We’ll start off with the quarterback battle. We’ll take a look at how running backs need to stand out. And of course, take a look at Mason Typton as well, who’s already begun to seal his spot on the roster, but of course, we’re going to start everything with where it matters most, the quarterback competition, which again could be settled in a preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. We’ve seen this movie before. We got all that and a few other positions coming up for you on today’s episode. So, make sure you stick around with us. We appreciate you very much. The New Orleans Saints quarterback battle for the second time in recent memory could come to an end based on the performance of these quarterbacks going up against the Jacksonville Jaguars in a preseason game. It won’t take much for you to remember going back to Shawn Payton’s last year, that 2021 season. Drew Brees had just called it quits. Gave that final look back in the Superdome, the empty unfortunately Superdome at that point during that co year. And there was that big quarterback battle going on between Jameus Winston as well as Taesm Hill. And we knew that Jameus Winston was going to be the starting quarterback going into that season. But the Saints held this quarterback competition. And it was a Jameus Winston deep ball down the left sideline of Marquez Callaway up against the Jacksonville Jaguars that effectively sealed the deal and made it so that it was well known across the NFL, across the beat, across the NFL fandom that Jameus Winston would be the starting quarterback for the New Orleans Saints. He would then go on, by the way, to start that season five of two until an unfortunate injury ended that year. And now the Saints could see their quarterback battle also settled up against the Jacksonville Jaguars in a preseason game. Even if the Saints won’t say it publicly, there’s a chance that going into this Jacksonville Jaguars game, going up against them in preseason week two, that Tyler Shuck or Spencer Rattler could separate themselves enough going up against competition, unfamiliar competition, and an unfamiliar scheme, so on and so forth. If either one of these guys comes out with a really strong performance against Jacksonville, that could be the nail in the coffin when it comes to that quarterback battle. And we thought that we might start to see some separation on Thursday when it came down to the Saints and the Los Angeles Rams holding their joint practice, but that quarterback competition remained hyper competitive during that practice. Now, there was a ton of pressure given up by the New Orleans Saints offensive line. do not expect solid offensive line play early on in the season from any NFL team, but in particular right now, not the New Orleans Saints as they try to get their new arrangements all figured out. And so, the Saints will have to kind of figure that out at the beginning of the season, which kind of makes the quarterback battle conversation a little bit tricky because it doesn’t matter who wins the quarterback battle if the offensive line is shaky. But, hey, they want to get out there. They want to get the quarterback settled. They want to get all that figured out one way or another. You have to get that decision made. And so this Jacksonville Jaguars game presents maybe the next best opportunity after that joint practice to see who’s going to stand out. I thought that with the joint practices, the real highlight coming out of that was how tight that quarterback battle remained between Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shuck. I thought Spencer Rattler had, and I said this in the squad show last night as well, but I thought Spencer Rattler had the slightly better day just from a consistency standpoint. started his day off seven of seven through the first few drills. Had the big touchdown pass to Rashi down the field while Tyler Shuck still had a pretty solid day as well. Good, decisive, got the ball out of his hands. Had some opportunities that he didn’t necessarily get the chance to take advantage of because of the pressure, but scored a got a touchdown to Cedric Wilson Jr. in the red zone on a quick pass over the middle. Also had a touchdown to Mason Typton, we believe, on a short pass. That was a big catch and run touchdown. So yeah, put your guys in position to go out there and make some plays. I thought Tyler Shuck did a good job of that. I thought Spencer Rattler did a good job of that. Maybe Tyler Shuck was a little bit more comfortable navigating the pressure than Spencer Rattler was. Had a blitz at one point that kind of got to him and all that. But, you know, neither of these guys turned the ball over. I’m shocked shocked at the lack of interceptions throughout training camp based on the fact that you’ve got three young quarterbacks at their eldest the third year in the NFL that are throwing passes here over the course of Saints training camp and they’ve had maybe 11 maybe 12 combined interceptions over the course of uh Saints training camp. So that’s pretty solid, right? Like these guys don’t put the ball in harm’s way very often. And I know what you’re thinking like, well Tyler Shuck kind of threw a pick six up against Los Angeles Chargers. No, no, no. I get it. I get it. I get it. But I’m talking about camp here. Um, and you know, again, throw the interception, but