🔴LIVE 🔴 Texas Rangers vs Oakland Athletics/August 29/Baseball today / Mlb the show 25

could happen. And if you want to be playing meaningful games at the end of September, you got to put your head down and grind for the next eight weeks. And welcome in everybody. Glad you’re with us. An AL West matchup on the show. It’s the Texas Rangers taking on the Athletics. First pitch coming your way next. So almost ready to get underway and pitching in this one for the A’s, Jeffrey Springs. and Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. Well, no doubt about it. He’s going to have to put together some consistently good performances in order to bring that erra down. Now, he’s got good stuff. He’s just got to be able to have confidence, trust it, and really go after hitters, not nibble. Trust that his stuff can have late life and miss barrels of bats. Puts it away for the owl. And now we take a look at the Rangers lineup. someone who makes things happen for them in part with his legs. Alejandro Ozuna. Well, Boo, he’s a guy to watch because he capitalizes on the big situations as well as anyone hitting over 350 with runners in scoring position. And you know what that means? That means he’s a key player for this offense because he can really drive them in when the team needs him the most. He’s been clutch all year. Jeffrey. Wyatt Langford in the box now. No balls in a strike. One out. Base is empty. Swings over the top of that one. And that’s downstairs. Going to count one and two. One ball two strike gets a piece and stays alive. Foul ball still a one and two count. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. Two down, base is empty. Here comes Cory Seager. And that one just misses a ball and no strikes. Two outs. And that drops in for a strike. So, a foul ball makes it one and two. And they’ll do it again. That misses the zone and the count now even up. Really good take especially with two strikes. Wow, this guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity. Two down, nobody on. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Ninth pitch of the at bat do next. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. fights it off. You’ll see another. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. Chopped to third. Harris fires across the diamond and it’s a one, two, three inning. It’s the Rangers nothing. A’s coming up back after this on the show. Back here with my pal Singi and today’s starter Jake Latz. Well, that whip is just below the league average and that’s a good thing in this case, not allowing too many base runners. So, on most days, he’s going to go out there and compete and put his team in a position to win. And I expect to see that from him in this one today. Now it’s the rookie first baseman Nick Curts. A swing and a miss as he chases way out of the zone. can’t glove it cleanly. Still able to fire over and they get him. The misplay made it a bit messy, but they clean things up for the out. And time now to check out the A’s lineup. Not a whole lot going their way offensively the last few games, Chris. Yeah, Booan. That can put more pressure on the pitching staff to try to limit the opponent to just one or two runs a game knowing that their offense is not scoring right now. And that never really works well because you try to be too fine and you end up giving up a lot of runs. So we’ll see if everybody can just relax, bring things together and perform at a level that they’re capable of. Shay Langalers stands in now and watches strike one. Fouled off left side. Struck him out looking with the off speed stuff. Two outs. Space is empty. Brent Rooker up next for the A’s. And it’s fouled away. Let’s go. Bouncer to Young. Tosses to first. The A’s go quietly and one, two, three go the A’s. Scoreless after one. And we’re back. Top of the second and here is Adoleis Garcia. Garcia in his fifth season batting in the cleanup spot and he was born in Cuba. Springs back to work and that one pulled foul. Top of the zone for a called strike. Rusty Valentine doing the umpiring behind the dish for us. Maybe the best name in the league. Yeah, that’s a solid one. No doubt. I mean, who’s better to ask than you? I kind of wonder if Rusty is his actual name or just a nickname. Yeah, no clue. swing and a high-fly ball in the air left field. Sodrom under this one and there’s one away. Anyways, Rusty’s got a good zone. Very good on the corners of the plate, but he’ll give pitchers a little bit above the letters and below the knees if they’re earning it. Here is Jo Peterson. Get out of here. Here’s a batter who for whatever reasons plays better on the road and that should help him here today. Close but called a ball. And that’s ball two. Second inning here. No score. And there’s the automatic. That’s in there. And the count’s full. And down on strikes and now two gone. Here’s Josh Young. Josh Young. Fast ball for a strike. Two out. Space is empty. Next offering upstairs. And there’s a ball. Next offering is in for a strike. This one popped up. Curts should have this one. He makes the grab and that’ll do it. Nothing doing for the Rangers. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the second. Now it’s going to be Tyler Soderstroke. Take it high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But it’s some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Ball one, no strikes. And he gets that fast ball by him upstairs. Just missed. Come on, Ty. swaying and a ball popped in the air. That one gets down for a hit. So, a man on base to start the inning. Well, those kind of lucky soft hits will always make you smile. That line drive isn’t going to light up Statcast or anything like that, but it gets the job done. And he just kind of caught it on a weird spot of the bat, but he didn’t get cheated with the swing, that’s for sure. [Applause] Lawrence Butler the next to hit takes outside. Fly ball down the line. Ozuna makes the grab. One away. Batting six. The shorts stop. Daryl. Daryl Hernese the next to hit. The shorts stop takes a ball. Runner on the go. And that one wrapped foul. And here comes runner on the go again and lines out to third. Now a throw to first and he won’t get back in time. It’s a double play. We’ll move to the third with no score. Well, here we go. Top of the third scoreless game. So, here comes Rowdy Tleset and takes low for ball one. And a foul ball. Next offering is in for a strike. That pitch started in and ended up on the outside edge. Just changing planes and very difficult especially for a left-handed hitter to track. Swing and a fly ball in the air out towards right center field. Back against the wall with two strikes but found a way. You know what they say, he couldn’t have thrown it out there any better than that. And certainly the case that time. Just flared it back behind the second baseman and dropped it in there. Next up for Texas, Kyle Hagashio. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. Tles gets his lead at first. Nobody out. quickly into an 02 count. Both pitches were down in the zone. I think you set your sights a little bit higher because you’ll have a tendency to Oh, nice stop on a slide. There’s one on to first double play. They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leaguers. They make tough plays look simple. And stepping in is the speedy Alejandro Ozuna. There’s the strike. Top of the third, no score. Line drive. Jump throw. throw sails over his head at first and it’s going to wind up out of play. Well, that was a throw that just shouldn’t have been made. They scored a single and an error. So, the official scorer doesn’t believe a good throw would have gotten an out and neither do I. We can’t hear it from up here, but I wonder if anyone was telling him just to eat the throw. You know, that’s where communication on the infield can sometimes help out a ton. Number eight in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Man at second. This one chopped on the ground but fouled right through there. Got him. That K is his third of the game. Well, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job of getting out of the jam. ready to go for the last half of the inning. And now the right fielder JJ Blade. Blade. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. [Music] Fast ball for a strike. to go, baby. Let’s go. The one-1 is upstairs and it’s two and one. Pretty easy to give up on that pitch right there. Started on the edge of the plate with the spin. You know, it’s going to finish well off the plate. Fouls one away and now three and two. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. It’s a lead off walk. And that’s the go-ahead run. Batting eight. Third base. Brett Harris getting ready to hit. Harris. Slashed foul down the right side. That’ll hook off into the seats. Nobody out. Runner at first. That one misses and the count even. One and one in the air. Center field. Langford puts it away for the owl. Batting ninth, second base, Zack Gellof. So up next, Zack Gellof definitely wants to stay out of the double play here. Ball on the ground in the infield. Should be an inning ending double play. There’s a strike. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count out in front. Rip foul. Swings through that one. It’s a strike out. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strikeout. Now here’s the leadoff hitter for the A’s, Nick Curts. Grounded out his first time. Just missed. [Applause] The lefty the one just off the inside edge towards first. Dives, but it kicks off his glove. Still able to get it there in time. And they come away with an out after a tricky start to the play. So no runs on no hits, no errors, and one left on. On to inning number four. No score. And we’re back. John Shami with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Wyatt Langford. Let’s go, baby. That misses the zone. Ball one. Well, these Rangers, as this game goes on, have to be more disciplined at the plate. So many of their outs have come from weak contact on pitches they’re chasing outside of the strike zone. You can’t do much of anything with those locations. And that’s been true again today. And the slider just misses. And as a pitcher, when the hitters are swinging at everything, you feel no need to challenge inside the zone. You just keep working the corners and expanding that strike zone and beyond, and they just keep eating right out of your hand. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. And a swing and a miss. He’s notched four strikeouts now. And Chris, that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base. And the defense breathes a sigh of relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play. But that’s how you do it. Keep him off balance, get him out of there, and deal with the next guy. So now it’s Cory Seager. And that one a little bit high. Fourth inning underway. No score. face knock center field. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Oh, that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there. That’s about as textbook as it gets. Got his stride and load out of the way early. He stayed inside that ball and squared it up out front. Man, that was like he was in the cage hitting off a tea. Adoleis Garcia will hit next. Fly to left his first time. Next offering pop foul off to the right out of play. Seager over at first with one away. That’s in there. 0 and two now. Don’t play situation here. He’s been working up in the zone. Typically, you look for guys to get that ground ball. See if he adjusts on this next pitch. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Oh, swing and a ball hammered left field back there. Pulls it in on the warning trap. Now betting their designated hitter, Jack Peterson. And Jack Peterson stands in. Struck out swinging his first time. Pitch misses. One and0. Peterson just got a piece of it. Come on, Athletics. A 1-1. [Applause] Got him looking. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. One left for Texas. Still no score. Ready to go. Bottom four. Here’s a big power threat, Shay Langalers. This is a guy who is very highly regarded defensively. Fun to watch him control stuff behind the plate. Good game caller, good at framing, but it’s that big arm that really stands out. Garcia makes the grab, one pitch, and one out. Up next for the AI. Now, the A’s designated hitter, Brent Rooker. 0 for one so far. First pitch just misses. Base is empty. One away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Just missed. Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound. in this situation ahead 200. He’s put himself in a really good spot. There’s a swing and a drive and it gets into the corner, but it’s foul. Just missed. swings and blasts one deep to left center and it is gone. That’s worth the price of admission. His 27th home run of the season. Just like that, they move in front. It’s one- nothing. That one just sounded different. And it might have been the loudest moment yet. Man, my ears are ringing. I can feel that swing from the booth. All right, let’s go. [Applause] [Applause] Knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spent on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. [Applause] Next up for the A’s, Tyler Soderstrom. One for one with a single so far. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. A’s leading by a run. Slapped hard the other way, but foul. This one in the air. Tles in position. Hauls it in. And there’s two away. Now batting center fielder Lawrence Butler. Two down, base is empty. And now the center fielder, Lawrence Butler. He’s 0 for one. And that’s in for a strike. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. swing and a miss and he struck him out and he’s registered three Ks in this one. The A’s get one on this homer as the A’s are on top. You’re dialed into the show. And welcome back to the ballpark. And now Josh Young. Josh Young. Young measures 6’2 in 215 lbs. A former first round pick back in 2019. Well, these Rangers showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. Starters leash has to be getting tighter with his pitch count where it is, but so far he’s been really effective in this one. And a swing and a miss. You know, sometimes it just takes getting to the bullpen in order to be able to score runs and that might be the case today. check swing and he went and now two and two [Applause] and delivers outside. Expect for that guy to come right at you with a fast ball, something in the zone because he does not want to allow the laid off wall. stays alive. Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. 3-2. That one misses. So a lead off walk. A great back and forth in that at bat. He had to lay off some really close pitches and somehow Boogie found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there. I’ll tell you right now, I couldn’t have done it. TZ in the box now. Takes strike one. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. [Applause] He goes down looking. Well, I think that’s a case of overthinking right there. You got three straight fast balls looking in the O2 count just to pour it back. Here’s the catcher to hit. Kyle Hagashio. He hit into a double play his first time up. Close one. Doesn’t get the call and it’s one and0. Tying run is at first and we’re at the top of the fifth. And there’s the strike. Good approach right there. You want to get something just a little higher that you can elevate. Stay out of that double play. And a big swing and a miss. [Applause] Spoils that one. And it remains two and two. Young the base runner at first with one out. Highfly ball down the left field line going back onto the track and he makes the catch. Good pitch. He just kind of had him out in front on that pitch away and wasn’t able to stay closed. So two down now and here is Alejandro Ozuna reached on an infield single his first time. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. He’s been very consistent with his command out there on the mound. Consistently throwing at the knees. Pretty impressive when a guy can repeat his delivery like this. Two outs. Swinging a miss and a count is 0 and two. More and more guys are looking to slug regardless of the count and this situation will keep a close eye on his approach. [Applause] Pitch misses. Now one and two. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. in the air left side. Sodstrom pulls that one down and that is that. Rangers leave one. They still trail one- nothing. We head to the bottom of the fifth. Now it’s the shortstop. Daryl Hernese Latz back to work. Way high there. Ball one. Movement in the bullpen. Jack Lighter up and throwing. Armstrong getting loose as well. Come on, Athletics. down the left field line. Looks like extra bases around first heading for two and it’s a leadoff double to start the bottom of the fifth. A late jump and I think that was the difference on the play. It’s not always easy seeing the ball off the bat. Something to improve. This is JJ Bladeet. on the ground and that’s just foul. You know, these A’s, simply put, are producing a lot of quality swings. They’ve hit seven line drives already and even though some of them have been for outs, there’s nothing wrong with delivering consistent hard contact. That’s almost always going to lead to positive results. Swing and that ball smashed on the line. Ozuna puts it away and there’s one down. Up next for the A’s, third base Harris. Next up for the A’s, Brett Harris fly to center his first time. He’s 0 for one. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. That clips the corner. Pickoff moved to second. Hernese back on a dive. This one smoked out to left. Reaching for it. makes the catch. Man, that’s one of those at bats where you have to remind yourself it’s about the process. He did everything right right there. Nothing to show for it, but in your mind, you have to convince yourself that it was a very good at bat. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Jake Latz gives way and that’s an excellent job from the reliever in the starting role today. Gave him some length. Back with a new arm after this. Now pitching Jack Lighter gets the call from the pen. Well, walks have certainly been an issue for him this season, so we’ll see what kind of command he has. Now it’s the second baseman, Zack Gellof. He struck out swinging at his first at that misses. And that’s ball one. Runner at second. Two down. And another ball well out there on the mound. He’s got to go right after this hitter because you don’t want to turn this lineup over. This is the guy that you’ve got to get that final out. Get out of this inning. Man on second. Two down. And that’s fouled off. That’s a strike. And the count is even. Two and two. headed towards the corner and a foul ball. Man at second swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Kagashi right there to make the grab and that’s the inning. So, a job well done from the Rangers bullpen that time. We’re through five. It’s the A’s one and the Rangers nothing. And we’re back. All right, we go to the top half of inning number six. And now it’s the Rangers leadoff hitter number eight. Ripped but a curls foul. And it’s even up. And fouled off. [Applause] to the right side. Gellof tosses to first and that’s one out as they get the leadoff hitter in the six. Good fade and sinking action of that change up. Got that hitter to roll over. Up next for the Rangers, Wyatt Langford who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Swing and a miss. There’s the slider. One. And it really looks like these hitters have been in between with their timing today. Good fast ball, excellent slider, but they’ve not been able to commit to one velocity and stay there. Base is empty, one away, and we’re the top half of the sixth. Swang and a miss. Struck him out. Picks up strikeout number seven. Well, tough night at the dish. Punching out for the third time right there. He just hasn’t looked very comfortable at the plate. A little unsure of his timing right now. Not picking up the spin and location of these pitches. He’ll have some adjustments to make swinging a ground ball up the middle. Slings to first and Seager is set down. Rangers go down in order. Make it six shut out innings for him out there. Now it’s the A’s one and the Rangers nothing. Bottom of the six. Now here is Nick Curts. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Activity in the bullpen. Hobby Milner, the left-handed reliever, appears to be getting loose. The 10. There’s the strike. hacks and misses. It’s a strike out. And now here’s the A’s catcher, Shay Langalers, known for his rocket arm behind the plate. And ball one. And another ball. There’s the strike. And it’s two and one now. Next offering is fouled back. 2-2 and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Well, he got challenged with a good fast ball right there. Just couldn’t catch up. One down, base is empty and it remains two and two. Strike three and that’s two in a row. No, anytime you can punch out the top two guys in a lineup to start an inning, got to be feeling pretty good out there on the mound because when you think of just having a distraction, table setters on the base paths and all of a sudden you’re dealing with a number three hitter. Any distraction can cause you to serve up a cookie and instead of it being a solo shot, it’s a two or three-run homer. Now the A’s designated hitter, Brent Rooker. He’s produced the only run of the game with his solo shot earlier. Yeah, the pitching’s been outstanding in this one. So, that home run has really been the only big sign of life from either offense. Two down, nobody on here in the bottom of the sixth. That misses and that’s ball one. Gets the slider in there for a strike. Twins and misses. It’s a strike out and he strikes out the side here in the six. Impeccable command in that one. Three batters, three strikeouts. That’s electric stuff out there on the mound. Justin Sterner will take over here. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves. late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. So, now it’s the four-hole hitter, Adoleis Garcia. Both for two in this one. Misses off the inside and that is ball one. You don’t want to get beat by a fast ball in and he spits on that one. on the outside corner and the count one and one. Really good cutter that he’s able to front door and back door. That pitch is devastating. And a count one and two. Looking to get the tying run on base. Swing and a miss. struck him out. A big first out here in the seventh via the punch out. Yeah, it just does so much to change the outlook of an important inning like this. You got the leadoff hitter so critical in setting the table when you got a tight game like this. So, a strikeout really puts them on their heels. Here’s Jack Peterson. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. And that one is inside. The A’s bullpen has some movement. Number 58 appears to be getting ready. And I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. Basso, a left-hander, also throwing. trying to hold a one-run lead here in the top half of inning number seven. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Misses the zone for a ball. That was the sweeper. [Music] And that’s off the inside edge and the count’s full. [Music] Swaging a drive deep left field. Ranging back towards the wall and gone. A shot to the opposite field. It’s his eighth home run of the year and we’re all square. It’s 1-1. This game is breathing new life thanks to that home run and that’s exactly what they needed. Man, he just barely got that one out of here. And you got to love the effort in left to try and bring it back. He had a good shot at it. just couldn’t quite pull it off. It would have been a stunner if he did. So, it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. Now, here is Josh Young swung on belted way back there. And that one is out of here. They go back to back. His 13th home run of the season. And that gives him a lead. It’s 2-1. He only needed one swing to square it up. Not wasting any time in that at bat. Boo. Aggressive and it paid off. Backto back jacks. And this club is fired up right now. Boog. I mean, this is the kind of thing where you really start to notice hitters in a lineup beating off each other and the collective confidence just continues to grow. manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Justin Sterner won’t go any further tonight and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. So, a new pitcher on the mound for the A’s, number 58, and he’s been racking up strikeouts at a high rate this year. typically at least one in innings, so he’ll be tough to get to. Base is empty, one away. Rowdy TZ digs in now. That one fouled off. That misses the zone. One and one. outside with a breaking ball. That one misses and the count is filled up. Got him looking. Strike three called and a slider at the knees. Kyle Higashioa stepping in for the Rangers in the air left field down the line and it stays fair around first and hustling for second and he’s in with a stand up double. Here’s the left fielder, Alejandro Ozuna. Misses off the play. One and0. Two outs and one in scoring position. just missed. Well, I would expect in this three 0 count, you’re taking all the way. See if he’ll walk you. So now two on and two outs. Definitely lost the handle during that sequence. Four pitches for the walk and that last one didn’t even threaten the zone. catcher might want to go talk to him. And now it’s the Rangers leadoff hitter 0 for three in this one. First pitch and he just misses. He never moved because he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. And that’s him for a strike. Right through there for a strike. Two on, two outs. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Lays out, but he can’t squeeze it to first and he beats it. Everyone’s safe. Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there. Fielder got a piece of it, but the way that thing came off the bat, no surprise at all. He couldn’t pick it cleanly. It’s a very difficult play and that swing definitely was deserving of a hit. Now the base is loaded. Big opportunity for them to break this game open. So bases all loaded up. Langford the next to hit in for a strike. Going one. Just missed. And that is downstairs. Two and one back to back breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you, that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So I think the confidence level is raised right here. So they’re all loaded up with two outs. That one back up the middle and it gets through. One runs in now a second crosses the plate and they take a threerun lead. Picks himself up a couple of ribbies. Timing on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. Didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. Manager out of the dugout now and he will make a move to dip into the A’s bullpen. Number 58 out of the game. It’s a three-run game, and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. So, a new pitcher on the mound for the A’s, Tyler Ferguson. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpin can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Seager stands in now. one for three. The shorts stop takes a ball. Two on, two outs. There’s the strike. 95 of that one. Hot shot to first base and he snags it to end the inning. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. It’s now 4-1. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Jacob Webb, left-handed batter at the plate, and he’s been excellent in those matchups this year. So, this seems like a calculated move. Now, the left fielder, Tyler Sodstrom, one for two. Climb the ladder with that fast ball. It’s 0 and one. had a foul ball inside. One and two to count. Fast ball is outside. fouls it back with two strikes. Fouls that off to the left and we’ll do it again. Two two now. Battling here as he fouls it away. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. Counts full. Three and two. Well, clearly not too happy with the call there. Thought he caught the top of the zone and you could pretty much read his lips saying that’s not up. [Music] headed towards the corner and that’s a fair ball into second easily with a leadoff double. But when you see that many pitches in an at bat, your chances of succeeding go up. And right there we see the result. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Here’s the center fielder, Lawrence Butler. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. If you’re going to get something going, this is the time to do it. You get the leadoff man on. Everybody’s got to look over the shoulder and say, “I’m just going to keep the line moving.” Don’t try to do too much. And a ground ball to first and it goes just fouled. Went with the sweeper, but it misses. Swing and a miss. Had him out front for the strike out. Up next for the And now the shorts stop Daryl Hern. Daryl Hern. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. Come on, Athletics. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Man at second. That one ripped right center field and that should be extra bases. Run comes in from second. It’s 42. He’s in with a double. And that’s his second double of the night. Good two strike hitting right there, Boo. A bit of a lost start for some. So that was nicely done to beat the odds. Man, that feels so good to shoot an absolute bolt the opposite way. Split the gap and know that you’ve got extra bases right off the bat. That’s the kind of thing hitters dream about when they’re falling asleep at night. Now, that sets up a huge at bat in this ball game. Here comes a skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Jacob Webb will depart. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout and we’ll be back with a new pitcher. Now on the bump, Hobie Milner. Pretty big spot he’s coming into trying to strand that runner at second base. So, he’s going to need to make some quality pitches. He does have first open if he needs to use it. Now it’s the right fielder JJ BL and that’s in for a strike. 0 and one with the tying run at the plate here. The bottom of the seventh. Well struck deep right field. Way back and out of here. He shoots one out to right. His 11th of the year. And we have a tie ball game. It’s 44. He put a charge into that one. That was a lightning swing right there. No doubt about it. [Applause] Singi, this was a mammoth home run over 460 ft according to Stackcast. You know, Boo, there only maybe 20 or so guys in the game that can hit a baseball that far and it’s absolutely crazy it’s even that many. Such an impressive swing of the bat right there. One down. Brett Harris up next for the A’s. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. A’s looking to put the go-ahead run on base. tied at four. Swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. Two away now. Now batting second base. Zack Gellof up next for the A’s. This one in the air. Young drifts towards it. Brings it in. And that will end the inning. The A’s with a two-run blast. It’s now tied 4-4. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. And welcome back to the ballpark. And now the right fielder, Adoleis Garcia. Fast is outside. The Athletics have some bullpen action. Shawn Nukem, the left-hander, up and throwing. Basso also throwing. Next offering is downstairs. Right through there for a strike outside corner. Got him looking well. Big strike out right there and maybe a little controversial with the call. I think he got a little bit of favor on the mound. No question about it. It’s not exactly what you want to see in a big spot like that. And I’m sure there’s some chirping going on from the dugout making it clear that wasn’t his best call behind the plate today. And now Jack Peterson late swing fouled to the left and he’ll one. And that’s a strike. All tied up and we’re in the top of the eighth. Almost got him. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. One down. Base is empty. Foul ball still a one and two count. And that’s outside. Five foul balls in this at bat so far and these two are going headtohead. You can see the crowd. They’re starting to get into it a little bit more and more each pitch even though there hasn’t been a ball in play yet. That one missed. Josh Young in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. In an era with a lot of swing and miss and strikeouts, you got to love an at bat like this. No one giving in. Tied at four. And that’s ball four. That’s a great at bat. He saw a lot of pitches and earned a walk. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk. Very gritty. So, a change being made at first base on the pinch run. Ezekiel Duran. Ezekiel. And now Josh Young. He’s already homerred here in this one. Ball one there. I love this part of the game. Does he really want to try and steal second against this catcher? I know he’s fast, but it’s pretty risky. On the ground. Could be two to second. Pulls him off the bag. Now batting the first base, Rowdy Toled. Here’s Rowdy Tles. And that drops in for a strike. One out. The go-ahead run is at second. Swinging a foul out of play. He’s falling behind in a huge spot. Boo. Got to do what it takes to come through. Maybe choke up on the bat a little bit. Spread out those feet. Whatever it takes. Well, he missed badly with that O2 fast ball. Hitter has to understand probably wants to try to put him away with that pitch. So, got to stay ready for it. A one, two. And that’s a base hit coming home. Here’s the throw. Tag. Ow. They cut down the go-ahead run at the plate. Oh, these guys were trying to take a lead late in this ball game. It looked like he had a real chance to get in there safely, but the defense was all over it. Close play at the plate. The tag gets him just in time to keep the game tied. Substitution being made at first. Here’s the pinch runner for Texas, Michael Helman. Michael Kyle Higashioa stepping in for the Rangers. That one almost got him. Two outs out in front and foul to the left side. And a count. One and two. Two on, two outs. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Got him swinging. No runs on two hits, no errors, and two men left stranded. Home half of inning number eight straight ahead and we are tied 4-4. Now pitching. Back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Number 57, Luis Carlo. Now, here’s the leadoff hitter for the A’s, Nick Curts, 0 for three with two ground outs and a strike out. Swing and a ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. A leadoff single and the go-ahead run is aboard. First pitch swing in. Went up there with a plan to be aggressive. Just kept it simple. played Pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from. And there’s just no one there to knock it down. No outs. Runner at first. Shay Langalers up next for the A’s on the ground to second. Might be two. There’s one. Plenty of time at first. That’s a double play. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. [Music] Rooker. Next up for the A’s, Brent Rooker. He’s already homered in this game. And there’s a foul ball. Two down, nobody on here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. Gets a piece and stays alive. spoils a two- strike pitch. And he’ll see another. One more time. And a swing and a miss. And it’s a three up, three down inning. No runs, one hit, no errors, and no one left. Through eight full and we are tied 4-4. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Shawn Nukem. Well, he’s struggled quite a bit. So, this is another opportunity to get on the right track. He’s given up more than one hit per any pitch so far this season. Number 19, Ozuna in the box now. Takes strike one. Check swing. No appeal. And one and one. Just missed. That one drilled left field and it gets by him and he’s going to get to second with nobody out. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Go ahead run on base. And now it’s the Rangers leadoff hitter. Check swing. No appeal. Go ahead run in scoring position. Nobody out. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And the count is two and0. Homeplayed umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. And a foul ball makes the count two and one. And that is out of play. That’s way outside. And now it’s three and two. Wyatt Langford in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Go ahead run in scoring position. Nobody out here in the top of the ninth on the ground to third. Harris now one gone in the ninth. Now that is centerielder Wyatt Langford. So the go-ahead run in scoring position. Wyatt Langford stepping in for the Rangers. hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. And Nukem fires and a breaking ball misses outside. Let’s go in the dirt but kept close. Runner holds tight as the count moves to two and two. [Applause] Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. Ozuna the runner at second with one away. That one lifted to left. Sodestrom sizing this one up. That’s out number two. Here’s Cory Seager. Cory Seager. He gets the intentional walk here. And now a force at any base with two gone. Now batting rightielder Garcia making a move at first. Entering is the pinch runner Cody Freeman number 39. So the go-ahehead run is into scoring position and next will be the cleanup hitter Adoleis Garcia 0 for four with a pair of strikeouts and a pair of flyouts. Tap foul at the plate. Tied at four. Way inside. Two aboard, two outs. Probably the best one we have seen. throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. 