And of course, if you’re an everyday, let me know in the comments down below. I see y’all. I promise. So, let’s get into it. FanDuel has the odds out there for the end of season awards. These are way too early odds, but I want to look at some of the the big awards here and I want to focus on two to start with and that’s Zion and his chances for MVP and Herb Jones and his chances for defensive player of the year. These are the two big ones to me. Look, if the Pelicans are going to have any MVP candidate, it’s Zion. It’s really as simple as that, right? And the formula and path is very clear. health, production, and team success. Those are the most important things. He needs to play all everyone needs to play at least 65 games, but Zion’s gonna need to be closer to like 70 to 75 games to really count for this. And he essentially just needs to be the offensive engine for New Orleans. He’s very capable of doing that. That’s going to mean more than 25 points per game, high efficiency, but you also need more than just scoring. And that’s where Zion’s Keith gets kind of easy to do, right? Last year he averaged 24.6 points per game, 5.3 assists, 1.2 steals, 7.2 rebounds, and was just good, right? Got to the line eight times per game. That needs the the free throw shooting needs to improve at 60 66%. But the raw numbers are there, and that’s what you’re looking for here. you know, if he can up those assists, if they really kind of run their offense through Zion more, you know, as kind of like the one in a sense, even though he’s not a one, but he’s kind of playing more like a guard, that’s how he’s going to win MVP. He’s not going to be a Nicolola Joic kind of guy where you’re averaging a triple double. The points, 10 plus assists per game and easy 10 rebounds. And Joic does it kind of out of the mid to high post with just incredible vision, vision, and passing ability and just really ridiculous skill. Zion, if he’s going to do this and win MVP, kind of being that kind of offensive engine that scores and dishes out assists, too, is going to be closer to Shay Gilis Alexander. It’s going to be him driving, attacking, putting pressure on the rim, and then kicking out to open shooters. Look, Shay Gildas Alexander worthy MVP, don’t get me wrong, but this is not like he’s like a maestro of the pick and roll, all like a Chris Paul or one of those type of lead guards. This is someone who just gets downhill, forces defenses to rotate over to cover him and take that away and then finds the open man. That’s what Zion does. That’s exactly how Zion plays, right? So, there’s no reason to think that Zion can’t kind of have an MVP caliber season like Shay Gilis Alexander did. Shay isn’t even like the biggest shooter, right, in the league. He’s not like dropping tons of threes on you, ridiculous shots like Steph Curry. He plays downhill, gets fouled, goes to the line or scores at the rim, and then just kicks out to open shooters. That’s all Zion needs to do here. The fact that Zion did all of that last year, if you can up his assist to six or seven per game, so one or two more per game, I think is very realistic, especially because assists require other guys making their shots and the Pelicans were just a bad offensive team this year. But if he can do that and get back to some of the efficiency, it definitely dipped at times last season. He’s going to be in the MVP conversation as long as the Pelicans are say top three in the West. You know, part of that is also the narrative to it, right? Voters are going to take notice of that. No one was expecting, no one’s going to be expecting the Pelicans to be good next year. So, somehow they’re top three in the West. Zion’s the best player on the team. eyes are open and people are going to be paying attention and Zion’s gonna get a lot of love assuming he’s healthy and is the reason that’s happening. That’s the type of thing that could at least get him into the top five of MVP voting. Right now, he is the 24th best odds per FanDuel. It’s plus 25,000. So, he’s kind of an afterthought when it comes to it. Herb Jones is this one makes me go like WTF. What the Herb Jones defensive player of the year candidacy. He is the, get this, 25th best odds. 25th best odds for defensive player of the year, which is just absolutely like mindblowing to me how that is a thing, right? This is someone who just a year ago was the first team all defense, finished fifth in defensive player of the year, and was the like first non- bigman on that list. The four in front of him were all big men, were all centers, right? Which is that tends to be who often wins it. not always, but often wins it because, you know, they block shots, they grab rebounds, that kind of thing. It’s just easier to quantify them. Herb Jones is already one of the best, if not the best perimeter defenders in the league. But if he wants to win this award, right, you know, the team’s just got to have success and he’s just got to lock down guys. He guards one through four. If he can throw some, you know, guarding fives in there, centers in there, too, and do that, that’s only going to help him. But basically just locking down as much as you can opponent stars and doing it on a winning team. That’s what it’s going to take, right? You know, everyone knows who Herb Jones is. The national media knows Herb Jones’s name at this point. But if the Pelicans can get close to 50 wins again, and he has a couple of those really signature defensive performances on bigname stars, we’ve seen the stats of like Paul George does nothing nothing against Herb Jones. Kawhi Leonard struggles against Herb Jones. you know, you’re going to go up against Kevin Durant and those other guys too in the Western Conference. If you start shutting them down in their winning games and