🔴LIVE 🔴Cincinnati Reds VS Pittsburgh Pirates/ August 09/ Baseball Envivo TV/MLB THE SHOW 25
ends park. MLB the show has action out of the NL Central. It’s the Cincinnati Reds going up against the Pittsburgh Pirates. And now, please welcome First Pitch coming your way next, Pittsburgh Pirates. First pitch moments away. And today’s starter, Mitch Keller. and Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. I’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure, he’s more calm and settles in. He’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position. Most guys, they get a little tight, they start to aim the baseball, but for some reason, he gets looser, the ball comes out of his hand with more life, and he’s able to wiggle off the hook of, you know, tough situations and get his team back in the dugout. TJ Fredle leading things off and takes a strike. Edge of the zone for a strike and a count is 0 and two. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field and it falls. So a runner aboard to start the inning. batting at the plate. Matt Mlan. There’s a strike in the air right side and there’s one away third Here’s the lineup for the Reds. This is one of the best teams in the league when it comes to drawing walks, Chris. So, we’ll probably see a very patient approach from them. Yeah, Boo. And that’s often uh what leads to a lot of runs scored. You get runners on base. You work that pitch count up for the opposing pitchers and then you take advantage when they make mistakes. You get into that bullpin. You could tell that everyone up and down this lineup just comes in with a great plan of attack, a lot of patience, just like you said. Ellie Dea Cruz in the box here. Lets that one go for a ball. Outside and the count is two and0. Nope. That’s inside. right through there for a strike. And ball four to a board. Batting fourth rightielder Austin Hayes. And now it’s Austin Hayes. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. Check swing and he went. It’s 0 and one. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. Two on, one out. Hard grounder into the outfield for a nine. And they stop him at third. So base is loaded with one away. all over that one right there. Off the bat, that one registered at 105 mph. Man, that is smoking. And these days, you hear it all the time, but the numbers just don’t lie. If you can drive a ball like that, more often than not, you’re picking up a knock. And now it’s Gavin Lux. Golden opportunity right here. And immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. That one off the bad part of the bat. Just a lazy fly ball. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there’s two away. Batting six. First baseman Miguel Anduhar. Here’s Miguel and Duhar. Keep an eye on this at bat because even though it’s early, it could change the outcome of this game. Look for your pitch and attack it. Swing and a ball popped in the air. Base hit. One run is in. Now the second run is in and they take a two-run lead. Well, there you go. The RBI machine. Another clutch runscoring at bat. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. So, two outs with runners on the corners. Tyler Stevenson now at the plate. Foul ball there. Is giving up a couple of runs, but the pitch count really not as high as you would think. Might be able to get through this one under 25 pitches. Hayes the runner at third on Duhar on first with two down delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. In comes the run from third. It’s an RBI single. It’s three zip. Picks himself up an RBI. wasn’t able to elevate that one, but he sure hit it hard enough to get through the infield. There’s not a whole lot of time for the defenders to react and try to make a play when it’s ripped like that. First and second, two outs. Jake Freilley, the next to hit for the Reds. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the walls. Going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. On the ground out to short. They take the force out. They limit the damage here. Three runs for him here and they move ahead onto the bottom of the first. It’s the Reds three and the Pirates coming up. Back here with my pal Singi and getting the start for Cincinnati, Graham Ashcraft. Well, he’s been a real quality starter for his club. And coming into this one, what stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year. It seems that they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone. So, we’ll see how right-handers do against him in this one. And now the first baseman, Spencer Horowitz. line drive and there’s one down. We take a check of the Pirates lineup put together by manager Derek Shelton. And so far this year, this has not been a very good offense. Well, in this day and age, if you can’t slo and get on base, that OPS has to be at a certain level. If you’re going to produce runs, give your pitchers an opportunity as they’re facing tough offenses as well. Let’s go. All right, Tommy. Fly ball to right. Makes the grab. Two down. Batting third designated hitter. Brian Reynolds here. Reynolds. Ashcraft, 27 years old, and he was a sixthround draft pick back in 2019. That’s in there. 