It’s a Monday in the offseason and we do mailbag Mondays. You can submit your questions at johncorales.com. johncorales.combag. That’s the only way I’m getting questions. So, please do that. And I answer them during this downtime every Monday because there’s no game or anything in to get in the way. But during the course of the season, I will do mailbags. they just won’t always be on a Monday. So, let’s just dive in. Later on, we’ll get into fun questions like superstitions. Uh, a little history lesson with Sam Jones. Uh, we’ll get into the bench lineup in the second segment. Uh, the ideal style of play. We’re going to start off with Marty who asks, “I saw the Globe story about the Celtics maybe looking for a place to build a new arena. Is that really a possibility?” I’ve talked about it a lot. The Globe has a story out uh I don’t know what came out uh Sunday, Saturday about the Celtics uh basically, you know, speculating could they find a new arena? Could they be looking for a new arena? So, let’s start with this. The Boston Globe and the Boston Celtics are like this. They are just super tight. So I don’t think the Globe would just throw out the speculation without some kind of like, hey, you know, there this this could happen. Could it happen? Yes, it could happen. And I I I encourage the team. I’ve talked about this a million times on this podcast. The team needs a another revenue source if they’re going to compete with the biggest of the the franchises in the NBA. And I’m talking about Golden State Warriors, LA Clippers, New York Knicks, uh LA Lakers to a degree, but the Lakers don’t own their building. But it kind of doesn’t matter with the Lakers. They’re a little bit of a different animal. But these other teams that can print their own money, they can kind of extend their windows a little bit. I know it’s the second apron era and this is supposed to be like a lot of this money is is taken out of it in a way, but you want to be able to uh not have a financial kind of uh detriment to building your team. There there are basketball penalties and those are real. We heard uh Brad Stevens talk about how real they are and that’s that’s going to depress how much money is spent. But there’s no doubt that the teams that can print their own money because they own the venue and they not only have Celtics games, but they could have a, you know, a WNBA team play there. they have all you know concerts come through and you know other things you know other sports big three you know WWE boxing all these things that draw big crowds so that’s that is something that the Celtics should absolutely look into but as I’ve said couple of major roadblocks number one it is almost impossible politically to get something like this done Number two, it is so expensive to get this done that I I question this new ownership group’s political chops to come into Boston and be like, “Yeah, man. We want to build this uh new arena. We’re looking at all these different spots. No problem.” Right? And all the politicians are like, “Oh, no problem. There’s a problem with that.” Because as I’ve said before, the if the Crafts couldn’t build their soccer stadium in Boston uh with without a major protracted fight, I don’t understand how uh the Celtics will get their thing done without some sort of major protracted fight. There are regulatory things that you have to clear. There’s all sorts of things that you have to clear. red tape to get something like this done in Boston is incredible. And there are people who know what they’re doing in the ownership group, but it doesn’t mean that this this group has the political kind of cache to get this done. And the money, the money is so incredibly high. Like I can’t imagine this being done for less than a billion dollars. You’re paying $7 billion for the team. And as I’ve said before, I don’t know. I don’t even know who is completely involved in all. There’s a set of owners that are going to make up the board, but there are other people and there’s a lot of people involved to get this sale just to get this thing done. It’s taken forever to close this deal. You’re going to tell me that these guys suddenly have an extra billion dollars hanging around to go. First of all, all the money that it’s going to take to get through the regulatory stuff, palms that need to be greased, the uh all of the permitting, you know, hundreds of thousands of dollars to just get the regula, just to get the thing, the paper done and then to go clear because whatever they get, they’re going to have to clear like clear the land and then build. It is. So I I I have a hard time believing that this gets done in short order. Maybe it does. Maybe it does. And I I hope it does because look, I’m not married to this building. You know, I I grew up with the Celtics and the old garden is gone. You know, that that’s gone. And yeah, the the spot but the spot where they play that used to be the p the parking lot. So it’s it’s just there’s no like oh they have to play here that’s it doesn’t matter to me anymore. If you give