Episode 546: What to Make of the Roster Moves
And we’re off. Hi everyone. Welcome to episode 546 of the All Dolphins podcast for Tuesday, August 26, 2025. And you see before you the list of Miami Dolphins roster move as they joined every team around the NFL to get to the 53 player roster limit and to discuss all you reading right now. We’re going to give you you speed readers three seconds to look at it and after that Chris Perkins from the software sun send is back here again to join me tolerate me to break down everything that happened today. Perkins as we as I give people more time to look at the list. How you doing my man? I’m doing good. Hey uh only a few people would understand what I’m about to say but if you took the Evelyn Wood speed reading course you’d be done with this already. A nice reference. How about that? Tell me you’re old without telling me you’re old. Wasn’t she the character in the movie Legally Blonde? Oh, no. That was L. Woods. Sorry. God, I can’t help myself. Yes, I’m a big dork. Okay, so we’ve left it here pretty much all long enough. Hi everyone. Hi. Now you see our our pretty faces. This is where I do this. Yes, there you go. Before we get going, please like, subscribe, share, comment, all that good stuff. Don’t be rude. Don’t need to be rude. I just had to block a couple people on Twitter. Um because they were very rude. And if you’re going to insult me, come up with something more clever than poop tart. I mean, seriously, like I’ve never heard that before. Really? Uh okay. Anywh who, um I don’t know about you, Perk, but my over my overriding thought on these Dolphins moved to 53 was like, “Oh, okay. They got down to 53.” I mean, I was nothing juicy, nothing overly exciting. No, I don’t think that there there was anything juicy. I think that the roster I edge rusher was the biggest decision to me and you know we saw Quinton Bale, Derek McClendon, Grayson Murphy all get the axe at quarterback, Mike Hilton and Kendall Sheffield were probably the two big surprises after you get past that. You’re right. And and really that those weren’t big Well, and Cam Smith still being here. Um I I guess would surprise some. Be nice. Yeah. No, I I guess that would surprise some. But um look uh I like what they’ve done with the team with flipping it from win now to win with youth and draft ease. However, uh while doing that, you did get rid of a lot of 30somes, but you don’t have any depth offensively. At almost no position do you have depth offensively and that’s where you’re paying a price. You know, I love the defensive front seven uh both for starters and for depth. But my question is, is this a playoff caliber roster? I I I’ve got them at nine wins, and the only year this decade that got you in the playoffs was 2022 when the Dolphins made it. How about that? Uh, and you can read uh Chris’s further thoughts on that topic at sunset.com. Check out the man’s work. Um, and check out my work at my Dolphins.com, that of the team as well. We have a lot of stories up there today uh as we you know uh dissected all these roster moves that kept going on. And this is a part where I point out these this is the roster cuts to the initial 53man rosters. The fund continues tomorrow. And this is what’s going to happen on the calendar by noon tomorrow Eastern time. Every player that has been waved this week, Monday or Tuesday, and those are players with less than four years of NFL experience, are subject to waivers. Every team before noon Eastern time on Wednesday will put in claims for any player they would like to pick up on waivers. Now, and then you will get if their only team that claim is a player, they’ll get that player. If multiple teams claim the player, there is a waiver priority order and it’s basically the exact order of the 2025 NFL draft before trades obviously which means the Dolphins had the 13th pick in so to speak in the waiver order which means if one of the 12 teams before them also make a claim on the player the Dolphins claim uh too bad suicide for the Dolphins. Um, after that’s done, then the league will send out a notice of all the players who have been claimed. Then once every team has received that, teams can put together their practice squad of up to 16 players, can be 17 if you have an international exemption like the Dolphins had last year with Dominican tackle. Baron Matoss, who by the way was waved injured uh among the roster cuts. So that out of the way. And then what’s going to happen also Wednesday is the day when teams can put players on IR designated to return beyond the two they were allotted on Tuesday which the Dolphins used on Jason Sanders and Andrew Meyer the offensive lineman who count against the maximum of eight for the season. Then Dolphins have six more moves like that. And it would not surprise me in the lease, particularly since they have not officially signed Rasul Douglas, which is another big story to discuss. Then there’ll be a move made to accommodate him. And the two guys who jump out to me as logical