Michael Kay on Yankees’ 6-2 Win Over Twins: Is This the Spark They Needed?
And as I said yesterday, you must at least take two out of three in this series. Why? Because you own the Twins. No matter if the Twins are good or if they’re bad, no matter if it’s a playoff game or it’s a regular season game, the Yankees beat up on the Twins. In the last 35 games that these two teams have played at Yankee Stadium, the Yankees are an incomprehensible 30 and5. 30 and five. Think about that. That’s beer league softball stuff. Major League teams do not beat other major league teams, no matter how bad those teams are, 30 times out of 35. And the Yankees do. Now, on top of that, the Twins were ravaged at the trade deadline. They traded 10 of the 26 people on the major league roster, including predominantly most of their bullpen in the days before the trade deadline. It It’s It’s almost amazing what they did, but they did it. So, the Yankees are facing that depleted of a team and they did what they had to do yesterday. They hit four home runs and they win games when they hit home runs and they beat the Twins six-2. And I told you this yesterday and I’ll repeat it today. That was the first game of eight that the Yankees are playing that they should be able to flex and do well. You’ve got three games against the Swins. You have a Thursday off day. You then go on the road for three against the Cardinals and then you have two in Tampa Bay at Stein Burner Field against the Rays. Eight games, you got to at least go five and three. Preferably you go six and two, but if you’re really serious about making a run, six and two is what you have to look at. Five and three is just you treading water. And then the Red Sox come to Yankee Stadium for four games. So, you know, I aren’t going to go over the whole schedule like I did yesterday because that just becomes mind-numbing. But just know this, this should be the junior varsity part of the schedule. But also remember this, for those teams, they’re looking at the Yankees and they’re thinking this is the junior varsity of our schedule. But all the records get thrown away. All the the cold streaks get thrown away when the Yankees are playing the Twins. So, I don’t think that this is a litmus test. While the Yankees have turned things around, this is real life. This is fact. This is history. The Yankees beat the Twins all the time. I think the the record dating back to 2002 um is so outrageous that if put over 162 game schedule, which is a full season, in the big leagues, the Yankees would have 119 wins against the Twins. That’s why I don’t hold that much import for these three games, except if they lose. If they lose, then you really have to be concerned because no matter how bad the Yankees are or how good the Yankees are, one hallmark of being a Yankee is you beat up on a twin. So if the Twins win tonight and tomorrow, you don’t feel great about things. And it’s really important that you win tonight because they’re going to piece it together out of the bullpen. The Twins are and the Yankees have Carlos Rodon on the mount. Then on Wednesday, it’s Joe Ryan, who’s considered one of the best pitchers in the American League. So, win tonight, then take pressure off of having to win the rubber game on Wednesday. So, some specifics about yesterday. Will Warren pitch great? Six and two third innings. He gave up three hits, two solo home runs. When he left, the Yankees were up 3-2. And what I’ve been preaching over the last couple weeks, isn’t it so much easier when your starting pitcher pitches into the seventh inning? And this is for the Yankees and the Mets. Isn’t the game easier? So, he got two outs in the seventh. You know who the last Yankee pitcher to actually pitch six innings in a game? Will Warren the beginning of the month. I think that was the date. Yeah. No, not the beginning of the month. The end of July. July 30th. It’s the last time. Freed hasn’t. Rodon hasn’t. It’s the last time. You know what a revelation this guy Warren’s been. Now, I’m not I’m not making him out to be, you know, one of the great pitchers in the game. No, no. He is well ahead of schedule. He was supposed to be in Triple A this year. He had a spot start or two last year because of injuries. He was going to make the team this year, but then Heel went down and and Cole went down. He’s taken the ball every single time. And he’s pitched great at Yankee Stadium. And although Jose Ray doesn’t jump out at you, and I hate to do stuff like this, if you took out the terrible game he had against the Dodgers and the terrible game that he had against the Blue Jays, he has a great RA. Now, I can’t take those games out. It’s all part of the story. But this guy has been a solid, effective starter for them. And I think he’s gaining more confidence and he knows that his stuff plays in the big leagues and he doesn’t have to be too careful with every single pitch. Threw a lot of first pitch strikes yesterday. Did a nice job. Again, it’s against the Twins, so we we’re grading on a curve, but the bottom line is excellent job by him. And that allowed the bullpen to actually flourish. Luke Weaver, who’s back to being Luke Weaver, faced four batters. He got the last out of the seventh, came out and pitched one, two, three in the eighth, and then they brought Bednar in in the ninth and he pitched one, two, three. Isn’t it easier when only have to use two relief pitchers rather than start to go to the bullpen in the sixth inning? Isn’t it easier to have two guys be on on the same night rather than ask four guys to be on? The math is quite simple. Quite simple. Now, let’s go to the Mets.