fans an awesome building they will appreciate the awesome building. But the question is where and so the the first thing I want to say is Suffach Downs is mentioned. I think it’s meion mentioned just because you’ve got to mention Suffach Downs in all of these discussions. If they build the arena at SuffK Downs, uh, than just we should riot in the streets. Uh, protest like I know there are much bigger things in the world to protest, but I’m just kind of making a joke. This would be the worst possible decision. Do not make this thing happen at Suffach Downs. Even if that’s the easiest place to make it happen, do not put the arena at Suffach Downs. For the love of God, do not do that. Uh, other places that they mention though are interesting. I think the most the most likely, but also the most difficult would be in Everett. I think it’s just across the water. You can kind of see the the plot of land from the current garden. So that’s how close it is. But it’s a a former, you know, industrial kind of like uh electric. There’s all this there’s a lot of stuff that’s probably like toxic and uh very difficult to clean. They would have to get rid of all of that stuff that would be very difficult. But I also see the connection between the Encore Casino and they would probably be very on board because they the Encore is already a sponsor of the Celtics. If the Celtics and Encore got together and were able to put an arena there, like maybe that’s how you get that billion. and the Celtics say, “Hey, look, we’ll we’ll we’ll split everything with you, Encore, and now you’ve got Vegas money.” I think if they split the costs, it’s better than the deal that they have now where they’re just paying rent and the Celtics get all the money from everything Celtics and half the money from everything else. and Encore gets to be like, “Hey, now we get a place for Bruno Mars to come in and Encore Casino and like you can have your concerts here.” The one thing I have to stress is do not think that the Jacobs family is just going to sit there and be like, “Oh man, that sucks that they’re going to build another building there.” That the Jacobs family stands to lose a lot. All of a sudden, there’s competition in Boston for all of these concerts. You know, if Dual Lia is Dual Lia’s coming to town, like she’s got a concert here like next week, now there’s competition. You know, now there’s like, hey, how about you play this much better, bigger, more modern arena, right? This other building’s 30 years old. Play this new one and we’ll give you this extra deal and all of this stuff. And now all of a sudden, TD Garden’s empty that night and Dual Lia, a big megastar, is playing at this new arena. You think that Jacob’s family is just going to sit there and be like, “Ah man, that sucks. We really could have used that money.” No, they’re going to put a ton of money and they’re going to lobby and they’re going to use that influence to fight against this, whether it’s in Everett or as the article uh uh speculates, the Whit Circle, which would be it’s I like the idea there. It’s a little bit south of the city, but it’s still Boston. It’s on your way into town, so it would still qualify. It’s like a rail yard. You can kind of build above it and kind of make it Madison Square Gardenish or like like that. That would be um I I or even like I mean I say that like North Station is right under TD. You you can do that. You can keep doing So that’s I think there’s an Alustin location there where uh right off of the Pike which would be interesting. I think the Everett location makes the most sense. It’s just so tough. It’s so tough to get all that paperwork done to clear all of that industrial stuff, then build a building, get the on top of it, like the roads into that area suck. You got to get find a way to get mass transit there. You got to find a way to improve the roads around there. It would be a traffic nightmare getting into that place. So, there’s there’s a lot of work to be done. My my bit to caution Celtics owners if they hear this, do not pick a spot that you say, “Oh, this is just going to be the most convenient spot because of the roads and all this.” And have it be out of the way. Do not do Palace of Auburn Hills in Detroit. Do not do that to the the fans of Boston. Have it a place where you can get there via train and make it make it somewhat easy or just stay where you are. That’s it. So, it’s not going to happen tomorrow. It’s not going to happen like Jason Tatum will retire. Deuce Tatum might retire before this thing is done. So, I don’t know. Uh, I’m very very skeptical of getting a new arena in Boston done. All right, we’re going to come back to talk about style of play, bench lineups, Joe Mazula’s coaching. That’s all when we return when we return on the Lockdown Celtics podcast. Today’s show is brought to you by Monarch Money. Let’s get back to the uh mailbag Monday again. johncaresis.com to johncarles.combag to get your questions in. Daniel says, “Based on the roster as currently constituted, what style of play do you