The Winnipeg Jets Youth Have An Opportunity To Shine, But Will They Play NHL Games This Season?
On our last episode, we saw quite a few comments suggesting that not many rookies are actually going to make the Jets. And I thought I’d put my money where my mouth is and try and figure out just how many games we might see from some of Winnipeg’s young guns. Your Locked On Jets, your daily podcast on the Winnipeg Jets, part of the Locked On podcast network. Your team every day. Hey friends and welcome to tonight’s episode of Locked On Winnipeg Jets, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. Tonight’s episode, couple of things really prospect focused. Uh, I wanted to take some time and kind of talk about some of the comments that we got on our last episode. I saw quite a few people uh really feel like not many rookies, if any, are going to make the Jets. And I think in the past, I might have agreed. Um, I think the way the the Jets in the league are are starting to push, I do wonder if that gets tested this year. So, I want to give some thoughts on just how many games we might expect to see from some of the kids. Uh maybe when we’ll see them and kind of the circumstances that they would really get caught up or even start uh for the Jets this season. And then also talk a little bit about the upcoming uh uh prospect showdown in Montreal. Thanks to the commenter who mentioned that was still happening. Uh very funny that it’s hard to find information on the Jets website about it. Would be nice if they’d maybe pro promote that a little bit more. It’s kind of an exciting time, right? We’re finally getting uh closer to the countdown to the NHL season. And as you see on the end of the show, I want to talk a little bit about what’s left to kind of anticipate and uh what to really look for throughout the first few weeks of uh the season because it’s going to be a pretty chaotic one I think for a lot of teams. But before we do, just wanted to let you know that today’s episode is brought to you by Game Time. Download the Game Time app, create an account, and use code lockdown NHL for $20 off your first purchase. Now, uh, you know, for the young gods, for the Jets, right? We’ve already had a few make NHL debuts over the past couple of seasons, but, you know, we haven’t really had anyone outside of like Samberg and Perfetti actually stick around for a sustained period of time. Um, usually when you see guys come up from the Jets, uh, uh, affiliates, it’s usually more veteran players. Maybe you find a Parker Ford in there, but in general, you don’t really see many prospects getting too many looks. Obviously, Lambert got some time last year as did the Jup. He got a couple of games, but beyond that, you know, Villia Hanala is maybe one of the few other guys who’s had NHL time, and he really has not played very many games over the last few years. So, by and large, the Jets don’t really graduate a lot of their prospects, but I think in my mind, uh, based on what we’re seeing with how the Jets are drafting and sort of this re-emphasis on, u offensive production, uh, through maybe, you know, a really aggressive forcheing game and just a constant motor, I think the Jets are trying to change the team’s philosophy, which is a great thing. I think that renewed focus on how they draft and what they try to project to to bring into this team could really benefit a lot of the middle and bottom six. It might not, you know, get you the world’s top end talents on the very first line, but if you can fill a lot of the depth roles, maybe it’ll make things easier going for the biggest players out there on the trade market or, you know, in other circumstances. But, uh, when we look at our young guns, um, obviously the first guy that really comes to mind is Nikita Tribukov. Now, I think he’ll probably play around 40 to 45 games this season. Um I I do think he’ll probably start with the Jets. Uh I do wonder if he’s going to have some issues maybe, you know, some of the defensive lapses early, but I think there was a plan for him to play more NHL games at some point last year, maybe uh right before the start of the postseason until he broke his ankle. That kind of really curtailed things. Um, I think any opportunities that he might have had to come in during the playoffs immediately got derailed. Uh, I doubt Arneal really would have put him in unless there was um a lot of pressure and maybe the Jets were really underperforming, but I think that there was a chance for him to have played some more games than he did last year. So, this year I think he’s probably going to win a spot out of camp. Um, I’ve seen some discussions about Keka and Pearson and some of these other guys. I don’t know that their spots are locked in. Uh, I think that they would might, you know, they might be fighting more with the Gustosons of the world, less so, you know, some of your more higherend prospects, especially