choices would be Ethan Bonner or Jaylen Wright. Any thoughts on any of that? No, I I like the uh Douglas acquisition. We’ll talk about that later, but um yeah, that the you know, Jason Sanders is going to hurt. that’s that’s going to leave a mark. Um because he he’s a guy who basically kicked you into the playoffs in 2022 and 2023, right? The Jets game in 2022 and the and the Cowboys game in 2023. So, uh that’s going to leave a mark. I I I have no idea who can um who can fill the shoes of a man who was recently maligned for missing 50 and 50 yard field goals and more. But but really turned into a I don’t know if a hero is the right term, but a uh savior. Is that better than hero? A a reliable player. A reliable player. Let’s put it that way. The guy’s a stud. The guy’s a Yeah, he can top five, top seven kicker in the NFL. is very very good. And if the Dolphins want to have a kicker for the full four weeks he’s going to be gone, then that’s another roster spot they can occupy. Or they can go the route of what they did with the long snappers last year, which basically signed a kicker to the practice squad, elevate him the maximum three times, say goodbye, thank you very much. Sign another kicker to the practice squad. Kickers are available. I mean, and again, this is the issue of like filling in an emergency situation and then bringing in another guy for for one game until Sanders comes back from IR. Here’s my question, though. Do do you want to do you want to have a first time kicker when you go up to Buffalo on Thursday night in week three? I I would I would think you would want that guy to have been with the team for two games. Um, no, but even for week three, they’re they’re allowed three games. So, they’re But but I mean, you I don’t I I wouldn’t want to have one kicker for Indie and one kicker for New England and one kicker for Buffalo. I would rather have the same guy going into Buffalo just because Perk, you’re not following me. They will they’ll sign a guy and that guy was going to kick the first three weeks, which will be Indie, New England, and Buffalo. I thought you meant switch them out. No, no, no. Well, no. And then when I talking about long snappers, the Dolphins, it was three games and then they couldn’t use them anymore unless they moved him to the to the active roster. So by Thank you very much. Another one, three games. That’s what they did after they put uh Blake Ferguson on the NFI list. And it it won’t be doesn’t have to be a rookie kicker because there are a bunch of veterans out there whether it be Zay Gonzalez, Matt Prader, or Eddie Panero. We already talked about those. So I think that’s the way the Dolphins are going to go. There’s really no need unless unless Jason Sanders is going to be out for half the year or the entire year. I think the difference between kicker for games one through three and the kicker for game four is not significant enough that you need to waste a roster sp roster spot on that position. Yeah. I guess what I was saying is I hope they find somebody who’s worthy of being around for three weeks. I guess correct. Yeah. Yeah. As opposed to switching. Yeah. As Yeah. as opposed to going through multiple kickers. I hope they find somebody who’s good for that three weeks, right, before you have to put him on the roster spot. That’s the better way to say it. Okay. Sorry. Sorry if I No, I think we both misunderstood there. Yeah, each other. We have We have none of this going on right now. Not yet. Not yet. We’ll get it though. We’ll get it. We We’ll work on it. Speaking of kickers, there’s another name who became available today. Actually, two of them. Parker Romo from uh New England was beaten out by Andres Borales from M. I’m not familiar. Park Roma to be honest with you. Dustin Hopkins, a guy I am familiar with, got released by Cleveland, not great last year, kind of bit all over the place. Um, so whoever winds up being, you just hope, you know, they don’t miss a field goal that cost you the game. Um, you mentioned Cam Smith and Kendall Sheffield. The thing with me with Kendall Sheffield is, yeah, he got sidelined late in training camp. That didn’t help him. And the other issue I had with Kendall Sheffield is the deep speed. Uh, and I said this before on the podcast is when you were in Chicago after a practice, he’s telling us he once was clocked at 426 and I flat out was like, “Sure.” And I just That was in the 30. So what? That was in the 30. Yeah. Yeah. because I don’t I didn’t see the the deep speed and in practice whenever he got beat usually was was being able to hang with the with the receivers uh down the field but hey good for Cam Smith and Channing Tindle’s another big name Channing Tindle did not make it this time I thought he had a shot uh although in my final roster projection uh I had him off the team and this is where because I’m all about accountability uh my final roster projections I was six tough. However, uh I had six players on the 53 were not on initial 53 and six who weren’t who are, but