D-backs vs. Rangers Game Highlights (8/13/25) | MLB Highlights

And one of the more unique pitching matchups we’ll ever see. It’s Zack Gallon versus Mel Kelly. These two guys were great teammates as members of the Diamondbacks. They were great competitors trying to set the bar for each other to see who could pitch the best. This should be a lot of fun today. This is weird to say. Rangers right-hander Mel Kelly, his third start with Texas after his trade from the Diamondbacks at the deadline. He is winless in two starts as a Ranger. Yeah. And when asked if there were any friendly wagers between he and Zach Gallon, he politely said, “We save those for the golf course.” And right away things get strange because we know that Mel Kelly and Heraldo Purdomo are super close. They’re always messing with each other. And right away it’s Purdomo versus Kelly to get this thing started. Whoa. Runs that for seamer up in there. Hey buddy, remember me? Purdomo. No, it’s the cut fast ball and it’s lined out to left. Smith is there on the way. Here comes last night’s hero, Catel Marte. And what a night he had. Made a series of sparkling defensive plays at second base. Those kind of go unnoticed after the big home run to win the game in the ninth inning. Marte sends it the other way. And that’s a base hit. Another hit. Catel Marte aboard. A one out single and he is into second with a head first dive and he moves into scoring position. So that brings up Adrien Del Castillo, left-handed hitter serving as the DH today. The 1-1 has popped up high in the air. Shallow left center. Seager going out. He sees space to Smith who makes the catch and records all three put outs. Nice job by Mel Kelly in that first inning against his old club. The other number 23 in this game. It’s Zach Allen. Yeah, Zach Allen like always needs to be pitch efficient. We know we’re going to Colorado. So, it’d be nice to have a quick efficient game. And now Gallon’s got himself an inning of kind of a stressful inning going. One out walk to Simeon is going to put runners at first and second base. This is sometimes the fear that we have observed with Gallagher. Some hard contact can make him shrink away from the strike zone and it’ll be up to Evan Carter just back today. Rangers struggled a little bit with Carter out of the lineup. Lost six of their last 10 games. Runners block. There’s a swing. Bats out into right field. A base hit here. He comes around third. Smith to the plate. He’ll score and Evan Carter chips in right away with an RBI single coming with two outs in the inning and the Rangers get that first run of the game. All right, you have a rough game last night offensively. Nice way to start is by putting up a run so far on two hits plus a walk here in the bottom of the first. And you got a guy like Zack Allen who has had a really rough year. You get to him early. You just wonder mentally what it does to a guy like that. Merryill Kelly working with the advantage. He faces Tyler Lleair. Kelly gets Llear swinging at a slider on his first strike out of the game tonight. It’s a really good pitch. Nowhere close to the strike zone. Thomas strikes out swinging. Mel Kelly very sharp beginning. And Kelly with a couple of strikeouts in the inning to complete a one, two, three frame. And that is the beauty of Mel Kelly. Oh, look at that. Merryill, the main stay. Of course, you guys have tapped Merryill as the main stay as a Diamondback for years. That’s what they’re looking for here in Texas. Swing and a miss. A fast ball over the outside corner. Big strike out there for Merl Kelly. He’s now struck out three of the last four Diamondbacks hitters. Swing and a miss. He does it. Got him with a fast ball. Kelly gets Alexander. Backto back strikeouts to begin the top of the third. And Kelly has struck out four of the last five he’s faced. So here’s Purdomo, leadoff man. Kelly misses outside ball four. So he walks Purdomo on four straight. He issues the free pass. So that extends things for Catel Marte. There goes Purdomo. Jonah with the throw. It’s a good one. But Jerry is in there. His 19th stolen base. That’s what they’re trying to do. Create as many distractions for Mr. Kelly as they can. Tying run in scoring position. Count two and two to Marte. And he sends it out to left field. The stolen base is going to play here. Here’s the throw from Smith coming home. And Jerry is in there. Catel Marte two for two. And we’re tied at one. There’s a little chaos and it turns into a run. That’s the problem of two out walks right there. Cordomo with a clutch stolen base just in time. Marte with a clutch hit. Feels like he almost stole a run right there. Marte had two RBI’s last night. Another one today. This ties it up. Here’s Corbin. That strike three called. So Kelly ends up striking out the side and that ends the inning. But the two out walk ends up haunting Kelly. Carter the RBI single in the first inning to have him back. Rangers miss his bat. He lines this one up the middle. That’s a base hit. Carter is two for two and he’s going to try for two and he’s got it. A double for Evan Carter. He’s a spark play. That is his ninth double this season. His 15th extra base hit. So he’s in scoring position right away here for Jake Burgerer. Burger struck out his first time up. That one’s hit well deep out to center. Thomas has run a lot of them down but not one. Barter leaves a yard and the Rangers retake the lead. It is 3 to one. That right there was a bomb. He hit that one over 110 mph off the bat. 434 ft for James. That is a true burner bomb. Second career home run that he’s hit off gallon. What a fast ball. He just had a lot of the play. 78 and nine hitters for the Diamondbacks in this one are 0 for six with three strikeouts. Going to be a little bit more. Predommo has flat out walked, stolen a base and scored a run. Purdommo gets into one. It’s going out to right field. Did he get enough? And he did. It’s in the bullpen and gone. Heraldo Purdomo hits one off his good buddy Merrill Kelly. And it’s a one-run game. Make it a 