Will Burrow & Bengals “OFF THE CHARTS offense” take them to Super Bowl? | THE HERD w/ Colin Cowherd
Uh Albert Brerier has been to 17 training camps so far this season. He is at the Kansas City Chiefs camp and they actually have an urgent need at left tackle and they went and got a kid at Ohio State that got banged up but is supposed to be some people have said Josh Simmons is going to be the steel of the late first round. And by the way, the two times the Chiefs had been blown out in a playoff game. They’ve had a left tackle issue. So, you know, you pay the quarterback. It that becomes one of those positions. How many people can you pay? What do you hear on the that that could be tuni left, so you probably won’t be as good on the interior. You can’t be average at left tackle. How are they there? They look great. And I I’ll say this, Colin, like there’s not even a competition at that spot. That’s how impressed they are with Josh Simmons. He has taken every single first team round through three weeks of training camp. No one else is working there. Just Josh Simmons. they feel like he is rare physically. There’s no sign of the injury which that’s a bad injury for a big man patellar tendon. So, um that box has been checked and that was a big one for a lot of teams going into the draft. And he has shown increased maturity. He’s working really hard. And so, you know, I think a lot of people came into camp and said, “Okay, is Simmons going to be ready? Is it going to be Simmons or Jaylen Moore at left tackle?” Now, the question is, who’s going to be the right tackle? It’s gotten to the point where Josh Simmons is cemented in there as the Chief’s left tackle and they got Jawan Taylor and Jaylen Moore um competing at right tackle which means you’re either going to have a backup swing tackle making 15 million per year or 20 million per year which is a pretty good problem to have when you consider how the season ended last year for them. So, it’s interesting. The NFC North, the Bears have been noisy. The Vikings have been noisy. The Lions uh lost their coordinators. And you were at the Green Bay camp. It may be the quietest camp in the I haven’t heard a story from the Green Bay Packers camp, which I think both you and I love that they’re just, you know, and I think we forget that Jordan Love wasn’t healthy for two different times during the year and they won double figure games. What was your takeaway on the very very quiet Green Bay Packer camp? Yeah. Yeah. I mean, just talking to to Jordan, like I mean, really until the end of the year, he wasn’t fully healthy because you had the knee, then you had the groin. And so, he was really figuring out how to play with these injuries through a good portion of the year. And I know he’s been criticized that he wasn’t as good as he was at the end of the year before, but they still made the playoffs and they were still competitive with the Super Bowl champions when they got there. So, um, you know, look, like I think Jordan Love is in this grouping of players with the Packers where they feel like they’ve done a good job putting a lot of solid guys in the roster, right? And they’ve got a lot of these guys who are going to be up for contracts in the next few years. So, can the good players on their roster become great players? And, you know, that’s in the receiver room with guys like Denton Wix and Jaden Reed, Christian Watson when he comes back off the injury, Matthew Golden coming in from Texas. What does the left tackle position look like? Is it Rasheed Walker? Is it Jordan Morgan who’s been playing guard for them as a former first round pick? On defense, they’ve got four first round picks on their defensive line between Van Ness, Gary Clark, and Wyatt. Is there a 15 sack guy in that group? And then at corner, you got a guy like Bo Melton moving over from the offensive side. So, they feel really good about their roster across the board. Like, there aren’t a lot of holes there. Edin Cooper is another name I should mention, a guy who’s got really high ceiling. And now I think for the Packers it’s if they’re going to go from being a nine or a 10 or 11 win team to being a 12 or 13 win team that’s playing home games in the playoffs, I think they’re going to need a handful of those guys to elevate from being pretty good players on a balanced roster to becoming great players. So Cincinnati Bengals the last year Joe Burrow did not even hide. He was perpetually grumpy and I think a lot of it was he knew he’s sending a signal. We have to not let’s let’s get Trey Hendrickson in there. What was your takeaway a couple days in Cincinnati’s camp that the offense is going to be incredible. the ball hit the ground twice um at the practice that I was at and yes it’s it’s Joe Burrow and it’s Jamar Chase and ST Higgins who have a chance to be intergalactic together but it’s also smaller things like Amarius Mims coming back at offensive tackle wildly talented just needs to play Mike Cassiki is the first time they’ve had a passcatching tight end in consecutive season since Joe Burrow has been there the the heptathlete from Princeton who really earned Burrow’s trust last year Germaine Burton’s got a really high ceiling. It looks like maybe he’s growing up a little bit. Chase Brown um looks like he can be the guy in the back field. So, you put all of it together, the offense is going to be off the charts. I think Burrow’s got a chance to be the MVP of the league. And then the question becomes, can they be middle of the pack after being really bad defensively last year? A lot of that’s going to come down to the new coordinator, Al Golden. And then the two edge rushers to me, Trey Hendrickson, what does he look like when he gets back? I think they will get him signed. and then Shamar Stewart, the rookie out of Texas A&M. If they can