🔴LIVE 🔴New York Mets VS Washington Nationals / August 18/ /MLB THE SHOW 25

to pay your strengths and you’ll come out of here with a good outing. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. Just about set. Our starter in this one, Mitchell Parker. What do we need to know here? Well, coming into this game, hitters are batting under 250 against this starting pitcher. So, it just shows you how effective he’s been. He’s been able to move his pitches around, add and subtract, change up the look so that hitters don’t get too comfortable and start squaring up the baseball. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. And stepping in for New York, Francisco Lindor. DC. And that one is in for a strike at 95. And we’re underway. outside low and that’s ball one. Well, here’s a game Lindor will never forget. One night in July of 2023, he went five for five with a home run, two triples, and he scored three runs. That stat line is so rare, only one other player has done it. Guess who? Willie Mays in 1958. Next pitch inside and the count’s even at two. He’s great hitting the ball the other way and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. Foul ball. Another two two upcoming. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. [Music] That’s a little high. And that’s ball three. Think he wanted that call on the upper part of the zone, but just didn’t get it. Now he’s just trying to get a better feel for how much it missed. So he can adjust his sights just a little bit. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. liner base hit. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. Batting second, right, Juan Sto. And now it’s Juan Sodto. Another solid power season. And he swings and misses and it’s nothing at one. [Applause] Lindor gets his lead at first. Nobody out. Come on, let’s get the ground. Here’s the O2. Swing and a miss at the splitter and it’s a strike out. Boog, if you can set up a good two- strike splitter with a fast ball on the previous pitch, it’s going to be so tough to recognize and adjust your swing to get a piece of it. Clearly had him reaching for it right there. Here’s Brandon NMO definitely scuffling at the dish lately. Barely hitting over the Mendoza line this month. [Music] outside and a count even one and one. Step off throw to first tag and they got him. Lindor picked off. Wow, that could be so tough. Left-hander with that leg picks it up and can dangle it in the air a little bit and you’re not quite sure. Really good move over and you can’t blame the base runner for getting picked off on that one. Swings through that. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Little early on that fast ball. I’m sure the pitcher taking a note. Look for an offspe pitch on this next one. [Music] And that’s in the dirt. Spoils a two- strike pitch. She’ll see. Goes down looking. Nothing doing for the Mets. And now the Nets get their first opportunity. There’s no score. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Back here in Nationals Park towing the slab in today’s game. Frankie Montas and Chris pitching on the road has not been particularly kind to him. Yeah. And you don’t want to be too quick to say that he can’t pitch on the road. Sometimes, you know, it’s just a matter of luck. It’s not having a feel difference between the bullpin mound to the mound out there on the playing field. Don’t know what it is, but I know this. He’s got good enough stuff to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home. So, we’ll see what he’s able to do in this one. That one fouled off. [Music] That one almost got him. Straighten him up a little bit. [Applause] out towards right center field. Mullins sizing this one up. Pulls it in. And there’s one away. As we take a look at the Nationals lineup, someone who makes things happen for them in part with his legs. Dylan Cruz. Well, Boog, he’s a guy to watch because he capitalizes on the big situations as well as anyone hitting over 350 with runners in scoring position. And you know what that means? That means he’s a key player for this offense because he can really drive them in when the team needs him the most. He’s been clutch all year. CJ Abrams batting with one down. Takes a strike. One out. Base is empty. A short stop takes a ball. That one close ruled a ball. Two balls in a strike. And now a little barking back towards the umpire. Clearly thought he got that outside corner on what was a pretty big pitch. Sometimes that only makes it worse for you moving forward, but it can also open up that location in the future if the umpire thinks there’s a chance that he missed it. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. That’s down and in. That’s a really good take right there. Slider down and in. Very difficult to get on the same plane and do anything with foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Ground ball up the middle. Lindor on to first. So it was a long battle at the plate, but they still managed to get the out. Third first baseman Paul D. Young. Now it’s Paul D. Young up to the plate. He’s been a great free agent side. And a foul ball. Two out. Space is empty. Breaking ball through there for a strike. outside. That’s a ball. [Music] Foul ball. Still a one and two count. That one missed. Ground ball left side and it goes just fouled. Swing and a ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit and that keeps the inning going. So, next will be the fourhole hitter for the Nationals. Dalen Lyall in for a strike. It’s 0 and one on the ground and foul ball. [Applause] Two outs. fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two. And ball one. Good job to fight that one off. Up the middle into the outfield. Base hit. And now first and second with two outs. Batting fifth right fielder. And now the right fielder Dylan Cruz. swing and a miss. Strike one. Lots of pitches thrown in this first inning. It’s kind of that nightmare scenario for starting pitching. But you know what? It’s still early enough. He can settle in. He can get some length