MLB LIVE🔴 San Diego Padres vs Arizona Diamondbacks – Aug 5, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

just about set to go now. The starting pitcher in this one, Ryan Nelson. Well, he’s allowing just over one base runner per inning, which is really good, especially for a starter because these hitters get to see you two, three, maybe even four times in a start. So, just shows you how deceptive and how effective his stuff is. We’ll see if it’s that way in this one. So digging in now for San Diego, Fernando Tatiz Jr. and that is cut on and miss. It’s 0. Fouled off down the right side. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Hit pretty well in the air out to center. Carol sizing this one up. And it’s caught for the as we take a look at the Padres’s lineup. And it’s clear the most important job they have today is getting to the starting pitcher early and often. No doubt about that. That’s the best way to disrupt a game. But can they do it? Certainly something for us to pay attention to in this one. Partner Luis Arise stands in Chris. Baseball today. so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers, but this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. That clips the corner. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. Singi, one of the things that’s interesting is that guys really don’t worry about swing and miss from an offensive standpoint anymore. So when you see somebody who contacts the ball like this, do you think of that as plus value? Absolutely. If he’s doing damage now, if he’s rolling over and and grounding out, then it’s a different story. But yeah, if he can put the ball in the gaps or over the fence, 100%. Yeah. And the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end. He came out of his mechanics there. Typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time little anxious. Two down, base is empty. Now Manny Machado, what a season it’s been for him. He has supplied a lot of power and that average right through there for a strike. Remember Mark Katse was a real good defensive outfielder. Good instincts, not great speed. Yeah, and I figured you would get Kat into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. Two out space is empty. and that one a little below the knees and it’s one and two. Next offering is outside two and two. spoils that one and it remains two and two. There’s the ball. Wow, this guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity. Hey, you got this. Ground ball right side. Marte throws to first in time. Machado out on the play. Third out and that ends the frame. Padres’s down in order. And now the Diamondbacks will get their first turn at bat. No score. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Back here at Chase Field and on the hill in this one, U Darvish and Singi. We were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. Well, he’s been a real quality starter for his club and coming into this one, what stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year. It seems they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone. So, we’ll see how right-handers do against him in this one. Corbin Carroll leading things off and takes a strike and a swing to miss. No ball. Two straight. Pitch in the dirt and a count one and two. Now a slow roller to second. Croninworth on the run. Sends it over to first in time. Got him. Now the Diamondbacks line up as put together by Tory Lavell. A guy who’s been huge for them over the last month plus. Au Heno Suarez and Boo. He’s a big time run producer for these guys, man. Leading the team in homers, runs batted in, doing damage on the regular, man. Making opposing pitchers just sweat out there. And it’s kind of fun to watch. Get ready for a show when he steps into the box. What a stop onto the pitcher and very nicely done for the out. Batting third shorts stop Peralo Po. Two out. Space is empty. Stepping in is the switch hitting shortstop. Peraldo Peromo. Perdomo 25 years old and he was born in the Dominican Republic. Two down to that one is lifted in the air. Tatis right there to make the grab. And that’ll do it. We played an inning. No score. Back here in the desert at the plate, Jackson Merrill. Jackson Merrill. Nelson back to work in the air right side. Carol moving under it. Puts it away for the Owl. And there’s one down. that he fit the designated Xander Bulgar singing he’s never finished the season with more stolen bases in his entire career. First pitch and he just misses. Bogart’s who wears that number two on his back for his idol Derek Jeter swings and misses at the pitch off the plate. Well, there’s a certain point where you have to commit to what you think you see. And he guessed wrong right there. Nasty slider with just terrific bite at the end. One out. Base is empty. That one finds the zone and that’s strike two. That front door slider is such a devastating pitch. You don’t want to get beat by the inside fast ball. So you cheat a little bit and then by the time it gets there, it’s out of the swing plate. That one well upstairs. Three and two now. So K marks the back for X. I got to think that was the plan all the way. He set him up with a high fast ball and then bury that curve ball down low to get him swinging. Now especially with how effective pitchers work up in the zone these days. That’s a devastating combination. Jake Croninworth in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Next pitch misses way outside. Second inning here. No score. Fast ball for a strike at 95. Looks like a really good fast ball today. You can hear that catcher mitt popping. Looking forward to hearing a lot of that one in this one. Two outs. Breaking ball in there. Got him looking. And it’s a three up, three down inning. Nothing doing there for the Friars. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. Bottom of the second. Here’s the cleanup hitter for the Diamondbacks. Auheno Suarez. Hitter Auo Suarez. And that drops in for a strike. Well, the key to his success is getting ahead early in the count. He cannot afford to go deep in the counts. Doesn’t have a ton of swing and miss stuff, so he’s going to have to work efficiently. Next offering is down low. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching off. Next pitch is downstairs. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Next offering is downstairs. Swing and a miss. Curve ball in the dirt. Beats him for the first out and that completes the strikeout. Chris, as we look back at the pitch sequence, he hadn’t seen that curve ball at all. How tough is it to adjust to something like that with a bunch of break when you haven’t had a look at it yet? Yeah, I mean, you’re dialed up for something firm. You never want to take a called third strike as a fast ball. So, you’re going to be a little anxious before you recognize the pitch. And right there, clearly didn’t see what was coming. Here’s Guriel. Guriel gets a piece. Diamond swinging at a ball popped up. E Glacius pulls it down and there’s two gone. Batting six, catcher Adrien Del. Adrien Del Castillo stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Yeah, big swing and a miss. Threw that fast ball right by him. Slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder. And a foul ball. Left hand hitter waits hit on the ground to the right side. Croninworth throws to first out number three. So one, two, three go to Diamondbacks. We’ll move to the third with no score. onto the third inning. Now it’s the short stop and a pitch with a short stop. Takes a ball. Next offering is fouled back. And a one-1. Swings through that one for strike two. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. Foul ball still a one and two counts another and that’s three straight strikeouts. That was a really nice pitch call for that putaway slider right there. Look at the sequence in that at bat and he hadn’t thrown it yet. So just makes it really tough to recognize and fight off with two strikes. I’m sure it looked like a fast ball all the way until it wasn’t. Here’s Gavin Sheets now. Left hand bat and that one fouled off. Top of the third, no score. just missed and a ground ball to first, but a kicks foul. the one two make it four strike outs in a row just cruising along. That’s tough. You see it well. I mean that was clearly up and out of the strike zone but that’s one of the hardest things. But when you see a pitch out of the hand at eye level, that discipline to remember I can’t hit that pitch. If I can see it really well at eye level, I can’t catch up to that pitch when a pitcher’s got this kind of velocity. Martine Maldonado up to hit. late on that fast ball. Oh, and one and a curve is down and in. One and one. line drive base hit. So the two out knock extends the inning and sends them back to the top of the order. Right fielder Fernando Tatis Junior. So the batting order turns over. Fernando Tatis Jr. to hit here. Fly to right his first time. Maldonado off of first with two away. Sit him down. Next offering misses down and away. That’s down and in. A slider missed. In the dirt. Two outs. And he hits a ground ball right side and foul ball. Payoff pitch. So now two on and two outs. Well, a breaking ball in that 3-2 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. First and second, two outs. Next for the Padres’s, Luis Az for one. He struck out swinging last time. There’s the strike. If he doesn’t get a knock right here, that pitch he just took is going to eat at him for a while. You might not see another pitch like that from a top level guy like this. And that one goes straight to the back stop. And two in scoring position now thanks to that wild pitch. No trouble moving up to second on that play with the ball getting that far away from the catcher. Nice job to take advantage of the wild pitch. Two outs, two in scoring position. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. And fouled off. Two balls, two strikes to count with two outs. Two balls, two strikes. and just misses with that one. That pitch was pretty borderline at the top of the zone and he’s not digging the call out there on the mound. Clearly pretty frustrated. So, he’s going to have to collect himself a little and that’ll load the bases. So close to getting out of it right there, but this inning still has life. Third base, Manny. So bases all loaded up. Here’s the third baseman, Manny Machado. 