🔴LIVE 🔴New York Yankees VS St Louis Cardinals/August 16/ Major League Baseball/MLB THE SHOW 25

First pitch. Yeah, Boo. Some players love this heat. They feel like there’s no fear attacking the baseball. Don’t have to worry about cold days and getting jammed. But I tell you what, for me, it was always about hydration because I could cramp up. And you have to make sure that you stay up on your fluids. And it’s not just when the game starts. This is something that you have to do days in advance if you’re someone that’s prone to cramping. It’s the New York Yankees taking on the St. Louis Cardinals. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. Just about ready to roll. And for the Cardinals here this afternoon, it’s Miles Michael. And Chris, he’s a guy that gets better when things get tough. Well, that whip is just below the league average. And that’s a good thing in this case, not allowing too many base runners. So, on most days, he’s going to go out there and compete and put his team in a position to win. And I expect to see that from him. him in this one today. Trent Gisham the leadoff batter as he looks at ball one. That one at 95 missed up top. Two and0. Breaking ball in there for a strike. [Applause] on the ground right side and it goes just fouled. [Music] Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. chases the change up in the dirt. Catcher has it. Fires to first. Got him. One away on the strike out. This guy will throw any pitch in any count. 3-2. He goes off speed. Gets the out. [Applause] And stepping in for the Yankees, Ben Rice. And first offering is fouled off. Hey, by the way, Chris. Yes, John. Happy birthday. Oh, thank you. One out. Base is empty. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Well, you could tell he wasn’t expecting that ball to break back in on him. He may have been looking for something away. Maybe something soft, but that slider on the inside corner absolutely froze him. Aaron Judge stands in now and watches strike one. But why the kick the pitch fouled off left side. Pretty standard high 02 fast ball right there. If you’re smart, you’ll look for something down in the zone, but not too far. Don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt. In plenty of time to first. Third out and that ends the frame. Yanks held in check. Now the Cardinals will see what they can do. There’s no score. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back here with my pal Singi. And starting for the Yankees, the right-hander Luis Heel. Well, you know, this guy wants to be better than that. I mean, the ERA is bloated. He understands that he’s got to put his team in a better position to win ball games. And at this point, you have to forget about your own individual stats and you have to go out there and attack and try to get that W. And if you do that, you’ll look up and most likely that ERA will have dropped over time. Lars Nbar the leadoff batter as he looks at ball one and a swing and a miss there. There’s a certain point where you have to commit to what you think you see and he guessed wrong right there. Nasty slider with just terrific bite at the end. [Music] Outside corner got him looking now. The number two hitter Mason Win. Ball one. No strikes. And another ball. Swing and a fly ball. Well struck left field. Drops in for a hit. Couldn’t run it down. Safely into second. He’s got a double. That’s it. This was a really nice swing. Didn’t quite get enough behind it to get it out of here, but once it got over his head in left field, it was extra bases all the way. And here’s the first baseman, Alec Burlson. And a fast ball misses outside for a ball. Ball one. Swanging a foul back and that’s out of play. Alex man at second out to short. Vulpi over to first now. Two away. Now we take a check of the St. Louis Cardinals lineup. This group was shut out their last game, so we’re going to see if they can bounce back with a better effort here today. And Boo, it can get in your head a little bit when you get shut out. You’re frustrated. You’re seeing that consecutive streak of innings you haven’t scored. And you want to get off to a great start, score early because if you don’t, you feel like it could linger into two consecutive games, which no one wants to be a part of. dives and he can’t hang on. Gets it there in time though and they do get the third out. The inning is over. So, one left for the Cardinals. Scoreless after one. Back here in St. Louis. Top of the second and here comes Bellinger. Cody Bellinger. Bellinger is an interesting example when you talk about scouting and development. Oh, this is deep to left center. Way back there on its way. Gone. His 23rd of the year. It’s one- nothing. He only needed one swing to square it up. Not wasting any time in that at bat. Boo. Aggressive and it paid off. It’s like he’s playing whiffle ball up there. And that’s typically not the easiest way to hit a home run. To the slight opposite field into the gap, man. Making it look easy, that’s for sure. Jazz Chisum Jr. Now that one’s in there. 