think maximizes our chances of success? Also, Chris Buché has won a championship in his first year of every NBA team he’s played on.” the words of Lloyd from Dumb and Dumber. So, you’re saying there’s a chance? Uh, yeah. This is this is kind of like the the light version of the Drew Holidayiday. Once you trade for Drew Holiday, win a championship. Uh, I don’t think Portland is going to win a championship, and I don’t think the Celtics are either. So, the Chris Boucher uh luck is is going to run out, I’m sure. Style of play. I think we’ve been pretty clear on this podcast about style of play. It has to be more uptempo. Uh the Celtics have to make sure that like they’re playing a a faster pace, which doesn’t necessarily mean a fast break style, but they have to get into their sets earlier. They have to give themselves more options. I think one thing about playing so slow the past few couple of years anyway, you have Tatum and Brown and you had Porzingis and Holiday and Horford and like all of these guys that you at any point one of them could create a shot for themselves and you’d be like, “Okay, that’s a decent look generally speaking.” Now, you got to be careful because the play the few players that you have remaining, they’re they’re good, but they’re going to demand a lot of attention. So, you have to give yourselves options. The the dribble dribble dribble and take a shot with 4 seconds left on the clock. You can’t get away with that as much this year. So you have to push the ball, get, you know, the first action has to start somewhere at like 16, 17 seconds on the shot clock because if that works, great. Then fine. You, you know, you take a shot early in the shot clock or middle of the shot clock, it goes in, you come back, you play defense. If, if it doesn’t work, you need to have time to get to that second action, third action, right? get the ball, reset it, and then at the very least you you’ve given it a few shots before you dump it to Jaylen or Derek White and say, “Please save us.” So, it’s it’s not about getting fast breaks and layups, which would be nice. They should do that as well, but it’s more about pace of play. And fast-paced teams don’t necessarily get a lot of transition buckets. Fast pace fast-paced teams can be half court teams. they just start that that offense sooner. So that I think is going to be lots of picks, lots of passing, lots of cutting, and that I think is going to be what maximizes whatever the Celtics are going to be. That’s going to be what maximizes them. Josiah asks, “What do you think the projected bench lineup will be for next year? Do you foresee Ugo Gonzalez getting minutes?” I do not because he’s so young and raw. I I think this is an opportunity to kind of bring him along uh without kind of like pissing off the established guys by saying, “Oh, no. Here’s a 19-year-old. You got to play it play him a ton so we can figure it out.” I think you can you can get Gonzalez run in Portland and you know, as I’ve said before in the podcast, you throw a bunch of stuff at him and then you say, “Okay, do all of this stuff.” And you go to Portland and you do a bunch of that stuff. Then you bring him to Boston for a couple of games and say, “Okay, let’s see how that translates.” And you know, different speed, different talent level, you know, all of that stuff. different decision- making, different officiating, all of that stuff. You know, you you get it in practice, you go to the G- League and it works a certain a certain way, then you come to the NBA and like, “Okay, let’s see if you can replicate that under these circumstances.” And then you you fail. Invariably, he will fail. And then you say, “Great, you failed at this. This is what you need to work on.” If he’s good at certain things, he’s great. You know, you I mean, it’d be nice if he just walks in and is great right away, but I doubt it. He’s he has to figure things out. So, uh I think the bench rotation will simply be, you know, Payton Pritchard, Sam Hower, uh you you’ll see some level and then I don’t know, Anthony Simons off the bench or uh Pritchard off the bench. I don’t know, maybe Pritchard is a starter. That’s entirely possible. So then it would be Sim Simon Samh Hower um whoever doesn’t start between Buché Luca Garza uh or Nimish Kada you know so Ber will play Garza will play Kada will play and it’s just a matter of who earns the starting spot and but you’ll you’ll have a couple of bigs off the bench for sure um and then Baylor Shyman is going to get his run. So that that right there is you’re you’re looking at nine 10 guys. Uh they’re going to see what Josh May not has. Um they’re going to, you know, run out of minutes at some point. And I’ll do a whole minutes breakdown once once the preeason hits and we get a little sense of like I I don’t want to I don’t want to go too crazy, but uh we’ll do a minutes breakdown as we get closer. But it’s going to be the Simons, Pritchard, one of one of those guys. Hower, uh, Shyman’s going to get plenty of opportunity. One or, you know, one of those bigs, at