Thoughts On Matt Hasselbeck’s Assessment Of Justin FIelds & The 2025 New York Jets
[Music] All right, guys. What’s going on? Welcome in. So, first things first, hope you’re having a great Labor Day weekend. I know down here in Florida, it is pouring. So, uh if you guys hear like a ticking sound, it’s just the rain uh hitting this window here. But in any case, uh Matt Hasselbach sat down with uh New York Post Sports and talked Johnson Fields, talked about the 2025 New York Jets, and I really liked it. I I felt like a lot of the answers were just objective and realistic. No sort of overreactions or anything like that. And obviously with him being a former NFL quarterback, longtime NFL quarterback, it’s always interesting to hear these guys takes on some of these like young unproven quarterbacks that were, you know, labeled as, hey, high potential guys, first round picks, great college guys. We’ve seen flashes in the pro level, but never really that consistency. And Justin Fields obviously checks that box. So, so the first thing I really want to dive into here is when Matt was talking about where Justin needs to improve. Uh, and by the way, I’ll leave the interview listed down below in the description box to check out. I definitely recommend watching it, but he said that the main area that he feels like Justin should focus on is decision-m, right? Fields has had questionable decision-m before in the past. Matt uh referenced times where he was like a bit of a gunslinger, too much uh almost like reckless or careless with the football, trying to make plays down the field, and then over time he’s turned into more so like, okay, if my guy is not there, I’m either going to run or throw it away. And this is something that a lot of people within this space have talked about, right, former quarterbacks here. It seems like when Justin knows where he’s going with the football, when that player’s open, when the defense, you know, gives him a look that he likes for a specific route and he just cuts it loose, he delivers accurate passes with zip. Like, he can really, you know, put a lot on the football and get the ball where it needs to be, but really the main question has been consistency with processing defenses. in regards to some of the reported struggles that Justin Fields was having in training camp just trying to, you know, get a hold of the offense and really go out there and perform. Again, lay out that consistency. Hasselback made a really good point about gamers, you know, guys that when the lights come on, pads are on, fullon 11 on 111 real football, some guys just perform a little bit better, some guys elevate. And he actually brought up Andrew Luck as being a gamer, not really comparing luck to Fields, but comparing luck to the situation, which is when Sunday arrives, Andrew Luck arrives as well. His play just elevates. And Hasselbach was saying basically if uh Fields can be clear with his decision-m and aggressive with his legs, you know, he’s shown in the past that he is a gamer. He can just, you know, run all over a defense. He’s so hard to break bring down an open space. It’s honestly crazy to watch. And I felt like that was a really good point because we know that Tanner Ring Strand, Aaron Glenn, they were not scheming for opponents in preseason. We know we haven’t really seen a whole lot limited limited opportunities here for Fields and really the first team offense as a whole. Um, you know, it’s preseason. You don’t really want to be dishing out creative plays. You don’t want to be dishing out quarterback design runs or anything. Um, so it it kind of feels cool. you. Yes, of course, the Jets are underdogs this uh this week against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Sounds nuts saying that, but you also kind of have the sense of, okay, brand new coaching staff, brand new system, brand new quarterback here. Yes, Pittsburgh knows Justin Fields skill set, but we’re coming in with tricks up our sleeve and Pittsburgh just simply cannot prepare. Yeah, you can go back and look at Detroit’s defense. Yeah, you can look at Steve Wol’s play calling tendencies, right? blitz percentage, what he likes to call on third downs and stuff, but this is a brand new team. This is a brand new team here. So, I like being in this unpredictable position. Can the Jets pull off an upset on Sunday versus Pittsburgh? Now, there was a really good question that came up about adding another wide receiver, right? Potentially targeting a veteran before the season starts, understanding Garrett’s going to do what he does. But, you know, if you want to put Justin Fields in a position to have success, if you really if you want to put the offense in a position to have success, you can’t be onedimensional and you can’t just have one pass catcher that, you know, is capable of hurting defenses on a consistent basis, right? You kind of feel like any wide receiver on any given Sunday can go out and make plays and have a great day overall stat-wise, impact-wise, but on a consistent level. Is Alan Lazard or Josh Reynolds in a position where they can snag five, six catches weekly on anyone? I just don’t know. So, a really important