I will die on this hill. We should keep Dominic Smith these off-season

  1. One hundred percent. The issue really is we have to many 1st base players with Eldridge likely coming up, and Devers saying he doesn’t want to just DH. If Devers would just DH Smith could absolutely stay in a similar role to what hes actually doing now, but otherwise I hope he gets a spot on another team where he’ll actually get some playing time and money, because he fking deserves it

  2. Great player. But he deserves better. I’d only want him to stay if we make tangible strides of improvement this offseason

  3. Totally agree that it’s great to have a solid bat off the bench. Plus, as much as Eldridge is mashing right now in AAA, us Giants fans know that far from guarantees big league success.

Having Devers + Eldridge + Smith + Flores on a big league roster would be way redundant, though. I’m afraid Wilmer’s Giant career is coming to a close…

  4. He’s a pro. Seems like a great teammate. I do hope they keep him.
Along those lines, my hope is they give Wilmer a job in the organization. I see him as a minor league coach or maybe involved in Latin American scouting.

  5. As a bench bat? Sure. But as much as he’s been solid for us, the upside of him as an every day first baseman just isn’t there. I’d 1000% rather have him off the bench than Flores though

  6. How many first basemen and DHs do we think a team needs at any given time? Like 6, maybe?

  7. I like the guy, and maybe it would make sense depending on what other (more pressing) moves Buster makes. But I think a potential Dom Smith reunion only happens once they figure out if they can add at least one potent (likely outfield) bat, at least one reliable starting pitcher, and at least one quality high-leverage reliever.

Depending on whether they make a huge splash (like Kyle Tucker or a big trade) or settle for a handful of modest moves, there may or may not be room for another left-handed 1B/DH-only bat with limited upside. And even if there’s room for Smith when the offseason dust starts to settle, one could argue that the Giants should be aiming for a younger, faster, more versatile and athletic bench despite how solid Smith has been for much of his Giants tenure.

  8. With Wilmer gone I’m more comfortable bringing him back, I just think I rather have Devers at 1st until Eldridge is up and Encarnacion at DH. Or even trying to bring Goldy on board. We need power from a 1st base bat not a league average starter

  9. One thousand percent. He was a great pickup and he seems to love playing in SF. Keep him around.

  10. Dominic Smith has been a solid hitter for us. But I don’t expect him to be a solid hitter moving forward.

This season is his first year since 2020 with above average production, and it’s coming in part because of a BABIP 40 points higher than League average, and 30 points higher than his career average. His xwOBA is below average. He doesn’t hit the ball hard. He chases a lot and doesn’t draw walks.

Frankly, his production looks pretty damn flukey.

  11. An okay but not great hitter with limited power who is only an option at 1B shouldn’t be part of the plan moving forward. He’s the sort of guy who gets signed by someone who needs a lefty off the bench or has their regular first baseman go down to injury.

Smith is a pro, but extremely replaceable.

  12. I think he’s an underrated player. Yes, keep him for sure. Wonder if he could play left field?

  13. Depends on whether they’re going to build this roster with more of an “all-in” or a “runway” approach. There might be more long-term value in letting Luciano or Encarnacion try to take over that RHH pinch-hitting role that Wilmer will be vacating this offseason

  14. They’re is no way he’s leaving this off season. Aside from a clutch baseball player He’s also very intelligent, best baseball interviews in the game.

  15. You will die on the hill that we need to keep a 30 year old with a .307 xwOBA and career 97 wRC+, who can’t hit lefties, does nothing on the bases, and plays the least important defensive position?

  16. It is amazing to me how many comments in this thread forget that Dom Smith himself has a choice in all of this. With what he’s shown this year another club will be willing to give him a platoon or starting spot. They won’t bury him on the bench as a 3rd string 1st baseman like suggested here.

There’s no way the man signs back with the Giants for the sake of his own career. He will have better opportunities elsewhere and he will pursue them.