if he just cleans up his mechanics a little bit. And that’s a little bit high. And it’s one and one to Young over at second. Lyle on at first with two down. Check swing. Now he’ll look down to first and he went around just enough that time. [Music] Sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve, but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results. And right there, thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam. Back in Washington DC at the plate, Pete Alonzo. Alonzo. If you don’t get ahead in the count, you can forget about having any success against him. Parker back to work. That one ripped way back there. Get out of town. That one felt good. It’s one- nothing. He only needed one swing to square it up. Not wasting any time in that at bat. Boo. Aggressive and it paid off. That’s an impressive swing of the bat to go over the wall to the opposite field gap. And know there are a lot of guys that just don’t have the pop to do that and probably just as many who don’t have the approach either. He let that ball travel and he got great extension on the follow through to drive it out of here. That’s hard hit on the line. Cruz brings it in and there’s one down. Man, that’s one of those at bats where you have to remind yourself it’s about the process. He did everything right right there. Nothing to show for it, but in your mind you have to convince yourself that it was a very good at bat. Francisco Alvarez in the box now. No balls in a strike. Swing and a miss. Dave Lawrence assigned to work home plate in this one. Good umpire Boo. Very fair, very consistent. Now, I did hear some feedback that he opens up the outside corner a little bit on left-handed hitters, which, you know, for me, I’d be kind of salty. So maybe something to keep an eye on and see if that factors into this one at all. And there’s a ball. Chris, do players ever change their approach in meaningful ways based on who’s umpiring or is it good to just be aware of tendencies so you’re not that surprised? I’d say the latter because pitcher got to pitch to his strengths regardless. The hitter’s got to hit to his strength. So you’re aware of it. But to second, but way too late. safe there. Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. Brett Batty up now for the Mets. First offering and it just misses. And another ball. One out and a runner at second here in the top of the second. That one misses and it’s 3 and 0. Well, I would expect in this three 0 count, you’re taking all the way. See if he’ll walk you. And ball four, two aboard. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire at bat. First and second, one out. Mark Vientos up now for the Mets. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. Next offering is in for a strike. bows it back with two strikes. One out. Runners at first and second. In the dirt. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Runners at first and second with one gone. Swings through that one. It’s a strike out. I got to think that was the plan all the way. He set him up with a high fast ball and then bury that curveball down low to get him swinging. Now, especially with how effective pitchers work up in the zone these days, that’s a devastating combination. And next for the Mets, Cedric Mullins. edge of the zone. Called a strike 0 and one. Alvarez the lead runner at second. Ben at first. Two out of the inning. [Music] Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the wall. is going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. Off the plate and the count is one and two. Well, he missed badly with that O2 fast ball. Hitter has to understand probably wants to try to put him away with that pitch. So, got to stay ready for it. [Music] just misses with that one. Francisco Lindor up next for the Mets. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield headed for the plate. He’ll score. It’s an RBI single and they take a two-run lead. Puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI. Just kept it simple. Played Pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from and there was just no one there to knock it down. Back to the top of the Mets order now. Up to Francisco Lindor. One for one with a single so far. In there at the knees for a strike. [Music] in the dirt. Two on, two outs. But a short stop takes a ball. Got him. Outside pitch got the better of him that time, but two runs for him and they jump ahead now to the bottom of the second. It’s the Mets two and the Nationals nothing. We head to the bottom of the second. Now it’s the second baseman, Jose Tenna. Jose. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. The one in the air left field down the line and it stays fair. Throws to second and he’ll pull into second safely. The first move felt like a bit of a guess. You have to be right in those spots or things can get away from you awfully quickly. And now up for Washington, Drew Millis. That clips the zone. That’s strike one. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out. Bottom half of inning number two. That one to first. Alonso. And he handles it himself for the out. That’s a good piece of hitting right there. It’s early, but you still want to move the runner up and give your team a chance to score. That’s exactly what happened. So, you better believe your teammates are happy with you after that at bat. [Applause] Brady House stands in now and watches strike one. [Music] That’s inside and the count is one and one right through there for a strike. One away with a runner at third. Just misses the mark outside the zone. This is a situation where the hitter is looking for something up in the zone that he can get his arms extended. What you have to be careful of is that pitch that’s up that’s in on your hands. That’ll pop you up in the infield and that’s exactly what the pitcher wants. And foul ball. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another [Applause] right-hander kick. Steals. Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Eighth pitch of the at coming up. [Music] And it remains two and two. Let’s go. Got him. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strike out. You can’t be mad at yourself after an at bat like that one. And stepping in is the speedy Robert Hassel to third. That one finds the zone and it’s 0 and one. Let’s go inside. Just missed. Wait for your pitch. [Music] That one is absolutely belted. Hops over the wall and that’s an automatic double as a run scores. Well, there’s something really nice about getting yourself an automatic double like that. You get to stroll into second base without having to worry about a throw or getting your uniform dirty. And now you’re just looking for the next hitter to kind of do the same thing. Maybe put one in the gap so you can jog home as well. So the Nets lineup turns over. Luis Garcia digging in for the Nationals. Just missed. There’s a swing and a drive. That one is back and gone. Home run number 10 on the year. And they add a couple more. It’s 3-2. That’s a fun way to take the lead. Just hit one out of the park. [Applause] Sometimes too much velocity will cause a pitcher to throw through the sink and that means that there’s more force seam action than there is sink and that can turn into a really good pitch to hit. Well, we saw it right there. Didn’t miss a stitch on that baseball. He’s got himself a home run. Here’s CJ Abrams now. That’s in there. It’s 0 and one. Two down. Doon and that one popped in the air left field. NMO ranging after it. Makes the catch and that’ll do it. But they strike for three in the inning. Two on this two-run home run. It’s now a 32 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show and welcome back to the ballpark. All set for the start of the inning. Wooto now. Well, after scoring runs, this is where you’re looking for that shutdown inning. Get that hot team back in there to swing the bats. Well, these Mets doing a great job, Boog, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. They’re doing a good job of working the pitch count and they’ve been able to push a couple of runs across to score as well. And that one is lifted in the air. Lyle makes the grab. One down. Still relatively early, but with a pair of runs already on the board. The ripple effect of that high pitch count might set him up to do more damage later in this game. Now the left fielder Brandon NMO struck out looking his first time. inside just missed. Well, Chris, through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. That misses the zone and now 3 and 0. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now. Doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens and he walked him now batting. And now it’s the polar bear Pete Lonzo. He’s already homered here in this one. Oh, he’s been having a great year this year and hitting home runs at a good clip. And the matchup is very favorable. Just missed. Since debuting in 2019, no player in the majors has hit more homers than Pete Alonzo. Next pitch is outside. Last two pitches have been down in the zone. Pitcher clearly trying to get that ground ball double play, but in this count, he’s going to have to give in, elevate his pitches, and get back into this at bat. Snap throw to first, and he dives back in safely. Strike one. 22 now and the polar bear strikes out. Well, I can’t argue with that one. And clearly he was looking for something else. Anything but the breaking ball. It’s a great pitch to hit right there if you’re looking for it and kind of a gift in a two- strike count, but sometimes you just get fooled and you got to tip your cap. McNeel at the plate and takes high there and another ball. Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound. In this situation ahead 200, he’s put himself in a really good spot. Here we go. Nationals inside corner at the knees. That’s a strike. Good fast ball. And now two and two. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. [Music] line drive and this might be trouble. Lead runner touches second, headed for third. Coming home, he’ll score easily. He was all over that one. Man, that feels so good to shoot an absolute bolt the opposite way. split the gap and know that you’ve got extra bases right off the bat. That’s the kind of thing hitters dream about when they’re falling asleep at night. And now the catcher comes up to him. Francisco Alvarez one for one with a double and a run scored. And that curveball drops in there for a strike. Ball game is still tied. They can get out of this inning with a tie game. Swing and a foul out of play. [Music] Squirts away a little bit. McNeel at second with two down. Here’s a one-two. Fights it off. He’ll see another. Oh, great grab on the dive. throws from his knees and that’s a great play for the out. That was a great job of doing the math. He had the perfect angle. Diving stop completes the play and that ends the inning. Bottom of the inning up now for Washington. Paul De Young, first baseman, Paul De Young. And that’s a strike. You know, these Nationals doing a good job of simply getting the bat on the ball in this game. And the numbers back that up. And here’s a stat for you, Boo. They’re making contact with more than 85% of the pitches that they’re swinging at. It’s pretty special stuff. Not so good if you’re out there on the mound. Hot shot to third. Tosses to first. One up, one down. Now batting number 51. Dalen Lyall digging in for the Nationals and he’s already singled in this game. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. Ball one. Swanging a ball drilled center field. Mullins in pursuit. Makes the grab and there’s two gone. Now batting right fielder. Dylan Cruz digging in for the Nationals. Struck out swinging his first time. Pitch misses and it’s one and0. One and0. And another ball. Close but called a ball. And that’s ball three. A rare three ball count here. He’s been throwing strikes all day. Got to be ready to hit if you’re in the box. That one’s in there. And now three in one. Right through there for a strike. We got a full count [Music] outside and that is ball four. Well, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hitter didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. Jose Tenna digs in now. Montasa moved to first. Cruz back on a dive. This might be a steel situation, but that’s not your average catcher behind the dish. You have to be careful here. Close, but called a ball. Ball one. Well, if he’s going to steal second, you want him to go early in the count. That way, he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate. Go ahead and get it out of the way so the hitter can focus on the pitch. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly, but they get the out at first. And that’ll do it for the inning. Nationals leave one, so no change in the score. It’s 3-3. And we’re back onto the fourth. Leading off Brett Batty. Brett Batty. [Music] To the right side. Toss to D. Young. That’s the first out in the top of the fourth. Up next for the Mets, third baseman Mark Ventos. And now it’s Mark Vientos. Went down on strikes his first time through and that one upstairs. Ball one. Activity in the bullpen. Number 16 preparing to come on if needed. Irvin getting loose as well. Base is empty, one away. Top half of inning number four. Little chopper rolls foul [Music] on the ground right side and that’s just foul. Cut on and miss. Struck him out. So he picks up his sixth strike out of the ball game. We’re going to take a look at the pitch sequence of that at bat. And the thing to notice are the pitch locations. Every single one of them on the edges of the strike zone. And as a hitter, that can be pretty frustrating because you don’t expect a pitcher to be able to make quality pitches one after another like that. And so those are tough spots to do damage. And a great demonstration of pitch command. And it got him a punch out that time. Cut on and lifted in the air. And that is that. Nothing across here this half. We’re midway in the fourth. All tied up at three apiece. Back here in Nationals Park, John Chambi and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Drew Millis. Come on, delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Action in the pen down there. Shawn Maniah, the left-hander up and throwing. Holmes also getting ready. And that one pulled foul. And that’s a little high. Just not taking the bait right there. But a good pitch with two strikes. Fouled off. And they’ll do it again. [Music] That one misses and it’s two and two. Fly ball to right. Sodto gets under it, hauls it in for the maybe caught that one off the end just a little bit. Couldn’t quite barrel it up enough to really drive it. So up next, Brady House. That’s to third. Vientos handles, throws to first and they got him. Now batting center fielder Robert. Next a hit for the Nats. Robert Hassel the third. A double and a run scored his first time up. That one finds the zone. Strike one. Swings through that one for strike two. No balls, two strikes. And that’s off the inside edge. Now one and two. Two down, nobody on. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. Really great change of speeds. He goes off the off speed to the fast ball and the hitter doesn’t know what’s coming next. Swing and a fly ball. Well struck left field. NMO has it sized up. Drops into the glove and that’s the third out. Four innings in the books. Tied 3-3. Back in Washington DC. Now it’s the shortstop. Francisco Lindor. Lindor was born in Puerto Rico but actually played his high school ball in Florida. That misses the zone. And that’s ball one. Lindor goes 5 feet 11 in 31 years old and he was born in Puerto Rico. That one a little bit high. Ball two right through there for a strike. [Applause] Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. [Music] That one misses. So, a lead off walk. Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there. Pretty much gifted him first base with a quick free pass. It appears Dave Martinez is ready to dive into his bullpen as he comes out of the dugout to make the change. Mitchell Parker will depart and he’s not going to be happy with himself. New pitcher on the mound in a moment. Now pitching. on the pitch now for the Nationals. Number 16. He’s been so good against lefties. Go ahead run on base. So up next for New York, Juan Sodto for two in this one. Pitch is in there. That’s strike one. Getting a little frustrated with the strike zone. In there for a strike at the top of the zone with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. [Applause] Squirts away a little bit and the runner stays where he is. [Music] got him swinging. Well, one of the things that hitters will do is they’ll look for that red dot on the baseball as he’s coming in to let them know what the pitch is. And if they see the red dot, it’s typically a slider. But when a guy’s got a really tight one with high spin rates, very difficult to determine. And that’s probably why we saw a swing and miss right there. Just a nasty pitch. And stepping in for New York, Brandon NMO. He’s 0 for one. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Get the double. And that one missing low. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. Quick throw back in. Lead runner holds it second with one gone. Everything came together for him. Got the top of the ball a little bit, but not much. That was hit pretty hard through the infield. So, I think he’ll be happy with that swing. Definitely generated some good bats speed. A chance now to take the lead. And at this point in the game, that could be a deciding run. Here’s Pete Alonzo. He’s already homered in this game. Missed with a change up. One and0. He’s looking for a ground ball to get a double play and out of this jam. Highf fly ball out towards left field. That one’s back there. Out of here. Another homer. His second home run of the game. And the Mets jump in front. It’s 63. The brighter the lights, the more he shines. Yeah, this guy lives for big moments and right there made a statement big time. Well, Boo, clearly some frustration out there on the mound right now. I mean, that ball was so close to going foul. Would have been a long strike, but instead batter gets rewarded. Did a nice job of getting to the pitch and hitting it hard enough to get over the fence. Jeff McNeel stands in and first offering is fouled off. Still only one out here in the inning. That one down the line and it goes just foul. One down. Base is empty and that’s ruled a swing. It’s a strike out. Now batting Francisco Alvarez up now for the Mets. One for two. [Music] Right through there for a strike. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Two gone. Base is empty. But three runs across and we’re in the top of the fifth. And the next pitch is way outside. Here’s the swing of a drive left field and he knew it. A massive home run. It’s their second home run of the inning. It’s 73. That’s their third home run of the game. They’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one. They’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot. I’m excited to see that one again, but with the Stackcast data because that was a bomb. O says he drove it out of here at 115 mph. I think I heard the ball screaming on its way out and that’s some serious exit. Vo pretty elite and he caught it just right to get it up in the air as well. manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Number 16 gives way. We’ll be back in a minute with a new arm on the mound. So, out of the pen comes the rightander Jake Irvin. Well, I got to think he probably has a little extra in the tank facing his former team. And there’s not a player in the league that doesn’t get a little extra motivation when he plays against his old squad. So digging in Brett Batty. There’s the strike. Fouled off left side. Pitch misses there now. One and two. Recognized that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. Fights that one away. Still one and two. He’s mixing his pitches really well. Laid on that fast ball after seeing the change up. See if he can elevate one. I think if he does, he’ll get the swing and miss. Two outs. Caught him looking for the K. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. It’s now 73. Back after this on the show. Now pitching back now to start the bottom of the fifth and taking over on the mound Shawn Maniah. And he’s had his struggles so far this year as you can see the inflated erra looking to bring that down a little bit right here. And now it’s Luis Garcia. Garcia that clips a corner. Well, these gnats doing a good job of putting the ball into play, and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side. The numbers tell us they’re averaging more than a hit every inning, and they’ve only struck out twice. So, they keep finding ways to put their bat on the ball. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Went back to the fast ball and it was effective. Here’s CJ Abrams to hit. And that one is downstairs. Ball one. And that’s fouled off. A swing and a miss as he chases way out of the zone. Foul ball still a one and two count. That’s a ball. Went with the sweeper. Well, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat. And I’m sure there’s sometimes where a pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. Toss to Alonzo. Old man for the fifth inning. Moving along. Two quick outs. Now batting first baseman Paul Dong. Paul D Young digging in for the Nationals. Fast ball for a strike. The Mets leading by four last half of inning number five. And that’s a little bit high. And now it’s even one and one. Two down. Nobody on and a swing and a miss. And that’s that. Three up, three down for Washington. They’re down four. It’s seven to three. And welcome back to the ballpark. All set for the top of the sixth. Here’s the third baseman, Mark Ventos. And the pitch a little bit low. Ball one. Activity in the Washington bullpen. Kade Cavali looks to be getting ready for Dave Martinez. Ribalta, a hard throwing right-hander up as well. They had a swing and a miss there. One ball, one strike. Check swing went around and that is strike two. Good eye in that spot two [Music] just off the inside corner. Three and two now. He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here. I love it. Foul ball and it remains a full count. [Music] Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Lifted in the air left field. pretty well struck. Hassel sizes this one up. He makes the grab and there’s one away. Cedric Mullins up now for the Mets. Close one. Doesn’t get the call and that is ball one. And it’s fouled away. One down. Base is empty. Tap foul at the plate. Gets a piece and stays alive. fouls it off. Still one and two. That one missing inside. These first two hitters really making him work out there. Already 14 pitches this inning. battling here as he fouls it away. [Music] Still two and two after the foul ball and a popup right side foul territory. Has room and he makes the catch. Now batting shortstop Francisco Lindor. Back to the top of the lineup. Here’s Francisco Lindor. Line drive caught. Offense held in check there. To the bottom of the six we go. 456 coming up. It’s the Mets seven and the Nationals three. And we’re back. Bottom of the sixth inning. And now here is Dalen Lyall. Maniah back to work. That one finds the zone. And that’s strike one. Stirring in the bullpen for the Mets. Ryan Hley up and throwing. There’s the strike up high and it’s on two. Well, it looks like he’s wanting to work the upper part of the strike. So, what does that mean? Top hand better be working for the hitters. Adjust that side a little bit. Give yourself a chance to hit. The next offering misses. One and two to count. that’s down and in. [Applause] That’s off the mark. Ball three right through there. Got him. That K is his third of the game. Frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter and I’m sure that’s going to sit on him for a little while. You want to be ready to hit the fast ball. Sometimes you could overthink things and I think that was the case right there. Cruz batting with one down takes the strike. He swings and fouls one off. And one and two. One