Chipperov because like Chipperov has already done about as much as you can at the AHL level and he has demonstrated that a lot of his game in very limited stints here at the NHL level does translate. So, I think he’ll probably be a little bit more of a mainstay player this year and health willing uh and performance willing. I expect him to stay at least half the season, right? Um and I wouldn’t be shocked if he does it in October. Uh controversial, I know, uh apparently controversial, but I I do think he’s the guy that’s got the inside track. Lambert’s the one that’s a little harder to gauge. Uh Brad, I expect to play between 20 and 25 games, 30 at the max, and I think it would be in the second half of the season. Uh I expect the Jets to kind of roll through November and December trying to uh consolidate an early playoff position and probably roll a pretty vet heavy lineup. But as injuries and fatigue take over, uh not to mention, you know, the Olympics coming up in February, I think that there will be more opportunities maybe to give the kids a little bit more time uh once the guys are back from the Olympics. Obviously, there will be some additional fatigue for those who are participating on the national teams. A lot of the players for the Jets will have already had rest, but some of their biggest stars are going to be playing pretty important roles for some of these national teams. So, uh this could be a good opportunity maybe to you know throw out a couple of kids uh maybe one or two into the lineup to see if they can uh you know maybe arrest some of the starters, give them some time off. Um, you know, I’m talking about the Kyle Connor and and you know, obviously Connor Halib of the world. Heli probably won’t need too too much rest, but uh I would imagine, you know, maybe Comry plays a little bit more. Maybe you have a game or two for Lambert to try and rest some of the guys. Just something for some load management because um obviously once you get towards the the back half of the season, that’s really the push for the playoffs and you want everyone healthy and as rested as they possibly can be. So maybe then you’ll see a slight bit of rotation. Not a lot, but maybe just a little bit to uh give a guy a break. I do think Lambert’s probably one of the uh top three callup options. Um and I I do wonder if maybe we see him a little bit earlier this season if the Jets are struggling to create offense. If Winnipeg is looking very sluggish and Lambert starts off his moose year having pretty decent numbers, I it wouldn’t shock me to maybe see him get an earlier call up, but I I really do feel like if he does play this year, it’s going to be in the second half of the season. I think um the Jets will want to see him really cook with the Moose. And if things really don’t take flight, I wonder if there starts to be discussion around moving him for an NHL piece because the Jets roster as is is is solid, but it’s really not going to be great for the playoffs. It’ll be fine during the regular season, but um in the postseason where the skill and the speed becomes an issue, that might be where they need to make a play for somebody if they’re in a good playoff spot. The last guy that I well there are two other guys that I could see playing. Um I think Salam Monson might make his NHL debut this year. Uh but not more than five games. They would really be under very emergency situations and I just don’t think it’s that likely. Um but if he really has a good moose here, maybe at the very end of the season you see him for a game or two. I think the Jets are internally very high on him. Uh it’s it’s not hard to see why, but again, you know, with the Jets having a pretty big log jam on D um and Winnipeg likely needing to uh balance that out, I don’t anticipate him playing more than just one of those end of the year kind of throwaway games. Joerger, he’s a little more of an X-factor. Um I think he might play uh maybe like two to three games and kind of in a similar vein to Salammonson. Um, but you know, the Jets have kind of been looking for a real offensively minded 2C. And I know somebody mad it was might have mentioned, uh, you know, the Jets don’t need a 2C, but a lot of the guys on that list you brought up are are really depth players. They’re not 2C’s on most top end contenders. Nomes is not. Um, Baron is really not. Uh, Lowry’s probably the guy who could do it the best. Um, Taves maybe. We just don’t really know. And so the Jets might really want to give Joerger something of a look, especially if he has a big preseason. Now, he will not start out this year with the Jets from what I can see. I I would really be shocked if that happens. Uh but at the end of the year, don’t be surprised if he gets a call for an NHL debut. Um I think he might get a little bit of a cup of coffee, especially if Winnipeg is trying to figure out what they need um you know, come March time. if