Texas Rangers vs Oakland Athletics – Aug 29, 2025 | Full Gameplay MLB The Show 25
and welcome into the ballpark. Happy to have you with us. An AL West matchup on the show. It’s the Texas Rangers taking on the Athletics. And we’ll be back with the first pitch right after this. And now, please welcome your athletics. [Applause] Just about set to go now. And on the mound in this one, Oswaldo Beo. But Chris, he hasn’t exactly been stellar here on his home mound. Well, I’ll say this. Every player wants to perform well at their home ballpark, in front of their fans, in front of the city. And you know, this guy no different. He wants to be more effective here. So, you know, you look at the numbers, they haven’t been great at home. I’m sure he wants to turn that around and we’ll see if he’s able to start that in this one. Wyatt Langford, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. First pitch, 707. Swing and a miss as he was out front that time. Next offering is in for a strike. Just a really nice slider down and in there. He wants to get the hitter thinking fast ball. Speed him up and just subtract some velocity and add a little movement. Not the best swing that time from the first round pick. No throw. And they come away without a doubt. Batting second, first base, Ezekiel. I feel like that’s one of those rules in baseball that’s tough to explain the logic behind if you’re talking to a new fan or someone trying to learn the game. It’s like, wait, what? The batter struck out, but he still gets to be on first base. Yeah, I hear you. It’s a weird one. Plus, the pitcher gets credit for the strikeout. It’s an over for the batter, but of course, no out is actually recorded. Kind of one of those just trust me, let’s move on situations. Ezekiel Durant stands in here, takes ball one low. If it were an average catcher behind the plate, I’d say take second base, but this isn’t a catcher you want to run on. His quick release is unreal. And a strike in there. This is one of those situations defensively where you can’t try to do too much. You got to make sure that you feel the ball cleanly and get one out first. It’s going to be tough to get two with this kind of speed in the batters box. Next offering upstairs. That’s a ball. Two balls, one strike. That clips the corner. Well, it looks like he’s wanting to work the upper part of the strike zone. What does that mean? Top hand better be working for the hitters. Adjust that side a little bit. Give yourself a chance to hit. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming and downstairs. [Music] And ball four to a board. third short stop. First and second, no outs. Here’s Cory Seager [Applause] and fires in a fast ball at 95. left hand batter waits. Probably the best one we have seen. Throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. And now one and two. Way to lay off that pitch down. The shorts stop takes the ball. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] down the line. It’s a base hit heading for the plate. He will score and the Rangers take the lead. runner stops at third and they’re at the corners with nobody out. A perfect example right there, that plate discipline, it pays off. The deeper he gets into account, the more comfortable he becomes and he usually wins the battle. So runners at the corners, nobody out. Adoleis Garcia stepping in for the Rangers. [Applause] That’s off the inside corner. One and0. At this point, the clean inning is over. Got to settle in, focus on the hitter, and get out of it with minimal damage [Applause] to third. Stops it on a slide. The feed for one on the first, but he beats it and a run scores. Batting fifth, third baseman Josh Young. Here’s Josh Young taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. In for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. Swing at a ball popped up. Sodrom coming on. He’s got it. And there are two outs. And now we take a look at the Rangers lineup. Not a team that usually sees a lot of pitches or works a ton of walks. Chris, they take a more aggressive approach than some of the other teams in the league. They definitely have a few free swingers in this lineup. Hitters who want to be on the attack, and that’s great as long as you got pitches in the zone. If the pitcher is able to expand the zone, can be very difficult for an offense like this to get going. You’ve got to somehow draw some walks, put some runners on base so that when you do have those free swingers come up, you can cash in with some runs that are plated. Looks like he’s just sizing him up there. Really good pitch to hit, but he took it all the way. Sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game. That may be a pitch that he turns on. That one misses and the count is one and one. Two outs. It’s softly on the ground left side and it goes just foul. [Applause] Swing and a miss. Slider got him for strike three. So, it’s two runs on one hit, no errors, and one man left. Bottom half of inning number one coming up. It’s the Rangers two and the Athletics coming to bat. Back here with my pal Singi and on the hill, the lefty Patrick Corbin. And Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. Well, no doubt about it. He’s going to have to put together some consistently good performances in order to bring that erra down. Now, he’s got good stuff. He’s just got to be able to have confidence, trust it, and really go after hitters, not nibble, trust that his stuff, can have late life, and miss barrels of bats. Now, it’s the rookie first baseman, Nick Curts. That is upstairs for ball one. Well, after scoring runs, this is where you’re looking for that shut down inning. Get that hot team back in there to swing the bats. That one is absolutely belted. Garcia ranging back on it. Way back out of here. That’ll fire up the dugout. His second homer of this series. And they’re on the scoreboard. It’s 2-1. That gives this offense something to celebrate for the first time in this one. [Applause] Anytime you have a pitch down the middle of the plate, the percentages go up for the hitter to do damage, even if it’s a pretty good sinker like that one. Nice piece of hitting there at the plate. [Applause] Shay Langalers up next for the A’s. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Langaliers measures 6 feet even 205 lbs and he was a third round pick back in 2019. Next pitch is outside. The real threats are coming up. Already giving up a home run in this inning. He’s going to really have to bear down. [Applause] Got the back going too soon at strike two. One and two [Music] on the inside corner for called strike three. Felt definitely a borderline pitch right there. And he didn’t look too convinced as he headed back to the dugout. No, those are tough ones to let go as a hitter, but with a human umpire calling balls and strikes, it’s always going to be on you to protect yourself with two strikes. Brent Rooker will hit next. [Applause] And first offering is fouled off. One out. Base is empty. [Applause] Next one misses. And it’s a ball and a strike. [Applause] drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck. The one hops off the wall. Should be extra bases. He’s in at second with a one out double. Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there. That pretty much split the zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Tyler Soderstrom. Really strong hitting performance recently, hitting better than 350 this month. That’s outside. And that is ball one. [Applause] That one fouled off. Runner at second here. One gone. [Applause] 2-1. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] There’s his swing and a miss. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. Strike him out of the front door breaking ball. Well, even if you don’t feel great about it, you got to swing the bat with two strikes in this situation. You’ve got the tying run out there in scoring position. Just put the ball in play. Maybe something good will happen. It just didn’t look like he understood the situation. Jacob Wilson the next to hit takes outside [Applause] the one to the left side but it is well fouled. Runner at second. Two down. [Applause] This one in the dirt. Two balls, one strike. Ripped to third, but handled. And that’ll end the inning. A’s draw closer on this homer. And this is now a 2-1 ball game. Back after this on the show. And we’re back. Top of the second now. Here’s the Rangers. DH Kyle Hagashi. Beo back to work. Check. Swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. No ball, one strike and a foul ball. Fouls that off to the left and will do it again. And that one hit to first. It’s in and out of his glove. And they get him. The misplay made it a bit messy, but they clean things up for the out. Jonah. And now the switch in catcher. Jonah. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. And ball, one of our favorites, Jerry Hillsdale umpiring behind home plate in this one. Pretty much by the book with his strike zone. And because he’s so by the book, you’ll sometimes see pitchers questioning him. They’ll make a good pitch on the edge of the zone, want the strike, and not get the call. But most of the time, Jerry gets it right. He’s a good one. He steps on the bag. Two up, two down in the top of the second. Two out, space is empty. Michael Helman now at the plate. First pitch misses. Two outs. Base is empty. Check swing. called strike. [Applause] And that one a little bit high and it’s fouled away. in the air right side on the move towards the line. Got it. Covered plenty of distance there. And that is that welcome back to the ballpark. Here’s the rookie right fielder number 32 Kobe Thomas and the first pitch misses for ball one 10 [Applause] swing and a liner foul off to the Foul ball there. You got it. And that skips in the dirt. [Applause] That misses the zone and the count’s full. tried to back door him with that slider right there, but just missed off the plate. Good pitch though. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. Well, a breaking ball in that 3-2 count. Kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. Lawrence Butler up next for the A’s. This has been a career year for him when it comes to driving in runs. And he dodges that fast ball. Straighten him up a little bit. Tying run is at first. Bottom half of inning number two. Snap throw to first and he’s back in on a dive. [Music] [Applause] Not close with that one. And now two and 0. Chris with that distraction and a speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. [Applause] [Music] The kick and the pitch. Runner goes highfly ball out to left field and out number one on the grab. Betting eight designated hitter Daryl Hern. Now the A’s designated hitter Daryl Hernese. That’s a strike. And one [Music] runner takes off. Strike in there. Throw to second. Great jump. And that is a stolen base. It wasn’t even close. One out and a runner at second. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. Man at second inside. Almost got him. Ground ball left side zips it to first and there’s two away. Batting ninth, second baseman, Zack Gellof. So, two down now and here is Zack Gellof. Let’s go. Baby, let’s go. [Applause] Swinging a foul straight back. [Applause] And there’s a ball. Ball 21. Next pitch is outside. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. So now two on and two outs. Now batting the first baseman, Nick Curts. So digging in, Nick Curts. He’s already homerred here in this one. [Applause] First pitch swinging. Oh, strike one is so critical in a bat like this with a real threat at the plate looking to do damage. clips the outside corner with two now. That pitch started in and ended up on the outside edge just changing planes and very difficult. A that’s strike three and the third out. So we take a break. He’s in a tough spot. Had to make a great pitch. Did it. Got the strike out. Gets out of the jam. Clearly he’s happy with those results. New inning getting started. And now it’s the Rangers leadoff hitter Wyatt Langford. [Music] Swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. and one out to center. Butler settles under it. Makes the grab. One down. [Applause] Now batting the first base. So next for Texas, Ezekiel Durant. He walked and came around to score his first time up. Ball one, no strikes. Trying to bunt his way on. Can’t pick it up with the bare hand. Well, Singy, that was really nice looking. Able to get it down and in a good spot. And he makes it look easy. Bat angle was perfect. Barrel stayed above the hands. Could almost walk to first. Here comes Cory Seager. Singled and drove in a run his first time through. Runner takes off and a foul ball. Man at first. One away. [Music] Right back to the mound. Could be an easy two. One at second over to first. That’s two. Nicely done. 163. And that will end the inning. No runs, one hit, no errors, and no one left. We move on to the bottom of inning number three. It’s the Rangers two and the A’s won. Set for the bottom of the third. And now here’s the A’s catcher, Shay Langers. Langelers. and he pumps in a strike. He must have been looking for something else because he gave up on that pitch a little early. It was right down Main Street. Probably not going to see a better pitch to hit in this at bat. Swing and a highf fly ball left field. Langford makes the grab. Going up, one down. Good pitch. He just kind of had him out in front on that pitch away and wasn’t able to stay close. Brent up next for the ace. Doubled his first time. And that’s through there for a strike. And it’s 0 and one, baby. Right through there for a strike. Quickly into an 02 count. Both pitches were down in the zone. And I think you set your sights a little bit higher cuz you’ll have a tendency to chase if you look down in that area. Well, he made pretty quick work of him right there. You look at the sequence, everything down at the knees and below. And some guys are good low ball hitters, but right there they clearly had a plan to pound that part of the zone and he wasn’t able to put up much of a fight. Tyler Soderstrom up next for the A’s. And that’s off. That’s the inside edge. That’s ball one way high. The guy at the plate could recognize Slider out of the hand. Didn’t stay in the tunnel very long in terms of depth and perception. He knew right away it was an off speed pitch. That misses. Three balls, no strikes. That’s a pitch early in this game. He needs called for a strike. Struggling with command issues. He’s got to get a little help from the umpire. That’s ball four. Tried another fast ball, but missed the spot. Just came apart right there. Four pitch walk and guy to play. It was not going to help him out by swinging it something out of his own. Man at first. Jacob Wilson the next to hit. check swing and he went strike one. Oh, one [Applause] two outs. And now it’s even up. That’s the ball. One and one. The one-1 is fouled off. Sodstrom the runner at first with two gone. That one down the line. Whips it across and the inning is over. The A’s strand one. They’re down. Two to one. And we’re back. John Chi with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Adoleis Garcia. Let’s go. Bring him home. Just missed. That was a good pitch there. Really had some run and finished. Little up and in just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it. He had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Pulls it in on the run and a quick out number one. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Langelers puts it away and a couple of quick outs. Now batting second baseman Cody Freeman. Two down, base is empty. Cody Freeman getting ready to hit. He struck out swinging at his first at misses inside. Ball one. Freeman 24 years old and he was drafted in the fourth round back in 2019. And that’s in the dirt. That one misses in the dirt. There’s a strike too high. It’s ball four. Protect your base. Well, two out walks are never good, especially when you’re trying to get back into that dugout. But he’s still in a good spot. He’s just got to refocus and deal with the bottom of this order. So, a man aboard next to hit Kyle Higashioa. He’s a catcher by trade, but the DH here in this one. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. One out. Swings through that one. One and one. [Music] Here goes the runner. Pitch misses inside. It’s safe. It’s a stolen base. Well, with that kind of elite arm he has behind the plate. Man, it’s a pretty big deal when you can swipe a bag against this dude. Maybe more than anything, it prevents teams from just testing him thinking that they can even steal a base. But right here, they successfully move that runner up to scoring position. Good job. Man on second, two down. Two. Two balls, two strikes. Swing at a highf fly ball. That’s out to center. Makes the catch and that’ll do it. One left for Texas, but they still lead it two to one. Bottom four. And now the right fielder number 32, right fielder Kobe Thomas. [Music] First pitch just misses. One ball, no strikes. And another ball. Two. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. Three and O. Three. That’s in for a strike. Nasty pitch. fouled off down the right side and a 3-2. Hard grounder into the outfield for a nine. And they had their first hit since the first inning. Now betting the center fielder Lawrence Butler. Lawrence Butler will hit next. Fly to left his first time. [Applause] Swings through that. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. Usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. [Applause] swings and pulls a foul to the right side with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base trying to stay on the double play right here. [Applause] And the slider just misses. Man, oh man, I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets on the ground at first. Over to Seager and they get him easily at first. It’s a double play. For me, that’s one of the toughest double plays to turn on the infield. The first base has to get inside, create a throwing lane to hit that middle infielder to start the double play and then from there completing it back to first. Really good job all the way around. Daryl Hernese up next for the A’s grounded out his first time that finds the mark on the inside corner. Two down, nobody on. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Brown ball to the right side and that’s just foul. Had a breaking ball misses outside. on the ground to the left. Young tosses the first. That’s the inning. A’s go quickly and quietly there and they trail it here. Two to one. We go to the top of the fifth. Here’s the catcher, Jonah. Beo back to work. That one finds the zone. Strike one. Movement in the bullpen. Joey Estus, the young right-hander up and throwing. Ferguson, the hardthrowing right-hander up as well. Hit in the air right field. He’s there. He’s got it. And there’s one down. So up next, Michael Helman. He’s 0 for one. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Ball. And a strike. Base is empty. One away. And we’re in the top of the fifth. And that is downstairs. Three and one now. And a popup right side. in foul territory. Langelers pulls it down and there’s two batting left fielder Wyatt Langford. So the batting order turns over. Next up for Texas, Wyatt Langford. Bowl for two in this one. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. [Music] And that’s in there for a strike. And now it’s even fought off foul, baby. Let’s go. Out to short, Wilson. and he’ll be safe at first. Stepping in Ezekiel Duran and first offering is fouled off. He might want to steal second in this spot, but he’s dealing with a catcher that has one of the best pop times in the game. He needs to pick his spot very wisely. Let’s go to baby. Let’s go. Swing and a miss. That is strike two. Wow. No fair right there. I mean, that slider didn’t move till the very last moment. Incredibly difficult to pick that up. Just kind of have to tip your cap on that pitch in the dirt. Blocked. Langford leads off first with two down to the inning. Come on. The other way. He dives, but he can’t make the catch. No throw. And they don’t get the out. Now batting shortstop. Cory Seager. Here comes the skipper. And we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Oswaldo Beido won’t go any further tonight. And that’s an excellent job from the reliever in the starting role today. Gave him some length. Back with a new arm after this. Now pitching. They hand the ball over to a new arm. Joey still pretty early in the ball game. So this bullpit has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs. kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him. First and second, two outs. Seager now at the plate. Pulled hard, but it’s a foul ball. [Applause] First and second, two down. That one’s in there and it’s nothing but two and misses inside. Well, he missed badly with that O2 fast ball. Hitter has to understand probably wants to try to put him away with that pitch. So, got to stay ready for it. [Applause] swing and a miss and that is that. So a strong showing here from the A’s bullhead. Last half of the fifth coming up it’s the Rangers two and the A’s one and welcome back to the ballpark. We head to the bottom of the fifth. Here’s the second base, Zack Gella. And the first offering a fast ball for a strike and a breaking ball drops in for a strike. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches. Now in an 02 hole. He’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake. [Applause] Fights it off. He’ll see another on the ground to short. Seager slings it across and the lead off man set down in their half of the pitch. Nick Curts. And here’s the first baseman, Nick Curts. He’s already homerred in this game. S [Applause] swinging a miss at a slider. Oh, and one. [Music] Next pitch miss is inside. And it’s one and one. One. Home team down a run. Last half of inning number five. And a seed into center. That’s a base hit. So a man aboard now with one away. Now that catcher that ball was absolutely ripped. 