how do you bounce back? And so, going into this next game, what do we want to see from both of these quarterbacks? Spencer Ratler, Tyler Shock, Jake’s no longer a part of the quarterback conversation. And so, or the the quarterback one conversation. And so, what is it that you want to see from these guys? For Spencer Rattler, it’s all about continuing his consistency. He’s been a really consistent passer. Um, Kellen Moore keeps saying in all of the interviews that he’s doing that, you know, consistency is going to be the thing that ends up driving everything home. So, for Tyler, for Spencer Rler, it’s just about remaining consistent while also not getting risk averse, right? Not getting too conservative. He’s got to be aggressive. He’s got to go out there. He’s got to drive this team to go and score points. He’s got to be able to do all of those things, but he has to be able to maintain the consistency along the way. So, that’s certainly what you’re going to be looking for from him. and in managing pressure, diagnosing blitzes, all those other things that um with if I don’t know if Eric McCoy is going to see a start. We don’t know exactly who is going to play in this preseason game just yet. But obviously that helps to have a guy like Eric McCoy that’s kind of doing some of that diagnosing as opposed to a, you know, undrafted free agent rookie that’s doing it and things like that. Although I thought Toriselli Simpkins did great during the preseason game. So we’ll see. But I think those are the things that you’re wanting to see, right? the operation, understanding where pressure is going to be coming from, how to handle it, all those other pieces, managing the blitz, which I thought Tyler Shuck did really well in that preseason game going up against that second and third team defense of the Chargers. Um, and then on top of all that, maintaining consistency, remaining aggressive, doing all the things that make Spencer Rattler Spencer Rattler and gave him the early lead early on in training camp. As for Tyler Shuck, it’s just about continuing to keep pushing. He has looked a lot more comfortable. He’s looked a lot more aggressive. He’s been taking some more shots. He hasn’t been waiting for wide open windows. He’s throwing in the tighter windows. Keep all that going and continue to produce without the lows, right? You had the big pick six in the to Eric Rogers in the game up against Los Angeles Chargers. Let that be your welcome to the NFL moment. Erase that. Move on. Go out there and still try to put together the big play. Be aggressive. don’t be too conservative and go out there and make some plays and start to strike up some consistency, which I think he’s done a good job of doing because remember, consistency is going to be important to Kell Moore and making this decision one way or another. If both of those guys do all of those things, then I guess you take this quarterback battle into the final week going up against the Denver Broncos. But if one of them ends up having a considerably better performance, not just a slightly better performance, but a considerably better performance, I feel like this conversation could go either way following the Jacksonville Jaguars game if the Saints are ready to make their decision, even privately at that point. So, very important game coming up for the New Orleans Saints quarterbacks when it comes to the Jacksonville Jaguars preseason week 2 matchup. But they’re not the only ones that have a lot riding on this game. There are a few pass catchers that are looking to really make sure that they’re solidifying their roles. And the number one guy is number 15, Mason Typton. We got that coming up for you next as we continue on with today’s episode of Locked on Saints, part of Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Today’s episode of Locked on Saints is brought to you by friends over at Monarch Money. You ever wish that managing all of your finances could be easier? All right, family wide receiver Mason Typton was a training camp star last year, then didn’t get an opportunity to show what it is that he could do in the preseason last season because he started, you know, he dealt with that injury all throughout the year. So, it kind of or all throughout the preseason and so it limited his opportunities to get out there. That has not been the case for him here this season. And so far, he has made good on it. He had that big touchdown down the left sideline, 54 yards from Tyler Shuck up against the Los Angeles Chargers. He’s continuously made plays, including a 50 plus yard catch and run up against the Los Angeles Rams in joint practice. Now he gets another opportunity here up against the Jacksonville Jaguars to go out there and show what it is that he can do, especially if we don’t see starters again. Chris Ave, Rasheed Jahed, Brandon Cooks. If those guys don’t take the field or only or do take the field, they’ll only take the field for 8 to 12 snaps probably. And so you get a lot of opportunities if you’re Mason Typton to go out there and be able to show what it is that you can do. I think Mason Typton’s as close to a lock without fully having turned the key just yet. You know what I’m saying? But the key is definitely in the lock and they’re just kind of waiting to to to twist it. That’s kind of all that they’re at right now because Mason Typton has become