His daughter playing some college volleyball. Nice spot to play. Kevin a benefactor gets to go visit. So he’s going to join us. It’ll be well 10:20 a.m. by the time we get going his time. 2:20 our time. Thomas Hall is going to join us from Blue Jays Nation. We’ll take a look at the Toronto Blue Jays. Paul SK on the mound for the Pirates. So, we’ll we’ll see what’s going on there. That’s the bright spot for the Pirates. There’s not much else to look forward to, but should be a fun one tonight out in Pittsburgh at 3:00. Our co-host for the week will join us Gretz at 3:20. We’ll talk uh with Paul Sur from Basketball Alberta. Busy offseason, of course, in the NBA and an ownership change to the Trailblazers, but we want to talk a little bit about the CBL and the Edmonton Stingers and the season that was. Of course, they fell to the Calgary Surge last week. Paul has some things he wants to talk about. So, we’ll get to that. Oil report will be by Cam Tate’s two-minute warning. Also, Tyler Uremchuck. He’s doing the Oilers Nation Ace Race. He’s trying to hit a hole in one. He’s 24 hours to do so. Last I checked, he was like 800 balls in. Fatigue is going to start to play a factor at some point for Tyler. So, uh we’ll we’ll talk to Tyler quickly. It won’t be a long one, but just uh ask him about why he’s doing it. At 4:20, we’ll look around the NFL. 4:40, five questions, Declan Krueger. At 5:00, Mark Spectre will be by and then at 5:20, we are going to talk to Justin Rankin of the Emmonton Alex. He was absolutely massive in Friday night’s win over the Toronto Argonauts. Uh doing it in a couple different ways, whether it be on the ground or through the air. Justin Rankin had himself a heck of a game and he’s someone that the Emonton Elks are going to have to incorporate into their offense as much as possible. Obviously can’t do it all the time, but uh to be kind of a workhorse back would be a big thing for the Elks. ran the ball with him 13 times. That’s a big jump from the last game. And I’m wondering if he could even do a little bit more. I mean, he can wear down defenses, but then you throw him out there in the passing game. Five targets last game, five receptions, 87 yards. Uh he’s really really developing quite nicely. And that opened up the passing game. Uh we started to see the screen game to some of the receivers. The receivers out there blocking did a really good job and Cody Fardo getting the job done. And then the Els defense making some plays. We got a strip sack. You know, it’s it’s it’s slowly coming together here for the Green and Gold. Obviously, not the toughest challenge in the Argos, but still a competitive football team. You got the Red Blocks and you get Calgary twice with the Labor Day Classic. So, Elks, lots of I think things going in the right direction for this organization. Declan Krueger, Josh Fenwick here with me as well. Declan, good afternoon. You’re back behind the board. For a long time, you had Josh Fenwick running the board during the lowdown with low tide when he was doing his practicum. He is no longer an intern. Now he’s a professional and when he leaves you had to go back and uh do some of the heavy lifting there. Hey. Yeah. Any complaints with the the mouse, the technology we’ve been dealing with? Look at Josh is being a pro already. He’s giving me cu cues here that I’m missing out on. Yeah. The we So, anyone who doesn’t know the setup back here, which I guess would be most people, there’s three different mouses that Connor or I or Brandon will have to use while on the board, two of them are pretty much shot. So, it’s not a great percentage. It’s not I mean, they’re still usable. It could be a lot worse, but no, you know, just getting back in the swing of things, it is there is certainly a lot, especially a day like today where I go, you know, right from Load to to the Greger show. There’s certainly a lot more to do back here behind the board that you kind of got to uh, you know, account for. A little less time for chitchat. Well, we’ll let you get back to it in a second. I met with Low Tide, but yeah, no, I’m good now. Now you’re good. Well, the text line’s 183341440 if anyone wants to get in on the conversation. Uh, I wanted to get your thoughts. I I know you were kind of busy this weekend, so you didn’t get a chance to get out to the Elks game on Friday night. Uh, crowd there um into it. The vibes were good. People were having a really good time. The football was solid and, you know, we got another competitive game in that one. The Elks, you know, kept it. It was close. You know, the Argos had a chance at the end. Uh, questionable decision by their punter. kind of ended up icing the game there for them. Uh, but Declan, you you do the uh Elk Nation podcast with Eddie Steel twice a week. You can watch it on YouTube or anywhere you get your podcast from. But I feel like we’re just kind of seeing this team gradually improve. And I I was really impressed with Chris Morris last week on the Jason Greger show. He came in here and he said like, “Listen, we’re committed. We’re sticking with our coaching staff. We’re sticking with these players. They don’t want to have the turnover, which we’ve seen so much in the past, like coaching staff in, coaching staff out. uh roster changes like crazy. This team is getting a chance to grow and I think you’re starting to see with Mark Kllum, you know, improving as a head coach week to week and it’s a big jump from being an assistant or a coordinator to go to the head coach because all of a sudden you got those media obligations. You got to coordinate a lot of things. Um I think JC Sheret, the play calling is getting better and so is the the job that the players are doing. Aaron Grimes, another first time head coach or not head coach, positional coach getting into it. We had him on the show last week as well. He said some really good things, but you’re just starting to see this team week by week improving. And I don’t know how good they will be this year. Uh it’s going to be tough even to get a crossover spot because the West division is so strong even though the East is pretty weak. It’ll be tough, but Declan, it is encouraging, I would say, for the fans of this football club because each week we’re just seeing them a little bit better and less mistakes, which is great. Yeah, I mean it’s the last four games have really just shown such incredible improvement for the club. And you know, funny enough, those are Cody’s four games starting at quarterback. So yeah, listen, like the the Hamilton game I actually thought was the game they probably played the best. Like I I didn’t think they played as great against Montreal as they did against Hamilton, but they got the win in that one. And then similarly, like this Toronto game, it was an improvement from the Montreal game, but there are still certainly things you look to to say, you know, they need to do this, this, and this better. Like no disrespect to Nick Arbuckle. You probably don’t want to be the team that gives Nick Arbuckle his career passing high for yards, you know, but at the same time they were one and five in the red zone. So the defense was doing something right when it was time to bite down on the mouthpiece and do it. Things are getting a lot better. Justin Rankin needs to touch the ball. I’ve said this multiple times on the on Elks N on Elk Central, Elks 101. He’s the best dual threat back in the league. He can do so much. She’s got 427 yards receiving this year, around 400 rushing the ball, second most receptions for the Elks. Like he I don’t think he’ll get there, but he could be damn close to a,000,000 guy. And every time he touches the ball, you see why he’s the MP for me so far to this point in the season. Things are getting better on both sides of the ball. And I think the Elks have a lot of momentum and a lot to look forward to. Now, that said, things need to happen with other teams to help you out. You can only control what you can control, but I think they’re definitely going in the right direction and it’s got to keep up this weekend against a basement dweller in Ottawa. Absolutely. And news for the Ottawa Reds at quarterback. Uh looks like Drew Brown will not be playing. So, you know, that doesn’t mean they’re just going to roll over like we’ve seen in the CFL before. Players come in and can have uh impacts and and play good ball and sometimes you can overcome that. But uh for the Ottawa Red Blacks, Drew Brown not going to play in this one. Not ideal for them. Dustin Crumb taking the first team reps for Ottawa. We’ll see what happens. Uh the Emmonton Alex obviously this season, they’re not going to take anyone lightly. It doesn’t matter who they are. Uh what the personnel is, they got to go out there and focus on playing their game. But yeah, I thought it was impressive. Uh Joel Delanco was flying around the field. I thought Cordell Jackson had a really good game getting the sack. Uh Niles Morgan kind of doing his thing as usual. Kobe Williams I thought made some plays were strong and uh yeah special teams was good too. So it’s it’s encouraging. Long way to go but uh certainly better than what we saw to start the season where it just you know just looked flat at times. There’s a little bit more energy with this group and who knows who knows what’s going to happen. Maybe there’s some additions to be made once we get past Labor Day. Some NFL cuts. Maybe guys want to you know rather than sit on a practice roster maybe they want to come north play some football and things will change certainly with the rosters on that one. Uh 183341440. Uh we’re going to have Kevin Woodley on this show obviously talking goalending. Has he heard anything about Stuart Skinner and an extension possibly? Is there anything else going around the NHL? We’ll look at that. Uh also goalending, you know, what are you doing during the offseason? We’re kind of in the dog days. Players probably take a little bit more time, you know, get a little rest, relaxation, but what does a goalie do at this point? Uh Rod says, “Please don’t say next year with the” He says, “Eskimos the Elks and Oilers tired of hearing that every year.” I don’t know if we did say next year. Maybe we did. I I mean, hey, this regime, fair or unfair, has expectations to turn this thing around quicker because we’ve seen it before. So, Rod, I agree with you. Like, in years past, we might have said, “Oh, this is positive.” You know, maybe they keep it going and next year something can happen. But we’ve seen this before. We saw this Chris Jones led team or maybe well was after the firing. You know, they started to win some games week nine. I believe they picked up their first win last year then had a little bit of a run but it wasn’t enough and then we saw the turnover. So I I think that that’s not a luxury that this group might have. You know, internally they might be saying we’re rolling with it. We we’re going to keep this group and we’re not feeling any pressure to do any changes or anything like that. But I think the fan base wants to see a winning product and hey they got to see it last night Friday night. they’ll have a chance to potentially see it maybe next week after the Labor Day rematch or during the Labor Day rematch. But uh yeah, that I get that and it was the same way for the Oilers for a long time, detective of Darkness, nobody wanted to hear about next year. They’re just frustrated with the losing that’s happening. So, we will we’ll have to see it. It’s going to be a weekby- week thing. But I think with Cody Fardo, Wonder Center, like you know what you’re going to get just a little bit more. uh you’re not relying potentially on the big play, which I think with Trey Ford that was a thing that would happen occasionally. Like the the offense would run dry and then he’d make a ridiculous play, you know, 15 20 yards in the back field running around, find a receiver that broke free. That’s not going to happen with Cody Fardo, right? He’s not going to make those types of plays. He can uh kind of dink and dunk you to death, move the ball downfield. They had some really good drives last game. Uh exchanged field goals. There was a lot of field goals in the first half. uh but eventually did hit per but yeah I mean it’s it’s obvious and Declan said it the the key to this team they they have to get Justin Rankin involved in the football game the more the better physically as much as he can do and maybe we’ll talk to him about that but you know we see running backs in other leagues take the ball 2025 carries if you can do that with him I mean that’s going to go a long way uh some other news around the sporting world for those fans of the association and we’ll get into this with Paul sir a little bit Bobby Webster promoted to head of basketball operations for the Toronto Raptors. Declan, now Bobby Webster’s been there for a long time. Kind of the right-hand mind, uh, right-hand man to us. What do you think about this one? Does much change here? I couldn’t imagine it, Will. I couldn’t imagine. So, also Messiah, like his time in the Sun had come to pass. He Listen, man, all credit in the world for getting Kawaii and winning that 2019 championship. That ring will be on your finger forever. That banner will hang forever. this team will always have that. But like aside from that, what what what were the stats, man? It was like three out of five years he traded a first round pick for a player on on an expiring contract. Yeah, he couldn’t keep Kawhi Leonard. Like I don’t listen, he gets a lot of grace for winning that championship as he should. It’s really tough to do. It’s really tough to trade a guy like Demar De Rozan who’s I know he’s not hometown, but hometown superstar for lack of a better phrase for a question mark in Kawaii. And it paid off and he deserves credit for it. But outside of that, he was he I don’t think he was doing a lot of the right things and he was given a lot of grace because of that championship. And it just comes a point when it’s time to move on. So, I don’t know what it’s going to look like under Bobby Webster. I assume, you know, it’s we we won’t hear much unless we hear a lot. And I know that sounds a little vague, but that’s kind of how it goes with general managers in the NBA. So, I don’t know. Yeah. Excited excited for the regime. I’m a Heat fan, though, so I guess I hope I hope he tanks the team. One one less team to compete for the playin every year. Here’s here’s my thing. If Kawawaii wasn’t going to stay with that team, what could you have said to make him stay? Because they went through the East. I mean, in the final, Kevin Durant got hurt, which, you know, like it or not, it benefited the Raptors. Was there anything you think he could have said? Because I think Kawhai was dead set on going home. Yeah. Yeah. No, I don’t think there’s anything he could have said. I don’t think there’s anything that could have been done. Listen, man. Like, Canadians are going to hate to hear this, but a lot of guys just don’t want to play in Canada. Kawawaii was clearly one of those guys. He’s a Southern California kid and you know when he he played his high school or sorry he played his college ball out in California. He played his pro ball in Texas which isn’t California but you know it’s nice and warm there. It’s just different man. It’s just different coming to Canada. You know what I mean? He didn’t want to be there. And I No, listen. They won the championship and he had he was finals MVP and they could have given him all the money available to him. Like it was all on the table for him and he didn’t take it cuz he just didn’t want to be there. And that’s the human element of it sometimes. So yeah, I think then there is that stigma. I remember uh was it Pat Patterson for the Raptors? Patrick Patter. He was cold. He was bad, but he was cold. He had I think it was a story in whatever that like where you pro athletes would write articles. It was like founded by Derek Players Tribune. Players Tribune about how like he got traded to Toronto and it was like get me out of here. I don’t want to be here. And then he walked down the street and like talking with people and helped him out. that like slowly changed him and all of a sudden he’s like I love it here. Like this is where I want to be. I think that there’s still that stigma about the Raptors like I don’t know if I want to play in Toronto, that sort of thing. Then they get there. Great city, great fans. And if you’re winning basketball games, I I would feel like that’d be enough to keep you. But obviously Kawhi Leonard had all the power. And uh I just I remember thinking like this just seems inevitable that he’s leaving and it’s going to suck when he does. I still remember sitting in our condo on the couch looking at my phone like it finally happened. He officially decided to leave and Ashley probably looked at me like I was a weirdo. But that was it. He also did it right because no one could be mad at him. Like no Raptor fan could be mad at him for leaving. You know what I mean? You get a ring and came there for six months a ring. People have like, you know, talked about if if Conor McDavid one day were to leave, but if he got you a cup and played 10 plus seasons, sure he might get booed. Gretzky got booed, right? But I think a lot of Oiler fans would be like, “Okay, he got us a he did what he was supposed to do.” You think not? You think people would hate it? I think people would be pretty mad. What if he’s like 35 and decided that’s enough. I’m going to go live out my dream. 35 seems like a decent. But here the problem. Here’s the problem. 35 does sound like a good age for an athlete in the scenario you you’ve laid out. I still think Conor McDavid’s going to be like the second or third best player in the world when he’s 35. You know what I mean? So, it’s a little bit different when you’re still that good. Like, if he was 35 and he was putting up 40 points a season, that’s one thing. I think he’s going to be 35 and he’s going to be putting up 105. You know what I mean? And that will be tough to say goodbye to even if he has one year ring in my opinion. I mean, it it’s interesting. I I Hey, I hope he plays in Edmonton his whole career. I I love those stories of the athletes that start somewhere and finish. But I I don’t know if if he were to get the city couple rings, maybe that might soften the blow if it were to happen. We’re talking huge hypotheticals here. Delin, one last question before we get to break here. Uh and I want to ask the people out there as well. 183341440. I went and got my haircut on Friday. Had some things to do over the weekend. Had to get it chopped off. A guy came in after me and his hair looked like unbelievable. top-notch haircut, but he was getting it cleaned up. How often does the average man get their haircut? Gotta be once a month. Once a month. Like that. I full confession, I’ll grow my hair out, then I’ll just go chop it off. Three to four months for me. What about you? Yeah. Like nowadays, I do it a little less frequently. And a actually a big reason for that is the time the barber shop is open verse like my hours here at sports 1440 plus distance to because it’s like deep north side. Yeah. Um so I’m probably going like once every couple once every couple and a half months now. But I I’m out of I’m out of touch. It should be once every month. I’d love to just get people’s thoughts on that. Like how often do you go to the barber and get it cleaned up? Like if I didn’t wear hats all the time and I had good hair, maybe I might be doing that once a month. But this guy, his hair was immaculate. It looked like perfect. I didn’t I should have stuck around just to see what they were actually doing. Maybe just cleaning up the sides, clean up the back a little bit. But his hair looks good. That’s just my question kind of the day for people. How often do you go to the barber shop, get it trimmed? Hacksaw says six weeks. Cord oil, four to five weeks. You guys are way more constant than I am. But I like to grow my hair out, let it get a little nasty, and then uh clean it up. Change the look entirely. Everyone notices when you get your haircut once every 3 or 4 months. You’re not surprising. Uh you’re not, you know, going under the radar at all. But let me know. 1833411440. How often do you get a haircut? Maybe we’ll ask our next guest that he’s on vacation. Maybe he’s just letting it grow out. Summer flow. Coming up next, we’ll talk goal tanning with Kevin Woodle in Gold Magazine. It is the Jason Greger show here on Sports 1440 and Oilers Nation, Facebook, YouTube, and X. I go more to get my beard aligned.” Yeah, if you got a big long beard, that’s another crucial part of it. They always ask me, “You want me to touch up the facial hair?” And I just say, “No.” Rod just got mine cut every two years. How long do you grow it out, Rod? Colin says he goes to his barber 10 to 14 days. Every 10 to 14 days. I asked if I’m his best customer and he said he has a guy who comes in every three days so he looks fresh. Like how much can your hair change in 3 days? Like maybe it grows really fast. I don’t know. That just seems unnatural. Brandon from Victoria 3 to 5 months. Joe says every two weeks. And then EJ first text ever. Hey boys, I get my hair cut cleaned up every two weeks with a beard trim. The beard trim makes sense. Also, McDavid would not look right in any other jersey. I think you’re right. Uh, we got more. We’ll get to it in a second here, but we got to get to our first guest of the show. It’s around the NHL brought to you by McDonald’s. Cool down with $2 Sundays and snacks, thighs, shakes, or check out for the exclusive $1 cone deal delivery at McDonald’s. We bring in Kevin Woodley from Mingle Magazine. Kevin, how you doing today? Oh, I’m doing good. As you can tell by the backdrop, Connor, it’s uh I’m doing I’m just being a good parent, helping my kids settle into her first year of university. She’s playing div 2 NCAA volleyball. So, also proud par proud parent uh moment for me and she just happens to be going to school in Hawaii. So, uh hence the backdrop and this is these are the sacrifices that we make as uh as sports parents. That is a picture perfect backdrop. Like if you told me that was just a screen you had behind me, I would believe it. That looks