five of those involve injury situations that I had on IR and they didn’t go on IR or vice versa, including Dante Trader Jr., Ethan Bonner, Jaylen Wright, Andrew Meyer, and Jason Sanders. So, overall, great job. Okay. No, sorry. There you go. I haven’t I haven’t checked mine yet. So, uh, I will give you I will give you an update, uh, maybe tomorrow if anybody cares by then. No, we should all put on Twitter. I mean, because it’s it’s like easy to throw roster projections out there and then if you’re like, like somebody asked me, do you recall how how well you did in your previous roster projection? I’m like, yeah, I was 53 for 53 every single year. You know, it’s right. Yeah. Yeah. Um, to me, again, going back to the the roster makeup, to me, one of the biggest surprises them keeping six interior defensive linemen, which is a very large number for a team that doesn’t play a 4-3, right? And yeah, I I expect there will be some changes there, right? Okay. Yeah, I that that’s what I think as as the offensive lineman come available, um I I think you probably make a make a change at that position, a one for one. So, you’re thinking Mr. Matthew Butler Ren don’t buy? Could Could be. Could be. He’s He’s probably the number one candidate. As strong as uh he was, he’s probably the number one c over the drafties. Well, you know, Kenneth Grant’s not going anywhere. So, it should be over over Biggers. And Jordan Phillips isn’t going it would really be between him and Zeke Biggers, I guess. Correct. And I think and I don’t know how where the scouting was uh throughout the league. But Zeke Biggers from where from where we stand here, he was good enough that he’s definitely worth keeping around and I think somebody if they were aware of the work he put in the summer would want to claim them. Yep. I think so. Yeah, you would lose them. Yeah, you would lose them definitely if you let them go. So, yeah. I Yeah, I I would I would I mean the offensive line is such a the backup offensive line is such a weakness that you you’ve got to you’ve really got to do the best you can. and you’ve got to go all out to to reinforce that position. I like what they did at at corner with Rasul, who we’ll get to later, but you you did a good job there, Chris Greer, you’ve got to do an equally good job at backup offensive line. So for the record, as it stands right now, the three backup offensive linemen, assuming Austin Jackson starts at right tackle in week one, would be Larry Boram, Keon Smith, and Daniel Brunskill with Andrew Meer starting the season on IR out at least for the first four games. Liam Mikeberg starting the season on reserve pup at out at least the first four games. Yeah. And no guarantees beyond that. But the fact that they designated Andrew Meer suggests that they’re very confident he’ll be back. Iikenberg, who knows? Bradley Chub started on reserve pup last year and never was activated. So, um, so you’re not you you have a very high level of concern with that group of backup offensive linemen. I take it high level. High level. We didn’t see anything in in offseason um, training camp or or the preseason games to give me confidence that any of those guys could step in and and do a credible job. So, uh I think you’ve got a major concern there. Again, I don’t know where I trust as the roster is currently constructed. Uh I guess wide receiver is going to be your best uh your best area of depth uh offensively even though Malik and and Taj are not really proven yet because they’re, you know, they were just drafted last season. Taj missing the season. NWI Nick Westbrook Aine. We we haven’t seen his strength emerge yet, which is using that size, that 6’2 frame, short yardage, red zone, uh, goal line. We we have not seen that emerge yet. So, I I don’t have a whole lot of faith in what I’ve seen from him. Uh, tight end, it’s a nondescript group. It’s a very nondescript group. And then running back, you know, if if Alexander Madison was there, I would feel a lot better about it, but he’s not going to be there this year. If Jaylen Wright was there, I would feel a little bit better about it. But, uh, you know, who knows when when he’s going to be available. Ali Gordon, your rookie sixth round pick, I like him because he provides that power, that element that you don’t have. Jaylen Wright provides you more speed. Madison would have provided you power. I’m about filling in gaps. what you don’t have on the roster. Get it. You got what Jaylen Wright provides. You don’t have what Ali provides, but Ali is unproven. He’s a he’s a rookie sixround pick. Uh nice skill set, but he’s a rookie sixround pick who is going on the road for his first game. So, I I don’t know how much you can really count on him. You really need Han to be at 90 95% for that game, I think. Yeah, quarterback and and quarterback. I I I don’t I don’t really have a whole lot of faith in in Zack Wilson as the number two. I I look I I I thought they should have gotten a a veteran backup quarterback. Um you know, my my coworker, uh