one of the most impactful wide receivers all throughout training camp. Rasheed Shahed’s up at the top for sure. Chris Olive and Brandon Cooks have helped this team move the ball quite a bit. Brandon Cooks’ hands have been outstanding here throughout camp. Late hands getting up, being able to catch the pass. He had a great leaping catch on Wednesday uh in the final practice at UC Irvine before the Saints headed up to Carson, California for those joint for that joint practice. But Mason Tipton has been not just the constant deep ball home run hitter, right? He’s not just this big play machine. He’s been a really consistent guy on timing routes as well. Outs towards the boundary sideline, slants towards middle field, deep digs, things like that. He has been somebody in the short, intermediate, and deep level that has been given the opportunity to run three-level routes or routes in all three levels and therefore become a three-level threat. This was something we talked a lot about Mason Tipton when he started to get going early on in training camp last year. That he wasn’t just a deep threat. That he was a pretty solid route runner. Super smart guy. Understands what he’s seeing on the field. Knows how to find sort of soft coverage areas. Knows how to find green grass. Knows what to do with the ball in his hands. Does all these things super super well and is a better route runner than is often credited because typically we’re talking about him, you know, on a go route and all this other stuff down the field. Um the the the big thing that he’s finally getting an opportunity to showcase here now that he has been able to put together an entire training camp and at least one preseason game soon two preseason games that the big thing he gets to show is that he will be somebody that can still have that impact all throughout. So very much looking forward to seeing Mason Typton and also looking forward to figuring out who’s that fifth wide receiver that’s going to have an impact. Bug Means his season is over. The Saints brought in Rodri Daniels. I don’t expect him to make a roster right now. Mucci Dixon hasn’t really had a lot of standout moments as a receiver. Uh and so you’re looking at some of these biggerbodied guys that are left, right? You know your locks at the top in terms of Chris Lave, Rashid Jahed, and Brandon Cooks. And again, I think we’re just waiting to turn the key on the latch when it comes to Mason Tipton at this point, but you’re still trying to figure out is it going to be Cedric Wilson? Is it going to be Donovan People Jones? Is it going to be Dante Pettis that ends up making this roster as that fifth wide receiver? or do the Saints just say, “Dang, all that,” and not even worry about a fifth wide receiver, keep four guys, and then look at roster cuts at the end of the preseason to see if maybe they could bring in a fifth wide receiver through that lens and through that sort of inroad. So, I would expect the Saints to maybe try to be a little crafty, maybe try to be a little proactive uh when it comes to waiverwire and all these other things or even not even waiverwire, but some of these veterans that might get cut in pursuing them and trying to bring them over to their practice squad and then eventually up to the active roster or even making more changes. Right. The 53man roster that will initially be set on August 26th or whatever it is, whatever that Tuesday is after the final preseason game is not going to be the week one roster. Hell, it it won’t be the next day roster for the most part, right? So, you’ll see changes there. And so, I expect the Saints to be a little active in there. But, he’s not the only pass catcher that I think has an opportunity to really showcase something. I’m going to have my eyes on big number 86, Michael Jacobson, the tight end. He has been on this New Orleans Saints training camp, excuse me, practice squad for like three years now. Several years now, let’s say. Um, has been a training camp star a couple of times already. too, but has never really been a guy that stands out during a game just yet. And so with Jawan Johnson getting a lot of run Thursday up against the Rams in that joint practice, I would expect to see him a little bit if at all uh on Sunday against Jacksonville. And so that puts at the top of that tight end room Jack Stall who’s a lock on the roster as far as I’m concerned, Michael Jacobson, Triton Welsh, and then of course you’ve got Seth Green who the team brought back as well. And so I think that a guy like Michael Jacobson has a real opportunity here to showcase, hey, I can be on this active roster and I can contribute on game day. And so I’m really really really looking forward to and will be watching him closely in the Superdome on uh Sunday up against Jacksonville because if he puts together a couple of big catches, I’m not talking about any of these guys having a 100yard day. But if any of these guys have, you know, like a Michael Jacobson has two 15 yard catches or a 15 yard catch and a 10 yard catch or, you know, get something done in the red zone, scores a touchdown on one catch for three yards and a touchdown, like that’s enough. Just knowing that he can contribute and have an impact for you at some place on the field on game day, I think does him a world of favors. I think he’s pretty close to making the roster as it is right