🔴LIVE 🔴Milwaukee Brewers VS Cincinnati Reds / August 17/Mlb Envivo TV/MLB THE SHOW 25
just about set to go now. And on the hill, the big righty Luis May. But Chris, he hasn’t exactly been stellar here on his home mound. Well, I’ll say this, every player wants to perform well at their home ballpark in front of their fans, in front of the city. And you know, this guy no different. He wants to be more effective here. So, you know, you look at the numbers, they haven’t been great at home. I’m sure he wants to turn that around. And we’ll see if he’s able to start that in this one. S freely leading things off and takes a strike. Hit in the air left field and he’ll play it on a bounce. Well, I’m not saying that play was easy, but it was harder than it needed to be thanks to the bad jump. Those small moments can be costly. Ortiz. Joseph Ortiz up now for the Brewers. He’s been tearing it up at the plate recently, hitting better than 350 this month. The shorts stop takes a ball. This one popped up. Foul ground first base side. Has room and he makes the catch. Let’s take a look at the Brewers lineup. This group was shut out their last game. So, we’re going to see if they can bounce back with a better effort here today. And Boo, it can get in your head a little bit when you get shut out. You’re frustrated. You’re seeing that consecutive streak of innings you haven’t scored. And you want to get off to a great start. Score early because if you don’t, you feel like it could linger into two consecutive games, which no one wants to be a part of. And that is out of play. That’s off the mark and it’s one and one man at first. One away. It’s off his shoulder. Eats him up. Quick throw back in. Lead runner holds it second with one gone. Here comes Christian Yelich. I’m liking what I’ve seen from him at the dish lately. Batting average this month, over 400. That one outside. Ball one. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. Two on, one out. There’s the swing and a miss. Knowing that the pitcher wants a ground ball double play opportunity here. You’ve got to lay off pitches down in the zone right there. Swinging at that pitch. That’s a no no. Got the bat going too soon. It’s strike two. Clearly was sitting on a fast ball right there and just ended up out in front of the slider. Hey, you can’t fault him for his commitment. Now he’s just going to have to battle with two strikes. Runners at first and second with one gone. That’s down and in. A slider missed. Got him looking. Called strike three and a fast ball up in the zone. No, you got to be ready to swing the bat with a runner in scoring position in two strikes. Just put the ball in place somewhere and you got a chance. Very frustrating for him, I’m sure. See if the next guy can pick him up. Andrew Vaughn. Now, he’s done a great job making contact recently, batting over 300 so far this month. Two outs. Stevenson can’t squeeze it. Gets away. And the runners will move up. That pitch was pretty far outside, further than he was set up. So, kind of a tough one to handle, but still something he knows he should have had since it bounced off his glove and got away. [Music] That one close ruled a ball and that’s ball two. He’s got a base open. So, the pressure to come in and really attack this hitter not as great as it would be if the bags were sacked. Into center and it drops in. One runs in. Another comes in to score and they take a two-run lead. Big one there as he drives in a couple of runs. He clearly didn’t catch that one on the big part of the bat. just kind of muscled it out there. And you know, on the mound, it can be pretty frustrating for a pitcher, but you just kind of have to expect those to drop in there sometimes. Two outs, runner on first. Now, the third baseman and that’s in for a strike. Hey, by the way, Chris, yes, John, happy birthday. Oh, thank you. Next offering is fouled back. Vaughn off of first with two away. fouls it off. Still one and two. Well, they’re really running up the pitch count in this first inning. Lots of confidence from this team that is perhaps the hottest in baseball right now. That misses the zone. Now two and two. Puts it in the air out towards left center. Hey baby Hayes racing over to make the catch. They get two runs on three hits, no errors and one left onto the bottom of the first. It’s the Brewers two. The Reds coming up back here in Cincinnati and towing the slab, Jacob Miserowski. Well, Boo may be a little pedestrian there in terms of the ERA, but with those numbers, you expect to be in a ball game and have an opportunity to win. And really, that’s all his teammates can ask for. So, we’ll see if he’s able to be consistent in this one. And ready to hit now for Cincinnati. TJ Fedel, center. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. In the air out towards right center, Baroa makes the grab. One pitch and one out. Here’s the lineup for the Reds. Singing this righty heavy lineup is a bit unusual against a right-handed pitcher. Yeah, Boo certainly bucks the old conventional wisdom. And I’m not sure I see the vision from the manager on this one. You’re not exactly putting your players in the best situation to succeed when you roll out a lineup like this. Maybe they’ve seen something on video that tells them there’s a weakness to exploit. Perhaps that’s it. Spencer Steer stands in now. Looks at that one inside. Let’s go and delivers outside. That was absolute gas. Triple digits on the gun. It’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by. up and in and it’s three and0. Was a good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and in just on the edge and that’s one of those if you swing at it. He had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. That’s in there and now three and one backto-back fast balls in. That last one called for a strike probably go away but look for him to come