Should Casey Schmitt be our 2nd baseman going forward?

  1. WAR of Giants 2B this season:

    Christian Koss = 1.2
    Tyler Fitzgerald = 1.0
    Casey Schmitt = 0.8

    It’s a closer race than you’d think.

  2. He’s kind of the definition of a mid player. His savant page is basically average in baserunning, fielding, and hitting, he has .8 rwar and .7 fwar in 71 games. He’s definitely not good enough to not chase an improvement at second base, but if he stays there it’s fine I guess. He has much more value as a bench utility piece in my opinion.

  3. If the Giants are able to upgrade, they’d be foolish not to. Still, he’s not a bad fall back to enter into ’26.

  4. Hell no. Mediocre isn’t good enough if you want to start competing with the Dodgers.

  5. He should be a platoon player because he’s decent enough as a backup or injury replacement but definitely isn’t a starter yet. I have always rooted for him though so I wish the best

  6. Think he at least deserves a shot. Weird to see how many people believe that he’s already hit his ceiling when he’s only 26 and we just watched him take a big step forward this season.

  7. Tough question

For the rest of season, for sure

I saw him in person twice at Citi Field four weeks ago, and his at-bat quality was shockingly great: hammered fastballs, sat-on-and-hammered off speed stuff

If he carries his August play through September, we could do a lot worse than slotting him in at 2B next season

But Chapman will be 32 on opening day, Willy 30, Raffy 29

If we upgrade at 2B (FA pickings low key pretty slim — is Gleyber Torres an upgrade? — ck out the numbers: Torres OPS+ only 112 / Schmitt 106), Casey’s still gonna get plenty of ABs as the super utility guy for an aging infield

My gut says we keep him at 2B and work harder to solve the RF / bullpen / back end of rotation problems

But if, hopefully via trade, we did upgrade at 2B, Schmitt a really valuable chess piece next year

  8. Ideally he’s the first off the bench mega utility infielder but there’ll probably be worst starting second basemen for next years Opening Day

  9. Great arm, glove and defense. I’d rather build pitching and D. And he can plug and play any infield position.

  10. We’re not going to have all stars at every position. Casey can be a solid defensive player with a slightly above average bat for the next few years, and might even continue developing. Unless we get a sure shot at an all star without giving up capital (Eldridge), I say keep him around

  11. For 2026, yes. Pitching, pitching, and more pitching this offseason, please. No more Verlander signings though, gotta play it smart.

  12. Simple answer yes. He’s a solid option. Go get a pitcher, some bullpen help and an everyday right fielder

  13. I think he earned an everyday opportunity. He started slow, but has improved immensely from 2024 to 25. The dude hits hard.

  14. Absolutely! As long as we want to stay in the bad-to-mediocre range.

Last season / offseason, we were ready to anoint Fitz as the greatest giant. Look how he’s done this year.

This sub would bring back Yaz on a 10 year deal. Just for the feels. Slater too.

Maybe Belt or Crawford are waiting for us to call?
Koss should be a starter next year right?
Dom Smith – no WAY could we upgrade on him right?

    This sub is crazy man

  15. I think he should go into next season with the opportunity as the clear expectation to be the full time 2B, unless they are able to obtain a clear upgrade who still has team control. RF should be the priority.

  16. He gets a shot at the very least, but I know I felt the same way about Fitzgerald coming into this season and look how that turned out.

  17. If you think he’s the problem for this season, you’re on something. His expected numbers are pretty good, just needs to be given a full run without injuries getting in the way.

I’d feel comfortable saying he will develop into a .270 avg 20 homer guy.

  18. The projected free agent class for 2B this off-season is very weak. The only starters in the bunch are Luis Arraez or Gleyber Torres, and neither of those guys represent a clear upgrade over Schmitt IMO. After that, you’re looking at players like Isiah K-F and Adam Frazier, who are not going to be starting regularly on a good MLB team.

  19. These questions are always weird to me. If he’s good enough, yes. If he’s not, then no. He’s played well since August, he’ll obviously see out the rest of the season. If he ends it playing as good as he has been, then he’ll go into 2026 with the job most likely. If he slumps for all of September, then Posey probably looks to upgrade.

  20. Until he proves otherwise, he’s earned it for now. I Brigit the same thing about Fitz last year tho as well.
Casey brings a bit more of a true hitter feel than Fitz…
    I like him there…

  21. There’s way bigger areas of focus I’d point to at the moment. If an elite one ends up in your lap you probably go for it, but it’s not where I would focus my efforts.
