Go Cowboys. Heat. Hey, heat. Hey, heat. The following is a production of Dallas Cowboys.com and the Dallas Cowboys football club. How about you, Cowboys? Go Cowboys, blowing out of the back field, exploding down the sidelines. This is Hanging with the Boys, presented by Wing Stop, where flavor gets its wings. Now, your hosts, Nate Newton, Kurt Daniels, Jesse Holly, and Shannon Gross. Shannon, looking live at Tostitos Championship Plaza outside Ford Center at the Star in Fris, Texas, where it is hot. It’s 96 degrees. Feels like 105. The high will be 98. The low will be 78. He is Shannon. I am Kurt. We are the scaledown version today as Jesse will be calling in. Nate is off and about. Who knows? Who knows? Got Paul in the back keeping us live together. We are the sports talk equivalent of Braille. People feel us when we speak. Brought to you each and every show by Wingstop where flavor gets its wings. wings. By the way, our uh wings stop contest has concluded. Yeah, that was quick. Very quick. So, we should know the winner shortly. So, we will announce it. Flooded with the I’m sure enough everybody wanted to be on the number one rank or the two people that that Yeah, people people that signed up. But no, thanks to Wingstop for that amazing contest. We will find out who the winner is. Hopefully it is one of you regulars and you get to come hang out with us after the Green Bay game. So, as Kurt said, Jesse is still in Oxnar. This should be our final show with kind of disjointed next week. Disjointed. We’ll be back in the studio together on Monday. Monday’s Yeah, I think we’re still doing every other day. Monday, Wednesday, Friday next week. Yeah. And then uh the season will be here. So, Jesse will call in in a little bit. We have no idea where Nate is. He let us know about an hour before last minute. I’m not here, fellas. Not here. Don’t know where he is. Have a good show. Hopefully all is well. All is well. Hopefully. Um I don’t know about us. How you been? You good? Good. Good. Yeah, it’s been a crazy crazy off season, but uh doing well. Yeah, everybody’s pretty excited. crazy off season personally or Yeah, a lot of lot of uh well, it’s always team-wise, but just a lot of projects this offseason, but it’s been fun. It’s been good. Been busy. So, yeah. So, we touched on we touched on it briefly, I think last show, Jesse was talking about, you know, the the Netflix premiere. Yeah. Yeah. And here in the local media, you know, everyone was analyzing the sound bites from what Jerry said before on the blue carpet, you know, and the the one that stood out was it’s a soap opera 365 days a year, which you listen that’s been a by line in this building for years. Like we as employees, we say that, right? Yeah. And we know a lot more than what the general public knows. So behind the scenes it’s even more like oh really that’s happening like that’s really happening that happened. I mean anytime you work in a building where a helicopter lands on your practice field and you know you never know A-Rod might get off of it. Stephen A. Smith may get off of it. Kevin Cosner may get off of it. You you just never know what’s going to happen. Yeah. Who’s going to walk by? It’s just crazy. Right. And so, but that really in my mind let me know that’s what these contracts in training camp are about. It’s to me like I I think they do it on purpose. They drag them out. I think they do, Kurt. But that seemed to be the other reason. So, I mean, what other reason would there be? This is your like, you know, and Jerry’s still saying, I expect him to play. He’s under contract. he should be playing the first game. But from a football standpoint, if your goal and your purpose is to win football games, you want your football players to be in football shape, the first football game of the football season. Such a distraction. I don’t I don’t get it. And not even the distraction part, but like what Jesse and and Nate harp on. Being physically calloused up, your skin’s hardened. You don’t bruise as easy. you being ready for foot. I mean, there’s there’s in shape and there’s no doubt in my mind, Micah, CD, Zack Martin, all those guys, physically, cardio wise, strengthwise, you were in physical shape, but like you know, the two guys that play professional football that are on this show have always said, there’s a difference between being shape and being in football shape. And you can’t get football shape until you play football. Lamb even admitted it after, you know, last year. So, there’s no other reason like you you I I think they’re going to get a deal done. I don’t think there’s any way they don’t. But, it seems like he’s the tone seems more hardline this year. And you know what? It seems, and maybe it’s just me, maybe because I haven’t been in the building the last two or three years, but it seems to me like with each one of these, it gets a little more. It seemed pretty hardline with with CD. I don’t remember this seems a little more hardline. Yeah, this one seems worse to me. There’s more, you know, Jerry’s like, he’s got a contract. He’s going to be he’s got a contract. I don’t remember him really talking like that with CDN. I could be forgetting, but I don’t know. It It seems different this time. And I don’t I still think they’re going to get signed, right? I mean, they have to. But if they don’t get it signed, do you think Micah plays that first game? Yes, I think he will. I do too. Yeah, that’s just too much