Steelers QB Just Stole Will Howard’ Roster Spot

The Pittsburgh Steelers walked away from a win in Jacksonville and a lot of questions answered. I think you look at the offensive line, you look at the quarterback play, you look at the running back play, you look at the defense as a whole, there were questions about is Brandon Eckles a drop off from guys like Jaylen Ramsay and Darius Slay and Joey Porter Jr. He’s not. And at the quarterback position, we all came into the game with I think I think two questions. Does the offense look really bad with Mason Rudolph? What happens there? And two, does Skyler Thompson have any chance of making this roster? And I think the answer is is yes. You look at the Pittsburgh Steelers in their quarterback position right now, and Skyler Thompson goes 20 of 24 for 230 yards, three touchdowns, and looks great doing so. The offense, they had some mishaps. They had some moments that weren’t what you were looking for as the Pittsburgh Steelers or their fan base where you had to look at it and say, “Okay, that was a bad drive after a number of pretty good drives.” I looked at it and went, Skyler Thompson just showed that he’s capable of being QB3. And you want to know who’s not going to be capable of proving that he’s QB3 unless something miraculous happens and he’s back on the field between now and the end of the preseason. is Will Howard. Will Howard’s now in a position where he is fighting an upward battle without actually being on the field. He has to somehow surpass Skyler, who has certainly surpassed him in one game, and Skyler’s going to get two more opportunities to do so. The only thing that works in Will Howard’s favor is that he’s not going to be on the field. If he was, and he looked great, awesome. But he’s not going to be there. So, what that means is that Skyler gets two more goes at this. one of them he’s probably going to play almost the entire game. And in that game or in the next two games against Tampa Bay and then the Carolina Panthers, Skyler Thompson has to show that he is not QB3. That is the only way that the Pittsburgh Steelers change any of this because if he doesn’t, if Skyler Thompson comes out there and looks great and the Pittsburgh Steelers are looking at it going, “No, Skyler’s a veteran. He’s done this before. He’s played in a in a postseason game and looked not terrible in that postseason game. If all of that is true, then the Steelers have an easy decision. This guy’s been in league. He’s been on NFL rosters. He understands what an offense is. He works well within that offense. And he showcased that he can do this still as a QB3, not a starter, a QB3. And the Steelers have an easy, easy, easy decision to make on Will Howard there. and that is just to start his season on the pup list, see if anything changes, give him an opportunity to work his way back, but have zero pressure for Will Howard to actually return and be a part of their roster in 2025. That makes the most sense for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Is it what the fan base wants? No, not most of them. I don’t think I know a single Steelers fan that is sitting around going, “Man, I am such a massive Skyler Thompson fan. I love this guy. I can’t believe that we are not giving him enough attention. I don’t know anybody who does that. What I do know is that everybody wants Will Howard to succeed, but the Pittsburgh Steelers do not care. They look at it and say, “What is the best options for our roster right now?” Skyler Thompson last night proved that he is the best option for the roster right now. And people are going to get mad. Will doesn’t get an opportunity. I know. And that’s the politics of the NFL at the end of the day. That’s that’s what this game is is that you are a first round pick. You get some pedigree. You get the He’s a first round pick. He’s got to look good. You know, we have to do everything in our power to make sure that he gets every opportunity presented to him to make sure that he’s our guy. And if you’re a sixth round pick, you don’t get that common courtesy. You don’t get the same h you know what I think that they look fine, but he’s a sixth round pick. That’s what it is. Oh, he’s injured and he looked good at training camp, but he’s a sixth round pick. And we have a veteran in Skyler Thompson who showed that he could do this. That’s what happens. And that’s what most likely happens to the Pittsburgh Steelers and their sixth round rookie right now if he doesn’t return before the end of the preseason. Now, if Will Howard comes back and he looks fine and looks good and gets an opportunity in the preseason and plays well and so on and so forth, there’s no questions to be had. Will Howard will surpass Skyler instantly and the Steelers will go with the rookie. Why? Because he’s a rookie. He’s a draft pick over a guy they signed to a reserve contract in January that they do not care about. But if Will does not come back, he does not get that opportunity and he is then banking on Skyler Thompson not looking good. It’s not the best situation for Will Howard. Does it end his career in Pittsburgh? No chance. He’s not out of here. He’s not going to get released. None of that’s going to happen. What will happen is that he will end up on the pup list or IR for the remainder of the season or at least most of the season and then you have to go from there and see if it works. But for right now, Skyler Thompson looks good and you can’t ignore the fact that the Pittsburgh Steelers want the best trio of quarterbacks available instead of just sitting around for a sixth round rookie that’s not out there. Again, would I handle it the same way if I’m the head coach? I don’t know. I think I’d have a lot of faith in what Will Howard has shown so far, but at the end of the day, the politics of football are real. And Will Howard, he’s now banking on Skyler Thompson to look bad in these last two games instead of just saying, “Ah, well, I have an upper hand as long as he doesn’t look great.” He looked great. Now there’s an issue.
