🔴LIVE 🔴San Diego Padres VS San Francisco Giants / August 13/MLB THE SHOW 25

just about set to go. And today’s starter, Logan Web. Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club. And what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him. And it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point, maybe it’s the motion, but just some way, somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. Stepping in for San Diego, Fernando Tatiz Jr. swing and a miss and it’s 0 and one. [Applause] Ripped but a curls foul. Going to count one and two. Excellent arm action on that two strike change up. Just missed. Man, he wanted that call. That missed by a lot. Two balls, two strikes to count. That one is absolutely belted back there. Get out of town. The first batter of the game leaves the yard and they grab the lead. It’s one- nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. Well, we see this so much more today. Lineups with pop in the leadoff spot and it really puts the pitcher in a tough spot out there where he has to execute right away. You can’t just get over a couple of strikes to settle in, get comfortable because at the plate that guy’s looking to do exactly what he just did. Start the game off with a huge bang. Luis Arise stands in now and watches strike one. Always exciting to see a laid-off home run in an inning. Kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning. Ground ball right side over to first. One out in the top of the first. batting third as we take a look at the Padres’s lineup. This is a veteran le lineup right here. A lot of players with plenty of experience. Singy. Yeah, no doubt about that, Boo. These players have been around the game for a long time and they may not have the flash that they once did, but they’ve got the wisdom to be able to understand different situations, be able to think with the opponent and sometimes in front of the opponent. And you always seem to see a team like this. They come to the ballpark. They know how to get down to business and they understand what the job is at hand. And Manny gets a piece. Swing and a miss. Had him out front for the strike out. You know, varying speeds can be just as useful for a pitcher as movement. As you see right there, it really wasn’t a great location, but the fact that the velocity change had the hitter off balance, and that’s all you got to do sometimes. Ryan O’Harn, the next to hit, takes ball one. O’Harn goes 6′ 3 in batting in the cleanup spot and they traded for him earlier this year. In the air, pretty deep out to center field. Lee has a beat on it. brings it in for the third out. One scores in the inning coming on this solo home run. It’s an early one- nothing lead. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back here in San Francisco getting the nod on the mound. You Darvish. And Chris pitching on the road has not been particularly kind to him. Yeah. Man, you don’t want to be too quick to say that he can’t pitch on the road. Sometimes, you know, it’s just a matter of luck. It’s not having a feel difference between the bullpin mound to the mound out there on the playing field. Don’t know what it is, but I know this, he’s got good enough stuff to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home. So, we’ll see what he’s able to do in this one. Elliot Ramos, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. [Music] That’s outside and it’s two and 0 right now behind in the count. Two balls and no strikes. No free passes. You can’t allow that. And there’s a foul ball. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Struck him out swinging. Slider got him for strike three. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strikeout. Raphael Devers up to hit and the first pitch misses for ball one. And that skips in the dirt. Back to back breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you, that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So I think the confidence level is raised right here. Swing and a ball drilled in the air towards right center field. Out number two. Now we take a peek at the Giants lineup. that exec a really important guy for them. Raphael Devers. Well, he’s an important part of this lineup for sure. I mean, there’s no doubt about it, Boo. It’s somebody that they try to feed off of. He does a lot of things, you know, very well up there at the plate. He’s got a presence about him and, you know, he’s a guy that you really kind of like to watch swing the bat. Come on now. Willie Adamus in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. That misses the zone and it’s one and one. Two out. Space is empty. Next offering is in for a strike. And that’s in the dirt. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Got him. And good work there as he gets a one, two, three. Nothing doing there for San Francisco. They trail here one- nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Now, here is Jackson Merrill taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point, that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Chapman whips it across and quickly one away in the second. Batting six, short stop. Xander Bogarts. And here comes Xander Bogarts. Right through there for a strike. Ball one to Bogarts. Carl Dixon working the plate in this one. You know, we often hear and talk about umpires being a pitcher’s umpire, but Boo Dixon maybe a little bit more hitter friendly than most. He’s kind of tight on the corners. So, we’ll see if that comes into play at all in this one. Line drive puts it away for the out. It’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting a line drive that finds a glove. But you will get some high fives. You know, when you make great contact, you feel like you’ve done everything right. But in this game of baseball, not everything is in your control. Gavin Sheets in the box now. No balls in a strike. Bounce to the left side. Chapman over to first in time. And it’s a one, two, three inning. Padres’s go down quietly, but they lead it one to nothing. And we’re back. Ready to go for the last half of the inning. And digging in for San Francisco, Dominic Smith. Darvish back to work. That’s in there. It’s 0 and one. Well, here’s an interesting stat on Darvish. He has more than a 100red wins in his big league career. The only Japanese-born pitcher with more wins is Hideon Nommo, my former teammate. Swings and misses and he’s registered three Ks in this one. No messing around with the pitch calling in that sequence right there. Four pitches, all fast balls. Yeah, and that makes me think that was the plan before the at bat even started. If you think you can simply just beat a guy with only your fast ball, why throw him anything else until he shows you he can handle it. Now it’s Matt Chapman to third. Machado, he’s in there. Well, that started and ended pretty quickly. No messing around right there. And now, let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases. Stepping in. Jung Hulu Lee. Pitch misses. Ball one. Here’s some fun facts about Jung Hu Lee. You look at the fact that he wears number 51. Not a shocker, but his favorite player growing up, Ichiro Suzuki. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. One of the other aspects of Jung-H Lee’s bio, he was actually drafted as a shortstop, now an outfielder, but he grew up right-handed and his dad was the one that made him switch hit. Mentioned Lee’s dad, Jung Bum Lee. He was a legend over in both the KBO and in Japan. These two are the only fatherson combo to have played in the World Baseball Classic. That’s kind of cool. Chapman leads off first with one away way inside. So here we go. Base runner at first could be running on the pitch. He’s got good enough speed to steal the bag to get in scoring position even if it’s a swing and miss at the plate. Foul ball and it remains a full count. Darvis checks on the runner. Chapman back in on a dive and ball four, two aboard. He’s making things difficult for himself right now out there on the mound, but you know, his confidence should still be high enough to get out of this, but he’s going to have to buckle down right here. Now here is Patrick Bailey swinging a foul out of play. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. One out. Runners at first and second on a line. Makes the grab and there’s two gone. Not fooled at all right there. He was clearly all over it, but sometimes you hit it too hard and right at someone. You’re looking for one of those bloop hits to get a knock sometimes. And now Christian CS. In the grand scheme of things, this at bat might not feel important because it’s early, but it could create a domino effect for things to come. Control what you can here and have a strong at bat. Ripped to third, but handled. And that’ll end the inning. Giants leave a couple still behind by a count of one to nothing. Back here at Oracle Park all set for the start of the inning. Now it’s the second baseman Jake Croninworth swing and a ball popped up. Bailey gets under it. Makes the catch and there’s one gone. Oh, that’s a frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter right there. I mean, that pitch was right down the middle. I think he got a little too excited. Came out of his mechanics and instead of driving that ball somewhere, he popped it up. Unfortunate for him. Freddy Fine batting with one down. Takes the strike in the air to left down the line. Nobody can get there and it’s a foul ball. whacked out to center field. That’s well struck. Going back way back there and gone. His second home run of the series and they add a run. It’s two nothing. Boo. I wasn’t sure he hit that one as hard as he needed to to get it out of here, but it had just enough behind it for the homer. What an attempt at the wall, though. He really gave a terrific effort to try and bring that one back. Pop foul out of play off to the right. in there at the knees and a count is 0 and two. Well, he looks fresh out there. Just needs to get a little more confidence and remember how good he’s been in the past. That misses the zone. Now one and two. Fights it off. He’ll see another. One out. Base is empty and a run in. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. Ripped to short over to Smith and they take care of Tatis for the out. Now batting the designated hitter Luis Arise. Luis Arise stands in. He’s 0 for one. He’s kind of an outlier especially when guys are consciously sacrificing contact to deliver power. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. Ball one. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. Just missed. When you look at the elite teams in the game right now, there is going to be the slug. No question about it. But the really good offensive teams combined slug with more contact with less swing and miss. ground ball left side and that’s a fair ball. Now he turns and heads for second. The throw in and he’ll pull into second with two gone. You know, I was watching his rounds during batting practice today. So impressed with his ability to let the ball travel, go back up the middle and the other way. Sometimes when you step in the box during the game, you get a little anxious and you get away from that, but so far I’ve seen him stay consistent with his pregame preparation. Manny Machado up to the plate. Struck out on just three pitches last time. Foul ball there. Yeah. And the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end. the 01 and a swing and a miss there. One of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins, the longer a played appearance goes for a batter, the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter. Swaying and a ball popped in the air. CS makes the play and that is that. But the solo shot stretches their lead even further. It’s now a two nothing ball game. Major League Baseball is on the show. Back here in San Francisco as we go to the last of the third and digging in for San Francisco, Drew Gilbert in the air left field down the line. And a foul ball. Darvish kicks, delivers. Yeah. And I figured you would get Katay into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. Check swing. No appeal on the ground right side and foul ball. headed down the line and that drops foul. [Music] Darbish delivers on the ground. Bogarts fields it cleanly. Not in time. An infield knock to start the inning. Did a nice job getting there. Good throw, but very difficult to get anybody on that one as far as you had to go and throw, you know. Yeah, no question. Back to the top of the lineup. Here’s Elliot Ramos. And that one fouled off. Francisco. And now it’s even up. [Music] That’s down and in. Gilbert gets his lead at first. Nobody out. Giants. And that one way outside. Three and one now. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. way out front for strike two. Hit hard. Base hit. Throw into third and the throw’s offline. Safe at third. Just so sound in his mechanics. hits against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field. Now it’s Devers at the plate. Golden opportunity right here. That pitch in for a strike. Go and one. Two in scoring position. Nobody out here in the last half of the third. Smoked on the ground to second. Tosses to first and DeS is set down. Well, you’re definitely looking to do more with that opportunity at the plate. Two runners in scoring position, but at least he puts the ball in play. They bring across one run. Still one out there to pick up. Will Thomas stands in. He was a strikeout victim his first time. Giants. Slider clips the zone. I think ultimately you want to tie him up, get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield. And the slider just misses. Got a ball. One strike. This hitter’s looking for a fast ball, but I’m not sure he’s going to get one. Pitcher doesn’t have to challenge him. If he feels better about his offspe secondary stuff, then stay with it. Here’s the pitch to Adamus. Just missed. This is a situation where the hitter is looking for something up in the zone that he can get his arms extended. What you have to be careful of is that pitch that’s up that’s in on your hands. That’ll pop you up in the infield and that’s exactly what the pitcher wants. and ball four to a board. Well, a breaking ball in that 3-2 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. Two on, one out. And now the first baseman, Dominic Smith. Little chopper rolls foul. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. First and third, one down. Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. just misses with that one. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Swing and a ground ball. Takes it to the bag. That’s one. The tag gets him and it’s a double play to end the inning. A run on two hits and they leave one. On to inning number four. It’s the Padres’s two and the Giants one. And welcome back to the ballpark. New inning getting started and now Ryan O’Harn and ball one. And that’s in there at the knees. Next offering is in for a strike. Spoils a two- strike pitch. And he’ll see another on the ground right side throws to first in time and one gone in the fourth as they get the leadoff man. That’s what a good sinker is designed to do. Get a guy to roll over a little bit, hit the ball on the ground, kill some worms while you’re at it. Jackson Merrill, the next up for the Padres’s, 0 for one so far. Merrill in his second season, just 21 years old. A former first round pick in 2021. And a foul ball. That one pushed foul. Squeaks through that one. It’s a strike out. Here’s Xander Bogarts. He’s 0 for one. San Francisco ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. And that extends the inning. Now batting left field. There’s Gavin Sheets now. Left hand bat. Grounded out. His first time up. Close but called a ball. And it’s one and0. When you’re taking your lead over there at first, you got to be very careful. This guy on the mountain’s got a good pickoff move. And another ball. This to