David Feronis liked Jimmy Garopppolo. I I I was more of kind of the Andy Dalton, whatever. I mean, but uh you’ve got Zack Wilson, so you got to roll with him. I I need to be convinced. Here’s the big question. Do you feel more better now at this time with Zach Wilson as a number two or at this time last year with Skyler Thompson as the number two? Oh, well, to be honest, I felt better about Skyler Thompson at this time last year than Skyler got out there and I didn’t feel very good about it. uh felt I felt I got duped by this offseason competition between Skyler and Mike White who uh I believe I saw was let go by Buffalo. Um so uh last year was almost a waste of time at the backup quarterback position in the off season and I’m hoping that this year is not the same. I I ju I would have really liked to have seen Skyler develop so that they could have more continuity and uh at that backup position, but now you you’ve got two firstear guys in this system. I’m not sure you’re ahead of where you were last year. I’ve got to be convinced of that. No, that’s fair. But the scholarship had sailed. I mean, I’m going to be honest about it after what happened last year where he was basically demoted in favor of Tyler Hunley who massively is not a fit for this offense. and we just saw got released by Cleveland after he signed to be their fifth quarterback. Yeah. Um so um I I don’t want to make I want to make this point here not to pontificate or to pat myself on the back even though I do like I do like that. It’s a good feeling. It feels good. Yeah. No, I like that. But but this is where I I want to go back to like and I’m I’m on Twitter a lot these days as are you and I always caution when it happens like our view of certain players in the media gets skewed because all we see them going against is against their own players, right? And again this notion that the Dolphins were so insanely deep at edge defender that it was okay. I don’t know. They couldn’t keep everybody, but they could get something in a trade. Maybe a quarterback, maybe be an offensive lineman. And what happened is he’s Grayson Murphy didn’t make the 53 and Dolphins weren’t able to trade him for anything. Same with Derek McClendon. Uh same with Mohamed Chimera. So, if you see flashes of pass rushing potential, that’s that’s really good. I mean, that’s what you want to see. But let I think some people are were just so quick to like make these guys stars when they’re not stars. They’re not established yet. And as it turned out, the Dolphins kept the four established guys who have proven it in a regular season in the regular season with Chub Chop Phillips and Matthew Judan along with Cameron Good who I pegged on the roster all the for a while because of his special teams work. Um the having said that, the Quinton Bell move surprised me because Quinton Bell again is not like a a stud pass rusher, but he’s solid like he’s a lot more dependable against the run than the young guys who flash us past rushers and he played a lot of special teams last year. That’s why I had him on the 53 and he got popped. Okay, let’s move forward now to a couple things. As you mentioned, the tight end position not really flooring you. Maybe it would help if Darren Waller actually was on the field at some point because lo and behold, Mike McDaniel, I asked him again and I preface the question the same way. Mike, it’s another week, so I got to ask another Darren Waller question. And again, I got probably going to do more this week. Well, we go out there for the first 20 minutes of practice. Didn’t see Darren Waller out there. Yeah, I don’t know what to make of this situation. It’s It’s getting more and more bizarre. Uh, before it was interesting, curious, uh, mysterious, now it’s bizarre. I I I just don’t I just don’t get the plan to bring him along. Um, you got to play football. Like, you’re a football player. You need to get out there and play football. And again, we don’t see any um noticeable ailment as far as a limp or a sleeve on his harness on his shoulder, a sleeve on his leg. There’s nothing like that. And he he seems effortless when he’s going through motions with the trainer out there. Um I I obviously there’s something that we haven’t been told here, obviously, but I I just I don’t know what it could be. No, it’s weird. And we’ve never from the first time we talked to Mike McDaniel about Darren Waller, it was it was he needs to get back into football shape, right? Never mention of an injury and all that. And then we see him work out. He looks completely cut fit and he’s like running and there’s doesn’t seem to be anything wrong. So at no point and maybe this is where we drop the ball and the next time we speak to Mike McDaniel, we need to ask more directly, is there some sort of injury that’s limiting Darren Waller? Yeah, that’s not noticeable because we’re not picking it up and I’m in the same boat as you. I guess we never thought for a second that there was something physically wrong with him because it was always