money. Too much money. And And plus, like Jesse said, that dude that dude loves loves football. Oh, yeah. And just think as big of a stats guy as he is. Yeah. You miss a game, you’re missing out on career stats. You’re missing out on season stats. You’re you you miss a game, you’re you’re automatically one game behind in the Yeah. the sack king of the league, you know, defensive player of the year, all that. You’re losing ground. So, I don’t think as a person he’s gonna miss. His agent’s probably gonna hate it, but I don’t think there’s any way he misses no a game. No, it just I don’t It’s funny. They asked Jerry yesterday about what’s keeping you from negotiating, and he said nothing. There’s nothing there’s nothing stopping them from negotiating. So, why aren’t you negotiating? You know, it just it doesn’t make sense. I think it’s the drama, man. I think it’s I think it’s the drama and I think it’s you know we’re talking about him everybody on TV they’re you know they’re at the other camps and they’re first that the scroll at the bottom of the screen Michael Parson still not sign you know there he he’s being tal and if think about it if they’re not talking about Micah right now in this off season in this training camp what are they talking about Joe Milton? No. Are they talking about maybe pickings, but like nothing’s really happened there? Like, you know, Dak hasn’t looked great at camp. You know, you’re no one’s really jumping off the page. So, if you’re not talking about Mike, are you even talking about the Cowboys at all right now other than coach Shottenheimer being a new coach, bringing in a new culture, bringing in, you know, like, are you really even talking about the Cowboys? I don’t think so. Not nationally by much. I mean, they’ll always find something. Stephen A. Smith isn’t going to find a reason to talk about the Cowboys, but it’s, you know, this is the driving. You’re the fourth or fifth story right now. You’re the number one story on every national media. That to me, that’s the only that’s the only Have you heard the conspiracy theory that they’re going to announce the signing the day the the documentary drops? I have not like to get the full just the full shebang or whatever, exposure and promotion and everybody’s in a great mood. You know what? I didn’t like Jerry yesterday, but I like him today because he saw Mike. I’ll go watch that tonight. When is that thing When does that thing premiere? Uh, it’s next to Paul, you might know for sure. Is it Tuesday? Next Tuesday. Next Monday or Tuesday? I can’t. Okay. So, next week. Next Tuesday. Tuesday. So, we’ve got a few days to wait. Yeah. Yeah. You going to watch it? I wasn’t until Jesse sold me on it. Yeah. because I was I was I was honestly listening to all you know local every every show was talking about it and I was like I know a hundred more stories than what are going to be in there and I know you know I know all this I’ve seen it I I’ve I’ve heard about it I know what’s in there and then when Jesse said just the cinematography and the way they put it together yeah I’m sure it’ll be beautiful I’m like all right you know what I’ll I’ll do it I’ll go watch it I’ll go watch it so speaking of Jesse Jesse he is on on the phone live from Oxnard, California, Jesse Holly. Hey, welcome to the show. What’s going on, man? What’s going on? What up? What up? How’s it going out there? Give us the vibe. What’s the weather like? Is is Dak gonna Is is Dak just is Is it a good thing or a bad thing that his last pass out there was a pick six, a long pick six? No, you know, that’s just the leader that Dak is, right? He’s like, “Man, let me make sure Sam Williams in this training camp feeling good about himself and that he can show the rest of the world that he got some speed. So, I’m just going to throw it right to him on the goal line and sprint 99 yards the other way.” So, that’s what I’m talking about. That’s leadership right there. You know, you don’t talk about leadership, man. You just show it. You go out there, you just throw a pick six so that everybody can see that Sam Williams is back and that he’s ready to take over in the absence, you know, if Michael Park doesn’t come back. So, yeah. So, talk about that’s great leadership in my eyes. Sharing the love, sacrificing, huh? sacrificing for the greater good. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Of course. I mean, like it’s not like Dak didn’t throw a hundred, you know, training camp touchdowns that, you know, nobody wants to say, “Oh, well, he’s the greatest thrower since John Elway.” No, but the one six he throws, they’re like, “Oh, see that’s it right here. We’re in mid-season form.” No, he’s just being a great teammate to lead, man. Let him leave the camp with a little bit of confidence. So, let me ask you this. If you’re Dak, do you do you say, “Uh-uh. One more. One get line back up. I’m not going home like that. Give one more rep. Would you would you do that or you just ride off and be like, “Ah, it stinks. What’s going on?” I feel I I come from I come from the I come from the Asian group and I you know I was raised by Coach Roy Williams and we couldn’t leave the gym on a miss shot. You don’t leave the court on a miss shot. So I get you if I’m like that I’m like, “Hey, run another one. Let’s do another one.” You know, let me let me let me get this off my ledger right here. Yeah. Let me get out of here with a layup. I feel like I feel like that’s a Tom