🔴LIVE 🔴 Texas Rangers vs Oakland Athletics/August 31/ Mlb the show 25
A west matchup on the show. It’s the Texas Rangers taking on the Athletics and we’ll be back with the first pitch right after this. All right, just about ready for baseball and towing the slab in this one, Jeffrey Springs. How about a scouting report on him? Well, it hasn’t been a great year so far in terms of erra, but he’s had some decent games and there have been some flashes of greatness, if you will. We’ll see today if he’s able to get ahead of hitters and perhaps get some swings and misses, put himself in a position to bring that erra down because, you know, in the back of his mind beyond the W, he wants to have a better earn run average. Michael Helman leading things off and takes a strike. First pitch 706. Next offering is in for a strike. Quickly into an 02 count. Both pitches were down in the zone. I think you set your sights a little bit higher because you’ll have a tendency to chase if you look down in that area. Stays alive. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. Drops into the glove and there’s one down. And now we take a look at the Rangers lineup. Sing, this righty heavy lineup must be licking their chops with a lefty on the mound. Well, to me, Boog, it shows the managers trying to set these players up to have a big game. Facing an opposite-handed pitcher, you only get a fraction of a second longer to see the ball and decide to swing, but that can be the difference between a line drive and a swinging strike. Ezekiel Duran, the next to hit, takes ball one. Next offering is fouled back inside. Just missed. That’s a little high. And that’s ball three and a foul ball. One out. Base is empty. Goes down looking. Well, that’s a pitch. that slider from an opposite-handed pitcher that you usually see very well, but for some reason he didn’t pick it up and it just kind of got into the strike zone late. Gave up on it a little bit early. Wyatt Langford in the box here lets that one go for a ball. Come on, Jeffrey. And a slider in there for a strike. One strike. Just missed. Two out. Base is empty. Line drive. And this might be trouble. And that’s going to get into the corner. Makes the turn and heads for second. And he’s in there. It’s a first inning double. Everything came together perfectly for him right there. Loud contact leads to the double. I mean, you could tell it had extra bases written all over it as it jumped off of his stick. So, runner at second, two down. Next to bat will be the Texas cleanup hitter, Adoleis Garcia. First offering and it just misses. Boy, you always want to come out in the first inning, try to put something up on the board. It’s a big two out double right there. See if the cleanup man can drive him in and put a tally up there on the board. Let’s go. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. And that’ll do it. One left for Texas. And now the Athletics offense gets its first shot here. No score. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back here with my pal Singi and on the hill in this one, Jack Lighter. And Chris, pitching on the road has not been particularly kind to him. Yeah. And you don’t want to be too quick to say that he can’t pitch on the road. Sometimes, you know, it’s just a matter of luck. It’s not having a feel difference between the bullpen mound to the mound out there on the playing field. Don’t know what it is, but I know this. He’s got good enough stuff to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home. So, we’ll see what he’s able to do in this one. Nick Curts leading things off and takes a strike. [Applause] Let’s go. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. One away. Stood absolutely no chance on that slider right there. And I don’t mean to laugh, but that’s a tough one. I mean, pretty much a perfect strikeout pitch. I mean, it looks like a fast ball middle in kind of has cutter action and it just bunches you up to whereas you can’t get your hands through and the barrel to it and not much you can do unless you recognize the spin early and you spit on it. Shay Langalers in the box with one away as he takes ball one. The next offering misses two and 0 and that drops in for a strike. In today’s game, not that many fast ball counts, but hitters still in the back of their minds, they’re looking for one. Two change up call right there. Excellent pitch selection to go with and it’s even up. Well, as a hitter, you’re hoping that the command on that sinker doesn’t come until later in the ball game. But if that’s how it’s going to be all day, it’s going to be a tough one for the offense. Just misses and a full countdown. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. eighth pitch of the at bat coming up and that’s ball four and that’s their first base runner of the game. Now this was a story we were paying attention to before the game. We’ve seen him give up walks in the past and it’s an issue once again early on. Brent Rooker batting with one down. Takes a strike. Next pitch is outside. Langalers the base runner at first with one out. [Music] That’s a ball. Pickoff move to first and he’s back in safely. Let’s go. caught him looking for the K. Batting. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Tyler Soderstrom. Sodrom. And there’s a breaking ball that drops in there. One ball, one strike. Popped up to the left into foul ground. Langford on his way over. Won’t get to this one. It drops. Foul. Pitch misses. The countdown two and two. Felt clearly not too happy with the call there. Thought he caught the top of the zone and you could pretty much read his lips saying that’s not up. Tyler, that’s way outside. Full count now. 3-2. Two out. Runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. All right, let’s go. Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. An inning in the books tonight and we’re scoreless here on the show. all set for the start of the inning. Here’s Josh Young taking it high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform, but at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Right through there for a strike. in the air to left down the line. Sodrom sizing this one up. One up, one down. Good pitch. He just kind of had him out in front on that pitch away and wasn’t able to stay closed. Stepping in Kyle Higashio. That one finds the zone and it’s 0 and one in there for a strike at the top of the zone. He doesn’t seem to like to pitch up. Hasn’t offered on either one of those pitches. 02 count now. I think the guy’s going to climb the ladder out there. One down, base is empty. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. You usually are going to see that inside fast ball a little longer coming in from the opposite side, but that pitch really got in on him right there. I mean, that’s a wellthrown pitch. Tough to do anything with that in terms of getting the hands through and the sweet spot of the bat to the baseball. Cody Freeman stepping in for the Rangers and that drops in for a strike. That one at the knees for a strike. This guy’s not wasting any pitches. Hitters got to get into swing mode. This is a good time to expand the zone. Throw something maybe down in the dirt. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. And good work there as he gets a one, two, three. Rangers go down quickly there. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. And we’re back. We head to the bottom of the second. Now, here is Jacob Wilson. Sing. You talk about a guy that has all the skills. The range is really good, but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays. first pitch just misses. And because of that big power arm, he’s able to play a little bit deeper, make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond and still get a pretty good runner. That’s impressive. And that one wrapped foul. And that skips in the dirt. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taking at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You could tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. This one in the air right field. Fair ball. Now he turns and heads for second. The throw in and the bottom of the second starts with the double. He went up there and got it with two strikes. I’m not going to leave this in the umpire’s hands. I’m going to be aggressive. It was in a location where he could get those arms extended that he loves to do. So nice job right there coming back in that at bat. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Now it’s the right fielder. Just missed. Rusty Valentine calling balls and strikes. Boo. Something I hear from hitters about Valentine is they know they don’t have to protect off the plate too much in two strike counts and that can be a big deal in terms of your confidence and seeing some pitches in that at bat. That one hammered but pulled foul. That’s inside. Three and one. Lawrence Butler in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here [Applause] and ball four two aboard. Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there. Pretty much gifted in first base with a quick free pass. First and second, no outs. Now here is Lawrence Butler. In the grand scheme of things, this at bat might not feel important because it’s early, but it could create a domino effect for things to come. Control what you can here and have a strong at bat. It immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. There it was. A high velocity fastball in the zone. I think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter. He’s got good stuff. Pitch inside the zone and trust it. swings and pulls a foul to the right side. For whatever reasons, this is a hitter that performs better in night games. We’ll see what he brings in this one. This one in the dirt, but no advance from the runners. Second inning here, no score. That one out to right. [Applause] He’s got it. Runner tags at second and he moves up 90 ft. Runners at the corners now. One away. Batting eight. Third base. Daryl Daryl Hern up next for the A’s. How many times have we seen an early at bat change the course of a game? It happens every night in baseball and maybe it happens again here. Ball one there. In this situation, the batter’s got to know what the pitcher is trying to do to him, and that’s trying to get him to hit the ball on the ground, get two for one. You got to look for something up in the zone. At worst case scenario, you deliver the sacrifice fly. Fast ball for a strike. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. Next offering upstairs. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. And a big swing and a miss. Well, in this situation with a runner on first, less than two outs. Some say, “Hey, get the ground ball double play with two strikes. Some people say get the strike out.” I think you just execute your pitch. Make the best pitch you possibly can and let the result be whatever it’s going to be. Runners at the corners. One away. Bottom half of inning number two. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Next one misses and it’s three and two. Way to lay off that pitch down. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. Oh, that was such a great opportunity to grab the lead. You had the infield back. All you’ve got to do is just put the ball in play on the ground and you drive across a run. That’s a frustrating outcome for the hitter. Now, I’ll still have a chance, but it’s probably going to take a clutch hit with two outs. Zack Gellof will hit next. That pitch in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. To the left side, but it is well fouled. Runners on first and third. Two away. Off the mark there now. One and two. [Applause] Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Huge strike out there. He’s in a tough spot. Had to make a great pitch. Did it. Got the strike out. Gets out of the jam. Clearly he’s happy with those results. Top half of the third inning. And now here is Jonah. Springs back to work. Heim measures 6’4 in 29 years old and he was drafted in the fourth round back in 2013. edge of the zone for a strike and the count one and one. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Safe at first. No play. We’ll see how they score this. Knight second. Here’s Dylan Moore. [Applause] inside. And that’s ball one. And that’s downstairs and outside. Two and that one is absolutely belted. One hops off the wall. Should be extra bases coming home. The relay, but it’s offline. He will score and it’s one- nothing. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. So, up next, Michael Helman flyed to right his first time. Just missed. man at second and that misses now. Two balls in a strike. in the air. Right field sizes this one up. He’s got it. Grounder tags at second. Throw into third and he makes it up to third with one away. Oh, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. So digging in, Ezekiel Durant caught looking his first time up and ball one. Moore takes his lead at third with one away. in the dirt. Blocked. Well done behind the dish. And that’s downed away. Next offering in there for a strike and that is strike one. Check swing called strike. sit down and ball four, two aboard. Up next for the Rangers, left fielder Wyatt Langford. Runners at the corners here. One away now. The left fielder Wyatt Langford doubled his first time up. [Applause] at the dish looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot. Anything but the inning inning double play boo. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third and a swing and a miss. Knowing that the pitcher wants a ground ball double play opportunity here. You’ve got to lay off pitches down in the zone right there. Swinging at that pitch. That’s a no no. Rolled to short. Possible two ball. Here’s Gellof for one over to first. Safe. Now that I promise you, they’re guys that get a little bit faster when they can smell an RBI. That was a possible inning ending double play. Great hustle and he gets rewarded with the RBI because of it. Adoleis Garcia stepping in for the Rangers. He popped out to the catcher his first time off. Swinging a foul straight back. He might want to steal second in this spot, but he’s dealing with a catcher that has one of the best pop times in the game. He needs to pick his spot very wisely. Step off throw to first. Langford dives back in safely. Now one missed. The Athletics have some bullpen action. Tyler Ferguson, the hardthrowing righty, is up and loosening. Alvarado also getting ready. And now the lefty and a foul ball. Two outs. Got him looking. He’s notched four strikeouts now, but two runs for him and they jump ahead. We head now to the home half of inning number three. It’s the Rangers two and the A’s nothing. Nick Curts digs in now. Curts a very strong candidate for rookie of the year. He’s been a real story. One of the best young players in the majors this season. there. There’s the strike. That one ripped but fouled. Baby, let’s go. That misses. going to count one and two. Pretty standard high 02 fast ball right there. If you’re smart, you’ll look for something down in the zone, but not too far. Don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt. Fans another. And that’s three straight strikeouts. And here is Shay Langalers. Worked to walk in his first trip to the plate. That pitch in for a strike. Go and one. just missed. The 1-1 is fouled off. One down, base is empty. Fouls it off. Still one and two. teased the zone with that fast ball a little bit up. Fouled it off. Expect him to go a little bit higher with this next one. There’s a swing and a drive that’s back there onto the track and he makes the catch. Now batting designated hitter. Next up for the A’s, Brent Rooker. And first offering is fouled off and that’s outside. Well, the offense has gotten going and a pitcher wants to go out there, have a real quick inning, get those guys back into the dugout so those bats can stay hot. So, a foul ball makes it one and two. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. Well, he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. She’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit. Try to move it around. Oh, that’s a strike out. And that’ll do it for the inning. And one, two, three go the A’s. They trail things here. Two nothing. Welcome back. And now on the mound to start the fourth, Tyler Ferguson. And as relievers go, he’s not a big strikeout guy. He tries to force weak contact. So command and execution are huge for him. Josh Young getting ready to hit. Fly to left his first time. Baby, let’s go. Sliced hard but fouled. And the 01 inside just missed fought off foul. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Definitely made him chase a little bit out of his own right there. I don’t think that’s a strike if he takes it. Pretty textbook pitching. Get ahead in the count. Get the guy in the box on his heels and then force him to chase your pitch where he doesn’t have much of a chance to do any damage. At the plate, Kyle Higashioa struck out swinging his first time. Lace down the line. Could be extra bases. Takes the turn. He’s digging for second. The throw in. But he’s in there easily. Now batting hitter Cody Freeman Singy. That was a laser shot. And a good thing we have Stackcast to give us the details. Yeah, get out of the way on that one. That ball flew out of the box at 112 mph. You talk about generating a ton of power in that swing. He did it with quick hands, good lower half, and just unloaded on that ball. Freeman at the plate and takes high there. Higashioa the runner at second with one away. Rangers. Pitch misses there. Two balls, no strikes. [Applause] And that’s a little bit high. And ball four, two aboard. Now batting catcher Jonah. Two on, one out. Next up for Texas, Jonahheim reached on an infield single his first time. And that’s in for a strike. Really good job in this spot to get ahead in the count. He’s going to have to continue finish off this hitter. Now he can’t squeeze it behind the plate. Nothing happening on the bases though. Runners at first and second with one gone. Top half of inning number four. Base hit into the outfield. Headed for the plate. Here comes the throw. It’s off the mark and he scores and they’re up by three. Well, that was an important at bat in this game. So, a great job there stepping up to the challenge. It’s hard to hit a baseball much better than that. And even a lot of professional hitters aren’t able to reach an exit velo. Tell you what, that’s a very impressive swing at the bat. Now it’s the second baseman, Dylan Moore. And that one is in for a strike at 95. And it’s 0 and one. And there’s a ball. Could use a ground ball here. Something in the infield. Runner at first base. Get two. Get out of this. And that one’s a little bit low. And the count two and one. It’s a big opportunity right here. But I love the way he’s slowing the game down. He’s shrinking his zone, making sure he gets the pitch that he wants to hit. Next offering is downstairs. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. That one back up the middle and it gets through. Runner in from third to extend their lead. It’s an RBI single and they lead by four. Well, that was one of those high percentage advantage counts where batting averages are just so much higher. couldn’t get any air under it, but he smoked that ball back up the middle. Timing was just perfect. Got great wood on it and there was just no chance for the infielders with how hard he hit it. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Tyler Ferguson won’t go any further and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. And we’ve got ourselves a pitching change. Elvis Alvarado big swing and miss stuff right here. Boo. averaging more than one strikeout per inning this season. So far, he’s been pretty electric. So, the lineup flips over and now the center fielder, Michael Helman, that misses. And that’s ball one. Two on, one out. Just off the inside edge. Swings here and drives one. Well, left field way back and you can forget it. [Music] That’ll fire up the dugout. His fourth home run of the season. And they add on. It’s 7 nothing. Already playing with the lead. And now they’re celebrating a home run. They’re having a great time out there. He’s so good at getting his arms extended and that’s exactly what he did right there. You don’t typically want to pull a pitch in that part of the plate, but he doesn’t allow his wrist to roll over. Stays through the ball, gets the loft, and gets the home run. One out, base is empty. Ezekiel Durant now at the plate. And that one upstairs. Ball one. Next pitch misses and the count now two and nothing. to third. Throws to first in time. Here’s the left fielder, Wyatt Langford. We talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it. But pushing the offensive side for just a second, Chris, it’s the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most. Well, he gets to balls that get by most people at that position. Just really impressive because there’s certain times a ball comes off the bat automatically that team that hit it thinks that they’ve got a base hit or they may have extra bases and he just takes it away. That’s off the mark and it’s two and one. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field around first and hustling for second. Now the tag at second and he’s out trying for two and they’re happy to just get off the field after that frame. And welcome back to the ballpark. Now the left fielder Tyler Sodstrom. That one off the mark. Ball one. This is one of those times when you want to be aggressive. Go ahead and pitch to contact. Let the defense work behind you. You’ve got a nice comfortable lead. Don’t try to be too fine. This one ripped, but foul to the right. You know, these A’s just haven’t produced as many competitive at bats as I’d like to see in this one. They’ve gone down on strikes at a high rate today, so it’s probably time to simplify the approach and just find ways to put the ball in play. One up, one down. Oh, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Jacob Wilson up next for the A’s. Doubled his first time. When he steps into the batters box, the comfort level looks so high. It doesn’t matter what kind of delivery that pitcher has, what kind of velocity, what kind of secondary stuff. He is so settled in there. He owns the home plate area. Rips that one center field. Helman makes a nice running catch. That was just a great jump and route to the ball. Well, it had to be. If he was going to cover all that ground and bring in that sinking liner, that’s the way it had to be done. Nice job. Come on, gets under and pops it up. Durant in position. And that will end the inning. So they go quietly there. We played four. It’s the Rangers seven and the A’s nothing. And we’re back. Top five. John Shabi with Chris Singleton. And leading it off, Adoleis Garcia. Go to gold. Baby, let’s go. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Well, these Rangers showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. They’re only swinging at pitches inside the zone. Chasing hasn’t been an issue at all. Less than 10% of their swings have been at pitches outside the zone. League average right now somewhere around 30%. Just missed. Smoke to right center and this one’s going to go out of here. a solo shot. His 19th home run of the year. It’s eight nothing. That one just sounded different. And it might have been the loudest moment yet. Man, my ears are ringing. I could feel that swing from the booth. That’s an impressive swing of the bat to go over the wall to the opposite field gap. And you know, there are a lot of guys that just don’t have the pop to do that and probably just as many who don’t have the approach either. He let that ball travel and he got great extension on the follow through to drive it out of here. Manager out of the dugout now and he will make a move to dip into the A’s bullpen. Elvis Alvarado departs and as he heads for the dugout, we’ll take a quick break. New arm on the mound when we get back. Now pitching. So, a new pitcher on the mound for the A’s number 54. He’s into the game with the bases empty. And the batter now Josh Young for two in this one. And first offering is fouled off. and that one upstairs. Ball one. And a big swing and a miss. Got him swinging. Oh, that high forcing fast ball has become such a great pitch for pitchers to finish hitters off. They’re trying to stay back with two strikes, make sure that they can handle something off speed and just with good spin rate, good rotation through the zone, elevate it a little bit, get a lot of swings and misses. And that’s a really nice job right there. That’s off the mark and a count even one and one and it’s fouled away. Curve in the dirt. Well, he might have to look for a different putaway pitch right here. 22 too. He’s already seen the curve ball a couple of times in this at bat, so might have it timed up and ready for it. And that’s a little bit high. Ball three. Boo. I’m not sure how he took that right there. I mean, that was an incredible two- strike pitch. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Now batting. Two down, base is empty. Next it’ll be the Texas DH. Cody Freeman. He is struck out and he is walked. And the first pitch misses for ball one. on the ground right side and that chance handled. The throw to first and that is that. Rangers pick up a run here on the solo home run. It’s now an 8 nothing game. Major League Baseball is on the show. This one isn’t exactly close. Chris, let’s go off script for a moment. I’m game. Were we on script? Never. Singy, where do you stand on the wave? Well, the wave of star players in MLB or the wave around this ballpark. The wave around the ballpark. I think it’s a little outdated. I’m more of a Thunder Sticks guy. And that’s not outdated. That one hammered center field back there and out of here. His 18th home run of the season. It’s 8-1. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. [Applause] That’s exactly the pitch he was looking for. Crushes it and hits it out of the ballpark. [Applause] Here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Jack Lighter gives way. Only two hits allowed for him. So, a great effort and we’ll be back after a quick break to tell you about the new arm. A new arm into the game, the righty Phil M. And he has some nasty breaking stuff. Number 88, Bill M. Daryl Hern for the A’s. Struck out looking in his first at bat. that misses the zone. One and0. Do you remember when Tim Kirkin ran in the sausage race in Milwaukee? No, I didn’t see that one. Yeah. Yeah, they use one of the kidsiz ones. You know, this isn’t exactly a mascot race, but I love what they do in Atlanta with the freeze. Swing and a miss and the count even at one. I wanted to race the freeze at one point. I don’t think my hamstrings could hold up for it now. I feel like 5 years ago you