the defense kind of rebounds from where it was last year to being back into the top 10, let’s say, a lot of that credit is going to go to Herb Jones. I think he’s partially so low again, 25th best odds. What the heck? Because of the injuries last season limiting him, but this is someone who is just such an elite defender right now. This should be pretty easy for him to kind of get back in this conversation. I think of all of the names that we’re going to mention and everyone we’re going to talk about here, the easiest one or the one that with the best chance would be Herb Jones in defensive player of the year. He’s got competition. Dyson Daniels going to be in the running for that next year. So will Evan Mobley again. All of the usual names, but Herb being healthy and being able to shut down perimeter guys like he does is really something special. He blocks more three-point shots, y’all, than like I can even remember or imagine. And that’s one of the most impressive things that he does. It’s hard to block three-point shots. The everydayers have heard me say this for years. You know, when you look into the the play-by-play data of like is a shot open, wide open, contested, tight. You know, three-point shots tend to be open or wide open, like about 85 to 90% of the time. It’s a really high number because people don’t take contested three-point shots because you’re worried about them getting blocked. Herb Jones blocks three-point shots regularly. And when usually there’s not a defender within six feet of the the shooter, that’s a really impressive thing to do. And so Herb needs more credit than what he’s getting here. His odds are just bizarre to me when it comes to defensive player of the year. But I do think that’s kind of a symptom of the injuries he struggled with last season and then the Pelgens defense just falling off a cliff and everyone just kind of being like, “Yeah, the Pels are going to be bad this year.” And they might not be. I think they have a chance to be competitive. They’re going to try and be competitive. So, Herb Jones, I think long odds, but of all the names that we’re going to talk about here, these are that’s the best chance this team has for, you know, someone to win a piece of hardware at the end of the year. He should at the very least make an alldefensive team. Not quite, it’s not quite an award like we’re talking about, but that’s also a thing here, too. So, those are the big ones. But look, hardware isn’t just for the star players. I think there’s some chances for their role players to be in the in the awards conversation, too. Let’s look at some of those names. Sixman of the year, most improved chances. That’s coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans. Today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans is brought to you by Monarch Money. Part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. So before before I talk about what I want to talk about here, just realize looking at the thing I misspelled misspelled chances here for six man or most improved. So if you’re watching on YouTube, forgive me. I was typing a little bit too quickly there. But let’s let’s get into this one. Kind of like more roleplayer e awards, guys that, you know, aren’t going to be the MVPs or anything like that, but that matter, you know. And it’s interesting as I was looking at this, does does anyone have a chance at sixman of the year? The first name that really jumps out, right, is Joseé Alvarado. This is the spark plug for this team. You know, Jose might not win six-man. I don’t even know if he’ll really get votes for sixman of the year, but he should he should be getting votes every single year for sixman of the year. Matt Moore at HP Basketball, who’s also one of our locked on Nuggets host, locked on NBA host. You know him from the Action Network and other places, too. You know, talked about this about a year or so ago. Jose Alvarado tends to be one of the most impactful players in the NBA in terms of onoff and I’ve shared the statistics too. He basically leads the team or is one of the top guys in terms of like net rating. The team is just better with him on the court. And over the past couple of years, one of the things that I’ve gotten a little bit away from is like relying too much on like certain stats to prove value in things. Sometimes it’s just as simple as like win your minutes, right? Like that’s the end goal here is winning basketball games. And you do that by winning your minutes when you’re on the court. I don’t sometimes don’t care about the stats. Just are you winning your minutes? It can be that simple. So, I love net rating for that, right? It shows that. Are you winning your minutes? Yeah. And Jose Alvarado does consistently, right? I mean, what more do you need? He comes off of the bench and completely can change a game for New Orleans by bringing that kind of energy. I called him a chaos agent the other day. You know, that’s what he does. It’s just that gamechanging energy every single night. That should put you in the running for six man of the year in my opinion. Just like as simple as that, right? Like I I I can’t think of, you know, another player on this team that has those kind of big swings and that can be is as influential on the team. Not even the starters do that necessarily at times. Jos should be in the running almost every year for sixman of the year, at least getting votes. He finished six and sixman of the year two years ago. I I don’t know if he’s ever going to actually win, but yeah, he should be kind of talked about and in the running for that. I think a name that would be interesting to discuss for six man of the year, we’re doing it a year early and that’s Jordan Pool. He’s he’s going to be starting for this team, I believe. Right. You