Brady move. Uh-uh. Uh-uh. Get back out here. Run it again. Run it again. For sure. For sure. Well, what’s going on, man? What is there anything different? Backing up, aren’t they? Yeah. Is anything different today than it was Tuesday, or did you get to see enough? I know you kind of came in on the on the tail end of stuff. No, you know what? I saw the best practice they had in all training camp. I saw the most Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yesterday’s practice um you know, yesterday’s practice really got after it. It was one of the most physical practices um that I’ve seen or heard of. Many people confirm that. Uh also, you know, uh I sat down, I should say I, you sat down, myself and my crew at DLLs, we sat down and had an interview with Koshotti. Oh, very nice. You get some give us some give us some insight. I held Koshi’s feet to the fire. Oh yeah. I don’t just I don’t just say stuff on here, recruit stuff on here, and then when I see the man to his face, you tell him he had a month and a year and a half. I didn’t tell him that part. Tell him that part. Left that part out. We had we But but no, I I said to him, I said, you know, coach, um you know, you’ve been talking about this being a, you know, physical brand that you want to that you want to build here and things like that. We’re not I’m not seeing it. I’m not your words and your actions aren’t matching. you know, help me understand wow things that you’re saying to what I’m actually seeing on the field with the preseason game and the practices and things of that nature. And you know, you can go and check that out on uh on my Twitter and on DLS. Uh and he gave he gave an answer. He gave it he not only did he give an answer, but he gave me, you know what, that’s a really good question. Now, I don’t know if he was pandering a little bit to me, but he said I had two really good questions that I asked him. So, you know, that was a theme of the week for me, asking all these great questions. But yeah, you got a chance to sit down with Coach Shotti and and you know, for me it was, you know, again, you guys know me, right? Like I’m I’m not the guy that’s just going to just say anything crazy for shock value. And you also know I’m not afraid that if I have to face the man man to man that I’m okay with saying to his face. I’ve always believed that. Like I’m not going to be the guy that tweets stuff and says stuff and then if I have to see the man tuck my tail. So, it was it was a really good mature conversation that uh that we had with coach Sadi and gave answers that people really loved. Uh but you know, I I had to I that’s what I what I brought for him. All right. Well, it’s but sound like yesterday they were pretty physical. Yeah. You know what? They were they were and I asked him about it because they even he even threw uh he threw Maris Bell uh he threw Maris Bell out for a couple of plays because uh there was a pass play to it was a reverse to Mingo and Mingo kind of got up the field and Mingo kind of dipped his shoulder a little bit and Maris Bell laid the boom on him, knocked him uh knocked him off uh knocked him off his feet and into the into the sidelines. And so, um, coach was like, you know, he said he said, “I want my guys to go to the ed. I just don’t want them to go over it, but I want to make sure that we’re keeping guys up, uh, off the ground.” And so, but yesterday was one of the most physical practices that they had. And I’m hoping I’m hoping in preparation because they’re getting ready to play the Baltimore Ravens and you know, uh, the Baltimore Ravens, that is their, uh, that is their style. And I mentioned this earlier today on my show. And I said to them, to the guys, I said, “There’s a difference between a culture and a way, right? The good teams, you hear the Patriot way. You hear the Raven way, right? And the Cowboys are trying to build a culture. It’s not a way. It’s not a way of life. It’s not a way of living. It’s not a way that they go about things. They’re trying to build that. But if you know the Baltimore Ravens, the Baltimore way is a physical physical brand of smash mouth football. So, I hope the guys are getting revved up because they they got a big match up this Saturday against the Baltimore Ravens. You don’t want to go two weeks in a row, you know, getting the lunch money taken. So, what what’s their schedule like? They’re packing up now or when do they fly back? Tonight. So, they had their final walk through uh this morning, you know, uh after yesterday’s practice. You should have seen the trucks. The trucks were getting loaded up. Guys, equipment was getting thrown in. They they shut the servers off and the Wi-Fi was getting getting low. They was they were ready to get up out of there. Uh they had a glorified walk through um this morning and uh and after that these guys are getting on the getting on the getting on the plane and coming on back home. Yeah, I think the by the time our show is over, they’ll be pretty much buses will be pulling out. So sure. Yeah, they’re ready to go. Another another one down at Oxnard, huh? Yeah, man. What are you doing the rest of the day, Jesse? Yeah, I’m actually in a shuttle right now headed to the uh to the terminal. I’m going home, too. Oh, you’re going home, too? Oh, nice. Very nice. You’re on the bus. You’re on a bus? Yeah. Yeah. She She’s whipping this thing, blowing a horn, whipping it. She getting to the gate. What? Um, so what made