back in there to try to finish you off. You got this. Swing and a miss at 100. Struck him out. Came inside with that two- strike fast ball nicely and just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate. Couldn’t get around on it and catch it out front. Many times if you do, it’s a foul ball. And you know, a lot of pitchers, they really don’t like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter. And when they’ve got him up against the ropes, got to figure out a way to put them away. Did a nice job right there. Two down. Nobody on. He swings and fouls one off. Come on. Just missed. Swinging a drive deep right field. Out of here. for a home run off the foul pole. He sends it out of here. Home run number 20 on the year and they’re on the scoreboard. It’s 2-1. [Applause] Well, he really crushed that thing down the line and everyone had to hold their breath until it clanked off the pole. And every time that happens, it just kind of feels like a trick shot or something. But really, it’s just a stroke of luck that it stays fair long enough. Here’s Miguel and Duhar swing and a miss at 100 m anph. Two out. Space is empty. Next offering is down low. [Music] Swinging a ground ball and foul ball. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up inside at 100 and the count is two and two in there. Got him looking and that one split the plate. One scores in the inning coming on this solo home run and it’s now a two-1 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. And we’re back. New inning getting started up now for Milwaukee. Bryce Terang. May back to work. Check swing and he went strike one. [Music] inside. Just missed you can do it. Swing and a ball lifted in the air right field. He just missed it. Marte brings it in and a quick out number one. Batting center. And now the center fielder Stewart Baroa looking for his first big league hit right here. [Music] Check swing called strike. Next offering is in for a strike. Our plate umpire Earl Hris. Yeah, with Hendricks Boo kind of interesting. He’s a good consistent umpire, but you do hear that he kind of favors one side of the plate more than the other. So, it’s really hard to know for sure, but I think that usually it has to do something with where he sets up prior to each pitch. Next offering upstairs. What about an umpire’s height? How much of a role does that play in your experience and what the strike zone is like? Yeah, I think it pushes the strike zone up a little bit, which you know, as a former hitter, you like that. You wanted the ball up. You didn’t want to have to deal with stuff down in the zone consistently. Out towards right center field. Fredel makes the grab and there are two down. Batty leftielder Brandon Lockidge. Digging in. It’s the speedy outfielder Brandon Lockidge. First pitch not close. Bunting for a hit. Scoops it up bare-handed. Not in time. Great effort, but it’s an infield hit. Nearly a highlight reel play at third, but the bare hand grab still wasn’t enough to get the out. Great effort to make that play as close as it was though. Back to the top of the Milwaukee order. S Freelick up now for the Brewers. On the ground right side, but a kicks foul. fought off foul. Right-hander kicks. Steals one ball, two strikes. Lockage leads off first with two down to the inning. Come on. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. Two and two. Squirts away a little bit. May over to first. Lockage dives back in safely. swing and a high-fly ball out there towards left field. And that is that. No runs, one hit, no errors, and a man left. We go to the bottom of inning number two. It’s the Brewers two and the Reds won. back here at Great American Ballpark. And now it’s Gavin Luxavin Lux. And a strike right through there. That one in triple digits. Next offering in there for a strike. No balls, two strikes. right side. Vaughn steps on first for the out batting six left fielder Austin Hayes. And now it’s Austin Hayes. [Music] That one is absolutely belted. This one’s got a chance and it one hops the wall into second and he’s got a double. Well, clearly he was ready to hit right there. Pitch was away and he did exactly what you’re supposed to do with it. Drive it the other way. Just go with the pitch. So digging in Noelv Marte good power not great in the OBP department that one in triple digits 01 do You can do it. And that one upstairs. Ball one. [Music] The 1-1 is fouled off. All right. swing and a miss. Struck him out. No messing around with the pitch calling in that sequence right there. Four pitches, all fast balls. Yeah, and that makes me think that was the plan before the at bat even started. If you think you can simply just beat a guy with only your fast ball, why throw him anything else until he shows you he can handle it. Here’s the catcher, Tyler Stevenson. All right, Tyler, let’s go. Swung on. Belted. That one’s deep. Gone. That’s worth the price of admission. Home run number 10 on the year. And they grab the lead. It’s 3-2. He only needed one swing to square it up. Not wasting any time in that at bat. Boo. Aggressive. And it paid off. [Applause] Most times it’s the pitcher looking at the scoreboard for velocity, but in this case it’s the hitter. He just turned around triple digits at the dish. I don’t even know how he saw that pitch. Maybe he didn’t, but he got a home run out of it. So two down. Ke Ryan Hayes the next to hit for the Reds in there for strike one. Base is empty, two away, but two runs are in. Bottom half of inning number two. Next offering down in the dirt. And strike two. swing and a miss and he’s down on strikes. He’s notched four strikeouts now, but two come across to score in the inning courtesy of this two-run homer. It’s now a 32 ball game. You’re dialed into the show. And welcome back to the ballpark. All set for the start of the inning. And now Joseph Ortiz. Ortiz batting