question to ask and Matt Hasselbach said he doesn’t think so. And he compared the Jets to the Seattle Seahawks with Mike McDonald. Now, obviously McDonald’s going into year two, but he’s kind of hitting the reload button over in Seattle, right? We’re going to move on from DK Medaf. We’re going to move on from Gino Smith. We’re going to move on from Tyler Lockett. We’re going to bring in a brand new offensive coordinator here uh here in Clint Kubak. We’re going to run the ball on offense and we’re going to shoot to be a top 10 defense. That’s going to be our identity. It’s not going to be a million, you know, split in a mill a million different ways. It’s going to be play good defense, run the ball. And he and Hasselback talked about how Aaron Glenn kind of feels like it’s the same thing. Yes, of course Garrett is going to do his thing. Just, you know, such a dynamic weapon, but play good defense with a defensive minded head coach and we’re going to stick to the ground game. We’re going to eat the clock. We’re going to try to get in third and shorts. We’re going to try to shorten games here. And to be honest, like we’re getting close. We we are literally a week away from, you know, the time of this recording here um to the start of the season. Are the Colts really going to move on from Alec Pierce a week before the season starts? Jacobe Myers, is he like are the Raiders in a position like they’ve had him all camp? Are they in a position to to just flip him right before I mean I guess the I mean I guess anything’s possible, right? Micah Parsons just got traded to uh the inconference Green Bay Packers here. So yeah, I guess I can’t really rule anything out, but it just feels like at this point in time like you you’re like coaches Pete Carol for the Raiders, uh Syiken for the Colts. They’re preparing for the opponent on Sunday, right? Raiders split the Patriots. I’m not sure who the Colts play. I think the Dolphins actually. In any case, they’re they know what the roster looks like. I I just feel like it’s maybe it’s a little too far gone. Now, Rich Sini did mention Jacobe Myers as a potential trade to watch for the Jets. Um, Connor Hughes suggested a second round pick would be the asking price or, you know, the compensation for Jacobe Meyers. Absolutely not. Absolute. There’s no way I’m trading a first round pick. And there’s no way I’m trading a second round pick in this upcoming draft. No. This draft class is stacked. I love this upcoming draft class. and we already don’t have a third round pick because the whole, you know, Hassan Readic, Joe Douglas trade. So, the most I would give up and you’d have to, you know, really convince me is a fourth round pick. I don’t love the idea of trading a fourth round pick. I don’t. But you can, you know, if you get a solid upgrade at one of these positions, you can sell me on the idea, but it’s it’s a tough sell. The point is I just first of all I’m not trading a second round pick for any wide receiver out there any any potential guy on the move realistically speaking but also at this stage are the Jets just set at wide receiver I guess only time will tell now Hasselbach also touched on the idea of culture right culture within the team the locker room and said that uh in times in his specific locker rooms there would be a coach would that would come in and say you know I want to change the culture and Hasselback back would would basically uh say or think that’s not really the issue here. The issue is maybe blocking the defensive tackle uh or or catching the football, but culture really comes into play with teams that fall apart when adversity strikes. And he talked about how last season there was a lot of fingerpointing with the Jets and just a lot of uncertainty. Just it just wasn’t really a good place to be. It wasn’t a healthy environment for like that is not a winning culture. what took place last season. Rogers throwing guys under the bus after games. Uh coaches never taking accountability. General manager never taking accountability. Always kind of this strange arrogance like we know what we’re doing. We’re smarter than you. We’re smarter than the 31 other teams out there. Um it just felt weird. It just felt odd. It felt time for a change, right? Every everyone knows that. And ironically enough, he brought up Detroit as the the team comparison here, right? in regards to Dan Campbell stepping in to a situation that wasn’t really ideal. You know, the roster wasn’t fit. They didn’t really have enough talent taking over uh the team led by Bob Quinn, Matt Patricia. They couldn’t really run the systems that they wanted to run early on. Like it was not a perfect situation. It it it took time. So Hasselback’s point was for the Jets, can we just see improvement? Right? It’s probably not going to, you know, we’re not going to be blowing teams out 40 nothing early in the season, but as time progresses, can we see the team function? Does it look organized? Does it look well coached? Does it look like we’re heading in the right direction? Or is it uh more fingerpointing? Is it uh disorganized confusion? A a strange strange operation like we I mean, we’re Jets fans here. We’ve