it physical? What makes a what makes a practice physical? I guess the hitting. the guy’s willing to want to make contact, not just studing up, to stud up like, you know, you see a lot of times guys will run by and just tap your hips or, you know, run by and be like, “Oo, I got you.” No, these guys were meeting guys in the hole. The guys were, you know, dropping their shoulders, banging. Um, you know, the noise started talking, the chatter started talking. Even Maris Bell when he when he uh when he laid the hit on Mingo, you know, the chatter was going back and forth and the offensive defenses chirping at each other. And then you know um my kids Bell yell to the office you know y’all wasn’t seeing that that that poo poo when the Rams was whipping y’all ass. I’m like yeah I like that. I’m like I’m like yeah I like that. And so you know that just got everything revved up. And again you know guys were you know coach always talks about hey I want my guys playing with um with lower pad level. And what he means by that is you see a lot of these guys vertical upright posture right? You can’t play football upright. this game is always played um this game is always played in a in a ready position. And so, you know, he wanted his guys to get lower and play in a in a in a much more uh ready stance. And so, yesterday, you saw that. You saw those guys playing with lower pad level. You saw those guys willing and ready to um to initiate the contact and and be physical with one another because that’s the only way that you get to that way, right? like not the culture but the way that this team is going to become a physical football team and it’s going to be the way the standard then they got to do it in practice. It starts in practice. It starts with each other and we we we build that callous then and then now we take it to the field. So uh yesterday was one of those days where they really put together. That’s good to hear. How do you So you said that Maris Bell got kind of kicked out of practice for a couple of plays. not not kicked out of practice, but he got he was in the starting group and they kicked him off the field for a couple plays and then they let him back in. Yeah. Mingo pretty good. You go from, you know, two hand touch and just kind of hitting, you know, light light, you know, little smack on the shoulder pads to actually having a physical practice. And you know how it is, Jesse, if you’re physical and the other guy’s not physical, somebody’s somebody’s either getting hurt or pissed off. Do you do you do the coaches go around before a practice like that and be like, “Hey, I want you guys I got I want you guys to get your pad level low and I want y’all to I want you to hit and and run through some tackles. Stay off the ground.” Or do you just does it just develop and happen like that? You know, when you put pads on, it is an unspoken spoken rule. When it is a full padded day, you know what that means? If it’s just helmets and shoulder pads or it’s just helmets and shells, then you’re kind of like, okay, you know, well, but when when you put full pads on, it is it is it is no it’s go time. What is full pads these days? Cuz nobody wears thigh pads anymore or like what is a full pad to aren’t they? Yeah, full pads is is when you put the pants on. Like, you know, some guys will just be out there in shorts or, you know, when you put the pads on, when you put the helmets and the shoulder pads and, you know, your your supposed thigh pads or whatever it is. Nobody wear these pads anymore. Um, but yeah, so that’s that’s okay. That’s full pad. I got you. All right. Hey, Jess, let us take our first break. Are you able to hang out? Back to Hanging with the Boys. Welcome back to the second segment of Hanging with the Boys, brought to you each and every show by blockchain.com. Thank you, blockchain.com. Kurt Daniels in studio with me, Shannon Gross. Nate Newton is parts unknown today. We have no idea. And Jesse Holly is making his way through the airport terminal at LAX. What’s he got? Yeah, we’re rolling. He’s back. He may he may have to put the phone down to go through the uh the scanner there in in uh what is it? The uh what do you call airport security? TSA. TSA. There we go. I couldn’t I don’t know why that failed me. I was want to say TABC and I was like that’s not it. That’s not it. So Oh. So Jesse, what what was your overall your your trip out there? What was the vibe? You know, Nate was out there, he gave us his thoughts. What being around some of the guys, talking to some of the coaches, what’s your what’s your feeling on the season going into what what what do you feel is different this year than than it was last year? Um, honestly, there’s still a lot of questions, Matt. Yeah, there’s still a ton of questions that need to be answered for this football team. Um, they’re going to continue to evaluate guys in training camp. They’re going to continue to evaluate guys in these preseason games, but it’s still a lot of questions. There’s still we still don’t know uh about the secondary. Yeah, we still don’t know about can this defensive line stop anybody. Um, you know, we have a good feeling about what we have at receiver, but we don’t know what this running game is going to be. We don’t know what this offensive line going to be. There’s still so many questions that need to be answered that haven’t been answered. And I think, you know, they’re still trying to figure that out. Uh I think