🔴LIVE 🔴Pittsburgh Pirates vs Chicago Cubs / August 15/Baseball Envivo /MLB THE SHOW 25
has action out of the NL Central. It’s the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Chicago Cubs. And we’ll be back with the first pitch right after this. Just about set to go now. And the pitcher for this one, Matthew Boyd. Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club. And what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him. And it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point, maybe it’s the motion, but just some way somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. And stepping in is the speedy number nine. That one finds the zone and we’re underway here this afternoon. up and in. And now it’s even one and one. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and in just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it. He had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Just misses. Two and two. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Next pitch misses inside and it’s a full count. He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here. I love it. This to third. Gets it to first. One up, one down. We take a check of the Pirates lineup put together by manager Derek Shelton. And Chris, this group has been struggling to put up runs lately. Well, they haven’t been on base a ton and even when they are, they haven’t been hitting very well with runners on base. So, they need a player or two to really step up, have some quality at bats, hit according to the situation, and sort of break out of this. I think if they do, the rest of this lineup will follow. Spencer Horowitz in the box with one away as he takes ball one. fouls one off out of play. Back to our left. One out. Base is empty. In the air, left field down the line. Half on his horse and he can’t quite get there. It’s a foul ball. got him swinging for the strike out. Slider got him for strike three. Oh, that slider was way out of the zone. And for me, it just comes down to not seeing the pitch out of the hand, not tracking it into the zone. And then also being a little bit anxious, not confident in your two strike approach. And so when a guy’s in that position, you get him to commit early. And a lot of times you get the swing and miss as you did right there. Two out space is empty. right through there for a strike. Got to be careful here. This is the type of hitter that can punish you even with pitches outside the zone. Flew open a little bit with that front shoulder, but was able to slow his bat down just enough to make contact with that pitch. Keep the bat alive. foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. That one drilled left field. And that should be extra bases. And he starts his afternoon off right with a double. Showed a lot of fight with two strikes in that AB. When you connect and it jumps off your bat like that, you’re thinking double at the very least. Put a great swing on it. And man, he wasn’t fooled at all. Here’s Tommy Fam. Matthew. First pitch and he just misses. Boy, you always want to come out in the first inning, try to put something up on the board. It’s a big two out double right there. See if the cleanup man can drive him in and put a tally up there on the board. Pirates. There’s a strike. the strategy of winning a ball game when you can make that pitcher work a little more, expose himself by throwing pitches, that can be the key to winning perhaps later on. So, a good job of extending this inning, getting a knock with two outs to bring the number four hole hitter up and that skips in the dirt. Reynolds at second with two down. inside and it’s three and two. Nick Gonzalez in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Come on, punch him out. Blows the high heat past him. That’s a strike out. A lot of adrenaline. We can see it right there. And sometimes you just got to let it out. That’s an outstanding job of taking that, executing, and getting out of a tough inning. Back here at the friendly confines and towing the slab here, Mitch Keller. And Chris, pitching on the road has not been particularly kind to him. Yeah. And you don’t want to be too quick to say that he can’t pitch on the road. Sometimes, you know, it’s just a matter of luck. It’s not having a field difference between the bullpin mound to the mound out there on the playing field. Don’t know what it is, but I know this. He’s got good enough stuff to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home. So, we’ll see what he’s able to do in this one. Michael Bush leading things off and takes a strike. swing and a highf fly ball right field. That one back. That one on its way and it’s gone. And it gives him the lead in the first. It’s one- nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. He’s so good at getting his arms extended and that’s exactly what he did right there. You don’t typically want to pull a pitch in that part of the plate, but he doesn’t allow his wrist to roll over. Stays through the ball, gets the loft, and gets the home run in half. up to hit and a foul ball. Swing and a miss as he was late that time. The real threats are coming up. already given up a home run in this inning. He’s going to really have to bear down. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. Swing and a miss. Struck him out and that’s the first out. Nice recovery after giving up the homer. Good late cut for the strike out there. That thing really got in on him. And you know, the cutter isn’t really a huge swinging miss pitch most of the time because it’s not really meant to move a whole lot. You’re just trying to miss the big part of the barrel and maybe get some weak contact. But that one right there did a whole lot more than that. That was a really good pitch. Kyle Tucker in now. Takes ball one off the plate. Part of the order coming through now. And with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. One down, base is empty. Yeah, the pitch is in for a strike. And the count one and one and the sweeper misses. This one ripped but fouled to the right. He’s getting the barrel to the ball. Just got to work on that timing a little bit. spoils that one and it remains two and two. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. The next pitch misses and it’s three and two. Fouled off and they’ll do it again downstairs. And that’s ball four. It wasn’t easy, but he earned that walk after a long at bat. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk. Very gritty. And now the batter is Carson Kelly. Here’s a swing and a line drive. And that’s a base hit into right field. And he boots it. Still slings it to second. Well, just a total breakdown defensively right there. I mean, allowing a run to score all the way from first because of an error pretty much shouldn’t happen. But every once in a while we see one of these weird plays and it leaves everyone kind of scratching their heads. One out, runner at second. So up now for Chicago. Owen Casey out to center. Sinsky hauls it in and there’s two away. Batting six. Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup. This group was shut out their last game, so we’re going to see if they can bounce back with a better effort here today. And Boo, it can get in your head a little bit when you get shut out. You’re frustrated. You’re seeing that consecutive streak of innings you haven’t scored. And you want to get off to a great start. score early because if you don’t, you feel like it could linger into two consecutive games which no one wants to be a part of. Started after it, tried to hold up. Now a look to first and he went around. That’s ruled a swing. And that one fouled off. Runner at second. Two down. cut on and missed and it’s a strikeout and that is the inning. So they get two runs on two hits, one of them left the yard. Second inning coming up here at Wrigley. It’s the Cubs two and the Pirates nothing. on the north side of Chicago. John Chambi and Chris Singleton all set for the start of the inning. Here’s the second baseman. Nick Gonzalez, boy, back to work. Swing and a miss as he was late. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. the 02. Oh, that got away from him. And he’s going to reach on a hit by pitch to lead off the inning. Up next for the Pirates, Jack Sinski. just missed. Lifted in the air out to left half and there’s one away. batting seven catcher Joey Bart. This is Joey Bart. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Right through there for a strike. Ed Drummond, our umpire behind the plate in this one. Yeah, Boog. He’s a really fair umpire, both the pitchers and the hitters. So, standard strike zone, he’s consistent with it. And the great thing is you don’t see players question the calls too much. So, that’s a good thing in this day and age. Just missed. Fans don’t really understand the familiarity and relationship players and coaches have with umpires. I mean, you see them a lot. Yeah, B. They’re all out there trying to do their best and drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck and it’s a one hopper off the wall. Should be extra bases. Across is the runner from first and they trail by one. Well done. Drives in the run. Fast ball pretty much middle middle and that’s what you fall asleep dreaming about as a hitter. So no surprise he put a great swing on it. One out, runner at second. Jared Triolo the next to hit the other way. And that’s just foul. One out and a runner at second here in the top of the second. Swinging a miss at a slider. [Applause] Swings through that and it’s a strike out. That K is his third of the game. He had him out in front, which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this, known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. Isaiah Connor Falefa up to the plate. He’s someone that really beats up on right-handed pitching. The lefties, however, give him a little bit more trouble. Fought off foul. Please win in the dirt. [Applause] and a swing and a miss. And that’s that. So, one run on one hit, no errors, and a runner left. We go to the bottom of inning number two. It’s the Cubs two and the Pirates won. bottom half of inning number two. This is Willie Castro. Willie Castro that misses the zone. Ball one. inside. Just missed. The 20 is in for a strike. There’s the strike. the pitch. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. [Music] Fast ball is outside. [Applause] Fouled off again and it remains three and two. That’s to third. Fair ball. Now he’ll turn for second. The throw in and the bottom of the second starts with a double. Just one of those at bats you almost hate to see come to an end. Just found a way to slap that ball down the third baseline. That’s really excellent back control. And it kind of goes back to all those drills you see hitters do off the tea where it’s placed in different spots. That was just nice. Runner in scoring position. No outs. And up next for Chicago, Dansby Swanson. Hard hit to third. Connor Falefa throws to first in time. and Swanson is set down. Batting ninth, third base, Matt Shaw. Matt Shaw, the next Cub to hit. It’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. That’s off the mark. And that’s ball one. [Applause] Just missed. [Applause] And it goes just foul. Next pitch in for a strike and the count is two and two and a foul ball. He stays alive. [Music] Still two and two after the foul ball. So glad these ballparks have installed the netting to protect the fans, keep things safer all around the league. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Outside low. And now it’s three and two. got him looking. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strike out. You can’t be mad at yourself after an at bat like that one. I guarantee he’s going to check the tape on that last pitch when he gets a chance because he thought it was ball four. And he wasn’t wrong. I mean, it was a close pitch. Definitely not an easy call, but especially after a long at bat, that’ll drive you crazy getting rung up like that. So, the lineup flips over. Michael Bush now at the plate. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Man at second. Oh, no need to go right at this guy. First base is open. He can hurt you. So make him expand his zone. If he doesn’t, give him a walk. Two ground ball right side and foul ball and that misses and the count is three and one. Ian Half waiting to hit for the Cubs. Fouls one away and now three and two. Good job to fight that one off. Runner at second. Two down. Bottom half of inning number two. tapped back up the middle, tosses to first, third out, and that ends the frame. Cubs leave one, they lead it 2-1. Back here at Wrigley Field onto the third inning. To the plate now for Pittsburgh is the DH number nine. That one off the mark and that is ball one. That’s inside. That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended. Tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. Next offering is in for a strike. Dangerous spot for that slider right there. Didn’t seem to quite finish out front and get that sharp break. Tell you what, he doesn’t want to throw that pitch again. And it remains two and two. That one ripped. This one looks like trouble into second easily with a leadoff double. Got to love the resiliency he showed in that at bat. Battling with two strikes. He somehow got to that outside pitch and pulled it hard into the outfield. Not exactly what you’re supposed to do with that kind of location, but you wouldn’t know it by how the ball came off his bat. Runner in scoring position. No outs. And here’s the first baseman, Spencer Horowitz, and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. You know, these Pirates do a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. He’s only given up one run, but the starter pitch count is starting to get up there, and that might be the best news yet for this offense. And that is out of play. You know, sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage. And that might be the case today right through there. Got him. Now, five strikeouts for him on the mound. Well, I think that’s a case of overthinking right there. He got three straight fast balls. Looking in the O2 count just to pour it back. Brian Reynolds here. out in front and fouled to the left side. He’s trying for third. Pitch misses and the throw. He’s out of third. The 1-1 little chopper rolls foul. Two down. Nobody on. That one misses. Two balls, two strikes to count. Hard ground ball base knock and that keeps the inning going. Everything came together for him. I know that was a ground ball, but it was absolutely hammered through the infield. That’s not one you’re excited to get in front of if you’re an infielder. You know, they used to say, “Charge it.” Crazy. Tommy Fan, the next pirate to hit over to first and save. Well, Chris, through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. Swinging a foul straight back. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now. Doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens. Well, I think he’s trying to get a feel for where that one missed. I mean, it could have gone either way, but he looked a little shocked for a second there. On the ground right side in plenty of time to first. That’s a third out. Pirates leave one and our score remains 2-1. ready to go for the last half of the inning. So up now for Chicago in half. You know, these Cubs showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. They’re doing a good job. Swing and this one’s blasted. It’s got a chance. just missed it. Still relatively early, but with a pair of runs already on the board, the ripple effect of that high pitch count might set him up to do more damage later in this game. So, here’s Kyle Tucker now. He reached out to walk his first time. Tucker in his sixth season, 28 years old, and he’s usually in the outfield. today. He’s the DH foul ball there. Next offering is fouled back. Just misses the mark outside the zone. And that’s in the dirt. And a swing and a miss. Down on strikes. He’s notched four strikeouts now. I love to see guys compete. And I know he’s frustrated that he wasn’t able to do anything with that pitch. You see it so well, but you have to respect the upper 90s velocity. Man, it is hard to catch up to. Kelly batting for the second time. And that’s strike one. That to right. Reynolds trying to get there. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. That is the inning. here at Wrigley Field as we go to the top of the fourth. Now it’s the second baseman, Nick Gonzalez. And that skips in the dirt and another ball right now behind in the count. Two balls and no strikes. No free passes. You can’t allow that. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. In today’s game, not that many fast ball counts, but hitters still in the back of their minds. They’re looking for one. Two change up call right there. Excellent pitch selection to go with. Bunch attempt, but that goes foul. Two. Lifted in the air right field. Casey makes the grab. One down. Up next for Pittsburgh, Jack Sinsky, the next pirate to hit, fly to left his first time. And that’s in for a strike. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. Usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. Shaw throws the first in time. That’s what a good sinker is designed to do. Get a guy to roll over a little bit, hit the ball on the ground, kill some worms while you’re at it. Here’s Joey Bart now. He doubled home a run in his first AB. Foul ball. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. Next offering is in for a strike. Fights it off. You’ll see another That missed by a lot. Yeah, the count one and two. That’s foul off to the right side keeps the AB going swing and a miss. Struck him out. So he picks up his sixth strike out of the ball game and one, two, three go the Pirates and they trail it here. Two to one. And we’re back. John Chabi and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Owen Casey. Ball one there. Just missed. upstairs. And there’s the automatic. Swinging a miss. Three and two now. Full count. Three and two. drilled in the air out towards right center puts it away for the out. Now batting second base. Here’s Nico her struck out swinging his first time. Taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Highfly ball out towards left field and that gets down in the corner and he’ll pull into second safely. Well, no waiting around right there. He was ready to swing it on the first pitch. First pitch fast ball in a great spot to do some damage and he squared it up nicely. One out, runner at second. And next for the Cubs, Willie Castro. Check on the runner. Her back in on a dive. Started to swing. Held up. [Applause] Ruer breaks for third. Pitch misses. Throw to third. Save. [Applause] And another ball. Horner stands at third with one gone in the inning. And that’s in for a strike. And ball four, two aboard. Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there. Pretty much gifted him first base with a quick free pass. Two on, one out. And now it’s Dansby Swanson. Grounded out his first time. That catches the zone for a strike. Go and one. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. Usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. That just misses and it’s one and one. Runners are at the corners. One away. The shorts stop takes a ball. Tough spot right here. Couple runners on. Two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. Two on, one out. Whacked out to center field. That’s well struck. That’s back there. Makes the catch on the edge of the track. Runner tags for home. He’s in on the sack fly. It’s 3-1. Well, that’s a quality at bat right there. You know the situation. You need something in the air and deep enough. And that’s exactly what he did. Good pass to the baseball. Matt Shaw, the next Cub to hit. His first at bat was a strikeout. Just missed. Bullpen action for the Pirates. Paul Ste, the hardth throwing righty is up and loosening. Burrows also getting ready. And that one fouled off. Next offering upstairs. And a foul ball. 3-2. Two out. Runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. Michael Bush would be next if they can extend the inning. And he’s homered already, so I’m sure he’d love a chance to do some more damage here. Drilled in the air high and deep right field back there. And it’s into the bleachers. It’s out of here. He muscles that one out the opposite way. It’s 51. [Applause] That’s an impressive swing of the bat to go over the wall to the opposite field gap. And you know, there are a lot of guys that just don’t have the pop to do that. And probably just as many who don’t have the approach either. He let that ball travel and he got great extension on the follow through to drive it out of here. And the Pirates manager making his way to the mound now as he will make the move. Mitch Keller will depart. And this is one he’d like to forget. Back with a new arm after this. The left-hander on now, Andrew Heeney. He doesn’t get a lot of strikeouts compared to other relievers, so he relies on getting that soft contact and the defense doing work behind him. They’ll have to be on their toes with him on the bump. All right, let’s go back to the leadoff spot in the Cubs lineup. Here’s the Cubs leadoff man, Michael Bush. First offering and it just misses. And that one upstairs. There’s the strike and it’s two and one. No need to offer it that pitch until you get to two strikes. It’s just a low percentage of success when you want to try to go after that down and away pitch. Got the bat going too soon at strike two. Man, he really sells the change up with that arm action. Swings and misses. Couldn’t catch up to the heater, but they strike for three in the inning. Two on this two-run home run. It’s now 51. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back here at the friendly confines and the batter will be the shortstop Jared Triolo. Boy, back to work. Not a lot of people know this, but this isn’t the only Wrigley Field in MLB history. You know, when the league expanded and added the Los Angeles Angels in 1961, they played their first season at a stadium in LA called Wrigley Field, which had been the home of the minor league team of the same name. Ground ball up the middle, dives, but it kicks off his glove. No throw, and the defense comes away with nothing. Up next for Pittsburgh, man at first, nobody out. Now the third baseman, Isaiah Kiner Falefa. This one in the air right field. Casey on the move towards the line. Couldn’t get to it before it dropped. Foul missed with a change up. One ball, one strike. [Music] Swang at a highf fly ball. Well struck that one back there and that one’s gone into the bleachers. He’ll touch them all. His second of the year. It’s 53. That was one of those home runs where you really don’t know if he got enough of it off the bat. I mean, he put a good swing on it clearly, but I wouldn’t say he really got the sweet spot on the bat. The exit velo impressive, but it had all it needed for him to circle the pillows. That one hammered, but pulled fouled. Nobody out with a pair of runs across in the frame and we’re in the top of the fifth. Next pitch downstairs and a count even one and one. Can be tough to bounce back after a big home run, but nobody on, nobody out. You just have to treat it as a fresh inning. Swing and a miss as he was out front that time. battling here as he fouls it away. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Popped up foul territory behind the play. Catcher tosses the mask. settles under it. He’s there. He’s got it. And there’s one down. That was a good hard fast ball with some nice ride up in the zone right there. Hitter looked like he was on it, but I think that velocity at the end just beat him. Instead of a line drive or something hit deep, it’s a pop up and an easy out for the defense. Fouled off. He was late. Still only one out here in the inning. Misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. Movement in the Cubs bullpen. Cade Horton, the rookie right-hander, is getting loose. Rogers, a left-hander, also throwing. And a big swing and a miss. Got him. And he’s up to seven strikeouts. Well, he’s going to have some thinking to do when he leaves the ballpark after this one. That was his third strike out and this one looking obviously. So, he’s been a little overmatched. He’s got to find a way just to be more competitive up there at the plate. Ryan Reynolds getting ready to hit. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Just missed. Fast ball for a strike. One ball, two strikes. Swang in a line drive, ripped right center field. Casey makes the catch and that is that. Bucks draw a bit closer on this long ball. It’s now a 53 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show and welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the inning. So up now for Chicago in half and first offering is fouled off. You know these Cubs really impressing me with the quality of their bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work. It looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early, get him out of the game before he settles in. So, I’d say mission accomplished. Swinging a foul out of play and misses inside. swinging a ground ball and that’s just fouled and that misses off the outside edge. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. hammers that one deep left field and forget it. His 17th of the year and they tack on to their lead. It’s 6-3. That’s their third home run of the game. They’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one. They’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot. Looks like this guy was looking out over the plate, but he was ready to turn on the inside. Fast ball. So direct to the pitch. Absolutely blasted out of this ballpark. Here’s Kyle Tucker. A strike out and a walk. And that’s off the inside edge. Ball one. Always exciting to see a leadoff home run in an inning. kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in. Last half of inning number five on the corner for a strike and the count one and one. Swaging a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. Fights that one away. Still one and two. And that’s outside. Still just the second batter of the inning. And on the mount, he’s already thrown 13 pitches. They got him working hard out there. Swing and a miss. And he got him. And that’s the first out. Nice recovery after giving up the homer. Now batting. Now the Cubs four-hole hitter Carson Kelly, one for two. And that’s in the dirt and it’s one and0. Strike one. One and one. One down. Base is empty. Breaking ball inside. Two and one. This hitter’s looking for a fast ball, but I’m not sure he’s going to get one. Pitcher doesn’t have to challenge him. If he feels better about his off speed secondary stuff, then stay with it. Swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two. threw that fast ball right by him. Slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder. And it finds its way through for a hit. So, a man aboard now with one away. Now batting rightielder Owen. And the batter now Owen Casey. And there’s one thing on his mind this at bat. Getting that first hit at the big league level. [Applause] and first offering is fouled off. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. gonna really need to hang in there with that front side against this left-handed breaking ball. Just off the outside part of the plate. Just misses with that one. Sometimes you got to fight to get back into an at bat. Take some tough pitches. Even out the count. gets a piece and stays alive. Two-2 now. This to third. Boots it. Still finds a way to get off a throw. They don’t come much closer than that. Bang bang play to end the inning. Cubs get one on the solo shot and they’ve doubled up now. It’s 63. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. We’re back and they make a change to start the sixth. The new pitcher Cade Horton and he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. Now Tommy Fam both for two in this one and that one is in for a strike at 95. It’s 0 and one. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Drew Pomerance preparing to come on if needed. Kitridge getting cranked up as well. That one is absolutely belted. That’s a fair ball and it’s getting into the corner and that’s a leadoff double. Man, he just absolutely turned on that one. Ripped it down the line. Nice job of staying in his mechanics. So, digging in Nick Gonzalez. He’s 0 for one. out towards right center field. Casey sizes this one up and there’s one down. Now batting the center Jack Sinski. And now the center fielder Jack Sinsky. First pitch misses. Fam leads off second with one gone in the inning. And that drops in for a strike. line and a base hit into right. Here’s the throw to the plate. Safe. In comes the run from second and it’s 64. Comes through with the RBI. That’s a good sound coming off the bat, man. And as he connected out front and lifted into the outfield, that’s one of those swings where you just don’t even feel the ball hit the barrel. That’s a pure stroke. One down. Here’s the Pirates catcher now. Joey Bart. That one fouled off. Horton goes 6’1, 23 years old. A former first round pick in 2022 with the tying run at the plate. And we’re the top half of the six. fouled off down the right side. The O2 goes down swinging for the strike out. Slider got him for strike three. Well, take a look at the three pitch sequence here. Pretty simple in terms of putting them away at the plate. Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher, you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle. And right there, clearly he was in swing mode, but all you can do is hope to foul that off. Here’s the shortstop at the play. Jared Triolo checks over to first back safely. And that’s in there at the knees. [Music] And that one misses up and in. And one and one. Looks like he was trying to get to the front door with that curve ball. It’s definitely a finesse pitch, but it backed up a little bit on him and stayed inside. Two outs and that one is downstairs and now three and one. Isaiah Ker Falefa in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here to the right side. Her throws to first in time. Third out. So, one run in the inning on this base hit. It’s a two-run lead now at 64. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show back here at Wrigley Field. Here’s the second base, Nicoer. Chris, baseball today. So many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers. But this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. That catches the corner. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. And that one sliced foul. When you look at the elite teams in a game right now, there is going to be the slug. No question about it. But the really good offensive teams combined slug with more contact with less swing and miss. Yeah. And the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end. Swing and a miss. Struck him out and he’s registered three Ks in this one. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. Top of the strike zone. We’re seeing more fast balls in that location. Hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. Castro in the box for the third time today as he takes that one off the plate. Action in the pen down there. Paul Skins loosening up in case he’s called upon by Derek Shelton. One of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins, the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter, the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter. One down, base is empty. Up the middle, Gonzalez sends it to first. Two up, two down. Now batting the short stop, Dansby. Two down, base is empty. And up next for Chicago, Dansby Swanson. Yeah. And I figured you would get Catay into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. Not close with that one. And now it’s even one and one. The 1-1 is fouled off. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. And it’s a one, two, three inning. Three up, three down that time. Seventh inning coming up. It’s the Cubs six and the Buckos four. Here is Kinder Fa. Can’t forget the two-run shot he launched out of here in the fifth. Yeah, one of the biggest swings of the game, Boo, as he looks to make even more of an impact in this at bat right here. in the air right field. Casey pulls it in and there’s one away. Now that number nine and now the Pirates leadoff man one for three. Right through there for a strike. That one finds the zone and the count is 0 and two. And ball one. Boo. He never moved because he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. One down. Base is empty. That one the other way. Makes the grab and there’s two gone. Man, that could have been a big swing in this game. Just unlucky at a really unfortunate time right there. And now the first baseman, Spencer Horowitz, 0 for three with three strikeouts. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Highf fly ball pretty well struck out towards right center. That one carrying and it lands in the basket. A home run. He got just enough of that one. It’s 65. Just relentless. This team will not quit. A breaking ball on the inside part of the plate requires a hitter to stay really square with his mechanics. If you fly open with the front shoulder, there’s no way you keep that ball fair. An outstanding job mechanically. He deserves that home run. Two outs, nobody on. Digging in is the switch inning outfielder Brian Reynolds. Popped up Swanson. He’s got it. And that’ll end the inning. But the Bucks get one back on the solo home run. It’s now 65. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Paul Skins pretty tight game. So they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. So digging in Matt Shaw. He’s already homered in this game. Shaw swings through that one. [Music] That misses and that’s ball one. That was absolute gas. Triple digits on the gun. It’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by. And that’s in the dirt. [Applause] Spoils that one and it remains two and two. keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Cut on and miss. Struck him out. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. Oh, that’s a curveball that people like to describe as a hammer or Uncle Charlie, and you can see why. It’s not a looping slow curve. He throws it hard and it gets plenty of bite on the end. Rip towards third to first. Two up, two down. Come on. Now batting leftielder Ian. Two outs. Base is empty. Now it’s the switchhitting outfielder Ian Hap. He’s already homerred here in this one. First pitch just misses and he takes a strike. That one in triple digits. Two down, nobody on here. The bottom of the seventh. That one way outside and it’s two and two. Registers the punch out and hits 101. Three up, three down for the Cubs. They lead it. However, it’s 6-5. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Drew Pomez hasn’t pitched in the last three days. Number 45 Drew Pome Tommy Fan digs in now. Left fielder Tommy Bam. And that skips in the dirt. The Cubs bullpen with some action. Omar Hakez up and throwing for manager Craig Councel looking to get the tying run on base. Late with the swing there. And a count one and two. Little early on that fast ball. I’m sure the pitcher taking a note. Look for an off speed pitch on this next one. Foul ball still a one and two count. and a foul ball. He stays alive and a one-two. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. That one misses. Now two and two. This one driven deep way back there and it’s gone. We are tied. [Music] He made him pay for that one. It’s 66. He kept swinging and it paid off. Well, that was a battle, Boo. And he just kept taking his cuts. Finally squared one up. [Applause] What an incredible momentum swing on that home run, Boo. I mean, it’s late in the game. Just barely stayed fair and it ties up the ball game. Impressive. So, it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. Now, it’s the second baseman, Nick Gonzalez. That one’s upstairs. Paul one, lays out. Oh, it’s off his glove. No throw. And he’s on at first. Always feels amazing getting a job done when the team needs you to come through. It’s just bigger than your own individual stats. That’s one of those you classify as just too hot to handle. Hit it on the screws and it couldn’t be fielded cleanly. But you can’t really blame the defense in that case. And now let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases. The go-ahead run aboard at first. Nobody out. Swing and a miss as he was late that time with two strikes. may see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Just misses there. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get into scoring position. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again with a go-ahead run at first and we’re in the top of the eighth just outside. Ball two. That’s a really good take. Hacks and misses. It’s a strike out. Typically that high fast ball if it’s close to the top of the strike zone a hitter if he’s prepared for it can get to it. But that one just had that little jump at the end which indicates there’s a good spin rate on it and it didn’t decrease in velocity as that hitter’s internal clock would expect it to. And that’s why you see the swing and miss. Here’s the catcher to hit. Joey Bart three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. And fouled off. [Music] That one missed. That’s down and in. Way to lay off that pitch down. Off the mark there. Three balls and a strike. Chris, with that distraction and the speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter’s count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. Fouls one away and now three and two. One away. Tie game. Go ahead run stands at first. The 3-2 is outside and it’s ball four. And with two outs, the go-ahead run is at second base. Well, a breaking ball in that 3-2 count. Kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. Here comes the manager out of the Cubs dugout and he will make a move to the pen. Drew Pomerance out of the game. And it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. Now a right-handed arm out of the bullpen. Andrew Kitridge. Should be a good first matchup for him here. He’s been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season. They’ve had a lot of trouble squaring him up. Now a pinch hitter coming on for the Pirates, Andrew McCutchen. And this is a big bat in this ball game. rolled softly, but that goes foul. Just missed. You don’t want to get beat by a fast ball in and he spits on that one. Ball to strike. Tap foul at the plate. And a swing and a miss. And two away now. Nice work there to get the strike out. And that’s a big second out. I’ll tell you, this home crowd will be fired up. They can get out of this and leave that go ahead run stranded in scoring position. This is a big moment in this game. At the plate for Pittsburgh, Isaiah Ker Falefa. Yeah, that’s fouled off. slashed foul down the right side. That’ll hook off into the seats. [Music] That one not close. Now one and two. Well, if he’s going to do something special right here, it’s going to have to happen with two strikes. Got him looking. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. He’s in a tough spot. Had to make a great pitch. Did it. Got the strike out. Gets out of the jam. Clearly, he’s happy with those results. back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Number 47. Well, he’s been a really tough guy to take deep this season. You usually have to string some hits together in order to get to him. Lever Pagarero. He’s the new shortstop as he comes in as a defensive replacement here. number 31 tied at six. And here’s the DH for the Cubs. Kyle Tucker. A walk and a pair of strikeouts. Liner. And this could be trouble. Safe at second with nobody out. And that double has the go-ahead run and scoring position. Well, that’s how you respond. leadoff man comes up, gets into scoring position. Now, there are several ways that they can get this run across. Substitution now at second base. Entering is the pinch runner, Pete Crow Armstrong. So, the go-ahehead run is into scoring position. Carson Kelly the next to hit. Moved to second and he’s back in easily. And that one fouled off. And that is out of play. Go ahead run in scoring position. Nobody out. swings and misses. Struck him out. Oh, that slider down and away. It’s just kind of a slow death. With two strikes you’re looking to protect and halfway to the plate, you know you’ve committed and you know you’re going to have no chance of touching it. Tell you what, sometimes you just have to tip your cap. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. Casey now at the plate, 0 for three with two fly outs and a ground out. And that’s outside one and0. As a pitcher, you know the runner on second is ready to push things with this speed. A base hit is probably going to be a big run. So, you really have to execute on the mound. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. One out. The go-ahead run is at second. Swinging a ground ball up the middle. Throws to first in time. Now batting second base Nico. Nico her will come up to hit. Known for his late inning heroics. in there and it’s 0 and one. All impressed that he went right after him on that first pitch. That’s the key. Try to get ahead in the count and you can play around a little bit more as the at bat expands. swings and misses. 0 and two now. Big time jam right there. I hate it as a hitter, but standing in center field, you can’t help but chuckle a little bit. Good job to fight that one off. Well, he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit, but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs, you’ve got to expand the zone. He’s capable of going out there and doing damage with it. Couldn’t hit the fast ball at the knees. One left for the Cubs. Score remains tied. Six apiece. We go to the ninth. Now it’s the DH number nine. N this guy, a player that if he gets on base, has the ability to really be aggressive getting around the base paths. Kitridge back to work and that’s downstairs and outside. It’s good speed at the top of the order here. You want to get it on, see if you can get a stolen base, maybe get around the bases and pick up a run. Hard ground ball for a base. So, a man on base to start the inning. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Spencer Horowitz, the next Pirate to a line and there’s a hit coming home. He’ll score and the Pirates take the lead. Oh, that bat had a lot riding on it. Certainly a pivotal swing of the bat in this ball game. That was a thing of beauty. He may have been a little behind the pitch, but by getting that barrel into the hitting zone early on in his swing, he was able to meet it and still shoot a line drive down the line and left. Runner in scoring position, no outs. So next to the plate for Pittsburgh, Ryan Reynolds. And that’s outside. [Applause] And that drops in for a strike. Movement in the Cubs bullpen. Caleb Thebar. The lefty looks to be getting himself ready. Rogers warming up as well. This one in the dirt. Swing and a pop off in foul ground. has room and he makes the catch. [Applause] Now batting leftielder Tommy Fam. Here’s the left fielder Tommy Fam. Up the middle. Swanson slings to first in time. Good armside run to that same side hitter right there. Very difficult to put that ball in the air or get through it. Just bores in on the hands. Nick Gonzalez the next pirate to hit. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season. So they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. Knee high. That’s in for a strike. One-run game here in the top of the ninth. Next offering is fouled back. Next pitch misses way outside. in the dirt. Nice job behind the plate there. On the ground. Oh, look at the stop. Jumps, throws, and very nicely done for the out. But the Pirates strike on this runscoring double and this is now a 76 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Back now and on the mound, the closer Dennis Santana. Definitely a guy that pounds the strike zone, makes hitters earn their way on base, and rarely gets in trouble because of free passes. Well, one-run game. And now the center fielder, Willie Castro. Castro. First pitch. Doesn’t find the zone. And that’s in for a strike. fought off foul. One-run game, bottom nine. Lifted in the air, right center field. Sinsky settles under this one, pulls it down, and he makes the catch. And there’s one down. That’s a big first out right there. And that changes things. Yeah, you can kind of see how just the hope and optimism is shrunk a little bit, but they got a couple more outs to work with. They got to find a way to get a runner on and get one around the bases. [Music] Tap foul at the plate. Crowd locked in right now. One-run game here in the ninth. 0 and two now. Headed towards the corner and it hops over the wall for an automatic double. The automatic double kind of feels like enjoying cruise control in your car. Boo. You don’t need to keep the pedal down as you cruise into second base. Just no worries in the world. You know what? He put a really good swing on that one. Matt Shaw, the next Cub to hit. That’s in for a strike. Oh, they’re applying pressure, quality at bats, quality swings right now. And see this offense doing it one man to the next. Showing a lot of fight right now and they’re making it difficult for the back end of this bullpen to close out this game. So, the tying run at second outside and it’s one and one. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. Trying to keep the game alive here in the bottom of the ninth. [Applause] Out of the ground to third. Connor Falefa throws to first in time. Now only one out remaining. Well, there’s a lot writing on that at bat right there. Nice job of the pitcher to bear down, make the pitch, get the ground ball. Excellent piece of work. Here’s the Cubs leadoff man, Michael Bush, trying to deliver as the hero. And things could change quickly here with one swing. Right through there for a strike. Goodness. I think he just took the best pitch he’s going to see in this at bat. You don’t get many like that in that location. And I don’t know if you take that pitch against any pitcher out there on the mound. And a fast ball misses outside for a ball and the count is one and one. [Applause] Line drive and this might be trouble. Runner around third on his way to the plate. He’ll score and they’ve tied it. It’s a two out double and the winning run is at second base. Such great concentration. Everybody on their feet knowing that you can come through with a good swing. And there he doesn’t try to do too much. Ian Hat will hit next. Clips the corner. 0 and one. trying to send this extra innings. Swing and a miss. 0 and2. More and more guys are looking to slog regardless of the count and this situation will keep a close eye on his approach. 0 and two now. Checks his swing. Now would appeal to third. No, he held up. The winning run on second base. Bows it off. Still one and two. Half lays off. [Applause] Got him looking for the strike out. That’s the third out and we’re headed to extras. Cubs pick up a run on the RBI double and we’re deadlocked here at 77. Major League Baseball is on the show. We’re back and on the mound is the closer Omar PZ and this is the best way to make your major league debut. No one on base. Yeah, you’re already going to be a little nervous out there. So, I think it’s a nice job by the skipper to get him in. Go ahead run on base. Now, here is Jack Sinski. Well, it’s kind of deflating. You blow that lead in the bottom of the ninth. So, here’s a new opportunity. He hit the reset button, try to get some more runs and then close it out in the bottom half of this one. Check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. Swinging a foul out of play. Got him. One away. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. Joey Bart, the next Pirate to hit. And there’s a ball. Two balls, no strikes to count. And you got to wonder with first base open, one out, is he going to get a pitch to hit? Swings and misses. And it’s two and one. One out. The go-ahead run is in second here in the top half of the tent. Well, you put good velocity in the head of the hitter. He’s got to get it ready early and then change speeds. Keep him off balance. That’s the goal. Now, this is in the air down the line. Brings it in. Runner tags and we’ll move up to third. Excellent play out there and he does it in a huge spot. That wall, it can very easily jar the ball loose when you bang into it. So that could have been a really different outcome. So up next, Leo Pagarro came into the game on defense. So his first trips to the plate here. Ball one there. Two down. Go ahead run in scoring position. Right through there for a strike. [Music] That’s ball. Two balls, one strike. swing and a chopper out to short and he beats the throw. Shows off the wheels right there. An infield single. Boo. That’s a frustrating way to fall behind in this one as the infield single drives in the run. And sometimes all you have to do is put the ball in play and you give your teammate a chance to hurry home. Isaiah Ker Falefa digs in now. Line drive, base hit, and out to a board. Back-to-back singles. You’ll often hear the phrase short to it, long through it. And that’s a great example of it right there. got the barrel in the hitting zone early, squared it up with the welltimed swing and came away with a beautiful line drive into center field. Now here is number nine and the first pitch is drilled in the air out to center and that is that one run in the inning, but they leave two. Last chance to even things up. We head to the bottom of inning number 10. It’s the Pirates eight and the Cubs seven. Now back here in extras and a new pitcher on the mound in the bottom half of the inning, Carmen Majinski. And I can’t imagine any save is an easy one. You’re holding a small lead on the scoreboard and you know those hitters are going to give you the best at bats. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Cro Armstrong getting ready to hit. That misses the zone and that is ball one. Yeah, that’s fouled off. So, the tying run at second right side. Reynolds makes the grab. Runner tags at second and the throws offline. Safe at third. Carson Kelly now at the plate. Fly ball to the outfield for a sack fly. Soft ground ball to the right side. Find a hole. He can attack this a few ways, but the one thing he can’t do is strike out down the middle for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. Squirts away a little bit. Nothing doing. Count moves to one and one. [Music] Top of the zone and it’s called a strike. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one two. Don’t miss in the zone because that’s where you get hurt. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Cubbies with only one out left. Big strikeout right there and that kind of takes the pressure off the defense a bit. Infield was in. So now they can move back, give themselves more time on a grounder to make a play. A lot more ways to work out of this and strand that runner at third now. So it’s their last chance in this one. And now the right fielder Owen Casey. And the first pitch misses for ball one. [Applause] And that one fouled off. lifted to left and this should do it. And he’s got it. Ball game and the Pirates strand the tying run on base to win it. I’d say you’re lying if you say you don’t feel a fivegame losing streak. This W definitely helps them relax a little bit and take some of the pressure off from it going to a six, seven, or even an eightgame losing streak. And a final 8-7. A oneun extra inning win for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami. Thanks for joining us.