seen a lot of poorly coached teams throughout the years. We we can identify what a poorly coached team looks like, right? Players not lining up correctly, lots of penalties, poor clock management, uh poor angles being taken to the football, poor tackling is another one. Um not being able to get plays in and out of the huddle, not being able to get plays into the huddle, poor poor game plans. That’s another thing that has just played the Jets throughout the years. Not understanding your opponent. Again, I’ll leave the interview listed down below in the description box. Thanks so much for watching. Enjoy your Sunday. I think there’s a lot of college football on today. Lenor Sellers, South Carolina. That should be really interesting. Uh TCU North Carolina uh later on tonight. And then Miami Notre Dame, right? Carson Beck, Crystal Ball. Both teams have so much talent. Carr starting for Notre Dame. That that should be that should be a really really good game right down in South Florida. Could Miami pull off the upset here? I I think a lot of people are looking at Miami and saying like, “Okay, well, they lost Cam Ward. lost, you know, a handful of talent. Restrepo, Elijah Royo, Jet Snack, two of them, right? Tyler Baron, Francisco Maaga. But overall, man, Miami has a veteran. Like, this defense is it is very good. Very good on paper. So, anyway, thanks so much for watching. Let me know your thoughts and as always, go Jets. [Music]

Thoughts On Matt Hasselbeck’s Assessment Of Justin FIelds & The 2025 New York Jets
Cimini: “2. A name to watch: One receiver who might be available is Jakobi Meyers, who reportedly wants the Las Vegas Raiders to trade him. Jets passing game coordinator Scott Turner, a Raiders assistant the previous two seasons, spoke glowingly of Meyers last December: “I tell people all the time, he’s one of my favorite players that I’ve ever coached.”
Meyers, 28, is coming off his best season — 87 catches, 1,027 yards. He’s in the final year of his contract ($10.5 million base) and wants a raise.”

Are Za’Darius Smith and Jadeveon Clowney going to sign somewhere this week? I find it hard to believe that they will sit out this year.
It's not as exciting, but it's a relief that the Jets are being overlooked this year. It sucks going into the season on a high and fall on your face 2 years in a row. The team is improved from last year just from the coaching staff alone. That will make a difference on the field. The Jets will establish a rushing identity this season and Fields will run that type of offense much better than AR, who never saw a defensive formation he didn't think he could throw on. The defense is top 10 with Sauce at cb, quinnen at tackle, mcdonald and JJ on the outside, quincy and sherwood at lb and Steve Wilks running it. I think they could win 8-10 games this year. Best case scenario they are a bubble playoff team.
The plan is the plan , man. 😎
Good video! Nussmeier and Allar looked very good, legit. Great games this wknd. Rooting for Fields. Hopefully it clicks for him. Ian you should do a general top 12 college players this week; every week through the season. Not Jets related. Just overall. Why? Because you know the college game and there is a hunger for that content weekly video. Blessings
Fields stinks and I will continue to say he stinks until he gives 3 full seasons of quality Quarterback play.
I seriously question if all of the people bashing Fields passing ability have actually done any research. He's improved every year as a passer to the point he completed 65 percent of his passes last season(albeit in 6 games). Aaron Rodgers completed 63 percent
the fields hate is crazy. going into his 5th year, this is his 4th head coach and 4th offensive coordinator, and technically speaking, in year 2 to year 3, getsy completely reworked the offense in the off season to try to make him a pocket passer. so in his 5th year in the league, he is on his 5th offensive system, to go along with his 4th head coach and 4th OC. not even tom brady with the athleticism of mike vick could thrive under those circumstances, considering 3 of the 4 years were with an inept franchise, and 70% of his total games played, he didnt even have a competitve roster.
years 1 and 2, the bears were in full rebuild. year 3, they were still rebuilding, and by week 6 they finally traded for a pass rusher, and had some semblance of an actual team. no one is succeeding in that scenario. its crazy how everyone acts like its his fault. meanwhile, caleb with a team stacked beyond fields wildest dreams couldnt even match the 7 wins the bears had the year before, and that includes eberloser and his defense blowing 3 separate late double digit 4th quarter leads. fields last season in chicago should have been a 10 win season, but eberloser had no business being a head coach
that intro especially with air pods in is f'ing gas
lets go jc! another season upon us
been ridin with ya since '18
I'm sorry but you're going to have to mix in a good like 50/50 game with the run and pass. I have to see if the team is disciplined enough to be able not to have penalties. It's nice in theory but if you're not disciplined it doesn't work.