way too nice. Um, my question for you, Kevin, now was there a debate like did she have any offers from Wisconsin or was it Hawaii from the start? Uh, there were there were offers from back east. Um, a pretty attractive one from from a university in Vermont. Uh, but let’s just say that as soon as this one came in, uh, everything else was in second place. I I would think so. That is pretty outstanding. Uh, which island are you guys on? Big Island uh University of Hawaii Hilo she’s going to so dip 2 um NCAA program and just getting to meet her teammates and settle into her dorm this week and mom’s been down here a little ahead of me and truth is mom could handle everything get her settled in for school. The reality is I’m just here to make sure my wife actually comes home. Yeah, I mean I would not blame her. Oneway ticket and just kind of hang out. It is beautiful out in Hawaii. I’ve been there only for about eight days I think and uh certainly would like to get back out there. So we won’t take up too much of your time. and we do appreciate you joining us uh live on location here, but let’s talk a little offseason goalending. We’re kind of in the dog days of summer here, August 18th. Obviously, we know NHL players, there’s no real off season anymore. Maybe you take a week or two travel, but then you’re kind of getting back into the grind. What do you think the average NHL goalender is up to these days? You know, it’s interesting, Connor, because it it really varies widely. And you know, the guy that kind of exemplified this the most, even though he’s not playing anymore, is Carrie Price. Like even and we’ve talked about this before on the show about how one of the things we’re seeing offensively and in terms of the increase in skill offensively is that players are kind of doing what goalies have done for the last 20 years. They’re spending all their time in the offseason now working on their skills. You know, I was out a couple weeks ago watching Connor Bard uh and Mlin Celibbrini amongst a group of pros. K Johnson was out there now skating with a skills coach working on specific things through small area games that were based it was Kybo hockey and they based everything they do in the offseason as skill players on research over the past couple years what types of plays lead to the most dangerous scoring chances and then let’s put that into a small area game and work on those skills. So that’s the kind of thing that I think only in the last 5 10 years has become common from players. That’s something goalies have done for the last 20, you know, like as early as July and August in there working with goalie coaches. Um, usually private guys, sometimes they h also happen to be the team guy for for certain goalies trying to work on their skills. Now, Carrie, he was the outlier and he also happened to be the best of his generation in my opinion. And you know, a little aside, should be a first ballot hall of famer. None of this make them wait stuff like they’re doing. But he wouldn’t touch the gear. put it in the garage, didn’t look at it, didn’t touch it, never got on the ice until August 1st. And then primarily his focus was more um not so much like goalie specific, but being a part of the daily skates, the pro skates they would have in Colona that frankly were like an all-star game with guys like Shay Weber out there like just it was incredible. And he would just he just want to sort of feel the puck and work on his timing. And so that is that’s sort of the discrepancy. There are guys that are in there from June on working on technical tactical things like very specific skills and there are other guys like Carrie that didn’t need to. Um they got that work once they hit training camp and they just wanted to get out there and feel the puck. So it is a wide range. I would say that most guys by now by mid August have done a little bit of both and you’ll see it mixed in. maybe a lot more technical stuff through August and then as we get towards the end of August and captain skates, guys going back to their home cities to start to skate with teammates, that’s where you get a lot more of the flow drill stuff, you know, the wide open open scrimmage style stuff quite often. Now, captain skates will have a either a skills coach or somebody from outside the organization who does skills coaching come in and run almost like a practice situation. So, you get the same types of drills you get in practice and then a scrimmage at the end. For goalies, that’s kind of the last step. Most of them, again, Carrie being a very notable exception, but most of them want to avoid the wide openen scrimmage stuff for as long as they can because if you do too much of it in the summer, the reality is you can only survive out there is if you’re cheating a little bit. It’s really hard to sort of play everything straight up when so much of it is east west. Or maybe maybe in the past couple years that’s that’s more reminiscent of an actual NHL game. But for the most part, guys tried to avoid that too late. So, it’s a lot of technical work right now, you know. Um Stuart Skinners up in Colona has been for a while and I think he’s staying through first week of September. For him it would be taking a lot of off ice strength training and specific movement patterns that they imitate off the ice and then bringing it onto the ice in sort of one rep tight technical situation. So that’s the variance. Everybody’s different. We had a PWHL goalie on this year. She went to the final Gwenna Phillips from Ottawa Charger. We had her on the in goal show this week. She was the MVP of the um Isabel Cup playoffs in the PWHL. Promptly won a world championship down the stretch with USA. Promptly put everything in her car, not goalie gear, and basically went off the grid, disappeared, and camped all throughout California, including Euseite for like a month. So, there’s that wide discrepancy of get me right back on the ice. I want to work on my details to I do not want to see the pads until it’s time to get ready for the season. So, if we could, can we just go a little bit more into Stuart Skinner there and, you know, what you’ve seen from his game, what things he can do off the ice to improve and then translating it into the on ice drills. Like, what kind of things would he be working on? I I mean, I I haven’t been up there this summer yet. Um, went up there last summer before he was in with Adam Francilia and got to see the work that other guys were doing. I think I’m trying to think of the NHLers that were there at the time I was there because it it kind of rotates out week by week. Obviously, I mentioned Stuart standing up there for a while, but a lot of um the off stuff is quite funky. Like, it’s uh slideboard work, a lot of slideboards, uh with weights and resistance, whether it’s with bands or a combination of bands and weights. Uh there’s one where you’re actually dropping into a butterfly on a slideboard, but you’re almost like suspended a little bit. Um there’s all kinds of different things. So, what you would do is you would take like if there’s a situation on the ice like going into your post in reverse. So, you’d be train and then exploding off of it. So, you’d be training using the slideboard and some form of resistance, um, either weighted or just bands, moving in the same pattern, trying to make sure that you are isolating and firing the muscles that we need to fire to move most efficiency on once we get off the ice. And so, you train that um, in this sort of unique area that they’ve got set up. You might take it into a regular gym as well. There’s obviously things you can do in terms of explosive, more plyometric, for lack of a better term, type movement. So again, train the same muscles and then later in that same day, you’ll hit the ice and a lot of the work on the ice will now you’re connecting all those muscles you’re training to the actual movement you’re training it for. And so you’re going through that strength work and then now you’re you’re feeling it in the gym and now you’re feeling it on the ice and you’re actually translating it on the ice. And again to make sure that what we’re working on off the ice directly translates I I use the maybe this is because the one we saw with Deon Levi last year up in Colona working with Francilia but you know that that going into the post and then coming out there are things you can do to replicate that off the ice and then once you get off the ice or sorry on the ice you’re making that exact same movement and in theory you should be able to isolate those same muscles and explode using them rather than allowing your body to sort of move into shapes or pattern. patterns that don’t allow you to access that same muscle in the same manner that there’s some old habits that can creep into your game where you know quite often like we’ll see it. I I’ll give you one example Connor because people might be able to relate to this. When we think of doing squats and back squats and you think of that sort of the lower back almost rounding with the chest out and the butt up or sorry butt sticking out, chest up, that actually that type of movement isn’t what we want as a goalender because as soon as that butt sticks out, you’re kind of turning off some of the muscles in the inside of the leg, the adductors muscles that you need to move east west on the ice and everything’s about east west. So, it’s not just about sort of training the different muscles. It’s about training the shape you hold when you play goal so that the muscles we need, the specific ones, you’re in a position to activate them and access them. So, you know, keeping a neutral pelvis through the movements you do in the gym so that once you get on the ice, you can keep that neutral pelvis, hold that form, and not sort of fall back into that chest out, butt out type of stance that reduces or limits the explosiveness, the access to those muscles, uh, and the efficiency with which we can move. So, it’s a lot. It can get quite into the nitty-gritty of of what a certain position physically means to our access to those muscles and ability to push with them most effectively and efficiently. But these are the types and this zenth degree stuff that they’re working on up in Colona typically that’s the kind of thing that they’d be working through around now in mid August with Steuart Skinner and the challenge for him as well as for Calvin Picker. Doesn’t work up there but obviously does his own thing. Man, this is a short summer for the second year in a row. really hard to sort of get back to basics or try and change or rebuild anything. There’s a lot of just sort of restorative process you have to go through before you get to that. Ryan Miller used to tell us it took him a month to train his body to move like a human again after each season because being a human and being a goalender are almost two different entirely shapes to the body. So you got to let it heal first and then you go to go to work on making sure it works for the goalending specific stuff. Kevin Willie of InGole magazine and NHL.com joining us here on the Jason Greger show. Connor sitting in and uh off the ice very important things to talk about as well. Stuart Skinner entering his final contract or final year of the contract with the Edmonton Oilers. Have you heard anything about a potential new deal in Edmonton? Yeah. No, I haven’t really. Um and you know, I’ve seen some of the numbers that have been thrown around and and this is and we’ve been talking about this for over a year like for all the you know, criticism. Yeah, time’s justified in the short short samples with little windows here and there. Um, but all the contract discussion like like the reality is Stuart Skinner at 2.6 was a really good bargain. And so the decision that was coming and it’s after this year and whether that that that comes in the form of waiting or a negotiation in the early going I don’t have inside information there but this was always the sort of big moment that was coming for this organization. To me for for all the second guessing and criticism he’s a no-brainer at 26. But that might change depending on what the math looks like on a new contract. And as we’ve seen teams consistently locking down their own guys as we approach this new window of expanding cap space. Uh that was the trend. Decision time for the Oilers. Like where do they see him? Do they see him at the upper end of a Joey Decord type situation? Like Seattle saw Decord as a number one and locked him in as a number one, you know, before he could post numbers that commanded, you know, he get into the area of the eight and a halfs. I mean, look what Colorado did. Not just going like wisely in my opinion. They go and they acquire Mackenzie Blackwood. They realize that in their system he’s going to post numbers. Let’s lock him in at five rather than wait till he has a great year and now we might be looking at a at a ticket closer to what Thatcher Demco got in Vancouver. So, you know, where the Oilers come out on that, I don’t know. But it’s going to be a fascinating decision because when you talk to people around the league, you know, if he were to hit the open market, despite the fact that so few do and there’s typically demand for goalenders, you know, they’re not sure that, you know, how high that ticket goes. So, the Oilers have to be careful here in terms of what type of commitment they make for a team that’s usually, at least to this point, trying to win a cup without spending big on that position. Yeah, it’s going to be something because if he does get that payday, uh even with a cap going up, like you’re going to have to try to, you know, make some savings elsewhere in the lineup. So, certainly a fun storyline to watch there. And, uh, one more before we let you go here, the Detroit Red Wings goending room. Uh, some say a little bit crowded there. Uh, any thoughts on a player move in with them or do you think they just kind of grinded out with what they’ve been doing? Well, again, I saw those rumors. I think it was a report that, you know, that the Oilers had reached out to Detroit about one of their young prospect goalenders. Um, listen, like to me the one you ask about first and foremost, and this is not a slight in the other guy, but is Trey Augustine. Augustine’s already going back for a third year at the NCAA this year. And there is some buzz around the goalending world in the industry that, you know, as the Detroit Red Wings have continued to sort of put positional roadblocks up in front of him in terms of having depth charts that don’t give him a window to the It’s ironic like they don’t have any fixed solutions at the National Hockey League level. like they’re going through UFA. he should be the future and yet they continue to just stockpile people in front of him to the point where you hear he wonders about the plans and he watches what happens as I’ve heard it to Sebastian Kosa who keeps having the same roadblocks put in front of him like you know adding Jack Campbell to the minor leagues when this is a year you would think Sebastian Kosha should have played a whole bunch going out and getting Peter Morazzic so that you had Cam Talba Alex Lion and Peter Morazzic like the depth chart They just keep stacking guys up there even though none of them have the upside of Trey Austinine. If you’re Trey Augustine and he is a like one of the most legit prospects goalending wise in the entire league. Like I believe in the talent. I believe in the approach. I’ve talked to people around him that think it is a short line between him and the National Hockey League. But you’ve been drafted by a team that tends to want to let them wait and and and marinate in the minors longer than others. You have a choice next year. you go back to school for one more season and let’s not forget you can get paid in the NCAA now and get into an organization you can make more in the NCAA than you do in the American Hockey League. So, are you in a rush to get into an organization that’s going to leave you in the American Hockey League like they have Sebastian Kosa? Heck, Sebastian Kosa played ECHL games. Or do you want to go to an organiz one more year in school and I can choose where I go? That would be an interesting one if I’m Trey Augustine. And that’s the type of buzz you start to hear. Don’t know if it’s true, but that’s sort of the and other teams are definitely circling around both that and Sebastian Kosa. If the Red Wings are able to get Augdine in, if they indeed see him as the goalie of the future, then what does that mean for Sebastian Kosa? I know there are teams that are looking at him as a buy low possibility with still lots of upside. And so again, it’s fascinating. I’d be looking at it too if I was the Oilers because their depth chart isn’t quite as deep on the prospect side. but at the same time doesn’t solve your doesn’t I mean Augustine could solve a lot of things in a year or two but none of them are ready necessarily to come right in and fix the other problem we talked about which is what do you do in the short term if indeed you see that as a problem that is interesting and yeah I like what you say there just like the roadblocks putting up there by the Red Wings could he just stick around for college and sign somewhere else or is all of a sudden there an urgency to maybe move on from him it’s going to be something to watch out for this season well Kevin go to the beach uh go go have a beer on a nice patio Enjoy the beautiful weather out there. Yeah, we’re going to talk some blue jays in a second, but the the the the conversation here. Haircuts, when do they happen? Um, a lot of people tell us they just do it themselves. Um, in terms of cutting hair, um, since I I heard you guys talking about it as I was coming on, I could not believe people cut their hair in the backyard. That is crazy. Yeah. I mean, well, let me ask you this, Thomas. How often do you cut your hair? Oh, I I get it cut every like couple months. And quite quite frankly, I could probably even do it uh sooner than that. It grows pretty quick nowadays. So, but uh yeah, usually every two months. See, I like cuz I just got a haircut and I was at the barber and I just see people coming in that have really nice hair and I guess that’s why they have nice hair is because they take care of it. They get it cut up, you know, every couple weeks, maybe every couple months. For me, I grow it out pretty long and then just go short. So, that was kind of where the question came from because some people say they’ll go every three, four weeks, make sure they keep it clean. The guys with the the big beards will do it a little more often, keep the beard tight. So, I guess I I suppose I get it. But, uh, yeah, a lot of people just take care of it in the backyard, and I I guess that’s efficient as well. You don’t even have to go sit in the barber shop. You just handle it yourself. Now, a guy who is handling himself as much as he can, uh, Paul Ske with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He’s going to be on the mount tonight with the Jays in town. They’ll counter with Kevin Gosman and the Toronto Blue Jays playing some good ball right now. Top spot in the AL East, 73 and 52 on the season. Uh, when you get a guy like Skins, I mean, that’s appointment television. And Jays have to be ready for him because despite the record and he plays on a bad team, this guy is an absolute stud. He really is. He is one of the best pitchers in all baseball right now. He’s somebody that has the absolute some of the best stuff that we have ever seen at this level where the he can blow it by you with his triple digit fast. He’s got a devastating wipeout slider. He’s got what’s called a splinker, too, which is a a mix between a splitter and a sinker. And it comes at you like 98 99 miles per hour with it’s basically like Kevin Gosman’s splitter, but if you cranked it up to 100, um that would be pretty much what it looks like coming out of this shoot from Paul Skins. And sure, he does not have the best team around him playing on the Pirates. That is uh certainly uh evident. But in terms of run prevention, there aren’t many better players you can have on your pitching staff than Paul Ske. So when you take on a pitcher like that, I mean, obviously the Jay’s bats have been electric at times this season. What is the game plan here? Are you just trying to kind of wear him down? Uh take as many pitches as you can. What’s the game plan? Yeah, so it’s certainly going to be interesting to see how the Blue Jays handle him. I think if I was in the hitting room with David Hopkins and the rest of the Blue Jays coaching staff, my approach against Skins would be tailoring more towards the Blue Jays approach where they’re trying to grind him out. Elevate hitch pitch count. Try your best to foul off as many tough pitches you as you can. And that’s going to be easier said than done against a guy like this. But he is somebody that over his his very brief major league career, he is somebody that if you have that type of approach, you can kick get him out of games early. He only went four innings in his last outing against the Milwaukee Brewers who they have a very similar type of approach in that regard to the Blue Jays where they’re one of the better team one of the better teams in baseball at being able to execute that type of game plan where you’re putting up these really tough at bats and make making pitchers work a lot out there. And so I think that’s probably the best hope they can have against a guy like Paul Skins because if you try and go toe-to-toe with him and match your best stuff with his best stuff, nine times out of 10, you’re probably going to be going down or going uh back to the dugout on three strikes. Now I want to ask you on the flip side, I mean the Pittsburgh Pirates have not been very good this season. Is it, you know, that situation like we just got to get a couple like we we we trust in Gossman to get the job done? I know, you know, home runs against his team has been a bit of an issue as of late here, but if we can just get a couple, maybe that’s enough to get us past this and, you know, on to the next one because we know that skins, you know, if you wear him down, he’s he’s going to get his he’s going to provide some troubles, but maybe we don’t need that much run support to beat this team. Yeah, it’s certainly possible. I mean, the Blue Jays had this similar type of situation against Jacob Deg Grom on Friday where he absolutely duled against them, but only for five innings. And once the bullpen came in, that’s when the Blue Jays were able to scratch and claw their way back into the game and ultimately pull out another insane comeback win, which they have amazingly been able to do so many different times this season. So yeah, if they’re able to scratch maybe a run or two off Paul Skins, maybe get him early in the game before he really starts to settle in, then hopefully by the fifth or sixth inning, the game is still close. Blue Jays can can hopefully on their end of things help neutralize the Pirates offense and uh once the Pirates hand things over to the bullpen, hopefully that will provide an opportunity for the Blue Jays to really break this game open. Thomas Hall, Blue Jays Nation joining us here on the Jason Greger show. Connor Hally sitting in. Any questions? 