now. I mean, you’ve only got two guys on the roster so far that are locks when it comes to tight end. We’re not expecting to see Foster tomorrow, nor expecting to see Taesm Hill anytime soon. According to Kell Moore, he said that those guys are nowhere near hitting the field. I’m paraphrasing. He didn’t say that exactly, but he said something to that effect. Uh, and you’ve got, so you’ve got Jawan Johnson, you got Jack Stall, then you’re looking for maybe a third, potentially even fourth tight end. If you only keep four wide receivers, you might keep an extra tight end to help you out there. And so a guy like Michael Jacobson could be a very, very interesting addition to that roster, his ability to be able to uh be that jump ball guy in the red zone with his 6′ 6, 6′ 7, 6’5 frame, whatever it is. Um, big tall dude. Uh, being able to kind of help you out in that area. And so I think that that’s a spot where if you’re able to finally showcase him a little bit and be able to put him in position to be able to make some plays, then I think he should take advantage of that. 6’7 is what he’s listed at. I double checked the roster just now. 67 244. Um yeah, get him out there. Let him go out there and make some plays for you, whether it’s in the short area. He does a very good job attacking the middle of the field in particular with that big frame. Gives these quarterbacks a big tall target to look for over the top of the offensive line. I mean, he has a lot in his game uh going for him. Just want to see it translate on game day instead of just on the practice field. And if he can do that, he’s a lock for that, I would say, even week one roster at this point. Um, one other player that I’ll mention, jumping over the defensive side here before we turn our attention to the run game. Um, really not even one other player. I’m one other position group, linebacker, linebacker, linebacker, linebacker. I’m so intrigued to see how this linebacker room shakes out. There’s going to be tough cuts there. There’s going to be tough cuts over in the defensive tackle room as well. And so I’m very very very intrigued to see those guys match up with the Jacksonville Jaguars and see if Danny Stzman can separate himself. See if Nephi Su can keep making plays. See if Demarco Jackson and Isaiah Stalbert can continue to shine. Can Jaylen Ford keep up what he’s doing. I’m asking a lot of questions when I should be giving you answers, but that just goes to show how talented that linebacker depth has been. almost to a surprising extent. And so I’m really really intrigued to see how they operate, not just, you know, doing the linebacker downhill run stop thing, but in coverage as well. So be watching that unit closely uh on Sunday. Finally, we’ll wrap up here with a little bit more taking a look at the run running back and the rushing game. The New Orleans Saints desperately need another running back to step up. I’ll tell you why. I think it’ll be Kendra Miller. Let’s get to that next as we continue on with today’s episode of Locked On Saints, part of Lock on Podcast Network, your team every day. The New Orleans Saints absolutely need another running back to stand out during this Jacksonville Jaguars game. And I’m going to tell you why I think it will be and needs to be running back Kendre Miller. Let me give you two stats that are very very important to contextualize Kre Miller and his performance against Los Angeles Chargers last week and then that will help us understand a little bit more about what we want to see from Kendre Miller going up against the Jaguars this weekend. Number one, 20. You need to know 20 20 yards after contact for Kre Miller. Now, he only ended with 14 yards in total in terms of rushing. So, what does that mean? That means that a lot of that contact happened in the back field and he pushed through that and was still able to go out there and gain yards, right? Six yards before contact or six yards, yeah, before contact, 20 yards after contact. That’s going to be a big part of what you’re looking for here. And then the next thing, the next number you need to know is 0.55. That’s half a yard basically, right? That was how many yards before contact on average the New Orleans offensive line allowed or created in that Chargers game last weekend. To give you a better understanding of that, the Chargers were over two yards. So, the Saints had about a quarter of the amount of yards before contact because of the offensive line and what the offensive line did. Now, remember, it’s not just first team offensive line. second team, third team, all that kind of stuff. It’s all cumulative. But for New Orleans, like these are two big metrics that they need to improve in 2025. And Kendra Miller brings you the ability to be able to go and break tackles, pick up yards after tackles. He only had about 60 to 60 to 70 rushes if I recall correctly. I’m trying to do that off top of my head. Sorry. um in 2025 or excuse me 2024 last year, but he had the most or among the most missed tackles forced per carry during the season last year. Now, small sample size obviously, but that’s something that the Saints need in their run game is the ability to go and create yardage when the yardage is not necessarily being created for you. Now again, when it comes to that preeason number of 0.55 yards before a contact, that’s not the starting offensive