Joerger’s really killing it with the moose, maybe um they can do sort of a an internal rental of a sort and just call up one of their young guns to fill one of those voids. But curious to know if you think some of these timelines make sense. Uh if you think any of them are over ambitious. I I know the Jets history with rookies and youth is not great recently. But I I just think that the the tides are starting to shift and maybe Winnipeg is going to shift with them. But leave your thoughts in the comments below or at my social medias at hlivinglo and at l winnipeg jets. Speaking of prospects, want to talk about the prospect showdown because I think that could be a really exciting time for Winnipeg fans. The Jets finally have a reasonably filled uh prospect pool even if the very top of it is a little more limited. Want to chat about who to keep an eye out for um and why this one in particular might be very interesting with some of the competition they’ll be facing being pretty dang talented. Hey friends and welcome back to this episode of Lockdown Winnipeg Jets, part of the Lockdown podcast network, your team every day. Every day, thank you so much for rejoining us on tonight’s episode as we are uh chatting a little bit about, you know, some prospect stuff. I I think I’m pretty hyped about the Jets pool right now. Um I’m probably a little more bullish than I should be. You know, obviously prospects are always just they’re lottery tickets, right? Um, and I think Winnipeg hasn’t exactly drafted a ton of guys in the elite range, but listen, I think the Jets when it comes to how they’ve drafted, um, I’ve said this for a few years now, they get really good value for where they pick. you know, there may not be, you know, the the Conor McDavids of the world in their pool, but they’ve drafted really well with very projectable tool sets and in my mind, a couple of particular styles and and and and uh archetypes of player that I think could really translate to playing NHL games. Uh there’s a solid floor for a lot of these kids. Um there are some really intriguing tool sets and I think the Jets, you know, their their drafting staff, um and prospect scouting staff has actually done well enough to where I I don’t really understand why there’s kind of been a disconnect between the the prospect scouting staff and, you know, some of the more professional scouting staff because you look at how the Jets draft and how they trade and sometimes they’re kind of divergent. So, it’ll be very interesting to see if uh maybe these two parts of the org start to interface a little more. Maybe we see a little bit more of a unification of philosophies. Um I I I doubt it. I think a lot of folks are kind of setting their ways, but you know, amidst all of this, we still have plenty of prospects to look forward to and we’re going to get to see them in the prospect showdown. In the past, the Jets have sort of done the Pentictton thing, but obviously Pentictton has been suspended by the, uh, Canucks. And so, um, thanks to the commenter who pointed out that the prospect showdown is happening. Uh, I do I finally remembered that this was even announced a few months ago. Um, but it’s it’s a pretty small window, just a couple of games. It’ll be on the 13th and 14th of September. And the Jets, their first couple of games of uh, NHL action this upcoming season, it’s going to be against the Canadians and then the Senators. Um, what’s kind of fun about these games is, you know, obviously the stakes are low, uh, at least on the outside, but I think for a lot of the prospects, they want to prove that they have, uh, what it takes to really be given preference in the pecking order, uh, to prove that they might be closer to pro duty than some of the other guys. And if the Jets do their usual thing of maybe inviting some kids from the NCAA, this could be a really intriguing time. Um, and obviously, you know, college hockey is about to get a big influx of talent with the whole, uh, junior leagues agreements. So, that’s going to be very interesting. Uh, right now that won’t really impact the Jets too much, but maybe in the future it will. So, you know, the future I think for all of these prospects will be fascinating. And this tournament, uh, it’s again very short, just a little bit of a showcase, but, you know, I think Winnipeg’s going to be fielding some pretty interesting players. And I I look at it like a clingel as a guy that I’m very intrigued to see. uh come over and and maybe spend some time here in camp. Um Klingo has a lot of skill, but he has some very cosmetic parts of his game that definitely need work. Doesn’t really attack the slot too closely and is more of a perimeter scorer, but has loads of skill for days and could be really interesting. I’d also be keeping a close eye on Kevin He. Uh he had, you know, maybe a bit of a slower second half of the season with Niagara, which kind of makes