know, he’s not going to be coming off the bench, I don’t think. Even when Deonte Murray comes back, I think P is going to still be a starter. The starting lineup to me is Jordan P, Herb Jones, Trey Murphy, Zion Williamson, and then probably Mi Looney, but a center. It it’s those guys, right? until the the next group is ready. You know, next year you would hope it’s Jeremiah Fears starting in place of Jordan Pool and maybe Jordan P can be the sixman off the bench. I don’t see a situation where he’s going to be on the bench this year and that someone like Jeremiah Fears or someone else is ready to take his spot. If Murray was healthy, maybe a different story. You know, we’ve long talked about how CJ should probably have been moved to the bench and coming off and then injuries never really let that be a thing. Would kind of apply to Jordan Pool here. He’s had somewhat of that role in Golden State before, but easily in a year he could be coming off the bench giving you 17 to 20 points per game, shooting well. And look, that’s a sixman of the year resume. That’s just he’s going to start too many games this year to kind of be in that conversation with everything. Um, most improved player I think is also really interesting to look at for this team because, you know, if you look at the odds per FanDuel, there’s a number of players here. The first one that gets you there is Trey Murphy. He doesn’t have terrible odds at plus 4,000 per FanDuel to win most improved player. But I’m going to tell you this, I I don’t really see a world where Trey Murphy ends up winning most improved player. Partially because he’s just good already. You know, when you look at most improved player, it’s really a guy that took like a big leap. You often get it from like first to second year guys, which I don’t think is correct. Like they they should be better kind of thing. they should be improving and that’s just kind of the naturally expected thing, you know, with Trey Murphy having 140 starts already in 251 games. So, he started more than he’s not started, right? You know, and averaging last year 21.2 points per game and almost and shooting over eight attempts per game from three, right? Voters tend to look at the scoring numbers with most improved player and kind of that Dyson Daniels a little bit different because the defense was like so much better, but also he made a big leap in some of the other things he did. It was more like volume and minutes that he played than it was, you know, him dramatically improving. It’s just more opportunities, thus your stats are going to be better. But 21.2 points per game to win most improved player, like you’re going to have to score 30 points per game to be able to kind of beat that. And I just don’t see that being the case, right? Like, you know, this is a guy who last year in 21 21.2 points per game in 51 starts in 53 games playing 35 minutes. Like, I think he can improve on that a little bit. I just don’t think it’s going to be one of those things that wins you most improved player when there’s going to be people who are making a 10 to 12 to 15 point per game jump and Trey’s might be like two, three, four points on the high end because he’s already a high usage player doing a lot. I think that’s going to really limit him when it comes to def uh not defensive player of the year but most improved player of the year. So, I just don’t see a world where, you know, the numbers are going to kind of justify that. Even if we’ve definitely seen him look, he can get much better defensively. I think he can be a better rebounder. That’s not the type of thing that’s going to win him most improved player. It’s usually the offense in those like easier to quantify, easier to see stats like points per game and things like that. You know, I think Eve Mei could be a little bit interesting to look at most improved. He’s not even on the board per FanDuel. You have Herb Jones and Jordan Hawkins in there, too. I don’t think Hawkins is going to have enough of a role to win most improved player. So, I’m not really putting him in this group. I mean, Herb could do it offensively. Like, he’s a guy that could take a big leap offensively. And we talked about it in yesterday’s show with like what is a successful season for him. I just don’t know if that’s actually going to happen. But, Mi is still very raw and growing and learning and you’re seeing that from him. You know, last year was about just showing flashes and kind of learning what works at the NBA level. you know, year two for him can be a much bigger leap, right? More offensive touches, stronger rebounding numbers, and if he blocks, you know, a little bit more shots at the rim, you know, those stats can kind of be there. And then if he’s doing that, he’s going to help the Pelicans win, and he’ll be in that conversation. I think, you know, as long as they carve out the correct role for him. Are you that vertical spacing threat? Are you a pick and roll big? Are you a different kind of guy? He needs guards to help him and others to help him here. And so I think that you could have Herb Jones, not Herb Jones, Eve Mei do that, but it’s it’s a long shot at best, but I think when you look at the players on the team in terms of most improved, yeah, he’s a guy that definitely definitely can do all of that. And I’d be excited to see what his growth would be this year. You know, if he’s not starting, that might hurt. If it is Cavon Looney, that’s going to really change things, I think, a little bit too. So that’s going to be a factor into it as well. So, that’s who some of the other ones are there, too. But look, there’s there’s other guys that could win awards. One including not a player. Let’s talk about that. That’s coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans. Today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans is brought to you by Five Energy Transfusion. How’d the QB battle go over the weekend? What did that look like? Whose reps were great? Ross Jackson’s going to make sense of everything preseason and black and gold in the QB battle over at the Locked On Saints podcast, part of the Lockdown podcast network. Your team every day. So, let’s wrap up looking at two more awards here. And I want to start with rookie of the year. Jeremiah Fears. Eighth best odds to win rookie of the year. He He’s not the favorite, right? And I don’t really know if even the eighth best odds feels a little high for him with that. But if he carves out a role in the rotation and has a couple of really good kind of explosive scoring nights, it’s going to put him more on people’s radar and he’s at least going to get mentioned, right? His path is about efficiency and energy and showing some of those, oh wow, this dude’s going to be really good in the NBA kind of moments. And if the team’s winning and he’s having an outsized role in their winning big if, that’s going to go a really long way towards helping him get there. But eighth best odds even seems a little bit high given we don’t even know if he’s going to be quite in the rotation to start the year, even if he probably should be. The other one I want to look at is Willie Green for coach of the year. You know, coach of the year almost always goes to a coach of a top three seed that exceeds expectations, right? It’s it that one’s simple. If this team is healthy and Willie Green get maximizes the talent in some capacity, especially in a deep Western Conference, he’ll be in the mix, right? If the Pelgans get to 50 wins, he might be a lock for coach of the year. Their over under is what, 32 and a half, 31 and a half, something along those lines, no one is expecting this team to be particularly good. So, if they are good, even if it’s the players kind of doing it, right? like a year or two ago, you could argue that the Pelicans kind of, you know, were were like greater than this, not sorry, not greater than the sum of their parts. You I’ve seen people say like they want on talent. Coach had something to do with it, but I get the point that people are trying to make. There’s a coherent offense and he takes this team that looks questionable fitwise and all of that and they win a bunch, he’s going to be in the conversation no matter what. It’s also going to earn him another contract and he’s going to remain the coach longer here in New Orleans. But that’s that’s convers a different kind of conversation. You know, if he gets to top three seed, like he’s going to win it. The expectations are low for this team. So, if you’re capable of blowing him out of the water, that’s a great thing. You know, in terms of coach of the year, too, with Willie Green, he’s got a lot of room to improve. Look, there’s some good things there. I don’t think he’s a bottom five coach in the league. I don’t think he’s a top five, top 10 coach in the league. He’s probably somewhere in the middle, but he’s got a lot of room to improve, too. We talked about what a successful season looks like for him. That’s better late game management, right? Some of that’s on the players, too, cuz he can’t be out there, you know, making them. He’s not making them miss shots or things like that. But you’ve got to figure out how to do this. And injuries have really hurt him. So, we’ve never really been able to see Willie Green like what he can do with a full roster. In theory, they’re going to be healthy to start the year. This is his opportunity to do it. It’s why we did a show the other day saying like he needs to get off to a fast start. Otherwise, I think they’re going to try and make some changes quickly if this team is not injured. if they’re healthy and not living up to what they’re capable of doing, that’s not going to reflect really well on Willie Green whatsoever. But because he has room to improve as a coach, that’s an important thing. You know, he has room to grow and thus can really raise the ceiling of this team in a way that a lot of other people, players, front office don’t have the capacity to do. If Willie Green figures out an offense or lets Barago do the offense, whatever it might be, look, he’s in charge. If Bargo does it, it’s because he’s empowered Bergo to do it. And Willie Green gets some credit for that. If he’s capable of doing that, if that ends up happening here, this team can exceed expectations. You know, getting into the playing tournament isn’t going to be enough to get him coach of the year votes. I think he’ll be looked on favorably around the league. If that’s the case, it’ll earn him probably another contract in New Orleans. But I think if he manages to somehow take them to top three, that’s what it’s gonna take. He’ll win coach of the year, right? If the Pelgans are top three in the West, book it now. He wins coach of the year. I think it’s really as simple as saying that. And that also then means Zion might be in the conversation for MVP. Herb maybe is in the running for defensive player of the year. It’s all really good stuff right there. Unlikely, but it’s a chance. And we’re talking awards today. What do you think? Who do you think has the most likely chance? Zion winning MVP, Herb, defensive player of the year? Somebody. Mi for most improved, Jose for sixman of the year, Fierce for rookie, or head coach Willie Green for coach of the year. Let me know what you think in the comments down below. And that’s going to do it for this episode of Locked On Pelicans. As always, I’m your host Jake Madison at Nola Jake on Twitter. This is the Locked On Pelicans podcast, part of the Locked On Network, your team every day. Be back with y’all tomorrow.