0 and one. Well, you just got to delete it. You give up that leadoff home run. Go back to work. Focus on this next batter. Chisum in his fifth season, 27 years old. And they went out and made a trade for him last season. Next offering is fouled back and that’s way high. Yeah, the count one and two. He really committed to that fast ball up at the top of the zone. He knows that if he makes a mistake in the zone, it gets hit hard by a power guy like this. That’s a nice miss right there. The one two gets a piece and stays alive. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Misses outside and the count’s even at two. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. Smoked on the ground a second gets it to first. So it was a long battle at the plate but they still managed to get the outp. Here’s the shorts stop at the plate. Anthony Vulpi. This has been a career year for him when it comes to driving in runs. That one inside and that is ball one. He’s great hitting the ball. all the other way and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. Patrick Johnson calling the balls and strikes. Pretty standard zone for Johnson. Sometimes he might get a little jumpy, a little excited and expand the zone, but usually you at least feel like the pitcher on the mound is earning it. And that’s important because you got to make players earn it. Fast ball for a strike. Now two and one. What about some non nos? Like you can’t call the umpire blue the way you do in little league or high school, right? Yeah. Even in the minor leagues, you’ll learn quickly uh you call the umpire blue, you better learn his name. And uh that’s just part of being a professional player and even a major league player. Walker pulls it in on the run. Those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. Jason Dominguez at the plate now. That’s ball one. Two outs. Base is empty. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. He wasn’t able to elevate it, but he put a great swing on it. right on time, good balanced approach, and just blasted it through the infield. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So, we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. There’s Ryan McMahon now. First offering and it just misses. [Music] Fouled off to the right. Come on, Miles. This one chopped to first. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. The Yanks do get one on the solo homer. It’s now a one- nothing ball game. Bottom of the second. Here’s Nolan Gorman taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Heel back to work. Swinging a foul straight back. That one ripped but foul. 0 and2 now and that’s too high. His understanding of the strike zone very impressive. That was a very close 02 fast ball. I just don’t know how you take that. That misses the zone. And now two balls and two strikes. Fights it off. You’ll see another up the middle. Vulpi throws it to first in time and quickly one away in the second. Batting six right Jordan. So digging in Jordan Walker. Come on, Jordan. Rolled softly, but that goes foul. Here’s a high-fly ball out to center. Gisham settles under it, brings it in, and there are two outs. batting seven. Thomas Sajay digs in now. Up and in. And it’s one and0. Highfly ball on that one. Curling foul down the right side. And that’s outside. Back to back breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you, that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So, I think the confidence level is raised right here. Two outs. Just missed. [Applause] [Applause] And that’s in there at the knees. Cut on and miss. Struck him out. And a nice inning of work there as he sets him down one, two, three. Redbirds down quietly and it remains one- nothing. back here at Bush Stadium. And now the right fielder, Jose Cabayro. Cabo. [Music] Close one. Doesn’t get the call. Ball one and a foul ball. And this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. flares it into the outfield and foul ball. Swag and a miss. Struck him out and he’s registered three Ks in this one. We’re going to take a look at the pitch sequence of that at bat. And the thing to notice are the pitch locations. Every single one of them on the edges of the strike zone. And as a hitter, that can be pretty frustrating because you don’t expect a pitcher to be able to make quality pitches one after another like that. And so those are tough spots to do damage. And a great demonstration of pitch command. And it got him a punch out that time. Gisham batting with one down. Takes the strike. Just missed. One ball, one strike. Check swing and he went and it’s one and two. One ball, two strikes upstairs. line drive and that should be extra bases around first heading for two and that’s a two bagger now batting really good swing right there he got a pitch that he knew he could handle allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws One out, runner at second. Now here is Ben Rice. Just off the outside edge and that’s ball one. Runner at second here. One gone. just missed. He looks more focused at the plate and working the count after that first at bat strikeout. Man at second. Tulo and it’s ball three. Fast ball for a strike. and there’s a rocket into the outfield coming home. He’ll score easily. Well, when you fall behind in the count, you’ve got to come into the zone and then guys have a better chance of hitting the ball hard like he did right there. Man at second with one away. And up next for New York, Aaron Judge. And that’s downstairs ball one. Judge enjoyed success at the major league level right