sense. He was scoring like 6,000 points a game to start the season. So, uh, you know, his his point, uh, his points pace going to like maybe one to one and a half points per game is more normal, right? It’s like humans. So, um, I think what I’m intrigued to see with him is how his shot translates and, you know, what he does to score because a lot of his goals this past year, uh, kind of came from maybe some league goalending and stuff, but the way that he creates offense where he’s constantly buzzing around the net, he’s constantly skating and looking for chances. Uh, that stuff is a very repeatable uh, skill set, a very good tool set, and he is very elusive in space. So, uh, I’m, you know, obviously a very big fan of him. I think that he’s got some real chances to make um a significant impact on this Jets team and I I do think he’s going to be a locker room favorite. I think he’s going to be a guy who eventually wears a letter if he sticks with the Jets long enough. He got his ELC already in so it’s clear that it’s not just me that thinks the world of him. Um another guy that I’m very curious about, Kieran Walton. Walton obviously had a couple of Moose games and had a point or two in those uh first couple of games in his early goings. I I think people are like super super hyped on him and I am too, but I will say I think he’s probably a little further off. So, I’m curious to see if a summer of maybe some work on his skating and development is going to have some sort of an impact. He’s got a huge frame and that can be a little challenging to work with. Uh but also his skating stride wasn’t like the most fluid or fastest at the junior level, right? And so, you know, with him I I don’t think you want to rush him. you want to give him time to really grow into his frame, physically mature and develop. He’s got a very tall frame. He’s uh he, you know, he can actually skate very powerfully when he, you know, finally hits that top gear. And he has loads of skill for days. Uh his vision and passing and hands are so soft. He’s got, you know, a a high IQ. And so I think, you know, if you’re looking for a guy who could have that legitimate top six upside, you know, Walton may have the most projectable elite skills of of a lot of our prospects. Not to say that the other kids won’t reach that, but Walton right now feels like the guy who’s really grown astronomically. Um, I wouldn’t call him a Tae Thompson just yet because Thompson had a much later bloom. It kind of seems like Walton has sort of caught on to some better habits early and is, you know, being fast-tracked to that. So, if he can develop into a Thompson at, you know, a much earlier stage of his career, Winnipeg would absolutely be thrilled. Um, you know, a lot of people in the uh in the post-draft analysis really said that he might have been a genuine steal of a pick and this past season has done uh nothing to dissuade that. Sbury has to be thrilled with his performance. I think the Jets are thrilled with him and so getting him some game time would be uh super fascinating. Joerger I don’t really need to really see much of. I actually want to see Joerger against adults and like professionals more than anything. That for me is who I’m kind of uh not thinking about too much. Barlo kind of in a similar spot. Uh you know KBY you know he he’s an interesting player. I think he could be you know a solid middle six guy. I also don’t know how the Jets necessarily view him. You know, is he a guy who’s going to be more expendable in the future, you know, in a trade package, or do they feel like he’s going to be uh maybe the boon Jenner of the Jets? You know, a gritty uh hard attack, higheffort two-way player. Um, you know, his defensive game I wouldn’t say is like super robust, but he’s got a great shot and, you know, he’s got a pretty strong adult mature frame, so maybe he can kind of uh learn on the fly with the moose. We’ll see. um you know, you don’t want to ever write off prospects. He hasn’t quite had the pathway and trajectory of like a typical prospect that’s really primed for prolevel duty, but that doesn’t mean that he can’t do it at some point. So, uh he’ll be an interesting one to follow this year. Uh the last kid that I’m interested in is Alons Frey. Uh Frey we haven’t had too much time to really see uh just yet because he finally just signed his ELC recently. You know, he’s coming over uh for the first time most likely. Um, I would expect him to go back to Sweden and and spend another year there unless the Moose try to bring him in now, but I I don’t think that was the plan from what I understand. So, uh, curious to know how he does in the showdown. Obviously, he’s not going to be facing like the world’s most elite talent, but when you look at Montreal and Ottawa’s prospect pools, they’ve gotten pretty good, especially the Halves. Montreal has really built a very robust pipeline. So, if you do well against