are you afraid of fella? It's football. Either you still love competing or you don't! I just hope and pray that Coach T. will not wait until the last three games of the season to call on Mason to save our @$$! As a fan evaluating how I would defend our team and I would take away DK over the top, stack the box, and bring heat to Broderick's side ALL DAY because all I have seen is Aaron-to-DK, Aaron-to-DK. It takes a complete team to win championships.