1833411440. Now Thomas, I just want to ask you going into the playoffs, the Jays, you know, haven’t locked down yet, but it looks like they’re trending in that direction. What would your rotation look like when it comes to starters? Let’s just say games one through three. What order are you going in? So, and this is going to come as a with a big caveat, but if Shane Bieber looks like the type of ace pitcher that he was prior to undergoing Tommy John surgery, you can make a very compelling case that he should be your game one starter. With the experience that he has, the talent that he possesses, there aren’t many better options out there to having a game one starter than Shane Bieber. But if for some reason that does things don’t play out that way, um I would be very comfortable handing Kevin Gosman the ball in game one. Heck, with the way Max Scherzer has been pitching too, he would be another great option. And I think in terms of, you know, if we’re looking at your top three starters here, Heberg, Gossman, and and Sherzer are probably it. Um, but that does make for an a very interesting situation in terms of who gets a potential uh fourth rotation spot between Bereios Basset and Eric Lowour. Now, Bieber, I believe his last start, 70 in his pitch, zero earned runs, six hits, no walks, four strikeouts at 90 pitches. What have you heard about Bieber and his time with Buffalo? He has looked fantastic. um it’s, you know, it comes against minor league hitters, so you do have to take that with a little bit of a grain of salt. But one thing that has stood out to me is the type of stuff that Bieber has shown where his fast ball in particular has looked great so far coming off Tommy John surgery where pre-injjury he was hovering around 91 92 uh miles per hour with the fast ball. But now he’s being able to dial it up to 93 94 and maintaining that velocity deep into his outings as well which is always the key. And then the slider too, like it has the same type of bite that it did before he missed a chunk of time for surgery. And he’s now throwing a different change up too where it’s almost more of a spike change up and he’s been able to get a lot more swing and miss with that pitch during his rehab outings with the Blue Jays as well. So, from all indications, I mean, we’ll we’ll see how he fares on Friday against the Marlins, but he has checked every single box that the Blue Jays have been looking for as he makes his way back from Tommy John surgery. Thomas, when you look at this Jay’s team right now, like plenty of good stories and I will be the first to admit I’m kind of a pessimistic Jay’s guy. Like, I’ve I’ve been through it for a long time. I I always kind of question them until they get there. But, this team has had a lot of really good stories individual and as a team. I want to ask you which player surprised you the most this season. Yeah, it’s a great question because there are so many to choose from and that’s been this this team’s identity for much of this season. Um, but I think if I had to put it on one particular guy over a full season’s worth of results, I’d probably say George Springer because not only is he somebody that looked like he was towards the end of his career, like the last couple of seasons for him were not good at the plate, he was a below league average hitter, statistically speaking. He was somebody that was still hitting for a bit of power, but last season he had a 220 batting average, a 371 slug. And then you fast forward to this season in his age 35 season, no less, he has broken out completely. I don’t know where he found the fountain of youth, but I would love to know his secret because the way he has rebounded this year has been excellent. Um, now like playing DH a lot of the time almost exclusively now has really benefited him. It’s allowed him to stay fresher over a long 162 game season. But the adjustments that he has made with the Blue Jays hitting coaches uh early in spring training and throughout this year has uh has gotten him back to the all-star player that he was um towards the early part of his Blue Jays career and of course throughout his entire stint with the Houston Astros. And it has completely changed the dynamic of this Blue Jays lineup where we saw early on where if you got through the top three hitters in this lineup, Bo Bashette, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and Anthony Santandere as an opposing staff, you were pretty much set like you were good to go. But now that George Springer has come on the way he is and I I do want to give give a little bit of love to Alejandro Kirk too because he’s been a big element in this as well where the lineup has lengthened so much for Toronto now that you’re able to add Springer and Kirk to the mix of Bette and Guerrero and even Barger now too. Um it has really fallen into place beautifully for the Blue Jays and I don’t think anything h anything like that happens as well as it does without this resurgence from Springer. Was Alejandro Kirk stealing second the play of the year? It might have been um that was like honestly I was at that game. I was I was covering it for Blue Jays Nation and um I gotta say the applause that he got from the crowd was louder during his stolen base than it was when he homered or when he delivered the go ahead uh go ahead run uh hit in the in late in the game. So um that was uh that was something to remember. I I remember um you know as the game was ending I was packing up ready to go downstairs and talk with Schneider and everybody after the game. So, I didn’t even see that Vlatty ran over and ripped second base out of the ground to give Kirk and um like that was just is such a great moment for this guy and it truly exemplifies the type of year that he’s had where everything is going right for him and the fact that he gets a green light and is able to steal second base like that just it it’s something that can put a smile on your face. Absolutely. The the crowd response is fantastic. and Vlad getting the bag after. I just thought, okay, vibes are high with this team right now. They’re having fun. They’re enjoying it and hopefully they can keep it going for a little bit longer here because it is great. Everyone’s into Jay’s baseball right now and uh hopefully it will continue. How long do you think it would take you to hit a hole in one? Like the odds say if you hit enough it might drop eventually, but I heard the pin to start the day was at the front of the green which makes it a little bit tougher. You want to kind of roll onto it. So we’ll talk to Tai at 4:00. Look around the NFL at 420. You might have to get Dan to recap the weekend in the UFC as well. W Gretz is going to be by uh I just found out that Justin Herbert is uh got a new boo. Madison Beer is the is the name Declan. So, my question to Declan was, well, who’s more famous, Madison Beer or Haley Steinfeld? who is now the wife of Declan’s favorite quarterback, Josh Allen. Instagram tells me that Madison Beer has 20 million more followers than Haley Steinfeld. So, personal bias aside tells me that she’s twice as popular. I don’t. But there’s Instagram famous and there’s like real world famous. But people that are on Instagram are real people, so they follow her twice as many. Listen, I would make the argument Taylor Swift is the most famous woman on the planet. Would you agree, man? Yeah. Hard to disagree. 14th most followed Instagram account. Well, how many followers does she have? 281 million. Yeah, that’s way more than Steinfeld and Beer combined. Slightly less than the Nike account. Okay. Well, you know what I mean? 7 million more than VR Kohi. So, yeah. So, I’m saying Instagram isn’t always the best barometer, but it’s a pretty good tool. Listen, it’s not a bad tool, but there is something to be said, and I mean this with no disrespect. There is something to be said for 12y olds with a phone verse adults. Wow. And I think in adults, Haley Stein, look at these dunks. My goodness. I think with adults, Haley Steinfeld is more famous. I don’t know who either of them are. I Duncan I on my right hand I don’t know who these people are. I believe you. Haley Steinfeld. I’m not joking. I thought was related to Jerry Seinfeld. Different. Not even the same name. There’s a there’s a letter in there, but that I did not know who she was. She was Did you ever see the True Grit remake? No. The Cowboy movie? Yeah. The C Yeah. Yeah. With with Matt Damon and Jeff Bridges. She was in that as the girl. Okay. It was She was pretty good in that. She was nominated for an Oscar for that actually. Okay. And what has she been in since? Well, so she was in some Pitch Perfect movies. Okay. Heard of those. Um she is a singer. Like she’s actually I think a good singer. Like a She’s a talent. She’s a triple threat almost. She was in Sinners. She was in She Yeah, she’s got Academy Award BAFTA nomination. She was in The Edge of 17, Pitch Perfect Film Series. Like I mentioned, she’s doing pretty well. And let’s check out her discoraphy here. Just really quickly, while we’re here, you’re defending your girl. I get it. She has had many number one albums has she had? Okay, zero. But still pretty famous. She’s famous. There’s no doubt about it. When you have 20 million Instagram followers, you are famous. But when you have 40 million, you might be more famous. No, but man, there’s the difference between 11year-olds who grow up on TikTok and real people. Don’t 11year-olds knowing people. They know they know people. They know things. Now, Noriki Noride says Herbert wins. Look at them side by side. No competition. I think now we’re Now we’re Now we’re judging. We’re not judging. Yeah, we can’t do it based on looks. That’s That’s not right. Show some respect. Haley Steinfeld sounds like a great person. Very talented. And Madison Beer’s like fake hot. You know what I mean? Like she’s obviously very hot, but there’s a part of you that’s like the like when I look at someone like Madison Beer, I’m like you’re you put so much into this because you know you have to be hot for Instagram and Tik Tok. Whereas Haley Steinfeld is just more or less herself. And obviously I’ve spent ton of time with these girls. So, I know. Uh, but that’s like that’s like if you look at them, that’s the takeaway you would get. I think Josh, we got to ring them up on the Instagram. Photos of both of them. Got photos of them up there. Nicki is saying it’s a they’re quarterbacks. Looks are all that matter. Well, they’re they’re humans. Those matter, too. Husk says, “Real world famous, low tide, internet famous, Hawkua, and Husks.” I think you’re just signing your name Husks and not putting yourself in the internet famous. But Hawkua girl, man, she did good. She’s a currency that she scanned people out of. She had a top podcast. It’s like it’s cred credibility versus just being famous for no dumb reason. Listen, if you’re if you hit it big on the internet and you don’t have a cry crypto dump and pump scam, what are you even doing? Like figure it out. That’s like the easiest way to get rich. You just tweet about it once, then you dump the coin. I saw people like, “Oh, those poor people. Why are you buying Hawk to a girl’s coin? Like if you do that, did you um Yeah, you know, like that’s kind of on you. Did you ever buy any NFTts? No, I didn’t even I don’t understand NFTs, Declan. I brought some Bitcoin back in the day, doubled my money and sold it. I wish I would have hung on to it. I almost bought an NFT um not because I thought it was a good investment or anything, but just because I wanted this cool picture of the ape. You know what I mean? Yeah. Like I wasn’t I wasn’t trying to be crypto, bro. I just wanted to own this cool picture that I could have saved on my phone for free. Just gonna follow it up that Nikki Northside who’s very heated about this says, “Hey, Madison Beer is also a singer. She’s not just IG famous.” Well, she might be dating Justin Herbert, so I might have to go download her entire album or all of them. I don’t know. I don’t know how many she has. Uh W Gretz joining us now from Oilers Nation. W I got I got here just in the nick of time. We just made it. Thank goodness. What are your thoughts on Haley Steinfeld and Madison Beer? Do you have any? I thought it was Haley Seinfeld. That’s what I said. I thought they were related. Then I Googled it once and a lot of other people had Googled, “Is Haley Steinfeld related to Jerry Seinfeld?” When you click on that, it was like, “You’re an idiot.” That’s like asking, “Is Jimmy Smith related to Billy Smith?” There’s a different different Well, different name. Oh, I see. You know, but I thought the same thing. I thought she was Jerry’s daughter. Yeah. Anyway, she’s not. She’s very talented. Married to Josh Allen, quarterback of the Buffalo Bills. They seem happy. Absolutely. They say positive things. Yeah, it’s all you can ask for from a celebrity marriage. That’s it. That’s all you want. People just being happy. Uh I’m backward. Oh, and then Tigers. What about Libby? Dune or Dunn? Done. Livy Dunn and Paul Ske who’s taking them out to the Chase Knight. He’s very famous gymnast with LSU, I believe. Just graduated. That’s another power couple right there. They exist in sport. Professional athletes have that opportunity. Uh WA, you are out with Tyler Yurmchuk. He’s doing a pretty extraordinary thing with trying to Our friend Tyler is out at Cattail Crossing Golf Course right now. Shout out to Cattail for allowing this buffoonery to exist on their golf course. And he thinks he can make a hole in one on a par three. I think it’s about 152 yards. Mhm. 24 hours and he’s live streaming the entire thing and he thinks it’s a lock. Fatigue is going to weigh in. He’s We’re last we checked 1,000 swings. Is he if he hits it, is it over? What do you mean? Like if he gets a hole in one, we just stop it. Well, yeah. So, he doesn’t have to play golf. It’s not 24 hours for sure. Yeah. We were joking like what if like third swing he hit it? So, half an hour in he lipped out really at like 7:00 in the morning. Okay. And nobody was really watching yet. And we have a tent. We have it all on film so we know. But he lipped out. And then when we were there, it’s hard, man. Like 152 yards is not by any means a long par three, but when you’re sitting and he was doing mega sets of 10 balls and all this crazy stuff. Liipping out is about as close as you could get to getting a hole in one. How’s he feeling? Sore. I brought him second skin, which was suggested by the chat, which is like anti blister stuff. And then I bought him like Roback spray. So it’s like immediate muscle pain relief spray. So I like bug sprayed him up and then I sprayed his back. This is being presented by Will Hawk, correct? Great great folks down there. Best beef jerky. I love it. Um and we’re raising money for the Ben Stelter Fund. And that’s the big one I want to talk about. That’s the actual point of this. If people want to donate, yep, you guys got the links all up with uh Oilers Nation or just Yeah, if you go on YouTube or you look on uh Oilers Nation X or Oilers Nation Instagram, it’s all being live streamed on all our platforms. I think we’ve raised about a thousand bucks so far. Well, we’re going to keep it going. Tyler’s going to join us around 4:00. I don’t know if he’s going to throw in a headset and do it as he swings. We’ll get the update on how he’s feeling. The casual sports fan out there, like I feel like every male was probably like, “Yeah, I could do it. It’s it’s tough. I think I don’t think I could do it. I’d love to give it a go the whole 24 hours, but I feel like I’m not Tiger, but I might have a violent swing. I might be feeling the pain after that. It’s It’s pretty impressive. And I’m I’m hoping he does it sooner than later. I don’t like two in the morning swinging swinging. It’s that’ll be tough. I think it becomes an athletic thing, not a golf thing about four hours in. Yeah. Because right now he was by his own admission four out of 10 shots were just flubs at this point due to fatigue. Yeah. So, uh, one of the, uh, guys who works at Cattail came up and was watching and he said statistically it’s like 12,000 to one to get a hole in one for an average golfer. So, at the time Tyler was closing in on a thousand balls hit. He’s like, you’re one 12th of the way there and then left. Well, I guess and if you want to go pay him a visit, bring him a coffee. People probably like to do so. Cattail certainly. Go say hello to Tyler. We’ll talk to him like that uh later on. We’re going to do some oil report stuff as well. I I’ll bring it up to you later on. Steuart Skinner contract the next one. What could it look like? Are there discussions happening? Uh but we’ll take a break here. When we come back, we’re going to talk some hoops with Paul sir of the basketball show. Obviously Paul involved with basketball all different levels in our province. We’ll talk about that. He says 122,000 to one when it comes to hole in ones. I think I played 2500 rounds in my life. That’s 10,000 par 3es. Still not a dang it. Got to keep plugging. IMAC. Just a reason to get back out on the course. I would say as Tyler Yurchuk trying to hit a hole in one. I will say this, if he hits it, what a feeling. That’s like that’s like the the high we’re chasing. If he hits it, that’ll be something. Uh, no name on this text. What club is he hitting? Oh, that’s a good question. He was hitting a five iron if you can believe it. F I can believe it. From 152 yards with a tailwind. That doesn’t mean much to me. What do you mean? Should would you go club down or club? Should be like a seven or an eight iron. Yeah. Well, 152 yards. Well, does that mean to maybe a better golfer than us? No. I think he’s just trying to hit knockdowns to like preserve his arms. the strategy swings. Okay. You’re talking to a guy who when he plays just like uses the same club and just changes his wrists. What? Yeah. I’m not I golf once a year. When When’s the one time? Fantasy football. Oh. Got to We different levels. So, we just use the combined scores and par threes to determine the order. So, you don’t enjoy the game or you haven’t had occasion to play or what? I enjoy it by like whole four, but I Yeah, I don’t know. It’s fun, but I’m like, I don’t want to pay money to go whack a ball. But then I get out there and I’m like, “Oh, this is kind of fun.” But I I I’ve been this way for a while and people don’t invite me golfing. So, do you think as you continue to age this will change? No. Unless Benny likes to golf, then probably won’t. As you get older, there’s fewer and fewer ways you can compete with your friends and enemies and whoop them at stuff. Golf. I don’t whoop them, though. I’m not that good. That’s the problem. I guess I I could get into it again. I used to love it when I was younger. just get dropped off at Dragon’s Head, but not quite as much. But uh yeah, you know, Tyler, to his credit, was a 20 handicap three years ago and is now a seven handicap. Took no lessons, just willed himself with stubborn Tyler your MCU pride. They’re the most diversified electrical contractor in Alberta with four divisions in project service tag and solar for commercial or residential. Contact them today at actionlectrical.net. We’re joined by Paul Sur, host of the Basketball Show. Paul, good afternoon. How are things going? Well, things are good, but I have to let you know I did have a hole in one. Really? A long time ago. I was 30 years old. Uh part par three, 132 yards up on a hill and I knocked it in. So, that was definitely the highlight because it’s all it’s been all downhill since then. But I was I was one of those uh one in however many thousand that was able to was able to have that experience in my golf my short and less than illustrious golf career. It’s probably less exciting to an elite athlete. Us civilians, a hole in one is all we have left on the trophy life shelf of life, right? Well, I don’t golf anymore. I just find the time too taxing. And so, uh, I was I was compelled by your, uh, comment, Juan, about, uh, finding ways to beat your friends as you get older. I don’t think that becomes so much of a a goal anymore as just being glad to be able to get out and do things such as tennis and pickle ball, which are kind of the areas that I focus on now. Pickle ball might be the one for me. We got a big uh facility right by the house. So, I might get into that one. I think I got convince the friends to go out with me. But, uh, one day, one day, maybe mean you got to get out there, Paul. Well, uh, that’s fine. I like I I still think pickle ball is the dark side to tennis, but it is the it is such a great sport. It is so easy to pick up and it is a lot of fun. And so, yeah, you know what, Connor? I’d be up for it anytime. One of these days. One of these days. Okay. Well, let’s talk some hoops, Paul. The Emmonton Stinger season concluded with a loss to the Surge. Uh, it started off a little bit tough, but they obviously found their game, got into the playoffs, unfortunately, one and done. Uh, what did you think of this season for the Edmonton Stingers, and we’ll focus on the court. On the court, uh, I would say a bit anticlimactic. Um, three years in a row, uh, to be beaten by the Surge in