this team, I do think that’s actually pretty impressive. Uh really hoping the kids show out. I’m just, you know, looking forward to really thinking about prospects for the first time in many years. Uh I haven’t really had to think about them for a while because the Jets have always been very veteranheavy, but we’re starting to move away from that. Uh at least in the future. I think it’s coming faster than people realize. I think in the next two to three years, you’re going to see more young kids take the Jets roles. Um, you know, I think Winnipeg is drafted well enough to where when the core turns over and you start to move out some of the veteran pieces and you bring in these young spark plugs, I think it might finally help push the Jets in a more interesting direction. You know, I think the Jets have achieved a lot with this current group, but you know, the playoff success um was never really there. And so, this might be a chance to sort of refresh, retool, and try and change your approach a bit to see if you can give Hella and some of the top players a different kind of support. So, going to be very interesting. I’m excited. You know, the prospect showdown is going to hit right before preeason. Then the hype really builds and we are finally almost back to hockey. Speaking of almost back to hockey, want to talk about the final countdown to the start of the season. As of today, we are Nino Nether Rider days towards the NHL season. Hey friends and welcome back to this episode of Lockdown Winnipeg Jets, part of the Lockdown podcast network, your team every day. Every day, thank you so much for rejoining us as we are chatting uh about, you know, the the upcoming countdown to the season. We are 62 days away from the start of the NHL season. And you know, the Jets are kind of in a weird spot uh in a lot of ways. I don’t know what’s going to happen this season. Um, I have a suspicion that like the Jets are going to take a step back just because repeating a President’s Trophy year is always going to be really hard and the guys that the Jets brought in to replace some of the departing veterans, I’m not entirely sold on uh just yet. We’ll see how it goes. But, you know, there’s quite a bit of uncertainty and I do think the Jets added a lot of more veteran older talent that’s not necessarily uh playing up to the speed of most top end teams. So Winnipeg may have, you know, some issues. I don’t think it’s going to be, you know, enough to really knock them out of a postseason spot, but the first couple of months for this upcoming year could be uh a little bumpy, right? And this is where I think, you know, this potentially being a transition season uh for, you know, the next beginning turnover of the core, I think could be a really good stage set for the next few years. Um Winnipeg obviously looks at these next three years probably as a competitive window. I don’t really know if I see it quite the same way. Not that the Jets can’t do well in this period. Uh I just I I think Winnipeg needs more to really be that top end playoff contender. And I’ve said it before, you know, last year’s trade deadline really felt like a tremendous miss. Um it is what it is. you know, it happened and and you know, there were probably a lot of factors that held the Jets back from doing what they wanted to do, but you saw a lot of other contenders taking those swings and I feel, you know, I feel like the Dallas series was one of the most painful examples because a lot of the guys who scored against the Jets were the dudes that they traded for. So, um, if ever there was kind of a note about really maximizing your TDL, uh, that series I think was probably, um, a very harsh lesson in it. So, with this one, you know, this is a year where Winnipeg really could do almost anything. And I don’t know what that actually means for the team. Um, they could bring in some more kids. They might go back to, you know, trying to run it back as much as possible. They’ve they’ve gone and done quite a bit in the regular season with that plan. Uh, but again, you know, they have publicly said they want to win a cup. And if that’s really the case, you might have to change your strategy a bit. Winnipeg has maximized its regular season returns with a President’s Trophy and conference division win, whatever you want to call it. Uh but they they haven’t yet cracked that playoff code. And that’s that’s one of the hardest things. And so as we start winding down towards um the start of the season here, you know, the Jets have the biggest decision they’ve had to ever make with this franchise with the Kyle Connor contract. Uh Lowry is also due for an extension after the season. I wonder if they maybe try and do something uh a little earlier this year. Maybe they do it, you know, some way through the part of the season or even before the end of the summer. Maybe they want to get that out of the way early. Um but, you know, the