least two of those bigs. So, we’re at four. And then you throw May not in there. You throw, um, the potential for uh, you Jordan Walsh in there. Um, I we forget about Xavier Tilman. Xavier Tilman, he he is, no pun intended, an X- factor here because he’s been so hurt that we’ve kind of forgotten about him. If he’s healthy, if his knee’s okay, there could be something there. So, um I don’t want to forget about Xavier Tilman, but the bench rotation is going to be like that’s something that we’re going to have to figure out. Which brings us to uh a question about this upcoming season and Joe Missoula’s coaching, which we’ll get to when I come back. Today’s show is brought to you by FanDuel. All right, let’s let’s run through some of these questions here to wrap up the show because I got a few more left and I’m already at 24 minutes. So, Edison says, “I’m actually excited for this upcoming season.” By the way, happy birthday, Edison Gonzalez in Paraguay. So, uh, very excited because he says, “I don’t care about winning. I just care about finding good players for that next run.” This is a perfect way to look at it. I think Edison is right on the money. Don’t worry about the wins and losses. The last thing I want for the Celtics is to sacrifice development and that um you know figuring out okay is Buché going to be here is Garza going to be here what does Kada have is he developing like those things Josh M all those guys Jordan Walsh I don’t want to lose developmental time to have the team prove a And I think the team is going to be trying to prove a point. We’ll get to Joe Missoula in the next question, but like Joe wants to win. He doesn’t he’s not going to sit there and be like, “Well, we have a chance to win this game.” Um, so I’m not going to play this guy the last five minutes because that’s not going to help us. But we need to see if whoever that guy is can handle that pressure situation. That’s important. This is not the season to be like, hey, we got to get to 46 wins instead of 42 wins or 38 wins or whatever it is. We need to see can these guys perform in certain situations and that’s going to call for some interesting uh choices and I want to see this like this season is what it is. Just roll with it, figure it out. I want in a very scientific way. If something fails, if a player fails, then great. I I’m not rooting for anybody to fail, but I’m looking at it as like, okay, this is not a good fit. We don’t have to worry about this anymore. That player can try to find a fit somewhere else. That’s that’s how the NBA works. So, that’s why I think Edison is is on the money. Don’t worry about the wins. Be excited about the games. be excited about figuring out what what’s next because that’s what’s going to extend the Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown window if that’s how how it goes. That’s going to be how the Celtics contend for championships moving forward. And we get to this question from Nick saying, “I feel for Joe. Coaching a complete team that’s lacking talent is doable. You can scheme, you can coach them up. But a team that is completely devoid of talent at power forward and center and doesn’t have a bench. There isn’t much to do there. The only path I see is a team that goes even further into shooting threes, small ball, and actually being a live and die by the three team. So, and makes a good point. Nick makes a good point saying it’ll only play into lazy narrative narratives. Um, which I I disagree that they’re going to have to lean into the threes. I think they’re they do have to they they have to live by the Missoula ball principle which is take the best shot available and just hoisting 45 three-pointers is not good. You know, we saw that against the Knicks game one. You don’t just run down and hoist. That’s even though you some of those are good looks, you have to be aware like what’s the situation call for? And in certain situations, they call for, hey, drive it, drive and pull up, drive and cut, dish, you know, give me something else, run something else. And so I think having listened to Joe Missoula for the past few years, I I feel like the three-pointers were an emphasis in the way that those were the best shots and the players taking them made them good shots. The Celtics don’t have those same players anymore, so those aren’t going to be the same kind of shots. And sometimes some of those guys just, okay, you’re going to be run off the line, fine, I’ll attack. And if there’s a nice open 15-footer, take it. Take it and make it and let’s move on. And then it’s going to soften up the defense and then you can, you know, start cutting behind it and all that other stuff. So, I think Joe can coach this team up. And I think that they they don’t have to lean completely on threes. It’s more about the cutting. It’s more about playing fast. So that’s where that’s where I think. But look, I feel for Joe, too. But you know what? This is this was always going to be part of the challenge. You you know, you come in, you get a ready-made winner, you win a