about working himself into football shape. Right. Right. Right. And and so yeah, that’s something we can ask uh Chris Greer tomorrow. Definitely. Um but I you know, how long did we see OBJ last year before he was activated? It seems like we saw him out there working for a couple of weeks, didn’t we? And then he was activated and he he looked fine. But I I’d have to It’s so hard to remember year to year. It’s amazing. It really is. It’s not that long ago, but it’s so hard to remember. But it it seemed like we saw OBJ out there working and we and we were wondering, boy, the dude looks great. He’s he’s cut and I I don’t know why he’s not coming back, but I would have to go back and look at at at what we wrote. It seemed like it was a similar vibe as far as we see him out there with the trainer, but it’s still a couple of weeks before he’s actually activated, which is activated now, but correct. And that’s the difference. I mean, the dude’s been activated what in the middle of last week and he never No. Yeah, he was act Yeah. middle of last week and he never practiced. And again, we didn’t see him out there today. And OBJ’s first game was that Buffalo game, right? cuz he opened on Pup. Is that Do I think Yeah, I think Yeah, I think the Buffalo game. That’s the game that stands out. That was his first game. But, uh, yeah, it’s No, Waller is and and and you need help at tight end. That’s the thing like I mean, how many receptions do they have since John New departed? I mean, I don’t I mean, in practice like the like Tanner Connor has had a couple of catches, but there’s they some have been shaky. Some drops. Uh, Frell Brown, who’s who’s now gone. I I mean, how many how many training camp receptions are on this roster right now? Not many at the tight end position. No, correct. It’s Yeah, it’s not a great position. They need Darren Waller to come through. And again, would be nice to know what was going on. There is some good news, however, in terms of injury situations. Kenneth Grant was back at practice on Tuesday. Also saw Ashton Davis walk out. Then Simmons stretching and he walked out onto the field to join his teammates with some very very bright impossible to miss. I think they were lime I’m color blind so I’m not sure maybe lime green uh cleats it was I mean it was like I was a little bit blinded but uh helmet in hand so very very good to see him I know back onto the field um trying to think in terms of the injuries as far as the attendance I don’t think we put eyes on Austin Jackson or H yeah Tyreek was out there working work I guess he was working with a trainer I just saw him go outside I don’t know what Tyreek did actually Um, not sure. Not sure. Well, we saw we saw them come out. They were um for for just to set the stage, offense was indoors, then defense went outdoors. That was pretty much for what we could see for our 20 minute session. Um, and so Tyreek was indoors, but he went at one point he went outdoors with a trainer. I stayed indoors, but I don’t recall seeing Tyreek doing anything with the trainer such as, you know, running and or or you know, running in place or stretching or anything along those lines. Uh, we also should mention I just something just popped into my head and oh, I’m not sure if I want to go there. But, uh, we did not see Cam Smith, not aware, and this kind of led us maybe to thinking, oh, he didn’t make the team, but he’s on the 53. didn’t see him get hurt in the game against Jacksonville unlike Channing Tindle and Eugene Asante who was waved with an injury settlement. And now I just had a thought in my head as wow did they already tell him he’s getting cut tomorrow to make room for Rousul Douglas and our whole thought of somebody going on IR is off base. Uh yeah, could be. I mean I I I I think I mentioned none here. I saw him um after the game in the locker room. uh chatting it up with Iffy Melon Fun W Cam Smith I’m talking about and uh he was in a good mood. There was no apparent injury at all. Um he you know meaning I didn’t see like ice on his knee or other limping or gra you know no harness on his shoulder. So uh he was in he was in really good spirits. Uh he was he was talking trash and and uh smiling and seemed in a great mood. So I I I would be surprised if there was an injury at that point. So you raised a good point. Then yeah, you raised a good point. Maybe we did some premature evaluation here suggesting he made the 53. But he made the initial 53 bet. The initial. That’s right. You as long as you say initial, we can we can now wash our hands over everything. The initial 53. That’s the That’s the disclaimer. Yeah. Little little pop culture. Did you ever see a movie called The Paper way back when with Michael and Glen? I didn’t see it, but I I’m aware of it. Oh, okay. Yeah, that’s right. You don’t watch movies. You just watch. So, it’s actually a good movie where basically kind of the premise is in fact one of the Glen Close comments he plays the editor is as long as it matters. It’s it’s accurate when we printed