Ravens Coach Knew LaJohntay Wester Would Introduce Himself to Baltimore | Baltimore Ravens

[Music] Willie Tagert is entering his third season as the Ravens running back’s coach, but before he was coaching up Derek Henry, Justice Hill, and the other running backs here in Baltimore, he was the head coach at Florida Atlantic University, where he gave a young player a shot when no other major programs came calling. That player is Ravens rookie wide receiver, Lejante Wester. From the very first practice in Boca Raton, Tagert saw the undersized but fearless receiver make play after play, quickly proving he belonged. Well, fast forward a few years and the two have reunited here in Baltimore. Tiger, now the Ravens assistant head coach and running back’s coach, and Western now a rookie trying to make a name for himself. Well, last Thursday night when Wester fielded a punt early in Baltimore’s preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts, Lejante didn’t just make a play, he made a statement, one he actually predicted earlier that day. I knew he was going to come and impress people by the way he played, you know. Uh, tell you what was cool about the other night was, uh, that day Leonte and I were sitting in a meeting and I asked him, I was like, “So, what do you think about the city? What do you think about Baltimore?” He’s like, “Coach, I’m going to introduce myself to the city tonight.” And so when he got that that punt return, I was like, “Ah, you got to be kidding me.” And like, “You did you you did surely that by introducing yourself with that punt return.” So that was pretty cool. You know, he kind of spoke it into existence. Wester’s 87yd touchdown return on just his second touch in an NFL game instantly lit up Mnt Bank Stadium, and Ravens fans quickly learned number 83’s name. Fans may not have been expecting that out of the rookie sixth round pick, but for Tagert, Leonte’s swiftiness and explosiveness wasn’t a surprise, you know, but that’s what he does, you know. He’s been doing that since day one when we recruited him. Nobody recruited him and um we got him and from day one he he just showed he was a heck of a football player. From a high school prospect who wasn’t heavily recruited to an NFL rookie already making highlight reel plays, Wester’s path has been anything but conventional. But in Tagert’s eyes, Baltimore is the next stage for a player who’s been introducing himself in big ways all along. And with two preseason games still ahead, including this Saturday night’s matchup in Dallas, Wester has more opportunities to make his introduction last. He’s been one of the bright spots in training camp and now he’s showing that same quickness under the lights. If his debut was any indication, Ravens fans will be watching closely to see what else this rookie has in store. That’s it for today. We’ll see you again tomorrow. [Music] [Music]

  1. We need that kickoff/punt return spark we been missing and a solid WR backup for Zay if he has to miss a game. He is a perfect fit. I really really hope he makes the roster. He was a 6th rounder so its a coin flip, but he deserves a spot if he keep it up the next two preseason games, at that point you make a spot for him no question.