line. That’s not even the full game plan of your run. You’re not game planning. You’re not going up against uh a team that you’re studying film on in your first preseason game. You’re preparing and you’re game planning for them, but you’re not doing the, you know, massive amount of film site. It’s one of the reasons why like in the squad show yesterday when we were talking with Lance and John and Dylan, we were discussing sort of the Saints struggling to kind of hold off pressure on the offensive line during the joint practices. I think I might have highlighted that earlier in the episode, too. But keep in mind, there’s no game planning for a joint practice, right? So, when you’re suffering because of all these stunts and twists and all this other stuff and the movement on the defensive line, like, yeah, of course you’re going to. And so similar thing when it comes to that Chargers game, but now you want to see both of those numbers, them digies improve a little bit going up against the Jags. And I think that for Kendra Miller, like being able to go out there and have a really strong game, that’s going to be huge for him. You’re looking for the guy that can complement Alvin Chimera, not just do also what Alvin Chimera can do. And there are a couple of guys that give you a little bit of that, right? Bailis Jones Jr. his versatility, Clyde Relair and his versatility, but Clyde Reder’s ability to run between the tackles, Kam Acres’s ability to run between the tackles, as well as Kendrick Miller’s ability to run between the tackles. And all three of those guys serving in pass protection, that’s going to be who earns the RB2 sticker, right? That’s who’s going to be that guy. And so, I think Kendrick Miller has the ability to do it. He’s got to show a little bit in pass protection. You look at Clad Razilair picking up the blitz on the 50 plus yard touchdown from Tyler Shuck to Mason Tipton against the Chargers. Seeing some stuff like that where you’re picking up those blitzes even if it’s not a 50 plus yard touchdown the field but you’re picking up those blitzes blitzes. You’re helping to keep your quarterback clean, all those things. I think that becomes super important for this New Orleans Saints rushing game and becomes very very important for a Kendra Miller who I think has the ability in terms of capability, in terms of talent, in terms of skill set to be able to thrive in this Kell Moore offense. It’s going to ask him to do a lot more of the stuff that he did with TCU than he was being asked to do with Clint Kubak’s wide zone outside run offense last year for instance. And even if we look at the distribution of rushing against the Chargers, we didn’t really see Kell Moore’s scheme. We saw like over 40% I think it was outside zone or at least over 30% outside zone during that game. And so when you take that into consideration as well, there’s still a lot more for this run game to show. And I think we saw some promise in the joint practice against the Rams. We saw some nice runs from Kre Miller from Alvin Chimera, even though he had he had a ball punched out at one point, but other than that, like good runs from Alvin Chimera. He had a touchdown run. He got the left edge, I think it was Cam Acres for a touchdown. So, I think you’re looking for all of that to kind of translate now just into the game. And and again, just like we talked about with, you know, Michael Jacobson and and and Mason Typton, those guys didn’t have don’t have to go out there and have a 100redyard pass catching days and these running backs don’t have to go out there and have 100 yard rushing days. But if you can put together four plus yards per carry, if the offensive line can create one one or more yard at this point of yards before contact per attempt, those are the things that you’re going to be looking for. Those are the adjustments, the changes, the improvements, the little incremental minutia that you want to see incrementally get better game by game, practice by practice, exhibition by exhibition, week by week. And so a lot of that is what I’m going to have my eyes on during that Jacksonville Jaguars game. And then similarly over on the defensive side, like seeing a little bit more when it comes to that pass rush. There’s a lot of really exciting stuff that’s going on. I talked to one coach uh who talked about the defensive interior being a place where he’s not looking forward to roster cut downs because there’s a lot of tough choices that have to be made there. That front seven as a whole has played really really well here throughout training camp. Does it mean that the Saints are going to be uh top five defense in the NFL? No. but you’re looking for guys that are going to be contributors and you’re finding a lot of those in the front seven which is a bit of an improvement from where the Saints have been in the recent past. And so I think those are all things that you’re looking for uh for this New Orleans Saints team to, you know, be able to showcase a bit against the Jacksonville Jaguars in addition to that quarterback competition and those pass catchers. All right, next time that you see us, Lance and Dylan will be live after the game. John and I will join from the dome. So, make sure you come through for that for Saint Squad. Doesn't matter how many completions you have it is about scoring drives. Points points points.