0 for one. He grounded out in his first at bat. This at bat might not seem like a huge deal right now, but baseball is a game of moments. And what happens here could change everything. And Manny gets a piece. Base is loaded. Two down. That one hit to right. Carol moving under it. Drops into the glove and that’s the third out. Pods leave him loaded. Still no score. And we’re back. set for the bottom of the third. And here’s the first base, Tristan. English. Foul ball there. Just missed. Right through there for a strike. Breaking ball misses down and away. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside right side. Hard hit. Arise takes it to the bag. One gone. Bottom of the third inning. Third baseman. Blaze Alexander. Bla1 Alexander stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Well, here’s an interesting stat on Darvish. He has more than a 100 wins in his big league career. The only Japanese-born pitcher with more wins is Hideon Nommo, my former teammate. Darvish delivers. There’s a strike. That’s excellent location on the fast ball right there early in this game. If he can do that all game, should be a good outing for him. That one missed. And a swing and a miss. Two gone now. Really love the pitch sequence right there. I’m telling you what, pitcher and catcher on the same page right now. Jorge Barrosa getting ready to hit. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. That’s to third and that one handled over to first and Arizona is set down. One, two, three. Nothing doing for Arizona and we are still scoreless. Start of the fourth. Here’s the center fielder, Jackson. Merrill. Inside. Just missed. You know, these Padres’s as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see. But I think they have to hit hard but foul off to the left. The one-two the swing and a soft liner takes it in for the out. Now batting designated hitter Xander Bogarts. Here comes X to the plate. Struck out swinging his first time. Bogarts in his 12th season, 32 years old and he was born in Aruba. And that’s through there for a strike. And it’s 0 and one line and a base hit into right. And the Padres’s have a man aboard with one out. Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. Now here’s Jake Croninworth caught looking his first time up. Pitch misses inside and that is ball one. Bogarts leads off first with one away. No, that’s a ball. Well, he looks more focused at the plate and working the count after that first at bat strikeout. And a foul ball makes the count two and one. Pickoff move to first. Boggard stes back. That one in for a strike. Two and two. That’s down and in. Fourth inning underway. No score. and ball four to a board. Now batting go ahead run on base stepping in for San Diego Jose Glacius. He’s 0 for one. The shorts stop takes the ball at the dish looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot. Anything but the inning ending double play boo. That one drifts inside. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. Hit in the air out to center field. Bara pulls it in for the out. Up next for the Padres’s left field a chance for Gavin Sheets. Struck out swinging his first time. That’s in for a strike. outside with a breaking ball. Swing and a popup. Nelson gets there. He’s under it. And that’s the third out. Padres’s leave a and we’re still knotted at zero. and welcome back to the ballpark. This is Corbin Carroll right fielder Corbin Carol swinging a foul out of play. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Pitch misses. And the count is even. Two and two. Three. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another popped up to the left into foul ground. Maldonado sizes this one up, has room, and he makes the catch. Bill, that was a pitch you got to crush. Unbelievable that he missed it right there. And I’m telling you, he is going to be frustrated with himself until this next at bat. An outstanding hitter in Catel Marte. Scoreless here, but now he’s got to deal with a guy who’s got some power. Got to be careful when you’re talking about a hitter with this type of slug and these type of home run totals. Boo. Over 80% of his first pitches are strikes. You’re doing that, you could have a really good day out there in the mound. Next pitch is outside. Swan on belted. Tatis going back out of here. He nails one out to right. The Diamondbacks score first. It’s one- nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself. At bat after at bat, he’s that confident. That one was a hanger and pitchers typically don’t get away with making a mistake like that. And right there he made him pay. And now the short stopo. Fought off foul. That’s a ball. Up and in. Ball two. Two and one. in the count now. He hasn’t seen a fast ball yet, but you’ve got to be ready to hit one because you doubt the pitcher wants this to go to a 3-1 count. The 2-1 to third. Machado zips it to first and there’s two away. It’s a good recovery though after giving up the home run, not allowing it to stay in the head, but going to work at the next hitter at that Suarez up to the plate now. Swings here and blasts one left field. It has the distance gone. He sends a rocket to left. It’s their second home run of the inning. And they add a run. It’s two nothing. For a pitcher, the odds are in your favor if you keep that breaking ball down. That time he got punished for it. hitter just did a really good job of staying within himself and getting