the first round. Three years in a row, Calgary has a new coach. Uh, three years in a row, they’re able to come up with a combination quite honestly that has been slightly better than the Stingers overall. And this year in particular, the Surge, I I’ll talk about them for just a second. They put together an a very strong lineup and added key pieces as the season went on and held on to those pieces. The Evans, the Singers weren’t able to do that for whatever reason. I I I don’t know why, but they were they peaked uh probably threequarters of the way through the season and then started to fade. Won their last two against lesser teams. Let’s let’s be honest, Calgary was just too good. And then Calgary turns around just to show how good they are. goes into Vancouver and beats the powerful Vancouver uh Bandits team 107 105 on the I think on the shoulders of who ultimately was the best player in the league who missed some games which probably took him out of the MVP running in Jir Nelson Jr. Uh but uh going back to the Stingers, yeah, you know, good season, another solid season, but I have to say uh I’m I’m curious to what the offseason will bring for the Stingers of do they want to be solid or do they want to be contenders? And I think that’ll be make this an interesting off season for them. Jir Nelson Jr., I remember Jir Nelson, the senior. I didn’t even know his son was playing. That’s uh that’s crazy. Feeling a little bit old right now with that one there. So, what’s next for the Stingers here, Paul? This offseason. What What do they do to get over that hump being the Calgary Surge? Well, I think, you know, it, you know, and it’s not just the Surge. Vancouver’s powerful. I I would expect uh I I would expect Calgary, if I had to pick a champion today, I’ll pick Calgary. My money would go with them. They’re really good top to bottom, good role players. uh the the Jir Nelson’s Shaun East uh II for the Stingers I I believe finished second in MVP voting uh to Mitch Creek from Vancouver who just who who was deserving of the MVP but if I had to pick between who would the better player between Shaun East and Jir Nelson and I know this is kind of dicey because I love Shawn East. I think he’s the best player the Stingers have had since Xavier Moon. But I think Jamir Nelson is the best player the CEBL has had since Xavier Moon. He he’s undersized but o undersized physically oversized basketball IQ and genetics wise like he he’s special. So um Stingers in the off season. I hope they can get Jir back. I hope they can get uh Scotty Lindsay back. I hope they can get uh several of their core players back. But they have to get deeper. They have to get better at at key possession positions and be able to get the players in and keep them here through the season. They made some LA late season decisions that uh I I you know didn’t help them certainly did affect their depth. They have to improve their depth. Uh and they also have to get a bit bigger. Uh, I know that this year they were hoping to have Ben Criky, Edmonton’s great player, who decided just to take the summer off because he really hadn’t had any time off for a long time. But, but, but they’ve got they’ve got to find some ways to, I think, get a little more juice in a couple of the positions and get a little more depth. Paul S joining us here on the Jason Greger Show, taking a look all around the basketball world. Let’s let’s look at the NBA and the Toronto Raptors. Today was announced Bobby Webster’s contract has been extended. obviously he is the GM kind of an executive role after the team parted ways with Messiah. He’s going to be making all the calls. So when you look at this Raptors team and competing in the Eastern Conference, do they have enough? And if not, what do you think they can look to do here in the next couple years to get back to where they want to be? Well, I think I think they have I I think they have definitely made some strides to to be competitive in the Eastern Conference. I think a lot of the the the pundits are picking them in the 7 to 10 range right now in the east. Now looking at the East, that’s not saying nearly as much as if you were being picked seven to 10 in the West. The East is just is not as strong. The Raptors have a lot of of great pieces. Scotty Barnes is, you know, I I think we’re going to see this year is Scotty Barnes, Scotty Pippen, like a player that is really great as a second as as the second option who can do a variety of things or is he capable of putting the team on his back night after night? Uh, can quickly bear it? Well, basically, can the entire Raptors lineup stay relatively healthy through the years? because we really have not seen how this, you know, this lineup as it’s been configured over the last year and a half. They haven’t played together that much. So, it’ll be interesting to see this year if they’re able to stay healthy and really start to gel as a unit. I think we’re going to see a lot more uh a lot more from this team this year if they are healthy. Can Grady Dick be the shooter that they need him to be? Uh, and one of the weaknesses I think that has been identified, I think the Raptors are trying to uh, address is their ability to shoot three. And they’ve got some good players in that in in that area as well. Yaka Purle, traditional old school big guy, but very, very good at what he does. They’ve got some size to back him up now. So, I look for the Raptors to make some big steps forward. Are they still a player away from being elite in the East? I think so. Are they going to be able It’ll be interesting to see if they try to make a trade to address that or if they’re going to continue down the path that Ajuri was on under the new leadership of Bobby Webster and try to develop that talent. Now, Paul, a couple uh players in new places, one old, one a little younger. Cooper flag goes to the Dallas Mavericks and into the state of Texas, you got Kevin Durant going to Houston. Let’s just say with this upcoming year, not not any further past that, which is the more intriguing storyline for you? Well, I think it’s Cooper flag because you have to look at Dallas and that bizarre trade of Luca Donuch that, you know, had everybody, I think, ba, you know, basically scratching their heads and going, “What in the heck just happened when they sent Donic to the Lakers for Anthony Davis, who’s, you know, going to be a Hall of Fame player?” But I I mean, he’s 33 34 injury riddled career and not a lot else. But now to have uh the the draft god smile on Dallas the way it did and give them the most intriguing draft pick maybe maybe since LeBron James uh in Cooper Flag coming on their team. I I think that just creates a real compelling story line storyline adding in will Kyrie Irving be able to recover from his knee injury and come back at what point during the season and what will the Dallas Mavericks look like when they have Flag playing alongside Davis and Kyrie Irving? The Durant I mean who’s twice the age of Cooper Flag uh story in Houston also compelling. But let’s let’s look at Durant and and let’s look at what he’s actually been able to do. He won he won a couple of championships in Golden State, but that’s with Golden State. Uh where he’s gone since then just has not been nearly as impactful. I I don’t know uh how it’s going to work in Houston. It’s certainly compelling uh enough that Ken Durant’s elite scoring ability, which he still can do at age 37, is that going to be enough to push this rocket lineup, which is improving with a lot of young talent, uh built around Durant? Will he be able to fit into their chemistry? Will uh they be able to play the hard-nosed style of defense they play? because Durant used to be a great defender more as a rim protector than a non ball defender, but now they’ve got some bigs behind him that are going to also be rim protectors in Houston. But it makes the West a little more compelling because I think everybody right now is tending towards the idea that who who’s going to really challenge the Thunder? So maybe the Rocket, maybe the Mavericks, but uh there’s one other team that I think is a legitimate uh cause for concern in OKC, and that’s the Denver Nuggets. Yeah, I mean, the West is going to be an absolute dog fight with some of those teams you mentioned. Uh the Nuggets, what do you think the biggest key for them? Is it just staying healthy? Healthy, of course. Healthy for one guy, absolutely. Uh but I think a couple of the moves, I think addition by subtraction, getting rid of Michael Porter Jr. uh is is good for them. He just did not did not fit. Even though he’s an elite shooter, he wasn’t an elite shooter at the right times for the Nuggets. But they added Bruce Brown back. They picked up a couple of other players, but the big key is former Raptor Yonas Valenunis being able to back up Nicole Joic. He’s not Nicole Joic, but Yonas Valenunis is a very, very good uh post player. So when he comes into the game, it won’t be uh such a panic to get Jokic back in as it’s been the last few years. So I I just think Denver whenever you have Jokic on the court as great as SGAA is, as deep young and talented as and dominant as Oklahoma City was, we have to remember OKC was taken to a tough seven games with a much weaker Denver team. So a stronger Denver team with the great Jokic who is wants nothing more than to get back to the NBA title. uh uh NBA championship round again this year. They’re going to be a lot that that the the the West is going to be a rock fight. It is going to be hard-nosed basketball all year long and it’s going to be a lot of fun to watch. And Paul, just before we let you go here, pretty good performance from Alberta at the summer games this year. Historic uh historic first time ever that the Alberta under 17 boys and under 17 girls won gold. And what’s great is they both beat Ontario teams. Uh the women were defending the 2022 gold medal that they won. Our women are really, really good. But to see the boys come on, there’s several potential division one kids on this poise team. A lot of them are from Calgary, but we have some great talent here in Edmonton as well. But, uh, boy, I I think Alberta has arrived and it is exciting to see the talent and the hard work in the basketball community paying off and, uh, these kids going out and being able to make the statement of, uh, winning both gold medals, uh, in the Canada Summer Games. Really impressive. Well, Paul, thanks so much for doing this today and uh, we’ll talk to you soon, I’m sure. Always a pleasure, Connor. You guys have a great day. You as well. That is Paul sir, host of the basketball show here on Sports 144. lifer in the basketball game. And Dean, just quickly here, your Earth opinion, who hypothetically has a better chance of winning an NBA championship, the Mavs or the Lakers? It’s a great question. Uh, Lakers by a substantial margin right now, I would say. Substantial. Yeah. I Kyrie Irving’s not there. Anthony Davis can’t stay healthy and Cooper Flag’s a rookie. You know what I’m saying? So, the Lakers, Listen, I’ve said this. I don’t think LeBron’s going to win another title, period. I certainly don’t think it’s going to be in LA. I think Luca does get one there at some point. Um probably a little way little ways down the road, but right now as it stands, yeah, I’m taking LA. And then follow up. Most intriguing team in Texas. San Antonio. All right. San Antonio, man, because WBY is the best basketball player we’ve ever seen by a million miles. We’re just not allowed to say it yet because he’s played a year and a half. and you pair him now with, you know, with De’aran Fox and um, you know, Steph Castle and those guys they have down there, it’s just the world’s our oyster. It’s funny because there was a similar conversation with Conor McDavid in the hockey world where it was like, when can we say it? When can we say he is the most electric player we’ve ever seen? People didn’t want to say it. I remember it was like you’d be like when the Oilers and Penguins played and I think McDavid’s the best player in the NHL and people be like whoa whoa whoa whoa it’s Sid don’t you dare say that but you say that about WBY and give it a couple years I think more people will be on that bandwagon deck well can I drop a fun little stat for you here always all right I think I have it memorized but I just want to pull it up just in case I do not I mean it’s going to be something ridiculous because he can it’s about blocks can he lead the league in blocks in half a season. All right. So, through 100 career games, he has more points than LeBron, KD, and Carmelo, more rebounds than Joel Embiid, Anthony Davis, Patrick Ewing, more blocks than Hakee, David Robinson, and Shaq, and more threes than Steph Curry, Clay, and Trey Young. So, I don’t know what we’re doing here when we’re dancing around the fact that this is clearly clearly the best basketball player ever. Stay healthy. That’s all we got. Stay healthy. And uh what’s going to be fun to see what he can do. Um the topic earlier today was with Carious was like bad players that make you want to watch their team cuz Paul SK with the Pirates taking on the Jays like you watch for him. and he asked to look for com comparable and I was like maybe because even if the team’s bad he’s going to put up his points and his blocks and he’s going to be worth the watch. Just got to stay healthy. Uh we’ll take a break here. When we come back we’ll get Cam Tate’s two-minute warning and more. Are we going to put Sam through the ringer? Absolutely. Sam will learn to do it all. Today, when we were at Tyler’s hole-in-one challenge, we ordered ood Noodle and they delivered it to the house across the street from the golf course. Not Noodle’s fault, not the app’s fault. Who knows? We dropped a pin and we’ll just say that that house looked like the kind of house you don’t want to pull up at and start making demands. Yeah. Whoever owns this house looked like they’re in charge. And so, we figured that the food didn’t arrive to the golf course, but it had to be arriving somewhere. So, we sent our Oilers Nation intern, Peyton, across the street thinking that he’s fully expendable and if the homeowner were to shoot him or worse, that’s fine. He’s the intern. And he came back with the food and it’s because he’s 6’8. Connor. Oh, you’re not going to mess around with the Oilers Nation intern when he’s as tall as Wimi. I’m going to tell you, you sent me a video of one of his takes on Lamar Jackson. Mhm. And it didn’t matter what the video was. I listened and I was just filled with rage. You were insensed, right? I was if he was doing clickbait, he got me. But the sports broadcaster in you recognizes the talent. Yeah, he sounded very good. Yeah, he’s really talented. But uh I know you said he’s 6’8. Yeah, I’m not I’m not saying anything. And I said to your MR when he started, “Look, your MR, look at the man who’s going to replace you. He’s 6’8 and exceeds you in all categories.” And then Tyler was inspired to try to get a hole in one. We’re going to talk to Tyler in about 10 minutes here uh on the Jason Greger. So show it. Sorry, sorry. Okay, Little League World Series. Let’s give that a noodle doodle. You know, the big event down in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. It’s on right now. In 1972, I was convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt I was going. I was the mascot of the South Edmonton Senior A All-Star Baseball Club. A gentleman, Mr. Papkkey, who had a resume as a junior hockey coach, was our baseball coach. We had two a day practices at Jubilee Park. 160th Street, 92 Avenue, and before we had one drill, one batting practice, one double play, drilled, Mr. Papkkey sat us down first base bench and told us we were good. Really good. So good in fact, we would represent Edmonton, go to Calgary, win there, then off to Thunder Bay, win there, and represent Canada in Williamsport as the Little League World Series. Hadn’t even thrown a ball, but damn it, we were going to the Little League World Series, and that meant we were going to be on aircrafts. Mr. Papkkey said all of us had to wear a tie when we traveled. You too, Cam, Mr. Papkkey said, pointing at me. Now living with the cerebral palsy, my hands, not that of an oral surgeon, if you know what I mean. When I went home after practice and asked my dad to teach me how to tie a tie. Dad said some words, words ain’t saying on the radio, dad showed me only once, and suggested this was the craziest thing he had ever heard of. For 14 days, one hour a day, I tried tying ties and I had more knots than the Canadian Navy. Then ping the 14th day, I had my double Windsor figured out and I still tie one today. As for the baseball team, we never made it out of Edmonton. I share the story to give a tip of the cap to little league baseball coaches, volunteers who teach so many life’s lessons. Two-minute warning. Halley Krueger, Tate. Monday, Wednesday, sports 14:40. There you go. Cam Tates. Two-minute warning. I know it was more about the sport, but uh Tater, I’m with you. I cannot tie a tie. Uh I work in radio. I never have to wear a tie. So, when I get a tie, I get it tied once and I just don’t untie it. All my ties are on a hanger and all I have to do is tighten it, loosen it. Wana, you’re shaking your head. Do you know how to tie a tie? I do indeed. I’m a gentleman. What if I got drafted into the NBA and I couldn’t put a suit together? No, no, I can tie a tie. Don’t worry about that. Um, I did it once over with a YouTube video. I had to do a radio school presentation. Oh, nice. And I used a YouTube video and it came together just fine. It’s tough. I think there’s some things in life worth learning how to do and I think tying a tie is one of those things. Yeah. like when you actually figure it out. Putting it in contact lenses was also very complicated for me. But tying a tie, you get it done. It takes a few kicks to the cat. When you finally get it straight, you then understand why people always seem to be adjusting their ties, those that have ties. But there’s a real sense of satisfaction when you can get it done because it’s hard. I think Yeah. And I one day I must have to or we’ll have to show my son. So I have to learn. Do you think wearing suits will ever come back in style? I hope so. I don’t know like a couple years ago when the NFL coaches were like want to wear suits, Niners coach and was it the Jags coach wore them? Thought it was a cool look. But Mitchell says, “You better learn when I win the lotto tomorrow, I’m buying the radio station.” Sick. Could you imagine? Mitchell just comes in here. We got a dress code now. Mitchell, that little Nike zip-up hoodie. Not good enough. He’s like, “That’s Mr. Mitchell to you. I just won all this money and I made a gold. Can you can you please keep me on the staff in this scenario by the way? Don’t look at us. Look at Mitchell. He’s Oh, I am I’m talking to Mitchell. I’m throwing this one out there. Mitch, keep me around, please. Or Mitchell, if that’s what you’d prefer. Mr. Mitchell, do you? JP says, “Why does Wani not have his video on for stream?” Why would you want to see me? A man can only have so many kids. I wonder that about me, too. What if we put a nice filter on me? Sure. Who do you want to look like? Uh, Madison Beer. Oh, wow. I think that would do numbers. Yeah. 40 million. In fact, Buzzy says his mom taught him for his first communion as a child. Really? I just as a child used clipon ties. The one time a year I’d wear them. What would you wear a tie to as a child? Weddings. My grandparents had a Christmas party and you had to wear a little kid suit. I remember that. Yeah. It’s good for that could be. Yeah, it’s good for you to wear a suit. Nice to dress up. Yeah. Look up a elderric tie knot. I did one for my wedding. Super complex, but worth it. See, for my wedding, we had rental stuff. I don’t even know what the tie was. That day flew by. Did it really? That is not the memory I have. It flew past. Yeah, it goes quick. Yeah, great day. Great day. Let’s talk to Ty about that. Maybe on Wednesday. Today we’re focused on his golf. Yeah, we’re focused on his athletic career. We’re not going to be uh we’re not going to be keeping him too long. I’ll tell you that. Mitchell says, “Connor and Declan are the only ones I’m keeping. 7 am to 6 pm.” Wow. I’m glad I got fired. Yes, sir. Boss, we’ll be reporting for duty. People will absolutely hate it. Let’s take a break. When we come back, we are going to go to Cattail. Uh see how Tai is doing. We’re going to talk some NFL on the 4:20 hour. Maybe a little UFC as well with Declan. Five questions. Then we’ve got Spec and then also very special guest, Justin Rankin of the Emmonton Alex, a guy who’s absolutely crushing it in the CFL. Got to get him on. Got to have him on the show. talk about how things are going for him. And uh Fuzzy says, “We’re Italian. No clipons allowed.” So there you go. That’s the reason you got to do that tie up. Connor Hely, Bon Gretz with you. Declan Krueger, got Josh Fenwick here as well. The Jason Greger show brought to you by playalberta.ca. CA reminder, use your game sense, but when you make a deposit, Gregor 50 code word, you can get a $50 free play and all money stays in the province. So, if you want to head over to playalberta.ca, it’s too bad we couldn’t bet on Tyler. Will he do it or not? Tiger Remchuk down at Cattail Crossing his ace races. He’s trying to hit a hole in one. He’s hit 1,262 balls in 9 and 1/2 hours. And uh he’s still plugging away here. We’re going to try to track him down. Uh, see if we can get the AirPods in or something as he works his way. He’s got the shirt off now. Working on the tan. The swing. I will say like it doesn’t look like he’s laboring. It looks like he’s kind of just working the same way he was before. The mechanics are sound, but if you’re like a what is how many balls? 