we’re going to see a different approach from coach Shotti uh this next game. He The thing about coach Senheimer is he’s an honest man. I like to believe that he’s an honest man somewhat. Um but he’s also very a self-aware man and he hears the talk. So he hears the the chatter about what happened in that preseason game um and how they came out with six straight passes and you know how you’re not running the football like you want to. So you know how guys didn’t play the last game. So I think you’re going to see a different um I know for a fact you’re going to see guys way more guys play in this football game than you did the last preseason games. Um but again the answers to the questions that we had in January, in February, in March, in April, in May, in June still are there in in mid August. They don’t know. They they they cannot give you a definitive answer of what is going to be on the offensive line. They’re still, you know, Mazi comes out, he makes his statement like, you know, I got to be we all know you got to be better, bro. You know, we know. We all know. We hang out three years. So they don’t have an answer up front. say quarterbackwise with the injuries and stuff like that, you know, they’re trying to hope some of these guys come along, but right now they don’t have an answer. They they they’re hoping Kaylee Elim works out and Deon Bland works out, but they don’t know we’re going to play the slot. They’ve worked out, you know, not not worked out guys, but they’ve tried different guys in the slot in practice, in the games. So again, the questions that we have linebacker, the questions are there and they have not gotten a definitive answer after three, four weeks of training camp here in Osnar. Yeah, that’s what I I mean there’s three weeks the opener’s three weeks from the day and especially to me secondary and and defensive tackle are just two glaring glaring question marks and I don’t know how do they how do they fix this? How do they solve those questions? get the answers in three weeks if they haven’t been able haven’t been able to do it in six months or whatever. Yeah, I think they continue I think they continue to evaluate these guys, try to put together a plan for these guys. But make no mistake about it, you know, Will Mccclelay’s uh you know, Jerry talked about, you know, football being a 365 uh day 365 day a year thing. That goes for Will Mccclelay too. So ba bd dollar will mlay he’s looking um at different teams and seeing who has availability some players that they may have had their eyes on on other teams because when we get to that point of roster cuts being need to be made and guys you know that that you have that window of of of open kind of haywireess of of of guys being released from the roster. They want to be front and center to pick some guys up. I said the other day, even when it comes to backup quarterback, we might not even have a backup quarterback on this football team on this roster. You know what I’m saying? Like I honestly because right now Joe Milton, he he is not ready to be your backup quarterback. If you had to if for whatever reason there was a game Saturday and it was a regular season game and Dak Prescott happened to be kidnapped um by Martian, Will Gre is your backup quarterback. I’m telling you like Will Gri is your backup quarterback. So, I don’t know if they’re willing and ready to go into this season with their backup quarterback being Joe Milton and Will Greer. I’m just that’s just my my hunch. This is no inside information. No one talked to me. I didn’t talk to anybody. I’m just looking at that and saying you cannot feel comfortable about what you have at backup quarterback currently today and the season is that close that that you know close um from being here. Uh but you know remember you still have that you know most teams carry that emergency quarterback and try to get a guy to the practice squad and so on and so forth. So if they want to if they want to keep Joe Milton because they don’t want him to go to uh you know another team and you can keep him. Will Greer ain’t going nowhere. So if you want to kind of get him back through the practice squad or whatever it is or you know have him be the fourth quarterback whatever it may be. Um I think they’ll also be on the lookout for a veteran quarterback if there’s one available if there’s one worthy enough to be available. I’m not saying that they’re like searching for one, but like if one comes about like, you know what, like if Cooper Rush, for example, gets released. I don’t think he’s going to get released. I know he has a contract in Baltimore, but like someone of that kind of style, of that caliber, that of that, you know, those type of years in, I can see that be a guy they say, you know what, come on over so we can feel a little bit better about our backup quarterback situation. And that’s why you’re seeing, you’re not seeing Will Greer and you’re seeing Joe Milton this weekend, right? Is because they know what they’ve got. Shotty said, “We know what we got in Will Greer, right?” So, you know what you got there, but do they know? Right. That’s my question is is would you rather see I think you know what you got in Joe Milton too, right? Like not not ready to be a backup. Which one would you rather see get reps this weekend? I get why he’s doing it. I do. I get why he’s saying like we have a better understanding of what Will Greer is, right? We know. We have film on Will