This Yankees team aint it.
Nah
Let's not get ahead of ourselves. It's Minnesota…
Why would this be a Turning point? Because t he beat some bad Twins team, team that no matter what the Yankees beat anyway? No
A turning point would be a 10 game winning streak, where the pitching, hitting, defense are all clicking on the same page. Beating good teams consistently, marking the right calls when it comes to the bullpen consistently. Key word is consistency, and the problem is the only consistent thing about this team is not being consistent. Gonna take A lot more than one win against a bad team to say it’s a turn around
Every time they have what should be a sparking win, they shit the bed the next day. They are complacent.
When they win like 10 games in row then they woken up
Lmfao. This cracks me up. Yankees beat a shitty Minnesota team and they think they are back 😂😂
Lol turning point vs Minnesota 😂
No u mist sweep 2/3 isn't acceptable to me
Bro they've owned Minnesota since I was a High School sophomore. They need to beat the Astros, Jays, Red Sox and Tigers to convince me. They have 16 games remaining against those aforementioned squads. They have to go 10-6 minimum there and demolish the Twins, White Sox, Rays, Cardinals and Orioles.
The way they've played uninspired baseball for the past 2.5 months, I don't see it. I hope the prove me so wrong.
Anyone thinking or claiming a win against Twins is the “spark” is grasping. Idc how twins have been playing. Look at their roster. The lineup yesterday and likely going forward is not filled with what you’d call offensive talent or even proven talent outside of a few guys.
Even if they sweep the twins. Let’s see them keep it up. This single win doesn’t ease what we’ve watched over last 2 months. And should give no true baseball fan the delusion that things are turning lol.
Kay's new teeth are affecting his speech.
Michael Kay logic: “we beat the twins one time so that erases the last the last 50 games”
Lmfao so facing the 60-59 cardinals team on the road is a cakewalk for the Yankees. They literally just got swept by the marlins on road
They will never have to play MN in any playoffs (providing NY even makes it) so this is meaningless. How they do against better teams is what tells it all.
It’s just 1 game
Let me help with the answer: NO
This is clickbait. People should block this channel from recommended viewing. Kay NEVER said this game was a "spark", in fact said just the opposite.
Agree
The twins are more unwatchable than we are. That is saying a lot.
The Twins traded away almost their entire team. This is basically an AAA team. Anything other than a sweep is a fail.
They beat the depleted twins. Big woop!
Minnesotta is the spark historically.
It’s been the Yankees turning point since the braves comeback win. They ain’t doing crap this year. Maybe they’ll limp in with a wild card spot. Bounced by the 2nd round for sure.
yeah ive been riding with this team a long time but lets calm down. They are incredibly flawed and have one of the softer remaining schedules. Even if they make the playoffs they will be exposed
Calm down Yankee fans the Twins always roll over for you
Its only the Twins ….. so we have no idea if there is a turn around.
Really didnt the twins trade half their team
Other teams have never looked at the Yankees as the Junior Varsity of their schedule.
No the twins are garbage….your pathetic franchise is done….and I couldn't enjoy it more….not because I dislike your players or organization…. it's your fanbase….they most obnoxious disgusting fans I've ever witnessed…. Even worse than phillie fan…. classless individuals… basically northern rednecks….but worse
Every time you guys say it’s a turning point they lay an egg the next game.
The complete opposite of last year where every time they had a bad loss they won the next game.
ATTENTION: Yankees Fans We Deserve Better and We Shouldn’t Accept The Way Boone manages. The bad trades from Cashman either, Jake Bird, Donaldson, Frank Montas,Joey Gallo etc. .
Don’t Watch Yankee Games Or Go To Yankees Stadium,Until Boone and Cashman Gets Fire 🔥. If George Steinbrenner was around Boone and Cashman would’ve been Fire 🔥 A Long Time ago. Yankees aren’t going anywhere, except home. Lucky if Yankees Get The Wild Card. It’s starting to look like another disappointing season, this is not acceptable Yankees Fans, Protest !
This is the twins they are a garbage team. Yankees will hit a million homers against trash teams and everyone thinks they got it going. The Yankees are NOT GOOD. It’s easy to beat up against poverty teams. Yankees get bailed out every year by facing these trash teams then once they face a good team again the same shit happens again and again and nothing will change
2023 all over again 😢