Moug doesn't want to commit cap to a mediocre wr2. Its a premium position and gw just got paid. Moug has a plan.
Unlike most ppl that’s worried about our offense I’ve been a Fields fan since Ohio days.. And I see that you can win with him on a NFL level. I’m still worried about Sauce on defense. I’m still not
completely sold on our Corners and definitely not our Safeties . Michael Carter the second is cool but people are forgetting we had Brandin Elchols making most of our plays on defense last year and now he’s with guess who “the Steelers” smh .. Bryce huff and Elchols were some of the best contributors we’ve had on defense in a long time and this team just always let our best defenders walk. So until this team can prove that they could get to the QB consistently and pick off passes consistently I’m still worried about our defense more than our offense
I think Jets fans still dont realize how much of Fields running ability makes him a threat. Who cares if he has 1 passing TD in a game if he has 2 rushing ones as well. This fanbase isnt ready to analyze that type of mobile QB yet after bad QB play and statue man Rodgers
T- minus 7 days !!!! Hopefully this time next week we will be happy and smiling; that being said I think Justin Fields is going to have a career year and being in the NY spotlight is very similar to Chicago and he is mature enough to learn from the past as well. Andrew Luck was a very good quarterback as well.
So, as a fields fan for his entire nfl career i feel pretty confident in him this year. This first week may get ugly because the steelers defense is anazing early in the year and then trails off. Thats it. Offenses tens to start slow. Justin will be ok. He will hit g5, the backs, and the TEs. Thats his throwing profile. He is fairly accurate with wideouts who dont get separation and he has decent anticipation. This game is a coin toss. The hope is for him to throw for 225 yds. He averages 200. If he can stay healthy and give you 225 yds and a td + a game plus 50 yds rushing he will be a top half of the league qb. Those are facts, do the math.
Hasselbeck talking about his mentality and playing with a defensive minded hc is real.
When has Justin had any consistency?
The Justin Fields defenders are so weird to me. Zach Wilson and Trey Lance who were in his same draft class get constantly mocked and made fun of for being bad, but Fields doesn’t get that same mockery despite him being just as bad.
Fields sucks, always has and always will.
He needs to study defenses big time
Great show
Fields will be exposed this year and it starts week 1
Look Jalen hurts and the eagles won everything last year and he didn’t even pass for 3k, now obviously they had Barkley but if we can replicate some what of what they did we will be competitive
I never thought Geno Smith and Sam Darnold would improve. If they improved, it is possible Justin Fields can improve.
These comments are coping hard. The delusion is off the charts with this fanbase.
If you do fantasy football I’d love a video of you breaking down your team and why you picked everyone
Future HC Hasselback
The delusion is real. 😂
Let's hope the #7 he is wearing the is more like ken o'brian instead of the old bust boomer the I blame the coaching QB.
I would take Justin Fields over the last two Jets quarterbacks at this point. I am not saying Fields is a great qb. Zach Wilson is a bad qb. Aaron Rodgers is a hall of famer but the problem with him is with his age and injury history he is one hit away from retiring.
Fields must be the nicest guy in the world! Because for this man to have the same mistakes for 7 straight seasons(3 at OSU and 4 at the NFL level) and people are still saying he has upside, is crazy to me
I'll tell you this Allen Lazard better be 1 blocking fool out there on game day 😳 ! Because after watching him drop passes
For 2 seasons 😱 ! And the Jets sent to the practice squad Jamaal Pritchett & Quentin Skinner 🏈 ! Crazy 💔 !
Quicker decisions, not the decisions themselves.
Who are going to be the good qb’s coming out in next years class?