0 and one. Two down. Nobody on. This guy’s pounding the zone. Hitters don’t have time to think in between pitches. Going to count one and two. Two outs. Base is empty. Swag and a miss. Struck him out. And good work there as he gets a one, two, three. Bucks go down quietly. They trail it here. Three nothing. Back here at PNC Park, here’s the third baseman, Key Brian Hayes. Hayes Keller back to work. Fast for a strike. Filling up the strike zone hasn’t been the problem so far. It’s the quality of the strikes that’s been the real issue. And you look at the first inning, that’s what we saw. Too many pitches out over the plate. Foul ball still 0 and two. Ball one there. One ball, two strike in the dirt and the count is two and two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. One out in the second. Boi just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count up at two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. Fredel takes a ball as he stands in for the second time. One out. Base is empty. Next offering is in for a strike. Ed Drummond behind the plate calling balls and strikes. Maybe one of the most respected umpires around the league. He’s not the kind of umpire that you’re likely to notice back there. And that can be a huge compliment really. So if you’re just kind of quietly doing your job, staying consistent with your calls, hitters, pitchers, managers, even fans, they’re all going to appreciate you. Ed Drummond, he’s that kind of umpire. One down, base is empty. Just missed. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Still two and two after the foul ball. Here comes the pitch. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Matt Mlan the next to hit for the Reds. Fly to right. His first time. Give it to him, Pirates. Tied him up inside with that one. He’s done a great job getting the first two outs. Want to get this number two hitter get back in the dugout and face 345 next inning. Next offering is fouled back and ball one. Ground ball to the right side. Takes it himself and the Reds go one, two, three. Three up, three down for him there. Now to the bottom of the second. It’s the Reds three and the Pirates nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Here’s O’Neal Cruz and Singy. We already know he’s going to finish the season with a new careerhigh in home runs. Check swing and he went strike one. A three-0 lead is great, but you can’t get too comfortable. Got to stay aggressive, keep attacking hitters, try to cruise through this ball game. Pirates, that one missed. So, O’Neal Cruz is named after Paul O’Neal. That was his father’s idol in baseball, so he named his son O’Neal. In 2022, they finally met each other when the Pirates played the Yankees in New York. And I’m sure that was a moment that O’Neal Cruz will never forget. Hard hit left side. Throw over to And Duhar and quickly one away in the second. Oh, we talked about how the ball is coming out of a pitcher’s hand. The way it comes out of his hand as an infielder. Wow. Really impressive. Now the batter now, Jack Sinski. There’s the strike. Pirates. He swings and fouls one off. Had some cut action to it. Velocity pretty good on that slider so far. Moving the ball around nicely. 0 and two now. That’s a little bit low. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Hit hard on the ground to short. Throw over to And Duhar. Two up, two down. Batting six, the short stop. Up next for the Pirates, Jared Triolo. That one finds the zone 0 and one. Looks like he’s just sizing him up there. Really good pitch to hit, but he took it all the way. Sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game. That may be a pitch that he turns on. Swings through that one out in front that time. No balls, two strikes. All right, Pirates. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Let’s go Pirates. Come on Pirates. Two outs and a foul ball. He stays alive. swings through it and that’s a strike out. And one, two, three go the Pirates. They trail in this one. Three nothing. And now the shorts stop Ellie Dea Cruz. His home and away splits there. Pirates. And there’s a foul ball. Boo. One really cool moment I remember at PNC Park is the 2006 home run derby during All-Star weekend. David Ortiz and Ryan Howard each hit homers into the Alagany River on the fly. Really awesome to watch. Sneaks through base head. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Everything came together perfectly for him right there. Just a simple ground ball the other way that had eyes on it, man. Sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel, put the ball in play, and just hope it finds a hole. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Derek Shelton out of the dugout and he will make the move. Mitch Keller done for the night and he’s not going to be happy with himself. New pitcher on the mound in a moment. Nowitch, new pitcher on here, Paul Ste. He pitched yesterday and we’ll see him once again. Austin Hayes the next to hit for the Reds. One for one with a single and a run scored so far. And that’s through there for a strike. It’s 0 and one. That one ripped, hits the fence and he boots it. Coming home. He’ll score easily. Backto back base hits. Nice line drive to the pull side right there, but he didn’t spin off of it. That’s the key. You still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that. Stepping in, Gavin Lux fly to left his first time. Just missed. In the air, left side. Fam under it. Hauls it in for the out. And there’s one away. Now batting first base Miguel Anduhar and ready to hit now for Cincinnati Miguel Anduhar. He drove in two with a single his first time up. That one misses and that’s ball one. misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. He’s clearly trying to work him away here. Both pitches off the plate. If you really want to put the ball in play, you’re going to have to stay back and drive it to the opposite field. And a strike right through there. That one in triple digits. Hayes over at second. One down. Fouls one off. Two and two. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Fights it off. He’ll see another man at second. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. had a good eye there. Eighth pitch of the at bat coming up on the ground to third, but it kicks fouled. Oh, he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. He’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit, try to move it around, create just a little bit of illusion at the end. out to center. Cruz makes the play and they’re two down. Now batting catcher Tyler Stevenson. And now Tyler Stevenson RBI single his last time up. swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. Pirates, keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Rudder at second. Two down. A sliding stop, the throw, and very nicely done for the out. Runscoring double here for the Reds. It’s now a four nothing ball game. You’re dialed into the show back here in Pittsburgh. And stepping in is the speedy Leo Pagaro. And that’s a base hit. Had a good start to the inning. Batting eight. So up next, Henry Davis. Davis. Laidoff man on. It’s time to play a little small ball. Get some base runners. try to dig yourself out of the hole. Now, these guys definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Good approach right there. You want to get something just a little higher that you can elevate. Stay out of that double play. Here goes the runner pitching for a strike. Throw save. Sing. He definitely showed off the wheels there. Yeah, and it turned out to be a bang bang play. Statcast gives us the data. And that stolen base wasn’t possible without that sprint speed. got him looking and he’s registered three Ks in this one. Isaiah Ker Falefa up to the plate. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. And downstairs one, no strike. You can do it. And the one swinging a foul out of play. One out and a runner at second. And there’s a ball. And a two-1 on the way. Flying drive and that’s a base hit out into center field. Coming home. He’ll score and it’s an RBI single. It’s 4-1 right there. Does a great job of staying in the big part of the field. Man, there are a lot of hits there. Back to the top of the lineup now. Spencer Horowitz. He’s 0 for one. And it finds its way through for a hit. They get it in quickly. So, first and second down now, one out. Up next for the Pirates, here’s Tommy Fam. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season. So, they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. And that one in there at the knees for a strike. Going one at the dish. Looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot. Anything but the inning ending double play. Boog. swings and misses and it’s nothing in two. One out. Runners at first and second and now one and two. Let’s go Pirates. Swung on. Belted raging back towards the wall onto the track and he makes the catch. Grounder tags at second and he’s up to third safely with two gone. Now batting hitter. So next to the plate for Pittsburgh, Ryan Reynolds. First pitch just misses. Homeplayed umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. Line drive, base hit in to score from third. And it’s now a two-run game. puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI. Takes an inside pitch and just fillets it over there to left field. And that’s all he had to do is gets up to the outfield grass to push that run across. First and second, two outs. O’Neal Cruz the next to hit. 0 for one so far. That one outside. Ball one. And another ball. Tough spot right here. A couple runners on. Two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. Misses with the 200 and he’s fired three straight outside the strike zone. Two on, two outs. And that’s in for a strike. And that one fouled off. So both runners should be on the move here on the full count pitch. Yeah, this is a good chance to tie up this ball game. See if he can find some open grass in the outfield. Ouch. That one drilled him. No chance for a play and let’s hope the righty’s not hurt on the mound. Catcher coming out to check on him. It looked like it got him on his back leg. So, you wonder if that might be a problem for him in terms of pushing off the rubber. Yeah, it’s a great point. And we’ll have to see how he looks, but to me it appears he’s moving pretty well. I think it’s just going to sting for a while, but hopefully nothing more. Manager out of the dugout now, and it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Graham Ashcraft will depart. Not what they were hoping for from the opener. So, we’ll see a new arm on the mound when we get back. New arm out of the bullpen. Sam Mo definitely a huge at bat in this game coming up right here. But with two outs, he’s just got to focus on getting one batter. And this should be fun. Two