second in today’s lineup. And he was drafted in the fourth round back in 2019. Yeah, that’s fouled off. The 01 tapped softly third base side. A swinging bunt. Hayes to first. One up, one down. Good late bite on that slider. Got the hitter out in front. Rolled over on it. Exactly what he was supposed to do. And now it’s William Contrarus. Singled and scored his first time. Highfly ball pretty well struck out towards right center and an automatic double as it hops the fence. Well, there’s something really nice about getting yourself an automatic double like that. You get to stroll into second base without having to worry about a throw or getting your uniform dirty. And now you’re just looking for the next guy to kind of do the same thing. Maybe put one in the gap so you can jog home as well. One out, runner at second. And next is the designated hitter, Christian Yelich. He looks more focused at the plate and working the count after that first at bat strikeout. Contrarus over at second, one down. Cincinnati. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here with a middle of the order hitter up, runner in scoring position. He’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike. And ball four, two aboard. Pretty easy walk right there. Last pitch wasn’t even much to think about. Now batting first Andrew Vaughn. Next for the Brewers, Andrew Vaughn. He drove in two with a single his first time up. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. [Applause] Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. Two on, one out inside. Two balls in a strike. Tough spot right here. A couple runners on, two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. Yeah, the 2-1 hammered, but foul. [Music] They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. Spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another. Runners at first and second with one gone. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. Swing and a miss. struck him out. Couldn’t hit the fast ball at the knees. He had him out in front, which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this, known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. Here’s the third baseman. Fly to left his first time. And that’s in there for strike one. [Applause] Hard hit right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. So, it’s no runs on a hit, no errors, and two are left. We move on to the bottom of inning number three. It’s the Reds three and the Brewers two. Back here in Cincinnati, here’s the center fielder, TJ Fredle. TJ Fedle. Now a screamer into the outfield and no one can get there. Now he turns and heads for second. The throw in. and he’ll pull into second safely. Wastes no time there. That pretty much split the zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay. [Applause] And now the first baseman Spencer Steer 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. That one’s in there. 0 and one. [Music] Fast ball for a strike. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out here in the last half of the third. That one missed. [Applause] Man at second. Got him looking. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. Wow. That’s a tough call for the hitter, but the pitcher will take that all day long. not quite in the strike zone, but he found a spot that the umpire is going to, at least for now, allow him to get that call. So, hitters are going to have to make an adjustment, but pitchers are going to learn from those things and really try to exploit them if they can. Ellie Dea Cruz, the next to hit for the Reds. He’s already homered in this game. Top of the zone for a called strike. So, here’s a fun note on Ellie. He became the youngest player in high a ball to homer from both sides of the plate in the same game. And it gets better. He did it again two games later. Those are the type of games that tend to get you promoted in the minors. There’s a swing and a drive way back there and it gets into the corner, but it’s foul. [Applause] way high with that one. And that is ball one. Pretty standard high 02 fast ball right there. If you’re smart, you’ll look for something down in the zone, but not too far. Don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt. Just missed. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Let’s go. Strike three and that’s two in a row. So back-to back strikeouts now and they still haven’t managed to do anything with the leadoff double. Yeah, Boo. And you just don’t want to get careless here. You’ve done a really good job to get two outs after that leadoff double as you mentioned and just got to execute your pitches and it’s a non-issue. Miguel Anduhar the next to hit for the Reds. Struck out looking his first time. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Fredel at second with two down. Come on. Swaying at a high-fly ball well struck back there and it’s into the bullpen for a homer. He shoots one out to right. It’s 52. That’s their third home run of the game. They’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one. They’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot. [Applause] Rug. I wasn’t sure he hit that one as hard as he needed to to get it out of here, but it had just enough behind it for the homer. What an attempt at the wall, though. He really gave a terrific effort to try and bring that one back. So, two away with nobody on. Next for Cincinnati, Gavin Lux grounded out his first time up and a strike in there. and a foul ball. Two outs and now one and two. One ball, two strikes. Come on. Fights it off. He’ll see another 100 milesPH foul that off. That That’s a good piece of swinging. I won’t say hitting because he didn’t get a knock, but a good piece of swinging to keep the bat alive alive. Here’s a one-two. That one way inside. swing and a miss. Struck him out. Picks up strikeout number seven. Cincinnati plates a pair on this homer. It’s now 52. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Out of the fourth, this is Bryce Terra taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. And he pumps in a strike. Next pitch is downstairs. The 1-1 is fouled off. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Come on. That one back up the middle and it gets through. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Now batting Steuart Baroa up now for the Brewers. And there’s one thing on his mind this at bat. Getting that first hit at the big league level. Line drive, base hit. Lead runner to second. So two on and nobody out. Now batting next for Milwaukee. Brandon Lockidge. Just missed. First and second, no outs. Top half of inning number four. So, two balls and no strikes. He was looking to come up with the shutdown inning and off to a shaky start. They had a strike right through there. That one in triple digits. That misses. And now three balls and a strike. And they’re all loaded up. He’s making things difficult for himself right now out there on the mound. But you know, his confidence should still be high enough to get out of this, but he’s going to have to buckle down right here. Manager out of the dugout now. And it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Luis May won’t go any further. And a decent effort considering he’s normally reliever. Back with the new pitcher in a minute. Tony Santion gets the ball now. Still a lot of game left and this game could go either way. So this is a big opportunity for him to get some important outs and try to help carry this lead into the later innings. Back to the top of the lineup and stepping in is the speedy Selick. line drive and this might be trouble. One runs in the second run scores headed for the plate. He’s safe and they clear the bases. Just a clutch at bat right there. Big time swing when this team really needed it. Got a fast ball middle of the plate. Jumped all over it. absolutely smoked that ball. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Here’s the shorts stop at the plate. Joseph Ortiz. He swings and drives one out to deep left field. This one could be trouble. Headed for the plate. He scores and they have the lead. Now batting. Well, this one started with a bad jump, a bad read off of the bat. He ends up having to try to leap out of desperation. Can’t come down with it, and it turned into extra bases. Now, William Contrus, that’s in for a strike. [Applause] Come on. Ortiz stands at second with no outs. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield coming home. He’ll score and it’s an RBI single. It’s seven to five. Picks himself up an RBI. Timing on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. Didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. Here’s Yelich at the dish. He is struck out and he is walked. on the ground is second. Might be two. Bears one onto first. Double play. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. The first baseman, Andrew Vaughn. Andrew Vaughn up now for the Brewers. That one misses. And that’s ball one. Two down. Doan outside with a breaking ball. He’s clearly trying to work him away here. Both pitches off the plate. If you really want to put the ball in play, you’re going to have to stay back and drive it to the opposite field. Two outs. That one fouled off. Swing and a miss. And he got him to chase. He has a tendency to chase out of the zone and that slider that’s down. That’s one of his money pitches to get that swing and miss. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. cut on and miss. Struck him out. That’ll end the inning after a lot of scoring, but they take the lead thanks to a fiveun outburst to the bottom of inning number four. Now it’s the Brewers seven and the Reds five. Bottom of the fourth now. The left fielder Austin Hayes. Austin Hayes and ball one. Well, these Reds showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. Not only have they already put up a bunch of runs on the board, but they’ve also made the starter work really hard out there. Two balls, no strikes. finds his way through. Base hit and a good start to the inning. Wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. Noelv Marte now at the plate. He was a strikeout victim his first time. Swinging a foul out of play. Like I said, his pitch count is high, so I got to expect they’ll be turning to their bullpin sooner than they had hoped. Nobody out. Runner at first. That one finds the corner and that is strike two with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Gets a piece and stays alive. Rudder at first with no outs here. That one misses and the count is one and two. And that’s ruled a swing. It’s a strikeout. Tyler Stevenson the next to hit for the Reds. He’s already homerred here in this one. And he blows that one by him at a 100. Just a bit tardy there. Not sure if he had a hard time picking it up out of the hand or if he was sitting off speed. Next offering is downstairs. popped up left side. Ortiz pulls it in for the owl. And there’s two away. Bill, that was a pitch you got to crush. Unbelievable that he missed it right there. And I’m telling you, he is going to be frustrated with himself until his next at bat. Now batting Key Brian Hayes. His first at bat was a strikeout. [Music] [Applause] Now a pop up on the infield. Terra makes the grab and that’ll do it. So one left for Cincinnati. They’re down two. 7 to five. Ready now for the fifth inning. Up now for Milwaukee. Number 21. [Music] John, back to work. There’s a strike. Well, these Brewers really impressed me with the quality of their at bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work. It looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early, get him out of the game before he settles in. So, I’d say mission accomplished. Next offering misses down and