Provorovs contract might be the most overblown issue ever.
The Athletic just listed it as the 2nd worst contract in the NHL.
Don backed himself into a corner.
He bet on us making a push for the playoffs and didn’t trade Provy at the deadline. I don’t think that was a bad move.
He didn’t want to overpay for Dobson, again, don’t think that was a bad move.
However, those two moves made us *massively* overpay for Provy in order to not get worse defensively.
With all the rest of the changes, we haven’t really gotten better this offseason. Don seems to be betting that our young guys (Mateychu, KJ, Marchy, Fants and Yegor) all takes big steps. Not a bad bet, but I dunno, I was hoping for more. Very whelmed this offseason.
Yeah it was our worst off season move but I don’t think it’ll be as bad as everyone is making it out to be.
It definitely won’t be bad for this season and next. There weren’t better options out there (for us) for this year at least. We will see how it plays out in the seasons after that in relation to extensions of some of the young core guys.
Provorov’s contract this year reminds me of Tristan Jarry a year or two ago. It’s a universally understood bad contract, but did the GM have any viable alternative? Sometimes, the player just wins.
Probably our worst one but kinda by default
The worst by default, since it was the only one of any significance. (I don’t call acquiring guys like Isac Lundestrom “significant”)
Carolina’s worst move was not signing a 40-year-old who skates like a truck?
Can’t really argue us. It’s a bad overpay but as long as Provorov doesn’t have a just got paid type season it’s okay. Some of the other teams on this are mind boggling though. I don’t think Carolina is going to miss Brent Burns lol.
It’s not the amount it’s the term that is not great. I’m okay with it and that’s all that matters.
Given the high level of compete that Provy was playing at seasons end, I’m totally ok with the contract.
It’s like a 1.5 mil overpay, which is basically the going rate for a FA signing (usually they are 1 mil too much and 1 year too long). He got us good because we backed ourselves in a corner and his agent knew they could get away with a 8.5 instead of a 7 as options were going fast as the last “good” defender on the market (Gavy doesn’t count he was going to the rangers no matter what)
The real problem is Severson contact exists next to it. Having either or would put us in the top 10 for cap cleanest imo but right now we are probably right outside of that but gonna get expensive real soon with payroll
Could be a lot worse. Provy is a solid player who plays every night. To me the “worst” move was not adding more but if the young guys are able to take that next step we can absolutely add at the deadline.
The worst move is Elvis remaining on the team
Paying Cody Ceci literally anything is a worse contract that Provorov’s
I mean it wasn’t perfect but if that was the “worst” thing we did that’s not terrible and they just didn’t wanna give us a didn’t do anything bad.
I love that man. MR IRON MAN.
offseason can’t be that bad if provorov was the worst part. i don’t like the guy but i’m not losing sleep over it.
If we would have moved or bought out Elvis, I would feel much better about this coming season.
side note: I met Boone at a golf outing yesterday , 100% genuinely a great guy
