  1. Absolutely. People keep blaming fan support for the Whalers leaving Hartford. There’s a reason why fans were reluctant to go to games in the last couple of years… just like Sacramento the fans don’t want to get attached to something and have it leave. Peter Karamanos had no intentions to stay in CT. He was going through the motions so he could say he tried and the fans saw right through it.

  2. Yeah it's Oakland's fault the A's blew it in Fremont. There are plenty of places in the East Bay where they could have built a successful ballpark but it's the team that blew it on the entire east bay.

  3. This is exactly right … I grew up in Sacramento and went over to A's games with my family all the time as a kid … then as an adult, even taking my own daughter to her first game at the Coliseum. This is a loss for the whole region … including 916 area code. But the root of this loss tracks back to the city of Oakland. If Oakland had wanted professional sports, they could have done much more to retain their three legendary teams, including the A's.

  4. Life long Oakland A’s fan from the southern San Joaquin Valley. I even worked for the Visalia Oaks during the moneyball years. I drove Nick Swisher and Jeremy Brown to player appearances around town. There were a lot of Oakland fans here who would make the trip up to Oakland. The tickets were affordable and the experience was not like any other in baseball. Oakland fans are special. I miss going to the games and hanging out with the long time fans.

  5. It's not all on the As owner. The city of Oakland failed us all. How many fans didn't go to games because of the high probability you would be robbed, assaulted, or the very least your vehicle broken into? Don't get me started on the upgrades that should have been made to the Coliseum a decade ago.

Fisher tanked but the city of Oakland didn't help.

  6. The Raiders were able to return to Oakland because there were two motivated movers and shakers involved: Al Davis and Mayor Elihu Harris. Harris convinced the city council and Alameda residents that they would pay nothing in the end for the Raiders return to Oakland. That turned out not to be true and the city council and local residents soured on anymore support for sports teams.

  7. The entire 209 (Modesto, Stockton, Merced, etc.) was firmly A's country until the mid 90s. Decades of lackluster investment in the A's while the Giants got a new stadium and actually went after high profile free agents (Barry Bonds) eroded fan support of the A's.

I remember going to Old Navy stores in Manteca and Turlock (owned by Fisher) within the last 15 years with shelves full of Giants gear, but A's gear in his own stores was virtually non-existent. In the end, us fans mirrored the support shown to the A's and Oakland by Fisher & Co. #FJF
