Why the San Francisco Giants Have Collapsed in 2025

San Francisco Chronicle columnist Ann Killion joins Foul Territory to break down the Giants’ collapse in 2025. From Bob Melvin taking heat for a team that hasn’t produced, to Rafael Devers unfairly catching blame, Killion explains how things unraveled after a promising start. She also discusses Buster Posey’s role in leadership, roster construction questions, and why San Francisco’s struggles are so puzzling despite strong fan support at Oracle Park.

  1. "They said hes a bad guy in boston so now hes a bad guy in SF and we cant win with him" Literally no one has said this, the fan base isnt against Devers

  2. Literally nobody has said Raffy is a bad guy… though he rubbed the BOS clubhouse the wrong way when he refused to help out the team by playing first.. even then… no one came out publicly and called him selfish.. so what are we talking about?
    Making shit up.

  3. Rediculous!!!!!!why the hell is washed up Wilmer still in the lineup? ARE YOU KIDDING ME! Play the young kids you morons!!!!!!!!! Sit Lee. Ramos. Crapman. Adames. Bailey. The problem is not Devers. The problem is The Giants Philiosophy of baseball is complete ASS!!!!!!!!!!!! Its plenty fair. Melvin sucks!!!!!!!! So yout statement is false.

  4. I love Posey, but bringing a pre-analytics 2012 mindset to a 2025 team isn't necessarily a fix in this day and age, even if it's the anti-Farhan approach. And it's not about signing big free agents either. Chapman and Adames are blown money in terms of building an agile team. Bailey's pitch-calling isn't the answer, either. And we won't bring up the "coaches" on nostalgia contracts who have no connectivity to today's game either.

  5. An 80-85 win team is being an 80-85 win team?! To paraphrase the great philosopher Gomer Pyle:

    SURPRISE
    SURPRISE
    SURPRISE

Give Buster Posey more time to get rid of Farhan Zaidi's deadwood. The kids, in general, aren't working out

The fans want manager Bob Melvin to take the train to Scapegoat City

  6. The Giants have had multiple opportunities to tear it all down and ownership refuses. You never want to be stuck in the middle of the pack in American pro sports. You want to be crap and tank, or be a legit contender. Being in the middle makes your job that much harder to acquire legit top talent to build around in the draft.

The ownership and management only have 3 ways to prove themselves. Either spend F you money on the roster like the Yankees, build legit contenders through homegrown prospects (which proves you have top class scouting and development), or you can tank to show your showing intent to finally have a legit roster. Doing none of these 3 should show the fanbase the ownership and management it's not serious about competing.

  7. I don't think the problem is Posey or Melvin. Those are old-school, no-nonsense tough guys. What the Giants are experiencing is a generational problem. Young people today don't respond well to adversity, to challenges, or to criticism and they don't know how to figure out problems, so they just desperately flail at everything until something works. Furthermore, most minor league systems are not preparing their players for the trials and tribulations of a 162 game season of big league baseball, and the Giants are no exception.

  8. Lifetime Giants fan here. My feeling is, as usual, they overrated their supposed 'foundational' players i.e. Chapman, Lee, Bailey, Fitzgerald, etc. These guys are all role players and not premium talent guys. In other words, there's still a lack of talent.

  9. Pitching has been atrocious, and hitting incredibly average. Devers has struggled here and there but he’s an elite hitter, I’ll be patient with him. However Heliot Ramos I have completely lost faith in. Statistically one of the worst outfielders in baseball, he has also really struggled at the plate since the all star break.

To me, this all comes down to coaching. Melvin yes, but also Burrell (hitting coach) and Martinez (pitching coach). I’ll give Melvin one more season, but the other 2 gotta go after this year. They are awful coaches

  10. It's time for Giants ballclub to finally admit that having Ramos/Devers at the top of the batting order has been a profound mistake.

    Here's my idea:

    1. Koss – 2B
    2. Adames – SS
    3. Ramos – LF
    4. Devers – 1B
    5. Schmitt – 3B
    6. Lee – CF
    7. Fitzgerald – RF
    8. Bailey – C
    9. Matos – DH

    Bench: D. Smith, Flores

  11. Fenway made Devers look better than he is. At Oracle, those homers turn into doubles. Boston has proven no one is bigger than the team
we moved on from Garciaparra and won it all. Devers won’t be any different