just be average on defense, I think they have a chance to come out of the AFC. Remember, Colin, they’re the last team other than the Chiefs to come out of the AFC. So, the offense should be off the charts. It’s just can they be middle of the pack on defense. That might be good enough. Every single reporter, so I have to ask you this, that has gone to the Broncos camp, that has gone to Denver’s camp, has come out of there, Me too, and just gone, man, they like their team. Is that the vibe you got? Yeah, absolutely. And look, the number one defense in the league last year. They got Vance Joseph coming back, which is a luxury because he was up for some head coaching jobs. And they’re adding Dre Green Law and Talanoa Hufunga to the middle of the defense. Those are two guys the Niners did not want to lose. They have the Cap Realities there in San Francisco, which forced them to let those guys go. So, you’ve got this defense that should be off the charts. And I’m not sure Bone Knicks gets the credit for the job that he did last year because I mean Colin just you know I mean look at the history of it right like the young quarterbacks who’ve played really well. Patrick Mahomes had Tyreek Hill when he was young. Josh Allen had Stefon Diggs when he was young. Is there a guy not I’m not saying Courtland Sutton and Marvin Mims and those guys can’t play but is there a guy who is like this great player that’s really lifting Bo up or did Bo just play really well with a good not great group around him? I think it’s the latter. And now you add R.J. Harvey, who they think a lot of, you know, from UCF, um, the running back they got in the second round. You add Evan Ingram that brings them an element at tight end they haven’t had. So like I I think the Broncos going to be right there in the mix. The question to me is what happens in the AFC West where I think, you know, the top three teams there could cannibalize each other. And I think by the end of the year, the Raiders are going to be a tough out too. What um I’m a little surprised. Terry McLaren’s been such a good human being. He’s been such a leader, durable. I mean, he he goes handinhand with Jaden Daniels. Um, I’m a little surprised at the hold out. What What’s going to transpire here? I’m shocked by because I think Adam Peters is really smart. Yeah. Here here’s what I would say. I I think part of it is like frustration from Terry because he knows the value that he’s provided that franchise. And I think in some ways it becomes harder to sign a guy like that because they know how much they put in, right? like so beyond just being a great receiver, consistent as hell, um a great teammate, he’s been the bell weather through some real storms there, you know, since 2019. He was there for Gruden of Rivera, there for Rivera to Quinn, there for the ownership change, there for the nickname change. And I think because of that, like, you know, he feels and rightfully so that he should be rewarded at the highest level. Meanwhile, you’ve got an organization that is becoming increasingly data driven um under new ownership. And Adam Peters and Dan Quinn have done a great job, but they’ve been very disciplined in how they they handle assets. And so I think it’s sort of that the player knowing I’m worth the world to them and I’m symbolic of what they’ve been what they’ve been trying to build here and finally got built last year. And on the other side, you might have some people in the front office that are like, “We love Terry. There’s nothing we don’t like about Terry, but he’s going to be 30 in September. And what does that mean for him going forward? I’m personally of the opinion that you aren’t going to regret paying Terry McLaren two or three years from now. I have a really hard time seeing that scenario, but it is in a little bit of a tough spot. And um well, I asked you about JJ McCarthy. I’m gonna stay away from that. Well, final question. Um the Shadur Sanders stuff is I mean there they it got so zany this week. There was the Browns are sabotaging him discussion which like they they need him to be good. They got to get out from under that ridiculous Deshun Watson thing. So he plays tomorrow. I can’t wait to watch him. I’m rooting for the kid. What are you hearing in Cleveland? I just that he when he came in he was pretty far behind and that there was a a sizable gap between him and Dylan Gabriel just from a football knowhow standpoint from an operation of the offense standpoint and that’s without even mentioning the gap between him and the two veterans there Joe Flacco and Kenny Picket. So he had a lot of ground to make up for sure. you know, teams, and I think I told you this, Colin, teams before the draft were surprised how far behind he was in that in those areas, and that showed up right away. He’s worked hard to try and catch up. I think the reason why he hasn’t gotten first team reps, right? Like, and and that’s been a big thing in Cleveland. Why is Dylan Gabriel getting the first team reps and he doesn’t look great, but Shador isn’t. I think the main reason why is because to be fair to the other 10 guys in the huddle, the veterans who are getting ready for a season, you need to have somebody who can step in there and operate the offense efficiently. And I just don’t think Shador has gotten there yet. Now, by happen stance, he winds up getting the shot to start tomorrow. I think playing well with the twos and the threes against the Panther starters could buy him some more opportunities in practice. And that’s the first thing he needs now is more opportunities in practice. But having to get caught up just from a football know-how standpoint is why he’s been behind since the spring. At the Chiefs camp, Albert Brer, Monday morning quarterback. Good seeing you, bud. Appreciate it. All right. Thanks God.
