In Newcastle England someone was wearing a Giants 31 jersey. I was excited to see it and i’m reading the name says Akahoshi. I thought I was in a parallel universe, same colors, didnt recognize the name but how would someone across the pond know this player that I cant for the life of me recall? I google it… and thats how I learned we are not just the only professional Giants baseball team with these colors. There it is… Akahoshi; pitcher of the Tokyo Giants.

  1. Lefty O’Doul named them the Giants back in 1935 after he became manager saying they needed a more marketable name.

O’Doul himself had played on the then NY Giants which is why the team took that moniker and has copied the coloring and style of the Giants

  2. Yeah, Jon Miller wears a Yomiuri Giants cap sometimes. 🙂

But there’s bad news: the Yomiuri Giants are generally seen as the Yankees of the NPB. 😅 Their main rival is the Hanshin Tigers.

  3. I’m psyched you learned this today! but it’s also funny. Because they have been around for like 75+ years lol.

Look up Sadaharu Oh. Has the most home runs in professional baseball at 868!

  4. You should go check it out someday. I went last year for their season opener and it’s a whole different atmosphere over there. I enjoyed it.

  5. Yomiuri Giants gear is a common sight at both SF Giants games and around SF in general, so many of us are attached to that team for this reason. I got myself a hat and a Shinnosuke Abe jersey when I was in Japan last year. look him up! he reminds me a lot of Buster Posey based on his history with the team (I have his #83 manager jersey, but I would love his #10 player jersey. if anyone reading this has any leads on his #10 jersey pls hmu!)

  6. Annoyingly I used to live in Osaka, Japan and supported the Hanshin Tigers. Kind of like the underdog loser team of Japanese baseball, maybe like the Cubs are in MLB. That means you loathe the Tokyo Giants who are basically the Dodgers or Yankees equivalent.

After moving to the US (San Francisco) and falling in love with the Giants here, it caused problems with my feelings toward Tokyo Giants that I’ve still not fully resolved.

  7. Yomiuri Giants! My husband had a gameboy advance straight from Japan with the Yomiuri logo all around the casing and when they stole my car they took it along with an autographed Brandon Crawford baseball card :’(

  8. Yeah, I have a Yomiuri Giants hat. I have a bunch of baseball sicko friends, but just assumed the the Yomiuri Giants were common knowledge amongst the fan base.

  9. They’re pretty much the Yankees of Japan in terms of branding/notoriety I think.

  10. I have an Adelaide Giants #24 jersey with “Mays” on the back that a pal from Canberra sent me a few years back. The Giants name is in the same typeface as ours. But their colors are red and blue 😞 Oh well, it fits my hometown Guardians I guess

  11. There is also “Gigantes del Cibao” (Cibao Giants) in the Dominican Republic. They don’t wear the same colors but, they’re however still Giants

  12. Went to their game at the Tokyo Dome against their arch rival the Hanshin Tigers and the crowd was wild (in the most polite Japanese sort of way). Great atmosphere.

  13. And the New York Giants and the baseball giants are related and have a get together

  14. I’ve seen the Tokyo Giants play live twice, both times I’ve traveled to JP. VERY fun to watch and very different than US ⚾

  15. Yeah they’re often called the Yankees of the East because of how dominant they are. Japan has bled Orange and Black far longer than that horrendous Dodger blue.

  16. Yeah I saw one of their games at the Tokyo Dome and I bought a hat. I highly recommend anyone to go to a game in Japan but especially Tokyo Dome. The Japanese don’t play around when it comes to their baseball teams. They have fan club sections for home and away team, with a full pep band and chants for every player. Also the food was DELICIOUS and cheap. Way more fun than going to Oracle and listening to Chad and Brad in the row behind me yap about their tech start up for two hours 😩
