🔴LIVE 🔴Tampa Bay Rays VS San Francisco Giants / August 15/ Envivo TV/MLB THE SHOW 25
Inner League Baseball on MLB The Show. It’s the Tampa Bay Rays taking on the San Francisco Giants. First pitch coming your way next. Just about to get underway and starting this one, Kai Tang. Oh, you know, this guy wants to be better than that. I mean, the ERA is bloated. He understands that he’s got to put his team in a better position to win ball games. And at this point, you have to forget about your own individual stats and you have to go out there and attack and try to get that W. And if you do that, you’ll look up and most likely that ERA will have dropped over time. Now, it’s the rookie DH number 14 and that’s way high and we’re underway. And a pitch. Bunch attempt, but that goes foul. Giants. One-1 now. and downstairs. Fouled off. He was late. Line drive. And that should be extra bases. Now he’ll turn for second. They’re still chasing it as he rounds second and he makes it into third with a leadoff triple. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. Took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. So the go-ahehead run in scoring position and now it’s Brandon Laauo. Good power. Not great in the OBP department. And that one fouled off. All right. Rip to short. Zips it to first, but the go ahead run comes in to score. So important to really lock in on an at bat like this. It seems easy with the infield back, but you’ve got to make sure you put the ball in play. Put it on the ground, brought that run in. Yandi Diaz now. just missed in the air center field. Lee has this one sized up. Hauls it in for the Now a look at Kevin Cash’s lineup for the Tampa Bay Rays. And no doubt a big factor in this series so far. Brandon Laauo. Yeah, Booan. He’s been just clutch for this team so far in the series. Five runs batted in to this point. You know, guys like him who can just slow the game down, quiet the nerves when they’re runners on base or pressure situations, they’re as valuable as it gets. We’ll see if he keeps making an impact today. Josh Low stands in now and watches strike one. Off the mark there. One and one. One and one. Swing and a miss as he chases that one darting out of the zone. That’s hard hit on the line. No trouble here. puts it away for the out and that is that. But they push across one run, one hit, no errors and no one left. Bottom half of inning number one coming up. It’s the Rays one and the Giants coming up back here at Oracle Park and today’s starter Drew Rasmusen. Singy. He’s kind of a road warrior. Yeah, I definitely say so. You know, some guys shrink a little bit on the road. They’re so used to just, you know, having the comforts of being at home and having the fans behind them, but this guy seems to thrive in adversity and being in some hostile environment. So, when you have a player like this on your team that goes out there and competes, you definitely like your chances away from your home ballpark. Elliot Ramos leading things off and takes a strike. The 01 right through there for a strike. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. And that’s downstairs. And that’s ball two. And that one missing low. There’s a high chopper. Throws to first in time. One up, one down. Now we take a peek at the Giants lineup. Not the highest team batting average for this squad. They’re down towards the bottom of the league in total hits. And Singi, because of that, they don’t score a ton. Yeah, and Boo, I’m looking for a little better performance out of them today. I mean, if they’re going to be dangerous, if they’re going to be able to create scoring opportunities, they’re going to have to start making some individual adjustments. A lot of players in this lineup probably aren’t happy with how they’ve hit the ball so far. So, today’s a chance to get something going. Rafael Des batting with one down, takes a strike. One out. Base is empty. Going to count one and two. That’s a ball tried to attack with a sweeper. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Two outs. Base is empty. Casey Schmidt the next to hit. And that one upstairs. Ball one. Two outs. Base is empty. Cut on and lifted in the air. Mangum makes the catch and that’ll do it. Second inning, set to go. Here’s the third baseman, Junior Camo. Giants. All right, San Francisco. That misses the zone. One and0. That one missed. Eric Summersgill with home plate duty in this one. Kind of known for being generous with the corners. Chris, you know, I think that used to be a lot bigger deal in past eras where pitchers were working more in and out with their pitches. But yeah, we’ll see if those corners come into play in this one. Hey, no pitcher going to argue at all. Now the outside corner now two and one. Chris, do players ever change their approach in meaningful ways based on who’s umpiring or is it good to just be aware of tendencies so you’re not that surprised? I’d say the latter because pitcher’s got to pitch to his strength regardless. The hitter’s got to hit to his strength. So you’re aware of it, but you have to just hunt for what you can