away. He hit 52 home runs as a rookie, breaking Mark Magcguire’s record and became the first Yankee to win rookie of the year since some guy named Derek Jeter. Next offering is in for a strike. [Applause] Judge rips that one, Carous. Two down. Not fooled at all right there. He was clearly all over it. But sometimes you hit it too hard and right at someone. You’re looking for one of those bloop hits to get a knock sometimes. Here comes Cody Bellinger. He’s already homerred here in this one. Swinging a foul out of play. He swings and crushes one deep on its way back there. Gone. It’s a belly bomb. Another homer. His second home run of the game. And they add a pair. It’s 4 nothing. That was blasted. Absolutely. No doubt off the bat. That’s as big as it gets right there. You take advantage of a mistake. That is an ultimate. Here it is. Watch it. I’m going to jog around the bases. Two outs, nobody on. Here’s the second base, Jazz Chisum Jr. And that’s way high. And that’s ball one. Well, it might be a night game, but it’s pretty hot out there. And I don’t have to tell you, partner, you’re sweating pretty good over there. Makes this long inning that he’s grinding through out there a little extra taxing. And that’s in for a strike. Two gone, base is empty, but three runs across. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. Next offering upstairs. Swing and a miss. That’s downstairs and outside. Recognized that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. Got him. He’s notched four strikeouts now, but they strike for three in the inning. Two on this two-run home run. It’s now a four nothing ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back here in St. Louis as we go to the last of the third. Here’s the catcher, Pedro Pah. Just missed. That one finds a corner and one and one. And that is out of play. Missed with a change up. Two and two. And that’s down and away. Caught him looking for the K. Well, just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast ball right there. And I don’t think he was taking it, thinking it might be a cold ball or anything. I just think he was flat out frozen. Did not expect that location in my opinion. The batter now Victor Scott bunting for a hit and that’s just fouled and he drops it down the third baseline. Whips it to first on the run. It’s there and that’s a great play. Now batting leftielder Lars Newbar will hit next. Let off the game with a strike out. Let’s go St. Louis. Come on St. Louis. [Music] And that one a little bit high. Good eye. All one. No strike. Next offering is fouled back. And now two balls in a strike. Line drive. And that should be extra bases around first and hustling for second. He’s there. It’s a two out double all over that one right there. Pitch was in and off the plate. So hard to do anything with a pitch in that location, but somehow he got the barrel to it and hit it well. Pretty amazing. Could be a chance here for them to start clawing back into this ball game. And stepping in is the speedy Mason Win. Doubled his first time. And that misses. And that is ball one. St. Louis. And that one wrapped foul. Runner at second. Two down here in the last half of the third. in the dirt but kept close. [Applause] Man on second, two down and a swing and a miss. He can live up in the zone all game if hitters will chase it. That’s just too much velocity. Hitters got to look down in the zone. Still two and two after the foul ball. Two outs and one in scoring position. Come on. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. The Cards leave one. They’re on the short end of a four nothing score. And we’re back out of the fourth. Now it’s the shortstop. Anthony Vulpi. Cardinal. And that is in for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. Action in the St. Louis bullpen. Sunny Gray, the veteran right-hander, appears to be loosening up. Number 35, a hardthrowing right-hander up as well. And he’ll one. Well, he hasn’t quite settled in out there. Four runs in three innings. He’s going to have to have some quick one, two, three innings to pitch deep into this ball game. He goes down looking. Well, just excellent location on that inside fast ball. Really locked him up. And it’s a hitter. It’s not typically what you’re looking for. You’re trying to protect away and then in. So, you can be a little bit tardy with two strikes. It’s hard to tell if he was fooled or if he thought it would be called a ball, but either way, that’s a really nice pitch. And the batter now, Jason Dominguez. Base is empty, one away. Top half of inning number four. Swing and a miss. Chased it out of the zone. Sharp grounder that’s through for a base hit. So a man aboard now with one away. Now batting third base Ryan back in trouble. Boo. And it’s just been like this for him most of the game. They’ve been all over him since his first pitch. And I think he’s got a very short leash right now. Really needs to lock it down here. Brian McMahon steps to the plate. He’s 0 for one on the inside corner for a strike. Swaying at a ball popped in the air. [Music] Two away now. Now batting right fielder Jose Cababayro. Jose Cababayro getting ready to hit. His first at bat was a strikeout. That one’s in there. Strike one. Dominguez the runner at first with two gone. Check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. Cut