They’ve got to name a starter before next week’s game. Starter needs to know he’s the starter and get all 1st team practice snaps before the last preseason game. It would be a disservice otherwise.
I thought Rattler was the guy last year but went 0-6 and this year first preseason game didnt flash to me. If Shough has good completion and moves the chains, throws a touchdown against Jaguars , He will start first week.
Yeah, Rattler is going to be our Baker. Welcome to the new Cleveland Browns folks. Get your updated paper bags!
you know why im here
Shough is the starter. The rest is just noise.
It's not a qb battle. TS wasn't given all that money to take a back seat to Rattler. It was supposed to be Carr job. TS will start. It's his team.😂
Ross, could you possibly begin your podcasts any more BORINGLY? I mean, have a heart, dude, and cut the verbiage . . . william
I don't think that any of the qbs will take a definitive lead in the game because they are both at this time, equal in ability. I think Shough will get the job. After all, if he is equal to Rattler now he has a better chance to grow because he is fresh out of college. I also think that Shough is more of a gamer.
Be patient everyone. Both QB’s are probably going to play this season. With young Tackles and being weak at RG (Ruiz) and depending on oft injured McCoy and Penning the O Line probably won’t be very good. This Offense is reliant on the success of the running game and so far it’s not going well. We’re going to be playing catch up a lot with this team so I can see both QB’s playing. We constantly rely on oft injured players. It’s time to start replacing them . Defensively we have to stop the run and mobile QB’s . We haven’t in the past few seasons . Last week it didn’t change . Foskey played most of the game and couldn’t make 1 play ! Hopefully things will improve. I hope we can prove the pundits wrong !
Shough
Jagwires… Oof. Just say Jags.
Here’s a name to consider for WR signing. 6’5” 225lbs 4.54 40 time for Mike Strachan. Just cut by the crowded Commanders.
I deep down think the coaches have been eyeing and are almost certain Shough will start. With the weak Offensive line and receivers it may however be a matter of time before Rattler appears on the scene as Shough will get his fair share of roughing, and being shaken up(if not tore apart) from good defensive teams ready to devour young prey. Not trying to be sarcastic but I heavily doubt any QB they decide to go with will be the only one hitting the turf this season. Seasoned Derek Carr got injured time and again, and season ending injuries.
Rattler…stay ready as your time can be called upon if initially on the sideline.
Rattler had 53 yards in the 1st half. Shough had 54 yards in the first half in a two minute span 😂 Rattler is garbage 🗑️ Saints will get a vet or released player after the cuts. Should try to trade for Tanner McKee or Jake Browning
WR 6-3 Tyler Boyd is who we need to bring in ASAP
If you ask me, it's not even an argument. Tyler Shough was the only QB who put points on the board in the 1st preseason game. It doesn't matter how good these guys look in practice if they dont produce in the game
Start Shough and let him grow, You grow through adversity. And Rattler will be on the ready to show that he feels he should have been the chosen one. They need to have the fire to beat each other out and Rattler is not chosen will have to have a chip on his shoulder and vice versa
I see us 1-6 or 2-5 mid October. And that’s the easiest part of the season. Should be fun.