handle. knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. As the game has moved along, we see more and more information supplied by teams about the umpires. I’ve been in clubouses where they have pictures of all four umpires, nicknames, hometowns, and as well hobbies listed just so you can kind of small talk the umpire a little bit. That’s great. Jake Mangum next to hit for the Rays. Bottom of the zone and a cold strike. Come on. That clips a corner. That one drilled left field in one. Hops off the wall. Should be extra bases. And that’s a double. Batting seventh. Catcher Hunter Feducha. One out, runner at second. And here’s the catcher. Hunter Feducha swinging a ground ball over to Smith. And there’s two down. Batting eight short stop. So up next, Hassan Kim out in front and foul to the left side. Mangum stands at second with two gone. The shorts stop takes a ball. And that is out of play. Lifted in the air left field. Pretty well struck. Ramos makes the grab. And that is that. One left for Tampa, but they lead it one to nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the second and digging in for San Francisco, Dominic Smith. Pitch misses there. And that’s ball one. And there’s the strike. Well, it looks like he’s wanting to work the upper part of the strike zone. What does that mean? Top hand better be working for the hitters. Adjust that side a little bit. Give yourself a chance to hit. And it is two and one. Yeah, that’s a little high. Think he wanted that call on the upper part of the zone, but just didn’t get it. Now he’s just trying to get a better feel for how much it missed, so he can adjust his sights just a little bit. Next offering is in for a strike. And boy, that was the pitch. 3-1. You want to be really aggressive on the fast ball. on the ground to third. Camero gets it to first. One up, one down. Batting fifth, the short stop, Willie Adam. Willie Adam stands in. Knee high. That’s in for a strike. He’s a bad ball hitter. So even if you get him to chase pitches outside the zone, he still might beat you. Not an easy out by any means. Down the right field line. That’s a base hit. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Everything came together perfectly for him right there. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. Man at first with one gone. Jung Hu Lee the next Giant to hit. Base hit. That was smoke through the infield. The throw to third. Save. And now second and third with one gone. went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. Got the top of the ball a little bit, but not much. That was hit pretty hard through the infield. So, I think he’ll be happy with that swing. Definitely generated some good bats speed. So, now here’s the DH. Tyler Fitzgerald golden opportunity right here. That one finds the zone. Strike one. Two on, one out. That clips a corner. Cold night tonight, Boo. And that’s a pretty firm fast ball right there. I tell you what, memories of getting jammed, they creeping into my mind right now. Ball one there. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Huge strike out there. Well, this is where the team aspect really comes into play on the offensive side of the game, right? I mean, missed opportunity to tie it up with the runner at third, one out, couldn’t put the ball in play. So, now it’s time to pick him up. And that’s where good teams, they go to. They operate on this level of next man up. That mentality is what causes them to win series, get into the postseason. That helps keep the energy and morale high in the dugout. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. And now Patrick Bailey popped up to the left into foul ground. makes the grab and that ends the inning. Giants leave a couple and it remains one- nothing. Back here in San Francisco, here’s the center fielder, Tristan Peters, trying to pick up his first knock in the big leagues. Tang back to work. And that’s in for a strike. Peters measures six feet even, 25 years old, and he was drafted in the seventh round in 2021. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Next offering upstairs. And that gets the inside corner for a strike. That just misses and the count is filled up. Really good take especially with two strikes. Liner and this could be trouble around first heading for two. And his first big league hit is a double. Everything came together for him. Man, that feels so good to shoot an absolute bolt the opposite way. split the gap and know that you’ve got extra bases right off the bat. That’s the kind of thing hitters dream about when they’re falling asleep at night. Back to the top of the lineup. Here’s the Rays leadoff hitter. Ripped a triple to open up the ball game. That’s in there. That’s strike one. Come on, Giants. And ball one. Nope. Definitely a swing and miss slider down and in. He finished that really well. just couldn’t get him to offer at it. That one fouled off. Two and two. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. Foul ball. Another two- two upcoming man at second. And now it’s filled up. Still just the second batter of the inning. And on the mound, he’s already thrown 13 pitches. They got him working hard out there. to the right side. Devils whips it to first on the run and he gets him. Nicely done. Lao at the plate. Picked up an RBI in his last at bat. Still their only run of the game so far. I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone here. Pitchers looking for a strikeout or a ground ball, hoping to keep that runner at third. And he swings and misses and it’s nothing at one. Swang and a ball lifted in the air. Ramos squeezes it. Runner tagging from third. He’s in on the sack fly and they lead by two. Well, he’s always capable of losing one over the fence. He might have just missed it right there, but a good job to drive in that run from third. And here’s the first baseman, Yandi Diaz. Giants. And a good fast ball to start him off. That’s strike one. He didn’t want to give up that run, but he did. Got the fly ball. Sack fly out. Now it’s time to attack these other guys. Get your team back in the dugout. He swings and fouls one off. Two down. Nobody on gets a piece and stays alive. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another two outs way inside. Gets out of the way. Oh, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where a pitch would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. Good job to fight that one off. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. And that’s the third out. One run, one hit, no errors, and nobody left on. We head now to the home half of inning number three. It’s the Rays two and the Giants nothing. And we’re back set for the bottom of the third. And digging in for San Francisco, Drew Gilbert. Gilbert. First pitch misses. And another ball. Just missed. Well, I would expect in this three- 0 count, you’re taking all the way. See if he’ll walk you. Next offering is in for a strike. Swung on. Belted ranging back. Just missed it. Now batting leftielder Elliot. So the batting order turns over. Here’s Elliot Ramos grounded out to short in his first trip. That’s a little bit low. Foul ball. swings through that one for strike two. Ground ball to the right side and that’s just foul. One down, base is empty. That one just misses. Right side hard hit. Fires to first in time. Now batting second base Raphael De. Two down. Base is empty. Now a chance for Raphael Des. Struck out swinging his first time. That one’s in there. And it’s 0 and one. And that one upstairs. Ball one. He really committed to that fast ball up at the top of the zone. He knows that if he makes a mistake in the zone, it gets hit hard by a power guy like this. That’s a nice miss right there. And that misses ball two. out towards right center field. Peters sizes this one up. He’s got it and that’ll end the inning. Back here at Oracle Park. New inning getting started. Now it’s the right fielder Josh Low. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Well, these Rays doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. They’re doing a good job of working the pitch count and they’ve been able to push a couple of runs across to score as well. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. Still relatively early, but with a pair of runs already on the board, the ripple effect of that high pitch count might set him up to do more damage later in this game. That one fouled off. Just missing there. Full count. Three and two. That one misses. So a lead off walk. Well, a breaking ball in that 3-2 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. Man at first. Now the third baseman, Junior Camroero, 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. On the corner for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Signs of movement in the Giants bullpen. Logan Webb preparing to come on if needed. Walker also getting ready. Nope. Low gets his lead at first with nobody out. And that’s in for a strike. That’s good pitch there. Billy had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, hit a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Foul ball still a one and two count. Grounder might be two. Goes to second for one. On to Smith. Two. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. Jake Mangum. And stepping in for the Rays, Jake Mangum doubled his first time. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. Swinging a foul out of play. Two down. Nobody on inside and the count is one and two. And he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. So, no runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left. On now to the bottom of the fourth, it’s the Rays two and the Giants nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. John Chabi and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Casey Schmidt. Swag and a ball hit out towards left center field. It falls in and that’s a knock. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. Now batting Dom Smith stands in. First time up. be grounded to third. Rudder at first with no outs here. Check swing called strike with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. stays alive. Nobody out. Runner at first. Maybe a two ball. Five, four, three, and they turn the double play. They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leagers. They make tough plays look simple. And the batter will be the shortstop. Willie Adamus one for one with a single so far. In the air right field pretty well struck low drop step going back up onto the arcade and gone. See you later. He nails one out to right. It’s 2-1. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. Elevated fast balls, especially away, are like putting the ball on a tea. Hitters do a lot of cage work. They’re comfortable hitting off the TE’s. And he was comfortable right there hitting that ball opposite field for a home run. Two outs, nobody on. And now the center fielder Jung Hu Lee late on that fast ball. Two down, base is empty, but one run across. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Just missed. Just missed. A rare three ball count here. He’s been throwing strikes all day. Got to be ready to hit if you’re in the box. And that’s a base hit. Joey gets on base and keeps it going. Oh, that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there. That pretty much split the zone down the middle. And those are the ones where you got to make them pay. Runner at first with two away. Next will be the Giants DH. Tyler Fitzgerald. He’s 0 for one. And that one wrapped foul off the plate inside. One ball, one strike. Boo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. The one-1 is fouled off. Two outs now. A screamer into the outfield and the inning is over. But not before they’re able to draw closer with this blast. And this is now a 2-1 ball game. You’re dialed into the show. We’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth. Logan Web. He’s averaging more than one hit allowed per inning pitch this season and that’s not where you want to be at all. So, we’ll see how he does here. And now the catcher for the Rays, Hunter Feducha. He’s 0 for one. And that’s outside. And that’s ball one on the ground right side. Devils throws on to first. One away here in the fifth. Now batting short stop Hung Kim. Hung Kim next to hit for the Rays. Fly to left. his first time. And there’s a strike on the outside corner. Next offering is in for a strike. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches. Now in an 02 hole. He’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake on the ground right side and it goes just foul. Gets under and pops it up. Bailey has a beat on it. He’s got it. And there’s two away. That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up. Two outs, space is empty. Here’s the center fielder, Tristan Peters. Come on, Logan. First offering, and it just misses. And that drops in for a strike. And now the count one and two after the swing and the miss. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. Close but called a ball. Two balls, two strikes. Almost got him. That one ripped. That’s back onto the track and he makes the catch. No runs, no hits, no errors. Last half of the fifth coming up, it’s the Rays two and the Giants one. We head to the bottom of the fifth. Now it’s the Giants catcher Patrick Bailey. Patrick Bailey. The pitch. That one’s in there. That’s strike one. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. That one missing inside. That’s inside. In there at the knees. Two and two. went with the sweeper, but it misses. Drew Gilbert in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Lifted in the air down the left side. Kim, he’s got it. And there’s one down. Yeah, that’s a tough play for the infielder. Ranging back into the outfield. There’s part of him that’s saying, “Hey, where you at, outfielder? Call me off.” But he stayed focused and made a nice catch right there. And now the right fielder, Drew Gilbert, fly to center his first time. Just missed. Base is empty, one away. Last half of inning number five. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Yeah, that’s fouled off. San Francisco. One, two now. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another line drive. caught. That swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well. I know it didn’t produce a hit, but he made solid contact. And that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate. Elliot Ramos, the next Giant to hit. Bowl for two in this one. And a fast ball misses outside for a ball. Ball one. just missed. And downstairs, Rafael Des on deck for San Francisco. And there’s a strike. Good heater at 98. And that one clips the corner. Fouled off. And they’ll do it again. swings through that and it’s a strikeout. And good work there as he gets a one, two, three. So they make short work of him there. We’re through five. It’s the Rays two and the Giants one. And we’re back. All set for the top of the six. To the plate now for the Rays is the DH number 14. Web back to work. That’s outside. Ball one. Action in the San Francisco bullpen. Christian CS getting loose out there. Walker also throwing. And another ball now three and 0. That one misses. So a leadoff walk. Four pitches. That’s an easy walk, man. He could have walked me right there, boo. The last one