Gre. We He’s been around the block a little while, so we know a little bit about what he is. We’re still trying to figure this whole thing out about, you know, is Joe Milton just a live arm? Is there something there? So, I get the evaluation. It’s more so trying to figure out or the layers that you have to figure out with uh with Milton than it is trying to figure out what you have in Greer. So, I I think that’s the biggest thing, but I they don’t know about either one of these guys. What they’re really doing is they’re praying to whatever god they believe in. Okay? Whatever shrine that they pray to that that press guy stays healthy because if these are the two guys that you have to go into this season at least at least what we know with Cooper Rush, we can get a couple games in there. I I don’t know. I don’t know if that’s a real life thing with the guys that you have backing up that Prescott right now. And is that why you’re not seeing Dak at all this preseason is because you’re just saying if something freakish were to happen like you start off the season going we’re done. Yeah. Yeah. I mean that’s you know would you play would you play him at all just to kind of shake the rust off? Put him in there for a series just to get some timing. You guys know where I stand on that. I’m I’m old school. I think he should play, right? But I I’m not I’m not ignorant to the fact that I know that Jerry Jones is like, “Yeah, I I can’t afford both on the field record-wise and monetarily with us having these many prime time games of not having number four out there. I’m not trying to pay this dude $60 million to be sitting in the stands to be, you know, um a guy just viewing the game.” So, I I I understand it all. Um, but I I just I don’t know, man. We’re we’re we’re we play this game of football. And I say we, not us, but them. Um, this game of football, but we’re doing more and more to have players stop playing the game. Like, I I don’t understand it. Less practices, less tags, they don’t want to play in the preseason. It’s just a lot of stuff and fluff. And like you in order to be good at football, you you have to play football. That’s just what it is. All right, let’s take our second break. Jess, you good or you want to? No, I’m good. You got to bounce. I’m getting close to security. So, what happens is I’ll tell you and I’ll put you on mute till I get through the gate and I’ll jump back on. All right. Well, we’ll take our first break. Maybe that’ll happen while we’re on break. If not, we’ll deal with it when it happens. You are you in the line right now? Are you in the I’m in the line. That’s how you do it right there, Kurt. It’s that easy. Just go there. You go to start playing. After you make a purchase, you hit start game and then you scratch those off and it tells you if you win $5,000, which most likely you won’t because there’s only one winner per day, but hey, it’s fun to play anyway. So, you bet. All right, Jess, what else you want to tell us on your uh way out of Ouxard? Any other ins? Okay, before you tell us what you want, Mazy said you got to do something. Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on. You guys talk cuz I’m going I’m about to go through I’m about to go through the deal. will talk and then when I get through this two minutes I’m going jump back on. That works. That works. We’ll get to the We’ll get to the Mazy thing in a minute. What do you I’m feeling sorry for Mazy. Can I say that? That’s what I want to ask Jesse about. What at what point does it click? You know, I’ve always wondered this. If you’re We’re all decent looking guys. Me, you, Nate, Jesse. Hope so. Some of us, some of us uh pocketbooks are more attractive than others, which makes your you’re go up a couple of uh numbers or half numbers on the scale, right? Zero, you know, at some point you got to realize how ugly you are, right? And it’s and then you realize like, okay, this is the level that I’m going to get the rest of my life. And you kind of you kind of relegate yourself to like, okay, this is it. If if I’m going to procreate, I got to play swim in this pool over here. I can’t go swim in the What is it? In the day club pool, box your weight, whatever. Yeah. Yeah. I wonder with athletes, and we’ll ask Jesse when you come back, like how mentally tough is it when you get drafted as a firstrounder and you realize like you just aren’t that good cuz you’ve been the man your whole life and then you even get drafted and then you just the talent doesn’t equal the expectation. How mentally tough that is. It’s got to be hard. It’s got to got to be tough. We’ll ask him when he gets back. I just feel like I mean he said that he’s had three defensive coordinators in three years and he said that wasn’t really a problem but I got to think you know one asked him to lose weight one asked him to gain weight now he’s back to losing weight I mean it’s just but Kurt if you can play you can play that’s true that’s true like if if like Tyrone Crawford they had him going up and down and inside and outside and like you know he he you could play football you can play football you know that’s true that’s true you may have to adapt a little bit but like if if you can play you can play, right? Yeah. Like if you can catch, you can catch. Like you may not understand the routes. You may not run them the right way, but if you can catch, you can catch and you can figure all the other stuff out. So, what are you looking