111 off the bat and I’m pretty sure it started to whistle after it left the bat. I think I heard that too, Boo. And these are the moments we appreciate when we can look at Statcast and just see exactly what the data is. Always so much fun to see what numbers pop up. And here is Shay Langalers [Applause] [Applause] in there at the knees. And now it’s even one and one. And that’s a great take right there. Even though it’s a strike, with the situation, runner on first base, you want to keep the ball off the ground. And you swing at that pitch, most likely you roll into a double play. [Applause] One, two. Now gets a piece and stays alive. [Applause] The one two two. [Applause] Squirts away a little bit and the runner stays where he is. And ball four to avoid. He just hasn’t had great command of his pitches in this one. Definitely more walks than you’d like to see. First and second, one out. Now the third baseman, Brent Rooker, one for two. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. [Applause] First pitch misses. One count. Look for him to be aggressive here. You got some runners on base. An opportunity to catch a mistake and put some runs up on the board. [Applause] Ripped into center. Base hit. Runner around third. He scores. And the A’s tie it up. It’s 22. Well, here we are. Third time through the order. And this is where we see the OPS jump off. Manager might have to go to the bullpen a little bit sooner than he anticipated. Two on, one out. Tyler Soderstrom the next to hit. He is struck out and he is walked and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. [Applause] That one not close. Yeah, the count one and two. Some activity in the bullpen for Texas. Jack Lighter preparing to come on if needed. Armstrong also getting ready. Langeliers on second. Rooker at first. One gone. And now the count is even. They tried to get him to go. Chase the pitch down and away, but he wouldn’t bite. And a swing and a miss. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. Boi just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count up. Two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. Jacob Wilson digs in now. Yeah, that’s outside. [Applause] [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. One and one. [Applause] Yeah. Big swing and a miss. Two outs. Couple of base runners at first and second. [Applause] Next offering way off the plate [Applause] line and that’s a base hit runner around third on his way to the plate. He’ll score easily and it’s an RBI single. 32 they take the lead. Well, there you go. the RBI machine. Another clutch run scoring at back. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. And the Rangers manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make the move. Patrick Corbin done for the night and he’s not going to be happy with himself. New pitcher on the mound in a moment. Taking over on the mound for the Rangers, Jack Lighter. Well, he’s been a bit of a wild card out there in terms of throwing strikes. He’s definitely struggled with three passes this year. So, two down now. It’s the right fielder. The walk and he’s also singled. There’s the strike of the knees. 0 and one. 0 and one. [Applause] Two on, two outs. That one in the dirt. One and one. [Applause] Out towards right center field and it falls. Brown’s third headed for the plate. He’ll score. Couple of singles back to back. You know what they say, he couldn’t have thrown it out there any better than that. And certainly the case that time. Just flared it back behind the second baseman and dropped it in there. So, two on with two away now. A chance for Lawrence Butler. And that one fouled off. [Applause] Two outs and there’s a foul ball. That’s the ball. The A’s looking to add another. [Applause] Got him swinging. Three runs for him here and they move ahead. Five innings complete. It’s the Athletics four and the Rangers two. And we’re back. Top six. And now the right fielder Adoleis Garcia. Texas right fielder Adoleis Garcia. That one fouled off. Let’s go. Joey lays out, but he can’t squeeze it. The throw won’t get there in time, and the defense comes away with nothing. Here’s the third baseman. Josh Young misses the zone and he gets him to chase. It’s 0 and one. [Applause] With the tying run at the plate and we’re in the top half of the sixth. [Applause] Check swing. He went. No balls, two strikes. 0 and two. [Applause] [Applause] Just misses with that one. just missing off the plate there according to the umpire and out there on the mound maybe trying to get an explanation. Can’t say he’s convinced, but it looks like he’s accepted it. [Applause] Pitch misses and it’s two and two. [Applause] Ripped into right center for a base hit. Throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Well, that was an important bat in this game. So, great job there stepping up to the challenge. I don’t know how he’s able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on it. That pitch was inside and he let it get really deep. So, pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good wood on it. Now, Cody Freeman puts a bunt down. Bare hand scoop over to first in the dirt and he picks it and that’s a great play. Great job from the first baseman to get a little dirty on the plate from the catch. Just because it looked easy, that doesn’t mean it was. [Applause] Now it’s the DH Kyle Hagashi. And that’s downstairs and outside. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] clips the corner. Strike one. Line drive and this might be trouble. One runs in. Now the second run is in. It’s 44 and he’s into second base with one away as the go ahead run. Well, he was a little off balance. He got the front foot down but was so great at keeping the hands back and allowed him still to get good wood to this baseball. Big one there as he drives in a couple of runs. And now the catcher comes up to him. Jonah [Applause] swings through that one. 0 and one. You’re both wood strike. [Applause] [Applause] And a strike on the outside edge. Tied at four. Highf fly ball lifted into near right field. Two down. Now batting the center fielder Michael Helman. So the go-ahead run in scoring position. Michael Helman stepping in for the Rangers. [Applause] [Music] And that is out of play. Highf fly ball right field. He’s got it. And that’s the third out. But they’ll pick up a couple runs here. Both coming on this two-run double. All even now at four apiece. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Bottom of the sixth inning. Now the A’s designated hitter, Daryl Hernese. And a foul ball. Way out front for strike two. Bullpen action for the Rangers. Phil Mat, the veteran right-hander, appears to be loosening up. Cologne warming up as well. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. [Music] swing and a miss. Got him to go up the ladder for the K. Boo. As a hitter, there’s a clear line between being aggressive at the plate in a good way, attacking pitches you can drive, and then being overaggressive in a way that plays into the hands of the pitcher. You’ve got to have pitch recognition. And right there, just way too aggressive. And even though some of those pitches might have looked good coming in, you got to track them a little bit longer because not one of those four pitches was actually in the strike zone. Get off in the box again. Takes the strike. Lifted in the air right center field. Garcia heads after it. He makes the grab and they’re two down. The first base, Nick Curts. Back to the top of the lineup, Nick Curts. Up next for the A’s outside with a breaking ball. You can expect this hitter to be looking for something on a TE. He can get up in the air and untie this ball game. Two down, nobody on here in the bottom of the six. Just [Applause] fouls one off. Two and two. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Got him looking and a nice inning of work there as he sets him down. One, two, three. Nothing doing for the offense that time. Seventh inning coming up and we are tied 4-4. We go to the top of the seventh. Here’s the left fieldielder, Wyatt Langford. It’s good speed at the top of the order here. You want to get it on. See if you can get a stolen base. Maybe get around the bases and pick up a run. Check swing and he went. That’s strike one. One ball, one strike. [Music] Fly a ball to right. Has a beat on it. One down. Now batting the first base. Ezekiel Durant stepping in for the Rangers. clips the corner. It’s 0 and one. All tied up here in the top half of inning number seven. Inside one ball, one strike. Softly hit to third and foul ball. Well, you put good velocity in the head of the hitter. He’s got to get it ready early and then change speeds. Keep them off balance. That’s the goal. Two balls, two strikes. Spoils that one. And it remains two and two. gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Well, they gave up on that pitch early and it ended up staying in the zone. I’m sure he’s kicking himself and would like that pitch again. Ran back to the fast and it was effective. That’s tough. You see it well. I mean, that was clearly up and out of the strike zone, but that’s one of the hardest things when you see a pitch out of the hand at eye level. That discipline to remember I can’t hit that pitch. If I can see it really well at eye level, I can’t catch up to that pitch when a pitcher’s got this kind of velocity. Seager the next to hit takes ball one. Two down to fouled off. just missed. You get to this part of the order. Yeah, there’s some pop there, but more likely there are some base hits. So, very important to be patient. Let the pitcher walk you, if you will. That’s a really good take right there. Slider down and in. very difficult to get on the same plane and do anything with. Foul ball back up the middle and a base hit and a go ahead run is on base. So important to get into the fielding position as you deliver that baseball. That is a scary one. Watch your lips. Instep. Sadly Garcia, also known as El Bombi. Ground ball right side. It squirts through and that moves the go-ahead run to score in position with two gone. Back to back singles. Not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play. That’s a team at bat right there. Nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep. Now that sets up a huge at bat in this ball game. Manager out of the dugout now and it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Joey Estus is done and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. Now pitching. So a new pitcher on the mound for the A’s, Justin Sterner. And compared to a lot of other relievers, strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year. So, the defense should be active. Up next for the Rangers, Josh Young one for three. [Applause] Base hit center field around