wasn’t even close. Brandon Laauo next to hit for the Rays. When you’re taking your lead over there at first, you got to be very careful. This guy on the mountains got a good pickoff move. Bats in there and one. He must have been looking for something else cuz he gave up on that pitch a little early. It was right down Main Street. Probably not going to see a better pitch to hit in this at bat. Web checks over to first and he’s back. Get the easy two now. Let’s go. Next offering is fouled back. This is a great dynamic right here. Speedy runner at first, thinking about taking second. Catcher with the pop time that leaves Jaws on the floor. This might get interesting. Boo. Breaking ball misses down and away on the ground. Right side. four, six, three, and they turn the double play. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. So, next to the plate for Tampa Bay, Yandi Diaz. And that one clips the corner. Two down. Nobody on. That’s off the inside corner and now it’s even one and one. Swang and a miss. Well, he went inside a couple of times and now outside. Hitter’s not exactly sure where to look for this next pitch. And he grounds one to the right side to first. Third out. So they go quietly there. 234 do up in the home half of the sixth. It’s the Rays two and the Giants won. Ryan Pepio comes on now. And this is an important part of this game. tight score and still a lot of outs to get. So they’re looking for a big outing out of him right here to get some critical outs. Rafy coming to the plate now. Giants second base Raphael De the pitch outside low and it’s one and0. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Ian Seymour warming up for manager Kevin Cash. Baker the right-hander loosening up as well. Swang and a miss. There’s that change up. Filthy change up right there. Just pulled the string. the one two and there’s a ball. Still two and two after the foul ball. That’s down and in. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. Got him. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. Well, just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast ball right there. And I don’t think he was taking it thinking it might be a cold ball or anything. I just think he was flat out frozen. Did not expect that location in my opinion. Casey Schmidt now at the plate, one for two. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Schmidt 26 years old and he was a second round pick in 2020. Home team down a run here in the bottom of the six. And another ball. Foul ball there. Next offering misses down and away. The guy at the plate could recognize Slider out of the hand. Didn’t stay in the tunnel very long in terms of depth and perception. He knew right away it was an off speed pitch. And that’s inside and a good at bat ball four. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. Now it’s Dominic Smith that hits the dirt and that’s ball one. Maybe losing command a little bit after the walk. Next pitch, not even close. Schmidt leads off first with one away. Giants. That one missed. Oh, that pitch not even close. A two- count now. He can’t be overaggressive. He’s got to make sure that pitch is right on a TE for him. At 96, that pitch is in for a strike. Willis in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. One-run game, one out, one on. And fouled off. Struck him out. He says, “I don’t care about draft rounds. Take a seat.” Unafraid to throw it right there. That’s trusting your stuff. just one out away from getting out of a huge jam. So, two down now and here is Willie Adamus. He’s already homered here in this one. The shorts stop takes a ball. Giants in the air to left center. Mangum on the move. He makes the grab and that is that. So the Giants leave one and they trail it here two to one. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Ryan Walker. Pretty tight game, so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Walker. Well, one-run game. Now it’s the right fielder, Josh Low. Josh Low. Giants on the corner for a strike and it’s 0 and one. Wow. Just a beautiful back door slider right there. If you’ve got any chance of hitting that pitch, you have to wait until the absolutely last millisecond. Just a tough pitch to hit and not an easy one to throw either. gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Man, he got a real good pitch to hit right there with two strikes. You cannot miss that. Not a great slider at all. And I tell you what, that’s where you’ve got to do damage. He looked like he was on time getting the bat through the zone, but he just caught air. Junior Camro digs in now and he swings and misses at the initial offering. Giants. One down, base is empty. Swings and misses. 