for? Are you even going to watch the game this weekend? Yeah. Well, I have to do some writing during the game, so I’ll watch it. Um, yeah. I mean, there’s a lot. I do hope some of the starters play. I’d like to see them get some reps in to kind of just like you said, shake the rust off some in live action. I’m back. He made it through. He’s not in a holding. He’s not in cuffs. We got a question for you. Mazy Mazy said you got to go do something. I’m a first round pick. And then he also said, you know, he’s had multiple defensive coordinators since he’s been here. He said that wasn’t the problem. And Kurt and I were just talking about, you know, if you can play, you can play. How how disheartening is it for a player when you’ve been the man at every step of your career and you get drafted expected to be the man in the first round and then you have to come to the realization like I’m just not good enough to be where I need to be. Like how mentally tough and disrupting to your life is that that that you just hit this brick wall and all of a sudden you’re just not good enough no matter what you do. Yeah. I think it for him for anybody it has to be a bit frustrating because again you believe in yourself and you believe in the talent that you have and then you know what happens is you get to this league and you realize you are the best player on a team. these are the best players in the world on from every team and and that’s just you know something that you have to deal with and and for Mazi he just hasn’t figured out a way to take that next step to you know to be able to go from the best player on Michigan’s defense to being the best player or one of the best players in the National Football League. And I’m sure it eats away at him. Maybe it doesn’t. I don’t know. But, you know, you would like to see you you would you would like to see it bother him in such a way that he’s like really showing in, putting the work in to show improvement. That’s the biggest thing is like if it frustrates you enough, put the work in and improve. It just doesn’t feel like you putting the necessary work in to improve. You sell me all the service you want, but So, you don’t think it’s just a talent problem. It’s a It’s a work work ethic problem, too. Maybe, you know, I think it’s a I think it’s a Yeah. Listen, you don’t He’s in this league. He was a first round pick. Yeah. You know what I’m saying? Like, that’s a hard hard way to miss. So, I think there are some things that he has there talented. I think he I just don’t think he puts in all the necessary work to make himself better. I just I just don’t I just don’t feel like he looks at the game in that type of way where he’s willing and wants to put in all the work to be better. What will you be watching or who who or what will you be watching this weekend offensively and defensively? Any specific players? Any specific schemes? I’ll be I I’ll be in my Nate Newton mode. I’m watching your right guard, Tyler Booker, who who coach Seanheimer said uh will be playing this weekend. And I’m I’m hoping and praying for that Nate Thomas who who had 10 snaps last week and pray was decent was was decent uh in his 10 snaps that he had last week that he plays upwards of 25 30 40 snaps this week and see if uh you know he can’t continue to to work himself through uh you know the evaluation process at that left tackle position. So definitely looking at those guys up front. I do not I mean Joe Milton is Joe Milton, right? Like he is Joe Milton is is the he’s an experienced. Is he going to do something good? I’m sure he will. I’m sure he will. Is he going to overthrow somebody by a country mile? Bet your house. You know what I’m saying? Like is he going to break somebody’s fingers on a five five yard out route? Probably. He he’s he’s a Raldis Chapman eight yards away with a 106 mph fast, right? Like that’s that’s what they’re getting with him. I I did see them working a lot more with him in practice this this week with, hey, take the profit, take the check down, take the pass right in front of you, but Joe’s and this is the thing what I try to tell people because people there’s two things people try to tell me. Well, what if he does what if he does something in the next two games? And I go, “Does that erase like does add if he does something good in the next two games, does that erase what he hasn’t done in the last six months?” For me, it doesn’t, right? For me, it doesn’t. Um, but also the thing with Joe is while they’re trying to get Joe to understand the totality of what it is to be an NFL quarterback. You have to break years and years and years and years of Joe being able to just, oh, I have the strongest arm in the park. He had the strongest arm in little league, high school, and college. Yeah. So we always thought that I I don’t have to be on time because my arm can get it there. I don’t always have to be, you know, have the anticipatory ability because my arm will get it there. And and what you’re realizing now is at this league that type of stuff doesn’t fly. You got to have the anticipatory stuff that goes along with it. Can you learn that? You know, the touch, the the you know, we know he can throw it hard, but can he throw it in there? You know, we saw him overshoot guys. Can that be taught that? Can he learn that or is that kind of a Yeah. Okay. Yeah. It’s it’s going to take it here’s what he’s faced with. It will take time, but this clock is ever changing. It’s