could have handled the freeze. It would have been fun. and I would bait you into it and try and get you to train to race the freeze and it just never materialized. Yeah, I would I appreciate that that you had enough confidence in me that I could beat a guy who looks like he was going to the Olympic trials at some point or another. But yeah, it’s always a great thing to watch there at Truist Park. Would you have worn one of those bobsled outfits like the freeze wears? No, that would have been too a little too revealing for me at this age. I feel you. Gellof batting for the second time. And that’s strike one. [Applause] Hammered down the right side but foul. One down. Base is empty. And that is downstairs. And it’s one and two. Bullpen action for the Rangers. Jacob Webb getting ready to go. Colom a left-hander also throwing. can’t connect on the curve ball. Struck him out. I mean, there aren’t many curve balls in the sport today that break like that thing does. Huge movement. It’s so difficult to get on the same plane and even think about squaring it up, let alone get a piece and hope he throws something else to keep the atbat alive. Kurts in the box again takes a strike. Swing and a miss. Ugly swing right there. Hard hit left side. They got Shioa to first. Inning over. But a solo home run will at least get this closer to respectability. Still a lopsided affair at 81 now. Back after this on the show. And welcome back to the ballpark. And now the catcher comes up to him. Jonah. There’s the swing and a miss. The A’s bullpen has some movement. Number 58 appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. Sterner also throwing and that is out of play. And that’s way high and count one and two. That one missing inside to the right side. A sliding stop. Nicely done for the Owl. Dylan Moore stepping in for the Rangers. That’s in there. Strike one. liner and this could be trouble. Now he’ll turn it for second. Pulls in with a double. Third hit for him today. Oh, that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there. When you connect and it jumps off your bat like that, you’re thinking double at the very least. put a great swing on it and man, he wasn’t fooled at all. One down and now it’s the Rangers leadoff hitter, Michael Helman. He’s already homerred in this game. Fast ball in for a strike. 0 and one. on one man at second. Strike two. Gosh, a little late on that breaking ball. I don’t think he recognized it out of the hand. Just a little tardy. Going to have to regroup here. And down on strikes. That K is his third of the game. Now batting Ezekiel Durant the next to hit. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively but runs pretty well. So when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. What about him playing another position on defense, one that would require a little more range? Absolutely. And I think if push came to shove where they had to make a a move during Got him. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. So one hit is all they get. Two, three, four, two up in the home half of the six. It’s the Rangers eight and the A’s won. Well, we go bottom six. And now here’s the A’s catcher Sha Langalers. Langelers. Mahon back to work. Swinging a foul. Pushed off to the right and that will get out of play. Ball one there. [Applause] Next pitch is downstairs. [Applause] There’s the strike. That big curve inside a pitch that can buckle you a little bit. Looks like a fast ball out of the hand and then just drops over that inside part of the plate. Knocks that one away and will do it again. Swag and a miss. struck him out and he’s registered three Ks in this one. Brent Rooker up next for the A’s who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Rooker and first offering is fouled off. That’s down and in. That’s a ball. Tried the sweeper. Back-to-back breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you, that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So, I think the confidence level is raised right here. And that is in for a strike and the count’s full. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. Foul ball and it remains a full count outside and that is ball four. It wasn’t easy, but he earned that walk after a long at bat. Man, that’s a tough one to take on the full count, but I guess he saw it really well. It’s a really nice plate appearance. Foul ball there. Next offering is fouled back. This ball’s chopped on the ground. And that one ripped into right. That’s a fair ball and it’s getting into the corner. Coming home out at the play. Well, this just can’t happen right there. You can’t try to score from first base with less than two outs unless you can pretty much walk across the ditch. And to get thrown out like that really throws water on the fire of a rally in this inning. Now it’s the shortstop Jacob Wilson. His home and away splits there. That one outside and it’s one and0. Ground ball and this should do it. Throw to first in time and this one is over. The Rangers take this one in a blowout. Clearly the bats came to play today and the pitching and defense as well. We saw some outstanding plays. Great performances all the way around. Just one run allowed. They never gave the other side a chance. And this one finishes with a final of 8 to one. For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show, I’m John Shami. Thanks for joining us.