outs, bases full. Jack Sinski will hit next. He’s 0 for one. This one high in the air to left center. That is the inning. Two runs in the inning, but they strand three. Three innings complete. It’s the Reds four and the Pirates two. Welcome back. And now on the mound to start the fourth, Dennis Santana. Pretty tight game, so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Here’s the left fielder, Jake Freley. Leftielder Jake Frilly. That clips the corner. And that is cut on and miss. And it’s 0 and two. It might be time to choke up a little bit. Get that front foot down early. Maybe even just spread out. He’s really late right now. Swings and misses on the fast ball up in the zone for the strike out. Just blown away. in that at bat. Three fast balls, all strikes. He wasn’t even able to foul one off. There’s not much you can take away from an at bat like that as a hitter other than maybe there’s something wrong with your eyes. He’s got to have better timing on the fast ball next time. Now batting Key Brian Hayes and a foul ball. Hayes measures 6 feet even 215 lbs and they traded for him earlier this year. One down base is empty and it’s even up. Bullpen action for the Pirates. Johan Ramirez up and throwing. Number 47 also getting ready. Next offering is down low. Base is empty, one away. Top half of inning number four. And that one is in for a strike. on the ground. Tosses to first. Two quick outs here in the top of the four. TJ Fel. So the lineup flips over. TJ Fredel the next to hit for the Reds. Singled and scored back in the first. He’s one for two. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. And that keeps the inning going. Now batting second base Matt Mlan. Now it’s the second baseman Matt Mlan. Bowl for two in this one. And the first offering is not close. right through there for a strike. Fredel off of first with two away. The other way and foul ball. fights that one away. Still one and two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Slider got him for strike three. One hit, one left. On now to the bottom of the fourth. It’s the Reds four and the Pirates two. Bottom of the fourth at the plate for Pittsburgh. Jared Triolo. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. The Cincinnati bullpen has some movement. Luis May up and throwing for Terry Francona. All right, Pirates. And that’s outside. Two and0. Golly looks more focused at the plate and working the count after that first at bat strikeout. And a foul ball makes the count. Two and one. Give it to him, Pirates. There’s the strike. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. Full count now. That’s one you always want as a pitcher down at the knees and it looks to me like he’s barking. That’s a strike. Doesn’t change the call, but sometimes it helps to let that frustration out a little bit. Got him. One out. Man, I really like the ability to bounce back right there after not getting the call. He probably should have got it. He didn’t let it affect his focus and he came back with another good pitch to get him swinging. Up next for the Pirates, Leo Pagarero. A single and a run scored and a walk in there and it’s 0 and one. Open your eyes. And there’s a rocket into the outfield around first heading for two. The throw in, but he’s in there easily. Couple of hits in a row for him here. He really shot that one down the right field line and somehow found a way to keep it from slicing. Foul. One thing that was great about the approach. His head was down all the way through the pitch. And that’s how you do it. Here comes the skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Sam Mole departs and he’s responsible for the runner on second. So, the book isn’t closed on him yet. We’ll be right back. Tony Santion taking over on the mound. Still a lot of game left and this game could go either way. So, this is a big opportunity for him to get some important outs and try to help carry this lead into the later innings. One out, runner at second. Henry Davis, the next pirate to hit, went down looking on three pitches last time. Let’s see if he can be a little more aggressive right here. As a pitcher, you know, the runner on second is ready to push things with this speed. A base hit is probably going to be a big run. So, you really have to execute on the mound. Come on, Pirates. and fouled off. Let’s go. Next offering misses now. One and two. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Here’s a one-two swing and a ball lifted left field. He’s got it. And there’s two away. Just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. Here is Isaiah Ker Falefa. Singled and drove in a run his first time through. That’s in there. And that is strike one. It’s amazing to look up and see 88 mph on that change up. Back in the day, that was a pretty good fast ball, but with high velocities these days, that speed differential is right where it needs to be. Hit in the air. center field brings it in and that will end the inning. Pirates leave one. Still down by a count of four to two. We’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth. Number 47. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Stepping in is the switch hitting shortstop. Ellie Dea Cruz a walk and he’s also singled. If you don’t get ahead in the count, you can forget about having any success against him. Pirates. Fast ball in the inside corner for a strike. Ground ball left side and it goes just foul. 0 and two now. Got him swinging for the strike out. Had him out front for strike three. Just a hammer 126 curveball right there, Boo. That was exactly what he wanted to do with it. Not a ton of pitchers can throw a true 126 break, but he does. And you can’t throw it any better than he did right there. Hayes up for the third time and takes ball one. Clober to right field. Way back. Gone. his 11th of the year. It’s 5-2. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. Always scary for a pitcher when a guy can take a fast ball down the middle and hit it to the opposite field. No holes in a swing like that. And that time that ball was hit hard. Gavin Lux the next to hit for the Reds. Let’s go Pirates. Come on Pirates. Just off the outside edge. One and0. One down. Base is empty. Right side. Hard hit and he handles it himself for the out. Now batting first baseman Miguel Anduhar. Miguel Anduhar the next to hit for the Reds. Chris baseball today so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers but this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits and that drops in for a strike. When you look at the elite teams in a game right now, there is going to be the slug. No question about it. But the really good offensive teams combined slug with more contact with less swing and miss. Yeah. And the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those. This one’s into the outfield. Could be extra bases around first and hustling for second. In safely, it’s a double and his second hit. Back against the wall with two strikes, but found a way. When you connect and it jumps off your bat like that, you’re thinking double at the very least. He put a great swing on it and man, he wasn’t fooled at all. So, runner at second, two down. Tyler Stevenson digs in now. Pitch misses there. And that’s ball one. One of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins, the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter, the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter. a little bit high and that’s ball two. Yeah. And I figured you would get Kay into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. Man on second. Two down. That one fouled off. Drilled out towards left center field. That one carrying and it hits the fence. The run comes in from second and they lead by four. He went up there and got it with two strikes. I’m not going to leave this in the umpire’s hands. I’m going to be aggressive. It was in a location where he could get those arms extended that he loves to do. So, nice job right there coming back in that at bat. And the Pirates manager making his way to the mound now as he will make the move. Number 47 out of the game. And as he heads off, we’ll step aside for a minute. Back with the new pitcher after this break. Now, a new pitcher in the game, Johan Ramirez. He’s been so good against lefties. Johan Ramirez. So, two down. Jake Freilley getting ready to hit. Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. and delivers outside. Stevenson at second with two down. Fouled off left side. Come on, you can do it. And that one gets past the catcher. So, a wild pitch allows the runner to advance. Have to be really sure you can make it safely to third when you’re in scoring position and two outs. Got to get that run across. Very important. Does a nice job of reading it. Gets to third base now just 90 ft away. This one in the dirt and well done to keep it close. Two outs with a runner at third. base hit and a run comes in. Now batting third base in now for the Reds. Key Brian Hayes and the pitch is outside. Ball one. When you’re taking your lead over there at first, you got to be very careful. This guy on the mountain’s got a good pickoff move. drilled in the air high and deep right field going back. Makes the catch on the edge of the track. So they get three runs on four hits. One was the solo homer. Last half of the fifth coming up, it’s the Reds seven and the Pirates two. Back now to start the bottom of the fifth and taking over on the mound, Scott Barlo. And he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. So digging in, Spencer Horwitz, one for two. Spencer Horitz left field. Freley should have it. He makes the grab and there’s one down. Really nice job to get your first out of the ball game. Now batting left fieldielder. Now the left fielder Tommy Fan in for a strike. One The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. Swing and a miss. And they count one and two. All sliders so far in this at bat to get ahead in the count and clearly shows there was a game plan in mind for how to attack him in the box. And it remains two and two. Here’s a swing and a drive left field and he knew it. It’s his sixth home run of the season and they close the gap. It’s 73. That one was a hanger and pitchers typically don’t get away with making a mistake like that. And right there he made him pay. Ryan Reynolds the next pirate to hit. First pitch misses. Heart of the order coming through now. And with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. And it’s one and one, checks his swing. Appeal down to third. That’s a swing according to umpire Woody Keller. That one just misses and no one can get there. Now he’ll turn for second. The throw