the barrel to the baseball. Here’s Lordis Guriel Jr. He’s 0 for one. A bit behind with that swing. It’s strike one. in the air left field down the line, lays out and makes the play. Great diving catch to end the inning. That’ll fire up the dugout for sure. Time to go swing it. Ready now for the fifth inning. And now Martin Maldonado. Well, after scoring runs, this is where you’re looking for that shutdown inning. Get that hot team back in there to swing the bats. That one fouled off. You know, these Padres’s doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of him. Starter’s leash has to be getting tighter with his pitch count where it is, but so far he’s been really effective in this one. Two and one and a foul ball. You know, sometimes it just takes getting to the bullpen in order to be able to score runs. And that might be the case today. Got him swinging. Wow. Just great bite to that slider. Broke hard out of the zone and he just couldn’t hold up the swing. You know, as a hitter, that pitch is really hard to take and there’s just not much you can do with it. You know that, but you don’t want to get rung up by the umpire. So with one down, it’ll bring up Fernando Tatis Jr. fouled off. He was late. Fernando Tatis Jr. signed by the White Socks 2015 for $700,000 and then eventually moved in the James Shields trade in June of 2016. Just missed check swing and he went one and two. The Diamondbacks up by two and we’re in the top of the fifth. Striking three and that’s two in a row. That was a tough slider right there. he couldn’t get a piece of it just to try to keep the at bat alive. And hitters will tell you that slider when a guy is able to really tunnel the pitch where it looks like a fast ball and then late has a really good bite. So tough to lay off of because you’ve made the decision you don’t want to get beat by a fast ball and then you swing and you miss. You go back to the dugout shaking your head. The stands in now and watches strike one. Close one. Doesn’t get the call and the count is one and one. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. That misses the zone now. Two balls in a strike in there for a strike at the bottom of the zone. All this offense has just been locked down. Almost five full innings of shut out baseball. Got him. Larry Fuller brings him up. Impeccable command in that one. Three batters, three strikeouts. That’s electric stuff out there on the mound. back here at Chase Field. John Shabi with my buddy Chris Singleton. It’s set to get us started. Bottom five, Adrien Del Castillo. Darvish back to work. Swing and a miss. I think he was sitting off speed there. And that skips in the dirt. Darvish kicks, delivers that to right, hauls it in, and there’s one away. Those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. base is empty, one away. Last half of inning number five. Battling here as he fouls it away. Foul ball still 0 and two on the ground right side. Boots it gets off a throw. Safe. It was never going to be easy after the misplay. Well, looked like a pretty routine play. Just couldn’t get it to stick in the glove as he gets tagged with the error. two outs in the inning, but now they have to work around it and get two more. So, digging in, Bla1 Alexander. Squirts away a little bit. English the base runner at first with one out down the left field line should be extra bases rounds third headed for the plate the relay safe it’s three zip picks himself off an RBI it’s always Fun to see a double rip down the line. That one just barely stayed fair. So that was a good call by the umpire. He was all over it. Now it’s the switch hitting outfielder Jorge Barrosa that catches the corner. One out and a runner at second. And there’s a foul ball. inside. Almost got him. Straighten him up a little bit. Next pitch inside and the count’s even at two. outside. That’s a good attack right there. He was down early in that plate appearance. Works the walk. Well, they didn’t give him anything to hit and now with runners on first and second, they’ve set up a double play opportunity. So, not a terrible result. And the Padres’s manager making his way towards the mound as he will make the move. That does it for you Darvish. And he’s not going to be happy with himself. New pitcher on the mound in a moment. Now pitching for out of the bullpen for the Padres’s. He’s got a wicked breaking ball in his arsenal and it’s definitely one of his go-to pitches when he needs an out. So, back to the top of the Arizona lineup. Now, it’s the right fielder Corbin Carroll. 0 for two in this one. Singing, you got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively. I mean, watching him track balls in the outfield, it is beautiful. So, how much does his speed factor into his ability to go get it? It’s heartbreaking for the hitter because off the bat he thinks this ball’s going to get down because of that speed and the ability to make up so much ground. He enters the picture and breaks a guy’s heart. That’s in there and the count one and one. There’s one guy that I can think about, Boo, who started as a third baseman, Alex Gordon, and then became an elite paridial gold glover out in left field for the Kansas City Royals. But he’s a guy when you watch him play, you would imagine that that’s all he ever played in his life was the outfield. Yeah. Some guys just have instincts, right? I mean, that’s the way it goes. You talk about Larry Walker, the Hall of Famer, and his instinct on the bases despite the fact that he didn’t play a ton of baseball as a kid. Fouls one off. Two and two. And as well, lots of pop in that bat. So, you combine the slug with really good defense. That one just misses. And they’re all loaded up. Oh, looking for a swinging miss right there or for the ump to help him out and make a call with that last pitch, but neither happened. Close pitch, but a good take to earn that wall. Catel Marte up to the plate. He’s already homerred here in this one. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Bullpen action for the Padres’s. Ron Marinacio up and loosening in the pen. Matsui also throwing. One out. Base is full. Next offering in there for a strike. Strike one. Good pitch to hit on a tee up in the zone. I think he was looking for something else right there. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. One run across now. A long throw home and he’s out. He’s out. Well, I get pretty fired up on plays like that, especially as a former outfielder. Textbook. Excellent footwork. came up with a nice crow hop, throw on the money to the plate. Man, it doesn’t get any better than that. And a nice job as well by the catcher. Handled that throw, put the tag on, and the ball stays in the mid. Heraldo Peromo stands in now for the Diamondbacks. And that’s a strike. a little out front there as he swings through it. More and more guys are looking to slug regardless of the count and this situation will keep a close eye on his approach in the dirt. Not in time. be safe. Going to have to buckle down and make a pitch or two to get out of this little jam he’s worked himself into after the two out hit. Then that wild pitch. Good time to step off, take a deep breath. Look out. And it hit him. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. They’re all loaded up. Hang Suarez up to hit now. He’s already homeed in this game. Swings through the fast ball up in the zone. He threw that fast right by him. Gives him a little bit of confidence. But in the back of your mind, you got to think, is he trying to set me up for later in this at bat? Drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck. And it’s a one hopper off the wall. Should be extra bases. The run scores from first, extending their lead. He was all over that one. Fast pretty much middle middle and that’s what you fall asleep dreaming about as a hitter. So no surprise he put a great swing on it. and the Padres’s manager making his way towards the mound as he will make the move. Nick Paveta departs and he’s responsible for the runner on second, so the book isn’t closed on him yet. We’ll be right back. Now pitch number 76 on the pitch here. And as relievers go, he’s not a big strikeout guy. He tries to force weak contact. So command and execution are huge for him. Man at second here with two away. And it’s Lordis Goreiel Jr. And remember he was absolutely robbed of a base hit last time up. And that one is downstairs. And that’s ball one. Man on second. Two down. And that one fouled off. Griel gets a piece. Suarez stands at second with two gone. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And it’s two and two. And that one missing low. gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. So now two on and two outs. Now that is the catcher Adrian. So two on the two away. And now the catcher comes up to him. Adrien Del Castillo. That’s through there for a strike. Rush to right. This one’s got a chance. out of here. Home run. He shoots one out to right. His first homer of the year. And they tack on three. It’s 10 nothing. That’s their third home run of the game. They’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one. They’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot. Well, he put a really nice swing on that one and everything was on time. Took a direct path to the ball. Excellent extension and just drove it out of here. Nothing better than when the ball jumps off your bat like that. So, up next, Tristan English headed towards the corner. Tatis really on his horse for it. Got it. Nice grab and that’s the inning. But it’s a huge eight run inning for him as they open up the lead. We’re through five. It’s the Diamondbacks 10 and the Padres’s nothing. We’re back and they make a change to start the sixth. The new pitcher number 55. Compared to some days, this is a pretty low leverage appearance for him. So, he should be fairly free and easy out there. still have to keep yourself sharp and attack the strike zone. And now it’s Manny Machado. Third base, Manny Machado. Well, every pitcher wants run support and having a lead is nice, but it can be challenging for some pitchers. I think keeping the mindset to attack instead of trying to be too fine and have too much finesse. Go after hitters and get quick outs. The Diamondbacks with some movement in the pen. Anthony Dclani up and throwing for manager Tory Lavell. Graveman getting loose as well. And Manny gets a piece. That one is absolutely belted. And that gets down in the corner around first heading for two. And he greets the new arm from the bullpen with a double. Drove that ball nicely. Put a great swing on it and it jumped off his back. Kind of put it all together there. And he’s rewarded with the double. So, a man aboard and next will be the cleanup hitter, Jackson Merrill. And he swings and misses and it’s nothing and one. And ball one. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out. And we’re the top half of the sixth. Oh, he hit him. And that got him pretty flush. Now batting and a dangerous hitter coming up to hit Inander Bogarts. One for two. Ball one to Bogarts. Come on. Just missed. First and second here. No outs. And another ball. That one finds the zone and it’s three and one and that’ll load the bases. Speaking of walks, did you see anything special during your walk into the ballpark today? I know you like to take in all the surroundings. I just love interacting with the people. It’s just fun to connect. I mean, as I was headed up to the booth, one guy shouted at me, “Make sure to say hi to Kenny.” Croninworth in the box for the third time today as he takes that one off the plate. Croninworth a seventh round pick by the Rays in 2015 out of the University of Michigan where he was a two-way guy and in fact the Rays used him that way to the right side and that’s just foul. Base is loaded, nobody out. This one is blasted. A no doubter grand slam. He circles the bases. It’s 104. Well, a great job here of staying within himself. You know that if you get a knock, you’re going to drive in a couple. So, stay focused on that. Well, he does more than just a knock. hits the grand slam to drive in four. Really good job at the plate. Manager out of the dugout now and it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Number 55 is done and as he heads for the dugout, we’ll take a quick break. New arm on the mound when we get back. Now pitching Anthony Dclani gets handed the rock out of the pen. This guy’s a strikethrower. He’s done an excellent job of a morning walk so far this season. Jose Glacius gets a chance to hit now. Hit in the air right field. Carol moves towards it and there’s one down. Now batting left fielder Gavin Sheets. So digging in Gavin Sheets. And that’s downed away. Still only one out here in the inning. And there’s a ball. I can’t play around with him here. It’s a six-run lead at this point. Got to attack hitters even if you give up a solo shot. And that one hammered, hops over the wall, and that’s an automatic double. The automatic double kind of feels like enjoying cruise control in your car. Boo. You don’t need to keep the pedal down as you cruise into second base. Just no worries in the world. You know what? He put a really good swing on that one. Martine Maldonado the next up for the Padres’s. There’s the strike. 95 of that one. And it’s fouled away. Bounced to the right side. Marte sends it to first. Play is made. Two out. Now batting right fielder Fernando Tatis. So the San Diego batting order turns over. Now it’s Fernando Tatis Jr. That’s off the inside corner. Ball one. No, that’s low. That one down the line and it goes just foul. Two outs. Ripped on the ground to second. Tosses to first and they take care of Tatis for the out. That’ll end the inning after a lot of scoring. San Diego goes big with the grand slam. And this is now a 104 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back here in the desert, we go bottom six. Down the third baseman, Bla1 Alexander. Blaze Alexander in there at the knees for a strike. Well, these Diamondbacks, simply put, are producing a lot of quality swings. They have five extra base hits on the stat sheet so far. And that tells me they’re seeing the ball out of the pitcher hand really well. Popped up. Croninworth settles underneath it. Makes the grab. One away. Good hard fast ball up in the zone right there. They look really good coming in, but so hard to get on top of as aielder. So up next, Jorge Barrosa. With all those extra base hits, it’s easy to think we’re going to see that trend continue the rest of the game. They seem to be really locked in at the plate. That catches the outside corner. That’s strike one. Sliced hard but foul. The D-Max up big in this one here in the bottom of the sixth. Chopper to second. Tosses to first and a couple of quick outs. Up next for the Diamondbacks, right fielder Corbin. So the lineup flips over and now the right fielder Corbin Carroll. And that’s off the inside edge. And it’s one and0. Two down. Nobody on. So now one and two and a foul ball. He stays alive. And that’s outside. Hit hard on the ground to short. Easiius fires over to first and it’s a one two3 inning. Diamondbacks down quickly. They’re up comfortably though. It’s 104. Well, this game isn’t very close. Sy, let’s see if we got any messages from those tuning in today. I know we got some good stuff in there. All right, Si in Ballpark Entertainment. You got a favorite mascot race? Yeah, I love what they do in DC with the former presidents. Somebody always gets tackled. They always get heard. I know. And it’s just crazy. Imagine running around in those big bulky suits and somebody’s always going to go down. Do you remember when Tim Kirkin ran in the sausage race in Milwaukee? No, I didn’t see that one. Yeah. Yeah. They use one of the kidsiz ones. You know, this isn’t exactly a mascot