1100 1200. That’s outrageous. Yeah. I’ve gone back and I’m watching 30 minutes into the stream this morning when he lipped out. He rolled one up on the green here. Like he he came out of the gate hot. I wonder if at any point there would be a club change. Trying to work on some things here. Well, he’s hitting a five iron 152 yards and he said normally he wouldn’t be hitting a club like that. Put another one in within like from the camera looks like he’s within 10 ft. You’re watching live. I’m watching live now. He’s getting closer. Uh obviously they’re doing this fundraiser raising money for the Ben Stelter Foundation. Uh, Tai has a few more hours to go here. I think 15 more hours. He’ll probably have to throw the shirt back on and then maybe a sweater as well when the sun starts to go down, but hopefully he’ll get that done sooner than later. They got a full staff down there. So, you can head down, say hello if you want, maybe rooe them on. Totally. Go say hello. Make a donation to the Ben Stelter Foundation. Uh, we’ll try to get tie on. If not, that’s okay. It’s okay. On the topic of ties, Brian had said it’s it’s Alberta. Just wear a bolo tie. So, I’ve never rocked the bolo tie. One of my idols, Philip Rivers, certainly did. That was his way of getting around wearing a real tie. They had a policy where you had to suit up on the plane, similar to Tater with his baseball team. My football team, we did a trip down to California once and they had said that. Got to got to dress up. Respect for the game. Show respect for the team. I like it. The Chargers that year also had a very big rallying point. It was sweats on the plane. So you win the game, get sweats on the plane. People like that. Do you think the NBA made a mistake getting rid of suits before games? Well, they had they were cons they were concerned about like the image before a game cuz guys were coming in and they didn’t like the pre game. So then they made the you know for policy. Right. Right. But like now it’s like a fashion show every day with some weird fits. Do you think it’s better everybody wear a suit or what are you I like I like letting them kind of just show up in whatever you want. Really? Yeah. You think hockey players should be allowed to not wear suits before games? 100%. Really? But hockey players are kind of boring so they probably still would. I don’t I I be Be free, you know? I hated the Yankees facial hair policy like no beards or whatever like like on Simpsons. Yeah. Mattingly shave those sideburns. I like to just the little Let guys be how they want to be. So if he don’t want to wear a suit, you want to roll in in, you know, some joggers and a hoodie. I’m all on board for it. What do you think about when Ike Howard wore his suit to the draft with the turtleneck and the pendant and the American flag belt buckle? I like it. I think he looked great. I like the uh just do what you want to do. But I mean now you’re like kids are wearing suits to games. It’s trickle down. There is a funny fashion proposition of like what would people wear if they’re making $78 million a year and you let them wear whatever they want to the games. The answer is a lot of fur. What would you wear? Like seriously. Suit, show respect to the team. Totally. Totally. I don’t think in a team sport like that, I’m a big believer of being conservative. I don’t think you want to be like Dennis Rodman or somebody of that ilk. Yeah. Well, and uh MTR texted in didn’t in the new CBA the dress code or like get rid of the dress code. Did they? I thought they did. Yeah, they uh Prior had to wear jackets, ties, dress pants, but I think that changed. Be a little more casual. And uh I think we might have Ty on the phone right now. I’m just looking here on the stream. They say, “Weather update for Edmonton. Severe thunderstorm watch with risk of a tornado. Stay safe.” Oh, I wonder if he’s got to battle through it when he I wonder if the tornado just carried him away like Mary Poppins or what if it dropped the ball right in the hole perhaps? Well, we’ll bring him in right now. Tyler, your M check of Oilers Nation and Daily Face Off joining us on the line. Ty, how’s it going? Uh, had better days, had worse days, you know. Okay. You are what, nine hours into this? Nine and a half. Yeah, nine and a half hours into this. So, I think you were about 1,300 swings. How’s the body feeling? So, uh, there’s a couple areas of pain. One of them is my shoulders. One of them is my lower back. But what’s actually killing my ability to hit the ball right now? It’s my hands. I’ve been wearing two gloves. I’ve been wearing band-aids, but I can’t get my hands just hurt so much. Get that second skin on you. I am. I’ve multiple of them stuffed into my golf clubs right now. Dang. So, oh, I got turn the volume off here. So, watching here, like you’re coming close. Uh, how’s your mindset mentally? Are you are you feeling good about this? Like, is doubt creeping in? How’s it all going? Yeah, like hours four and five when I was getting close, it was very motivating because it’s like, okay, I’m still feeling good and I can do this. getting close to hour 10, everyone that’s close is just even more upsetting and it’s even more frustrating because it’s like I know now how much more I have to tax my body to get one close to the hole and I’m just not getting there at all. Are you debating putting a shirt back on or do you feel more free tarp off? Well, the deal was if the chat raised $1,000 for Sports Central, I would go without a shirt for a while. No one really told me when I am allowed to put a shirt back on. So, I’m just gonna wait until someone in the chat shows me some mercy and maybe like donates a couple hundred bucks and is like, “Put your shirt back on.” That’s what I’m thinking. Raise a little bit more money to put the shirt back on. Now, is there a weather concern right now? I don’t think so. It is hot. Like, the weather concern is that my skin is burning, but I just applied some sunscreen. I’m trying to stay as hydrated as I can with some, you know, water waters and Gatorades and things of that ilk. So, yeah, I think I think I’m doing okay. I’ve eaten some fruit. Like I’m trying to take care of my body as best as I can for swinging a golf club 1300 times. You still got that Western family diet cola adjacent drink going. I’ve finished that. I’ve had a couple beers. I’ve had two Gatorades, but uh the diet cola actually gave you some caffeine. That was good. Good. Just quickly, Tyler, before we let you go here, how did this all come to be? And and what is the sole purpose of it all? So, it all started with a bet between myself and Jay on the Real Life podcast where uh said that I couldn’t do it if I was given 24 hours at a hold one and then we talked to Cattail Crossing. Everything went from there. We added the charity angle onto it so people could uh could kind of play along and yeah, the event was just kind of born out of that. But um yeah, it’s been good. We’ve raised a lot of money so far and you know what? I’m going to hit three right now. I know it’s radio and your people can’t see me, but you can go back and watch on Oilers Nation YouTube. Maybe you guys are my good luck charm. Maybe I gotta just be on the radio. I just shanked the first one. Second one here. We are watching you rocks. Are you live on the stream right now? Third one, they also weren’t good. I guess you guys aren’t my good luck charm. But you know, the swing looks good. Like watching you from this morning and now, it looks like your form’s holding and that’s a good sign. Yeah, that it it comes and goes, but it’s honestly like I I’m losing my power, which is the thing that’s killing me. I think you should probably have some Will Hawk beef jerky. They are the title presenter, so that is a that is a great call. Yeah, best. They Hey, they sponsor Fantasy Frenzy. They say Alberta’s best. I say Canada’s best. Others say the best in the world. So maybe a little beef jerky. And uh one last question for you. Do you have a game plan for sleep? Like if this does go into the wee hours of the morning, I’m hoping it doesn’t. Will you shut it down for an hour or two? Yeah, I think I kind of would have to at some point and maybe even to give like some of our producers and stuff a bit of a break. I might just like call a twohour nap audible or something. I like it. Well, Ty, uh I believe that you’re going to get it done before that. It’s not going to be a factor. Uh continued, uh raising money and hopefully everything goes well here. Thanks for doing this. Hey, sounds good. Good luck, buddy. Very good. Thanks, Tyler. Your Ramchuk Oilers Nation Daily Face Off. uh guy who says he avoids the grind. There’s a lot to like about Tyler doing this. Number one, he was overconfident to begin with. I love somebody who goes into a situation totally underestimating how difficult it is. Then he got 36 minutes into the stream, he lipped out. Yeah. So that’s like being the lead at the 25 meter mark of a 100 meter race. He’s like, “Oh, I was feeling it after that. This I thought this was going to be I could take the rest of the day off.” And now that the cold grim reality is setting in of what he has to do, I love how miserable he’s getting. I mean, had he hit that like bragging rights forever. Like I that 24-hour challenge guy did in 30 minutes. See, he’s he’s setting up here what he calls the mega rack. I’m watching on the feed and he’s got like 10 balls teed up at once. I think that’s a bad way to do it. Well, I mean, he he takes a swing. He watches this one’s rolling onto the green. comes up short. What would you would just do one at a time? I just like two or three maybe, but like 10 across the mega rack. Yeah. But I mean, he I was out there for quite some time. He hit enough good shots like probably at about 2:00 today, he hit a mega rack of 10 balls and I’m going to say four were inside 20 ft. Really? That’s amazing golf. A hole in one. Like this is a very difficult proposition. It’s crazy. Like I remember talking to Strutddy because he could dunk a basketball and he was like, “What would you rather be able to do? Dunk a basketball or hole in one?” Like, “No, I think a hole in one in golf is got to be toughest thing to do.” Tyler is reading the chat off the camera right now. Shirtless. Yeah. And I don’t know if every angle is flattering. Well, you know, he’s pretty lean. Oh, yeah. It is the Jason Greger show. Uh Hollywood Jason says, “How close has he gotten to a hole in one?” He’s put like a few within Well, he lipped out and like a bunch within 5 10 ft. Oh, and when I was there too, he put one about a foot away. Like he’s done some very close shots. Justin says absolutely zero chance of completing that. Kevlar says you might want to mention the tornado warning. Well, that’s what I thought they were taking a break for. Declan had told us about that. But if he doesn’t believe there’s a tornado warning, then it doesn’t count. Well, and you know what? Maybe the wind knocks it into the hole. Maybe that’s what he needs to get a hole in one is divine intervention. 24 hours. He said he was going to do it. Telling those are rookie numbers. That’s my score in a round from Jordan. 1300. Like the light uh like the Catty Shack Priest playing in the rain in the lightning scene. Well, we’re rooting for you, Ty. He’s stretching now, but he’s not stretching properly. He’s just trying to reduce the pain of it all. 1,200 balls. Like that in of itself is quite the feat regardless of just hitting 1,200 balls. Oh yeah. How many buckets at a driving range is 1,200 balls? 125 probably. Like good question. Big bucket or small bucket? Well, that’s a good question. Yeah. Well, we’ll we’ll keep watching him when he if he does it, when he does it, we’ll let you know. I’m curious if listeners texting in or in the chat on YouTube if you think you could get a hole in one. Like, do you think this is really that crazy to do or not really? I’d be interested. Let us know. I I every time I’m at a par three as I walk up like the thought and this is not that often like three times a year. What if what if I do it? It’d be funny because I’m not a golfer but what if golden tea lots of holein- ones? I’m actually pretty good at golden tea. The humble break here. No real golf not so much. But yeah, I mean I had one buddy. I don’t know if he’s listening. He might be Jamie Hole in one. We were there at uh oh Terra Pines for a buddy’s birthday. He shot it like 20 ft over the green. It’s a tree. Bounces back onto the green. Hole in one. I was playing golf with my co-founder of Oilers Nation, Jay Down, and he got a hole in one. And it was probably like So he hoes that over Tyler probably. He’s got two. Two. Yeah. I got one in the father-son tournament with his dad. Only time his dad smiled in recorded history. But he got that one when I was with him. And like the celebrations were jubilant. People all over the course were like, “We heard screaming. Who got a hole in one?” Like it’s pretty exciting. A hole in one. You could play your whole life and never get one. I mean, and then you’re supposed to go in and buy a round of drinks for everyone. We were underage. Oh, round. Well, you can still put money to something. I think if you get a hole in one, that supersedes the liquor act and you should be allowed to drink at any age. You get a beer. Talk to the minister. He’ll agree. If you want it, you should get one. It is funny cuz sometimes Tyler gets a good one and I can tell it’s feeling good off off the club. He’s kind of bouncing and then you just see it on the split screen. Roll in. There’s none too close to the pin right now. Given how hard he’s working, I think every fan of Human Achievement should want Tyler Ramch to get this hole in one and make a donation. Maybe do it for Ben. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. Um Yeah. And you’re right. Like I’ve I’ve been on the course when there’s a hole in one and you just hear people freaking out and everyone’s looking over. Uh we’ll take a break here. When we come back, we’ll talk some NFL football. might get into some UFC as well. Then we got five questions. We’ll be joined by Mark Spectre. We’ve also got Edmonton Elks running back Justin Rankin coming off one heck of a game leading the Elks to victory over the Argos on Friday night. All that and more. Lease a 2025 XC90 plug-in hybrid from 1.49% and save 7500. The There’s only one week left to get this deal. Great vehicles, better service at volcarmon.com. And uh yeah, we talked about it a little bit there with Kevin Woodley because we kind of talked about things we want to talk to beforehand and one of the topics was could there be a Steuart Skinner contract extension and what might it look like? And he he’s such a polarizing figure in this city. I mean I I think everyone would be okay with an upgrade at goalending. Maybe not if it is Seward Center. Maybe it’s for a Calvin Pickard. But the two goalies goalies $3.6 million cap it. Geez, you’re not going to get a better value than that. like that’s going to be that’s going to be something that is tough to to beat and then especially when you factor in if you do go higher obviously you’re going to lose some money to spend elsewhere caps going up so players will get raises and that might greatly benefit the Oilers um but he’s taken you he’s been a part of depends on your preference some people will say he was carried along but he was so good in the playoffs this year you know against the Dallas Stars he’s got you and been a part of the team that’s gone to two straight Stanley Cup finals but they haven’t won. And for some people they’d say, you know, if you have better goalending, you win a Stanley Cup. So W like where do you think this negotiation begins for the Empton? Like if you’re Stuart Skinner, 27 years old, like this is going to be an opportunity to cash in, get that deal, you know, hopefully, you know, secure the bag. Where how how long are you signing for? What’s the number going to be? That that’s the question here. When I think of St. Skinner, I think about what the plan was originally when he showed up to be backup to Jack Campbell, right? Yeah. Who signed a long-term deal and they I think at the time thought Skinner would be the goalie of the future and Campbell was the goalie of the present, right? And then Jack didn’t stick around and found his way out of town and then all of a sudden it was Skinner’s team and like I don’t know that you can accelerate a player’s development that fast just because the plan didn’t turn out. I think that he’s been asked to fill a very big hole in the lineup at a very young age. Yeah, I think he’s done a good job. So, I think going forward, I think especially like you hit the nail on the head at a good value contract. I think it’s probably the way. And like I would love to go into the negotiation between these two sides because if you are Stuart Skinner’s agent, you’ll say, “Okay, well, he’s been an all-star and the all-star process is a little bit flawed.” I’ll be the first to admit that. But he’s he’s been a part of a team that’s gone to two straight Stanley Cup finals. He was a game seven and then a game six. Uh he had very good runs in the playoffs. There’s also been some times where it’s like needing to make that save, right? And we’ve talked about that before like it’s it’s been both sides. So for him, consistency is a big thing. And then you got a new goalending coach. So maybe maybe there’s some growth in his game from that. And he’s still a young goalie. And was it Speck last week talked about kind of the slot machine reference? Like you don’t want to punch in and give this guy all this time and then move on and then all of a sudden someone unlocks him and he takes that next step. The Deon Dubnick type thing. Dubnick was an automatic, right? Like he went to Shawn Burke, I believe, was the goalending coach where he kind of helped him groom his game a little bit, but then became a very good goalie. To move on from him this quickly, I think would be kind of foolish. And I to me, I think this this is the year like with a new goalending coach, another year of experience for Steuart Skinner. Like, if he has a good year, I don’t think there’s any hesitation for the Eton Oilers to make him well a little more wealthy. Pay him higher up. What would you pay for Stu Skinner in his next contract? Geez, I’m so bad at these projections. Um, like I’m trying to think of a comparable here for him. And I don’t think anyone’s going to, you know, categorize him as elite tier in the NHL. And you also have to factor in that like the Oilers cap space, although with even with the cap space opening up, they they can’t just be handing out massive deals, right? Uh in a couple years, Jack Campbell’s contract does come off the books, which frees up what another 1 point whatever million it might be. I think um he’s not just circuit. You’re not paying him double digits. Would his camp say, “Can I be in the category of UC Soros?” Like Jakeer, like you beat him twice in the playoffs. Like if if I’m an agent, that’s where I’m going. I don’t think any fan base is saying you’re paying him nor making uh Soros is 7.7. Lucas Do 6.5 million. Skinner’s a little bit older than that, but it’s going to be a it’s going to be an increase in the pay raise if he wants to stay in oil country, right? And if if they want to keep him, I’d love to hear the text 183341440. Is there a number that you think it would be for a Steuart Skinner contract extension? And maybe, you know, maybe it’s two categories. What would you pay him? What do you think it’s going to be? Fuzzy says backtoback cup final. Skinner’s not perfect. Needs more time to develop. And that’s it. Like I think the new goalie coach, it’s gonna see how, you know, working with him. What does he add? Um, we know there are some deficiencies. People will bring up his side to side movement can be a little bit slow at times and we’ve seen it. I I think he’s gotten better, but I how good. Brian Fan says Oilers fans will be lucky or Oilers will be lucky to get back to the finals this year if Skinner is still in that he lost them to finals. They’re the best team both times and he lost them to finals to give them another chance. That’s very depressing to whatever fan base is left. Well, there’s going to be tons of fans left. whatever fan base is left. That’s not going going to be a problem. Well, but okay. So, let’s What happened in the playoffs for the best players who are making the most money? McDavid and Dry Settle key games pointless, right? So, you can say air quotes he cost them, but I don’t think he cost them. I don’t think he was their biggest problem in the finals. The only thing you can ask for for more success from the Oilers, including Skinner, is a cup win. That’s it. Like they’ve come within a whisper two years in a row. Yeah. So the fact the only further setting on the dial is cup win. Let’s just stay in the pocket. Yeah. Another year like that gang. D from the border city says no one talks about Jack Campbell when you say 3.6 in goalending. He’s 2.6 next year. I’m just saying on the roster like that’s such a good value. It’s a factor. Jack Campbell. Absolutely. The buyout is a factor. And but for $3.6 million you have two goalies. That’s pretty good value. Really good value. Ryan says Skinner 4.3 mil three years. That I could stomach as the fake GM of the team and the capologist. Do you know where that puts him at 4.3 mil? That would put him in AAV between Kevin Lanin and Peter Morazzic. Declan. Declan says, “Sounds about right.” Off Mike, scoundrel. Uh, that would be good. That would be good. I would think if the Oilers are good enough to make it to the final or win it this year, his stock will go way up and they probably won’t be able to afford him. If he has a bad year, then do you want to resign him? Yeah, that is a very valid point. If he wins the cup, his value goes through the roof. Yeah, 100%. Especially if it’s a cup like was it against Dallas? Didn’t he have three shutouts in four games at one point? Was it two and three? Like that’s pretty big. That he’s shown up. He He’s shown he can be that guy, but it’s just not consistent. And sometimes there are some ones that just kind of make you scratch your head like damn, I need a save there. MTR says that last text was awful. Who has more goals this year in the finals, Pods or McDavid? They lost seven games uh game seven two years ago and he let in two goals and Yanmar scored your only goal. Yeah. So that that’s it. I’m not trying to like slant the two two of the best players in the world. One of them is the best player in the world. But when you get that far and you lose that close and those guys don’t do anything, I