it. If it’s wrong, we can change it tomorrow. I’m not saying necessarily a great way to operate, but yeah, that’s that’s like saying you can say anything about anybody as long as you put alleged in front of it, right? Yeah. Exactly. The alleged liar, the or with all due respect, and then just uh they haven’t seen it, so it’s an old movie, but it’s I I found it very enjoyable. Anyway, so I’m joking about alleged actually. That’s a that’s a joke. You cannot you cannot say anything about anybody and that’s not a journalism practice. Wish I had a graphic that says humor humor. No, we’re not we’re not being serious here. Uh you like the Russell Douglas pickup. I’m going to say this very quickly though before I let you expound on it. Uh and and I say this about about a lot of different players. I had this again back and forth with Waiver because it’s amazing to me like a player gets gets gets released and seemingly oh Dolphins could use him Dolphins could use him. Duffins could use him. And to me, I tend to ask the question, why was he cut? And the question that can be asked is why was Russell Douglas still available? Is part of it he just didn’t want to do training camp and he waited despite having offers maybe. Uh the reality is and and again this is another former Buffalo Bills player, defensive back no less, who’s coming to join the Dolphins after a down season and certainly hoping it doesn’t turn into another Jordan Por situation. Uh I fel would have felt a lot better about this move last year when he was coming off four straight seasons of four or five picks. Last year he had none. in the passer rating when targeting Russell Douglas last year was 122. None of that is very encouraging. Um, having said all that, I’m going to keep my fingers crossed that it turns out to be a really, really good move. My only thing is I hope Dolphin fans only matter because he’s a big name. Boom. You know, cornerback issues solved. It’s not going to be a really really good move. Uh, but I do give Chris Greer credit for finding Rasul. And and and I say I wrote this that like look, I I give Chris Greer credit for finding quarterbacks. Now, it’s not like he found Rasool Douglas, who was in the division for the last couple of years. And it is worrisome that Xavier Howard got a job before Rasool Douglas, but I go back to what Matthew Judon told us that you find out it’s about the organization that Judon was like, I was ready to sign. Nobody wanted to sign me. And then when the Dolphins were ready to bring me in, they brought me in. I think the Dolphins were looking, maybe Sheffield can do it. Maybe Cam Smith can do it. Maybe Mike Hilton can do it. Ah, damn. Call Russool. Screw it. Call Russool. I think that’s what this is. But look, even with the Jordan Puyer thing last year, you didn’t have a better answer on the roster. How many games did Puyer start? Every game that he was healthy, right? I don’t know if he started all 17 off the top of my head, but he was an answer. He wasn’t a a great answer, but he was an answer. You’re not going to be strong at all 22 starting spots, but you have somebody in Rasul Douglas who is probably a better answer than Jack Jones, a better answer than Cam Smith, better answer than K. Is he though? Is he a better answer than Jack Jones right now? Um, I I think that he will be. I look I you know Jack I I I like what I’ve seen from Jack at the line of scrimmage and and he’s trying to learn something, but I like his aggression and all that, but let’s face it, there’s a reason that this guy has bounced around and and most of it has been off field, but that’s that’s a factor when you’re looking at trying to go 17 games. Um I I don’t Can you trust Jack Jones on and off the field? Can you trust him? You know, you can trust Rasul off the field. Yeah. But let me ask you this question then. Would do you prefer a guy with a massively high ceiling who who will miss assignments or a guy who is very technically sound who generally will not miss assignments, who won’t like have like blown coverages, but also will get beat a lot more than Jack Jones because he doesn’t have the speed anymore. that being Russell Douglas. So, how do how do you balance those two those two factors? Well, um the way I would balance it with this team is I will take some of those some of those errors that Rasool will make because he’s technically technically sound or does that make sense? He’s he’s basically No, no, my point my point is is you’re not going to get a ton of mis assignments from Russul Douglas, but he will get beat physically a lot more than Jack Jones because he’s going to be 30 or 31. By the way, that that’s for some for some reason on a bunch. What What do you have him at? 30 or 31? 30. 