Jets are kind of in a funky spot and I I I don’t quite know how the front office sees this team. We still see uh rumors of Mason McTavish being out there and available. uh Chinikov situation hasn’t really changed with the Blue Jackets and so there are potential upgrades and swings the Jets could take but they haven’t been linked to any of them and I don’t anticipate that they’ll go for anyone given the cap space that they have uh and what it would probably take for them to try and make a move. I just don’t think Winnipeg is is feeling that pressure just yet. If Winnipeg maybe has a tough start to the season, I wonder if they get aggressive early and try and fix things with a big trade. Uh, you know, I I don’t know how I would feel about that. If you do kind of go that route, you know, I would look to to maybe try and find, you know, that McTavish style piece. doesn’t have to be Mason, obviously, but if you’re looking for maybe a young RFA that their their current team is is not forecasting to bring back in the future, maybe this is how you can try and and improve uh some of the depth positions and and you know, find some guys with some upside, right? Maybe some players with intriguing stats profiles, maybe being underutilized on their current team. Uh the Jets are going to have to get creative. you know, this is going to be a very different next few years for the league. And I think the Jets may feel some of that um with how the free agent market goes, maybe even how the trade market goes. It’s going to be a bit of a wild, wild west. And so, you know, as we get closer to the start of the season, uh I’m very curious to know what Winnipeg’s plan for the future is. uh they’re not going to tell us most likely because that’s not really what a lot of teams and businesses do. But if we kind of keep a close eye out, you know, just watch for whatever team moves they make. See what they decide with Kyle Connor. That’ll be the biggest tell of what they think of this core and how they go forward. U and also, you know, watch Kyle Connor’s camp. he hasn’t really indicated he wants to be anywhere else, but if the money isn’t working and there might be some issue there, uh, you know, suddenly your entire season and really the future of the franchise could be altered with a single decision. So, this is a very intriguing time to be a Jets fan. Um, I’ll say that, you know, compared to last year where I thought the team was going to start their transition period, then they didn’t opt to do that. Now, it’s going to hit and I don’t think the Jets have as much of a choice in the matter. So curious to know how you feel the start of the season’s going to go. Um are you feeling optimistic about this year? How do you think the Jets are going to perform? I kind of have them finishing either third or fourth in the central and I think it’s going to be by very narrow margins. Uh I think you know the the top of the division is going to be such a dog fight. I think the Jets will be very close. Um but I think it it could be a bit difficult to to maybe get those extra points like they did last year. um especially if any one part of the team maybe slows down a bit, if the power play isn’t quite as good, if Hellob maybe has a down season, you know, we’re a little bit due for that. So, anything like that could uh impact the Jets uh just in in small doses, but enough to where maybe winning the division is a little bit harder. So, going to be an interesting year. Looking forward to tracking all of it with you over the next several months. We will see you uh back, of course, next week with more Jets offseason coverage. So, thanks so much for listening. We’ll catch you on the flip side. And as always, go Jets. Go.
Much has been made of the difficulty for prospects in the Winnipeg Jets system to graduate to the senior level. That tide may finally be starting to shift, though. Why might Winnipeg need to call upon more of the kids? Are the prospects they’re drafting providing windows into the front office thinking? How many games could we expect to see our closest pro-ready youth play this year? Who should we watch out for during the Prospects Showdown in Montreal? What remains for the Jets to take care of before the start of the NHL season?

I believe because waivers they will give Pearson,Koepke vets shots out of camp. And as season progreses and uncertainty of Toews/Lowry/injuries guys will get shots. But I agree can't see any being given significant opportunity unless things go really bad and we look out of playoffs or Connor doesn't resign then I can see just a 1-2yr retool start throwing guys in there moving guys for assets deadline.
* a vet I expect get most looks is Tanner Pearson he's 32 a little barlely older than Scheifele they are good friends since played Barrie,WJC,and under Hawerchuk,he had 12g15a last year. And how jets treat people like family not harsh decisions he's staying.