Colin Cowherd is joined by Albert Breer to discuss the latest in NFL preseason news. Albert is currently at the Kansas City Chiefs camp and he tells Colin whether Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and the Kansas City Chiefs look like Super Bowl contenders this year. Suggesting sanders is behind gabriel is crazy😊
Paying Mahomes was not an issue for the Chiefs. Mahomes is only 10% of their cap space this year. Why do you so want the Chiefs to fail? I know you’re a Sean Peyton acolyte. But I also thought you lived hood analysis. Do better.
Can’t believe a word this guy says with how he pronounced Yoshi’s last name lol
Of course The bengals offense is good against the bengals defense hahaha, they literally suck!
Its so frustrating being a Bengal fans. This offense is eletric, Burrow is the best QB in the business but the defense is once again trash.
How about they make the playoffs again before we start talking crazy LMAO they literally had an “off the charts” offense last year and what happened? 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Why are we all acting like they played a single starter from the eagles defense? Half of those guys won’t be on the team in two weeks?
Love breer. Every report and explanation is so level headed and clearly explained
Absolutely, they are typically given the opportunity to purchase two tickets at face value.
Collin
I hate your face!
Chiefs reign supreme
Bro, that's a few years from now. focus on fixing your defense that definitely looked like swiss cheese first before they get to regular season. Pre-season is different than Regular season. But that defense last night, even starters, were struggling to get things going, which shows that even with a new D coordinator, they still suck and they still look lost at times.
Defense wins championships
AFC North goes through Baltimore.
No
It's a false narrative that the Bengals need a good defense.
They just need one that isn't absolutely atrocious.
They need a few stops a game.
They started getting that at the end of last season, and ripped off 5 straight wins.
Missing from the Eagles defense that Burrow “carved up”:
Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, Nolan Smith, Jalyx Hunt, Zack Baun, Nakobe Dean, Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper Dejean, Reed Blankenship etc 😂😂😂
He won't get passed Buffalo, ridiculous. AFC is stacked hard
They still lost the game or did I miss something?
It's preseason 😂
Shedeur is far behind yet looks the absolute best on the field. Wild.
Shedeur passes the eye test when none of the others do, especially not Gabriel but not Joe either.
Joe sucked last season.
The fact that that man got up there and blatantly lied about Shadur Sanders is insane Nobody said he didn’t know football in college and magically now he doesn’t. You’re just trying to justify the collusion to put him in his place.
Letting Jessie bates go made is miss playoffs
The Bengals defense is as good as the Cincinnati police are at protecting white women from black men.
Burrow is the Glass Man! He wont be playing by week 17, go trade for a good QB2…
That defense looked bottom 5 last night
The NFC North is wide open this season
The Lions and Vikings are gonna take a step back
Will the Vikings and Bears step up?
Nope! 👎 Bad defenses will get exposed!
The dysfunctional patriots beat them last year 16-10
Translation: Colorado didn't get Shadeur ready for the NFL, and how pro offenses work.
Sounds like he was winging it, and now he has to enter the real world
Media really thinks we’re stupid. Sanders is not way behind Gabriel in anything.
No. Their defense is horrible
No
Bruh Tanner Mc looked like Brady out there that defense blows and Bengals got to drop 30-40 to win games it won't last
I can’t wait til you Karen mfs have to give Shedeur his credit. Colin showed his true colors but F u Albert. Karens
Anyone but the Chiefs!
Joe Thomas (Hall of Famer) says he looks better Albert… Colin, why didn’t you bring that up?? We know why.
Why do we keep saying the Bengals are legit contenders? The 1st team defense was getting shredded by Philly backups last night. The organization is terrible. When everyone knows Burrow has to drop back and sling it 50 times a game just to outscore the other team, it gets hard to sustain. Not to mention they just can't win in the beginning of the year. We can't just ignore all this stuff every year. Burrow and the offense are great, but can't win a SB without the defense at least being competent. No shot we should put the Bengals as favorites at this current moment. They need to earn that. Specifically the coach and defensive unit.
No way are they going to the super bowl. Buffalo and EAGLES