third. Chapman in plenty of time to first and that is the third out of the inning. So one hit is all they get. We’re midway in the fourth. It’s the Padres’s two and the Giants one. And we’re back. John Chambi and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Matt Chapman. Chapman. Let’s go. That’s off the inside corner and that’s ball one. This one popped up. Foul ground first base side. O’Harn brings it in and there’s one away. That was a good hard fast ball with some nice ride up in the zone right there. hitter looked like he was on it, but I think that velocity at the end just beat him instead of a line drive or something hit deep. It’s a pop up and an easy out for the defense. Lee in the box with one away as he takes ball one. One out. Base is empty. Giants. That one outside. Ball two. And that is out of play. Here’s a highf fly ball out to center. Merryill under it. Two away. Now batting catcher Patrick Bailey. And up next for the Giants, Patrick Bailey. Come on, Giants. Breaking ball through there for a strike. Generally, second, third time through the lineup, you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them. Looks like he’s doing a nice job of it. And that one got a piece of him. So, digging in, Christian CS. And a foul ball [Music] in the dirt. [Music] Two outs and that’s downstairs and it’s two and one. That one in there across the letters looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. very top of the strike zone. Middle away. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming to the right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. So the Giants leave one and they trail it here two to one. Back here at Oracle Park, ready now for the fifth inning. Here’s the second baseman, Jake Croninworth. Web back to work in for a strike. 0 and one. Next offering is fouled back right side over to Smith. That takes care of Pronin. Good sinker low in the zone right there and produced exactly what he was looking for. Ball on the ground. Nice ground out. Next for the Padres’s, Freddy Fine. He’s already homerred in this game. And first offering is fouled off. Base is empty. One away. And we’re in the top of the fifth. Outside low. And the count is one and one. Fouled off left side. [Music] One down. Base is empty. Bows it off. Still one and two. That one missed. Not close with that one. Three balls, two strikes. Caught him looking for the K. This guy will throw any pitch in any count. 3-2. He goes off speed, gets the out. Now it’s Fernando Tatiz Jr. He’s already homered here in this one. And that misses. And that is ball one. That one fouled off. Little early on that fast ball. I’m sure the pitcher taking a note. Look for an off speed pitch on this next one. Swing and a miss as he was out front that time. swing and a ball lifted left field. Ramos has this one sized up. Makes the play and it’s out number three. We head to the bottom of the fifth. Now it’s the right fielder Drew Gilbert. Drew Gilbert. First offering and it just misses. And another ball. And a foul ball makes the count two and one. The pitch. Swaging a ball. Hit out towards left center field. He dives, but he can’t make the catch. Here comes the throw. Not going to get him. He’s in there. Wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Next to hit, Elliot Ramos. One for two. And that one upstairs. As a pitcher, you know the runner on second is ready to push things with this speed. A base hit is probably going to be a big run, so you really have to execute on the mound. The one hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. [Music] Hard hit left side onto O’Harn and that’s the first out in the bottom of the fifth. Collie’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. And it’s Raphael Devers in the box. Picked up an RBI in his last at bat. Still their only run of the game so far. [Applause] Drilled to right way back there and that is gone. And the Giants have the lead now. It’s 3-2. He only needed one swing to square it up. Not wasting any time in that at bat. Boo. Aggressive and it paid off. [Applause] When you’re working with this kind of velocity, so critical that you move the ball around, work quickly, and make sure that you keep that hitter off balance. Clearly not fooled by the location or the velocity. He was all over that fast ball. Willie Adamus the next Giant to hit. He is struck out and he is walked. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. This one smoked on its way out of here. [Applause] They do it again. Backto back homers and they tack one on the board. It’s 42. That one just sounded different. And it might have been the loudest moment yet. Man, my ears are ringing. I could feel that swing from the booth. [Applause] As we dive into the numbers with Stackcast, we see that was launched off his bat. wasted no time getting out. Yeah, check out the exit, VO, man. It’s special. 118 mph. And you know that means one of two things. You’re either putting a hole in a fieldielder’s glove or you drove it out for a home run. And good thing for him, it was the ladder. And the Padres’s manager making his way towards the mound as he will make the move. That does it for you, Darvish. And this is one he’d like to forget. Back with a new arm after this. New pitcher now, Nick Petta. And he’s got a big time breaking ball to contend with. Hitters going to have to pick it up early if they’re going to have any chance. Nick Petta, one out. Base is empty. Dom Smith stands in. Fought off foul. [Music] Still only one out here in the inning. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And one and one. And that’s fouled off. That one way inside already three runs across in the frame. Last half of inning number five. gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. He goes down looking. Two outs. Base is empty now. Matt Chapman at the plate. There’s the strike. Just missed. Swings through that one out in front that time. two straight and that one is lifted in the air. Merrill on the move to the alley and that’s the third out. But two round trippers in this inning. The long ball was working. It’s now 42. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Back here in San Francisco, top of the sixth inning. Now the number two hitter Luis Araz. That pitch clips the outside corner and it’s 0 and one. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. Missed with a change up at a count one and two outside on the ground to third. leadoff man retired in the sixth. Well, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. Here’s Manny Machado. That one’s in there. Strike one. Well, he’s been incredibly efficient in this one. First pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up until this point. The Padres’s trailing by two and we’re the top half of the sixth. That misses and the count one and two. That one the other way. Fires over to first. Two quick outs to open the top of the six. Now batting first Ryan O’Harn. Ryan O’Harn comes up to hit. Bowl for two in this one. Giants liner and this could be trouble around first heading for two into second and he’s got a double. Everything came together for him. A lot of hitters tell themselves line drive over the infielder’s head. That’s what I’m trying to do. Just keep that approach simple. And right there it was perfectly executed on time with everything and pulled it into the gap nicely. So runner at second, two down. Jackson Merrill the next up for the Padres’s and that’s pushed foul off to the left and out of play. [Music] man at second. Ripped on a line, snags it on the run and that’ll do it. A double in the inning, but they leave him stranded. 678 do in the bottom of the sixth. It’s the Giants four and the Padres’s two. And welcome back to the ballpark. And now the center fielder, Jung Hu Lee. Jun, that one pushed foul out of play off to the left. I got one ball, one strike. And that’s outside. And it’s two and one. And there’s a ball. [Applause] And that one pulled foul. struck him out looking. Well, just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast ball right there. And I don’t think he was taking it, thinking it might be a cold ball or anything. I just think he was flat out frozen. Did not expect that location in my opinion. This one in the air right field and there’s two away now batting two down base is empty and up next for San Francisco Giants. And first offering is fouled off. Two down, nobody on here in the bottom of the sixth. All right, come on. Swings and misses at the pitch off the plate. Well, you got the hitter already chasing that nasty slider. If you’re on the mound, you just want to expand the zone right now. Get us Ah, he locked him up and that’ll do it. The Giants go down quietly as they can’t add to their 4-2 lead. And we’re back. We go to the top of the seventh. And now the shorts stop. Xander Bogarts. Let’s go. Just missed. And that one wrapped foul. Swing and a line drive. Ripped out into left center field. That’ll touch down for a hit. So, a runner aboard hits in a row for him here. Pitch was in and off the plate. So hard to do anything with a pitch in that location, but somehow he got the barrel to it and hit it well. Pretty amazing. Bob Melvin hands the baseball over. Logan Webb won’t go any further and he really had to grind it out, but he does leave with the lead. new arm of the mound in a moment. So, the Giants with a new pitcher on the hill, number 88. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. So digging in now for San Diego, Gavin Sheets. He’s grounded out a couple of times. That one’s in there. That’s strike one. Now these guys definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. swing and a ball lined out towards center and there’s one away. Now that second base now here’s Jake Croninworth. Definitely wants to stay out of the double play here. Ball on the ground in the infield. Should be an inning ending double play. [Music] Strike one. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Next offering is in for a strike [Applause] and that skips in the dirt. Well, with the amount of pitches that can end up in the dirt, a good secondary lead doesn’t have to get away from the catcher, but if you’re anticipating based off the trajectory, get yourself into scoring position with the tying run at the plate here in the top half of inning number seven. Ground ball left side could be two. There’s one on to Smith. Two. They made it look easy, but it started with a nice feed to the second baseman from the shortstop. Perfect turn, and they’re out of this jam. So, they turn to the lefty in this spot, Yuki Matsui. And he’s been racking up strikeouts at a high rate this year. Typically, at least one in innings, so he’ll be tough to get to. And now the right fielder, Drew Gilbert. You know, this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher. What you tell yourself is, I want to stay square to the plate to try to hit the ball over the shorts stop’s head. And first offering is fouled off. Matsui measures 5′ 8 in, 29 years old, and he was born in Japan. That’s inside. So, a foul ball makes it one and two. And that’s outside. Back up the Oh, that got him. still able to get it there in time. And that’s out number one on a tough play. That comebacker got him down low and you can really see him favoring the leg. That’s his plant leg which might be a concern, Chris. Yeah, you hope he’s got some feeling in that leg so he can land on it like you said. But from the way he’s acting out there, I think it looks like he’s going to be okay and try to continue. Boo. And digging in for San Francisco, Elliot Ramos. One for three. San Francisco and the pitch a little bit low. Ball one. Activity in the bullpen for San Diego. Wandi Peralta, a lefty looks to be getting himself ready. Estrada getting cranked. Foul ball. to the right side and that’s a base hit. Now batting the designated hitter. Here’s Raphael Des. Can’t forget the two-run shot he launched out of here in the fifth. Yeah, one of the biggest swings of the game, Boog, as he looks to make even more of an impact in this at bat right here. and the first pitch misses for ball one. Ramos at first, one gone. [Music] Swing and a miss. Strike one. He’s trying to stay away from this lefty knowing that a lot of left-handers like the ball down and in. [Music] The one [Applause] that one back up the middle and it gets through. Lead runner holds at second base. First and second with one down. Will Adam now at the plate, we just might be talking about this at bat in our postgame rap. He’s proven he can drive in runs in these spots. Runners at first and second with one gone here. The bottom of the seventh. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. in the air on the infield and the infield fly is called. Now batting first base Dominic Smith. Now it’s Dominic Smith 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. There’s the strike. Two aboard, two outs. Climb the ladder with that fast ball. 0 and two now. And a swing and a miss. And that’s that. Giants leave a couple, but they still lead this one four-2. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Ryan Walker. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different, so we’ll see what he’s got here. Next, it’s the catcher for the Padres’s, Freddy Fine. He blasted one out earlier in the third. Just a solo home run, but an important swing of the bat in this game. We’ve already seen him do it once. Can he do it again? There’s the strike. Well, don’t expect too many more high fast balls. This is a good sinker ball pitcher and sometimes they can make mistakes trying to pitch up in the zone. Look for him to stay down around the knees to be effective. got him swinging away. Away away. And clearly that was the plan right there. He just wasn’t able to put it in play. And that should tell you something as a hitter. Sometimes you’re a little too conscious of the inside pitch and you’re not able to cover that outside part of the plate. So clearly some adjustments to be made next time. So with one down, it’ll bring up Fernando Tatis Jr. outside and that’s ball one. The Padres’s down by a pair and we’re in the top of the eighth. Next offering in there for a strike and it’s one and one. One down, base is empty. And now two balls in a strike. swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Pulls it down and there’s two gone. Up next for the Padres’s, the designated hitter, Luis Arise. Two outs, space is empty. Luis Arazz the next up for the Padres’s. Chris, baseball today. so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers, but this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. And first off is fouled off. Two down, nobody on. And that one fouled off. San Francisco. Foul ball still 0 and two. Looking very settled on the mound here in the eighth. One more out. They’ll probably hand it off to their closer for the ninth with at least a two-run lead. Almost got him. [Music] You got this. Swaying at a ball popped in the air and it falls. And with the inning still alive, here comes the heart of the order. Good two strike hitting right there, Boo. A bit of a lost start for some. So that was nicely done to beat the odds. He clearly didn’t catch that one on the big part of the bat. just kind of muscled it out there and you know on the mound it can be pretty frustrating for a pitcher but you just kind of have to expect those to drop in there sometimes. Here comes Manny Machado and Manny gets a piece. and ring him up, says Carl Dixon. That’s a strikeout. One left for San Diego. They trail it here. Four to2. Back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Jeremiah Estrada just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Here’s Matt Chapman outfield deep here trying to prevent anything over their heads. And when you talk about elite defensive third baseman, this guy is at the top of the list. First pitch misses. Stud. When you look at players like this, you play that hot