never not moving. So, is someone willing to put in two, three years of offseason work, training camp, season work, offseason work, training camp, season work for him to finally get to that point. If this was the 1990s, early 2000s with quarterbacks set, you know what I’m saying, for two and three years before they were expected to go out there and play, then sure, you may have something special on your hands. Problem is, we don’t live in that damn time now, right? You have to be able to come and show and prove right away, you know? Yeah. Right away. Or they move on. They move on to the next Joe Milton and they move on to the next whoever. So, um, it can be taught. I I don’t know. I don’t know what his timeline is from the Cowboys perspective. Are they willing to put another two or three years into a quarterback like they did uh with with Trey Lanton and really wait it out and see if it all works out for them. So, time will tell as as as our friend the great Mickey Sagnola would say. We’ll find out. Bang. Jess, before we let you go, one thing that I can’t I can’t believe we haven’t talked about this more. Maybe just because it’s it’s not worth talking about on this show the entire training camp. I don’t think we’ve really mentioned this position. Maybe just very briefly. Where are we at with wide receiver? I know we know who one and two is. Where are we at with three through six or however many we’re going to carry? What do you What’s your take on that, Jess? I don’t know where people and and this is this is the internet for you. I don’t This is a This is the internet showing itself. I don’t know. It’s crazy because there’s this notion that somehow somewhere that Jaylen Tober isn’t your number three wide receiver. I I don’t know who I don’t know who who believes that. I don’t know who said that. I don’t know why this is even a thing. Jaylen Tobert is your number three wide receiver. Book it. Stamp it. Put your house on it. Unless he gets hurt between now and September 4th. If they come out in 11 personnel, it will be CD Lamb, George Pickkins, and number one, Jaylen Tobert. I’m sorry. I know that Florida is making plays and they they want to talk about holding and all that other kind of great stuff. Cool. Kudos to those guys. And and I say Tobbert because I think um I think uh Turpin, he’s in the rotation, but he is package specific, if that makes sense. Like he’s not your number three, but he’s he’s going to play some running back. He’s going to do some package things. He’ll be there sometime if he if be a third wide receiver is something that they want to do specifically with him on that particular play. But David Cobert is your wide receiver number three. He was that at the end of the season, he was that during the draft. He was that after the draft, he was that in OTA. He was that in mini camp. He was that start training camp. And unless he gets injured and it’s end of the season injury between now and September 4th, Taylor Cobra is your number three wide receiver. Okay, that is that is Stones. They love him. He plays special teams. He is Dak friendly. Like I don’t know where this notion came from that of these other guys are like on his heels and Mingo and all. They’re not. Yeah. Mingo’s name a couple times. Well, who who’s who’s five and six then? Uh I guess you could put um you say Turpin is like 3B or four, whatever. However you want to put that in there. Mhm. Uh Dennis Dennis Mingo, then it’ll probably be Sloan Roy. Okay. If they keep six, don’t know if they’re going to keep six, they may go with five because they may carry more backs. You know how the numbers go. Yeah. But right now, I can tell you if CD Lamb is yours picking, it’s Jaylen Tober, it is um it is Cavante Turpin, and it’s Don Mingo. Those are your five. Yeah. gonna be and don’t and don’t get me wrong, Tan Hosen has had some good players during trainer camp. He he’s not ready to go out there and be your every down number third number three wide receiver. He needs some more time. There’s some other guys that need more time, but he’s he’s a he’s a he’s a every training camp, every team has they have this one good receiver who’s really going to shine. That’s that’s Tan Holden. Every team has him. Every team has a Tan Holden. Every single team has a Tan Holden. Now, that’s not a knock on him. He’s just not ready to step into that role. Yeah. Going to be interesting with the numbers with Turpin being that special that special team special package guy and then not really having a standout running back. You know, your tight ends, you you need some depth there and don’t really have anybody that’s stepping up behind Ferguson. So, be interesting final cuts to see where they keep the the extra the extra guys. So, Jesse, good luck on your flight, man. It’ll be good to have everybody back in studio next week. Watch the game good for us cuz I’m probably not going to watch it this weekend. If I do, I’ll just watch the offensive and def might be the only game I’ve ever just strictly not even taken my eyes off the offense and defensive line. Yeah, just don’t even watch the quarterback, receiver, secondary. I’m good. Just let me see what I what we got on the offensive line. So, all right, man. Have a safe trip. We’ll see you uh next week. We out. Oh, wait. We Kurt, good seeing you. Yeah, Jess, good seeing you. Paul, thanks for keeping us on the air. This has been another episode of Hanging with the Boys. We out. There we go.