championship. Um things don’t work out. You you you get one out of those three years, and now here you are. every every coach worth his salt has had to go through this kind of upcoming year. And this is look Joe’s gonna learn some things. Joe’s gonna coach his way through some things. He’s going to make some mistakes. So, this is I’m sure he sees this as a challenge that’s going to be worthwhile and it’ll make him a better coach ultimately. Uh Angelo says, “Big hypothetical question that could be fun. Which duo of Celix 28 do you think work better on a team?” Paul Pierce and Jason Tatum. Paul Pierce and Jaylen Brown. KG and Tatum or KG and Brown. Well, I’m going to say it’s KG and Tatum because Tatum is the closest thing to Paul Pierce. And KG and Pierce worked really nice. And I think KG defensively uh with Tatum and his length that would really work well. And I think KG’s intensity would be good for Tatum. I think I think KG and Jaylen Brown that intensity would be good, but it it could be volatile and it could be, you know, there’s there’s the potential for it to kind of like maybe not work as well as we think. I I like the KG and Tatum. I would love to have seen Prime KG and Jason Tatum play together. That would be amazing because they’re like the same size practically. Tatum’s only a little smaller and he’s got a hell of a reach. So, um I think that would be a great a great team on both ends. So, KJ and Tatum is the answer. Uh Kirk says, “I heard his name recently. Uh where does Sam Jones rate with the all-time greats at his position in your opinion? Number of championships not an issue. Russell only Russell has more. Uh Russell has spoke glowingly uh about him. Jerry West has Dre Arbach. Um so Sam Jones obviously there’s I don’t know where he ranks in the you know alltime shooting guards. There’s obviously a lot of alltime shooting guards that you you want to rank pretty highly. Sam is one of the most underrated NBA players in in history. Sam Jones uh was a stone killer. He um I forget the exact quote from Bill Russell, but when you say when Bill Russell has spoken glowingly um I forget it was like seven times I think it was seven times we asked Sam Jones to take a shot that if he missed would have ended our season and he hit all seven like I think I think the number is seven. Uh, and that’s that is what Sam Jones was. That Sam Jones was the guy that you wanted the ball in his hands. He did not miss clutch baskets. He was amazing. And it’s kind of sad, you know, in a way. I will preach the gospel of Sam Jones anytime I get the opportunity to because in a in a franchise where it’s Russell and Bird and the big three with Michael Parish and a new big three with KG Pierce Ray and now Tatum and Brown and you and obviously Havichek and Heinson and Koozie and you like people it’s easy to forget because Sam kind of did his job and faded away a little it. You know, Koozie stuck around. Koozie did broadcast. Heinson obviously was a broadcasting legend, was a coach. Casey Jones came back and coached. So, you go, “Oh, he was the coach. Oh, yeah. He played. Oh, yeah. He was like Marcus Smart before Marcus Smart.” Like he like all of these things kind of come together and Sam Jones kind of just is like he was quiet. He did his job. He did his job as well as anybody. He was one of maybe the most clutch player in NBA history. And you could say there’s a lot of clutch players in NBA history. Sam Jones is right there with all of them. And you can people can outrank other ones higher and fine. I get it. Sam Jones is right there with all the clutch players in NBA history. The Celtics do not win those championships without Sam Jones. They don’t win them without Bill Russell, but offensively, Sam Jones got them either to the finals or won the finals with heroic shots over and over and over and over again. That’s who Sam Jones was. So, spread the word. Preach the gospel. And we’re going to end on a fun one at 34 and a half minutes. This is I I appreciate anybody who’s still here, the everydayers who are still with me at this point. We’re gonna have some fun. Doug says, “Hi, John. I know you don’t believe in jinxes, superstitions, karma, etc. But come on. You’ve never said someone has gotten what they deserve, good or bad. Even you must have at least one thing that you believe in that isn’t explainable. Ghosts, Bigfoot, aliens, the Matrix.” All right. First of all, first of all, do not put aliens in this. There there is life on other planets. Undoubtedly, because statistically that’s we live in a vast universe. We are part of one solar system in the Milky Way where there are billions of so billions with a B solar systems in the Milky Way and there are billions of galaxies like the Milky Way in the universe. And when you do the math and you get out to like, you know, seextillion, septillion, octillions of potential solar systems and planets. I just find it impossible to believe that there’s only one where life, intelligent life, theoretically intelligent life has evolved. There has to be statistically there has to