corner. Got to be pretty courageous over there with the way balls come off the bat. That’s the kind of guy that every year you expect him to be in the All-Star game and have a gold glove, if not a platinum glove. Here’s a 20. So, what are the skills you look for that make a really good defensive third baseman that elite? Well, Boo, one of the things I think about immediately are just the feet. Does he have good feet? Is he able to quickly react and when you have good feet, you’ve got soft hands. And soft hand defenders are able to make tough plays look easy. And that one is in the dirt and a full countdown. Battling here as he fouls it away. [Music] Line drive makes the catch for the out. That swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well. I know it didn’t produce a hit, but he made solid contact and that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate. And up next for the Giants, Jung Hu Lee. Ball one. No strikes. Swing and a miss. 98 on the gun. When you throw a fast ball by a guy like that, I imagine it’s got to feel incredible. Look for him to throw it again at some point. And that’s in there at the knees. [Music] Just off the inside corner. Now two and two. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Next offering misses. Three and two now. Worm burner into the outfield for a knock. So a man aboard now with one away. Up next for the Giants, catcher Patrick Bailey will hit next. There’s the strike. Lee leads off first with one away. in here. Check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. And it’s nothing in two. Giants goes down swinging for the strikeout. Couldn’t hit the fast ball at the knees. Just blown away in that at bat. Three fast balls, all strikes. He wasn’t even able to foul one off. There’s not much you can take away from an at bat like that as a hitter other than maybe there’s something wrong with your eyes. He’s got to have better timing on the fast ball next time. CS stands in with two away as he takes a ball. Swings through that one for strike one. He can live up in the zone all game if hitters will chase it. That’s just too much velocity. The hitters got to look down in the zone on the ground to the left and it stays fair. They stop the lead runner at second. Now two on with two outs. There’s something about pulling one down the line and shooting it through the infield that’s just so satisfying as a hitter. It’s just fun turning on a pitch like he did right there. And now Drew Gilbert. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. If you’re the Padres’s, this has to stay a two-run game. In for a strike and it’s on two. Well, this is a higher leverage spot and I love the way that he’s turned things around. He’s got two outs now ahead in this count. And he can pretty much dictate what’s going to happen next in terms of the pitch sequence. Just misses. It’s a ball in two strikes. And now a little barking back towards the umpire. Clearly thought he got that outside corner on what was a pretty big pitch. Sometimes that only makes it worse for you moving forward, but it can also open up that location in the future if the umpire thinks there’s a chance that he missed it. First and second, two down. A healthy cut. Tough pitch at 98, but a really good pass at the ball. Pitch misses there. And now two balls and two strikes. Swaging a miss. The velocity blasted it right past him. Two left on through eight full. It’s the Giants four and the Padres’s two. We’re back and on the mound is the closer Randy Rodriguez. Well, you see the ERA very solid and that doesn’t always tell you the whole story, but he’s been really good so far this year. And here’s the first baseman, Ryan O’Harn. Late swing, fouled to the left. right side, hard hit, tosses to first, one up, one down. That’s a huge defensive play in the late stages of the game. It might not be the most challenging we’ve seen today, but it needed to be made. That’s helping your team. He’s two outs away now. Jackson Merrill sliced hard but fouled down the left side. One down, base is empty. Line drive caught. You put a really good swing on that pitch and hit the ball hard. You know, line drives won’t always find a hole, but the more you can hit the ball like that with good exit vo, the better off you’re going to be in the long run. So, they’re down to their final out. Stepping in for San Diego, Xander Bogarts. There’s the strike. Two down, nobody on here in the top of the ninth. On the ground of first and that goes foul. One strike away. The shorts stop takes a ball. Next pitch is outside. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. And a liner out into right center for a base hit. And that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. That’s tremendous fight from him. Fired up down there. Down to the last strike and he comes up with a hit to keep the game alive. It ain’t over yet. So up next, Gavin Sheets 0 for three in this one. Swinging a foul out of play. Bogarts off of first with two away. fouled off. He was late. Swing and a miss and he got him. Ball game. Well, this was a tightly played game. Got a little of everything. some timely hitting runs on the board, key pitching and defense in certain spots. Definitely a fun one to watch. And your final 42 for Chris Singleton and our entire crew. I’m John Shambi saying so long.