30. Okay. Because according to CBS Sports, Fox Sports, and Wikipedia is starting 31. According to NFL.com and Pro Football Reference, he’s turning 30. So 30 and a half. How about this? He’s turning turning 30 and a half. Here, but here’s here’s what I would say. Your front seven and Minka Fitzpatrick can help. They they can they can help. Um, anybody you pick up at this time of year is going to have warts. You know that going in. You know that when you pick them up. And as for your your thing, yeah, I’ll I I’ll I’ll roll the dice because that that’s all I can do. The guy has experience and I’ll take that. I I’ll take my chances with with him over Jack Jones. See, and me, not not having not having seen Rasul even on the field this year, but I’m going off going off the way he looked last year. He’s like again, he’ll be sound. He’ll be where he’ll be where he’s supposed to be, but he’ll get beat by by somebody who’s going to be faster than him. Yes, Jack Jones will stay with wide receivers, but he also can bite on a double move and get caught out of position. I think the upside with Jack Jones is obvious clearly much higher. And I’m not sure that I I’m not willing to live with the occasional big play that you give up for much tighter coverage, say 80% of the time, as opposed to sound sound play. don’t get beat by a bad mistake or bad misstep, but you’re going to give up a lot of completions in front of you. I I’m not sure that the Jack Jones I’m not sure that I wouldn’t exhaust Jack Jones as a possibility because the other part of it is if you’re not willing to live with the mistakes that comes with the upside. Why is he even on the roster? Rasul because Oh, Jack Jones. Oh, Jack. Yeah. Yeah, Jack. Well, and Jack, you know what? And Jack’s off-field stuff kind of kind of concerns me. Um, you know, there are some some uh some some knucklehead tendencies there. Yes. As as far as the the airport incident and he has some tardiness, right? Um, yeah. On on this particular team that’s trying to clean up its act from that standpoint that yeah, that concerns me. So then why have him on that roster at all? Because you’re because you didn’t you weren’t smart enough to draft a quarterback earlier. That’s why. And and you’re you’re in a bad spot now. You that’s that’s why that’s why you had to call Mike Hilton and Jack Jones and Rasul Douglas because look, you you you hit on J Well, you apparently hit on Jason Marshall Jr. We think the fifth round pick. I mean, if you could have got somebody earlier, you could have hit on two guys and you wouldn’t be calling these guys. And see, to me, I’ll go I think my my final word on this might be no guts, no glory. Like, you can play it safe with Rasul Douglas and I think he’ll be fine at quarterback, but I don’t know we that we can expect anything special out of him. With Jack Jones, you’re flipping a coin. It could turn out bad. It could turn out really, really good. And again, if if you we’re not willing to take that chance, then why why are we even bothering with him? Well, I mean, I think you took that type of a chance with OBJ last year. Um you you in a different sense, you took it with KAS and it worked out. Uh you you’re you’re taking that chance with Waller, right? I I don’t know how many of those chances you want to take. Okay, but like I said, I’m going to go back to if you’re not going to take if you’re not willing to play him, then because in terms of talent and ability, to me right now, he’s clearly ahead of Russul Douglas. But anyway, I would say yeah, I would I would agree with that. I would agree with that. Yeah. Um I think that’s going to do it. I think it is. Um I I I let me get out of here. I was say I do I do like the initial 53. I just don’t know if it’s playoff caliber. I like what they did. I like the decisions mostly. I I mean, maybe I would have kept McClendon around, but you know, he didn’t have enough special teams value, but pretty much I like what they did with the with the 53. Yeah, I think it’s solid. I have no I have no major issues with it. I like the fact that they do have a lot of of the young players who could be in for big roles, and that’s again, that’s going to help you down the road. I like the fact, you know, they every single one of their their draft picks looks in line to play, you know, pretty significantly. I think three defensive tackles and be part of a rotation. Ali Gordon’s going to play a big role. Savia starting Ken Grant’s obviously starting. Oh, Dante Trader Jr. is a little bit of a question mark um because of his injury and you obviously not going to play a big role, but he looks like a good developmental quarterback as a seventh round pick. Okay, that’s going to do it. Uh he is Chris Perkins from the South Florida Sunsel. Read his fine work at sunsel.com. Don’t forget to watch his Dolphins deep dive with Perk on Friday at noon. Mr. Poupart don't bring your Twitter problems to YouTube, l😂
Good Evening Phinz Up
I only go on Twitter if I'm in a bad mood and looking to rip the dumbest comments.
There were two guys I wouldn't have cut. Tahj Washington and Grayson Murphy. They cut Grayson. I would have cut Cam Smith. They kept him. Every report about Cam Smith out of camp was negative. He did nothing to show he should be on the roster. So, I have the grade as a D.