10ame hitting streak for Heraldo. And it’s another two out RBI hit for the Diamondbacks. Two strike two out RBI hit. I’ve been really impressed with Heraldo Purdomo this series. just the continued growth and a true force in a lineup. I mean, he has been one of the best hitters in the National League. So, a two-out rally for the Diamondbacks. Home run, infield hit, and then line drive single. Kelly has handled pretty much the rest of the lineup. One through three. Taking some good swings off him today. Hardh hit ball off the bat of Carol. One home of the Purdomo home run. Martay at second and Carol’s at first. Boy, Adrien DelCastillo can really make some noise. And this one lined out into right around third base. Here comes Marte. The throw to the plate. A good one. The tag. Oh my goodness. What a throw from Durant. Marte didn’t even bother sliding. He couldn’t get all the way to the plate. Ezekiel Durant gunned him down. A one hop throw to Jonah. And Marte didn’t even slide. What a throw from Zeke. That keeps the Rangers out in front. One run in the inning. There were four hits and two men are left on base. at 95 pitches, 59 strikes, trying to survive at least five innings here. Pitch count is getting a little uh little too tall out there. Peterson takes off and the pitch is lifted out into shallow center. Coming on as Thomas, he makes the running grab. We’re through five and once again between these two, it’s a one-run game. Zack Gallon likely done after five innings of work. Merryill Kelly with 83 pitches through five. Since the trade, Kelly still looking for his first win as a Ranger. pulled second base. Simmons throws out Thomas. The inning is done. So, Mel Kelly threw six innings today. Really nicely done against his old club. The right-hander John Curtis, who’s found a valued role in this Diamondback bullpen. 14 appearances. He’s given up just one run. And here is Jake Burgerer. He got the walk-off winner in the extra inning game Monday. The big home run in this one today. Here’s a swing by Burger and a ball popped up foul right side. Maybe a play here and it is going to fall and not be caught. Three different Diamondbacks had an opportunity to make the play there and the ball ended up spinning back past Lleier. He overran the attempt to make a catch. And too many snakes on the play there and Burgerer smacks that one pass first. So a two for four day for Burger. He takes advantage of that extra pitch. Let’s see if the Rangers can take advantage. Not a bad time to add some insurance. Phil Mton it looks like maybe going to try and get a four out save. Josh Young and he’ll hammer one to the alley in right field. That one’s rolling a while. Burger into third. They’ll send him. No throw. Jake Burgerer scores from first. The Josh Young double picks up a big insurance run for the Rangers. It’s four to two. Yeah, that’s huge right there. You’re coming off a game in which you know you lost in one run fashion and you get a gift. Rangers three outs away. Mton help him to the finish line of the eighth inning with a strike out of Lleier now in the ninth. And did he go? The pitch is down on appeal. Yes, says Nate Tomlinson down at third. So both outs coming on Ranger appeals here that McCarthy and Thomas swung back down to their final out. Here’s James McCann and find a way to extend it here. Man hits a fly ball toward the left field corner. This one’s on its way and it’s gone. James McCann gets one back and it’s a one-run game again. He pumped it right out of here. The sweeper this time didn’t have much of a downward break to it and it just caught flush in the sweet spot. Third of the year for McCann and it’s 4-3. Boy, that extra run looms ever so large right now. Sure it does. It’s up to Bla1 Alexander to keep it going. Two outs down a run and hit him and Purdomo’s going to get a chance here. Tying runs aboard with two outs. Mike Maddox out to the mound to talk to Mton. That’s frustrating cuz now you get the top of the order up. These the guys are so dangerous. They’ve been pesky. Purdomo who homerred in the fifth will get an opportunity here to tie the game. Boy, he wanted no part of Purdomo in that at bat. He got nothing. He that no pitch sniffed the strike zone. A homer, a hit bat, and a walk with two outs. And Catel Marte who homered in the ninth inning last night comes to the plate with the game on the line. And already three hits in this game. A home run would be nice, but all he needs a base hit right here. Marte hits it in the air. Right field. There it goes. Marte has done it again. All with two outs. And the Diamondbacks have stolen that lead at six to four. Unbelievable. That’s his 23rd. He did it in the ninth inning last night and he strikes again in the ninth inning this afternoon. Deja vu all over again. Catel’s ninth inning shot gives the Diamondbacks a 6-4 lead and in dramatic fashion they have come all the way back. Oh, his fourth hit of the game. Wow. Bigger than that. Wow. And now Andrew Sullfrank is on to trying to close this thing out. And the Rangers down to their final out here in the bottom of the ninth inning. Simeon hits a looper to left. McCarthy got it. Yeah, Jake McCarthy with a sliding grab to win this one. And the Diamondbacks steal a series victory.

  1. Crazy that all 3 games in this series had a game tying or go ahead home run hit in the 9th inning.

Dbacks now have 4 games against the Rockies. Perfect chance to get above .500

  2. No no no no NOOOOOOOO!!!! Why does this team keep finding new ways to ruin my life?! Now we have to worry about Kansas City in the Wild Card race! We honestly should've gotten swept, and I certainly can wait for Toronto. Sigh. I hate everything. Rangersforeverโค

  3. What was the rangers game plan leaving in a pitcher whoโ€™s hitting players letting up home runs in the 9th inning ๐Ÿ˜‚. Almost like they wanted to lose

  4. Darn Rangers. Always shootin themselves in the foot. They are my fave Texas team , the only politically correct one in the USA, but they definitely are the Cowboys of baseball.