think you got to put a little bit more of the emphasis on them and less on your goalie who’s making $2.6 million, you’re not going to get a vasilei performance or you consistently or you shouldn’t expect that when you’re paying someone that little farmer says, “Guys, do we not forget without picker, we may not have gone to the finals either.” Absolutely. totally correct. You know, he came in both playoff runs here and was fantastic. Did what he had to do to get them in there. So, yeah, Dallas, you’re totally right about that one. GG says, “I would like to land somewhere between six and seven with Steuart Skinner.” And that’s kind of the way like if he has another good season, that’s kind of where I’m thinking it’d be. Bennington’s at 6 mill, Marshmall 6 mill, Aiden Hill 6.25, John Gibson 6.4 four out in Detroit. Lucas thy 6.5. That’s kind of where like if he has another good season, I think that’s going to be where it is going to be. Then if it’s a tough season, well, who knows? Do the Oers look to go elsewhere potentially and they still might do that. I mean, there’s a chance they still make a move during the regular season. Let us know. 183341440. Is there a price point that you would be comfortable with a Steuart Skinner extension? Or maybe you’re of the side that you just want to move on. We had uh Kevin Woodley on the show earlier today talking about the Detroit Red Wings and some of their goalie prospects that who knows, maybe they could be made available by trade. Maybe they get to choose where they end up. It’s uh it is interesting. Uh still watching your Remick out there at Cattail Crossing. He’s at ball 1,325. He’s rolled it onto the cusp of the green. Like I would be so happy about that shot in real life. Now you watch this and the the tribulations. Your Ram truck just dropped the glove. He’s walking away. Got the phone out now. Checking Twitter. It’s got to be deflating that everybody is chirping him in the chat. Is he getting cooked a little bit? Justin texted in just said just had a peek at Tyler’s endeavor. He’s completely out of gas and hitting full swing five irons that are going what 95 yards. He’s going to pay the man. Uh 10 hours in. 10. He’s got 14 hours to go. Mathematics say if you just hit enough golf balls, you’ll you’ll probably get it. But oh, his wife Amber’s there. That’s nice. And that’s good. Or she’s serving it with papers. When we talk to Tai on his regular scheduled Wednesday hit, we’ll talk about this and more sports. But today, we just wanted to kind of get an update on this one. And hey, raising money for the Ben Stelter Foundation. And then did they also raise money for something else? I think he said something else. Uh this Yeah. Got him to take his shirt off. He’s looking This is going to be the toughest part of it. The mental side of it right now. Oh, totally. He should. If he was smart right now, he would shut it down for two hours. And the physical side. You have so much time. Does he have a masseuse coming? I don’t think so. You should. He should get a quick rub down. If you’re a masseuse or a massage therapist or just an enthusiastic amateur, drive out to Cattail Crossing. Tell Tyler you’re a professional masseuse. I don’t think he’ll ask many questions because he’s he’s like shoulders. I think it looks like he’s gesturing that his hands hurt. No. Send your positive vibes to Tyler. He needs to hit a hole in one. What if he does it with like 3 minutes remaining? Wow. Like a countdown clock. Yeah. He’s putting his hands in a bucket of ice right now. Oh, really? Yeah. It’s swelling. He’s got someone cleaning the grass in front of him, too. I believe that’s his wife. The funniest thing about this was his confidence. He’s like, I don’t even think I’m going to need like 6 hours to do this. I respect that. But like we have like Brandon Douglas who talked about like if he got 100 at bats with a major league pitcher, like he thinks he could have some success. He’s like, “Well, they’re going to slow down, too.” I’m like, “Yeah, but you’re going to slow down as well.” Our real life podcast that we do, it started with Jay saying he could get a home run at Telus Field and we chirped him for weeks and then he did. He had someone come do batting practice and he put one over the wall which blew all of our minds. So Tyler I think is trying to follow in his footsteps by declaring himself capable of great things. What are you more likely to do? Hole in one or home run? Home run. I think so too. I’m probably doing neither. But yeah. Yeah. Tiger says, “Why do you read that crap loser text and less of and not more of me?” Well, you haven’t texted in in a while, Tiger. I get your stuff on here. There we go. Tyler’s got a split in his third finger he’s showing. MTR says, “Last thing I want to see is your chick getting rubbed down live on stream.” There’s a little massage. Yeah, he needs it. Yes. What else am I supposed to say to refer to that? It’s a rub down. Grow up. I saw Josh Fenwick over there smirking too. Little disgusted face. Someone just asked, “Is Tyler going to kiss bag milk or his new wife first when he gets the hole in one?” Maybe bag milk and Amber will kiss and Tyler will run around in a circle. I asked him, “What’s your plan, Sally?” And he said he couldn’t even go there. He said, “It’s just going to be in the minute the moment.” I think he might just fall to his knees. Start crying. I’m like, “I’m done. I did it.” But yeah, now we’re getting the view of the hand. Doesn’t look too bad. Oh, he’s got the nice wedding ring on, too. But yeah, he’s got some crazy He left it on. Yeah, I would. Take your ring off. What the heck? And you know what? Get that metal thing off you. Oh, you got the squishy ones. Won’t be breaking my fingers. Do you have a fancy one, too? Yeah. Yeah. I took me about one day of wearing my fancy one and I said, “This is uncomfortable.” And ordered these on Amazon. We got like 10 different colors. What? Yeah. They’re located all around. It’s like Lip Chap. I’ll never lose them. 10 days into marriage. You said this is uncomfortable. Like two days in. Wow. Yeah. Two days in. Fat fingers, man. He says, “I’m just tuning in. What is Tyler doing?” Well, Tyler is doing a 24-hour challenge out at Cattail Crossing, Manny, where he is trying to hit a home run and raise, not a home run, a hole in one, and trying to raise money for charity. Someone just donated $14 to the chat and said, “This donation is in memory of your Mchuk’s hands.” You’re not wrong. All the money straight to the Ben Stelter Foundation. Ben Stelter Foundation raising money. So, a great cause. Shout out to Tyler for doing this. Hacksaw says, “Boys, tell the chucker that he would have been far better off using a baseball bat or a hockey stick.” Talking your Mchuck here. What a challenge he is in for. And Mike says, “Hey guys, oil cannot be caught paying Stu Skinner five plus million sheets to watch him allow every goal a goal every 1.7 higher chances in the playoffs. Let someone else make that huge mistake.” And Mike, I would say like I I get what you’re saying, but if you’re not going to pay him, who are you going to pay? Who’s available? Can you make a trade? Kujo, bring back. Yeah, I don’t know if that glove hand is quick as it used to be, but people that were born in that era or watched hockey in that era, I think have unreasonably high expectations for franchise goalies in 2025. Cuz there used to be 10, 12 goalies back in the day that you could argue was like a team leading goalie. Yeah. If not a franchise player. And now there’s what, four, five? Yeah. Not as much. And like teams are trying. They’re drafting goalies every year developing. But we got to make goalie pads free for all minor hockey kids that want to play goal. That’s how you get goalies of the future. Yeah. We got to stop showing goal highlights and start showing save highlights. We don’t want all the rich kids to be the goalies. We want the good goalies to be the goalies naturally. Yeah. Hey, you know what? Goalending’s been like a hot button issue with Hockey Canada, right? Remember on the WHL, was it this whole CHL banned uh European goalies? They did. Or did I make that up? Did they limit them? I don’t know. Maybe I’m just spelling off. Oh, Tyler showing his hands. Let’s take a break. When we come back, five questions with Declan Krueger. It’s the Jason Greger Show here on Sports 1440 and Oilers Nation Facebook and YouTube. Brought to you by playalberta.ca. Connor Hally, Juan Gratz, Delan Krueger, and Josh Fenwick with you here. Uh again, thank you to everyone uh for texting in when the mics are live. We appreciate that. And a special shout out to Jean Principe as well. Oh no. Jean, we thank you. Oh no. And also shout out to Gan on the marathon finish and everyone else who did it. Jean. Yeah, Jean was moving. Yeah, great time. He’s a great runner. We had a lot of people out there that were doing the marathon almost inspiring me to go out for a run. Almost. You won’t. I’m not opposed. You know what? I just find running boring. Could you run a half marathon if you had time to train? Absolutely. Really? I think so. I was uh when we lost lost our jobs, I was going to the gym every day and uh yeah, I’d hop on the treadmill and do at least 30 minutes and then like go do some more and then do a bike ride. And then the minute you got your job back, you quit. We came here. Well, I know. You work You work a day and you get lazy. And then that dang food court, man. Downstairs. Yeah. Which one’s getting you, which isn’t really? Both of them. When you walk down there, they all just cheer when they see you. Hooray. That guy. There’s a certain fast food establishment that does a two for six deal. Two burgers for six bucks. Like, you can’t beat that. You can’t afford not to. Yeah, exactly. Um, but anyways, yes, shout out to everyone who did the marathon yesterday. Uh, one day maybe I’ll do that when I get off my lazy self. Declan, you could probably run a marathon. E, half marathon. Oh, for I’ve ran nine half marathons. Yeah, simultaneously. Um, no. Consecutively? Uh, I used to ran I used to run one about once a month for like a nine-month period. Obviously, I um I never ran a marathon because I I don’t know like I thought there are two people who ran marathons. People who want to do it once to prove to themselves they can do it and people who are legitimate marathon runners who are hitting, you know, time trials and things like that. And I was neither. Like I always knew I could run one. I just didn’t want to. You know what I mean? So I never did. What’s the third type? I think there’s only two. Oh, there’s only two. What about people who just got a divorce who want to show their ex what they lost? Oh, that you know what? Good point. So, there are three. Probably four or five if we keep going down this train of thinking. But Mount Rushmore of people who run marathons. We won’t do that one. We got another one. That’s a good one for Mount Rushmore of guys who love to tell you about their activity they’re currently doing. Like marathon runners are high at the top of the list for that. Oh yeah, they love to tell you. But it is an incredible feat. Like even just doing a half marathon, who cares about your time? If you’re able to cross the finish line, you have my stamp of approval as a OG. Let’s get to five questions brought to you by the brick. [Music] It’s time for five questions on the Jason Greger show. Okay, question number one. and Tyler obviously doing the ace race challenge out at Hattail. We’ve talked a bunch about it today. Uh listen, could you do it? How long would it take you? And at what point would you mentally break? It is a hard thing to get a hole in one. I say I peaked at about an eight handicap in my life. So I consider myself able to get around the golf course. I do not think I could do this. I just think that it’s more of a can you keep swinging at the ball effectively after hour seven and I think they’re just going to hit the limit of human endurance. Yeah, I don’t think I could do it. Like I I respect that Tyler’s going for it and I don’t think there’s any circumstance where I would be able to. Uh I’d love to give it a go for maybe an hour and then probably tap out, but no, I I don’t think I could do it. Um if there’s any course that wants to let me try for an hour, we can set this up for you. Yeah, just go swing it out there. I don’t want I don’t need cameras or anything. Just go whack it around for a little bit. But uh no, I don’t think I would do it. I’d have to get super lucky. And it’s tough. There’s a reason it’s what one in 12,000. That was the number we got. That’s what he told us. I’m not getting 12,000 swings off. So I don’t think I could do it. Question number two. Edmonton Alex went their second in a row this past weekend. What is their ceiling as a team? What did Michael Jordan say? The ceiling is the roof. I don’t Good line. I don’t I don’t know. I I mean, cuz you know what? Like, could they beat a Saskatchewan? I don’t think so. Saskatchewan’s a really good football team. Could they beat the Stampeders? Maybe. I mean, it’d be tough. Is Vernon Adams playing? I I think the ceiling for them, if all things go correct, and they’d have to get on a really good run, would be first round playoff loss. That’s what I’m going to say. Cuz if they get to the playoffs, they’re going to place a good team. And I just don’t know if they’re going to be there yet. So, the absolute ceiling and it’s optimistic as it has to be for the ceiling. I would say first round of playoff loss this year. This year, I mean, hey, I picked him to uh cross the wild card at the start of the season or uh crossover. So, if they got there and lost, that’s a successful season. But I think this is a respectable CFL team, Declan, and I think they’ll be hanging around the playoff hunt this year. And I think they’re going to make the playoffs next season. Yeah. No, I think they’re going to make it this year, honestly. Really? I got to Well, I’m really really bullish on the team. In my mind, they’re already seven and six. Unreal. They’ve already beaten Ottawa next week, won both Labor Day games against Calgary, and then beaten Toronto the week after that. Like, in my mind, when I think of the Elks, I’m like, this seven and six team is sure looking up. This team’s on fire. Holy cow. Okay, clue number not clue, sorry. That’s a little throwback to uh how my name is. Uh question number three. Joe Flacco named the Browns starter today. How many games does he play and what is this Browns team record this year? Well, as I said into a hot mic earlier, I can’t believe that they went with this. Flaco or Flaco? Flaco. Flaco. Elite Joe Flacco. Preposterous. Shador Sanders is just waiting in the quarterback room. His personal symbol is a dollar sign with a squared sign. I mean, what more do you need? I think they’re going to go five and 12. Dang. Well, it’s actually not that bad. I mean, I think the Saints will be worse than them. Um, the question, how many games does he play and what is their record this year? So, this is how I think it’s going to start. A loss to the Bengals, a loss to the Ravens, a loss to the Packers, a loss to the Lions, a loss to the Vikings, a loss to the Steelers, a loss. It’s not going well. Throw one W in there. A loss to the Patriots. Boy, then they get a by-week and that’s when they make their change of course. Loss in the bye-week. So they get their bye-week and then they say this is when we got to make a change because we’re 0 and8 it hasn’t gone well. Shadur comes down from the scoreboard starts roping passes and then they beat the Jets. They lose to the Ravens. They beat the Raiders. They beat the Tennessee Titans. Three wins. But the Saints only have one. And I get two free lunches. Really? Yeah. Two burgers for six bucks. Oh, no. We’re going somewhere else for that. We’re going to the nicest food spot in the food court. Uh, yeah, I I’ll say between three or four wins this year. Question number four. I have my fantasy draft tonight. Which is one player in all your years of fantasy. Who was your biggest steal and one who was your biggest bust? I have never in my life played fantasy football, but I do have a Conor McDavid doll made entirely of my own hair. Can’t have it all, Deck. All right. Well, can’t have it all, buddy. Uh, all right. It’s weird. Other Connor, I call him. Other Connor. Hey, that was the name of my podcast. Sleep with it. It’s for me to know. Do you cuddle? Well, mistakes have been made. All right. Biggest steal. Uh, I don’t know about biggest steel. I won. Like last year, I got Saquon in the second round, which was quite nice. Um, not really a steal, but I picked Pton Hillis up off the waiverwire that one year when he was really good. You guys remember that? Biggest bust, Kyle Pittz every year, probably. I hate myself that I always go back to him. Uh, I also before Kyle Pitts, my guy was David Nooku, and he was not good for the first couple years, but I thought he was going to be. And then the year I don’t take him, he kind of burst onto the scene. So, it’s usually the tight end position for me. I took Mark Andrews last year. I don’t know how to draft tight ends. Um, so Kyle Pittz, Dean, I want to ask you that question as well, though. Well, I remember I feel like my biggest steal in my keeper league, the one I’m drafting in tonight, I’ve got Brock Bowers in the seventh round last year. So, I get to keep Brock Bowers for a sixth rounder. Pretty sick. I also got Jonathan Taylor, I think, in the second round that year. He led the league in points. That was huge for me. Uh the biggest draft bust we did our draft really really early one year couple years ago like beginning of August and I drafted um Travis Etien in the second round and then he tore his ACL like two days later and was out for the season. So not necessarily a bust but my second round pick was gone all season. Is that bad when he tears his ACL? It was he didn’t play. So it was not it was not great. Question number five, give me your Mount Rushmore of potties. This is crazy to ask on a Monday. All right. Natalie Portman, but during Star Wars Phantom Menace, episode one. Margot Robbie, circa Wolf of Wall Street. Bad Del Rey. Circa Born to Die album. Queen Elizabeth II, Rest in Peace, Circa World War II. Those are my four. That’s on the mountain. Put them up. It’s a pretty good one. The first three, especially about Q2. Obviously, she’s a hottie. Obviously, we fell off a little bit at the end. The first three that had respect to the queen, but still. See, I’m Natalie Portman in Attack of the Clones kind of when she’s got like that white garb on and she just gets clawed by the dinosaur or whatever. Dinosaur in Star Wars. Declan beast. Space beast. Is that what you saw? Hey, she looks like like every time I watch them, I’m just like I could I wish I was helping. The Jurassic World crossover episode made a trillion dollar Jedi versus dinosaurs. Two built-in audiences. It would it would thrive. Um, well, I have to say my wife cuz it’s, you know, facts. Uh, Shakira. Oh boy. What circa hips don’t lie video? Whenever. Wherever. Whenever. Forever. It’s Shakira. She’s aging very well. her ex-husband Gerard PK Gerard PK idiot. What do you mean? She went on a few dates with Jimmy Butler. That guy. Jimmy Butler’s a smart man. Uh, I also had Marggo Roby and uh, is it Roi or Robbie? Robbie. Oh, sorry. I’m thinking of the old quarterback. Don’t get her name. I’ll defend my Mount Rushmore. Whatever. And a girl I just found out existed today. Madison Beer. In the first day of you knowing, she made your Mount Rushmore. He is dating Justin Herbert apparently. And that man has exquisite taste. So that’s cool. 40 million Instagram followers. They She’s outside of Taylor Swift, probably the most popular quarterback’s girlfriend. Jack, you going to chime in? Yeah. I mean, so I listen, I guess I have an answer. Uh, someone who’s skyrocketed to the top of my Mount Rushmore pretty recently. Uh, Maline Klein. Oh, throwing her up there. Uh, Margot Robbie, obviously, she pronounced Roi according to our co-host. She stays on the Mount Rushmore of Hotties. Uh I would also probably have to throw uh Monica Kina Circa Freddy vers Jason 2003 on the Yeah, real good pick though. And then the last pick uh you know let’s not like let’s not let’s not get too crazy here. Let’s just stay chalk with it. Uh Emily Ratajakowski. Oh yeah. From Entourage Ratata. What about Sydney Sui? She’s the hot her and Anna the de Armas just missed. She’s fake dating Tom Cruz. They were the next two out. Yeah. What about Tate McCrae? You guys love her. I’m I’m not the biggest Tate McCrae guy. Oh, I thought you I thought you Oh, maybe it’s Donovan and the Duke. They love Tate McCrae. Tate McCrae? Yeah, the youths love her. Nothing good’s ever coming out of Calgary. She’s from Calgary. What about Taylor Hall? I stand by my statement. Denise Richards from Wild Things. Not so much now, says Brad from the North Side. Well, you got that’s why you got to put the circa in. I don’t know. I think all mine are just timeless. Wow. We’re still young men. Yeah, 100%. Oddball says the Golden Girls. It is shocking to see how young the actresses that played the Golden Girls were when they filmed the Golden Girls, but they don’t look young. And Cheers. It’s also shocking to see how old the people in Cheers were when they filmed Cheers. I will say that uh if you go back Sophia Is that her name? Yeah, she was the youngest of all the actresses, but like barely. I’ve been one of them. But they had her wigged up and the whole thing. She is so damn funny. We’re watching that show right now. She was like, I know I think in this show she had like a stroke, so now she has no filter. She’s so funny. It holds up her comedy. Is that why she got to say all that wacky stuff? Cuz she Yeah, that’s what it is. And then like the these girls have a new man all the time and they don’t even like introduce it. It’s just like, oh, I’m dating this guy. I think he might propose to me. Come on. Yeah, it’s a wild show. Blanchch, what will you do next? Oh, Blanchch. So, you’re re-watching Golden Girls? Well, I never watched it. Like, I periodically watch. You’re watching for the first time. We’re on season two. I wasn’t even born yet. Wow. I wasn’t even