away. fouled off and they’ll do it again. The one two stays alive. flew open a little bit with that front shoulder, but was able to slow his bat down just enough to make contact with that pitch, keep the bat alive. Next offering upstairs, swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. He’s there. He’s got it. One away. Now batting second base. Next for the Brewers, Bryce Terang. Looking good. That one way outside. And that’s ball one. Let’s go. One down. Base is empty. And there’s a ball. Let’s go. Here’s a two. That missed. That’s a ball. Three 0. to him. That’s ball four. Tried another fast ball but missed the spot. Belly tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hitter didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. Man at first with one gone. Next for Milwaukee. Stewart Baroa. Santio checks the runner. One for two. fouls one off out of play. Back to our left. This is one of those situations defensively where you can’t try to do too much. You got to make sure that you field the ball cleanly and get one out first. It’s going to be tough to get two with this kind of speed in the batters box. Terang the runner at first with one gone in the inning. Swinging a foul straight back. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. Got him swinging. Well, Boo, I’ll tell you, when he goes to look at the video of that pitch, he’s going to want to punch himself. That slider had hit me written all over it. And clearly, he just got a little too excited and was out in front. Tell you what, when you get a pitch like that, you cannot miss it. Those have a chance to go a long way. Now, here is Brandon Lockage. pitch is in there and it’s 0 and one slice down the right side. Let’s go. Breaking ball misses down and away. hit hard to the ground and up the middle. Base hit throw stops the lead runner at second. Two on and two out. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game. But all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. And now the right fielder S. Freelick drove in three last time up. And another chance to put something on the board here. That’s outside. Ball one. Two on, two outs. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. That’s a ball. First and second, two down and we’re in the top of the fifth and he grounds one to the right side and that’s just foul. bows that off to the left and will do it again. Two outs. That one missed. Joseph Ortiz up next for the Brewers. And that’ll load the bases. Well, a breaking ball in that 3-2 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. So, bases all loaded up. Up now for Milwaukee. Joseph Ortiz. First pitch just misses. Two walks in the inning already and he just doesn’t seem comfortable out there. Like he can find the right mechanics and then repeat them. The shorts stop takes the ball. Pressure’s on right here. 20 count. Base is loaded. You don’t want to fall to a three ball count and then walk in or on. He’s got to challenge the hitter right here. Two outs, bases are full. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. first and we’ll see if it’s an error. I think he got a little casual on that play and took it for granted a little bit. So maybe just as much of a mental mistake as a physical one. And with two outs, that’s a tough one to swallow for the entire defense. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Tony Santion will depart and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. Now pitching. So a new arm out of the bullpen for the Reds. Andrew Abbott. And he steps right into a bases loaded jam where this game could kind of get blown wide open. Just needs one out to get out of it. So this is a huge matchup coming up. William Contreras getting ready to hit in there and it’s 0 and one. Oh, he’s so good about trying to drive the ball to the opposite field gap in these situations. If he takes that approach, he could bust this game wide open. Base is loaded. Two down. Bounced out to short. Throws across the diamond. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. So they get one but end up leaving the bases loaded. Last half of the fifth. Coming up, it’s the Brewers eight and the Reds five. And we’re back. And now the center fielder TJ Fredel and a foul ball. Well, these Reds digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. They have five extra base hits on the stat sheet so far, and that tells me they’re seeing the ball out of the pitcher hand really well. That one at triple digits. With all those extra base hits, it’s easy to think we’re going to see that trend continue the rest of the game. They seem to be really locked in at the plate. That one in the dirt and it’s one and two. And that one almost hit him. No, that missed. That’s the ball. Count is full. You got this. Base hit. So, a man on base to start the inning. Couple of hits in a row for him here. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. Now it’s going to be Spencer Steer. That’s off the inside corner. One and0. You can do it. Come on. Foul ball there. Outside low. Two and one. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. Throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Couple of singles back to back. Wasn’t able to elevate that one, but he sure hit it hard enough to get through the infield. There’s not a whole lot of time for the defenders to react and try to make a play when it’s ripped like that. There comes a skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Jacob Miserowski is done. It’s a three-run game and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. Brandon Woodruff taking over on the mound. Still pretty early in the ball game, so this bullpen has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs. Kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him. Now it’s the shortstop. Ellie Dea Cruz. That one ripped way back there and it gets into the corner, but it’s fouled. You know, one of the most memorable innings ever for Ellie happened in July 2023. In one inning, De La Cruz hit a two out single to take the lead and then proceeded to do something that a Red’s player hasn’t done in more than a hundred years. He stole second, third, and home in the same inning. It only took two pitches for him to steal all three bases. [Music] And that one upstairs, ball one. [Music] Whacked out to center field. That’s well struck. Way back there. And that one is out of here. Another homer. His second home run of the game. And we’re level. It’s 88. That’s their fourth home run of the game. They can’t stop. And they won’t stop hitting home runs in this one. Boo. They’re clearly feeding off of each other at the dish. That’s exactly the pitch he was looking for. Crushes it and hits it out of the ballpark. [Applause] At the plate, Miguel Anduhar [Applause] in the air left field. Lockage puts it away for the out. Are you kidding me? Now batting second base. And here is Gavin Lux for two in this one. [Music] Ground ball right side. And he takes it himself for the out. Now batting left fielder Austin. And now Austin Hayes and it’s fouled away. That’s inside. Woodrift deals on the ground to the left and it goes just foul and now two and two. Two down, nobody on. Last half of inning number five. Next offering is down low. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. Smoked on the ground to second. Whips it to first. And the inning is over. Reds get three on this long ball. All even now at eight apiece. Major League Baseball is on the show. Back here at Great American Ballpark. Start of the six, John Shami with Chris Singleton. And leading off, Christian Yell. [Music] Come on. And a pop off right side. Foul territory. And in foul ground. He pulls it down. One out. Got the pitch that he wanted. Just a little bit quick. Front shoulder open. Backside collapsed a little bit. And the launch angle not where he needed it to be. Andrew Vaughn up now for the Brewers. The number three overall pick out of Cal for the White Socks in 2019. Movement in the bullpen. Brent Sudter up and throwing for Terry Francona. Martinez the right-hander loosening up as well. Fast ball for a strike. Now a check swing at the 1-1. Look down to first and Woody Keller right on it. Says he held up. One out. Base is empty in the air. Left field. Hayes ranging after it. And a couple of quick outs. Up next for Milwaukee. Third base. Now the third base 0 for three in this one. He’s someone that you might not describe as having elite level speed, but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game. There’s the strike. Boo. This guy’s definitely a plus runner, but what I love about him is that he goes all out every single time. Never takes a break. It’s guys like that, even though they don’t have the elite speed, the fact that they’re consistent with it, they make moves on the base paths. Two down on and he hits a ground ball right side and foul ball. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow right field and that is that offense held in check there. 789 two up in the home half of the inning. We are deadlocked at eight apiece. Bottom of the inning in now for the Reds. Noelv Marte. Activity in the bullpen for the Brewers. DL Hall the left-hander up and throwing. Aribe warming up as well. And there’s a foul ball. And that one is inside. [Applause] That clips the corner. Swang and a ball lifted in the air. Puts it away for the out. Now batting catcher Tyler. And now the catcher comes up to him. Tyler Stevenson. Get another one. Stevenson, 28 years old, a former first round pick back in 2015. [Music] Little chopper rolls foul. That one missing inside. Base is empty. One away here in the bottom of the sixth. Struck him out. He says, “I don’t care about draft rounds. Take a seat.” Key Brian Hayes, the next to hit for the Reds. When you talk about elite defensive third baseman, this guy is at the top of the list. And he swings and lifts one to deep center field. That one’s carrying. Dives, but it falls. And now it looks like extra bases safely into second. He’s got a double. Everything came together for him. Just a very nice approach and swing right there to use the big part of the field. Everything was on time. He stayed balanced through the entire swing and just launched that one into center. A chance now to take the lead. And at this point in the game, that could be a deciding run. Now here’s the Red’s leadoff man, TJ Fredel. And the first pitch misses for ball one. This guy plays third base like he’s a shortstop. And he welcomes the difficult play. Can throw from so many different angles and makes really tough plays look very easy. Swings through that one. One ball, one strike. That’s a strike. Hayes stands at second with two gone. He goes down looking. He’s in a tough spot. Had to make a great pitch. Did it. Got the strike out. Gets out of the jam. Clearly, he’s happy with those results. And welcome back to the ballpark. We go to the top of the seventh. Now it’s the second baseman, Bryce Terang. That misses and it’s one and0. Next offering is fouled back. Trying to keep good speed off the bases. And there’s the strike. That’s inside. Ball two. Twins and misses. It’s a strikeout. Had him way out front of the slur. And Chris, that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base. And the defense breathes a sigh of relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play. But that’s how you do it. Keep him off balance, get him out of there, and deal with the next guy. Now a chance for Steuart Baroa. All tied up here in the top half of inning number seven. That one fouled hard the other way. Fouled off down the right side. Swaying at a ball popped in the air. Fair ball. Takes the turn. and he’s digging for second. The throw in and that holds the go-ahead