in and that’s a two bagger. Man, those are the types of hits where you don’t feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever. Such a good feeling. Got the top of the ball a little bit, but not much. That was hit pretty hard through the infield. So, I think he’ll be happy with that swing. Definitely generated some good bats. And maybe they’ve got something going here trying to get back into this one. And now O’Neal Cruz misses outside and that is ball one. runner at second here. One gone. He’s getting a little frustrated out there on the mound getting hit around a little bit. Let’s see if he can settle himself down. man at second and another ball. Not really attacking on the mound in this at bat. All breaking balls. So that makes me think they’re not really wanting to challenge him here. And that’s in for a strike. Swings here and drives one. Well, left field way back and you can forget it. A two-run homer. It’s their second home run of the inning. It’s 75. They needed that one, Singy. Indeed they did. They’ve been fighting to get back into this game. And just like that, they’re back in it. When you see a guy take a slider on the outside part of the plate and hit an opposite field home run fires you up because not only is he flexing the muscles to show the pop. That kind of approach you’ll hit for a high average as well. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Scott Barlo gives way two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout. And we’ll be back with a new pitcher. There you go. All right. Righty reliever out of the pen. Luis May. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect the tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. So, one out, nobody on. And here is Jack Sinski. Ball one, no strikes. Still only one out here in the inning. Hard ground ball base knock. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Man at first with one gone. Jared Triolo, the next Pirate to hit, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts that clips the corner. Now, this team is definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here, try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. Tying run at the plate. Runner on the go. Throw to second. And that’s outside. Swing and a pop off in foul ground. He’s under it. makes the grab. Two down. Now batting second base over. So now a pinch hitter Nick Gonzalez. And this is a big bat in this ball game. Gonzalez. Outside low and it’s one and0. Sinski stands at second with two gone. Next pitch way upstairs. Just missed. Henry Davis in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. The 3-1 hammered on the line. Base hit. Rounds third headed for the plate. Throw is offline and he scores and they trail by one. One of the hardest things to do in the game to stay mentally and physically ready for the big opportunity and he came through for his club right there. Two outs, runner on first. Henry Davis the next to hit. fought off fouls. Just missed. That one is absolutely belted. See you later. He circles the bases. Their third home run of the inning and they’ve rallied from five back. It’s 8-7. Well, that swing changes things. Yes, it does. They were in striking distance and they found a way to fight back big time. Looks like this guy was looking out over the plate, but he was ready to turn on the inside fast ball. So direct to the pitch. Absolutely blasted out of this ballpark. Now the Reds manager is out of the dugout and will make a move to the pen. Luis May done for the night and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. So, a new arm out of the bullpen for the Reds, Nick Martinez. And he’s had his struggles so far this year. As you can see, the inflated erra looking to bring that down a little bit right here. Isaiah Ker Falefa, the next pirate to hit. Caught on and lifted in the air. And the inning is over. They bring nine to the plate and six come around to score. Five innings complete. It’s the Pirates eight and the Reds seven. Back now. And on the mound, the closer Dow Moretta a chance at his first save of the year. Well, one-run game. And now TJ Fredel. TJ Fredel. What are you looking to do in these spots? You’re down a run. You’re leading off the inning. He’s not a power hitter. A guy that’s looking to tie it up with one swing. So, he’s going to take and get into this at bat and try to get deep into the bat. Ultimately, however he can get to first base. Well, clearly he was ready to hit right there. Just a really nice approach to shoot that line drive to the opposite field. There’s a lot of hard work and discipline that goes into getting a result like that at the plate. Doesn’t come naturally for most hitters. Substitution being made at first. Pinch running here. Noel V Marte. Noelv Marte. No outs. Runner at first. Next for Cincinnati. Matt Mlan. 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. First offering, and it just misses. If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get into scoring position. in the air left field down the line and it jumps the wall in foul territory for an automatic double. And boy do they catch a break. Otherwise, you’re looking at runners around the bases and probably a run that scores. Big bat coming up with Ellie Dea Cruz stepping in. This guy is one of the best athletes in the sport. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Two runners in scoring position. Nobody out. That one catches the zone and it’s a ball and a strike. just off the outside edge. He’s got a base open, so the pressure to come in and really attack this hitter not as great as it would be if the bags were sacked. In the air, left field. Fam sizing this one up. Squeezes it. Runner tagging from third. He scores. That’s a big sacrifice fly. What a game. We’re tied at eight now. The Red’s cleanup hitter Austin Hayes. And it may be a long shot, but a triple here will give him the cycle. Gets the call and it’s 0 and one. Mlan, the runner at second with one away. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. Runner around third. He’s safe as he gets his hand in and it’s 98. Well, he delivers in a huge spot right there. Well, he’s so dialed in. I don’t think he even realizes how much pressure exists out there. Very easy swing. Nice and relaxed. This is the type of approach you want to see guys take in this situation. And the Pirates manager making his way to the mound now as he will make the move. Dowry Moretta will depart. We’ll be back in a minute with a new arm on the mound. On the mound now for the Pirates, Carmen Majinski. He’s having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season. So this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the plate. So now the DH spot Gavin Lux 0 for three with two fly outs and a ground out. Runner on the move and that is out of play. Man at first, one away. That one the other way. Triolo on to Gonzalez for one on to first, but it pulls him off the bag. Well, they had the chance at turning two right there, but I don’t think he got a good grip on the ball as he tried to transfer from glove to throwing hand. They say you can’t assume a double play. I beg to differ at the big league level, but it’s going to be ruled as a fieldielder’s choice. And ready to hit now for Cincinnati. Miguel Anduhar. That’s off the inside corner. Ball one. Strike one. Got a ball. One strike. Ball to strike. The pitch sliced down the right side. Good eye in that spot. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. Inside just missed. 3-2, two out, runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. That’s out to center field. Cruz sizes this one up and makes the grab. And that is that. Two runs, three hits, no errors, and one left. Top of the order. D up in the home half of the sixth. It’s the Reds nine and the Pirates eight. We’re back and on the mound is the closer Emilio Pagan. And he’s been fantastic this year. Really stingy in terms of allowing base runners. He’s just got great stuff that’s tough to square up. Spencer Horowitz now at the plate. One for three. Spencer Horitz. liner and this could be trouble into second base. The tying run is on with a leadoff double. Well, that’s how you respond. Leadoff man comes up, gets into scoring position. Now, there are several ways that they can get this run across. So, a change being made out at second and on a pinch run from Pittsburgh, Alexander Canario. Alexander. So, up next, Tommy Fan. He’s already homerred in this game. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Well, comfortable or not, these are the situations closers they seem to live for. I mean, you get into some hot water, a jam, tough spot, whatever you want to call it, but this is where they earn their keep. delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95 with the winning run at the plate. The home team trying to pull it out. Next pitch is downstairs. That almost feel like he’s frustrated a little bit. He wants to be challenged. Brian Reynolds in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. So the tying run at second, swings and misses. And the count is filled up. Strike three. Got him. Swinging. Not what you’re looking for after the leadoff double. A strike out. And there’s one away. That’s about as nasty of a splitter as you’ll come across, especially in terms of movement. I mean, that thing tumbles out of his hand and just drops off the table at the last moment. If he keeps it down, it’s just so tough to put wood on. Next is the designated hitter, Brian Reynolds. First pitch and that’s in for a strike. That’s inside. Close but called a ball and it’s two in one. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here late. Swinging a foul out of play. Well, he got challenged with a good fast ball right there. Just couldn’t catch up. The next pitch misses and a full countdown. O’Neal Cruz in the ODX circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. in there. Sets him down on strikes. Now only one out remaining. Well, even if you don’t feel great about it, you got to swing the bat with two strikes in this situation. You’ve got the tying run out there in scoring position. Just put the ball in play. Maybe something good will happen. It just didn’t look like he understood the situation. So, it’s their last chance in this one. O’Neal Cruz digs in now. Lie drive and he makes the catch. ball game and the Reds hold on to win a tight one as this one ends as a one-run ball game. Well, we saw both teams come ready to swing it in this one and they found a lot of success. Couple of touchdowns up on the board today. Pretty amazing and it turned out to be a close one considering all the runs put up. Really wild.