born yet. I’m old. So, yeah, we’re watching it right now on Disney Plus. It’s aging well or Yeah, I told you. Sophia is so funny. Some of those 90 shows are crazy. I started watching Full House a little bit. Yeah. And it’s amazing the amount of morals they’re trying to push on you throughout the episode. Absolutely. You learned a little, you laughed a little. The olden shows are the best shows. All right. Uh we’ll take a break. When we come back, we’ve got Mark Spectre. Also going to talk to Alex running back Justin Rankin is the Jason Greger. So Connor Hley and Wan Gretz sitting in. But first, a sports 1440 update with Declan Krueger. Brought to you by Cattail Crossing. Mondays just got cute. Bring your pup and hit the greens. Gamesenseab.ca. Declan, I would like to know what your plan would be because I know you have one if you won $75 million. Oh man, I think I think I’ve told you this. I’m donating like all of it. What? Yeah. I’m going to give a little to my mom, little to my dad, uh, put little to my sister, put some away for my brother, little for an engagement ring, wedding, honeymoon, and donate the rest. Like, if I won $75 million, ideally, I’m giving away like 70 million of it. And you’re going to live on the other five? I don’t. No, I’m just going to keep working this job and like living off this salary. No one needs that much money. And think of all the good you could do with that money. And people always think I’m being a performative ass hat when I tell them this, but no, man. If I did come into that money, it’s it’s it’s not mine. Like if someone’s like, “Hey, I want to date you. You have $75 million.” I’d be like, “No, I do not. That money is all getting donated.” Ask me what I’d do. What would you do on you? I would assemble a militia. We would get on the river boat and we would take Leuke by storm. Me and a bunch of military contractors. Listen, that’s a more fun way to spend the money for sure. It’s a solid ROI. Leuke. All right, let’s go to the spec report brought to you by GS Construction. They specialize in underground infrastructure. They make your life more enjoyable with running water and indoor plumbing. The grinders of the construction industry, GS Construction. We bring in Mark Spectre of Rogers Sports Net. Spec, how was the weekend? How you doing? Does the river even go through Leuk? It does. 75 million. Some jet engines back. I get it. If you’re going to storm the shores of Devon or something, you know, but Leuk, I’m not even sure the North Saskatchewan goes there, man. In fact, I haven’t looked into the details fully yet. I mean, we’re still on the drawing board. Well, the text line agrees. Leuke by River. What? Yeah. I mean, might not work for you, Devon. Then, fine, Deon. It is. I don’t see anybody else having military plans with the lotto win. Uh, Spec, quick question for you because we talked about it a little bit earlier on and Kevin Woodley joined us as he does every Monday. We talked about Steuart Skinner and potential extension and and now we were talking, you know, right now and I think this is a could be a make or break year for Steuart Skinner. Maybe not make or break, but a good year could go a long way for him financially going forward. So, if you had to guess the first number of his next contract, talking AAV here, what are you thinking? Oh, boy. The first number. Well, I mean, it depends. Like, let’s say the year before last, he had a year he was he was a top eight goalie in the league. I think if you went through all the stats, you can always argue and say this stat’s more important than that and blah blah blah, but he was about a top eight goalie in the league. like the eighth best overall statistics. If he did that again and I’m his agent, I’m saying to you, well, this team wasn’t very good in front of him the year, the middle year, his stats weren’t as good because of that, but you have to pay me like a top 10 goalie in the league. So, I would ask you, what’s top 10 salary for goalies? Like, if that’s got to start with seven, doesn’t it? I don’t even know. I haven’t done the math. What? Give me your go look up the list of the top 10 paid goalies and tell me what the you know what the eighth guy makes. I will. I will as soon as I bring it up here. Uh because yeah, we talked about it and there was some numbers start coming in there like we had someone say four million which to me no chance no chance it’s going to be that low. Um someone else had kind of sit between six and seven depending on how he plays this year and to me that seemed a little bit more realistic. I think L like the stall was kind of in that category. So, you know, maybe that went on and Gibson was still there. Obviously, he’s coming towards the end of his contract. Uh, but when you goenders here, uh, in terms of AAV, obviously Shurken, Carrie Price still up there. Babski’s at $10 million. Then you dip under the double digits. Vaselki, Thatcher, Demco, Connor Hellbugs at eight. You’ve got Lionus Almark at eight, Auterroken, Swayman, and then down to UC Sarus at 7.7. Okay. What’s Autoner make? makes 8.25. And who’s been the better goalie in the last two playoff series when Emin played Dallas? And that’s what I said I would be in my exact argument if I’m Steuart Skinner’s agent. I’m playing Stuart Skinner’s agent here. But I’m here to tell you he’s a better playoff goalie than Jakeer. Full stop. Recent history, two years in a row, he is better. Period. So if making eight, my guy’s making eight. So listen, you don’t there’s no charity here. the owners are making scads and scads of money. When Mr. Kates goes to sell this team, it’s going to be worth a few billion dollars and his investment on it was less than a billion if I’m not mistaken. So my point is everyone’s making money. If I’m Stu Skinner, I’m making money, too. And I’m making what I deserve. And if I’m a top 10 goalie in the league and I got more playoff wins than any guy, let’s say they go to a cup again this year, he’s gonna have the most series wins of any player outside of Babski in the entire league over the last three years. Pay me. Pay me like that guy. That’s what I would say. Yeah, but Broski is coming at $10 million a year. So, I’m totally with you. I think that the team success right there and everything he’s done, he’s going to get paid and uh good thing the cap’s going up and and we’ll see exactly what that number turns out being. Mark Spectre joining us here on the Jason Greger show. Connor Hley Bonnet Gretz sitting in for the vacationing Jason Greger on Friday night. Spect the Edmonton Alex picking up the big win over the Argos. We saw the defensive line make some plays. Justin Rank and absolutely going off in that game. Uh what were your takeaways from the game on Friday night? Well, I I like the way they identified that Jason Rank and I don’t know if they went into the game saying he’s going to be our feature player and we’re going to give him a chance to be a superstar tonight or if it just unfolded that way. But either way, as it became clear early in the game that he was working. Uh the offensive line was was giving him room to work. The Toronto defense wasn’t keeping up with him. To me, what I loved is the fact that they just pounded the ball to this guy. They gave they they they gave it to him in handoffs. They gave him passes in the flat. They they screen passes, draw plays, off tackle. Like they identified a guy that Toronto couldn’t handle and they just pounded Toronto with that guy and that’s how they won a football game. And it’s it doesn’t sound simple, but sometimes teams get away from what works. I thought the Eskimos ident or the Elks identified early what works and went to town with it and won them a football game. Yeah. And I mean they they’ve certainly figured that out. There’s been multiple games this year where the running game just gets taken away. So for ranking he had 13 carries and I he just seems like a guy who can wear defenses down. He’s got that physicality to his game, but also in space he can make plays and you mentioned it like I think he had 77 yards after the catch which I didn’t know he had in his game when he first got to this team. I thought this is a guy who’s going to pound it in between the tackles but man as a receiver he makes some absolutely huge plays and you know the defense starting to come together as well. Yeah, listen, the defenses numberswise, like if you just look at the points allowed the last three games, I think four games, I’m going back to the Saskatchewan game where they allowed like 24. They played Hamilton. I forget how many they allowed, but it started with two. Um, who did they beat last week before they beat uh Yes, thank you. The defense was excellent in Montreal and they held the Toronto to a good number, too. is like if your defense is holding the other team to below 25 in the CFL, that’s enough, right? If it’s 20 or less, you got to win. If it’s 25 or less, you should win. And that’s what they’re doing. So, we can discuss pressure and we can talk about takeaways and we could say, “Oh, we want this, we want that, running game, passing game, defensive backs.” I look at the scoreboard and the scoreboard the last four games for the Eskimos the I keep calling the Eskimos for the Alex defense I’m I’m going off my memory but I think they’ve probably averaged about 23 24 points against per night and that is absolutely enough to win football games in the CFL. Yeah, and you just go back to that game against the Taiats. They allowed 28 but probably should have won against the Riders. It was 21 uh 22 against the Alowettes and then of course on Friday night just 20 points. So there you go. You’re right. It’s low 20s and they’ve been winning football games and hopefully keep it going on the weekend up against the Red Blacks who will be down there starting quarterback on Friday. It looks like Mark Spectre joining us here on the Jason Greger show. Connor Hley Gret sitting in and let’s talk a little Toronto Blue Jays because uh another series win over the weekend. Now they get set to take on the Pittsburgh Pirates which underway the last 30 minutes or so here. uh a chance to watch Paul Skins. And I know Spec, you’re a Cubs fan, so maybe you get a chance to watch him a little bit more often when they go head-to-head, but uh for for a guy playing on such a bad team, he sure is fun to watch. Yeah, and you better watch him in Pittsburgh quick, isn’t it? Is his deal up this year? Doesn’t he leave after this year? I don’t I think he’s going to be around there for a little while. I think Major League Baseball teams have the rights for a little bit, but I don’t know. I I mean, I know they were talking about at at the All-Star game about who he was going to be playing for. So either way, my point is this. When the moment the door cracks open, he’s leaving Pittsburgh and going to one of the big boys, right? He’s going to the Dodgers, he’s going to the Yankees, going to Boston. He’s going somewhere. Uh going to the Cubs hopefully, but he’s unbelievable. He’s he’s by far the best thing that’s happened to the Pirates in ages. And it’s very sad to me what’s happened to the Pirates. That’s a great franchise. Anyone who’s been to their ballpark, it is an unbelievable ballpark. And so much a great night in Major League Baseball to spend in Pittsburgh walking over that Roberto Clemente Bridge, going to that park, seeing the old Pirates play. Like there’s a ton of tradition in that team and they just stink. They don’t have a chance to win. Their ownership doesn’t spend any money. The fans don’t expect them to win even a little bit. It’s very sad to me. And uh Paul Skins is a great example. He they’ve groomed up a you know developed an unbelievable right-hander here and the minute his contract opens up he will say to Pittsburgh. Yeah. Right now four strikeouts through two innings for skins. Pirates lead the Jays one- nothing. Lots of ball to be played. I think you just got to try to wear skins down and get him out of the game and then hope bats explode which I guess has been a problem for the Pirates this year. Uh you look at the Blue Jays right now Spec. Uh is this a team that you think can do some damage in the playoffs? Well sure why not. like the to me what what I like about them is they seem to be able to get you a lot of different ways. You know, they they’ve been winning games when the when the big bats like Vlatty and Bette carry them with a couple home runs. They got they’ve got power throughout their lineup with Vo and Springer. Uh and you know, different guys. They don’t need it to be the same bat every night. Uh let’s hope the closer holds up. I mean, he’s a major league closer. Uh, and again, let’s hope the bullpen holds up, but right now the bullpen’s been very good. And frankly, they got more than five starting pitchers that everyone seems to like. I’m not sure what they’re going to do because they got six guys here. And uh who’s the guy they picked up that’s uh starting on Friday night? Beaver. Beaver starting Friday night. So, if he turns out to be a pitcher, it’s going to get awfully crowded in that uh pitcher, you know, end of the locker room. So, my point is this. I like the fact that they’ve got so many elements that are pretty good. I’m not telling you any of the elements are world class great, but they find a way to win every night because it doesn’t have to be the same way every night. And that in baseball goes a long long way. Yeah, it’s true. And I remember the the Mariners a couple years ago, it felt like they were kind of getting uh death by a thousand cuts. It was like small ball and just kind of bloop singles making it work for them, eliminating the Jays. And yeah, I’m looking forward to it. And we actually had Thomas Holl on the show covers the Jays for Blue Jays Nation and he was telling us that he thinks Bieber could be a wild card to be the starter game one of the playoffs. Like if he if he finds his game, he’s got that stuff and the Jays, they got the nice rotation. So it’s going to be fun. Spec, thanks so much for doing this today and we’ll do it again tomorrow 5:00. All right, sounds good, Connor. There you go. Mark Spectre of Rogers Sportset joins us every day here on the Jason Greger show at 5:00 or close to it. They asked me, are you going to come back after Gregor’s show? I was like, I don’t know. Tornado warning. Tyler probably loses his mind at about 8:00. Yeah, I’ll be back. Yeah, true drama. Well, we’ll take a break here. When we come back, we’re going to talk some football and uh got a guy whose thoughts on the green and gold are probably better than anyone else’s because he’s on the team. I want to be there when the enormity of what he said he could do sets in and the instant he breaks and realizes he can’t do it. I want to be there to shove his face into the tea box. It’s a little breakdown. I’ll take a walk. I’ll need a pep talk at that point. I’m not here to pep talk him. I’m here to jump on him when he’s already down. And Justin was a huge part of it. Justin, hey, thanks a lot for doing this today. How are you doing? Heck yeah. I’m good, man. How y’all doing? Oh, we’re doing really good. And uh it was quite the performance by you on Friday night. 13 carries, 92 yards, and a score. And then doing it also through the air. Five targets, five receptions, 87 yards, 77 of which were Yak. Uh how were you feeling on Friday night? It seemed like one of those games where they just had to keep feeding you the ball because every time you touch it, big things happened. Yeah. No, I mean, I was definitely feeling good, but you know, at the end of the day, like it’s always a team effort. You know, it’s the ultimate team sport. And um you know, like I said before, I just appreciate, you know, the guys, the coaches, you know, the um uh Cody, you know, the receivers just trusting me to be able to, you know, make plays and, you know, continue to block downfield and and the effort, the extra effort plays that they were making, you know, for me to be able to do, you know, what I was doing on Friday. Was there an emphasis maybe in the running back room or maybe even with uh coach Jordan Maximic about getting the run game going because you know even in your win you guys weren’t running the football that much this game 13 carries and I mean we were watching from the press box I’m thinking like those numbers got to be boosted because you’re averaging 7.1 yards per rush. Uh was was that a thought in this game that hey we got to get the run game going? Yeah, I think it’s been um you know kind of a thought something a emphasis that we’ve been pushing you know since the beginning of the year was uh just kind of you know making sure that we we could you know dominate the line of scrimmage. You know I think a lot of teams want to be able to dominate the line of line of scrimmage and you know we just kind of wanted to be more of a balanced team and you know be able to run the ball along and pass the ball especially having Cody back there you know throwing the way that he is. You know we want to be able to help him out you know limit limit guys just kind of with their ears peeled back and you know trying to just get to the QB. you know, when you when you’re able to run the ball, you know, just as good as you’re able to pass the ball. You know, it’s hard on the defense. You know, they don’t know what you’re doing. So, you know, it was definitely a big emphasis for us to be able to, you know, run the way that we did. And, you know, I think it helped, you know, our offense out a lot now. And the numbers you put up there through the air as well. And it’s something that the full confession hand up when you got to the team. I remember we were kind of watching and a lot of people saying if it’s lightning and thunder with Javon Leak, he’s the lightning, you’re the thunder, the power guy. And then this year through the air, I mean, we’ve seen what you’ve been able to do. the 24 yardd play. Uh you’re always open and then showcasing the hands as well. Is that something you’ve always had or is that something you’ve had to work on here? Yeah. No, I mean it’s something that I’ve always taken pride in, you know, from since college, you know, shoot since high school was just being as versatile as I can be. You know, if if a defense is scheming for the run and they’re stopping the run, you know, I want to be able to help out and, you know, through the air. And, you know, like I like I told, you know, everybody else before, you know, they brought me in as a receiver my first year, you know, with with the Els. So, you know, I was in camp, you know, playing R, you know, I was in the slot playing running a waggle. So, you know, being able to catch the ball and run routes, you know, like actual real routes, not running back routes, you know, um it’s it’s it’s no it’s not new to me, you know, it’s uh honestly, you know, I’m just I’m happy that, you know, they’re able to trust me to be able to do such a thing because I enjoy it. I enjoy being out there, you know, running routes, you know, I think it gives a different aspect, you know, to the whole offense in general. So, you know, definitely definitely not new. Yeah. Yeah, and you know, we’ve seen it from both quarterbacks, whether it be Trey Ford or Cody Fardo. They have that confidence in to throw to you downfield, not like you said, just the routes that you might see from a running back traditionally. Elks running back Justin Ranken joining us here on the Jason Greger show. Connor Hi sitting in. I want to ask you about lining up beside Cody Fardo and obviously, you know, when Trey Ford out there, it might be a little bit different when plays break down, he’s able to take off. But then you bring in a guy like Fajardo, who’s seen it all in the CFL, won great cups, uh, extremely accurate. What’s the luxury like having a guy like Fajardo back there as your backfield mate? Yeah, I mean he’s a vet. You know, he’s a true vet. He’s a true pros pro. And um you know, it takes a lot of pressure off of guys, you know, when uh you know, he’s back there, you know, kind of orchestrating guys where to go. You know, if if you if you kind of don’t know what you got on that play because you’re winded or you’re coming back, you know, he he knows what you got. He’s going to line you up. He’s going to make sure everybody’s good. And um you know it’s nice to have him back there you know just just talking to us before the play you know kind of scoping out the defense when they come out letting us know you know what he’s thinking you know what’s in his brain. So you know it definitely is nice to have him back there. I mean again like he’s been shoot in the league for what 10 years now you know like that’s that’s that’s amazing to have basically a coach you know out there playing with you. Now I saw the statistic come up there CFL had it. You had a top speed of 31 and a half kilometers which is absolutely ridiculous. Uh I know Javon Leak had a pretty big number last year. there’s any trash talk between you guys of who might win in a foot race. Uh we we talked about it a little bit honestly that was the shoot that’s one of my slower times this year. Uh you know we we talked about it on one of my bigger ones earlier. You know I told him I said hey look man I’m coming for you. You know everybody thinks I’m slow like I’m I’m coming for you man. You you got to deal with this one. But you know I still think at the end of the day leak leak is a lot faster than me and you know I think he shows that on a day-to-day basis. Yeah. I mean we’ve we’ve had the forwards on this show and there’s been a little bit of talk about who might be the faster one. If we’re talking a full team race, uh, where are you finishing, you think? I think I think I think probably like fourth or fifth. I think fourth or fifth. I think in I think it’s going to go straight forward, Javon Leak, Devadric, and then maybe like me, me me or me or Tyrell, you know? I think I think me and Tyrell might have a good race here. Pretty good list there. Pretty company, I would say. as we’re joined by Justin Ranker, running back for the Edmonton Els. They’re going to look to make it three straight when they take on the Ar Blacks on Friday night coming off a big win against the Argos. I want to ask you about this the