run at second base. Back against the wall with two strikes, but found a way. Hooked around that pitch on the outside, but he was still able to square it up pretty nicely. And that takes quick, strong wrist to pull that off. Now that sets up a huge at bat in this ball game. So the go-ahehead run is into scoring position. Brandon Lockage will hit next. Throw to second. Save. Good wheels out there on second and he’s getting a pretty big lead right now. Definitely looking to score on any hit to the outfield. Trying to bunt his way on. Fires to first. Just got him on that one. Well, there it looked like the batter was trying to bunt for a base hit and as he got thrown out, the runner advanced. So, he’s going to get credited with the sack bond. You know, there’s this red-headed announcer that I work with sometimes that gets really angry when that happens. And a popup on the left side of the infield. Makes the grab and that’s the third out. Brewers strand one. Score remains at eight apiece. Now pitching. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh, Abnerbe. And he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits, period. Leading off, Spencer Steer, one for three. Spencer Steer first offering and it just misses [Music] rolled softly but that goes foul healthy cut. Tough pitch at 98 but a really good pass at the ball. Daddy and downstairs [Applause] swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher and he makes the catch and there’s one down. That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. Just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up and ready to hit now for Cincinnati. Ellie Dea Cruz, he’s got a couple homers already. So, can he possibly do it again? Come on, man. Of course he can. Those two he hit were legit. And he looks pretty locked in right now at the dish. just off the inside edge. He never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Pitch misses there. Two and 0. you get to this part of the order. Yeah, there’s some pop there, but more likely there are some base hits. So, very important to be patient. Let the pitcher walk you if he will to the right side. Throws to first and that quickly two away. Now batting the designated hitter, Miguel. And now the designated hitter for the Reds, Miguel on Duhard. Ball one there. Two down, nobody on here. The bottom of the seventh. That one ripped but fouled. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. [Music] And that’s outside. I know a slider is a great pitch, but when you’ve got really good velocity, sometimes you just got to challenge the hitter with that four seamer. Outside ball four. One of the things about that two-out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So, a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI. And those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. Lux in the box now. No balls in a strike. There it was. A high velocity fastball in the zone. I think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter. He’s got good stuff. pitch inside the zone and trust it. And that one is in for a strike at 95 and a count is 0 and two. [Music] Two outs and there’s a rocket into the outfield and that moves the go ahead run to scoring position with two gone. Well, he found himself behind in the count right there, but he didn’t give in. Just a cookie down the middle. I mean, those are the ones you dream about. Ones in the cage you’re just hoping you get in the ball game. Right down the middle. Not a whole lot of velocity. Right on top of it. Now, a huge at bat in this game coming up. Austin Hayes. The next to hit for the Reds. Yeah, that’s too high. Oh, no strike. [Music] On Duhar at second, Lux at first. Two out of the inning. And that misses and a count two and one. [Applause] That one down the line and that’s just foul. [Applause] Deep breath. He’s ready and he fires. Swing and a miss. And that is that. So they strand a pair. We look ahead to inning number eight. We are deadlocked at eight apiece. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Nick Martinez and he’s had his struggles so far this year as you can see the inflated erra looking to bring that down a little bit right here. So digging in Joseph Ortiz. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. And that’s downstairs and outside. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Emilio Pagan up and throwing for Terry Francona. [Music] That missed. That’s a ball. Two balls, one strike up the middle. Dela Cruz tosses to first and that’s one away as the leadoff man is out in the eighth. Now betting catcher William Contras. Next for the Brewers, William Contras. Let’s go. And that one fouled off. Base is empty. One away. And we’re in the top of the eighth. That clips a corner. really good cutter that he’s able to front door and back door. That pitch is devastating. [Applause] hard ground ball for a base knock. So, the go-ahehead run is on base with a knock. Still able to come through behind in the count right there. Once you get the ball by the pitcher, there’s a lot of base hits up the middle, even on ground ball. So, a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit. Now it’s Christian Yelich, the MVP in 2018, the runner up in 2019. That one the other way. And that should be extra bases. Runner around third on his way to the plate. The relay tag out. They cut down the go-ahead run at the plate. A lot of real estate to cover on that play defensively. A long throw to the cut off man and then a lot of ground to make up as well on the relay. But an excellent job of execution and getting that out at the dish as he tried to make it home all the way from first base. So up next, Andrew Vaugh and he swings and misses at the initial offering. As a pitcher, you know, the runner on second is ready to push things with his speed. A base hit, it’s probably going to be a big run, so