on and missed. And it’s a strikeout. And that is the inning. One hit, one left. We’re midway in the fourth. The Yankees four and the Cardinals nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. John Chami and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Alec Burlson. Ripped to short go and he can’t come up with it. Now batting designated hitter Ivon Herrera. So a man at first. Now here is Ivan Herrera. And a good fast ball to start him off. That’s strike one. Nobody out. Runner at first. That’s off the mark. And now it’s even. One and one. [Music] And that one ripped into right. Caviierro makes the catch. One away. Here’s the third baseman, Nolan Gorman. Grounded out. His first time up. Nolan Gorman in there for a strike at the top of the zone. Man at first, one away. And that’s in the dirt. Oh, he brings it down. Nice play. There’s one. What a double play that was. Inning over. One error in the inning, but nothing more. We played four. The Yankees four and the Cardinals nothing. New pitcher for the Cardinals, Sunny Gray. Still pretty early in the ball game. So, this bullpen has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs, kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him. Now, it’s Trent Gisham to the plate. One for two. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter Gray. More than a 100 career wins on the mound. A former first round pick back in 2011. [Music] Got him swinging. There we go. Up next. And now it’s going to be Ben Rice. Slapped foul. [Applause] Let’s do it. And a foul ball. One down. Base is empty. Pitch misses there. And that’s ball two. fouls it back with two strikes and it remains two and two. We got a full count. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. Twins and misses. It’s a strike out. He notches strikeout number 150 this season. Very strong coming out of the pin so far as he punches out the first two batters he’s faced in this one. Getting straight to work. Man, it’s talked about a lot, but relievers are just so electric these days. These aren’t fun at bats if you’re a hitter. And I’m so glad I’m retired. Judge in the box here. Lets that one go for a ball and Judge spoils that one. Two down. Nobody on. Swing and a drive deep right field. Ranging back towards the wall. Tries to make the play, but it’s fouled on the ground and it goes just foul. Swing and a pop off in foul ground. He’s got it. And that’ll end the inning. One, two, three go the Yankees, but they’re in front. Four nothing. Back here in St. Louis, we head to the bottom of the fifth. Now on for St. Louis, Jordan Walker. Walker. Heel back to work in there at the knees. Strike one. You know, these Cardinals, to put it bluntly, need to put together more competitive at bats, and I don’t think they’ve lived up to their own expectations at the plate. They really haven’t worked many deep counts or long at bats. And that’s fine if you’re having a lot of success, but at this point, I think it’s time to make an adjustment. Hit in the air right field. Cabierro. And there’s one down. What was that? Now batting second. Now it’s the second baseman Thomas and Jay-Z went down on strikes his first time through. Hard on the ground to first and he takes it himself for the out. The offense needs to start showing some fight against this starter. He’s doing his thing out there. They’re going to have to push back at some point and make him work a little bit harder. Now it’s going to be Pedro Pahes. He’s 0 for one. First pitch just misses and there’s a strike. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Looking sharp just a strike away from five shut out innings. Runs it up to 96 to record the punch out. And down in order go the Cardinals. They’re down four nothing. Leading off. Here’s Cody Bellinger. And the way he’s going in this one, we’ve been waiting for his spot to come around again. All right, listen everyone. Stop what you’re doing right now. This guy’s got two home runs already. Now he’s going for number three. This guy who grew up in big league clubouses. It’s got to be a nice feeling, Sigy, when your father played in the big leagues and he passes down all that wisdom. Swings through that one for strike two. I can only imagine the comfort level of being in the ballpark for those kids who are fortunate enough to have a dad that played in the big leagues, them being on the baseball field. For some, it’s pressure. For them, they feel that they are right at home. fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two [Music] foul ball left side. He’ll see another inside and the count one and two. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You could tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. Swing and a liner. Base hit out into right center field. Now he’ll turn for second. The throw in. Pulls in with a double. Third hit for him today. Showed a lot of fight with two strikes in that AB. Nice line drive to the pull side right there, but he didn’t spin off of it. That’s the key. You still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Jazz Chisum Jr. stepping in now for the Yankees. In for a strike, went with the sweeper. You know, these Yankees digging into their numbers. Have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. They have five extra base hits on the stat sheet so far. And that tells me they’re seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well. Man at second. Fought off foul. With all those extra base hits, it’s easy to think we’re going to see that trend continue the rest of the game. They seem to be really locked in at the plate. Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. way inside and that hit him. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. First and second, no outs. And next for New York, Anthony Vulpi bowl for two in this one. St. Louis. A short stop. Takes a ball. Next offering in there for a strike. And it’s a ball and a strike. First and second, no outs. And we’re the top half of the sixth. [Music] and strike two. So far, all we’ve seen in this at bat are fast balls. Look for him to slow it down right here ahead in the count. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Got him swinging on that pitch away to finish him off, but everything early in the at bat was in tight. Really challenged him in there with some competitive pitches. not letting him get his hands extended, but of course that eventually opens up the outside part of the plate and he just wasn’t able to adjust. So up next, Jason Dominguez. He’s two for two and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Two on, one out. And that’s off the inside edge. One and one. Got the bat going too soon. It’s strike two. Foul ball still a one and two count. On the ground to the left and foul ball. One out. Runners at first and second. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another pitcher having a pretty tough time getting that swing and miss. Third foul ball in a row. Swing and a slow roller up the middle and he knocks it down to the pitcher covering but it’s off target. They can’t make the play. Hey, whatever works, right? Doesn’t have to be impressive. Good bad ball hitting right there. Just kind of threw the barrel at the ball trying to protect with two strikes and sometimes it works out well for you. Now the third baseman, Ryan McMahon. Right through there for a strike. One out. Base is full. Next pitch is downstairs. And that one fouled off. had a swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. Top of the strike zone. We’re seeing more fast balls in that location. Hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. So, they’re all loaded up. Cabierro now at the plate who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Bellinger at third. Chisum at second. Dominguez on at first with two down. Here’s a rip to short, but he’s there for the third out and the Yankees leave him loaded. But they lead it four to nothing. back here at Bush Stadium. Bottom of the sixth inning and stepping in for the Cardinals. Victor Scott singing, “You got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively.” I mean, watching him track balls in the outfield, it is beautiful. And a strike in there. And I would say that most great defensive outfielders, it’s kind of natural. There is some work that you can do to it uh to improve your game, but ultimately you either have it or you don’t. That one hammered center field back there. Gone onto the grass hill for a homer. He’ll circle the bases. It’s his sixth home run of the season. And they’re chipping away. It’s 4-1. [Applause] Just an excellent swing all the way around and it had that sound coming off the bat that gets everyone’s attention. Got a pitch to drive short to the baseball. Squared it up and the backspin carried it out of here. Tap foul at the plate. swing and a highf fly ball. Pretty well struck right field. Cabierro going back on this one onto the track and he makes the catch. Batting the short stop, Mason Win. And the batter will be the shortstop, Mason Win. He’s someone that you might not describe as having elite level speed, but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game. First pitch misses. Boo. This guy’s definitely a plus runner. But what I love about him is that he goes all out every single time. Never takes a break. It’s guys like that, even though they don’t have the elite speed, the fact that they’re consistent with it, they make moves on the base paths. Little bit high. Three balls, no strikes. And that one is inside and it’s ball four. Pretty easy walk right there. Last pitch wasn’t even much to think about. One down. And here is Alec Burlson. You have to be careful throwing and breaking pitches even in an O count. He loves going after the off speed stuff and he’s really good at hitting it. Now, these guys definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap, but you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. Fouls one off out of play back to our left. And that misses. And the count is one and one. Yankees up by three. Ground ball right side. Could be two. Dulpi at second for one. Back to the pitcher covering. It’s a double play. Nicely done. And that’ll do it. But not before they answer back with a solo home run. It’s now a 4-1 ball game. You’re dialed into the show. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound. number 35. [Music] So the batter now will be Trent Gisham. One for three fast ball for a strike at 95. Next offering misses and that’s ball one. St. Louis and a seed into center. That’s a base hit. So a runner aboard to start the inning. Now batting Ben Rice the next to hit on the ground to the right side and that’s just fouled. Gisham gets his lead at first with nobody out. That’s off the inside corner and that’s ball one. Movement in the bullpen for the Cardinals. Andre Grano, the rookie right-hander, is getting loose. Ley warming up as well. The 1-1. This one lifted in the air left field. Nukebar drifts towards it and out number one on the grab. Now batting first base Aaron Judge. It’s Aaron Judge now. 0 for three in this one. Well, he’s always a threat. Even if this guy is 0 for three for the night with three strikeouts, he can come up that fourth time and do damage because he’s that good. [Music] And the first pitch misses for ball one. Come on, St. Louis. And another ball. St. Louis. That’s ball three. That pitch gets the corner and the count is three and one and ball four to a board. His ability to draw walks has been something that’s been part of his career since day one. Bellinger. Bellinger up to hit. Three for three. He’s got a double and a pair of home runs. Come on, St. Louis. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. [Music] St. Louis. That clips the corner. That one catches the zone. Now he’s in a one-two hole. Get out. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. Rounds third headed for the plate now. A long throw home. It’s offline. The run comes in and they lead by four. Really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat. Not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play. That’s a team at bat right there. Nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep. Two on, one out. Here’s the second baseman, Jazz Chisum Jr. First pitch and he just misses. Traffic on the bases with one already in here in the top half of inning number seven. Splits the plate and the count even one and one. Well, we call that keyhole. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. That’s down and in. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. Runners at first and second with one gone. And there’s a foul ball. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. Three and two now. Caught a break right there. Pretty good pitch on the outside corner. And that’s a base hit. And they stop him at third. So base is loaded with one away. Couple of singles back to back. Nice line drive to the pull side. Met it out front, but just stayed through it nice enough and ripped it into the outfield. Anthony Vulpi stepping in now for the Yankees. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out. Late swing fouled all. delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. with a short stop. Takes a ball. [Music] Stays alive. Base is loaded. One away. Fouled off. And they’ll do it again. The next pitch misses and the count is even. Two and two. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. Got him swinging. Nothing happening on the bases though. Oh, tough night at the dish. punching out for the third time right there. He just hasn’t looked very comfortable at the plate. A little unsure of his timing right now. Not picking up the spin and location of these pitches. He’ll have some adjustments to make at the plate. Jason Dominguez three for three with three singles. Off the mark there. One and0. Get me out. Two outs and a count one and two. [Applause] And that one missing low. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Strike him out to third. Gorman. They get the force. They limit the damage here, but the RBI single pushes across a run. It’s now a 51 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball on the show and we’re back and now it’s Ivon Herrera. The Cardinals in striking distance but have some work to do. Boo. It starts with the laid-off man. Need a good at bat out of him right here. That misses the zone. Ball one. Definitely a frustrating day for the offense, but when they look at it, this guy’s had his best stuff. been painting the corners, working on the edges, and changing speeds. Just a difficult one when you tip your cap. That one missed. Activity in the bullpen for the Yankees. Tim Hill getting loose out there for Aaron Boone. Warren the right-hander also getting loose. And that one is lifted in the air. Cabierro and it’s caught for the out. Now batting third base manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Luis Heel done for the night and a nice effort out of him. No doubt. New arm coming on. We’ll be back for that in a moment. New pitcher for the Yankees, Will Warren. and he’s got a nice lead to work with. So, he should come in throwing strikes, attacking these hitters. So, digging in, Nolan Gorman, fast ball in for a strike. 0 and one. He’s been known to jump all over the first pitch. So that seems like a missed opportunity right there. And now the count is even. Swings through that one out in front that time. One ball, two strength. Hard hit left side. Slings to first in time. Now batting right fielder Jordan. Two down, base is empty. Now at the plate, Jordan Walker. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. Well, as good as things can be, it can be a tough day at the office, even for the skippers, seeing the offense just sputter. Not able to get anything going. Next offering way off the plate. Two down, nobody on here. The bottom of the seventh and that’s in the dirt. Two and one. It on the ground to short and that one finds its way through and that extends the inning. Let’s go. Up next for the Cardinals. Now it’s the second base Thomas Sajay. [Music] Misses the zone for a ball. That was the sweeper. Go. That one misses and a countdown now two and nothing. Walker leads off first with two down to the inning. Lifted in the air right field. Cabierro on his way over and he makes the catch and that ends the inning. So one left for the Cardinals. They’re down here five to one. Now pitching. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Andre Grano. Andre Glano. Ryan McMahon stepping in now for the Yankees. Ryan McMahon. The pitch outside low ball one. Greno a 64 righty. He features a four seam fast, a slider, a curve, and he works in a sinker. Can’t love it cleanly. Still able to fire over and they get the out. Good recovery. Wasn’t easy following the misplay. Right fielder Jose Cavierro. Now it’s the right fielder Jose Caviierro. Come on. First pitch misses. If you’re the pitcher, you’ve got to go right at this guy. It’s the number nine hitter in the lineup. You can’t be afraid of contact in this situation. swinging a miss as he was late. Base is empty, one away, and we’re in the top of the eighth. The 1-1 is fouled off. And a pop off right side. Foul territory. Fielding for the wall. Makes the catch and foul ground. Now here’s Trent Gisham. [Applause] That one at the knees for a strike. and one. [Applause] Let’s go. Go. One. Nope. Outside. Just missed. That one misses three and one. Come on. Come on. And that’s pushed foul off to the left and out of play. [Music] And they’ll do it again. Pay off pitch. That’s ball four. Tried another fast ball but missed the spot. One of the things about that two out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI. And those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. St. Louis. That one hammered but pulled foul. And now the one swinging a foul straight back. swings and misses on the fast ball up in the zone for the strikeout. One left for the Yankees. They lead this one though 51 back here in St. Louis. And now the catcher comes up to him. Pedro Pahz. Pah Warren back to work. Fast ball for a strike. Hit hard on the ground to the right side. And that’s a fair ball. [Applause] Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. Centerielder, Victor Scott. The second Victor Scott next up for the Cardinals. He’s already homerred in this game. That one ripped left field way back there. And that one is going to go. Another homer. He’s done it again. His second homer of the game. And they cut into the lead. It’s 53. They needed that one, Singy. Indeed they did. They’ve been fighting to get back into this game. And just like that, they’re back in it. Man, he just barely got that one out of here. And you’ve got to love the effort and left to try and bring it back. He had a good shot at it. Just couldn’t quite pull it off. It would have been a stunner if he did. And here comes the Yankees manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Will Warren is done. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout. And we’ll be back with a new pitcher. Mark Lighter Jr. gets the call from the pen. Well, he’s been a really tough guy to take deep this season. You usually have to string some hits together in order to get to him. Jun [Music] now the left fielder Lars Nbar pulled hard but it’s a foul ball. The real threats are coming up. Already giving up a home run in this inning. He’s going to really have to bear down. Outside low. It’s a ball in two strikes. Movement in the bullpen. Devin Williams getting loose out there for Aaron Boon. Hedrickk, the lefty warming up as well. Pitch misses and it’s two and two. [Applause] And a ground ball to first and he handles it himself for the out. If you want to be a great defense, you have to deliver consistently. It doesn’t matter how many highlight reel plays you make if you can’t execute the small stuff. Just like we saw, Mason Win next up for the Cardinals. Curve in the dirt. Still only one out here in the inning. Sliced hard but foul. The 1-1 is fouled off. One down. Base is empty. Fouls it off. Still one and two, but a short stop. Takes a ball. The Yankees holding on to a two-run lead here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Swings through that one. It’s a strikeout. That’s about as nasty of a splitter as you’ll come across, especially in terms of movement. I mean, that thing tumbles out of his hand and just drops off the table at the last moment. If he keeps it down, it’s just so tough to put wood on. And up next for St. Louis, Alec Burlson that catches the corner. Terrible. Oh, and two now as he swings through it. More and more guys are looking to slog regardless of the count and this situation will keep a close eye on his approach. Swings and misses. That ends the frame. Two runs for St. Louis on this blast. It’s now 53. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Kyle Ley. And he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits, period. Now it’s Aaron Judge up to the plate. He’s got the power, but great contact skills. One of the best contact hitters in the game. Yet he dodges that fast ball. Oh, the adrenaline’s pumping right there. Pretty good fast ball. Unfortunately, it got away from him. He’s going to have to corral things a little bit. Gets the strike. That was the sweeper. Activity in the bullpen. Ryan Fernandez up and loosening in the pen. And Judge spoils that one. swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. Walker hauls it in and there’s one away. Now batting hitter Cody Bellinger. And up to the plate comes Cody Bellinger. And it may be a long shot, but a triple here will give him the cycle. First offering and it just misses. Boo. He never moved because he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. In there for a strike at the bottom of the zone. Man, 91 on the slider right there. That’s a hard one. That’s a lowend fast ball for some pitchers. Swang in a highf fly ball hit the air left center field. This one’s got a chance to the warning track. Makes the catch. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He’s saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. Chisum stands in here, takes ball one low. Two down, nobody on. You’re in the top of the ninth. Right through there for a strike. He’s trying to stay away from this lefty knowing that a lot of left-handers like the ball down and in. Ball to strike. way out front for strike two. That one almost got him. [Applause] ripped right field. That’s back there. That one way back and it’s gone. He flexes his power with that swing. His 22nd homer of the year. And they tack one on the board. It’s 63. Singi. That’s his 99th career homer. Well, he’s probably already thinking about the next one and don’t want to think too hard because you’ll start to struggle. 100 is a really nice number to get to, though. A breaking ball on the inside part of the plate requires a hitter to stay really square with his mechanics. If you fly open with the front shoulder, there’s no way you keep that ball fair. An outstanding job mechanically. He deserves that home run. So, two down and stepping in for the Yankees, Anthony Vulpi. Pitch misses there and it’s one and0. swing and a miss as he was out front. He’s had a tough day at the plate. Three strikeouts already. It’s hard not to think negative, but you got to find a way to somehow center up the baseball and put it in play. [Music] and down on strikes and he’s gone for the fourth time tonight. One scores in the inning coming on this solo home run. It’s now 63. Back after this on the show. Back now and on the mound, the closer Devin Williams. He’s got a wicked breaking ball in his arsenal and it’s definitely one of his go-to pitches when he needs an out. And now the DH Ivon Herrera and first offering is fouled off. [Music] Just missed. That’s a ball. Next offering upstairs. [Music] That one misses. So a lead off walk. Tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hitter didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. So a man aboard. Nolan Gorman digs in now. 0 for three with three ground outs. Well, the leadoff man gets on. You want to minimize the threat by playing sound defense. Hopefully the pitcher can get a ball on the ground and they can roll him up for two. That one misses. That’s five straight. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here late. Perrera gets his lead at first. Nobody out. This one in the dirt. And that one is inside. [Applause] [Applause] 3-2 on the way. This one popped up middle of the infield. Vulpi. One down. Now batting right fielder Jordan Walker. He’s two outs away. And now the right fielder Jordan Walker. just missed. [Music] That one misses. Now two and0. He hasn’t wanted to challenge him. Both of those pitches off the plate away. Don’t expect anything down the heart of the plate. You may just have to be patient and take your walk here. Good hitters count the 200. The Yanks leading by three. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. And that’s a little bit high. And now three and one. And strike two. Three, two, 3-2 now. This one in the air center field. Gisham settles under it. He makes the catch and there’s two down. Now batting second base Thomas one out left for the Cardinals. Here’s the second baseman Thomas Sajay-Z for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. There’s the strike of the knees. The Redbirds trailing by three here in the last half of inning number nine. Not even close there. And it’s one and one. In the dirt. Throw to second. Not in time. He’s there easily. So, a wild pinch allows the runner to advance. As a closer, he’s out there in that role for a reason. But even they lose the handle on one here and there, especially with all the nasty stuff coming out of bullpens these days. He’s making it a little interesting here. [Applause] The Cards down to their final strike. Just missing there. Two and two. That turns out to be a really good take right there. But you don’t want to end this game with the bat on your shoulder. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. And that is the ball game. Sometimes it takes just getting away from home. Players can sort of come together, connect a little bit more than they do when they’re at home with their families and that can breed to success on the field as we saw in this game today. Excellent win by this team. 6-3 our final score for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami. Thanks for joining us.