offensive line and the job that they did in this game because, you know, hey, full confession, we talk about the offensive line quite a bit here and they’ve had some tough performances. the Rough Riders really did a good job in the pass rush uh getting to the quarterback, but in a game like that, you know, keeping Cody upright, uh providing holes for you, it seemed like they were really starting to kind of get things going here. Yeah, I mean, we we believed in it from day one, you know what I mean? And um you like everybody saw like it was a big emphasis for, you know, our protection, our pass pro and you know, our um our run protection just to kind of be better. and you know uh you know we we asked that of them and I think they more than you know showed up and you know proved to us that like what they could do you know and now it’s just about everybody coming together and being able to you know continue to stack games like that and play games like that because now now we showed that we could do it you know and um it’s one thing to show it once but it’s another thing to continue to do it and be consistent with it and that’s just kind of where we’re at now just being able to stack games like that when you went into the offseason and obviously last year I mean you had a very good season with the team uh great average when it came to rushing the ball 7.8 yards uh just under 800 yards on the season. Uh but year two in the CFL, what were the things you tried to work on in the offseason just to you know better yourself for the Canadian game? Yeah, the biggest thing for me was just you know being faster. Uh I think uh my first year there was a couple of runs that you know I think I I could have broke away just one guy and you know they kind of they kind of caught me or had the angle on me and um you know the biggest thing that I focused on in the offseason was just being faster. So some of those breakaway plays, you know, they either go for 20 more yards or, you know, a touchdown. And um I think I’m able to, you know, kind of showcase that this year that, you know, the the offseason training is working and, you know, I got a lot of faster and, you know, even the guys let me know like, man, like you you look good out there, you look faster out there. You know, we can tell that you’ve been working. So, you know, it feels good to to bring it from the offseason and, you know, put it into the season on the field and put it on tape. We’re joined by Justin Ranken, running back for the Els here on the Jason Greger show and the new coaching staff. uh obviously a firsttime head coach when it comes to Mark Kllum and coordinator, veteran coordinator, but you got JC Sh on the other side of the football running things on the defense and it looks like they’re getting better each and every game. What changed when Mark Kllum came in? Yeah, I mean I think a lot of things, you know, like uh he just kind of brought a different type of energy, you know, different type of vibe and different type of winning culture that, you know, he’s trying to instill in us. And obviously there’s a there’s a learning curve. you know, you bringing in all new guys, a whole new coaching staff, a whole new front office. Like, it’s not going to be perfect from the jump, you know, but I think a lot of people are able to see, you know, what the direction we’re going in, you know, and that arrow is always pointing up. And that’s something that we’ve been emphasizing is keep the arrow pointing up, you know, and that’s kind of where it’s going. That’s the direction it’s going in. And, you know, Coach Kllum brings that energy, that vibe of like that winner’s mentality, you know, uh, never give up, never quit. And I think every game, even the losses, like down to the fourth quarter, you know, we we showed that like we’re a team that’s going to fight, you know, to the to the clock hit zero. You know, whether whether we’re down by 30, whether we’re it’s a tie ball game, you know, we’re not about to give up. And I think that’s something huge that coach Kellum instills in us, you know, every day at practice, if it’s a rough start, you know, he he’s huge and like, look, it’s a rough start, but we’re going to finish. You know, we’re going to make sure we fight at the end of practice to finish and have a good day. And, you know, I love that. I love that mentality. Yeah. I mean, you guys have won the last two, but really, uh, game against the Tiger Cats could have won. Even the game against the Rough Riders going back to July, a game that was right there. So, yeah, you’re starting to really build something. We had Chris Morris join us on the show, president of the team. And he he had a really good statement, I thought, just talking about how, you know, unless I’m hit by lightning, this is the staff that’s going to be here. This is, you know, building that consistency as a player. How nice is it to hear that you know what like even if things don’t go well they’re trying to build something and you know keep the same players keep the same management keep the same coaching staff here and just try to build that consistency. Yeah it’s super nice. I mean, if you look around the league and, you know, you look at some of the teams that are consistently, you know, top dogs, the Winnipegs, the Montreals, like, you know, there’s not a lot of turnover, right? And, um, I think that’s that’s huge key, you know, in any league is, you know, being able to bring guys back, bring coaches back, bring players back, and, um, you know, be able to build the bonds, the relationships that make you play a lot harder for each other, right? Like, and the longer you’re in the system, the longer you’re with a coach, you know, obviously becomes a lot easier. you know, now I know what coach Mimik likes to call on certain situations. So, we’re ready for it, right? Like, um again, like this is all our first year together, you know, shoot, this is with with Cody at the helm. This is what game for, right? So, like we’re all still trying to, you know, get to know each other, learn, you know, what what we like, how we play, you know, and things things of that nature. Still building those bonds, you know? So to be able to be with a staff in a in a in an organization that wants to bring everybody back and is huge and big on that. I mean it’s that’s that’s big time because I think that’s that’s what creates winning organizations is, you know, the least amount of turnover that you can have, right? Justin Ranken of the Metal joining us here now. Justin, obviously Friday night you get the Ottawa Red Blacks on the road. Uh do you like going on into the the tougher environments playing on the road? Oh yeah, I love playing on the road. I always tell everybody it’s fun to be at home and, you know, hear the crowd cheering for you, but there’s nothing like, you know, just quiet quieting the crowd down, you know, especially a a a a good crowd, you know, at the weight game, you you break a run and you quiet them down, like, yeah, that’s that’s a good feeling, you know. So, you know, I love I love being on the road. I love being up for the challenge of being in somebody else’s house and, you know, having to take that W from them. So, have you had a favorite road uh city to play in? Oh, either Winnipeg or or or SAS. It’s hard to it’s hard to choose between the two, but man, both both of those places are amazing to play in. You know, I love playing in those hostile, loud environments. You know, those those those games are awesome. Those are the those are the games that, you know, you live to play for play in and play for. So, you know, that one out of one of those two. I can’t I can’t choose though. Well, good options. Yeah, I totally get what you’re saying. Some of the best environments in football going out to the prairies. Uh, a couple non CFL questions for you. Are you in any fantasy football leagues this year? Oh, no. I don’t even watch no football. So, I couldn’t tell you nothing about No. Leak always makes fun of me cuz he’ll bring up old football players. I’m like, I have no idea who that is. You know, they’re always watching football and stuff like that. I don’t I haven’t done fantasy football once in my life really. So, away from the field then. What kind of things do you get up to? Man, I go hiking, uh, go bowling, you know, read, um, just stuff to keep me occupied, play the game, but I’m not I’m not huge into watching sports. I love it, Cody. So, uh, go-to restaurants in an off day. Where are you heading in Edmonton? Oh, man. I tell you what, I just found a new ramen spot downtown, uh, called like, uh, Misoya Ramen. That’s the spot right there. It’s on 104th A on off of Jasper. That’s That’s the spot. That’s my new That’s my new go-to right there. Ringing endorsement. Well, hey, Justin, thanks so much for doing this today. Really do appreciate it. And good luck on Friday night against Ottawa and with the rest of the season. Most definitely. I appreciate y’all. Thank you. There you go. Justin Rankin, green and gold running back number five. A guy, man like I I tweeted it out one. This guy’s got to get the football like 30 times a game. Like every time he touches it, he makes things happen. Uh you know, he’s had a few plays where it’s like the ball’s in his hand. He’s five yards behind the line of scrimmage and five players are approaching him. But that’s football. But you stick with him. It doesn’t matter if that happens every once in a while. Get the ball in his hands because he’s just he’s an absolute weapon. And a dual threat running back in the CFL can be so dangerous. It’s he’s been fun to watch and I I think that’s kind of the key for the Elk success. You got to get the running game going. It has to be a threat. Uh you can’t have those games where they run the ball five times with running backs. You have to at least get that defensive line thinking, okay, they might run the football. You can’t just let them pin their ears back and blitz them come at the quarterback non-stop. But uh man, he he’s a fun player to watch. I think the Elks have got like for the casual fan, you’ll be impressed even if the team isn’t have doesn’t have a winning record currently. The quality of football of this team, they’re entertaining games. Yeah. Kind of refreshing to hear what he said, too. Like I don’t really watch football. Yeah. Like one of the best in the league, but you know, little Wayne Little Wayne doesn’t listen to other rappers. He only listens to himself. Really? Yeah. Good day for me. Last week I well a couple weeks ago I found the drought three was on Apple Music. Didn’t know it was. There you go. Classics. Would you say you’re ranking him number one? Oh, I don’t know if I can do that. There’s one thing I know about Leuke. It can’t be assaulted through the river. No, you gota have the different approach. Devon, on the other hand, is wide open. You got It’s a high bank. You got to climb up. That’s all right. you get hiking supplies. Uh James Butler pretty damn good with their BC Lions. Dri Mills has had a good season. AJ Wlette’s going to pound the rock. But Rankin, the thing with him is they haven’t had that commitment to run. And you know, early in the season, they’re losing football games. You’re going to be forced to pass the ball. But when it comes to yards per carry, he’s at 5.4. There’s a few players, but with with the heavy duty backs, James Butler’s at 5.5. So, like he’s right in there. Um, three touchdowns. When it comes to 10 yards or more, he’s got 15. That trails only Dietrich Mills and James Butler who have carried the ball quite a bit more than he has. Yeah. I mean, if you pro rate it to a full season, he’s kicking butt. He’s having one heck of a season. And then he also does it as a receiver. But, uh, I guess you got to give credit to the guys who statistically have been doing it all year long. But hey, if they if they can win football games, keep him in the loop. Uh those those rushing totals will go up. And I mean, he’s the kind of guy if you’re up in a football game by a possession or two and you’re trying to kind of wear to wear down the team, run the clock, I don’t have to tell you, An averaging five yards per carry. If you run that twice, that’s a first down. That’s a first down. That’s how you do it. The math maths it is. And if the offensive line keeps playing the way they have and you know how good they were last year, it’s going to go a long way. Uh we’ll take our final break here. Uh Wang, early on in the show, I had a little story cuz Friday I went and got a haircut and a guy rolls in behind me and his hair looked exquisite. Great hair. And I’m thinking, what are you doing? Like what what’s getting done here now? You might be in love with his hair stylist. That’s probably why he gets his haircut to keep it like that. How often do you get your haircut? Oh, you’ve fallen into an interesting trap, my friend. I haven’t allowed somebody to cut my hair since the millennium, which was what we called the millennium in the year 2000. I cut my own hair. Really? Yes. With like like a trimmers, buddy. Really point of pride. Yep. Started doing it basically to entertain myself and I was like, “Oh, I actually don’t need anyone to help me do this.” And I’ve done it myself. You wear hats a lot. Yes, that has nothing to do with it. How was your hair? Fine. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. No, I can not wear a hat. Yeah, but I I don’t know. I just do it my own. I do it on my own. Take that. Anxiety. I Well, yeah, I believe you. Okay. No. No. Like I’m not lying, but that’s an odd answer to a fairly straightforward. So, how often do you cut your hair then? Monthly. Like once a month. Yeah. Okay. See, like I’m three, four months. If you would have seen me last week, two weeks ago, you would have seen like it’s coming out the back. You oscillate styles too throughout the year. I’ve noticed you’ve got the short hair, sometimes a little bit longer. I didn’t like ever having short hair. And then one I went through a phase where I was like, “Oh, I can do this.” But then, yeah, you know, I’m going to grow it every once in a while. Look at me here. Oh, that’s you. Oh, yeah. Is that a mullet? No, it’s long cool guy hair. Oh, I had it in about It’s cool guy hair. Kind of look like a mullet. Look at me. Not a mullet. It’s just slick back. Oh, slick back. Showing everybody my driver’s license. I can’t. I couldn’t. My hair was down to my shoulders. Okay. Of course, no one knows I look like, but that was shockingly long. Some guy with shoulder length hair. Or knock. No one knows how long his hair is. Exactly. Mystery mystery guy. Um Yeah. Well, we had people that are like they go in like every once in a while. The beard guys are the ones who actually have to take care of it the most. It’s a lot because the beards Yeah, you require it. I like it though. I like barber culture. Like I like the the thought of going in there and hanging out, getting your haircut. I just don’t go very often. And when I go, I like silence. No one can talk to you. No, I’ll talk for sure. But if if the guy doesn’t want to talk to me, I’m good with it. We’ll just sit there and I don’t have the connection with a barber like that. Like I’m not like, “Oh, I got to go see my guy.” Because a lot of times I’d be on the road, too, in my life. So, I just keep it going on my own. Like Yeah. I go to different ones all the time. You do? Yeah. You’re not a monogamist. We just say uh two on the side and give me a little trim on top. Hold off the male pattern baldness for a little longer. Unreal it. Yeah. My four-year-old son went to get a haircut the other day. He said, “I want lightning bolts in the side so I can run faster.” And they did it. Theory checks out. They didn’t have lightning bolts when we were kids. Wasn’t even an option. I knew some people get like Nike swooshes. I like arc age. Yeah. Wow. If a kid like that went to my school, it would have been game over. They would have been elected principal. Yeah. We were changing things back then. Wow. Change the game. Then one day I just was like, I’m just going to buzz it then. Then I would just actually My mom would just cut it. I wouldn’t do it by myself, though. You could do it. Oh, yeah. Totally. Totally. We cut Benny’s hair. Yeah. Just a He had a little curl one. Let’s just clean this up. Yes. But I want him to have some long hair for a bit. It’s a good look. Good. Good flow to kick things off. Totally. Uh what would you say if I said we got into Wan’s world here? Well, I was the hot mic W’s world. I still feel like we’ve had an unplanned segment there. I’d like to just discuss this time of year because it’s the 18th of August. Gregor’s away. For some, it’s sort of the low point of the season, but for others, like the NFL season seems to start earlier and earlier and earlier, the hype every year. Yeah. Some might say it never goes away. And there’s a lot of storylines right now as the preseason starts. And as a big football guy, big Chargers guy, what are you what are the story lines you’re looking forward to next year in the NFL? I’m a big Sanders guy. Give me Give me a pick any team. Well, I’ll tell you a storyline that I’m interested. I love I love it. All teams. Like, what do you think as a macro level in the NFL? What do you think’s going to happen this year? Like, what would you predict? Madness. And we’re going to talk about the dumbest things and players are going to get arrested and sick suspensions and there’s going to be bad calls. Get just pick a team. The Chiefs. The Chiefs. Oh, I’m intrigued by Rashid Rice. Patrick Mahomes. Can he get back to his former self? cuz you look statistically the last three years statistically not as big as years you know can he regain that form uh the offensive line how are they going to look their first round pick Simmons people say he was a steel he had like a knee issue in a senior well last year at college at the Ohio State right duck knee injury for Simmons like is he going to be a steel give me another team like any team I feel like I can just I do it during fantasy frenzy every team we talk about I’m like oh I can’t wait this is my top three star well I mean are there going to be big movers this year in the NFL like the the top four teams have kind of been static for the last little bit. Do you think that anybody’s moving into that plateau or is it going to be going to be jockeying again? Like do you think the Chiefs will be back in the Super Bowl next year? I I mean if you if you give me the this year I would say I take the field. Like I would take the field that maybe the Ravens or the Bills. Broncos are going to be good. I don’t know if Bon Knicks gets them that far. I I would probably take the field but Chiefs will be right there. It wouldn’t be a bad pick. Uh, Eagles still gonna be a very strong team. What are you looking at the Cowboys for this year? Uh, well, Michael Parsons, what’s going to happen there? Uh, the running back position for the Cowboys, I’ve got questions about if it can, you know, balance with what the offense can do. Dak Prescott’s always going to be polarizing. But then you got George Pickkins. So, all of a sudden, they that’s probably the best complimentary receiver that they’ve had since CD Lamb was on the team. I think maybe Brandon Cooks was there for a year, but you know, Pickkins, if he’s not fighting opponents downfield, he can put up numbers. So, yeah, like I don’t know. He throw any team my way out. There’s Well, your beloved Chargers, what are you looking for there? Uh Justin Herbert, Omarian Hampton, rookie running back. Bold prediction. He is a better rookie year than Ashton Genty for the Raiders. Uh does his pass weapon step up? Um last year’s Lakoni, that’s all he had and it wasn’t very good elsewhere, but they bring back Keenan Allen. They draft Trey Harris. Uh Keandre Lambert Smith. KLS. This guy’s making waves as a fifth round pick. KLS. KLS. That’s a cool name. Well, some people call him Lambo. Oh, Keandre Lambert Smith. So, Lambo. Uh yeah, Justin Herbert has to win a playoff game. That’s He’s He’s got Madison Beer now. Now he’s got to win a playoff game to get the haters off his back and probably needs to win a couple. So, what about Cleveland? Oh, the quarterback room’s amazing. I mean, I’m so intrigued by that. There’s more people in the quarterback room than there is in the stands. They’re they they emerge as one of the names apparently trying to trade for Trey Hendrickson from the Bengals. They’re not going to trade him in division. It makes no sense. But um you know the quarterback that it has to start and end there. Uh tight end after David Nooku, they’ve got Fannon Jr. a guy named Harold. I really liked him in the draft process. So he’s someone to watch out for. What about Shador? Shador. Yeah. Well, I mean that’s a big one. Where is he going to end like is he where will his next 12 months take him in his football career? Oh, who knows? I mean, we talked about it five questions. I think when they lose all those games, they go to the by-week and then they go to Shadore. Can he pick it? Probably not. You the Browns like what’s the point of having Kevin Kenny pick it on your ro? Isn’t over the season already? Like, is that what they’re Well, yeah, essentially they said he’s working out again, but nobody cares, right? Well, he’s a shell of his old self. Is that That’s got to be considered the worst contract of all time. That’s not even close, right? Yeah, I would think so. Any sport that any sport worst contract all time? Uh there’s some bad ones, but that much fully guaranteed. There’s some NBA ones that are pretty interesting. You making so much term coming off the off-field problems. Plus, he didn’t play in the NFL. Nobody gets fully guaranteed money when it’s like, what was the logic? I don’t understand. Then Cleveland’s going to Brown. Like why would they have cuz when he’s when he was good he was really good but he didn’t play football for a year I don’t think like yeah and then fully guaranteed like the NFL is just like yeah that’s not happening anymore. Nobody got fully guaranteed contracts. Kirk Cousins on one-year deals maybe but that’s it. Kirk O Bucks. Anywh who that’s going to do it for us. We’ll see you tomorrow. Yeah we’ll be back tomorrow 2 o’clock doing it all over again.