44 in the ninth. Lined and that’s a base hit. Runner around third on his way to the plate. He’ll score easily and it’s an RBI single and in the ninth they take the lead. A perfect example right there that plate discipline it pays off. The deeper he gets into account the more comfortable he becomes and he usually wins the battle. First and second, two outs. Durant now at the plate. And there’s a strike on the outside corner. That one inside. One ball, one strike. The A’s bullpen has some movement. Number 49 up and loosening in the pen. Alvarado also getting ready. Next pitch misses. Now two balls in a strike. Tough spot right here. A couple runners on. Two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. And that misses and the count is three and one. At this point in the game, you cannot issue free passes. He’s going to have to challenge this hitter. Hitter’s got to be ready to swing it. And that’ll load the bases. A real bad time for a walk. You’re trailing in this ball game trying to keep things close. They’ve been in a difficult spot and things aren’t getting any easier. Two outs, bases full at the plate. Josh Young, swinging a ground ball and foul ball. Ball in the dirt and it gets away. Nothing happening on the bases though. One-run game here in the top of the ninth. That one found hard the other way. Struck him out looking. But they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s now a 54 ball game. We’re back and on the mound is the closer Robert Garcia. Well, he’s been excellent against left-handed hitters this year and that’s his first test. This looks like a good move to the pin in terms of the matchup. Robert Garcia. The batter now, Tyler Sodstrom. leftielder Tyler Sodm and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. One straight. way outside and it’s one and two and a swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball. Well, that right there is what you want to see out of your closer. Come in and close the door. Cancel any hope that that opponent has in making some type of comeback in the ball game. Tell you what, that helps him settle in and that helps everybody else relax a little bit to get these other two outs. Butler in the box now takes strike one. And I know you want to be patient as a hitter, but you got to be ready to jump on the first thing straight. And he got one right there, but left the bat on his shoulder. One down, base is empty. ground ball right side in plenty of time to first and he’s out. Well, there’s a lot writing on that at bat right there. Nice job of the pitcher to bear down, make the pitch, get the ground ball. Excellent piece of work. The Athletics down to their last out. Daryl Hernese up next for the A’s. That is upstairs for ball one. Trying to close out a one-run lead. And the home team trying to pull it out just off the inside edge. And a foul ball makes the count two and one. And that one fouled off. Garcia is just one strike away. Pitch misses there and now three and two. Big pitch coming right here. Last thing he wants to do is put the tying run on base, but he can’t groove one either. Ball four. where he walked in and that keeps things going. One of the things about that two-out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So, a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI. And those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. Headed towards the corner and it stays fair. And now they’ll have runners on the corners with two away. One of the hardest things to do in the game to stay mentally and physically ready for the big opportunity and he came through for his club right there. Bottom of the ninth, one-run game, two on. Now the third baseman, Brett Harris trying to deliver as the hero. And there’s the strike. Oh, they’re applying pressure. Quality at bats, quality swings right now. and see this offense doing it one man to the next. Showing a lot of fight right now and they’re making it difficult for the back end of this bullpen to close out this game. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. Late on that fast ball. It might be time to choke up a little bit. Get that front foot down early. Maybe even just spread out. He’s really late right now. This one chopped to first. Steps on the bag himself. Ball game. Well, you take a tie ball game into the ninth on the road. You know that you’ve got some work to do. You got to score, but then you’ve also got to get three outs in the bottom half of that inning. They did just that today. Very well played ball game. Get this win on the road. Everybody’s happy with the W. Close one here today. and your final 54 for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