be life out there somewhere, beings, something that exists. There’s a planet somewhere that’s the exact right distance from the sun that it orbits that has developed ideal conditions whether they’re more advanced than us or just getting started or whatever that has to happen. So, but that speaks to my why don’t I believe in jinxes and superstitions and karma. I want I believe in like evidence and reality and like I don’t believe in jinxes. I don’t believe that because I wore this shirt, Jason Tatum missed a shot, right? Or because I got up from my TV and went to the kitchen and somebody missed or somebody walked into the room and sat down, all of a sudden the Celtics started missing. I don’t believe that’s just some cosmic wave that go that does that does not make any sense. Um, superstitions superstitions work because they make people more comfortable, right? So somebody is nervous and they say, “Well, I have a superstition where I do blah blah blah.” Well, when you do blah blah blah, you’re like, “Okay, I’m calm. I’m ready.” That is less superstition as it is routine, right? So, I don’t believe that the action of like, “Oh, I crack my knuckles before I go out and I listen to this song and that’s my super. I have to do it or else I’m gonna suck.” That song isn’t what made the player good. It’s the fact that doing these things made the player relax and the the relaxation is what made the player good, right? That’s what a superstition is. Uh karma karma is not absolute. I believe I I do believe in people like if something bad happens to a bad person like oh that person deserved that. But I don’t think there’s some cosmic force that’s like, “Haha, I’m I’m getting you. I got you.” Even though I talk about the basketball gods. That’s my way of saying like good things that happen on the court tend to be rewarded because when you play well, when you make good decisions, good things are going to happen. That’s not that I believe in the gods are saying, “Well, you they executed that play well. Let me just that was going to be a miss, but I’m going to make that a make.” Right? Like I don’t believe in that. Like I karma isn’t absolute. Bad good things happen to bad people, right? And like what we conceive of as good is different. My idea of what’s good is not yours. And that like it may be for some of you, but some of you it’s not. We can I’m not going to get into politics, but I will say that in my social media when I share certain things, I get plenty of blowback. And these people are going to say, “Well, that’s not good. this is good. What I think this is what I think is good and their idea of good is different than mine. So how does that affect karma? Whose whose belief system are we going by? Because they’re going to say karma is one thing and I’m going to say karma is another. This is why I don’t believe in that stuff. I don’t believe in ghosts even though I got scared to to death by, you know, about ghosts when I was a kid. Um I don’t believe in that stuff. That’s why I don’t I just don’t I think the world is what it is and I’m going to leave it at that. But I certainly can get much much deeper into that. I don’t think superstitions or jinxes happen. I think that I’ve explained it all. That’s it. So that’s my belief system. I like I like evidence and reality. All right, we went long, but you can listen this if you if you didn’t listen. Well, it’s kind of foolish for me to tell you what to do if you didn’t listen by the 40minute mark because if you got here, you’ve already listened. But whatever, it doesn’t matter. Hopefully, you’ve listened to this point and I’m going to wrap up the show. So, thank you for listening. Thank you for being an everydayer. Everett (no offense if you’re from there) is right up there with Chelsea as one of the armpits of Boston. I’d much rather just see them renovate the current arena a bit if needed. It’s probably not going to happen anyway as TD Garden has a great relationship with Delaware North who own the Bruins and want to keep both teams at the Garden for now.
Thanks John. ☘️🔒
PS: 51 days til Opening Night folks!
Dying for the season to start. Binged Ballard, the Bosch spinoff on Prime. Nothing else good to watch til opening tip-off! 🍀
If the MAJOR problem is local politicians then there's definitely something very wrong there. Even because Celtics weren't born yesterday.
I don’t think a new arena should be build because #1 it was build in the 90s, #2 it’s not even falling apart & #3 they signed the lease too
Lakers don't own their arena ? Why do ppl always mention that when talking about CELTICS SALE SMH LOL
Where to place Sam in the Celtic Pantheon? #1 belongs to William Felton. I was the man, He's still the man. Best Player I ever saw play. #2, for me, is Hondo. He was joy in motion. #3 Larry, the Legend. #4 I think Sam fits here. Even considering all the other great Celtics, Sam fits at four. He was a really great player.
I have to believe there’s some species out there smarter than us. It’s not a really high bar.
Tomorrow Queta vs Porzingus, be there!