ball, two strikes. fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts now batting and now up for Washington Jose Tenna Tana first pitch misses two down nobody on here in the bottom of the sixth [Applause] And now two balls in a strike on the ground to first and foul ball. Let’s go DC up the middle on the run. Sends it over to first and it beats him. What a play. So, no runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left. Seventh inning coming up. It’s the Mets seven and the Nationals three. Back here in Nationals Park, we go to the top of the seventh. And stepping in for New York, Juan Sodto, swinging a miss. Next offering is fouled back. inside. It’s a ball in two strikes. Spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another swinging a miss. That one in the dirt onto first in time to get him. One away in the strikeout. Third time he struck out in this one. And definitely an individual performance you want to flush. He just hasn’t looked very comfortable up there. Just one of those days. But when you’re still winning the ball game, at least you can focus on doing your part to maintain that lead and getting that W. Now here is Brandon NMO. That’s in there. Going one. One’s the count. Base is empty. One away here in the top half of inning number seven. Ripped on the ground is second. The throw to first and there’s two away. Now batting first baseman Pete Alonszo. And next will be the Mets cleanup hitter, Pete Alonzo. He’s got a couple homers already, so can he possibly do it again? Come on, man. Of course he can. Those two he hit were legit, and he looks pretty locked in right now at the dish. And that drops in for a strike. And that one finds its way through. Zoe gets on base and keeps it going. Now batting second base Jeff McNeel. And now here’s Jeff McNeel. Struck out on just three pitches last time. That one finds the zone. Strike one. swing and a miss and he was fooled. No ball. Base knock right field and out to a board. Now batting. Here’s the catcher, Francisco Alvarez. It was a homer for him back in the fifth. Just a solo shot, but an important swing in this game. Yeah, and it was a beautiful swing as well. Everything just came together timing wise and he blasted it out of here. Just missed. He’s getting a little frustrated out there on the mound getting hit around a little bit. Let’s see if he can settle himself down. in the dirt. Blocked. Come on. Swing and a liner. Foul off to the right. [Music] Just missed. Brett Batty waiting to hit for the Mets. Alonso on second. McNeel on first with two down. Fast ball catches the corner at the knees. That’s out to center field. Hassle makes the catch and that’ll do it. Two left for the Mets, but they lead it by four. It’s 73. [Music] Now pitching for the We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Gregory Sodto coming on to face a righty here. And he’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers in those matchups are very good. And now Drew Millis. Well, both sides equally as strong. So, not a good time to try to turn him around with a relief pitcher and put him on the other side of the plate. McNeel and the leadoff hitter set down to open the seventh. That’s what a good sinker is designed to do. Get a guy to roll over a little bit, hit the ball on the ground, kill some worms while you’re at it. Oh, and now Brady House [Music] foul ball. He’s a bullpen arm that keeps the ball in the ballpark, but obviously out of the bullpen, you’re looking to limit home runs. Yeah. And that’s why he’s such a high leverage arm. Just doesn’t matter for him. He looks at attacking the zone and attacking hitters regard. Now a dive at short. Throw to first. Nicely done for the out. Just love watching this guy do everything. Swing the bat and make great defensive plays just like that. Remember, he won the Platinum Glove in 2016. You know, this guy’s the real deal defensively. Here’s the center fielder, Robert Hassel. The third. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. The Nationals down by four here in the bottom of the seventh. Yeah, come on. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. NMO hauls it in to end the inning. Now pitching. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Orlando Ribbalta. He last pitched two days ago. Orlando. Brett Batty up now for the Mets. The designated hitter Brett Batty. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Raalta 27 years old and he was born in Cuba. And a big swing and a miss. Man, he really sells the change up with that arm action. Swinging a drive deep right field. That one back. That’s long gone. He shoots one out to right. His 14th of the year. It’s 83. That’s their fourth home run of the game. They can’t stop. And they won’t stop hitting home runs in this one. Boo. They’re clearly feeding off of each other at the dish. Looks like this guy was looking out over the plate, but he was ready to turn on the inside fast ball. So direct to the pitch. Absolutely blasted out of this ballpark. So up next, Mark Vientos 0 for three in this one. And first offering is fouled off. and that one is inside ball one. Two balls, one strike. [Music] There’s the strike. 95 of that one. [Music] Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. [Music] This one popped up. Foul ground first base side puts it away for the out. Now batting center fielder Cedric Mullins. And the batter now Cedric Mullins. Go DC popped up to the left into foul ground. House hauls it in and there’s two away. Now batting short stop Francisco Lindor. Two outs. Base is empty. And next for the Mets, Francisco Lindor. That’s too low. And it’s one and0. Ripped to third. On to first. Lindor retire. And that is the inning. The Mets add one to their lead on this solo shot. It’s now 83. You’re dialed into the show. Back in Washington DC out of the bottom of the eighth. Now it’s the DH Luis Garcia. Lis Garcia. Nat. That’s a slider for a strike. Dangerous spot for that slider right there. Didn’t seem to quite finish out front and get that sharp break. Tell you what, he doesn’t want to throw that pitch again. the one-1. And that one upstairs and now it’s even up and a foul ball. He stays alive. Highfly ball out to left field. NMO ranging after it and makes the grab and there’s one away. Now batting short stop up now for Washington. CJ Abrams. The shorts stop takes a ball. The Mets leading by five here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. [Music] Swing and a ground ball. Base hit right field. So a man aboard now with one away. Paul de Young digging in for the Nationals. One for three. And first offering is fouled off. Hey, come on now. That one ran inside. Almost got him. Abrams stands at first with one out. Swinging a foul straight back inside and it hit him. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. Two on, one out. Dalen Lyle digging in for the Nationals. Way inside, gets out of the way. Always tough to turn two on a speedster like this. It’s even harder with him coming out of the left-handed batters box. You really need something hit hard on the ground that they can handle to turn two quickly. That’s off the inside corner. And that’s ball two. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. Come on, let’s go. Two on, one out. That one outside. Three balls, no strikes. Action in the Mets bullpen. Ryan Hley, the hardthrowing righty is up and loosening. Diaz warming up as well. Next offering is in for a strike. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. Abrams around third. He’ll score and it’s an RBI single and it’s 84. Comes through with the RBI. I know that was a ground ball, but it was absolutely hammered through the infield. That’s not one you’re excited to get in front of if you’re an infielder. You know they used to say charge it crazy. There comes a skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Gregory Sodto departs and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this Mets with a new arm on the mound. Tyler Rogers and he’s got a nice lead to work with. So he should come in throwing strikes, attacking these hitters. First and second, one out. Cruz will hit next. A walk and a pair of strikeouts. That one ripped but foul. [Applause] just missed. [Applause] Comes up empty. That’s strike two. Clearly was sitting on a fast ball right there and just ended up out in front of the slider. Hey, you can’t fault him for his commitment. Now he’s just going to have to battle with two strikes. Worm burner into the outfield for a knock. Here’s the throw to the plate, but it’s offline. It’s eight to five. We don’t see this a whole lot anymore where hitters with two strikes are willing to shorten up, tighten up, and try to hit the ball back up the middle other way. He was trying to hit that hole, I believe. very good at bat with two strikes. Runners at the corners here. One away. Tenna now at the plate. Just missed. Got to keep things airtight defensively right here. On your toes, ready to make a play. If you can get this to the ninth with a three-run lead, it should be a W. First and third, one down. He might want to steal second in this spot, but he’s dealing with a catcher that has one of the best pop times in the game. He needs to pick his spot very wisely. The tying run at the plate and that’s pushed foul off to the left and out of play. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Well, that’s always the key to effective pitching is getting ahead in the count. And as a pitcher, it really allows you to start expanding the zone. Hitters become defensive and all of a sudden that plate starts to get really wide. And what happens is because of the pressure, you end up committing to a pitch as a batter before you recognize what it is. And that’s what leads to the strikeout. Drew Millis digging in for the Nationals. Corner infielders guarding the lines trying to prevent extra bases. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level for him right now at the plate. It’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. And that is downstairs. And that’s ball one. Well, this is a critical spot for both the pitcher and the hitter. You can learn a lot about a guy by how he handles these pressure situations. Next pitch is downstairs. Chris, with that distraction and the speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter’s count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. [Music] Tying run at the plate and he can’t come up with it. Gets off a throw that ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. So, two runs on three hits, no errors, but two are left stranded through eight full. It’s the Mets eight and the Nationals five. And welcome back to the ballpark. We go to the ninth and stepping in for New York, Juan Stoodto. Ribalta back to work. And first offering is fouled off. Ball one there. Movement in the bullpen. Kate Cavali looks to be getting ready for Dave Martinez. And a foul ball. Next offering is downstairs. On the ground right side. Boots it. still able to fire over, but he beats it out. And the leadoff man is on with an infield single. So, a man at first. Here’s the left fielder, Brandon NMO. [Applause] lifted in the air right center field. Hassel sizing this one up. Carous. One down. Now batting the first baseman, Pete Alonszo. So a man aboard digging in. Pete Alonzo. And the first offering is not close. Sodto leads off first with one away. And that’s in there at the knees. That’s a great take right there. Even though it’s a strike with the situation, runner on first base, you want to keep the ball off the ground. And you swing at that pitch, most likely you roll into a double play. [Music] And down on strikes he goes. And there are two outs. Well, really nice job of finishing the hitter off right there. Glove side command, fast ball, firm to the outside corner. Tell you what, very difficult to do anything with that pitch even if you do swing. So, two down now and here is Jeff McNeel. And that one fouled off two outs this to third. They take the force out and that is that. So no runs here on a base hit, no errors and one left. 891 do up in the bottom of inning number nine. It’s the Mets eight and the Nationals five. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Edwin Diaz. Well, he’s the guy they hope to turn to out of the pin to lock down wins. So, this game has gone to plan, more or less. Let’s see if he can wrap it up here. So, digging in, Brady House 0 for three with two ground outs and a strikeout. House First pitch misses. Swing and a miss. Strike one. So hard to touch being at the top of the zone. 99 98 even 97 as pitchers do such a good job of teasing that part of the zone. Just elevating a little bit. It looks good because you see it for a good while as a hitter. Looks juicy and by the time you swing it’s almost in the catcher’s mid. Swag and a miss. The velocity blasted it right past him. Well, the first batter it’s always a big one for the closer. I mean, you get that punch out, you get settled in, you feel like you’re in command out there on the mound from the jump and kind of prevents any doubt from creeping into your mind or the fielders that are playing behind you that, you know, you’re going to wrap this thing up. Hessle now at the plate as he swings through strike one. Well, so many hard throwing relievers in the game these days. You would think that hitters have made the adjustment, but I don’t know if you ever get used to it. Just pumping gas out of the bullpen. So hard to play catchup. [Music] Swing and a miss. Now only one out remaining. This is definitely what a team likes to see out of their closer. Come in and just destroy all hope. First two batters, two strikeouts. See if he can strike out the side. And next is the designated hitter, Luis Garcia. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. One, no. Two down, nobody on here. Last half of inning number nine. DC. Hammers that one. Curling down the line and fouled. Well, that ball is hit pretty hard and sure had home run distance. But if you’re the pitcher out there on the mound, you execute it. Just a long strike. You go after him and finish him off. Diaz is just one strike away and that’s off the inside edge. The countdown now two and two. Whacked out to center field. That’s well struck way back there. That one is gone. Another homer. He’s done it again. his second homer of the game. And they close the gap. It’s 86. That’s exactly what this crowd wanted to see in this spot. He blasted that pitch. [Applause] A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. So, two down. CJ Abrams digging in for the Nationals and first offering is fouled off. Two-run game with two away here in the bottom of the ninth. off the mark there and it’s one and one. This is the guy they turn to to get the most important outs of the ball game, but they’re going to make him work to get this save. Let’s go. And that one is inside. Swing and a base hit. And that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. So up next, Paul D Young. Let’s go DC. [Applause] swings through that one for strike one. You know, there’s a certain point where you have to commit to what you think you see. And he guessed wrong right there. Nasty slider with just terrific bite at the end. That’s inside. [Applause] Swing and a miss. 98 on the gun with the tying run at the plate there. The home team trying to pull it out. That one misses. Two and two. [Applause] And that’s outside. Big pitch coming right here. Last thing he wants to do is put the tying run on base, but he can’t groove one either. tying run at the plate. So now two on and two outs. Didn’t miss by much right there. Just couldn’t get the call off the inside corner. Now batting. Here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Edwin Diaz out of the game. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout. And we’ll be back with a new pitcher. Ryan Stannic takes over on the mound. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves. Late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. Dalen Lyle digging in for the Nationals as the Nationals are down to their final out. edge of the zone for a strike and it’s 0 and one. Trying to keep the game alive here in the bottom of the ninth. And ball one. Boo. He never moved because he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Not even close there. And the count two and one. It’s a big opportunity right here. But I love the way he’s slowing the game down. He’s shrinking his zone, making sure he gets the pitch that he wants to hit. [Applause] and misses inside. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations and right here with a middle of the order hitter up, runner in scoring position, he’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike [Applause] and the 3-1 sliced the other way and foul. So both runners should be on the move here on the full count pitch. Yeah, this is a good chance to tie up this ball game. See if he can find some open grass in the outfield. fouls that off to the left and will do it again. [Music] Ball four. He walked in and that’ll keep the line moving. Walks out of the bullpin can absolutely kill your momentum very quickly. They’re in some hot water trying to protect this lead. Now it’s the right fielder Dylan Cruz. Yeah, don’t need much damage here. Just a base hit. Likely will score two. And there’s no doubt that they’ll feed off the energy from this crowd, right? I mean, yeah, I’d say the intensity level has gone up a few notches for sure. And that is in for a strike. 0 and one. Tough situation right here. So important as a pitcher to get ahead in the count as he did right there. So they’re all loaded up. [Applause] Oh, and this one’s blasted high and deep. It’s on its way. Out of here. Ball game. A towering shot and the Nationals walk it off for the win. [Applause] Well, a grand slam is exciting no matter what part of the game you hit it, but a walk-off grand slam, an incredible finish. Clutch swing at the bat that he’ll never forget. Truly special. And this one ends the final 108 for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami saying so long.