race, but I love what they do in Atlanta with the freeze. Next offering is down low. I wanted to race the freeze at one point. I don’t think my hamstrings could hold up for it now. I feel like 5 years ago you could have handled the freeze. It would have been fun and I would bait you into it and try and get you to train to race the freeze and it just never materialized. Yeah, I would I appreciate that that you had enough confidence in me that I could beat a guy who looks like he was going to the Olympic trials at some point or another. But yeah, it’s always a great thing to watch there at Truist Park. Would you have worn one of those bobsled outfits like the freeze wears? No, they would have been too a little too revealing for me at this age. I feel you. Machado in the box now. No balls in a strike. Arise on at first. Nobody out. A rope into right and that’s a base hit. Throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Just so sound in his mechanics. hits against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field. And now the center fielder Jackson Merrill and that’s in there for strike one. Let’s go down. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches. Now in an 02 hole. He’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake. Swings through that one. It’s a strike out. Oh, Willie went aggressive in with that slider. Good two strike pitch right there. At worst case scenario, it’s weak contact in play. Exactly where he and the catcher wanted it. And here comes Xander Bogarts. First pitch just misses in the dirt but kept close. Two on, one out. Misses inside. And that’s ball three. And there’s the automatic. I know a slider is a great pitch, but when you’ve got really good velocity, sometimes you just got to challenge the hitter with that force seamer. Next offering is in for a strike. Three balls. Two strike check swing at a 3-2 appeal down to first and he held up. Second walk of the game for him and he’s been really patient at the play the game plan that he’s sticking to. He’s just not going outside of what he’s looking for up there. So digging in now for San Diego, Jake Croninworth. And the slider catches the zone. Tough situation right here. So important as a pitcher to get ahead in the count as he did right there. 01 now. All one there. The 1-1 is fouled off. fouls it off. Still one and two. All loaded up here in the top half of inning number seven. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Let’s go. On the ground is short. Could be two. They get one and it’s a double play to end the inning. Just trying to sneak one through with the bases loaded, but an excellent job by the defense to turn that one and get out of this jam. And we’re back ready to go for the last half of the unit. And now Catel Marte. Catel Marte. And that’s a little bit high. One and0. One ball. No strike. And another ball. Ripped on a line. Merrill calls it in. And there’s one away. He was all over that fast ball right there. I tell you what, if he gets under it just by a fraction of an inch or a little bit more, that’s way better. Heraldo Purdomo, the next to hit. Now that’s smacked to right center. He’s got it. There’s two away. Up next for the Diamondbacks, designated hitter. Next hit for Arizona Suarez. With this kind of lead, he can swing freely, try to hit the ball out of the park, do what he loves to do. That one hammered, but pulled fouled. Two outs. And that one upstairs. Ball one. way to lay off that fast ball up right there. You’re looking for something you see well that you can handle, but you also have to keep the discipline so that you’re not popping up pitches that are just a little too high. Tosses to first, three up, three down, inning over. What a play to end the inning. There’s no way he saw that into the glove. No, you’re absolutely right. All he knew was the grounder was somewhere behind him. Just threw his glove out there and it stuck. That was pretty cool. And welcome back to the ballpark. Ready to begin the eighth and the batter will be the shortstop. Jose Glacius Dclani back to work. That’s to third. Alexander throws to first in time. Just got him on that one. Well, we talk about how the ball is coming out of a pitcher’s hand. the way it comes out of his hand as an infielder. Wow. Really impressive. Next for the Padres’s, Gavin Sheets, one for three in the air to left center. Guriel sizing this one up. Puts it away for the out. And there are two down. Now batting catcher Martin. Maldonado the next up for the Padres’s. This one popped up. Foul ground first base side. English makes the grab and that’s the inning. Padres’s go down quietly and that is not what they needed. Down 104. Back here at Chase Field, here’s the left fielder, Lordis Goreel Jr. Lordis Guriel Jr. and that’s hammered into right field. That’s a base hit. So run aboard to start the inning. Went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. First pitch fast ball in a great spot to do some damage and he squared it up nicely. Here’s the catcher, Adrien Del Castillo. That one finds the zone. Strike one. One strike. Guriel gets his lead at first. Nobody out. That one missed. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Adrien up and throwing. So, a foul ball makes it one and two. Let’s go do it again. Good job to fight that one off. Nobody out. Runner at first. swing and a miss. Struck him out and one away. Well, classic pitch sequencing there to change eye levels for the punch out. That fast ball on the pitch before was off. It was very competitive and that gets you thinking that he might try to climb the ladder, but then the curveball out of that same tunnel just falls off the table and you can’t make contact. English batting with one down. Takes the strike. Swing and a miss. Chased it out of the zone. Knowing if the pitcher wants a ground ball double play opportunity here, you’ve got to lay off pitches down in the zone right there. Swinging at that pitch. That’s a no no. One and two, man. at first one away. And it’s even up. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. And that’s in the dirt. Got him swinging for the strike out. Well done behind the dish. Well, interesting. He’s looking very comfortable out of the stretch after giving up the lead off single. Back to back strike out. They haven’t been able to move that runner up, get him into scoring position and try to have a better chance of scoring. I tell you, good job so far on the mound. He just needs one more out. Alexander in the box now as he leaves that one up high. The Diamondbacks up big in this one here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Inside and it’s 2 and 0. just missed. Next offering is in for a strike. Three in one. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. And ball four, two aboard. Not what he wanted to do right there, Boo. That keeps this inning alive. Puts a runner in scoring position and a chance for this offense to add on to their lead. Here comes a skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Number 76 won’t go any further tonight. And the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. Now pitching for Yuki Matsui gets the call from the pen. Well, they need someone to stop the bleed and keep the score right where it is. Seems like a tough task today with the way this lineup is swinging. It first and second, two down. Now up next for Arizona, Jorge Barrosa. Pitch misses and that’s ball one. Two on, two outs. Pop foul out of play off to the right. Two on, two outs. Swings through that one out in front that time. One ball, two strike. Swinging a miss. And he got him. That’s the third out. Inning over back now. And on the mound, the closer Kevin Ginkle and he’s got a nice lead to work with, so he should come in throwing strikes, attacking these hitters. Number 37, Kevin Gle. Back to the top of the order now. Up now the Padre leadoff man. Fernando Tatis Jr. 0 for three in this one. Next offering popped in the air right field. Makes the grab on the run and there’s one away. Now batting the first baseman, Luis Luis, the next up for the Padres’s. That one catches the zone and that is strike one. Impressed that he went right after him on that first pitch. That’s the key. Try to get ahead in the count and you can play around a little bit more as the bat expands. in the air left field. Guriel makes the play and there’s two away. Up next for the Padres’s, third base. Last chance for the Padres’s, Manny Machado. The next up for the Padres’s, that one catches the corner for a strike. That’s in there. Oh, and two now. This guy’s not wasting any pitches. Hitters got to get into swing mode. This is a good time to expand the zone. throw something maybe down in the dirt and Machado able to spoil that pitch. Ginkle is just one strike away. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. Two down to line drive, base hit right field. Up next for the Padres’s, centerfielder Jackson. So, here’s the cleanup hitter, Jackson Merrill. Struck out on just three pitches last time at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. Machado, the runner at first with two gone. They’re down to their final strike. And a bat like this is almost over as it begins. In this situation, you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make contact. Next one misses. One and two to count. That turns out to be a really good take right there. But you don’t want to end this game with the bat on your shoulder. this to third and that’s a fair ball. Machado around second and that’s a double. Good two strike hitting right there. Move. A bit of a lost start for some. So that was nicely done to beat the odds. Just found a way to slap that ball down the third baseline. That’s really excellent bat control. And it kind of goes back to all those drills you see hitters do off the tee where it’s placed in different spots. That was just nice. So two down. It’s Ander Bogarts now. Right through there for a strike. two outs. He swings and fouls one off. Well, he gave up on that pitch early and it ended up staying in the zone. I’m sure he’s kicking himself and would like that pitch again. Swing and miss. came out and that is the ball game. I’d say you’re lying if you say you don’t feel a fivegame losing streak. This W definitely helps them relax a little bit and take some of the pressure off from it going to a six, seven, or even an eightgame losing streak. 104 is how it ends. Roger Dodger ground beef control for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shambi saying so long. Heat. Heat. What the heat?