you really have to execute on the mound. Not close with that one. One and one. Two down. Go ahead run in scoring position. When the skipper calls down to the bullpen, he’s expecting the guy to come in and get outs. So far, not getting what he was hoping for. Next pitch misses. And that’s ball three. Man on second, two down, fouls one away and now three and two. And that’s a fair ball. Yell rounds third headed for the plate. He’ll score easily and it’s an RBI single. They laid it in the eighth. Well done. Drives in the run. Got the top of the ball a little bit, but not much. That was hit pretty hard through the infield, so I think he’ll be happy with that swing. Definitely generated some good bats speed. Two outs, runner on first. Here’s the third baseman right through there for a strike. [Music] All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. This to third. pays. They take the force out, third out, and that ends the frame. So, one run in the inning on this base hit. It’s down to one here at 98. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. DL Hall. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. Well, one-run game. Noelv Marte digs in now and fouled off, looking to get the tying run on base. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. And that one is lifted in the air. One up, one down. Up next for the Reds, catcher. And here’s the catcher, Tyler Stevenson. Stevenson. [Music] Misses outside. And that’s ball one. Trying to hold a one-run lead near the bottom half of the eighth inning. And that’s a strike. [Music] and misses inside. [Applause] Chopped on the ground. Ortiz slinging it to first in time. That play won’t be trending on social media later on, but it’s still important to execute it to perfection. This game is a lot harder than it looks, partner. Now, a move being made for a pitch hitter, Santiago Espino. And this is a big at bat coming, boo. Definitely a little added pressure on him here. Fast ball for a strike at 95. No, one strike. Two down, nobody on and that’s fouled off. Very solid inning on the mound so far here in the eighth. Holding on to this narrow lead. This is exactly what they were looking for. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. battling here as he fouls it away. Two outs. Pitch misses. Now one and two. Ground ball left side over to first and that will end the inning. And one, two, three go the Reds. Still down a run. It’s a 98 ball game. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Brent Sudter bringing in the lefty with a left-handed hitter coming up to hit. Classic bullpen move right here. So, we’ll see how it works out. Bryce Terra up now for the Brewers. Second base, Bryce Terang. That just misses. And that’s ball one. The Cincinnati bullpen has some movement. Scott Barlo up and throwing. Mole, a left-hander, also throwing [Music] just off the inside edge. swing and a popup. Dela Cruz makes the grab. One away. Now batting center fielder Stewart Baroa digging in. Steuart Baroa singing. You got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively. I mean watching him track balls in the outfield, it is beautiful. out to short. Dela Cruz slings it across. Two quick outs here in the top of the ninth. Running out of chances to pad the lead. Hey man, four pitches, two outs. That is an excellent pace. And now Brandon Lockidge. So how much does his speed factor into his ability to go get it? It’s heartbreaking for the hitter because off the bat he thinks this ball’s going to get down because of that speed and the ability to make up so much ground. He enters the picture and breaks a guy’s heart. Next offering in there for a strike and it’s nothing in two. There’s one guy that I can think about Boo who started as a third baseman, Alex Gordon, and then became an elite perennial gold glover out in left field for the Kansas City Royals. But he’s a guy when you watch him play, you would imagine that that’s all he ever played in his life was the outfield. Slings to first and that is that. Nothing doing for the offense that time. To the bottom of the ninth we go. Top of the order. Doo up. It’s the Brewers nine and the Reds eight. Welcome back. And here comes the closer Trevor McIll. 29 saves on the season. So he’s looking for number 30 right here. He’s been big for him in the back of that bullpen. Back to the top of the order. TJ Fedel now at the plate. Reds center fielder TJ Fredle. There’s the strike. And I know you want to be patient as a hitter, but you got to be ready to jump on the first thing straight. And he got one right there. but left the bat on his shoulder. Just missed. One [Applause] and a count. One and two. One-run game. Bottom nine. Off the mark there. And the count is even. Two and two. [Music] [Applause] hit on the ground to short in plenty of time to first and the leadoff man retired here in the ninth. That’s a huge defensive play in the late stages of the game. It might not be the most challenging we’ve seen today, but it needed to be made. That’s helping your team. popped up. Oh, come on. Are you kidding me? Makes the grab. Two down. That’s unbelievable. Now batting shortstop Ellie De Cruz. So they’re down to their final out. And now the shorts stop Ellie Dea Cruz. Corner infielders guarding the lines trying to prevent extra bases. That one’s in there. 0 and one. Just amazing to me how many closers and backend relievers just throw absolute gas these days. I never would have had a chance. And that one fouled off. Trying to close out a one-run lead. And the home team trying to pull it out. And that skips in the dirt. This could end it. Hit to right and that ought to do it. Makes the catch. Ball game. And the Brewers hold on to win a tight one as this one ends as a one-run ball game. He’s done it again, Boog. That’s his 30th save of the year as he puts another game to bed. Sweet dreams, everyone.