0 and two now. Two pretty nasty sliders to get this hitter in an 02 count. If you’re up there at the plate, you got to look up in the zone and spit on anything that’s down. That misses. Now one and two. Bases empty, one away here in the top half of inning number seven. spoils that one and it remains two and two and that’s ruled the swing. It’s a strike out. Oh, big power guy right there and generating so much bat speed. It’s hard to bring that to a halt once you’ve committed. They tried to check the swing, just couldn’t do it. Mangum up for the third time here. Watches that one miss. Two outs. That’s a little bit low. 20. Yeah, that’s too high. Here’s a 3 0 and fires in a fast ball at 95. Two down to and that is low for ball four. Well, that’s a really good take right there. And that’s just mentally prepared knowing that if it’s not on a TE, you’re going to take that pitch because you still have one more strike to work with. Not easy to lay off, but he did an excellent job in that plate appearance. Walker throws to first. Mangum back in on a dive. He might want to steal second in this spot, but he’s dealing with a catcher that has one of the best pop times in the game. He needs to pick his spot very wisely. Feducha stands in here. tried to hold back his swing there, but went around. Next offering is in for a strike. Probably the best one we have seen. Throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. And that one is inside. Good eye in that spot. This one in the air. Center field. Lee nabs it and that’ll do it. The Rays strand just the one. They lead it 2-1. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Ian Seymour. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. So, digging in, Jung Lee. He’s two for two. Jung Lee. Fast for a strike. Up the middle. Lao on the run. sends it over to first. It’s there and that’s a great play. Impressive backhand stop, but he had a little trouble getting rid of it and had to take that extra step which could have cost him, but good job to make sure he got a good handle on it and he got off a good strong throw to still get the out. And now the DH Tyler Fitzgerald. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. trying to hold a one-run lead here in the bottom of the seventh. And a count one and two. Really going after him here. All fast balls to get ahead in the count. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. Patrick Bailey the next Giant to hit. belly. Well, both sides equally as strong, so not a good time to try to turn him around with a relief pitcher and put him on the other side of the plate. First pitch just misses. Now, this manager knows that his players are just trying to do too much. Everybody needs to just take a deep breath, relax, and let it naturally happen. That one finds the zone. Strike one. Swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field and that keeps the inning alive. Really nice job staying up the middle with his approach. He didn’t try to do too much with the pitch. Just shot it through the infield. So up next, Drew Gilbert. Rolled softly, but that goes foul. Typically, the outfield defense will play a little bit deeper just to keep the ball in front. Make sure that runner on first doesn’t come all the way around to score and tie this ball game up. Next pitch is outside. Sliced hard but foul. Bailey off of first with two away. Popped in the air left field and that’ll get down for a hit. They stopped the lead runner at second. Now two on with two outs. Well, that was an important at bat in this game. So, a great job there stepping up to the challenge. That’s a ball that a lot of times you’ll see the shorts stop or left fielder be able to get to if it hangs up in the air long enough. But right there, it just died and found a way to drop in on the green stuff for the base hit. Now, a huge at bat in this game coming up. Ramos in the box now takes strike one. Check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. And that just misses. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Got him. Inning over. That’s a crucial missed opportunity. Well, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job of getting out of the jam. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Tristan Beck. Well, he’s been hit pretty hard at times this season as you see with the big erra. So, this is an important outing for him to get on the right track. Well, one-run game. Stepping in Hassan Kim. Here comes the pitch. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. And a foul ball. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. Just missed. line drive to short and caught. Nothing you can do about those as a hitter. Even though you know that, they still drive you absolutely crazy. And now the center fielder, Tristan Peters. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Activity in the bullpen. Christian CS getting ready to come in for Bob Melvin. Bivvens a hard throwing right-hander up as well. late with the swing there. And now one and two. Waves at the bender for the strike out. Definitely made him chase a little bit out of his own right there. I don’t think that’s a strike if he takes it. Pretty textbook pitching. Get ahead in the count. Get the guy in the box on his heels and then force him to chase your pitch where he doesn’t have much of a chance to do any damage. That one the other way and that’s a base hit and that keeps the inning going. The first move felt like a bit of a guess. You have to be right in those spots or things can get away from you awfully quickly. Brandon Laauo next to hit for the Rays. pickoff throw and he’s back in easily. This might be a steal situation, but that’s not your average catcher behind the dish. You have to be careful here. inside. Just missed swing and a highf fly ball left field. He’s got it. And that is that. One left for Tampa, but they still lead it two to one. Back here in San Francisco. Bottom of the inning. Now the number two hitter Raphael De. First pitch misses. And another ball. Next offering in there for a strike. Two balls in a strike. Nasty two- slider there for a strike. That tells you he’s got a lot of confidence in that pitch. fought off foul looking to get the tying run on base and a foul ball. He stays alive. Breaking ball misses down and away. That’s a really good take. line drive. That’s a base hit. Had a good start to the inning. Love how he became a really tough out with two strikes right there. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages working on going to the opposite field and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did. And he did it perfectly. Casey Schmidt, the next Giant to hit and a fast ball in there for a strike at 91. with the go ahead run at the plate here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. Strike three. Got him swinging and he’s registered. Three Ks in this one. Really tight bite on that slider and just couldn’t get the barrel to it out front. You’ve got to try to pull those hands tight to the body to get it through. And I’m thinking he probably wanted that pitch to end up even more inside to keep it out of the danger zone, but it had enough late break and deception to get the job done. Dominic Smith, the next Giant to hit. 0 for three in this one. Swinging a drive. This one is crushed. No doubt about it. And here in the late stages, they had the lead. His fourth home run of the season. It’s 3-2. Well, that swing changes things. Yes, it does. They were in striking distance. They found a way to fight back big time. A breaking ball on the inside part of the plate requires a hitter to stay really square with his mechanics. If you fly open with the front shoulder, there’s no way you keep that ball fair. An outstanding job mechanically. He deserves that home run. And the Rays manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make the move. Ian Seymour is done. and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. New pitcher on now. Ryan Baker just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpin can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. One down. Next to hit, Willie Adamus. He’s already homerred in this game. Swaying and a miss. There’s the slider. It’s 0 and one. The shorts stop takes a ball. Bullpen movement for the Rays. Griffin Jacks warming up for manager Kevin Cash. dives and he can’t hang on. No throw. He’s in safely. And now there’s a runner at first. Now here is Jung Huli. Jung Hu Lee. Adamus the base runner at first with one out. There’s a strike. Now move to first and he’s back safely. Battling here as he fouls it away. One in the dirt pitch misses outside and it’s two and two. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. That’s towards center. Are you kidding me? That’s out number two. Now batting the designated hitter, Tyler Fitzgerald. Tyler Fitzgerald getting ready to hit. And first offering is fouled off. That’s the third. Camo, they take the force out. That’s the inning. Ah, when the Giants go deep, it’s bye-bye, baby. Last chance for the Rays coming up. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Randy Rodriguez. He’s got some of the best swing and miss stuff going right now. Striking out hitters at a very high rate this year. So, this should be fun to watch. Gondi Diaz late swing fouled all the one this to third over to Smith and they get the lead off man in the ninth. That’s why you hug the lines on the corners late in the ball game like this. Positioned perfectly. He’s two outs away. Josh Low will hit next. Giants. Late swing. Fouled to the left. One down. Base is empty. That one misses and a count even one and one. Rays down by a run. Next offering is in for a strike. Just amazing to me how many closers and backend relievers just throw absolute gas these days. I never would have had a chance. In the air left side, reaching for it, makes the catch. Got to love the over the shoulder catch. I tell you what, those are really fun to make. So, they’re down to their final out. Junior Camro next to hit for the Rays. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. And that’s through there for a strike. 0 and one. Next offering is fouled back. One strike away and a swing and a miss and that is the ball game. I’d say you’re lying if you say you don’t feel a fivegame losing streak. This W definitely helps them relax a little bit and take some of the pressure off from it going to a six, seven, or even an eightgame losing streak. 32 the final score. They hang on to win it by a run. For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show, I’m John Shami. Thanks for joining us.
