Big day of news, Brian. You give the Cowboys a thumbs up for everything they’ve done. Yeah, so far so good. If if Brian Shottenheimimer in fact is talking about potentially claiming some guys, the roster could be different. Uh I’m totally on board with what they’re trying to do. Like we call it a second draft. Yeah, that’s that’s what it is. No, he he is not wrong. And that’s there’s a uh there’s a couple of there’s a couple of opportunities that are really really good to add players. You know, free agency is this team doesn’t always play in free agency, but the when you start to talk about free agency, college free agency after the draft, that’s, you know, the undrafted free agents, that’s something the Cowboys have had some success in. Uh, so that was an opportunity. And then with this with the roster reductions and stuff like that, then you’re able to to dive into that. You know, if you’re a you’re a team that’s not very good and there’s going to be some teams that are pretty talent poor. And I mentioned the Saints as a team. If you’re one of those teams, you kind of look at your roster and you’re thinking like, my god, there’s people cutting better players than what we have, then you need to be super aggressive and try and do everything you can. You know, there’s there’s certain rules for how many guys you can claim and stuff like that. But but there’s they they there’s teams that need to need to do this. And you know, the Cowboys are are kind of I think in a couple of spots. It’s interesting what they did at cornerback. We were were saying that only five guys and with Carson being a guy that know they they were saying, hey, he was coming along close. He was going to be close and all that, but he never he never played in the preseason at all. And you got to IR him and you’re bringing back Goodwin and stuff like Goodwin really does. Yeah, good. You don’t have digs available. So you got Bland, Elum, Booth, and Children. You got four corners that can suit up and play for you. So like Beanie Bishop just got cut from Pittsburgh and that was a guy as a rookie, four interceptions, two force fumbles and a fumble recovery and is a slot player. So they might have Zion Childress and and I’m fine with that thinking that’s going to be your guy. But him and then CJ Acoy, the Nigerian nightmare from the Baltimore Ravens who we talked about when they were playing them at defensive tackle, like there are some names out there that immediately will catch your eye and say, “Can the Cowboys jump in on these guys?” Well, that’s that’s the thing because Eric and I had a chance to when the Ravens were in town, Jerry Sanduski. Jerry Sanduski with a G. Jerry with a G. Jerry Jerry with a G. And we we were talking. I I said, “Listen, I don’t have any question. I just want to know about your defensive tackles.” Yeah, it was a good question. And you know, here’s a guy that uh that has has size. He doesn’t have a lot of experience. I mean, really none, but man, you talk about the power that he plays with, the point of attack, the size he has. I They the Ravens, the Ravens were going to be a team and and we talked about it earlier that they’re a team that might win the Super Bowl. We we thought this was one of the deepest teams in the league. Yeah. And they were going to they they teams always say, “Oh, we’re going to have to we’re going to have to cut some hard it’s going to be tough. We’re going to put some you it’s going to be some difficult guys, different difficult decisions and all.” No, the Ravens can actually say that because they they will put some because they just their roster is really that good. So, they they you know, they’re going to put some good guys on the street. So, I do hope I do hope that that the Cowboys do take advantage of their claiming spot. They picked 12th in the draft. So, that means they’ll, you know, their claiming spot will be that spot in that area until I believe week four of the NFL season. And then it goes to the teams with the worst record. So Dallas is in a spot where they can claim some guys that are that you know that maybe you know that they’ll be ahead of some teams that behind him that uh can do that. Looks like you know what they’ve said about Aoya this off season. They believe in his trajectory and praised how quickly he’s ascended as part of that international player program. It’s just a numbers game where they they have such good starters and depth. Yeah. They’re hopeful to get him back on the practice squad. And if I’m the Cowboys, I’m saying, “Sorry, no, we’re not letting you do that. He needs to start for us.” He’d be very excited to come to the Cowboys if you’re a corner or a one technique right now. Yeah, absolutely. I I I I just I hope it’s not just all talk that, you know, hey, that they really that Will Mcclelay and the pro guys and, you know, Alex Lumis and those guys over there can do a good job of of kind of they they I know they’ve identified players that they’re watching, teams that they’ve watched, you and certain positions that they’ve watched. So, let’s hope. I don’t think it’s talk. I cuz I think this is one of the best things the Cowboys do by necessity. Like they they have had to be really good at this and you know I I think they they have showed they are absolutely willing to bring guys in and have competition for all spots at all times. I I took Shotty at his at face value there. I thought the part where he was saying this is all collaborative and I’ve never been put in a situation where I got to fight with the organization cuz we have a conversation and agree to things. That was the only thing that made the BS meter shoot up a bit for me during that presser. Yeah, I think to me that, you know, he was he was here when Mazy Smith was drafted, you know, so it’s a little bit easier for him to probably side with the Joneses on this one. If he’s a new coach, you know, he would if he was brand new to the system and, you know, he would probably say, “Well, why why we why we doing this?” Yeah. you know, but the fact he was here. There’s there’s way there’s things you have to do as a coach, honestly, you have to know what battles to fight. You know, you can’t fight every single battle. You can’t I don’t know if I’m dying on the Mazy Smith hill if I’m a coach because I’m thinking there’s other things I need to, you know, there’s other things I need to get. Especially if you’re a coach with no skins on the wall, no experience. I don’t think Bellichic or Andy Reid standing around for that. Yeah. But you see what I’m saying about that? Like there’s certain things that you will absolutely just fight the Joneses on. I don’t know if I’d fight the Joneses and especially with the fact that that that you got Winfrey and some guys that you were Houston Winfrey, you know, some guys that that that that you know can actually play. Sure. So I’m not I’m not fight. There’s other battles I’m going to need to try and win. Here’s what I would try to tell the Joneses, though. I’m trying to build something special here, and I need the guys to look at me like they got to impress me. Yeah, there can’t be a, “Oh, well, I’m good because Jerry likes me type of deal.” I I think that does erode your authority. I I honestly feel like that, man, this is going to sound terrible, but I kind of feel like that maybe Tolbert might be in the same boat. I am and I say Tolbert because I say Tolbert because, you know, you wonder like it to be honest with you, I felt like the Brooks played really well this, you know, this season. the Bruce has played well when he’s given opportunities to I will say this though again this Tolbert I think is when and we asked this question when Mingo’s four weeks are up I don’t think this is about Ryan Fenoi or anything I think this is about if Brooks or excuse me if Tolbert is not played up to snuff in four weeks that’s the roster spot I’m looking for right there like they’re going to go how does Mingo get back that that’s it if we have four weeks from today and and all of a sudden Tolbert has not done anything but maybe he had one game and three just okay games and and then because I know coach even talked about what Ryan Fenoy did. I I told you guys on special teams just watch the tape watch watch him block in the on the crack the other day throwing his body in there and doing some things. So, I I think Fenoi is going to I think I think he’s turned the corner on some of this stuff. When you dig in and look at the film and some of the stuff he’s doing on special teams, he’s almost a can and then he’s getting open as a route runner, as a wide receiver. Like, he’s got a skill set that is is special. We would be talking about him if if Joe Milton was just serviceable at times this preseason as a quarterback. [Music]