third. He’ll score easily. It’s an RBI single. and they take the lead in the seventh. Went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. You’ll often hear the phrase short to it, long through it. And that’s a great example of it right there. Got the barrel in the hitting zone early, squared it up with the welltimed swing and came away with a beautiful line drive into center field. So next to hit for Texas, Cody Freeman right through there for a strike. [Applause] Garcia the lead runner out at second. Young out of first with two down. The next offering misses and the count is one and one. The A’s bullpen has some movement. Tyler Ferguson appears to be getting loose. Number 49 also throwing. [Applause] Two on, two outs. Swings through that one for strike two. Two. Two balls, two strikes to count with two outs. Two on, two outs. [Applause] That one misses. Three and two. Now, at this point in the game, you cannot issue free passes. He’s going to have to challenge this hitter. Hitter’s got to be ready to swing it. [Applause] On the ground to third. Rooker bounces it to first, but he digs it out and the inning is over. But they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s now a 54 ball game. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the inning. And now here’s the A’s catcher Shay Langers. If you don’t get ahead in the count, you can forget about having any success against him. just missed. You don’t want to get beat by a fast ball in and he spits on that one. And that one fouled off. [Applause] Looking to get the tying run on base and a count one and two. [Applause] swings and miss has struck him out. A big first out here in the seventh via the punch out. Yeah, it just does so much to change the outlook of an important inning like this when you got the leadoff hitter. So critical in setting the table when you got a tight game like this. So a strikeout really puts them on their heels. Brent Rooker will hit next. [Applause] And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. [Applause] One down. Base is empty. Close one. Doesn’t get the car. And it’s a ball and a stride. And that one upstairs. Blind drive. That’s a fair ball inside third and that puts the tying run on base. Showed some really nice patience in that at bat. Worked himself into a good count. fast pretty much middle middle and that’s what you fall asleep dreaming about as a hitter. So, no surprise he put a great swing on it. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Jack Lighter departs and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. Now pitching for Danny Colom on pitch out of the pen here. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves. Late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. One down, runner at first. Tyler Soderstrom up next for the A’s. High in the air out to right. Two away. Well, such a confidence boost for a reliever to come into the ball game and get the first hitter he faces. Just makes everything slow down a little bit and then from there can really settle in. And the batter will be the shorts stop, Jacob Wilson. [Applause] And that’s in there for strike one. Some hitters are just more confident they can track that first pitch out of the hand of the pitcher. They don’t care if they fall behind 01. trying to hold a one-run lead here in the bottom of the seventh. And that’s in there for a strike and quickly nothing at two. The first pitch just a tough pitch at the knees on the outside corner for a strike and then he went in on the next one. So he’s got to move the ball in and out from pitch to pitch up and down and just try to keep these guys looking all over the place and never lock into one area because he just doesn’t have the stuff to beat you that way. Two outs. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow right field and that ends the inning. The A’s strand one. They trail it 54. We’re in the top of the eighth now. Here’s the Rangers DH Kyle Hagio. Sterner back to work right through there for a strike. Next off is in for a strike. Quickly down 02 in the count. I think you got to choke up a little bit. Spread out the feet. You don’t know what the velocity or the location of this next pitch is going to be. Ow. And two now spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another swinging a miss. That one in the dirt. Catcher has it. Fires the first. Got him. One away on the strikeout. Jonah Hind stepping in for the Rangers. 0 for three in this one [Applause] and first offering is fouled off. Base is empty, one away and we’re in the top of the eighth. There’s a strike. Hit in the air. Center field. Butler settles underneath it. Out number two. Now batting the center fielder Michael Helman. Two out. Space is empty. Next up for Texas, Michael Helman. And that’s downed away. Fast ball for a strike at 95. [Applause] baby. Closed but called the ball and a count. Two and one. Cut on and lifted in the air. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And that is that now pitching for pitching change here. Phil M8 hasn’t pitched in the last three days. Now it’s the right fielder for the A’s. Right fielder Kobe Thomas [Applause] that catches the top part of the zone. That’s strike one. Getting a little frustrated with the strike zone. One and one. [Music] [Applause] Next offering is downstairs. Really been able to slow down the game tonight with his at bats and the biggest one he’s had so far. He doesn’t look anxious at all. That one hit to right. Garcia settles under it. drops into the glove. One away. Up next for the A’s Butler. Up next for the A’s Butler. [Applause] That’s off the inside corner. And that’s ball one. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] And another ball. [Applause] [Music] Holding on to a one-run lead here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. [Applause] And fouled off. [Applause] One down, base is empty and that skips into the swings through it and that’s a strike out. [Applause] So now the DH spot, Daryl Hern for three with two ground outs and a strike out. Daryl Hern [Applause] strike one. 0 and one. Next offering is outside. No, no signs of wavering on the mound here in the eighth. He’s looking rock solid so far. That one just misses the outside corner and the count is even. Two and two. swings and misses on the fast ball up in the zone for the strike out. And the A’s are gone in order. Still down a run. It’s five to four. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Number 49 for the 30th time this year. Number 49. Wyatt Langford getting ready to hit. Left fielder Wyatt Langford. [Applause] Swing and a miss. Strike one. Action in the pen down there. Tyler Ferguson appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. [Applause] Started after it, tried to hold up. Now look to first and that’s going to be ruled a swing. and miss. Drop him out and a strike out for the first out here in the night. He’s a little at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strike out. Durant in the box with one away as he takes ball one. One-run game here in the top of the ninth. [Applause] Two balls, no strikes. [Applause] That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. [Applause] [Music] And that’s in the dirt. 3-1. One down. Base is empty. In the air, right side of the infield. Gellof on his way over. Makes the grab and there’s two away. Now batting shorts stop Cory Seager. Two down, base is empty. Up next for the Rangers, Cory Seager [Applause] into the outfield. Base hit. Joey gets on base and keeps it going. Now batting right fielder Adoleis Garcia. Next to bat will be the Texas cleanup hitter Adoleis Garcia pitch in the dirt and it’s one and0 [Applause] going to ground her foul first base die [Applause] that misses and it’s two and one. Two-1. Seager off of first with two away [Applause] now. One fouled off. Two and two. [Applause] stays alive. [Applause] Knocks that one away and will do it again. Oh, he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. He’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit. Try to move it around. create just a little bit of illusion at the end. That’s to third and it stays fair. Throw stops the lead runner at second. Two on and two out. Got to love the resiliency he showed in that at bat. Battling with two strikes. Turned on it nicely. Definitely a little out in front of the pitch, but he didn’t hook around it too much and was able to keep it fair down the line. And now it’s going to be Josh Young swinging in a ground ball out to short. Tosses to first that ends the inning as they squander a chance to pick up some insurance. So they strand a pair and 912 scheduled to lead off the bottom of the ninth. It’s the Rangers five and the Athletics four. [Applause] Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Robert Garcia. Well, he’s the guy they hope to turn to out of the pin to lock down wins. So, this game has gone to plan more or less. Let’s see if he can wrap it up here. Well, one game, Zack Gell now at the plate. We got the number nine hole hitter right here looking to do whatever he can to get on base, turn this lineup over so the best hitters in this lineup have a chance to tie up the ball game or maybe even walk it off. And the first pitch misses for ball one. [Applause] Fouled off down the right side. One-run game. Bottom nine and a count one and two. [Applause] And that’s outside. in there. Got him. Looking for the K. That was pretty nasty. Well, that right there is what you want to see out of your closet. Come in and close the door. Cancel any hope that that opponent has in making some type of comeback in the ball game. Tell you what, that helps him settle in and that helps everybody else relax a little bit to get these other two outs. Curts the next to hit takes low for a ball. [Applause] Mo outside back to back breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you, that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So I think the confidence level is raised right here. That one misses and now 3 and0. Shay Langelers in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Trying to close out a one-run lead and the home team trying to pull it out. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Thought the green light might be on right there, but maybe not. If you’re looking to swing in that count, that’s the pitch you want. And that one is lifted in the air. Helman sizing this one up. Squeezes it. Two down. Now batting the catcher. The Athletics down to their last out. Next up for the A’s, Shay Langalers. [Applause] A little up front there as he swings through it. Bennett really sells the change up with that arm action. Hit to right and that ought to do it. And that’ll do it. Ball game. The Rangers hold on to win a tight one as this one ends as a one-run ball game. Another solid outing from him out of the bullpen. He’s up to double digits now with his 10th save of the season. [Applause] What the move?
