Atlanta Falcons Just Got The News That EVERYONE Wanted To Hear

All right, the Atlanta Falcons, we got a good report coming. They had joint practice with the Tennessee Titans, and we got to hear exactly what every Falcons fan wants to hear. Now, to be fair, not a Falcons fan, right? Detroit Lions fan over here. We have another channel, Sports Talk Detroit. But we started this one, Sports Talk Extra, because we wanted to talk about those teams that the national media kind of ignores and the stories that they don’t talk about. So, we wanted to deliver content on other teams that we felt are kind of like the Lions honestly used to be and will be again if they don’t stay in their winning ways. That’s the way the NFL works. But we can give you a non-biased view of what your team is doing. And nothing has been more polarizing than watching what has happened with the Atlanta Falcons, their quarterback situation, and just the overall like what kind of team do we have here uh in Atlanta? What kind of team are we looking at? Are we looking at a team that is going to be challenging uh for the playoffs? Do we have a team that could win it all? Do you have a team that is going to win the division? I mean, like I think a lot of people pencil the Atlanta Falcons in to win the division and we forget how good Tampa Bay is and at least I do from the outside looking in. or a lot of people just assume Tampa Bay is going to win it without realizing how much Atlanta has improved. And what I love about this is that your teams hate each other. And so I think that’s fun, too. But um you got to see everything you wanted to see. Michael Pennix Jr. is not going to play in your team’s second preseason game on Friday. Uh Raheem Morris said as much. That’s fine. But from the looks of Tuesday’s practice session, uh, he don’t need to he doesn’t need to be there. He doesn’t need the extra work. All right, here’s his numbers. um in the first two joint practices um against the Titans. He finished 13 of 17 with a 52 capping it off with a 52-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver uh Casey Washington on 11 on 111 work against the Titans first team defense. He was also four or five with a long uh touchdown to running back Bejian Robinson on a wheel route with seven on seven work. That’s one thing that I wanted to see from Penn. Can he have a higher completion percentage? I thought he looked good in the last few games of the regular season last year, but I wanted to see him um connecting on a higher percentage of his passes. I thought that was a big deal. Um there was no tackling of the quarterback. The practice was fully padded, but they had, you know, uh the red jersey on um even though with the Falcons, that’s kind of unique, but they had the red jerseys on the quarterbacks. So, he wasn’t getting hit, but there were live bullets flying out there. So, even though he wouldn’t get hit, you still have the same feel and all that kind of stuff. You still have to get rid of the ball cuz you know, all you have to do is get touched and you’re sacked. So, some of the mobility, some of those types of things moving in the pocket don’t even help when you can’t get touched. You need to be even more efficient. You need to be even more mobile. Um, the offense looked good. Um, the running back’s coach said, “I thought there was some good stuff from the offense.” We’ll watch the film. There’s some things we need to clean up. Um, but there’s some good physicality. Guys were finishing runs and passes and we did a decent job of protecting the quarterback. So, it’s not all in all like everything’s great. All right. Now, here’s what I found to be the most interesting if I can be honest. And it came from Raheem Morris. And he spoke I I’ll let you see this. Morris spoke to the media before Tuesday’s practice. He was asked about his philosophy of holding out as starting quarterback as compared to the Bengals who played Joe Burrow briefly in their preseason opener. First off, I’m going to get to the quote here in a second. I love when reporters ask dumb questions. Like, let’s just take a random team and let’s take one of the only teams. There might have been four or five teams that played their starting quarterback in the preseason. And let’s just ask our coach why he’s doing what almost everybody else is doing and not playing their starting quarterback while while one team decided to play their starting quarterback. Also, you’re at a joint practice. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen two teams compete in joint practices and then play their starters in the preseason game against that team. Like that’s not the way it works because coaches love to have controlled environments of physicality for their teams. They love being able to put their teams through special drills, whether it’s red zone work, whether it’s uh situational football, fourth quarter, minute 13 seconds left, you have the ball on your own 30 with the timeout. Like they love being able to set the situation for their team rather than a preseason game which you don’t know what’s going to happen. Now, part of the you don’t know what’s going to happen is good. That’s good. But you can prepare for almost every situation, too. And you can do it in a safer environment when you’re at a joint practice. But Raheem Morris came out and gave such a good answer. All right. He gave every He Oh, man. I love the spiciness in this answer. He said, “Every team is different and every year is different.” Morris said, “The Bengals changed this year because they had a couple of slow starts to the season, which they did. It kept them out of the playoffs last year.” He goes, “We didn’t start slow, so that won’t be a philosophy for us. These things change. There’s nothing written in stone.” Okay, that’s fantastic. He’s basically like, “Look, we don’t have their problem.” And and yes, the Bengals have been traditionally a better team because with Joe Burrow and all of that kind of stuff, while the Falcons have struggled to find their starting quarterback, but Raheem Morris is like, we didn’t have a problem with a slow start. We don’t need to put our starting quarterback out there. He’ll be fine. And by the way, he looks sharp already. Uh, by the way, in case anyone is wondering, Kirk Cousins went 15 of 19 with the second team. Um, he won’t play Friday either, they’re saying. Very likely. Kirk Cousins struggled last year. I don’t know exactly what happened. I don’t know if you’re going to trade him. I don’t know. It’s feeling less likely. you. I promise you if Kirk Cousins has the opportunity to play again this year, which every Falcons fan is hoping that he doesn’t because that means that Michael Penn is healthy, means that Michael Pennix is playing well and giving no reason for Kirk Cousins to play. But if he does, you have arguably the best backup quarterback in the NFL right now. Now, he better be because he’s making $40 million. So, he better be the best backup quarterback in the NFL. but he is. And the fact that you have a team that many people everybody’s picking the Bucks or the Falcons to win the South. I don’t I don’t think I’ve seen anybody, right, outside of people who are trying to get clicks pick the Saints or the the Panthers. Some people trying to get clicks are saying, “Oh, yeah, maybe the Panthers could win it because Yeah. And and you know what? The Panthers will be better this year. uh Bryce Young will be better. Um the Saints have no shot and so it’s it’s a two team race and a third team has the ability to be like, “Hey, I’m here.” There’s a like how cool is it that you are paying 40 million to a backup quarterback and you still have a team that has been put together that can compete for a division and should and many expect to win that said division. I think that’s pretty cool. So, let’s just take that with uh a grain of salt or for whatever it’s worth and realize like there’s a lot of talent here. Next year, um you can let Kirk Cousins go. I think then it’s ends up being like 20 million dead cap hit, something like that. I I don’t have it right in front of me. And you will be able to do even more. And then in fourth year of PennX and fifth year, that’s when you’re really going to have the savings in a team that could be just all out fantastic. All right, thanks for watching.
