He’s not a cheat. That’s the problem. He’s playing by the rules.
It is a common problem for fans of sports teams to be emotionally invested in the outcome of games and the performance of the team, even though they have zero say/impact on the team. Heck, it’s hard for most to realize that a sports team’s primary purpose is to generate a positive profit margin for its investors/owners. Winning may help in that goal, but in our case it’s not necessary to achieve the desired margin and competitiveness is not a goal at all.
At the end of the day, as much as we all love the team, the Pirates are Bob Nutting’s business/investment to run as he sees fit. He is obviously quite satisfied with his margin, or he’d do things differently. The fact that he’s not should tell you something.
I’ll keep watching them, but I know they’re going to always suck. I watch to laugh when they screw up, my grandfather and I used to watch them when I was little and we would always laugh when they’d screw up. Helps me bring back those memories. I celebrate their wins when they do, but overall, I know they’ll suck. It’s what the owner wants and I’m ok with that.
People keep paying for his terrible product. Stop.

Every one understands that wealthy CEOs only goals are make as much off of the consumer as possible for the lowest possible expense and lowest Financially feasible quality of the good or service.
When you add in the emotion of sports, all that understanding flies out the window. It’s amazing.
So many comments implying that Bob is just being a good business man, but he really is not. He’s actively destroying the value of his own business over the long term by never fielding a competitive team.
Not a scam. Not a cheat. Just an absolute piece of shit human. I hope all the bad things in life happens to him and only him.
