He's been insane with a 1.04 ERA in 57 IP. Hasn't allowed a hit as of this post since July 23rd. I know Skubal and Crochet are the favorites right now, but for a relief pitcher this is impressive enough to at least be in the conversation.

  1. Candidate? Yeah for sure, but he’s not winning it. He should finish top 5 if that happens, maybe even 3rd

  2. If he keeps it up with not allowing any hits or runs to end the season. He should be considered maybe he can win it if he gets it to a 1 or below.

  3. He is certainly going to get votes, but if Zack Britton couldn’t win in 2016, Chapman has no chance of winning it.

  4. Sure but he ain’t winning it. Zack Britton’s 2016 season is still the modern gold standard.

  5. Just as a comparison Eric Gagne was the last non-starter to win the Cy Young – Also the ONLY RP since 1992

In 2003 he had a 1.20 season ERA, a .692 WHIP, 137 Ks, and 55 saves (with 0 blown, part of his 84 consecutive streak that spanned from August 2002 into July 2004)

Chapman’s ERA and WHIP are actually a bit better but he’s FAR behind in IP, Ks, and total saves – PLUS he isn’t riding a historic streak of any kind to bolster his story

He’s having a great year and he’ll get votes, could easily finish top 5. He comes nowhere close to winning the award.

  6. Like others have said he’d be a candidate for sure but not win. If the field of SPs was weak then in some scenarios I could see such a reliever winning Cy Young, but unfortunately that is just not the case. There are a lot of great pitchers in the AL

  7. Naw he’s incredible but the other 2 you mentioned deserve it more, not to mention a lot of other dudes. Cy Young isn’t really a reliever reward anyways

  8. He’s not winning but without a doubt he will get some votes. If Chris Martin got some a few seasons ago he most certainly will.

  9. I haven’t been paying enough attention but he’s easily the best AL reliever, right?

  10. Doesn’t matter what he does, too many better starting pitchers.

He can finish top 5, but no way he wins it.

  11. Not a single chance in hell. Mo Rivera didn’t even win despite being one of the best closers in history.

  12. Yes, he’d be a candidate. But I believe he wouldn’t be the winner. He’s probably not even the best pitcher on his team this season.

  13. If there wasn’t a legit starting pitcher candidate then a closer can be a candidate