Yeah Malik is definitely unproven 😂. Big question mark.
How did Larry make the roster he was terrible give up sack left to right 🤦♂️
Cam Smith made the roster??? YIKES!🤣
McClendon and Murphy definitely played well enough to earn a spot on the 53.
I knew once we got judon we wouldn't keep mcclendon or murphy rooting for murphy to make it to the practice squad
agree with Perk that 9 wins feels about right given the injuries we normally have and the lack of depth at OL, the secondary and the TE mess…front 7 on defense will keep them in games but alot of depth issues elsewhere…
Rasul Douglas is Jordan Poyer 2.0. He will definitely cost us games this year. Dolphins never learn their lesson.
RB Rocket Sanders is available now… led the SEC… SIGN THAT MAN!!! 🚀
you had to call guys at CB because Kadar was lost for the season, Burns, Cam has been questionable at best…and Ramsey did not buy-in to McDaniels program…
Love your commentary. In response to Chris’ concerns with Zach Wilson vs Skylar Thompson, Skylar is 4th on the Steelers depth chart. He was playing against 3rd & 4th stringers and did great. Zach had a solid preseason with 0 turnovers against 1s & 2s. He managed the offense very well. If you look at his wins on the hapless Jets, the teams he beat (many on the road) is nothing to balk at. He’s no where near Tua, but I understand it took time for Tua to get where’s he’s at. I think Zach will do some amazing things if his # is called. Go Fins!!!
Skylar is looking good for the Steelers. Maybe he just wasn't a fit for the McDaniel system 🤔
Dolphins will regret not working something out with Jonnu Smith. Smh
Perk- What round pick is Ollie Gordon?
The plan is to use the rush to cover for the lacking at the CB that is why Fitz is the safety. Think that is why Ramsey left, think they wanted to move him to safety to cover for the weakness at CB.
It seems obvious now that Waller has an off field problem. Which is no surprise given his history
Jimmy G is frail.
🐬🆙🫡
With the texans shopping OT cam robinson Chris G. Should not hang up phone till its done😊😊😊
Go get Prime Time's son Shilo, if they are taking chances 🤔
Awww man, Poup blocking ppl on Twitter
For us ordinary fans, or at least me..the Waller situations feels eerily like the OBJ thing.. and as I typed this, Perk read my mind.
I agree with SteveY… by game 12 or so the defense will be so overworked in 4th quarters, the late season collapse may be inevitable.
Another excellent show, gentlemen.
Kendall Lamm is available. Some decent RBs as well.
15:18 great break down Perk
16:32 😂😂😂😭😭
5-7 wins
Maybe I missed it, but did Nick Westbrook Ikhine play at all this preseason? I don't recall seeing him once.
As the biggest Tua fan in the world I’ll say this, you pay Tua and the 2 WRs that much money in order to play Jack Jones over Rasul. If Jack gets burnt it’s on Tua to get that back on the next drive. More glory is there with Jack over Rasul (right now)
With Waller is there a clause in his contract that says when he practices he has to do a blood test for drugs and maybe they’re protecting him. Waiting until they know he’ll get a negative test.
The Darren Waller situation is the OBJ situation part deux 😮😫
Guys, can you ask Chris Grier why he left the NFL Competition Committee? He was not replaced. Obviously an owner decision, but would love to hear what he has to say. Thanks.
Why would we keep Larry borom, he is horrible…
Great explanation of the strategy for the kicker substitute guys. Those are the nuances about the league that the average fan is not familiar with.
Damien Martinez was released by Seattle. He might be an interesting option as a short yardage RB. He was a beast behind that Canes O line last season.
Douglas turns 31 in 2 days.
Please start over Miami. Please gut this team, GM, coach, and QB go get a GM who can build a team with strength and size. Speed is awesome when it comes with size. I am an OG and would like to see this team in a Superbowl again.
Fins lack leadership, from the owner to the GM to the coach. If you don't practice, you don't play. You think Jimmy Johnson or Don Shula would let players not practice and then play? Just a bizarre coach doing bizarre things.
We love you guys! Our team coverage is awesome too bad you all cover a poor organization. So depressing as a lifetime Fin fan.
Soft reset remember?
Doom and gloom
The offensive line has been weak for years!
